Focus Consultants appointed to project manage phase two of Trent Basin scheme

Focus Consultants has been appointed to project manage the second phase of the Trent Basin development in Nottingham.

The company was project manager, energy and sustainability advisor, and employer’s agent for phase one of the scheme, which was completed at the end of 2016 and featured 45 low energy homes, including eight apartments.

Now the company has been appointed as project manager, employer’s agent and sustainability advisor (HQM) for phase two, with work by builders Willmott Dixon now underway on the next 31 homes.

When the whole scheme is finished, the £100 million residential development will have created 500 low energy homes as part of the 250-acre Waterside Regeneration area in Nottingham beside the River Trent.

Partner at Nottingham-based Focus Consultants Keith Butler said: “The Trent Basin scheme is unique in Nottingham and a pioneer in terms of low energy living.

“As a company with specialists in low energy construction and development, Focus is very pleased to be playing key roles in this scheme. Almost all the properties built in phase one have been sold or reserved, and we are looking forward to working on phase two to bring additional low-energy, low-carbon homes onto the residential market in Nottingham.”

The second phase of 31 properties will comprise a mix of two, three and four-bedroom houses along with two-bedroom maisonettes. The first of these new homes will be ready to move into in 2019.

Trent Basin is the vision of award-winning Nottingham developer Blueprint and has high green energy credentials.

It is setting the bar for community energy schemes by installing Europe’s largest community battery (2MWh), and solar photovoltaics that will generate, store and distribute energy at a neighbourhood level, and is also launching a unique energy company for residents. Funded by Innovate UK, the pioneering energy scheme has a project team behind it which includes a large consortium headed by the University of Nottingham.

Nick Ebbs, chief executive of Blueprint, said: “We’re thrilled we’ve got the green light from the city council’s planning committee to start work on phase two and we can’t wait to see our vision come to life along this historic stretch of the River Trent.

J Tomlinson awarded £10m emh homes contract

J Tomlinson has been awarded a £10m contract to undertake repairs and maintenance services for social landlord, emh homes.

The appointment followed a comprehensive tender process, in which emh homes tenants were directly involved in the selection of the successful contractor. Several tenants involved in scrutinising the landlord’s services on behalf of all tenants were invited by emh homes Director of Property Services Adrian Cheetham to take part in the tender process.

Three companies were shortlisted and invited to meet with the tenants and representatives of emh homes. The contract was awarded to integrated building services business, J Tomlinson Limited.

The contract is worth £10m over five years, and will see J Tomlinson working alongside the emh homes internal maintenance team to deliver a responsive repairs service and vacant property refurbishments to homes in Nottinghamshire, South Derbyshire, Leicester, Loughborough and Northamptonshire. The landlord has almost 20,000 properties across the East Midlands.

The tenants were impressed with the efficient and professional way in which the discussions were handled, and were pleased that they were involved in the process at every step of the way.

From our perspective it was great to see such strong tenant involvement in the interview and questioning. Focus dives into leisure centre projects

Focus Consultants is playing a key role in improving leisure facilities in Cambridgeshire.

The company was appointed to provide construction consultancy services for the fast-track refurbishment and alteration project to Burgess Hall Events and Conference Centre in St Ives.

The centre, run by One Leisure, the in-house leisure provider for Huntingdonshire District Council, has undergone a replacement of the bar, floor and toilets as part of a wider rebranding and redevelopment programme to provide modern leisure facilities. Huntingdonshire District Council has invested more than £10 million at a number of centres, including St Ives, in the past five years to provide high quality leisure centres to meet public demand.

“The refurbishment was carried out within a challenging programme with limited access due to ongoing events,” said Focus Consultants building surveyor Chris Smith.

“The project team worked together to successfully complete in time for a planned 90s night, featuring boy band Five. Positive feedback has since been received from the public, now that the work has finished.”

Now Focus has also been appointed to provide construction consultancy for the refurbishment and alterations to the One Leisure St Neots Swimming Pool in Cambridgeshire, which is due to start shortly.

