The Magic of Ancient Ireland

Ireland is old… like, really, really, really old. As Americans, I think it’s hard for us to fathom the ancient structures that are found in Ireland. I will never forget being in class with our professor and one of the American students exclaiming with awe that one of the local pubs was founded in 1811. Our professor laughed and said, “I’m Irish. 1811 was practically yesterday!”

The professor had a point. In Ireland, the modern exists adjacent to the ancient. On an anthropological tour of the area that I lived, our guide pointed to an ancient neolithic tomb, two large stones supporting one that lay across the top, that was in someone’s front yard. Further down the road, the standing ruins of an eighth century tower was in someone’s horse pasture.

While in Ireland, I was lucky enough to see a few of these ancient structures. On a trip to Dublin, our group stopped at Newgrange Tomb. Newgrange dates back about 5,200 years, making it older than both Stonehenge and the Pyramids of Giza. The amazing part of visiting structures in Ireland is that they allow visitors to really experience them. We were allowed to go inside the ancient structure in small tour groups, following a long hallway to the heart of the mound, surrounded by what are thought to be three altars.

The downside of this casual treatment of the ancient is that there is graffiti on the inside of the ancient tomb, scrawled on one of the walls above the altar. My personal favorite was; “Thomas was here, 1847.” (There is, of course, no recent graffiti since the passage tomb is now a significant historical site. The early modern visitors seemed to have no qualms about making their mark.)

Before excavation, a stunning stone was blocking the entrance. That stone now sits in front of the tomb. Covered in carved spirals, the stone is another mystery for archeologists; what did those spirals mean? Are they decoration? Did they have some spiritual significance?

Whatever they mean, they make beautiful jewelry. Many Irish artisans have used this piece of ancient art to make their own incredible pieces. Jumping forward a couple thousand years, I also visited Clonmacnoise, an ancient monastery located in Co. Offaly. Founded in the 6th century, Clonmacnoise is one of the earliest signs of Ireland’s emerging Christianity. Today, it is one of the best preserved monastic sites out of dozens across Ireland. My American professor, an anthropologist who served as an impassioned guide for my whole Ireland experience, was excited about this “inbetween” of the ancient worlds. Away from the main church is a smaller women’s church. On one of the beams, so small you have to be looking to see it, is a stone carving of a pagan fertility symbol known as a sheelah na gig.

Located on the River Shannon in the middle of Ireland, Clonmacnoise quickly became a center of religion, learning, and craftsmanship in the ninth century. However, the settlement had numerous difficulties, including raidings by the English and the Vikings and was fading from prominence in the 12th and 13th centuries. Like many ancient places in Ireland, Clonmacnoise has layers; one of the churches was renovated in the 17th century, Victorians were known to have picnics on the sight, and people are still be buried in the nearby graveyard today.

During its height of activity, Clonmacnoise was a center for writing and craftsmanship. Most early monasteries have standing Celtic Crosses, intricately carved using primitive tools by dedicated monks. Clonmacnoise features three of these intricately carved crosses that feature biblical stories across their surface.

In the modern era, the Celtic Crosses that were originally found in monasteries like Clonmacnoise have become an important symbol of the Irish-Catholic faith. Galway: The City Of Music, Culture & Claddagh Rings

I have never loved a city as much as I loved Galway, Ireland, which is located on Ireland’s rocky western coast.

There is something so special about Galway, a combination of the Irish spirit, energy, and quaintness all shoved into one small city. In the inner city, no cars are allowed. It is only foot traffic that graces the brick paths between colorful shops, all sat next to each other. There are dozens of shops (many advertising the Irish goods that they sell) and plenty of pubs.

Galway is well known for being a hub of “trad music” or traditional music. Wander into any pub at night, and there will be a band on stage with a series of fiddles and guitars playing their hearts out. Every once in awhile you’ll be lucky enough to see a harpist on stage, their fingers moving deftly across the instrument. One of the most ancient of all Irish instruments, the harp is a soulful instrument that captures both the joy and the sorrow of the Irish people. One of my favorite aspects of life in Galway is that you don’t even have to go into a pub to hear the music. Wandering through the stone streets, you’ll find that there’s a musician on every corner; a man with a guitar, a couple kids with violins, an adult band singing into a microphone. There are other acts that spring up on the street, from magic acts to tightrope walkers to hip hop dancers and of course, Irish dancers.

Once, I saw a group of Irish dancers dancing away to Ed Sheeran’s 'Galway Girl', which was one of the theme songs of my time in Ireland. Performing on a piece of wood created specially for this reason, the dancers loud shoes hit every beat perfectly. I was captivated by their perfect form, their rigid torsos and pointed toes, the way they proudly showed their skill by joyfully dancing to a song that celebrated their city. Wandering outside of the main city streets of Galway, it is easy to stumble across the River Corrib and the open harbor. Walking past the museum and through the Spanish Arch (built in 1584) you stumble into a series of colorful buildings overlooking the ocean. These buildings are built on top of what was once the fishing village of Claddagh, where the Claddagh ring originated.

The third largest Irish city by population, Galway serves as the entrance to the western coast. From Galway, many tourists take bus tours to the Cliffs of Moher, the Connemara region, and the Aran Islands. Guinness: The Story of Ireland's Famous Stout

When I was in Ireland, I visited the Guinness Storehouse at the original St. James Gate in Dublin, Ireland. The storehouse is several floors tall, with specific exhibitions dedicated to how Guinness is made, their advertising campaigns over the years, how to properly taste and drink Guinness, and a glass sky floor with a bar. One of my friends said, after we had spent several hours wandering around, “It’s a Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, but for grown-ups.” Overwhelming and amazing, it is clear from the storehouse that Guinness has become an Irish sensation that has spread all over the world.

In 1759, Guinness founder Arthur Guinness signed a 9,000 year lease on a dilapidated building on St. James Street. (The lease has since been nullified, as the Guinness company purchased the land). Determined to make it in Dublin, Arthur Guinness began to brew ale until he heard about a dark beer becoming popular across the sea in England. He began brewing stout and started shipping barrels of it to England and America.

From these humble beginnings, the Guinness business continued to grow. At the forefront of globalization, creative advertising, and scientific brewing, the Guinness Company has grown into a worldwide sensation. Now, the Guinness brand is recognizable around the world and has millions of fans. Guinness offers gift sets full of Guinness merchandise, from iconic glasses to towels and bottle openers. Arthur Guinness, the man at the heart of the company, was born to servants in 1725. It is believed that his Father brewed beer for the master of the house. Arthur Guinness only has one portrait, so he is immortalized not in an image, but in his signature, which graces every bottle of Guinness. Even after his death, Arthur is still part of the company he worked so hard to start.

