Steve Tchozeski, of Great Lakes GeoScience, came to Bath Elementary today and taught third graders all about geodes. Geodes are found in limestone. Once the geode is broken open, you can see beautiful quartz on the inside. Be sure to ask you child what they learned today and check out their geode!

Tuesday is Field Day 2016

Thank you to Mr. Dilday for volunteering to provide balloons for Field Day!
We have a family that has been displaced from their home due to a fire. They have two children that attend our school and one that will be in kindergarten next year. Many families have asked how they can help. If you would like to help please consider donating a gift card. You can send in your donation to the classroom or the office. Some ideas would be Meijer, Kroger, Walmart, Target, Kohls. . . . If you are choosing to help, please send your donation to the school by Monday, June 6, 2016. Thank you for helping!
Mr. Saylor has asked that each classroom wear the same color of shirt on field day, June 7th. Our shirt color is purple (ABNL t-shirt will be perfect!). He also has asked for a parent to fill water balloons for the sling shot station. Each class will need around 75 balloons for the event. They need to be delivered to the back of the elementary school before school begins on Tuesday. Put the balloons in a closed container with your name and class name. A cooler works the best for storing the balloons. It is also a good idea to put some water in the bottom of the cooler prior to storing and transporting the water balloons. If you are able to fill the water balloons, please let me know. If there are no balloons, students will shoot bean bags.
The case has been made for decades that kids need to spend time outdoors. The benefits are many– exercise, play, and learning about nature. But for years, everyone from parents to doctors to nature enthusiasts have been concerned kids aren’t getting outside as much as they should be. Now there’s a growing body of scientific evidence to support their cause. Research is showing that going outdoors more often prevents obesity, reduces symptoms of ADHD, and may even stimulate learning. For this month’s Environmental Outlook: some creative ways to get kids outside and why it’s good for the environment.

Below is a link to an outdoor program for 4th grade students. As you make plans for the summer you might want to consider visiting a state or national park. What a memory to be a Junior Ranger at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
Students used pipe cleaners and pony beads to represent and help explain how the double helix works. Some prepared stew at home, donated food items and supplies, and helped at the park with preparing food and working with students. Many thanks to all who helped. It was a cool, rainy day, but still one filled with learning and good memories. Enjoy the photos from the day!

On Tuesday, March 1, Bath Elementary will host the annual Art and Literacy Night. This year the theme will center around the seven habits from the "Leader In Me". Families will be able to go to various literacy stations and participate in activities around the habits. The PTA will hold its annual Silent Auction where student art work will be auctioned off. Students in Room 210 made note cards with greetings such as "Thank You", "Get Well", and "Happy Birthday". There are three sets of cards to bid on. Something new for Third Grade this year is serving food. As a fundraiser for the Voyageur Encampment in May, the Third Grade team will provide a tasty meal for your family. For $3.00 you can get a shredded pork sandwich or hot dog, bag of chips, a dill pickle, and bottle of water. For $1.50 you can choose from an Eric Carle cupcake or a large cookie. If you would like to have a meal but need assistance, you can get a meal voucher. Please let me know or your child can let Mrs. Mulford or Mr. Louks know on Tuesday. Hope to see you at Art and Literacy Night on Tuesday, 5:30-7:00 PM!