“Focus has wide experience of providing construction consultancy services in the leisure sector, and we are delighted to be playing a role in upgrading and improving facilities in Cambridgeshire,” added Chris.

The work has been handled by the Boston office of Focus, which has its headquarters in Nottingham and branches in Leicester and London.

Construction Leaders Club focuses on navigating through Brexit

Business growth organisation, the Construction Leaders Club, is running a series of workshops to help firms in the sector become ‘Brexit ready’.

The East Midlands-based group has created a framework to help businesses protect themselves and plan for growth and development beyond Brexit.

Now the Construction Leaders Club is planning to share the ideas in a series of workshops to be run in the Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire area – starting in February.

Business growth consultant Terry O’Mahony, who runs CLC, said: “Small business owners don't always have the time or resources to effectively lead and manage seismic changes in the marketplace and their business. We are heading into uncharted waters as the UK prepares to leave the European Union, and it’s vital that small and medium-sized businesses do what they can to prepare as much as possible for this.

“The team at the Construction Leaders Club has made it their mission to be on hand to help business leaders and managers navigate their way through and beyond Brexit.”

The Construction Leaders Club, which is believed to be the only business growth, leadership and management development organisation for the construction industry to be awarded the new Chartered Building Consultancy status, was founded by Terry O’Mahony four years ago. It offers networking and business growth advice - supporting businesses and individuals related to or associated with the UK construction industry.

The workshops will be run by Terry and Peter Jubb, a business development and marketing consultant who has worked within the construction sector for many years, and will be held at Risley Hall Hotel, Risley in Derbyshire, near junction 25 of the M1 – starting on 9^th February 2018.

“In just one workshop, we will be offering advice on how to re-engineer businesses, accelerate profitability, reduce exposure to commercial risk and to leveraging every opportunity open to business leaders,” explained Terry. “We welcome small business owners, senior decision makers and leaders who want to develop their business and teams.”

The first half-day workshop runs from 9am to noon, and will focus on the importance of being Brexit ready, how to understand fully your current business situation; identify and evaluate the best way forward; and create an effective plan.

As well as running development programmes and workshops, the CLC also stages monthly networking events, with the next one scheduled for Thursday 8^th February at 10am at The Grill at Twenty Five, 25 Bostock’s Lane, Long Eaton, Nottinghamshire, NG10 4EP.

Trio of promotions at BSP Consulting

Three members of the team at civil and structural engineering firm BSP Consulting have been promoted to new positions.

Chartered civil engineer Carol Ell and chartered structural engineer Monika Anszperger have become associates, while associate Tim Wilson has stepped up to associate director.

Carol, who works in BSP’s Leicester office in De Montfort Street, joined the company in July 2004, while Monika, who is based in the Derby office at Pride Park, joined in January 2014.

Tim, who has been with BSP since 2005, heads up the civil engineering team in Leicester.

J Tomlinson completes £6 million training hub for Volvo Car UK

The construction team at J Tomlinson Ltd has completed a brand new, state-of-the-art training hub for premium car brand Volvo Car UK.

The £6m project also included the creation of 154 extra parking spaces for the multinational vehicle manufacturing company, at its site in Daventry, Northamptonshire.

The original centre, which had been delivering training to Volvo employees since 1980, had comprised two medium-sized facilities. However, after 36 years – a period which has seen Volvo’s own brand evolution, as well as technological advancements and the continuous development of training techniques and methods - the company no longer considered its original facility to be in line with its considerable growth and objectives.

Following a collaborative working relationship with Volvo, J Tomlinson has now handed over the new Training and Development Centre, equipped with modernised facilities including remote video and web-based technologies, stylish training rooms and an electric car charging area.

J Tomlinson worked closely with the brand to ensure all finishes were implemented in line with the Volvo Retail Experience (VRE) – Volvo’s corporate identity that focuses on creating inspiring spaces that are ‘cool on the outside, warm on the inside’. Some elements of the VRE within the new building include large exterior and interior glazing (promoting the brand’s transparent and open nature), a cosy cake and refreshments area, and a vibrant lounge complete with Scandinavian-designed furniture, which seeks to aid relaxation for all staff and visitors.

