Flea and Tick Prevention:

Fleas and ticks can cause such a wide range of medical problems. Everything from Lyme Disease, to Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Haemobartonellosis, and even dangerous amounts of blood loss have been transmitted through flea and tick bites. Prevention of these bites can help keep our four legged friends from becoming ill. Pet owners can tend to forget or even brush off prevention because they do not realize it can happen anywhere at any time.

Certain areas you live or travel do carry different risks. Not all states, cities, and towns have a ridiculous amount of fleas and ticks, but it is a common myth that just because you cannot see them, does not mean they are nonexistent. Colder weather may reduce these infestations, but they have an incredible ability to survive even in burrows, under decks, in sheds and around foundations. Additionally, while outdoor animals do pose a higher risk to exposure, indoor animals can still be exposed from their human parents tracking fleas and ticks inside after walks and hikes, squeezing in those crawl spaces or even visiting your outdoor shed.

Fleas like the Ctenocephalises felis and canis, and ticks like the Brown Dog tick or Lone Star Tick have been carrying a numerous amount of diseases for centuries. Lyme disease, which causes symptoms such as high temperatures, lethargy, swollen joints, and even kidney disease, has been transmitted to both animals and humans. Haemobartonellosis, transmitted to both cats and dogs, can suppress the immune system, cause depression, weight loss, fever, and in some cases death. Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, which also effects both animals and humans, can cause anything from blood in urine and/or stool, to anorexia, and inflammation of the eyes. Prevention of these parasites are beneficial to dogs and cats, as well as their human parents.

There are several steps you can take to minimize your household risk of infestation and your furry children from becoming a host to fleas and ticks. Year around prevention through topical or oral medication can help detour from bites or even kill the parasites after trying to attach to a host. Running a flea comb after a hike or contact in a possibly infested area can also reduce the number of parasites. Closing off crawl spaces and placing screens over vents can help from them entering your home. In severe examples, you can even hire an exterminator. It is very beneficial to research your surroundings and discuss options with your local veterinary clinic to make sure you can perform the best form of prevention for your household.

Preventive Care for Reptiles:

Most of us have heard the term “preventive care” before and, most of the time, this conjures up images of routine bloodwork or blood pressure checks for ourselves or vaccination visits for our dogs and cats. But have you ever considered what preventive care means for your scaly or leathery-skinned pets? You may be thinking, “Vaccines for my (insert type of reptile friend here)? Nah.” And you’d be correct; we don’t have vaccinations for our reptilian companions. However, there’s a LOT more to preventive care than shots.

Prevention of illness in reptiles is highly affected by our husbandry, or environmental care-taking, of them. In order for them to remain healthy, we need to provide them with a living environment that is as close to what they’d have in nature as we can artificially get. It can be quite difficult to meet the lifestyle needs for your tropical Green Iguana or sub-Saharan Savannah Monitor in your Colorado living room! But as daunting as it may seem, you have to try if you want your reptile to have a lengthy, comfortable life. Individual species of reptiles, even those from the same continent or region, can have vastly differing environmental needs, so researching your species is vital. Some quality sources of information include: anapsid.org and reptilesmagazine.com. And don’t forget to consult with your veterinarian if you need some tips!

When designing your pet’s ideal environment for healthy living, the top categories to consider are: Caging, Temperature, Humidity, Diet, and UV lighting.

Caging – The stress of having a limited or inappropriate cage can result not only in reduced immune system function, but also in behavioral problems such as self trauma and aggression. Is your pet terrestrial (ground-dwelling) or arboreal (tree-dwelling)? Do they live on dry land only or do they need a swimming area in their enclosure? Do they need smooth plastic/glass sides (as snakes do to prevent abrasions on their snouts) or do they need mesh sides (as chameleons can have to ensure adequate air ventilation)?

Temperature – Most reptiles need fairly high temperatures to keep their immune systems working well so they can fight off infections on their own. It’s best to have a temperature gradient in the enclosure: cooler on one side, warmer on the other, with a hot basking spot for basking reptiles. This way, the pet can choose his own comfort level. The exact temperature ranges are going to depend on the species of reptile, so research what is ideal for your pet. The best way to ensure that you are meeting the temperature needs is to have multiple thermometers in your enclosure: one on the cool side, one on the warm, and if possible one at the basking site. Keep the thermometers at the level of the cage where your reptile spends its time. A thermometer isn’t going to give you helpful information if it’s stuck to the glass at the top of the cage right by your heat source and you have a Leopard Gecko that is never more than a couple inches off the cage floor on its rock! A word of warning: do not ever get a heating element that goes inside the cage for your reptile to lie on, like a “hot rock.” We vets have seen numerous, severe burn injuries from these. It will be much safer to use an outside-the-cage heating mat, bulb, or ceramic heat emitter.