Arthur Guinness learned his brewing skills from his Father and passed these skills onto his son, who passed the business onto his son. Irish: The Language of Ireland

When I arrived in Ireland for my study abroad tenure, I was surprised to see two languages appear on all of the street signs. As we road on our bus through western Ireland on that first day, I noticed how different the street signs were from my native Michigan. On each sign we passed, the English name for something- a town, the airport, the nearest exit- appeared below another language, which I soon learned was Irish.... A language I didn’t know existed.

I knew people in Ireland spoke English, so I never really thought about the existence of another, native language. The Irish language has a long storied history that soon captured my imagination.

Irish is an ancient language, with some estimations putting its earliest roots about 2,500 years ago. Scholars think that Irish was spoken all throughout Ireland, giving the people of the Emerald Isle a common language that eventually was used for religious practices and poetry. Variations of the Celtic language also spread to Scotland, the Isle of Mann, and parts of England. The earliest written record historians have of the Irish language is on the Ogham Stones of the fifth and sixth centuries. Ogham was the way to write early Irish, a series of slashes and lines that operated in place of the Latin alphabet that would be adopted much later. Starting in the 1600s, as the neighboring England started gaining more power, the English language became necessary for communicating in trade and legal matters. Combined with the England’s physical conquering of Ireland, the English language began to be spread through Ireland. The influence spread from the east, which was closer to England, to the west. The western parts of Ireland retained a deeper connection to the language, which is why some regions today are part of the Gaeltacht, or places where the Irish language is still spoken. In the late 1800s, the Irish language was no longer commonly spoken in most of Ireland, and a cultural movement was started to preserve the language and the cultural importance that surrounded it.

Today, the Irish language is far from dead. One of the most noticeable things, as an American visiting Ireland, was the use of Irish words in slang. When someone first asked me “what’s the craic?” I responded the same way most native English speakers would; with absolute confusion. Craic is an Irish word that has come to mean “what’s up?” or “what’s fun?” Another famous word is “Slainte,” which is the Irish word for “cheers” or “good health.” In the pub, it was common to clink your glasses together and say “slainte!” This cheerful phrase appears on many Irish goods, such as this Slainte wall hanging!

I was also lucky enough to see the education of Irish language in action. I had an internship with an afterschool program, and would go into the classrooms to interact with the kids. Often, I would see their Irish homework hanging in the classroom, posters entirely in the language. All children are required to learn the Irish language in schools as an attempt to revive and preserve the language. From my perspective, it looked like the Irish language was making a comeback, at least culturally. The women I worked with at my internship, all in their forties, had anglicized names like Christine and Mary. The kids I worked with had mostly traditional Irish names like Aoife and Caomhill. The Irish language is still present in Ireland, even if it isn’t spoken everyday for most Irish people.

There are a few Irish phrases that strike me as particularly beautiful. Walking off the plane in the Shannon airport my first day in Ireland, I was surrounded by signs that read “Cead Mile Failte,” which means “A hundred thousand welcomes.” Even though I didn’t know what the words meant (remember, I didn’t even realize that Irish was a language at the time!), there was something comforting about the phrase. There is something beautiful and rich about the Irish language, and Cead Mile Failte sounds exactly like Irish hospitality feels. The phrase makes a great way to welcome guests, and this key ring hanger is the perfect way to do it!

I also love the phrase “Mo Anam Cara,” which means “my soul mate.” I think it’s a romantic phrase, and sounds soft and gentle when you say it out loud. Jewelry that reads “Mo Anam Cara” makes a stunning gift for a birthday or anniversary for a loved one.

Connemara: My Experience of Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way

Kirsten Fedorowicz studied abroad in Ireland from January- May 2017. She stayed in a small town in the beautiful region of Connemara. She now works as a Content Intern at Biddy Murphy, writing about Ireland as much as she can.

When I decided to study abroad in Ireland, I wasn’t expecting the mountains. In January of 2017, as the bus rounded corner after corner of rocky Irish roads, my eyes were fixed on the skyline. Everywhere I looked there were mountains rising into the sky, their rocky bodies consuming every inch of ground. I had grown up in rural Michigan, a land of trees and rivers, and had never seen a mountain before. I was absolutely captivated by this unexpected, stark landscape. Connemara and I were in love at first sight.

For four months of my sophomore year of college, I lived in a small village on the Renvyle Peninsula called Tullycross, which consisted of the line of traditional thatched cottages the twenty American students lived in, two pubs, a hotel, a diner, and a church. Tullycross is an average rural town in western Ireland, with your friendly neighborhood bartenders teasing you about your accent by the time you’ve had your second Guinness. The Connemara region, and western Ireland as a whole, is part of the Gaeltacht. The Gaeltacht is considered regions where the Irish language is spoken. When visiting one of the pubs, you could overhear older patrons conversing in Irish.

From Tullycross, I was able to explore the breathtaking beauty of Connemara in any direction. I went for a walk almost everyday, and managed to find something new every time that I went. Connemara is well-known for it’s stunning views. I was soon able to climb the mountains that had so captured my attention. In Connemara, there is a mountain range called the twelve bends. Diamond Hill is accessible through Connemara National Park in the nearby village of Letterfrack. I climbed Diamond Hill several times, and was always astounded by the view of the nearby bay and my other favorite mountain; in the right of this frame, you can see Letter Hill, also known as Tully Mountain. It looks a lot bigger when you’re climbing it! While Diamond Hill is outfitted with a walking path, Tully Mountain was not, so you had to be careful what day you climbed its boggy surface so you wouldn’t fall in!

I was captured by the beaches of Connemara as well. You can’t go anywhere in Connemara without running into the Atlantic Ocean, and each beach looks different if the ocean is at high tide or low tide! This picture is of White Strand Beach at low tide. I would often stand in the ocean with my waterproof hiking boots on, curled up in my Irish sweater and wish I could put my toes through the soft, fine sand without freezing! Fragrances of Ireland was inspired by the scent of the Connemara beaches to create their trademark fragrance, Inis Energy of the Sea! Inis captures the feeling of gazing out over the ocean, boots rooted in fine white sand so you can have have that feeling wherever you are.

Much to my surprise, coming from snowy Michigan in January, Ireland still had plants growing. My favorite was the gorse bush, a bush armed with thistles that had small yellow blossoms. They stayed in bloom all four months I was there, and the plant’s cheerful yellow blossoms on the side of the road added a touch of color to the often gray landscape. Once Spring came, Connemara came alive will the bloom of plants! When I would walk back to Tullycross my nose would be filled with the scent of flowers and greenery. I visited Kylemore Abbey, a old castle estate that has since turned into a convent and attraction, during the spring to see their beautiful Victorian gardens! Fragrances of Ireland is also inspired by springtime in Connemara to create an Eau de Toilette of the same name, which captures the beautiful scent of growth in the Connemara region.

At the end of our study abroad trip, one of my closest friends bought a Connemara marble necklace. “Now I’ll always have a piece of this place,” she told me. We both knew that Connemara had weasled it’s way to our hearts, and we would never forget the place or its people.