Derbyshire farm shop Croots boosts its parking facilities to cater for demand

Popular Derbyshire farm shop Croots has doubled the size of its car park to cater for increasing numbers of customers.

As it gears up for Christmas and its busiest time of the year, the farm shop near Duffield has opened a second car park to create additional spaces.

The new hardstanding area has effectively doubled the number of car parking spaces at the farm shop in Wirksworth Road to around 56.

“Croots Farm Shop & Café has become a popular destination for shoppers and diners, and we wanted to make sure that our visitors could park – whether they were coming to shop, visit our café for coffee, lunch or afternoon tea, or to use our children’s play area,” said Steve Croot, who runs the shop with wife Kay Croot.

“We’re situated at the end of a 500m drive and many of our visitors come by car, so this will make it easier for customers to find a space, especially as we are now heading towards our busiest time of the year when we expect a lot of visitors to the Christmas events we have planned, as well as those coming to do their shopping or join us in the café.”

The new car park is near the top of the drive, just a few metres away from Croots Farm Shop & Café.

Croots, which opened in June 2008, is an award-winning family run farm shop – well known for its wide array of quality food and drink, homemade produce and gifts. It has an extensive butchery counter and a well-stocked cheese display, making it a big favourite for foodie fans in Derbyshire.

It also sells a range of bakes created exclusively for Croots by Great British Bake Off contestant Val Stones who is the sister of Steve Croot.

Earlier this year, Croots Farm Shop won the People’s Choice in the Midlands Award in the Family United Business Awards.

“We’ve expanded the shop and the café since we opened, and improved the drive, so it’s logical to also extend the car park,” added Steve. “We have additional improvements in the pipeline too, as we continue to boost our facilities and customer experience.”

Croots Farm Shop, based at Farnah House Farm, Wirksworth Road, near Duffield, is open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm (Shires Eatery until 4.30pm) and from 10am to 4pm on Sundays. Croots runs Fresh Fish Thursdays between 9am and 1pm on Thursdays.

BSP Consulting celebrates ten years in Leicester

the 10th anniversary

East Midlands-based civil and structural engineering company BSP Consulting is celebrating a decade in Leicester.

It is ten years since the firm opened a Leicester office in De Montfort Street – the third office in the group.

Since then, the award-winning company has moved to larger premises, double the size of the original, to cater for increasing demand for its services in the area.

“We opened our Leicester office in December 2007 with three staff and since then have gradually grown as we established ourselves as a key civil and structural engineering company in the city,” said Paul Elphick, BSP Consulting director, who manages the Leicester office and has been based at the De Montfort Street branch since it was launched.

“During our decade in Leicester we have increased the range of services we offer from this office to include pre-planning support and traffic and transportation engineering, and this has been one of the reasons behind the expansion of the team.

“However, as our reputation has grown, so has the number of engineers and technicians we have employed in Leicester and we currently have a team of 15 based in our city office, working across the city, county and beyond.”

During the past decade, BSP has provided civil and structural engineering services for a number of key projects in Leicester and Leicestershire, including Makers’ Yard in Leicester’s Creative Quarter, buildings at Brooksby Melton College, refurbishment schemes at Loughborough University, the new Birkett House SEN School in Wigston, and the HQ for Dunelm at Syston.

In addition, members of staff from the Leicester office have been involved in numerous developments further afield and are currently working on projects as far away as South Wales, where the firm has been appointed to work on the spectacular new multi-million-pound Afan Valley Adventure Resort, which is set over 500 acres of forests and hills and will be the first development of its kind in the UK, and home to a wealth of adrenaline-fuelled indoor and outdoor activities.

Three new appointments at Focus Consultants

Focus Consultants has welcomed three new members of staff to its professional teams.

