Citizen Brand proudly presents PennySmash, a project that hijacks the
familiar souvenir penny press to produce truly affordable works of art. For just $2.01, fans can purchase new work by Ken Lum, Jerszy Seymour, Ian Grais and Natalie Purschwitz.

Marrying conceptual art with accessible design, PennySmash is a locally produced counterpoint to the generic mementos of our time. When you buy a PennySmash penny you not only receive a unique piece of artwork by a celebrated artist or designer, you also take part in the production process. Equal parts art piece, souvenir and experience, PennySmash is anindelible reminder of where you were and when.

The first PennySmash machine was launched in Toronto, and was recently added to the permanent collection of the Design Exchange. Full sets of pennies from all machines are available at pennysmash.ca. PennySmash Vancouver is a collaborative project created by Todd Falkowsky, with Scott Hawthorn, Bob Kronbauer, Tyler Quarles and Adrian McInnes.

Money generated from the project will go to local charity and an arts/culture grant. At the end of the year those involved in the project will have a dinner party and decide which Vancouver project will receive a cash gift so they can add to the cultural scene in our city.

Salt is proud to host PennySmash and encourages you to create your own work of art next time you visit us.

Nestled near the corner of West Hastings and Carrall at 16 West Hastings Street, the Bitter Tasting Room balances industrial chic with warm pub-style informality. Bare brick walls, exposed beer kegs and open kitchen sit well with the simple but comfy furniture and the whole place doesn’t make you feel like you’ll need to stand on ceremony.

A quick glance over the menu and I feel like I’m back in London; pickled eggs, pork scratchings, beer nuts, and a host of other pub favorites are on offer. But Bitter is offering something beyond standard pub-grub; these are handmade, organic, high quality versions of pub favorites. Scotch eggs are a staple back home but I have to admit the one’s from Bitter are better than anything I’ve had in the UK; crispy and golden brown on the outside and the sausage meat is packed with flavor. The biggest surprise though are the pork scratchings. I imagined a coronary-waiting-to-happen in a sealed foil bag hanging on a hook behind the bar. These are light, chewy, without a hint of grease and dusted with just enough Cayenne Pepper to give them a kick. The closest I can think to compare are shrimp crackers in terms of texture, but the flavor is completely different.

The sausages can also come highly recommended – the Weisswurst we tried was a new one for me. When it arrives at our table our server explains how we remove the skin ourselves; this is hands on food and as I look around the room most of the guests have abandoned cutlery a few mouthfuls in. The Weistwurst is delicious – lightly spiced, soft with an almost pate texture – and it goes brilliantly with Bitter’s home-made sweet honey mustard.
The team at Salt welcomes you to the Cellar Series where we will pair Spanish cheeses to Spanish wine and Italian charcuterie to Italian wine, complete with matching condiments, as well as fresh bread and crackers from our own Penn Bakery...a truly unique experience for all!

The featured wines for this event are:

From Spain:

Jaume Serra Cava Brut Nature. A pale yellow with shades of green, crystal clear and integrated with fine bubbles. The nose is aromatic with good intensity, fresh and fruity but with notes of aging. Well structured, smooth and balanced. Made with Parellada, Macabeo and Xarel-lo grapes.

Jorge Ordonez Selections- Botani 2010; Muscat de Alexandria. Fragrant aromas of jasmine, honey, and tropical fruits inform the nose of this nicely proportioned, intense, savoury, dry wine.

Can Blau- Kia 2009. A blend of Syrah, Garnacha and Carinena that has been aged for three months in French oak. Deep ruby red, hints of red and black fruits and spices along with soft, vanilla flavours of new oak.

From Italy:

Monte Antico IGT 2007. Bright plum, dried cherry and flowers on the nose. Full bodied, with fine tannins and refined berry and cherry flavours.

Tellus Marche IGT 2007. Ruby with purple reflections, the bouquet is elegant, reminiscent of violets, roses, raspberries and cherries; silky on the palate, distinct finesse and balance, crystal clear red fruit, the individual varietal traits gracefully compliment each other. Youthfully easy to enjoy and at the same time, shows breed and harmony.

Toscolo Chianti DOCG 2009. Brilliant ruby in colour, this forward, predominantly Sangiovese red is supple, fruity and flavourful on the palate, with appealing balance and near unlimited matchability with food.

When Sean Heather first came to Canada, vegetarian was a dirty word in his vocabulary. Coming from the farming culture of Ireland, he couldn’t understand why someone wouldn’t eat meat. While working at Benny’s Bagels, Sean encountered a massive football player who regularly ate vegetarian sandwiches two at a time. Amazed, Sean said to him, “Wow, you’re a professional athlete and you eat vegetarian? How does that work for you?” The football player replied, “I’m not a vegetarian. These just taste good, brother, you should try one.” Sean did and thought they were fantastic. That’s when he realized you don’t have to be a vegetarian to eat vegetarian food.