Humidity – This is probably one of the hardest needs to meet for our more tropical species here in arid Colorado. Not having enough humidity can lead to dysecdysis, or abnormal shedding, which can result in skin infections, necrotic/dying tails, and loss of digits. Having too much humidity for our desert species can also lead to skin and respiratory infections. Know your species ideal humidity range and have a hygrometer to tell you what the humidity is in the enclosure.

Diet – One of the most common, serious illnesses that we see in reptiles is Metabolic Bone Disease. This results from vitamin D, calcium, and phosphorus imbalances and leads to brittle or soft bones, pain, fractures, loss of appetite, muscle tremors, and even death. Be sure to research the appropriate food items for your reptile and whether or not they need additional supplements to meet their requirements. Not any one supplement is going to be the correct one for all reptiles. Is your pet an herbivore, omnivore, or carnivore? Variety is also important, both to reduce stress and to meet the pet’s nutritional needs. You can’t eat only bread as your lifetime food source, and your reptile can’t eat only crickets or only romaine lettuce.

UV Lighting – Not all species of reptile need UV lighting, but many of them do. Fluorescent-style bulbs tend to be better than regular-shaped bulbs because they get better distribution along the length of the cage. UV rays dissipate the further away from the source the pet is, so they should ideally spend at least some of their time within 12 inches of the source. Sunlight coming in through a window is not sufficient! The window glass and cage siding filter out a large portion of the UV rays. The ZooMed Reptisun 10.0 is a great combo UVA/UVB source.

Whew, I know, it’s a lot to consider! But as a motivated pet owner, you can provide the best preventive care possible by doing your research and checking in with your vet to ensure a long, happy companionship for you and your reptile pal.

Why your should Spay and Neuter your pets:

Why should you spay or neuter your pet? According to a 1995 survey by the American Animal Hospital Association, nearly 80 percent of the cats and dogs in the United States and Canada are spayed or neutered.

Neutered males of all species are less likely to roam, less likely to fight, and less likely to spray urine to mark their territory. When male cats and dogs roam they are exposed to many dangers including but not limited to cars, infectious diseases, and fights with other animals. These hazards can lead to an expensive trip to the veterinarian.

The word neuter refers to the removal of the reproductive organs of either a male or a female of a species, the commonly used term for the removal of female reproductive organs is spay. The scientific terminology for neutering in the male is castration and in the female is ovariohysterectomy.

The majority of Veterinarians believe it is best to neuter either a male or female pet just before or shortly after sexual maturity. For rabbits and other pocket pets, this time could range from four to six months in the small to medium sized breeds and up to nine months in the giant breeds. For cats and dogs, it is important to wait until all of the adult teeth are in. In order to avoid common behavioral issues, it is best NOT to wait past a year of age to neuter males. Once a hormone-triggered behavior has continued long enough, you can be dealing with a firmly entrenched habit that will not fade even after neutering. Frequently, neutering helps with behavior problems, even if done much later, so don't give up on it just because you've missed the optimum time.

An un-neutered pet’s prostate gland will gradually enlarge over the course of the dog’s life due to the influence of excess testosterone in the body. With age, the prostate is likely to become uncomfortable, possibly being large enough to interfere with defecation. The prostate under the influence of testosterone is also predisposed to infection, which is almost impossible to clear up without neutering. Neutering causes the prostate to shrink into insignificance, thus preventing both prostatitis as well as the uncomfortable benign hyperplasia (enlargement) that occurs with aging.

Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC)

The Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) exists to recognize a product that meets pre-set standards of plaque and tartar prevention in dogs and cats. Approved products are awarded the VOHC Seal of Acceptance; following review of a scientific system to collect data from trials conducted according to VOHC protocols. To get an in-depth understanding on how the VOHC was established and grew into the association it is today, we will travel back to the time to when the idea was first set in motion.