Sana Arif joins the Energy Team as a graduate sustainability consultant and is based in the company’s Nottingham head office. Sana’s interests and qualifications lie within the energy sector, focusing on renewable technologies with specific skills in wind, solar power and hydrogen fuel cell technology.

She graduated from the University of Nottingham with a BEng (Hons) in Electrical Engineering and Renewable Energy Systems and she completed her Masters during an internship with Blueprint.

“Focus works with both the University of Nottingham and Blueprint and we are therefore especially pleased to welcome Sana to the team,” said Focus partner, Jason Redfearn. “It’s great to see Sana join Focus Consultants, at a time when our work in the energy and sustainable development sector is expanding. She brings new skills to the team and will add strength and depth as we continue to grow.”

George Jones

Also based at Nottingham is George Jones, who joins the Funding, Research and Economic Development Team. George has joined the company through the University of Nottingham’s Internship Scheme. George has strong client-facing skills and excels in communication and consultation techniques coupled with research and evaluation. He has travelled and studied widely in the UK and South America.

Evie Osbon

The third new team member is Evie Osbon who has joined the Focus London team as a graduate project manager. Evie has a background in the theatre and arts, having graduated with a BA (Hons) Acting Degree. She is the latest addition to Focus’ expanding London team and will be supporting the firm’s project managers on a range of cultural and heritage-focused projects.

J Tomlinson appointed on £7.25 million M&E student accommodation contract

J Tomlinson awarded student accommodation contract

J Tomlinson has won a £7.25 million contract to provide mechanical and electrical engineering services for a new 922-bed student accommodation scheme.

The company has been appointed by main contractor Galliford Try to undertake the M&E work on the £52.5 million development in Paradise Street, Coventry.

The new halls will be built across three blocks of three, 12 and 14 storeys on the site of a former garage close to the city centre, with an additional two low-rise house blocks. Further landscaping will also be created including a recreational area for the students, as well as office and maintenance facilities for the proposed management company AXO Student Living.

J Tomlinson has been secured to design, supply, install and commission the mechanical, electrical and plumbing services for the project by Galliford Try’s Building East Midlands business, which has been appointed by The Elite Group to develop the scheme.

Derbyshire Shire Horse Association at Croots

Derbyshire Shire Horse Association has presented £500 to the Nightingale Macmillan Unit, a specialist palliative care unit at the Royal Derby Hospital, following the group’s annual open day.

The money was raised from admission fees, raffle tickets, a tombola and sponsorship from local companies – and was handed over during a ceremony at Croots Farm Shop.

Staged at Farnah House Farm, just outside Duffield, and the home of Croots Farm Shop, the show is an annual event which attracts pedigree Shire horses from across Derbyshire, Cheshire and Staffordshire.

“We have held our annual event at Farnah House Farm for several years and plan to hold it there again on the first Sunday of next August. We are delighted to have raised £500 for the Nightingale Macmillan Unit,” said Sheila Shardlow, treasurer of the Derbyshire Shire Horse Association.

Approximately 30 Shire horses took part in the show, dressed in all their finery – attracting crowds of visitors.

Farnah House Farm is the home of Jim Yates, President of the Derbyshire Shire Horse Association, and his wife Sue, who have been breeding and rearing Shire horses for many decades. Jim is also the chairman of the executive committee of the Shire Horse Society, the only national charity that is dedicated to the protection, promotion and improvement of the Shire horse.

Their daughter Kay Croot, who runs Croots Farm Shop with her husband Steve, said: “We thoroughly enjoy hosting the annual open day run by Derbyshire Shire Horse Association, and are pleased that the event raised so much money for a local good cause.”

Focus completes project management role at Grade I listed hall

A previously inaccessible area of a Grade I listed hall is being opened to the public following a conservation project which has been managed by Focus Consultants.

The scheme at Kelmarsh Hall and Gardens in Northamptonshire - entitled ‘Tunnelling through the Past’ - has conserved the former stable yard, laundries and the servants’ areas in the basement of the house.

