An environmentalist will go on a hunger strike over the construction of court officials’ residences at the foot of Chiang Mai’s Doi Suthep mountain.

Nikom Putta, who heads the Mae Ping River Conservation Group, said on Wednesday that court officials should not use houses and condo buildings that were built on the controversial site.

“Let these buildings stand as monuments to the mistakes,”

he said.

He said he would stage a hunger strike and pray so as to encourage all sides to talk, admit that mistakes have occurred, and embrace a peaceful solution.

Nikom spoke up after Chamnan Rawiwanpong, who previously headed the Court of Appeals Region 5 and now heads the Supreme Court’s Bankruptcy Division, suggested amid the stand-off that court officials should be allowed to use these structures for 10 years.

Built at a budget of nearly Bt1 billion, the residences for court officials are now going up at the foot of Doi Suthep mountain. Environmentalists believe 45 houses and nine condo buildings – whose constructions are almost completed – have encroached on forestland.

The construction site, authorities have insisted, sits not in the forest zone but just next to the Doi Suthep-Pui National Park.

Nikom said while the courts might say the constructions were legal, they were not being fair.

“How can the court clear forestland for its officials’ residences while people are prosecuted for encroachment?”

he said.

He said one should not accept what was maybe legal but unethical.

CHON BURI: Eleven men and 14 women of various nationalities were rounded up late on Saturday night in a raid on a hotel in South Pattaya in tambon Nong Prue while attending a swingers' party where revellers swap partners for sex.

The raid on Ban Tulip Hotel in Phra Tamnak area in South Pattaya, which took place at about 11.30pm, was carried out by Bang Lamung district administrative officials with support from tourist police and soldiers from the 14th Military Circle

Naris Niramaiwong, the Bang Lamung district chief, said

The raid was prompted by complaints from residents that the hotel had organised swingers' parties.

The party was being held in a room on the hotel's ground floor where 25 people were found naked, having sex. They included American, Canadian, Chinese, Malaysian, Singapore, German, Thai, Cambodian, Indian and Ukrainian nationals. They were detained for further legal action.

Mr Naris said people wanting to go to the party had to sign up via a website. The admission fee was 1,500 baht per person.

Hotel operator Yang Xeng-chai, 53, a Chinese national, was arrested for violating the Hotels Act and illegally facilitating sexual activities.

Washington DC (CNN) A touching photograph of several generations of presidents paying tribute to the late Barbara Bush is being warmly and widely circulated on social media.

The remarkable photo features four former presidents -- Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and George H. W. Bush -- along with first lady Melania Trump and former first ladies Michelle Obama, Laura Bush and Hillary Clinton.

The photo, taken Saturday by Paul Morse, a former White House photographer for George W. Bush, was initially tweeted by Jim McGrath, the spokesperson for George H. W. Bush in his post-White House years.

President Donald Trump is notably absent from the photo, as he did not attend the funeral in Houston on Saturday. The White House released a statement saying he decided not to attend the funeral in order "to avoid disruptions due to added security, and out of respect for the Bush family and friends attending the service."

The decision was not uncommon for a sitting president. Neither Obama nor the younger Bush attended the funerals of first ladies during their respective terms. Clinton did attend a graveside service for Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis in 1994.

Many were quick to praise the photo, with some commenting on the character of the former leaders -- and possibly making veiled digs at the present commander-in-chief.

David Preiss, who served in the Clinton and George W. Bush administrations as an intelligence officer, wrote, "Each president in this photo did things I disagreed with politically. Quite a lot, in fact, for most of them. And yet I never doubted that every single one of them acted based on core values, including love of country — not, primarily, love of self."

"Verne Troyer died at 49 year-old"

(CNN)Verne Troyer, who played Mini-Me in two of the Austin Powers comedy films, has died at the age of 49, according to statements posted to his social media accounts Saturday.

Troyer was 49. No cause of death was immediately released.

He was hospitalized earlier this month after emergency responders in Los Angeles went to his home, according to media reports.

"Verne was an extremely caring individual. He wanted to make everyone smile, be happy, and laugh,"

a statement posted to his social media said.

"Anybody in need, he would help to any extent possible. Verne hoped he made a positive change with the platform he had and worked towards spreading that message every day."

One child got a .22-caliber rifle from his family's home and shot the older boy in the head. He is in serious condition.

A 6-year-old boy is in the hospital in New Jersey after police say his 4-year-old neighbor shot him in the head with a rifle.
TOMS RIVER, N.J. — Authorities are deciding whether to charge anyone after police say a 6-year-old was shot in the head by a 4-year-old in New Jersey.