Connemara Marble is a rare stone found only in western Ireland, and captures the unique beauty of that place. Always green but varying in shade, Connemara Marble is quintessentially Irish. Celtic Crosses of Ireland: A Glimpse of History

The Celtic Cross is one of Ireland’s most recognisable symbols dating back to the Early Middle Ages. They were made famous by the high cross, featured in many churches and graveyards. The origins of the Celtic Cross is not very well known however, many people believe that the circle represents a halo, while others see the ring as Roman sun-god, Invictus. There are many famous Celtic Crosses and High Crosses in Ireland, especially across Ireland’s ancient east - let’s take a look at my top 3!

Clonmacnoise

Located in the Clonmacnoise monastery, this is Ireland’s most famous high cross dating back to the 6th century. The cross is carved out of Clare sandstone making the intricate designs and patterns even more mesmerizing - along with their survival all this time!

Ahenny

The high crosses of Ahenny, Co. Tipperary are quite different with a much more central ring. They are also made from sandstone featuring beautiful designs of David bringing Goliath back to Jerusalem.

Muiredach

Muiredach’s high cross is located in the now ruined monastic site of Monasterboice, in County Louth, Ireland. It dates back to 10th century with the cross itself being carved from a single block of sandstone - the capstone and base were carved separately. It is generally considered one of Europe’s most impressive surviving pieces of early medieval stonework. There are 124 figures on the cross and 17 patterns on the surrounding ring. Irish Myths & Legends

Halloween is fast approaching and so it’s time to get into the spirit of things. Ireland is nation covered in history, myths and legends. This is the perfect time of year to remember these ancient stories. So grab a blanket, a cup of tea and imagine the sounds of a crackling fire as we dive into Ireland’s ancient myths and legends!

Many believe that Halloween actually began in Ireland. Here it is called Oíche Shamhna. In Irish, ‘Oíche’ means ‘night’ and so Oíche Shamhna refers to Halloween night. Samhain (Sow-in) was a festival that marked the end of the harvest season in Ireland. It would be celebrated from midnight on the 31st of October to midnight on November 1st (Day of the Dead). People would celebrate by dancing and telling stories around the fire. It was believed that the line between the living and the dead was very thin on this night so people dressed up in costume to disguise themselves from the spirits!

The Banshee

The Banshee is one of the most famous Irish legends. I even recall my own grandparents telling about her and the people that they knew who had heard her cry! It is said that the Banshee was the spirit of an ancient Irish woman. She could appear old and haggard or young and beautiful but was distinguished by her fiery red hair and green cloak. She would come down from the hills at night and sweep effortlessly across the land. It is said that any family that heard her cry would soon meet death!

Fairy Forts

I certainly remember hearing stories of the fairy fort as a child. The was one located on the hill next to my mother’s family home. A fairy fort is a collection of trees, bushes or earth banks that form a circle. There are many myths surrounding the forts. Some say that the fairies are kind, adding value to a property by making the land more fertile and making the cows who graze on it produce more milk. Some say anyone who steps inside a fairy fort will die inside it! All I know is that my family would never let me go near it. I even remember my grandmother telling me stories from when she was a little girl. Her mother told her of all the people who visited the fairy forts at night. Apparently you could see them with their lanterns making their way up the hill in the darkness. They would beg the fairies to remedy tragedies that were going on in their lives - a pure act of desperation. For example, there was a woman who went to the fairy fort and begged the fairies to return to her a child that she had lost. Apparently the woman was given a changeling and was to be haunted by the child forever!

The Salmon of Knowledge

Yes, this sounds like a crazy story and - well, it is! It is said that there once was a salmon that was extremely elusive and contained all the knowledge of the world. Whoever tasted the salmon first would immediately absorb all of the fishes knowledge. And so, an ancient poet and philosopher, Finegas, set off to catch the fish with his servant Fionn. Finegas spent seven years trying to catch the fish and eventually got him! He gave the fish to his servant Fionn for preparation and cooking. While cooking the fish, Fionn burnt his thumb and sucked it to relieve the pain. In that instant, Fionn absorbed all of the knowledge of the world much to Finegas’ dismay! It is said that from that day forth, any time Fionn wanted to know something, he just sucked his thumb!

Tír na nÓg

Tír na nÓg (‘Land of the Young’) is another famous Irish legend. Tír na nÓg is a magical world in which people are forever young, beautiful and peaceful. The most famous version of the story is that of Oisín and Niamh. Oisín was a human hero from Ireland who fell in love with Niamh, a beautiful young woman from Tír na nÓg. Niamh vows to take Oisín to her land on her magical horse that can ride across water. They leave Ireland and go back to her home for 3 years at which point, Oisín begins to feel quite homesick for his land and family in Ireland. He wishes to return to visit and Niamh allows him to take her magical horse back but warns him not to touch the ground when he returns. Upon arrival back in Ireland, Oisín soon learns that 300 years have passed is his absence. He falls off the horse to the ground where he instantly ages 300 years and dies of old age!

One Year Later: Returning to Ireland after the Year of a Lifetime!

Last year, on the 16th of July, I bid a teary farewell to my parents in Dublin airport and embarked on the biggest adventure of my life so far. With two suitcases (the size of small cars), I walked through security and onto a plane that would take me to my new life. Seven hours later, I found myself walking out of O’Hare Airport and into the summer heat of Illinois, unaware of the massive journey I was about to undertake. So here’s my story - an Irish girl in the United States!

The Summer was hot. I was lucky enough to find a lovely wee apartment in Kalamazoo that was the perfect size in a perfect location at the perfect price. Only one snag - no air conditioning… on the upper floor… of a dormer. It was essentially a sauna which was great for my skin but jeez, it was hot! Haha! My poor Irish body fueled by rain, cloud cover and hot tea couldn’t manage the burning sun. Thankfully, everywhere else in America is airconditioned and so it wasn’t too bad. Plus, that apartment was a blessing in Winter - warm, cozy and homely. Here's a picture of a wee corner of my kitchen which I made look all homely with my postcards from my travels.

As the weeks went on, my search for a job intensified but then fate intervened. On a hot Sunday in September, I found myself watching the All Ireland Gaelic Football final online. Mayo were playing (as they always are - MAYO FOR SAM! WOOO!) and my mother was at the match in Croke Park, Dublin. She messaged me to tell me that people were tweeting in from all over the world to say they were watching the match and those tweets were being put up on the big screen! So I took to Twitter. A while later I got a tweet back from someone called ‘BiddyMurphy1’ (feel free to follow us!) and I did some research. And here was this lovely Irish shop based in South Haven just one town over! What luck! Well I took my chances and wrote a fairly cheeky email - packed full of all the Irish banter and craic I had - ‘I upped shticks from Mayo’.. ‘I know I’m awful cheeky’.. ‘Mayo in the final, pure devastation’ etc. Low and behold a few days later they invited me over for a chat - turned out they had been looking for someone to manage social media and get the Irish accent across and I had already demonstrated just that! I was walking on air - I couldn’t have been happier - I was so thrilled to be joining the Biddy Team (and I’m still honoured to be a part of it)! The Biddy Team are pictured below.