Thanks to a £1.3 million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and funding from Daventry District Council grant scheme, along with the charity’s own fundraising efforts, the history of the lives of the servants at the hall will now be showcased to visitors.

Nottingham-based Focus Consultants, which specialises in delivering high quality heritage projects across the UK, has been involved with the project from the end of 2015 until completion, undertaking a project management role.

Project manager at Focus Jo Hardwicke said: “The main opening of this exciting new interactive visitor experience will be on 1^st April 2018, when the hall reopens to the general public, but there will be an exclusive preview of the spaces next month as part of the National Lottery ‘Thank You’ week to lottery players, when Kelmarsh Hall holds a Christmas Fair on 17^th December.

“As a company, Focus has wide experience of conservation, restoration and other projects within the heritage sector, and we have been thrilled to have played a role in conserving and opening up these previously inaccessible areas at Kelmarsh Hall to give the public a glimpse into the history of the servants who lived behind the scenes at this wonderful hall.”

Currently just the main living spaces in the grand Grade I listed hall are open to visitors, and guided tours provide in-depth insight into the history of its famed past residents, such as designer Nancy Lancaster. But following the conservation project, undertaken by contractor Stone Edge, and after the introduction of the latest technologies, a full sensory experience of what life was like for those who formerly worked and lived at the property will be available. Tablet devices will help visitors to interpret the rooms in detail, whilst augmented reality will bring the spaces to life with period characters appearing to tell their story.

Lesley Denton, general manager for the Kelmarsh Trust said: “The conservation of the laundry and basement which are connected by a fantastically preserved tunnel has been a long road. It has been over six years from my first meeting with the HLF to the handover of the capital works by Stone Edge. The Kelmarsh Trust has been so fortunate to work with each and every one of the professionals involved, from our accountants and architects to the designers and interpretation experts. However, none of it would have been dealt with so professionally if we had not appointed Focus Consultants as our project managers. Jo and Steve have ensured we got where we are today by solving the problems, and there have been some, in a reassuring and effective manner. I cannot thank them enough.”

Experts will be sharing the latest updates on some of the key challenges facing the food and drink sector at a one-day workshop to be held at the Food Innovation Centre.

Aimed at small and medium-sized food and drink manufacturers, the event will turn the spotlight on food waste utilisation and alternative proteins – all of which are major topics currently in the sector.

The Food Innovation Centre, based at the University of Nottingham’s Sutton Bonington Campus as part of the Division of Food Sciences, is a unique collaboration project that provides free specialist innovation support to small and medium-sized food and drink manufacturers in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.

Providing top expertise and state-of-the-art equipment, the project offers access to scientists, students and facilities at the university – enabling eligible food and drink firms to seek free advice on how to overcome challenges and develop new ideas.

The latest workshop – to be held at the University of Nottingham’s Sutton Bonington campus on Tuesday 28^th November from 9am until 5pm – will focus on the opportunities and challenges of food and drink waste, plant and insect-based alternative proteins, including information about nutrition and food allergy/intolerances.

It has been designed to give food and drink manufacturers in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire an introduction to these key topics with current updates on technologies, opportunities and sourcing.

Head of the project, Richard Worrall, said: “These are huge topics, but important to us all. The Food Innovation Centre has brought together a range of experts to talk about these key global subjects, making them relevant to SMEs and with additional input through case studies from SME businesses themselves. The workshop will share the latest knowledge and information for those working in food and drink manufacturing – hopefully inspiring them to boost efficiencies, reduce waste, develop new products and improve their competitive performance.”

The Food Innovation Centre is a three-year project funded by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Stable tours staged at world’s largest gathering of Shire horses

Visitors to the world’s largest gathering of Shire horses will be able to get up close to the gentle giants of the horse world in a series of special stable tours.

The Shire Horse Society, which is staging the three-day National Shire Horse Show in March 2018 at Bingley Hall, Staffordshire Showground near Stafford, is organising the tours as part of the event.

They are designed to give visitors an insight into what’s involved in preparing and showing a champion Shire horse, as well as an understanding of this magnificent breed.