The older boy is in serious condition.

Authorities are still investigating how the younger child obtained the .22-caliber rifle from his family's Toms River home Monday night.

Police Chief Michael Mastronardy says the children were outside the 4-year-old's home when the boy went inside, got the rifle and shot the 6-year-old about 15 yards away. It's not clear if the 4-year-old pulled the trigger or if the rifle accidentally discharged. The parents of the 4-year-old were home at the time.

No names have been released. The shooting comes amid debate over gun control laws in the wake of the Connecticut school shooting.

Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, a towering figure in postwar British and world politics and the only woman to become British prime minister, has died at the age of 87.

She suffered a stroke Monday, her spokeswoman said. A British government source said she died at the Ritz Hotel in London.

Thatcher's funeral will be at St. Paul's Cathedral, with full military honors, followed by a private cremation, the British prime minister's office announced.

Thatcher served from 1975 to 1990 as leader of the Conservative Party. She was called the "Iron Lady" for her personal and political toughness.

(CNN) -- The youngest son of Pastor Rick Warren has committed suicide, according to a family statement released Saturday.

Matthew Warren, 27, took his life following a lifelong battle with mental illness, Warren and his wife, Kay, said in the statement.

"No words can express the anguished grief we feel right now," the statement said.
In the statement, Rick Warren said his son struggled from birth with mental illness, "dark holes of depression, and even suicidal thoughts."

"In spite of America's best doctors, meds, counselors, and prayers for healing, the torture of mental illness never subsided," he wrote. "Today, after a fund evening together with Kay and me, in a momentary wave of despair at his home, he took his own life."

As a pioneer of the megachurch movement, Warren looked to translate traditional evangelical messages for a wider audience.

Rick Warren penned "The Purpose-Driven Life," a spiritually based self-help guide that became a mainstream best-seller.

BANGKOK, Sept 5 – A senior Commerce Ministry official on Wednesday called on Thai entrepreneurs to strengthen logistics management given Thailand’s higher logistics cost compared to neighboring Malaysia and Singapore.

Anchalee Promnart, deputy director-general of the Department of Export Promotion (DEP), said that Thai businesses must be well prepared for the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in the next two years.

Thai businesses must find ways to improve the quality of logistics which will contribute to more investment and better supply chains—the major factors in exporting Thai products to the global market, she said.

Paiboon Polsuwanna, president of the Thai National Shippers’ Council, said the government has failed to integrate technology and data systems among state agencies.

He called on the public sector to improve the interconnection of the IT systems in different agencies for private sector convenience and to save time in dealing with government agencies.

Mr. Paiboon said Thailand’s capability as a production leader in Southeast Asia has been internationally recognized, especially by Japan which has praised Thailand as an ASEAN trading hub.

BANGKOK, Sept 5 – The Yingluck Shinawatra government has failed to deliver its promised crackdown on corruption, according to a poll at Bangkok's Dhurakij Pundit University (DPU)

DPU research centre director Kiat-anan Luankaew said the government’s anti-corruption performance received 4.6 of a total 10 points, describing corruption as a deep-rooted culture in Thai society, particularly in the political and public sectors.

The only anti-corruption alternative left is to strengthen the public sector, in cooperation with the media, to strenuously follow the performance of politicians and government officials while educating the public on the cancerous nature of corruption.

“Lessons learned from Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong prove that it is a curable problem if we persistently fight against it,” he said.

The survey on corruption in Thailand was conducted Aug 26-Sept 4 and announced Wednesday on the eve of National Anti-Corruption Day. A total of 1,028 people in 20 provinces were questioned in the poll.

Asked if corruption is a vital problem for Thailand, 88.3 per cent of the respondents agreed that it was serious while 7.2 per cent said it was not and 4.5 per cent said they were not sure.

In dividing graft to three categories: political, state and private sectors, 81.9 per cent, 72.5 per cent and 54.7 per cent of the respondents said corruption has increased in the political, state and private sectors.

In addition, the respondents predicted increasing corruption rates next year with 72.2 per cent, 65.5 per cent and 50.1 per cent of respondents seeing more corruption in the political, state and private sectors. (MCOT online news)

PHUKET, Sept 5 – Thailand is emerging as a more prominent halal food exporter, having earned sixth place in the global market share.

Deputy Commerce Minister Poom Sarapol said Thailand ranks 15th in the world and first in Asia as a manufacturer and exporter of halal food—food that is permissible for Muslims to eat – thanks to an abundant supply of fresh food in the country.