Fast forward a few months. My time in BiddyMurphy was the highlight of every week. I couldn’t believe how much I was learning and how lovely everyone was. They completely took me under their wing and I was just so delighted to have a wee Irish family away from home. I spent my free time exploring the area and then in February, I flew down to New Orleans to spend Mardi Gras with one of my best friends! I even made it back in one piece! Haha! I loved the parades and beads (and hurricane drinks! Haha!). Me and my friends on Pink Day during Mardi Gras!

Time started to fly. One week bled into the next and the next etc. Soon, it was June and my parents arrived in America. We embarked upon a huge road trip across the states, heading south through Indianapolis, Nashville, Memphis and New Orleans before flying to Las Vegas, renting an RV and then taking in loads of National Parks and finishing in LA! I won’t go into too much detail here but you can read about that trip in the blog linked HERE! Needless to say, it was amazing, unbelievable and life changing - to put it mildly.

Time continued to fly and so, it wasn’t long until I found myself back in O’Hare kissing goodbye to all the people I love and who made this year in the states so wonderful. With a third suitcase in tow full of all the memories I made that year, I boarded my plane back to Dublin. That was last Saturday. I arrived back into Dublin airport on Sunday morning and headed straight to Croke Park for the match - the same match that I had watched and made my Biddy connection last year. I couldn’t help but reflect on how incredibly lucky I am - to have found myself in a perfect little apartment, I made amazing friends, I found a job surrounded by some of the greatest people I’ve known and surrounded by pieces of home, I saw a huge portion of the world and I arrived home safe and sound to a family that I missed and who missed me! I guess lucky doesn’t actually cover it! (Here is a picture of the Biddy Flag flying in Croke Park last week featuring my lovely Da!)

Thank you to everyone who made this year extra special. I’m still part of the Biddy Team, just the view has changed - I’m currently sitting in my office looking out at Mayo’s famously torrential rain and I’m so delighted to be back, staring out at it. Onto the next adventure… I better bring my umbrella!

Save Money with a Rustic Themed Wedding and Decorations

Weddings represent a glorious time in two people’s lives. Together they are joined in marriage in front of family and friends in a beautiful setting. Sounds perfect, doesn’t it? Most people realize that wedding costs add up very quickly. Catering, the dress, wedding decorations, music, and the venue can all put a serious dent in anyone’s budget. There are ways to save on cost that can help start your lives together debt-free.

The Venue

You have the perfect venue on a mountaintop in the Rocky Mountains that can only be reached by helicopter. That’s not realistic, is it? There are TONS of gorgeous wedding venues, and some that aren’t technically “venues” but just beautiful places. Doing some research online or asking around can help you find a beautiful place to get married at. The reception can be held elsewhere either outdoors in a friend’s nice big backyard, or a church or another building. There are ways to save on the venue; you just have to look and get creative.

Make Your Own Decorations

Yes, you can make your wedding decorations. Using wood pallets, mason jars, metal buckets, décor from friend’s weddings, etc. can all be done to lower your wedding costs but still have it look fantastic. Creating wood signs, tables, frames, and tabletop items from pieces of wood or pallets is easy and costs almost nothing. If you have a drill, a hammer, and nails, wood stain or paint, then you are good to go. Use caution when creating wood décor items because drills and saw blades can cause damage. Wear safety gear so you can look fabulous on your day.

Meaningful is Priceless

You don’t have to splurge thousands of dollars on gifts, décor, or even meaningful items. Doing something simple and from the heart, either for your bride (or groom!) and guests will mean more to them than any price tag. Traditions are a great way to make a statement of love. In Celtic weddings, a coin or token is usually given to the bride from the groom. This means that the groom will always look after her and protect her. Something traditional, simple, and meaningful not only saves money, but it is a direct and meaningful message from the heart.

Donate to Your Fund

Another way to save on costs is to ask for monetary assistance instead. This can be a delicate subject for many, but many have started a “honeymoon fund” in lieu of wedding presents. Guests, if they so desire, can place a donation in the honeymoon fund instead of bringing a wedding present. If the couple generally has a lot of what they need for their household already, this is a great idea to cut down on the costs of traveling or having a honeymoon.

A simple, rustic wood décor item or creation can be built for this purpose. A drop box created from pallets or something similar can be built easily. It can be painted, stenciled, etc. for a look that suits the wedding and for guests to place their donation.

Your special day doesn’t have to break the bank. Incorporate something traditional or memorable that your significant other will remember. Making your decorations is a great money-saver, and you can recruit friends and family to help, just make sure to be safe and use protective wear and watch out for extension cords.

Recruiting assistance, scouting out good venues, and planning your décor ahead of time can help you save money. Building your decorations is fun and can bring family and friends together, and when your wedding day is over, you can sell them to help start your life off with less debt. Project Children – Breaking the Divide

I’m sure many of you know about the troubles that took place 40 years ago in Northern Ireland between the Catholics and Protestants that resulted in many lives lost and ruined. Seeing imagery and videos through the news inspired two Irish immigrants to take action and help out those children caught in the cross fire.

In 1975 Project Children was born; an idea by Denis Mulcahy, along with his brother Pat. They had both grown up in County Cork, Ireland, and immigrated to New York, where they joined the New York Police Department. Denis is still with the force; he's a bomb squad detective. Pat retired early because of an injury and returned to County Cork.

In 1975, Northern Ireland was a boiling pot of political violence. Armed soldiers, rolling tanks, and surveillance cameras were everywhere, trying to keep the lid on. People were dying and children were growing up scared. Protestant and Catholic families were insulating themselves against each other - fleeing integrated neighborhoods in search of segregated enclaves. Denis and Pat decided to do something to help the children. That summer they brought six kids from Northern Ireland-three Protestants and three Catholics to Greenwood Lake, NY, where they lived. The idea was twofold. Most importantly they wanted to get the kids away from the violence and the paramilitaries who work double time recruiting kids during school breaks. Denis and Pat also wanted to show the Protestant and Catholic kids that they could live together and like each other.

Their plan worked very well. One of the Catholic boys became great friends with one of the Protestants. Years later, when the Catholic boy got married, the Protestant boy was at his side as his best man. Then the Protestant boy got married, and the Catholic boy was at his side, returning the favor. Project Children has grown a lot from the initial six kids and the $1600 budget it took to bring them over.

Denis is an extraordinary man and could not have known in 1975 just how strong and how sweeping Project Children's influence would be. He takes no salary from Project Children and works long hours tending to the big plans and small details of running the organization. Over the past twenty-five years he has quietly masterminded summer vacations in America for more than 14,000 children in Northern Ireland. He has given
these children - Protestant and Catholics a much-needed break from the grim politics of their own country and an extraordinary chance to play together. He hasn't done it all alone, and he will be the first to tell you. While talking to Denis, if you try to praise him or thank for his hard work and the amazing opportunity we have been given, he will quickly start praising Project Children host families, area coordinators, fundraising volunteers,
and benefactors. Denis considers himself simply one of the many. But Denis is truly the heart and soul of Project Children.