“The Shire horse has played an immense role in our history, but as a breed it is still regarded as an endangered species, with fewer than 300 pedigree Shire horse foals registered every year,” said Shire Horse Society secretary Victoria Clayton.

“The stable tours will be given by Shire horse owners, breeders and enthusiasts and will focus on everything from how to look after a Shire horse to how to prepare for a show.

“It’s a great opportunity for horse and animal lovers and those who like nostalgia to find out more about this magnificent breed, and to support the work we do, as a charity, to ensure that the Shire horse has a future.”

The show, which attracts around 250 pedigree Shires from across Europe, runs from 16^th to 18^th March, with stable tours being held on Saturday 17^th March and Sunday 18^th March.

Tickets are now on sale for the event, which is an ideal day out for all the family, featuring classes in the ring, trade stands, demonstrations and a children’s animal petting area. New for 2018 is the ridden quadrille – a choreographed ride to music which is often compared to an equestrian ballet.

Visitors will have the chance to buy tickets for the stable tours on arrival at the show on the Saturday and the Sunday.

Next year is a special one for the Shire Horse Society, as it marks the charity’s 140^th anniversary.

“This will be the third year we have held our national show – the world’s largest gathering of Shire horses – at Staffordshire Showground, and we hope that hundreds of people will join us to help with the celebrations,” added Victoria.

Adult tickets are £10 in advance or £12 on the gate, while tickets for children aged five to 13 years are £8 in advance or £10 on the gate. Children aged 14 years and over are charged at the adult price, while under fives enter free.

Gates open on Friday 16^th March at 8.30am and at 7am on Saturday 17^th and Sunday 18^th March.

Scientists and business experts working together at the Food Innovation Centre at the University of Nottingham have now helped over 100 food and drink businesses to tackle some of their innovation challenges or create inventive new products.

Support for the SMEs has ranged from advice on how to develop new products, scale up, use new ingredients, improve nutritional profiles and make processes more efficient. It has helped firms to bring to life pioneering new products to take advantage of some of the latest consumer trends and demands.

The Food Innovation Centre, based at the University of Nottingham’s Sutton Bonington Campus as part of the Division of Food Sciences, is a unique, funded academic/commercial collaboration that provides free specialist innovation support to small and medium-sized food and drink companies in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.

Providing top academic expertise and state-of-the-art equipment, the project offers access to scientists, technicians, and facilities at the university – enabling food and drink manufacturers, ranging from brewers to bakers to chocolate makers, to seek free advice on how to overcome challenges and develop new ideas.

Head of the project, Richard Worrall, said: “We are pleased to have so far helped over 100 food and drink SMEs in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire with innovative solutions to support their development – whether it’s been through our own project team of scientists, or by accessing academic knowledge, the University’s facilities or by linking businesses to students within student projects. We also link to other economic development initiatives in the area."

“The firms have ranged from small start-ups to well-established medium-sized businesses. The Food Innovation Centre is fast becoming the place for food and drink firms in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire to go to, if they are seeking skilled expertise for their innovation challenges. We are giving SMEs access to the University’s superb facilities and knowledge, previously only available to larger businesses. We are now looking forward to hearing from additional eligible firms over the coming months so that we can also help them tackle the issues they have. It is the perfect way for Universities to engage with SME businesses as the figures show!”

A number of the firms who have received support have gone on to partner final year undergraduate and masters students at the University of Nottingham to develop the work further – providing both valuable ‘real-life’ experience for the students and giving the businesses the benefits of the latest knowledge, thinking and facilities.

These include:

Butchers JT Beedham & Sons, in Sherwood, Nottingham, who were supported in the development of a healthier sausage, made from premium ingredients, and with the correct flavour and texture. Butcher Johnny Pusztai said: “The business will be able to promote itself as a more healthy meat producer based upon the latest University research and student input.”
Dancing Duck Brewery, in Derby, who were supported with innovative ways of demonstrating the flavour differences within the company’s range of beers through the use of sensory profiling techniques. This concluded that new star diagrams (ranking descriptive analysis) would allow the beer range to be profiled and described in a more consumer-friendly format. Rachel Matthews, from Dancing Duck Holdings, said: “The business will be able to offer a new way of describing its beer product on the label to its consumers, based upon a formal Sensory Science process, to give it marketing advantage.”