A meeting on veterinary dental product endorsement was held 1991, which included presentations by representatives of AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association), ADA (American Dental Association), AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association and the US Food and Drug Administration - Center for Veterinary Medicine (FDA-CVM). The need for a system was acknowledged, with concerns expressed with regard to liability implications, and the need for credibility for up and coming pet products claiming to improve dental health for pets. The consultant panel reached a consensus to develop a product review and acceptance system. At this meeting and another held a few years later in 1995, a protocol was agreed upon for testing effectiveness of plaque and tartar build up in dogs. It wasn’t until 1998 that cats were added to the protocol. The official launch of VOHC took place during the 1997 Veterinary Dental Forum meeting in Denver. Shortly after, the VOHC testing standards were used in Canada and then became accepted worldwide. Use of the VOHC outside of the US developed first in Europe and Japan.

The VOHC awards their seal in two claim categories: the first helps control plaque, and the second helps control tartar. Two trials are conducted to ensure that the findings are honorable. Dogs or cats in both trials are to be to be of similar body weight and age. General health is to be assessed by a physical examination, chemistry panel, and urinalysis. The teeth are to be scaled and polished on day zero so that the plaque and tartar scores are zero at the start of the trail. For the duration of the trial, the dogs or cats are to be fed a control diet, either in both the product and control groups or in the control group if the product is a diet that meets AAFCO nutritional standards. The minimum trial period to record the findings is seven days for plaque and twenty-one days for tartar. Trials of longer duration are encouraged. The requirement as of January 1st, 2011 is the minimum difference required between changes in "mouth mean score" comparing the product group with the negative control group is 15% reduction in the plaque or tartar score in each trial. The Seal of Acceptance is displayed on products that have been awarded the seal. Regular use of products carrying the VOHC Seal of Acceptance means that the products have been proven to reduce the accumulation of plaque and/or tartar, which can lead to gingivitis, periodontal disease and tooth loss if not treated.

There may be commercial products available without the VOHC seal that can possibly be effective to help improve oral health but you can be sure that products that have earned the VOHC seal are truly effective and can be recommended without hesitation. With the large variety of VOHC Seal of Approval dental treats, mouth rinses, water additives, tooth pastes and diets; which are available on the VOHC website, you have the tools necessary to help improve and prevent oral diseases and overall health oral hygiene.

The benefits of using anethesia when cleaning your pet's teeth:

It is important to know the difference between anesthesia and non-anesthetic dental cleanings when you are talking with a veterinarian. The differences are crucial to the health and safety to your pet. Anesthesia free dental procedures include your pet being held down and forced to let someone scrape at the outside of their teeth to get the tartar off. This has strictly a cosmetic effect and does not treat your pet's dental disease. This process is not only scary for the patient but can cause damage to the enamel, gums, and roots. If the pet bites down on the sharp tool used to scrape the tartar off it can damage the tooth, gums, tongue or jaw. If your pets teeth are not properly scaled with a temperature sensitive scaler and polished correctly; the damage to the enamel can result in permanent damage to the teeth. The top crowns of your pet’s teeth are only the tip of the ice berg. There is double the length of the crown in roots underneath the gum line that is not visible to the naked eye. The only way to see under the gum line and asses the health of the roots is to do dental radiographs. There can be some other underlying dangers lurking under the gum lines.

With general anesthesia your pets blood work should be checked for any underlying liver or kidney problems and a complete blood count prior to being placed under general anesthesia. If there are any abnormalities with the heart rate or the sound of the heart and lungs doctors will recommend doing an echo cardiogram to determine if your pet is healthy enough to go under anesthesia. If all the diagnostics come back within normal range then your pet is safe to go under anesthesia. Certified veterinary technicians will clean and assess each one of the teeth individually and take full mouth radiographs. They use a special tool to clean under the gum line as well as polish the teeth. After the assessment process is complete the veterinarian will review the dental radiographs to check for any abnormalities or concerns with any of the teeth. Once the veterinary team get an idea of any additional treatments that are necessary they then call the owner with any the details on the dental procedures and the estimated costs of those treatments; communication is key in Client satisfaction and in getting your pet the treatment they need. The veterinary team also takes before and after pictures of the process to let owners see the results of dental cleaning visually. Along with the pictures you will be sent home with a detailed set of instructions to help keep your pet safe at home after anesthesia as well as begin or continue with home dental care.