Denis has been recognized by President Bill Clinton. He's been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize-twice. He's been honored at gatherings across America and Northern Ireland. But all that praise doesn't swell Denis' head. He still pitches in wherever he's needed. When a young Belfast girl's luggage was put on the wrong plane in New York, it was Denis who tracked it down in Dublin.

In 1995, Project Children decided to build on the success of the children’s program. The organization extended its reach to university students by initiating the Summer Work Travel program, the program I am lucky enough to be a part of.

With such a large network of coordinators and host families built up over the years throughout the US, Project Children could pre-arrange several placements through their extensive contacts. In much the same way as the children’s program, students were brought over to the US during the summer to work and live. This gave the students the opportunity to gain some invaluable work experience in an international setting.

Now running for almost 20 years, over 600 students have taken part in the program. It has grown from the initial 10 students per summer, to over 45 students some summers. Similar to the children’s program, this has all been made possible through private donations and government grants, the hospitality of the host families, and the effort of the Project Children volunteers.

This year, 23 students including myself made the trek from little-old Ireland to the United States all studying towards various degrees including Business, Law and Medicine to name a few. We are placed throughout America in New York State, Michigan and Alabama. Given Ward and Mary’s strong Irish connection, they were keen to take on another intern and I was placed here based on their needs and my previous experience in business and retail.

Project Children works very closely with Habitat for Humanity in Tuscaloosa, Alabama so before we began our internships, we went there for a week to aid the restoration of 2 local housing projects. We stayed on a remote campsite outside of Tuscaloosa center with no internet access and basic amenities. It was like something from a movie – we would all help out with meals and eat together in a big communal hall. It had outdoor toilets and showers and in the evenings we would sit around a campfire making s’mores and singing camp songs. I felt so young again! The work we did that week was intense due to the heat and humidity (which is to be expected in Alabama) but despite all the obstacles we completed our housing project and at the end of the week we all attended a ceremony where we presented the newly refurbished house to its owner. The house I worked on was a donated house that had been turned into a community center by a wonderful woman who gave up her time years ago to give free piano lessons to less fortunate children. It was amazing to give back to her after her many years of service to the community and the look of glee in her eyes was priceless. While we were in Alabama FOX news sent a reporter out for some information about the project and I was interviewed about my
experiences. A picture can be seen below! (This misspelled my name unfortunately!)

Biddy's Latest Intern - Welcome Chris!

Dia Duit! (hello)

Hello my name is Christopher Kenny, from Northern Ireland and I am the new summer intern at Biddy Murphy Celtic Goods. I am taking part in a cross-community project called ‘Project Children’ which aims to provide 25 university students and graduates with summer internships across America in an attempt to see what life is like in the United States, both inside and outside of work. My first week in the states was spent in Tuscaloosa, Alabama where the group and I worked with Habitat for Humanity on 2 housing refurbishment projects. A tough
but worthwhile week that allowed us to gel as a group, create some great memories and also help out those less fortunate rebuild their lives. More insight to my time in Alabama will be in my next post!

I am a Business Studies graduate who finished up university in May of this year and now I’m hoping to find a full time job in my area of study. This opportunity is giving me some great experience into what working life is like and what the role of marketing executive really entails behind the scenes. I am working with great people who are very talented at what they do and they have taught me so much already.

On the topic of meeting great people, I should give a shout-out to my host family for the summer Ward and Mary Gahan, owners of Biddy Murphy. Ward and Mary, along with Cormac their son and Mocha the dog, have been so kind and welcoming to me and although I’ve only been here 3 weeks it seems so much longer, as I’ve just fit right into life here.

This experience is eye opening to me as I didn’t truly understand how much Americans appreciate Irish things. For example we sell Irish turf incense in the Biddy store, but in Ireland all you have to do is to walk outside your house to enjoy such a smell!! I’m also learning incredible new things about the Irish culture I didn’t even know myself, like the beautiful Celtic symbol meanings or unique spots American travelers have found on their
journeys to Ireland. It’s really making me have a much greater love and appreciation for the country I call home.

Some of you may have met me already from visiting the Biddy store in South Haven, Michigan but if you have not give us a call in and I’ll let you make fun of my accent lol.
Over the next few weeks of my internship I’ll be working with our wonderful social media guru Deirdre to construct a few more blog entries about my time here, trips to Chicago and Ohio I’m taking and my opinion of life in America.

As I made trips back and forth to Ireland in the early 00’s, people would offer to give me money to bring them back a gift of a sweater or some crystal or Barry's Tea. I was pure delighted to help them out but the mad dash through duty free in Dublin airport was fierce! Most of what I found was the cheap crap and a lot of it wasn’t even made in Ireland. For all the hassle that it involved, I wanted make sure I was getting higher quality products - a real Irish made jumper (not a sweater) and the Irish crystal (which was nearly bursting out of the bottom of the bag crushing all my poor Tayto Crisps!)

‘There has to be something here’ I thought. Most Irish shops that I’ve visited in the States only carry the hoodies with the embroidered shamrocks or jewelry and homeware that is made in China.

But given that I was the only Irishman within a 70 mile radius of South Haven, I'd better find a way of reaching all the Irish people I'd met along the way like those from the Milwaukee Irish Festival and Chicago Irish Fest - places like that.....

The internet! The World Wide Web had been fabulous when my late wife and I had run the bed and breakfast so sez I to meself. ‘Why not sell the best of Ireland on d'internet? Dis ting could take off…’

And so, I put the wheel in motion! I started the website; loading pottery on there and gorgeous jumpers and then the stuff started coming into South Haven! The lads at the Post Office were swearing at me for all these bloody boxes arriving ...or maybe they were just swearing at me...anyway....

So we were going great! The website had the stuff up on it and friends were looking at the pottery coming in and saying "I'd love to buy that from you!". "You’ll have to wait until I get it online and you can buy it then!” says I. “Why can't I buy it from you now? You should just open a store! Lots of people would buy the sweaters”!... "Yeah but I don't wanna open a store where there are no Irish Americans. This isn't Boston or the Southside of Chicago" says I. “I know... Can you get me some tea and chocolate?"

Fast forward to 2008- "Let’s just get serious about this online thing......" says I. So Annette & Sarah started working away. But Sarah was very selfish and went and had a baby (haha!). We started selling kilt towels...by the hundreds and hundreds and the guys at the Post Office (who are actually amazing) started on to me again! “More boxes here...about 30 of them....Come get them". Cormac was bagging them at Christmas and getting blisters. I still call him up and say "kilt towels" before a final exam for that extra bit of effort!