He was optimistic that Thailand will become world leader in exporting halal food in the future.

Current leading exporters are Australia, Brazil, Argentina, Canada, India, New Zealand, UK and US. Australia exports halal food to more than 70 countries worldwide while Brazil’s market strongholds were in the Middle East, Turkey and Europe.

Last year, Thailand exported halal food to 57 countries with a total billing of US$6.82 billion, a 43.35 per cent increase year-on-year. The export volume in the first seven months of this year was US$3.89 billion.

Mr Poom on Wednesday presided at an international seminar entitled “Phuket-Andaman-Halal for Tourism in 2012” in this southern island province with international dignitaries and diplomats including Surin Pitsuwan, ASEAN secretary general, attending. (MCOT online news)

DTAC fined 10 millions Baht for the nationwide failure of its mobile network (Thai: ดีแทคถูกปรัับ 10 ล้านบาท - สัญญาณเครือข่ายล่ม)

BANGKOK, Sept 5 - Thailand's National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) on Tuesday ordered Total Access Communication (DTAC), Thailand’s second largest mobile operator, to pay a Bt10 million fine for the latest nationwide failure of its mobile network.

The penalty against the mobile phone operator came after DTAC's fifth network collapse since late last year.

After the incident, DTAC issued a press release saying an MPLS signalling router at its switching centre in Rangsit failed to operate, affecting about 20 per cent of DTAC users in various areas for a total of 65 minutes, between 11am and 12.05 on Aug 28

NBTC secretary-general Thakorn Tanthasit said the telecom regulator informed DTAC about the fine and the company has to pay the sum within15 days or by Sept 25.

DTAC can appeal the NBTC decision within 15 days.

NBTC earlier warned DTAC against another network failure. The Telecommunications Act imposes a daily fine of Bt20,000.

Meanwhile DTAC CEO Jon Eddy Abdullah said the company would pay the fine because it was at fault.

DTAC has also prepared Bt300 million to compensate the company’s customers. (MCOT online news)

การปรับเกิดจากเครือข่ายของดีแทคจำนวน 5 แห่งล่มเมื่อปลายปีที่แล้ว

หลังจากการเกิดเหตุการณ์ดังกล่าว ดีแทค ออกมาแถลงข่าวว่าศูนย์สับเปลี่ยนเราเตอร์ัสัญญาณ MPLS ที่รังสิตล้มเหลวทำให้มีผลกระทบต่อผู้ใช้ดีแทคประมาณร้อยละ 20 ในพื้นที่ต่างๆเป็นเวลา 65 นาทีระหว่าง 11:00 ถึง 12.05 น.เมื่อ 28 ส.ค.

นายฐากร ตัณฑสิทธิ์ เลขาธิการ กสทช กล่าวว่าผู้ควบคุมระเบียบได้แจ้ง DTAC เกี่ยวกับการปรับและบริษัทจะต้องจ่ายเงินภายใน15 วันหรือภายใน 25 กันยายนนี้

ดีแทคสามารถอุทธรณ์การตัดสินของ กสทช ได้ภายใน 15 วัน

Police shot dead a drug suspect during an operation to stop the distribution of 1.5 million methamphetamine tablets onto Bangkok's streets yesterday.

The shipment could have fetched 450 million baht (approximately US$15,000,000).

Suthi Suwanyusiri, 36, sustained six gunshot wounds and succumbed just outside of the townhouse where the cache was found.

"When he saw the police, he jumped out of the house and opened fire," Pol Maj-General Suraphon Tuantong said, in his capacity as deputy chief of the National Police Office's Narcotics Suppression Bureau.

His accomplice, Sittichai Krudtiang, did not attempt to flee or resist arrest. Also present in the house were Sitthichai's wife, their child and another young relative.

"I am paid 20,000 baht each time I help him [Suthi] by driving a drug-loaded car to a destination," Sittichai said. "I've done it many times before."

Tuantong said that police had been monitoring the duo's movements for a month and it was clear they were engaged in drug trafficking.

In the early hours of yesterday morning, Suthi drove a pickup truck to the rented townhouse where Sittichai was staying. Sittichai got into the truck and headed for the Pattavikorn Market, where he got out and jumped into another vehicle that was loaded with the illicit drugs and already had its engine running.

"Sittichai then drove the Jeep back to his house and started hiding the methamphetamine tablets when we decided to move in," Suraphon said.