Remember, when choosing the right veterinarian to do your pets dental procedure ask about their protocols for their dental assessment and treatment of your pets specific dental needs. Be certain that they are American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) accredited, and that they only do anesthesia dental procedures as recommend by the American Veterinary Dental College.

Why do Dental Radiograph's Matter?

When my son was three he hit his teeth (really hard) at the playground. I didn’t think much of it at first, until he started complaining “milk hurts my teeth” with little tears in his eyes. That’s when I noticed one of his front teeth starting to turn a grey color. You might be asking what this has to do with your fur baby? Like any good parent I took him to the dentist where they took radiographs (x-rays) to see what was wrong. It turns out he just “bruised” his tooth and it didn’t hurt his adult teeth, but it could have been much worse.

In the human world we go to the dentist every 6-12 mouth, and almost always the dentist will take radiographs of our teeth to make sure there is nothing wrong with your teeth under the gums surface. Pet dentistry hasn’t been around or common place for very long, and taking radiographs an even shorter time. Animals are notoriously great at hiding pain and can not say things like “water hurts my teeth”, “My tooth broke when I was chewing on that big bone”, or “It really hurts when I eat”. This is why our fur babies need to have full mouth radiographs in order to know what hurts and what may be wrong in the places we can not see.

Depending on the tooth, 70% or more is under the gum line; which means that little bits and pieces of food, toys, and anything else they put in their mouths can get stuck. This can lead to big issues that can not only affect the mouth, but their over all health. Animals can also be born with abnormalities or genetic disorders, such as teeth not erupting (never coming above the gum line). Dental radiographs replace the guess work, with a diagnostics. Studies have shown that significant pathology is missed in up to 75% of the patients without radiographs.

It is better to have any and all problems fixed when the teeth are being cleaned instead of when there is a major pain issue. If you have ever broken a tooth, had a cavity, or any dental problem you know how much it can hurt. You have the ability to say “ouch! This needs to be fixed!” With dental radiographs we can say just that for your pet.

Why are Dental Cleanings Important for Our Pets?

Pets can’t tell us when they have an infected tooth or if they are in pain because of a broken tooth. It is up to us as pet parents to get professional dental cleanings with a veterinarian at least once a year. We as humans understand why the procedure is important, and we typically do not need sedation or restraint. Neither is true for our pets. Which means that non-anestitized dental proceedures do pose a risk.

Another important difference between human and veterinary dental practice is that humans tell the dentist when there is discomfort; but to ensure that nothing is missed in dogs or cats, our patients require a thorough oral examination as part of a dental scaling procedure. Your veterinary dentist may recommend dental radiographs. Prior to any anesthesia it is important to check the pet’s lab work to check for any abnormalities with your pet’s liver and kidneys and complete blood count to ensure they are safe to go under anesthesia. In severe cases of periodontal disease the bacteria can spread into the blood stream and can cause bigger problems then bad breath. The real problem develops as plaque and calculus spread under the gum line. Bacteria in this ‘sub-gingival’ plaque set in motion a cycle of damage to the supporting tissues around the tooth, eventually leading to loss of the tooth. Bacteria under the gum line secrete toxins, which contribute to the tissue damage if untreated. These bacteria also stimulate the animal’s immune system. The initial changes cause white blood cells and inflammatory chemical signals to move into the periodontal space (between the gum or bone and the tooth). The function of the white blood cells is to destroy the bacterial invaders, but chemicals released by the overwhelmed white blood cells cause damage to the supporting tissues of the tooth. Instead of helping the problem, the patient’s own protective system actually worsens the disease when there is severe build-up of plaque and tartar. Studies in dogs have shown that periodontal disease is associated with microscopic changes in the heart, liver, and kidneys.

Dental cleanings for animals is just as important as it is for humans. Making sure you are getting the best dental care for your pet is also really important. Ask your local veterinarian if they put your pet under general anesthesia, if they scale under the gum line and if they take radiographs. These simple steps are to ensure that every tooth is being examined one by one, and there is no disease left undetected. So not only do dental cleanings help with bad breath they also help keep your pet and their internal organs healthy.

Home Dental Care of Cats and Dogs

Home oral hygiene can make a tremendous difference in your pet’s comfort and health. There are several home care oral hygiene options from which to choose, but keep in mind that anything you can do to help prevent plaque and tartar accumulation will pay big dividends. What really matters is whether or not home oral hygiene will be provided throughout your pet’s lifetime; considerable effort applied only for a short period or only occasionally will be non-beneficial. All methods of home oral hygiene share the goal of preventing or controlling periodontal disease by minimizing plaque accumulation, and preventing the mineralization of the plaque to form calculus or commonly known as tartar.

