The sound should be music to my ears, given that our organization,Centro San Antonio, is one whose mission in part is to advocate for and catalyze downtown development.

Instead, I can’t help but feel that the “music” emanating from this particular project is off; like a symphony soloist playing in a different key than the rest of the musicians. No matter how much you try to tune out the soloist, you can’t hear anything else.

As the San Antonio River passes under Loop 1604 in south Bexar County, it becomes a different kind of river.

It's no longer a tourist attraction sitting between cement walls. Nor is it the sculpted backdrop of a park.

Here it's as close as it will ever get to being a wild river.

Come January, the San Antonio River Authority is inviting the public

All major U.S. cities, and many minor ones, have at least one
downtown post office. Part of what makes any downtown area a vital place
to work, shop and even live is a post office where businesses and
individuals can send and receive mail.

If the U.S. Postal Service
has its way, however, San Antonio will be a glaring exception to this
rule. The Postal Service has placed the downtown post office in the
historic Hipolito F. Garcia Federal Building on Alamo Plaza on its list of sites to be considered for closure.

1920's Fill Station on S. On Tuesday, VIA Metropolitan Transit adopted a master plan that proposes a multitude of new transit projects that could turn this bus-only transit agency into one that provides streetcar and light-rail service in the coming decades. Board members unanimously approved the plan at their monthly meeting. In the past four months, through a partnership called Uptown Interests Inc., McManus has purchased four properties in or near downtown with the intention of adding quality commercial space, and maybe even residential, to the center city. Austin-based developer Dennis McDaniel bought the 73,000-square-foot building in 2006 with the idea of creating condos and townhomes. But the collapse of the economy and the real estate market put that plan on the back burner and the plan then morphed into rental units.

The developers recently closed on a Housing and Urban Development loan, which allowed them to finally start the project.

The lofts are set to open next summer. While
the economic downturn has brought a slowdown in residential and
commercial development in the city center, there are still new projects
popping up to accommodate more people interested in urban living and
working. The 2010 Community Development Summit at the Convention

livability. The city and the San Antonio chapter of the Urban Land
Institute co-sponsored the “Transforming the Center City through

spoke during 16 sessions and workshops that covered topics including
cybersecurity in San Antonio and the bicycle master plan. Speakers also
touched on energy issues, affordable downtown housing and the city's

In the past year, the San Antonio City Council has required lights and signs to keep cyclists safe, started a bike share program, made improvements to bike lane infrastructure a priority, designated a near-downtown bridge as open to pedestrians and cyclists only, and most importantly, approved a safe-passing ordinance. This year has also seen the installation of more bike racks downtown, a bicycle summit, downtown bike and trike tours and the beginning of a comprehensive biking habits study. while it's one of his key center-city development goals, others say
it's too early to make economic sense, as a grocery operator would have
to open in the red and hope that an urban residential boom would follow. “Perhaps