So it’s been 13 years...I mean TURTEEN and dey say in Tipperary......

My Irish Parents On The Big American Road Trip!

Last month, on the first of June, my lovely Irish parents flew into the States! For the first time in a year, we were finally reunited! I was so glad that my parents made the big trip across the Atlantic to see me - but in fairness, this was no ordinary holiday. One month, eleven States, six National Parks, nine major cities and two Irish parents. Take a look inside the holiday of a lifetime and all the craic in between!

After collecting my parents in Chicago, we all piled into the car and headed east for Kalamazoo. It was amazing to see them and catch up on everything that had been happening at home. We spent 6 days in Kalamazoo, visiting with my boyfriend’s lovely family, taking trips to South Haven, visiting the Biddy Murphy team and getting to know my day-to-day life. They were so thrilled that I have so many wonderful people in my life here and they enjoyed getting to know all of them! We also visited the Gilmore Classic Car Museum. For all those who have never been, GO! It’s amazing. The museum houses over 400 cars that are perfectly restored. My Dad was a mechanic when he was a young lad so he was in his element! It was one of the highlights of the holiday!

After spending some time in Michigan, we packed up the rental car and began our journey south. First stop: Indianapolis. There, we took in the city and enjoyed visiting the Indiana War Museum which was full of really interesting artifacts. It was quite an experience. Having only one night in Indianapolis, we quickly hit the road again. On our way down south we stopped off in the cutest wee town called Glendale, Kentucky! It was so sweet! The town was tiny and full of old wooden western style buildings - like the ones you see in old western movies! Each building was full of cute antiques and old odds and ends. It was really lovely. 10/10 would recommend!

Next stop: Nashville, Tennessee. Although we didn’t plan it, we arrived at the best imaginable time. Both the Country Music Awards and the final of the Stanley Cup were taking place in the city that weekend. The town was BUZZING. The streets were packed with people and music poured out of every bar. I asked my taxi driver what time the basketball match started. He let me know that the Stanley Cup is actually ice hockey and laughed at me quite a lot but in my defense, it was 109 degrees! Who, in their right mind, would have thought that ice was even on the same planet at that point! Haha! We visited the Grand Ole Opry one morning followed by a spot of shopping in town. Dad got the opportunity to live out his dream and get a real Stetson hat in Nashville while Mother-dearest went out and bought herself the boots which they say are ‘made for walking’.

On wards to Memphis, Tennessee! Home of my Dad’s hero, Elvis. Of course, we had to visit Graceland. It was really interesting but definitely a different experience for my parents. Having grown up listening to his music, watching his films and generally seeing most aspects of his life, it was surreal to be standing in his living room. Dad always dreamed of meeting Elvis and spoke of the day he found out that the King had passed away. It really did send shock waves around the world. The tour was fascinating and we also got a chance to see his planes. Afterwards, we headed into town and got some great food while listening to a blues band. It all felt like a movie!

The halfway point: New Orleans, Louisiana. I was so delighted to be back in NOLA, having visited many times before. My best friend is from New Orleans and we were so delighted to get the opportunity to stay with her and her amazing family. We took the ferry across to the city and visited the War Museum and of course, took a trip to the French Quarter and Bourbon Street. My friend’s Dad was a fantastic tour guide and showed us all of the sights. All too soon, it was time to head to the airport for part 2!

Las Vegas! It was hot. It was unimaginably and worryingly hot. 120 degrees to be precise. We spent those couple of days indoors. My Mother managed to burn her dress on a wall when leaning against it for a photo. The elastic in the dress shrivelled and balled up. It was insane! But don’t worry - we got the Las Vegas experience. Cocktails, slot machines and a show! We went to see Cirque du Soleil. Of course that was incredible too. On our last morning in Vegas, we headed to the RV rental place and picked up our new home for the remaining 10 days.

The next 9 days were a blur. On our way out of Vegas, we visited the Hoover Dam and then headed for the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. No movie or photograph has ever or will ever do it justice. It was truly breathtaking. After a quick bite to eat and a visit from his fella, we headed for Bryce Canyon and arrived there at about 2AM. Thankfully we had a day or two to take in our beautiful surroundings before heading for Zion National Park. This was probably my favourite place that we visited. It was simply stunning. The red rock faces and winding roads - it was all beyond description. However, it did set the tone for the remainder of our driving experience. Long, winding, narrow roads over cliff edges. Hair-raising stuff.

Next on the agenda: The Great Basin National Park. This National Park is the least visited National Park in the US. This did not surprise me. The drive was long and varied between dead straight flats to winding mountainous driving with little or no towns to stop along the way. The town at the entrance to the park was named Baker. It was tiny but very cute. The Great Basin is worth a visit though as it is one of very few certified Dark Parks in the world! There was absolutely no light pollution so we could see all of the stars including the milky way! I’ve never seen anything like it!

The next day we hit the big drive! 450ish miles from Baker to Lake Tahoe across route 50 - America’s Loneliest Road. That is no understatement. The road was incredibly straight, like all of those roads you see on the front of National Geographic magazines. There as one town on the way which was absolutely tiny. It was quite an experience though and we kept track of every other car we met on the 400 miles across - 37 cars. Finally we arrived in Lake Tahoe quite late in the evening.

The next morning we woke up to some unusual guests outside the bathroom! I literally couldn’t believe it! Mama bear probably wasn’t far away so we kept our distance. My parents were in pure disbelief. They were a long way from County Mayo! It was pure surreal to feel the heat of the sun and swim in the lake (which was Artic by the way) and be also surrounded by snow covered mountains, which we got to walk in when we headed for Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.

For the last few days, we took in the giant trees of Sequoia National Park and marveled at how incredibly old they were. It was so beautiful. We then headed into LA where we spent the last two days. We were staying in Santa Monica so we spent time walking the pier and exploring the surrounding area. We also took the time to visit Hollywood and see the stars on the street. Soon, it was time to say goodbye again!

The trip flew past. It was so wonderful to see the country and to spend time with my parents after spending so much time apart. It really was the adventure of a lifetime and I’m so glad that we got to see so much. They’re back in Ireland now reading this I’m sure! (Don’t worry Mam, I’ll be home in a few weeks! Haha)! How To Stop Your Candles From Tunnelling!

Are your candles tunnelling down when you light them? Here are some really simple ways to stop tunnelling, allowing you to get the most out of your candles!

Tip #1: Don’t trim the candle’s wick on the first burn. The first burn for a candle is very important so keeping the wick length can prove to be important. Too short and the candle flame will not melt the top layer of wax.

Tip #2: Let the candle burn for several hours when first lit. This will allow the whole top layer of the candle to melt out to the very edges. This will form a ‘memory’ melt the next time you light the candle.

Tip #3: Try not to have frequent short burns. This will encourage the candle to tunnel. It is better to light the candle for longer and less often than for shorter lengths more frequently.