Brushing your pet’s teeth is the single most effective means to maintain oral health between professional dental examinations. Frequent brushing is recommended to maintain optimal dental health. Almost all pets will eventually accept brushing, with daily training and positive reinforcement; the key to success is to be patient and gradual in your approach. A variety of products safe for pets are available in the marketplace. The most common products are a toothbrush and specially formulated toothpaste. Toothbrushes designed for dogs are soft and angled to assist in brushing the back teeth. Toothpastes come in a variety of flavors that pet’s accept, such as poultry and seafood. Avoid human toothpastes as they often contain abrasives and high-foaming detergents that should not be swallowed or inhaled by pets. With more “not so willing pets” there are finger brushes and a variety of “dental wipes”. The single use wipes are rubbed daily on the outside of the teeth to remove plaque.

Chlorhexidine is the most effective anti-plaque antiseptic. Chlorhexidine binds to the oral tissues and tooth surfaces, and is gradually released into the oral cavity. It is safe for pets and rarely causes problems, though it does have a bitter taste. There are toothpaste, rinses and gels that contain chlorhexidine to give you a wide range of options. The rinse is applied by squirting a small amount inside the cheek on each side of the mouth. The gel is applied by smearing it onto the teeth. The tongue and lips will spread the rinse or gel around the mouth. Chlorhexidine can be applied with a gauze sponge, cotton tipped applicators, as a spray or with finger brushes.

There are some dental chews and treats on the market that are specifically designed to help control plaque and tartar buildup. Look for dental chews accepted by the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC). Blight of Bugs

I think we can all agree that this spring and summer has been especially chock-full of creeping, crawling, and buzzing bugs. How many of us have complained about the mosquitos after all the rain we’ve received? The fact is that pests and parasites are a problem all year, every year for us and our pets, but perhaps this warm and wet season has made us especially aware. It’s easy for us to douse ourselves in OFF and resist licking our feet after traipsing through the dirt, but for our four-legged friends preventing parasites is a little more difficult!

There is a multitude of products available both by prescription and over-the-counter for controlling fleas and ticks for our pets, and most often it’s advertised for dogs. However, preventing a larger spectrum of parasites is just as vital for felines, even cats that are strictly indoors. This summer has made us painfully aware of the fact that our homes are not hermetically sealed boxes that keep bugs out. How many mornings have you awoken to a new and especially itchy bug bite? Flies, mosquitos, fleas, and ticks are all able to easily gain access to our homes by hitching a ride on people and other pets, through open windows covered by screens, and through cracks and crevices that all homes have. Just by opening your patio door to sit outdoors and soak up the afternoon sun after a trying day at work creates an opportunity for them to enter your home. A single mosquito that slips in the house can infect your cat with heartworm. Microfilaria, or heartworm larvae, are especially damaging to cats’ upper respiratory systems and can cause asthma-like symptoms as they make their home in the lungs. If, by chance, a heartworm is able to mature to adulthood, a single one of these spaghetti-like worms living in your cat’s arteries can be fatal. Mosquitos also transmit West Nile Virus and malaria. After taking a blood meal, a female mosquito can go on to lay three hundred eggs which hatch in about a week’s time.

Cats that are allowed outdoors are even more at risk for picking up unwanted freeloaders with feelers. Cats have a natural prey drive and will hunt birds, rabbits, mice, and other small animals. They can easily contract fleas and intestinal parasites such as tapeworms and roundworms through direct contact with and consumption of these prey animals. Fleas carry tapeworm, tularemia, bartonellosis, bubonic plague, can cause flea allergy dermatitis, and in severe infestations cause anemia. Fleas can jump up to thirteen inches, and females can start laying eggs just six hours after feeding on your pet. Ear mites are another common parasite that plague cats and are extremely contagious. Just one cat in your home contracting ear mites can quickly lead to an infestation among all your felines.

Is your cat lazy and much prefers sunbathing in the grass to hunting expeditions? They are still at risk. Ticks lurk in grass and under trees. Moist weather has caused Colorado to experience a boom in the tick population. West Ridge Animal Hospital is working with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment by collecting ticks from our patients and submitting them for testing. The goal is to learn more about what types of ticks are moving in and what diseases ticks in our area are carrying. Common diseases carried by them include Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Lyme Disease. Check out the Center for Disease Control(CDC)’s website for long list of conditions this tiny arachnid can transmit.

