Giving Hearts Day was held February 14 in North Dakota and shattered the previous 24-hour fundraising record, with $3.68 million donated to 179 charities in 2013. FirstChoice Clinic raised $249,162, YWCA raised $241,516 and Fraser Limited raised $191,342. Each organization in the top ten tier raised more than $65,000 through the Giving Hearts Day give-a-thon at www.impactgiveback.org.

Along with the recognition, grants were provided by Dakota Medical Foundation to reward these charities for their strong results.

New Life Center received an award for its first-year success in engaging donors, and 18 charities were recognized for raising at least $20,000 and increasing donations 25 percent or more: Anne Carlsen Center, CHARISM, Churches United for the Homeless, Elks Camp Grassick, Family HealthCare, FirstChoice Clinic, Great Plains Food Bank, Humane Society of Fargo-Moorhead, John Paul II Catholic Schools, Lutheran Social Services of North Dakota, Make-A-Wish of North Dakota, PULSE Outreach, Rape and Abuse Crisis Center, St. Gerard’s Community Nursing Home, TNT Kid’s Fitness, YMCA of Cass and Clay Counties and YWCA Cass Clay.

VISIONBank recognized the Anne Carlsen Center for its video that received the top votes in the bank’s Facebook contest, with second place to CCRI and third to TNT Kid’s Fitness. The Humane Society was also recognized for its promotional video.

Plains Art Museum, Theater B and F-M Opera were recognized for jointly promoting donations to the arts on Giving Hearts Day.

Nearly 17,000 individual donations were made online at impactgiveback.org on Giving Hearts Day. The online fundraising day has been organized and promoted by DMF and Impact Foundation annually since 2008 in eastern North Dakota and western Minnesota. The foundations expanded the fundraising event to Bismarck organizations in 2012, and five Minot charities joined in 2013. Bush Foundation of St. Paul provided Impact Foundation with a $25,000 grant for use in training, promotions and incentive grants to expand Giving Hearts Day to western North Dakota.

The Alex Stern Family Foundation recognized TNT Kid’s Fitness with the Eternal Flame Award for its innovation and growth in serving children of all abilities in our community with a $535 grant representing gifts to the Stern Foundation on Giving Hearts Day.

“We are very pleased that generous people of our area supported the work of charity organizations in our region. These charities have built strong relationships with their donors. The opportunity of Giving Hearts Day creates even greater awareness and engagement in their missions. We know that community excitement and spirit around giving on this day will continue to grow,” said Pat Traynor, president of Dakota Medical and Impact Foundations.

According to a study unveiled on November 7, 2011, by Impact and Dakota Medical Foundations, North Dakota households will transfer hundreds of billions of dollars over the next 50 years. The report Endless Possibilities on the Prairie: Unleashing North Dakota’s Potential is authored by John Havens and Paul Schervish from the Boston College Center on Wealth and Philanthropy. The landmark study includes county wealth transfer breakdowns and was released at an event held in Fargo with nonprofits, donors, volunteers, attorneys, CPAs, and local, state and federal government representatives.

“The ‘Endless Possibilities’ theme aptly describes how the generational transfer of wealth through 2061 presents unprecedented opportunities to create a spectacular future for the people of North Dakota and beyond,” said Pat Traynor, Executive Director of Impact and Dakota Medical Foundations. “None of these ‘possibilities’ will become a reality unless we inspire donors, charities, entrepreneurs, tax and legal professionals, and others involved to implement bold strategies to create a brighter future and superior quality of life for all North Dakotans.”

The study can be viewed at http://www.impactgiveback.org/store, and was made possible by the generous support of Dakota Medical and Alex Stern Family Foundations and SEI Investments.

On February 10, 2011, Dakota Medical Foundation (DMF) will hold the 4th annual Giving Hearts Day. For one day only, DMF will match online contributions of $10 or more made online to benefit any of the qualifying nonprofits. The selection process for participants is competitive as there are more organizations eligible to participate than funding available.

Giving Hearts Day is an innovative, online fundraising program made possible through a partnership between Impact, Dakota Medical Foundation (DMF), nonprofits trained through the Impact Institute and other community donors. This 24 hour fundraising event reinforces the Institute’s High Impact Fundraising Training by giving nonprofits an opportunity to use the concepts they learned to raise awareness about their organizations, identify new donors, and secure more money for their missions.

Each participant will be eligible to receive up to $4,000 in DMF match funding, and additional awards of $20,000, $15,000, $10,000, $7,500, $5,000, $3,000, and $1,500 if they are one of the top seven online fundraisers.

There will also be a friendly competition for additional incentive grants for the participants:
•A $500 incentive grant will be awarded to the GHD nonprofit that receives donations from the most ND cities.
•The donor who makes the single largest donation will be given the opportunity to select a GHD nonprofit to receive an additional $500 grant.
•The donor who contributes to the most nonprofits (i.e., one donor gives to 10 GHD nonprofits) will be given the opportunity to select a GHD nonprofit to receive an additional $500 grant.
•The GHD nonprofit that receives donations from the most donors (not dollar amount but single individual donors) will receive an additional $500 grant.
•The GHD nonprofit that receives donations from the most U.S. states will receive an additional $500 grant.
•The GHD nonprofit that uses the most creative and effective marketing strategy for GHD will receive an additional $500 grant.