RSPCA Abbey Street receives a generous donation from J Tomlinson

Integrated building services company, J Tomlinson, has recently donated £500 to a Derby-based animal shelter.

Each year, the company invites internal sponsorship proposals, giving employees a chance to secure sponsorship for causes that are close to their hearts. This year, one of the chosen causes was the RSPCA Abbey Street Rehoming Centre.

Situated within Derby city centre, the Abbey Street shelter is one of 17 regional animal centres that the RSPCA runs across England and Wales. Staff and volunteers work tirelessly to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome animals across the district that have been victims of neglect and/or abuse. Depending on each animal’s unique situation, the process can include veterinary checks, veterinary treatment, providing insurance, spaying/neutering, hand-rearing and rehabilitation – all of which incurs a considerable cost.

Most of the animals that are brought to the centre have been rescued from neglectful/cruel conditions by national RSPCA inspectors; however, many are simply abandoned on the centre’s doorstep.

The centre is independently funded and as such depends on the generosity of the public and local businesses to continue its invaluable work. From maintenance bills and veterinary costs to the provision of specialist food and employee training, the centre costs a staggering £9,000 per week to run, with every single donation making a huge difference.

J Tomlinson will be sponsoring the ‘ASH’ kennel, which is currently home to Husky cross, Willow (pictured) and Patterdale cross, Oscar – both of whom have recently found new homes.

Steel frames have gone up on a £1.6m commercial development project being built by J Tomlinson.

The Nottingham-based company has been appointed by St. Modwen to build the nine commercial units as part of St. Modwen’s £150m Littlecombe Business Park in Dursley, Gloucestershire.

The new units, developed speculatively in partnership with St. Modwen and Stroud District Council, will offer occupiers 18,350 sq ft of additional business space in accommodation sizes ranging from 1,300 sq ft to 8,600 sq ft and will sit alongside the eight businesses already established at the Business Park.

When completed, the entire Littlecombe development will provide 92 acres of mixed-use facilities featuring 450 new homes and apartments; employment space and local job opportunities within easy reach of the M5; a community hospital and around 40 acres of green open space where people can live, work and relax for generations to come.

Specialist baker Butt Foods has gained a contract to supply its tasty innovative sourdough naans to independent coffee shop chain SOHO Coffee Co.

The ethical coffee shop company, which has 40 branches, has created a range of delicious applications for the four-inch Baked Earth sourdough naans, which have just been unveiled on the group’s new Autumn menu.

Handmade in SOHO’s own kitchens using the Baked Earth naans, the menu items include chicken fajita naan, chickpea masala and paneer naan, and pulled pork and red pickles naan.

Nottingham-based Butt Foods launched the sourdough naans earlier this year in response to trends for premium and new wave Indian food dining experiences. Following a study of the Indian restaurant sector, the firm highlighted that the sector is moving away from traditional curries into a world of new flavours, snacks and small plates, different presentation and extended meal occasions – and created a special sourdough naan which would be just right for this exciting new trend.

The Baked Earth artisan sourdough recipe naan benefits from a live cultured sourdough with a long fermentation process to improve flavour and texture – creating a naan bread that’s bubbly, soft and suitable for a range of meal applications throughout the day and ideal for both the Indian restaurant world and the foodservice sector in general, with its current demand for street food-style dishes.

The company, which has been baking naan breads for more than 25 years and also produces a range of other breads, commissioned celebrity chef and former BBC Food Personality of the Year Cyrus Todiwala OBE to develop a number of uses for the naans to illustrate the flexibility of the flat breads.

He created a range of innovative dishes for all times of the day – from breakfast and brunch through to tapas small plate dishes - for the sourdough naans.