Tip #4: If your candle has already tunnelled - Make your candle a tin foil hat and cut a hole in the top for the flame. This will allow heat to radiate down and melt the edge wax. However, this can be dangerous. Make sure to do this in an empty sink and do not leave the candle unattended. When removing the foil hat, remember it will be hot and may burn you!

Tip #5: If you’re having trouble getting the edges to melt down, you can always cut the edge areas off and melt them over a tea light wax burner to get the most out of the fragrance!

An Irish Summer: Top 10 Must Have Experiences

Summer is my favourite time to be at home in Ireland. The days are long and there’s plenty of sunshine to get out and explore! Here is a list of my top 10 favourite things to do during an Irish summer! Although the weather can vary during the months of May, June, July & August, we usually see great long spells of sun - but here’s a TOP TIP anyway; if you really want to be there while the sun’s out, plan your trip for June. June is great for what we call ‘Leaving Cert Weather’. The Leaving Cert is kind of like the SAT’s here. They are exams that all secondary students sit before going off to college. They take place from the 1st Wednesday until the end of June. In the grand tradition of Murphy’s law, when students have to study, sit inside and do exams - the weather is always spectacular. Haha! So that’ll probably be your best bet for finding the perfect weather for all of your Summer activities!

#1 Take a Walk or Cycle on the Wild Atlantic Way

The Wild Atlantic Way is a route that takes you from the very tip of North Donegal to Kinsale in South Cork. Almost the entire length of the route (which is over 1500 miles) is coastal. Choose a section of the route (or challenge yourself and take it all), use it to see stunning beaches cliffs and cute wee coastal towns! The sunshine will be great for taking in the views and of course, you can always take a dip in the sea when the sun gets too hot!

#2 Enjoy some Irish Music & Dance at the Fleadh Cheoil

The All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil takes place in Ennis, Co.Clare from the 13th-21st of August. It is a huge Irish Music competition! Musicians from all over the country compete to be the festival champion. The festival is full of Irish culture, music & merriment. Last year, over 400,000 people attended the Fleadh! You’ll love the dancing, music, food, drinks, laughs and more! It really is a must see!

#3 Climb Croagh Patrick

On the last Sunday of July (which will be July 30th this year) thousands of pilgrims flock to Mayo to climb Croagh Patrick (pronounced ‘Crow Patrick’)! This day is also referred to as ‘Reek Sunday’ as the mountain is often called the Reek by locals. The patron Saint of Ireland, St. Patrick himself is said to have fasted for 40 days and 40 nights on top of the mountain! Now, visitors can attend mass in the church on top of the mountain on that day! However, you can always pick a different day to climb if you’d prefer the area to be a little quieter. Climbing the mountain is very difficult as it is very steep and covered in loose rocks & stones, however the payoff is well worth it. Provided the weather is clear, visitors can enjoy views out over Clew Bay and its 365 islands - one for every day of the week!

#4 Jump Off Blackrock Pier in Galway

Located in Salthill, Galway, Blackrock pier is a favourite for many in the west of Ireland. The area is great for swimming and features high diving boards or steps into the water. There are lifeguards on duty during the summer months and many people flock to the area for the chance to take the plunge! But make sure you take note of warning signs and lifeguards - the tide must be in for diving so please don’t jump unless the tide requirements are met! However, if you catch the right day, you can happily stay there all day swimming, diving and simply enjoying the sun.

#5 Take a Stroll in Phoenix Park, Dublin

Phoenix Park is Europe’s largest enclosed park! It really is worth a long walk. There is plenty of wildlife to see such as wild deer, foxes, hedgehogs, rabbits and more! Take a picnic along and enjoy the sun! If you have no luck with the wild animals, head over to Dublin Zoo which is located in the park! The zoo is great fun and all the animals are well looked after by their loving keepers. See the lions, tigers, zebras, elephants, giraffes, wolves, penguins and more!

#6 Take in The Cliffs of Moher

What kind of list would this be if I didn’t mention the Cliffs of Moher?! The cliffs are stunning all year round but on a clear day in Summer, nothing can beat that awesome view. The breathtaking view stretches as far out into the Atlantic as imaginable and visitors can also peer down at the the splashing waves and rocks over 700ft below! The cliffs stretch for about 5 miles along the coast and are easily one of Ireland’s best known landmarks! Visitors can also enjoy the museum built into the hillside on top of the cliffs as well as a cup of tea with a view! I can’t recommend it highly enough!

#7 Match Day at Croke Park

Croke Park is probably the most famous stadium in Ireland. Every year in August and September, Croke Park hosts the quarters, semis and finals of the All-Ireland Gaelic Football and Hurling Finals! This is definitely my favourite time of the year. I literally cannot describe the atmosphere in the stadium! Over 82,000 fans screaming their lungs out and all the shared highs and lows of the game! As a Mayo woman, the All-Ireland Gaelic Football Final is always a tense time in the county, full of excitement and worry. It’s an incredible experience to have so I highly recommend finding some tickets and heading to one of the games!

#8 Enjoy a Music Festival

Ireland hosts some of the greatest music festivals in the world! Our most popular Music festival is ‘Electric Picnic’. In previous years, performers included ‘Florence & The Machine’, ‘Duran Duran’, ‘Blondie’, ‘Blur’, ‘Sam Smith’, ‘Outkast’ and many, many more! The festival takes place over a weekend and visitors can camp, enjoy great food as well as other stages that include comedy etc. It’s a huge event. But fear not, if that music isn’t your thing, we’ve a festival for that. ‘Longitude’ covers hip hop. ‘Indiependence’ covers indie music, ‘Body & Soul’ is a soul & arts festival. ‘Life Festival’ covers techno music and ‘Rockathon’ covers rock music! Of course, there’s always ‘Sea Sessions’ that has a bit of everything as well as being located on a beach so you can enjoy your music and surfing! There’s really a lot to take in so put on your wellies, grab a tent and get dancing!

#9 The Redbull Soap Box Races

This is guaranteed to be a lot of fun! People spend all year creating the most outrageous soapbox cars to race down St.Patrick’s Hill in Cork. Huge crowds gather to watch them whiz by and it’s a lot of fun! Laughs guaranteed! Visitors can expect to enjoy great food, a great atmosphere and a great show! Definitely worth a visit!

#10 A Pint in Templebar

Sure, I couldn’t finish this list without mentioning Templebar. During the summer months, Templebar is hopping with fantastic live Irish music and events. There’s nothing better than enjoying an ice cold pint in Dublin City Centre on a hot day! Highly recommend! This experience will stick with you, even if it’s just the one. Hearing the laughs, feeling the sun, listening to music, a great Irish pint of Guinness - it really is the best feeling!

Take A Hike! The Best Trails in Ireland & The USA!

Summer is now well & truly on it’s way - so it’s time to get your walking boots out! If you’re going to be in Ireland this Summer, I’ve compiled a list of some of the best walks & cycles for you! But fear not - If you can’t make it to the Emerald Isle, we’ve also a selection of American trails that are Must-See’s! So pack a lunch, put on your boots and get going!