The thing about most restaurants is, they treat vegetarians as an after thought, not bothering to go out of their way to provide quality vegetarian and vegan options. Choices are either limited, or non-existent. In order to find GOOD vegetarian or vegan fare, you usually have to go to a restaurant that specializes in that type of cuisine. For a group of friends going out to dinner, it can be difficult to find a place that caters to one group without alienating the other.

Sean explains, “The Irish Heather’s menu has always had a good vegetarian component to it because a. it’s important to represent everybody, and b. because vegetarian food can taste just as good as everything else. I‘ve never met a vegan or a vegetarian who didn‘t like beer, and so, pubs are great venues for these folks, but if the food is not there to meet their needs, they won’t come back. More than anything else, it’s important to not just put a plate of veggies in front of someone, but to make an effort and create something special. In doing this, we’re taking their beliefs or choices seriously.”

So, if you are vegetarian or vegan, or even if you just want to try something new, come to The Irish Heather. We have a Vegan Pot Pie made in our own bakery that not only tastes and looks great, but works perfect with a pint of almost anything we have on tap.

World renowned Neal's Yard Dairy is welcomed to the Salt Cellar Series!

Usually the focus of the Cellar Series leans towards the grape as we invite winemakers from near and far to share an evening with us. This May 16th and 17th however, the focus shifts slightly as we explore the world of cheese!
The team at Salt takes it's cheese very seriously. In fact Sean Heather, co-owner of Salt visits cheese mongers both locally and around the world for the best product he can find. So when you're talking about the best, the conversation has to involve the United Kingdom's Neal's Yard Dairy. They are quite particular about what cheese they represent and who represent's them and this coming May you'll get the chance to see why.

We are privileged to have Chris George from Neal's Yard Dairy join the team at Salt in hosting this event as we pair their cheeses to fine wines, and condiments.

Unless you're planning a trip to London sometime soon, this will truly be the chance of a lifetime.

Seating is limited so book now.
There are only two wines produced from the Naramata vineyard, both made from Chardonnay: The ‘Tribute Series’ is dedicated to a Western Canadian individual of significance and the Micro Cuvee, which is just that, a wine of the very finest barrels from the vintage and extremely small production. The dedication to producing the Okanagan’s best quality chardonnay is realized with the impeccably manicured vineyard and rigorous selection of perfect fruit.

In 2008, Jak purchased a second vineyard of just 6.9 hectares, located in the Okanagan Falls area. This vineyard is planted to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Gewurztraminer. Furthermore in 2008, Jak acquired another key asset to ensure outstanding quality: Winemaker and Viticulturalist Chris Carson.
Join us as we pair Meyer’s critically acclaimed wines to the local artisanal cheeses and charcuterie you have come to expect from the team at Salt.

An Amazing Night at the Errazuriz Salt Cellar Series

Last night I had the pleasure of being invited to The Errazuriz Salt Cellar Series by Mr Sean Heather. I have to be honest, I have been to many wine and food pairing dinners and have found them mostly boring and drawn out. Usually I can't wait for the talk to be over so I can get down to the eating and the drinking.

Well my internet friends, this was not one of those experiences. The chat was light and concise and our hosts, Restaurant Managers Chad Gaskell & Mike Mitchell and Errazuriz North American Regional Director Rodrigo Rodero got to the point quickly. Only taste profiles and a brief discussion about Chilean growing climates were shared. I really got the feeling that our hosts really wanted us to ENJOY our experience the best way possible... with our taste buds.

Now I have to say the organic wines, the carefully chosen cheeses & meats and the hand made preserves spoke for themselves, what really got me was the truly social nature of sharing this experience with friends and strangers alike at Salt's cellar long table. By the end of the evening I had made 4 new friends.

Peter, Karen, Llyod and Catherine, I look forward to breaking bread with you again at the next Salt Cellar Series hosted by Meyer Family Vineyards.

by Charles Zuckermann There are only two wines produced from the Naramata vineyard, both made from Chardonnay: The ‘Tribute Series’ is dedicated to a Western Canadian individual of significance and the Micro Cuvee, which is just that, a wine of the very finest barrels from the vintage and extremely small production.

The Salt Cellar Series: Errazuriz

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011 7:00 p.m - $40 (+ tax and gratuity)

Viña Errázuriz was founded in 1870 in the Aconcagua Valley, and since then has been committed to the concept of terroir.