National Police Commissioner General Priewphan Damapong said the huge amount of methamphetamine tablets came from the north of Thailand and were about to be sold in inner Bangkok.

"Available evidence suggests that this gang is linked to drug traffickers in the Klong Toei area," he said.

Sittichai said he met Suthi at Khao Prik Prison in Nakhon Ratchasima, where they were both serving jail terms.

Corrections Department director-general Suchart Wong-ananchai reckoned that at least 200 inmates at the Nakhon Si Thammarat Prison might have been involved in drugs.

"Of them, 26 are very likely key traffickers, so we decided to transfer them to various other high-security correctional facilities," Suchart confirmed yesterday.

He added that there are about 5,000 inmates at the prison with only 160 wardens.

"We suspect some inmates may have successfully hidden mobile phones somewhere in the prison, so we have decided to use signal-jamming devices," Suchart explained.

He confirmed that he had assigned Corrections Department deputy director-general Kobkiat Kasiwiwat to draw up an efficient plan to prevent inmates, with possible aid from corrupt wardens, from engaging in illegal activities.

"We will pay close attention to the shop and medical room at the prison," Suchart said.

An investigation is ongoing to determine how many corrupt wardens have helped inmates get banned items, such as mobile phones, for use at the prison

"มีหลักฐานแสดงให้เห็นว่าแก๊งนี้เชื่อมโยงกับยาเสพติดในพื้นที่คลองเตย" เขากล่าว

สิทธิชัยกล่าวว่าเขาได้พบกับสุทธีที่เรือนจำเขาปริกในจังหวัดนครราชสีมาที่พวกเขาทั้งสองคนติดอยู่ด้วยกัน

Thai PM may discuss South with Malaysian counterpart at APEC

BANGKOK, Sept 3 - Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said Monday she will possibly raise the issue of Thailand’s southern violence during talks with her Malaysian counterpart Najib Razak at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Russia this weekend.

The Sept 7-9 APEC meeting, she said, will offer an opportunity to maintain the good relationship between the two countries in light of the escalating disturbances in Thailand’s deep South, including areas bordering Malaysia.

Ms Yingluck confirmed that the government has continued to communicate with Malaysia on the southern situation.

She added that she welcomes the opposition’s participation in solving the southern problems, adding that the government has assigned state agencies concerned to collect relevant information in the South for an in-depth assessment and operation.

The premier was apparently referring to an announcement by the leader of the Bersatu separatist group to liberate what they called the “Pattani State.”

“We have to analyse to see if our personnel and equipment are sufficient to cope with violences which have taken place inside and outside the “safety zones,” she said.

Deputy Premier Yuthasak Sasiprapa had earlier called a meeting of senior officials in charge of dealing with the southern disturbances to learn from them their needs, she said. (MCOT online news)

Red Bull Heir Suspected In Hit-And-Run on Monday - Bangkok

BANGKOK (AP) — A grandson of the creator of the Red Bull energy drink is suspected of driving the charcoal Ferrari that struck and killed a policeman and then dragged the officer's body down a Bangkok street in an early-morning, hit-and-run accident, police said Monday.

Police took Vorayuth Yoovidhya, believed to be in his late 20s, for questioning Monday after tracing oil streaks for several blocks to his family's gated estate in a wealthy neighborhood of the Thai capital.

Bangkok's top police official, Lt. Gen. Comronwit Toopgrajank, said he took charge of the investigation after a lower-ranking policeman initially tried to cover up the crime by turning in a bogus suspect. Comronwit himself led a team of officers to search the compound of late Red Bull founder Chaleo Yoovidhaya, one of Thailand's wealthiest men before he passed away this year, and confiscated a dark gray Ferrari with a dented front bumper.

The victim, Sgt. Maj. Wichean Glanprasert, 47, was killed during a pre-dawn motorcycle patrol. Thai media reported that the car dragged the officer and his motorcycle for several dozen meters (feet) as it sped through the residential neighborhood.

Comronwit said he suspended the police officer who attempted to subvert the investigation.
"A policeman is dead. I can't let this stand. If I let this case get away, I'd rather quit," he told reporters. "I don't care how powerful they are. If I can't get the actual man in this case, I will resign."

The Yoovidhaya family was ranked the 4th richest in Thailand this year by Forbes magazine, with a net worth of $5.4 billion. Red Bull creator Chaleo Yoovidhaya died in his 80s in March, leaving his heirs a wide range of businesses, including shares in the globally popular energy drink brand, hospitals and real estate.

The family also co-owns a company that is a sole authorized importer of Ferrari cars in Thailand.