Howth Cliff Path, Co.Dublin - Approx. 2-3 Hrs.

Howth is one of Dublin’s most beautiful coastal towns! Surrounded by cliffs and rolling green coastal hills, Howth is the ideal spot for a long walk! Hill-walkers enjoy getting out into nature while still being less than an hour from Dublin City Centre! Along the way you can see St. Mary’s Abbey which was built in the 15th Century, Balscadden House that housed W.B Yeats and if you’re lucky enough to get a clear day - you can see far down the Wicklow coast and Bailey Lighthouse which has been there since 1814! Make sure you wrap up in one of our lovely Aran Sweaters! Warm & durable - perfect for the hike!

Croagh Patrick (AKA ‘The Reek’), Co.Mayo - Approx. 3.5 Hrs.

Now this is my neck of the woods! Croagh (pronounced ‘Crow’) Patrick is one of the most famous mountains in Ireland. St. Patrick, the patron Saint of Ireland, was said to have fasted on top of this mountain for 40 days and 40 nights back in 441AD! Hikers can still see his bed on top of the mountain. Croagh Patrick is also unusual as it has a small church at the top, over 2,500ft up! The church was built in 1905. Every year, on the last day of July, many pilgrims come to climb the mountain - it’s called ‘Reek Sunday’! A fair word of warning - Croagh Patrick can be very steep and rocky in places so it might not be for everyone. Raingear is essential as it is often very wet and rainy - not to mention severe winds at the top. Wait for a day with clear weather for the added bonus of seeing beautiful Clew Bay below! There are 365 islands in Clew Bay - one for each day of the year! Why not take a look at our beautiful Irish-Made Blackthorn Walking Sticks? Ideal for the climb!

Benbulbin Loop, Sligo, Approx. 4 Hrs.

The Benbulbin Loop is a great walk for a Sunday! The loop takes you around King’s Mountain in Sligo. King’s Mountain is so striking and well worth a look! The area is often referred to as ‘Yeat’s Country’ as it is the resting place of WB Yeats! He is said to have spent a lot of time here. King’s Mountain is also famous in Irish mythology. It is said to be the dwelling of the Fianna Warriors in the 3rd Century. If you enjoy hillwalking, this trail is for you! Make sure to take a look at our gorgeous Wool Caps for the walk! Wild Atlantic Way, West Coast of Ireland. Over 1,500 Miles! Approx, 2 Weeks Cycling

This is the big one! If you’re feeling very adventurous then the Wild Atlantic Way is for you! Mind you, it’s probably better to cycle than walk unless you have a LOT of time! Haha! The route is absolutely stunning and takes you from the very top of Donegal, the whole way down the Atlantic coast to Cork stopping along at all of the best sightseeing spots and lovely wee towns along the way! It’s a great way to see the country intimately and get to know some great people along the way! You’ll see the Cliffs of Moher, Skelligs Point, the Old Head of Kinsale and so much more! Let’s take a trip back across the Atlantic and look at some of the best American Trails!

The Grand Canyon North Rim, Arizona, USA

Of course, there couldn’t be a list of amazing American trails without mentioning the Grand Canyon. The Rim Trails are over 200 miles long but can be broken up into much smaller sections! Be warned though, there are no easy ways in or out of the canyon so make sure you’re not biting off more than you can chew! Hundreds of people are rescued from the area every year so make sure you plan your journey well and bring plenty of refillable water bottles! Having said that, there is no place like the Grand Canyon on planet Earth - the scenery and views are breathtaking and will be something to treasure forever! If you’re planning on taking on one of the Grand Canyon trails, make sure you have good hiking boots! Consider pairing them with our lovely Wool Socks that are made in Co.Donegal! Zion National Park, Utah, USA

Many people match up their Grand Canyon trails with the Zion National Park in Utah. The area is so magnificently scenic & unlike anything else in the world! There are so many things to see and do! The National Park has a range of hikes from those that are paved and can be navigated by wheelchair to those that are very difficult, uneven and require a full day of hard work! Many Glaciers Area, Montana, USA

This area is absolutely stunning and perfect for a hike or even a kayak if you’re feeling up to it!There are many great trails, active glaciers and beautiful lakes to see on your trip. You can expect to see all of this and even some bighorn sheep and bears if you’re lucky! But remember, all wildlife can be dangerous so keep your distance and don’t feed any animals! Irish Scarves & My Favourite Ways to Wear Them!

There are so many creative ways to wear your favourite scarves and I’m here to show you some of my favourites! You can use the above chart as a reference for some of the designs to come! (Oh, and by the way - see a scarf you like? Click on the image! It’ll take you straight to the product page!)

Well, not to state the obvious, but the first style is by far the most simple (Haha!) but also a definite classic! Simply through the scarf over your shoulders and call it a day! This style is called ‘The Drape’. Here are a few of my favourite Irish made scarves demonstrating ‘The Drape’! (Left: 100% Lambswool Irish Scarf! Was $39.95 NOW $24.95!! Keeping it simple, we’ll move on to the next style! We all know how to wrap a scarf around our necks - this is called ‘The Parisian’. You can see it below in some of our beautiful Irish scarfs! Another classic involves folding your scarf in half, creating a loop and then simply pulling the end through. This is called the ‘Pull Through’! You can see these below in our new luxury pure linen scarves! They are over 8ft long - perfect for many of the styles to come!! (Left to Right: NEW Luxury Pure Linen Irish-Made Scarves $74.95)

Now we’ll move onto some of the lesser known ways of tying your scarf!This one is called ‘The Pretzel’! Simply create a loop around your neck (basically making ‘The Snowman’) but make sure the loop is long enough. The loop should be the same length as the two ends that hang down on either side. Then simply twist the loop in half and bring on end of the scarf OVER and through the loop, and the other end goes UNDER and through the loop. Then simply tighten! Here is a diagram to help!

Now, the beauty of having a big scarf is that there are endless ways to wear them! Going to an event? Or simply feeling a chill in the air? Your scarf can now double as a wrap or stole! Similar to ‘The Blanket is ‘The Poncho’. This look consists of loosely draping the scarf around your shoulders and arms! This is a look I often go for when it’s hot outside but I’d like to cover my shoulders and arms from the heat! Or when I’m at an event in the cold, and I’d like to keep my arms and shoulders warm while showing off my outfit! This beautiful Lambswool Blend scarf is ideal for this look! When tying a neck scarf, there are a few different ways to do it! One of the simplest ways is to fold the scarf diagonally creating a triangle and tying the two ends behind your neck! You can see this below with our Irish Silk Book of Kells Scarf. Alternatively, you could fold the scarf in half and then over itself continuously until it becomes a long strip. Then wrap the scarf around your neck twice and then tie into a knot on the side and fluff out the ends as shown below! This style also works with this lovely scarf!