Christmas events announced for Croots Farm Shop in Derbyshire

Derbyshire-based farm shop Croots has unveiled a Christmas cracker of events leading up to the festive period.

Throughout November and December, Croots Farm Shop near Duffield is set to host a number of festive events, kicking off on Thursday 9^th November with a Taste of Christmas Event. This will be the perfect chance to preview Croots new Christmas range with the opportunity to enjoy mulled wine and mince pies, and to sample the wares of local suppliers.

Singer Neil White will be providing entertainment by singing seasonal songs.

Running from 5.30pm to 8.00pm, the event is free to attend and visitors will be treated to 10% off their shopping.

Festivities continue throughout December with the Holly Jolly Breakfast or Tea with Santa – held on a range of dates. For just £13.50, children can spend time with elves, enjoy festive gingerbread making and a chance to meet Santa and receive a gift. Further details and dates are on the Croots website. Looking to once again bring festive cheer to the Derbyshire Children’s Holiday Centre, the farm shop will be stocking reindeer food in the run up to Christmas. All proceeds from the sale of the reindeer food will be donated to the charity, which has been supported by Croots Farm Shop for several years.

A Christmas hamper raffle will also be staged in aid of the charity, which was established in 1891 to provide Derbyshire children having troubles in their home lives with a holiday in Skegness, Lincolnshire. It currently provides 660 holiday places per season.

Croots, which is based at Farnah House Farm, Wirksworth Road, is open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm (Shires Eatery until 4.30pm) and from 10am to 4pm on Sundays. Croots runs Fresh Fish Thursdays between 9am and 1pm on Thursdays.

World’s largest gathering of Shire horses returns to Staffordshire for third year

The organisers of the world’s largest gathering of Shire horses have announced that the show will once again be staged in Staffordshire.

The 2018 National Shire Horse Show will be held at Staffordshire Showground from 16^th to 18^th March – and is expected to attract more than 250 pedigree Shire horses.

Organised by the Shire Horse Society, which will be celebrating its 140^th anniversary in 2018, the event is a great day out for fans of the magnificent gentle giants of the horse world.

Visitors can watch the iconic breed being put through its paces in-hand, ridden and in harness – with the chance to find out more about Shire horses and their role throughout history.

New for 2018 is the ridden quadrille – a choreographed ride to music which is often compared to an equestrian ballet.

“This will be the third year that we have held the National Shire Horse Show at Staffordshire Showground and we look forward to welcoming visitors and competitors to the event, which is regarded as the largest gathering of Shires anywhere in the world,” said Shire Horse Society secretary Victoria Clayton.

“The show has been held at a limited number of venues in England over its long history, and is believed to be one of the oldest, almost continuous, horse shows in the world, having been held for the first time at the Royal Agricultural Hall in Islington, London, in 1880, when the charity was named the English Cart Horse Society.

“Next year is a special one for us as a charity because it marks our 140^th anniversary, and we hope that hundreds of spectators will join us in Staffordshire to celebrate, along with our members who do such a great job of preserving this wonderful breed, which is still regarded as endangered and needs our continuing support.”

Trade stand opportunities are available for traders who would like to have stalls at the event, which attracts thousands of competitors and spectators over three days of competition. A range of sponsorship opportunities is also available.

The iconic Shire breed was in danger of dying out just a few decades ago, and even now fewer than 500 new foals are registered every year by the Shire Horse Society. The charity has been running a Save Our Shires campaign to raise awareness about these gentle giants and numbers have steadily increased, thanks to the dedication of a band of enthusiasts.

Tickets for the 2018 show have remained at 2017 prices and have just gone on sale via the Shire Horse Society’s website www.shire-horse.org.uk

Adult tickets are £10 in advance or £12 on the gate, while tickets for children aged five to 13 years are £8 in advance or £10 on the gate are £10. Children aged 14 years and over are charged at the adult price, while under fives enter free.

Gates open on Friday 16^th March at 8.30am and at 7am on Saturday 17^th and Sunday 18^th March.