Just walking across soil infected with the eggs of worms (which are basically everywhere), and then performing normal grooming activities can cause your pet to ingest the eggs or larvae of common intestinal worms. Roundworms make their home in the intestines where they feed on blood. Tapeworms also attach to intestinal walls and absorb nutrients from the food your pet passes. Hookworms have the unique ability to burrow straight through the pads of feet and the soft skin on the abdomen.

Once again my mom Kitty has been given an article about what toys cats love! Well being her name is Kitty, she isn’t a kitty LOL so as her cat Niko, it is my honor to take away her article and make it my own. That’s what cats do right? What’s mine is mine and what’s hers is mine to! Let’s begin, so as a cat we typically like to hunt prey at night. Giving us some interactive toys that keep us on our toys are great for keeping us active and lean, they way we should be! I’m going to list a few toys that I personally love and I play with on a daily basis as long as those silly mutts leave us alone. Drumroll please….

1.) The squeaky mouse toy! That toy may be annoying to some guardians but it is gods send to us! Who doesn’t like digging their claws into a toy that squeaks?! It’s almost like the real thing!

2.) Feathered wand toy! (or feathered toys in general) Oh my gosh, that thing…I ask for a new one every Christmas because I just go through them so fast! It keeps me on my toys and helps me burn off some of that energy I keep bottled during the day while I’m taking my cat naps. Burning off that energy will help us

3.) The cat tree…well you may not realize that it is a toy, but with my mom I have 7. Though all cats don’t need 7 I have the pleasure of having one in every room of the house, when my dad plays with me I run up the trees and back down, so on so forth, the scratching sensation is 110% normal for us felines. We need to scratch to keep are nails short and long and besides having a cat tree or two will help save that furniture and floor!

4.) The famous LASER POINTER! My dads favorite toy, he uses that toy when my mom is busy or at work and I want to play with someone, he loves using that toy because he gets to sit on the couch and just zoom the pointer across the room. (My mom calls him lazy but eh, I don’t care as long as I have something to do I’m great!

5.) Homemade toys! By far one of my favorites (As you can tell, I have lots of favorites) My mom has created a use for the toilet paper roll. What she does is she cuts them into strips, still in the circle form, then puts one over the other and glues them together to make a ball with slits down the sides and she uses TREATS!! She also uses old baby socks (I’m pretty sure she gets her from the store because we don’t have any human babies at my house) fills them up with cat nip and sews the end closed and whala! A cat nip toy! There are quiet a few “homemade toys” that do the trick just as well.

Now, that I told you fun toys that are great for kitties, lets talk about the ones we really shouldn’t play with due to potential health risks…I personally haven’t been allowed to play with these because they can cause issues and my mom is a very big worry wart.

1.) String, yarn, ribbon and dental floss; string is fun to play with but unfortunately we could swallow them and it could cause a foreign body and require surgery to fix

3.) Rubber bands and pony tails; although there elastic fun we could potentially swallow them

4.) Plastic bags (we could suffocate)

5.) Basically anything we could chew, small and swallow; we probably shouldn’t have them.

DIABETES MELLITUS IN THE CAT

Diabetes mellitus can affect any cat, but it most often occurs in older, obese cats. Male cats are more commonly afflicted than females. The exact cause of the disease in cats is not known, although obesity (the major predisposing condition), chronic pancreatitis, other hormonal diseases (e.g.,hyperthyroidism, Cushing's disease, and acromegaly), and certain medications (e.g., megestrol acetate and corticosteroids like prednisolone) have all been linked to the disease.

In people, diabetes is classified into Type I and Type II forms. The Type I human diabetic is unable to secrete insulin and is totally insulin dependent. In Type II diabetes, the person develops diabetes later in life and only has a partially secrete insulin. In cats, diabetes mellitus is generally divided into two different types: insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (similar to type I diabetes in people), and non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (similar to Type II in people). Approximately one-half to three-quarters of diabetic cats have the insulin-dependent type. All cats are started on insulin shortly after they are diagnosed, since the type will not be know. Some cats – about 1/3 - go into diabetic remission when using a particular insulin and on a specific type of diet. These may be the non insulin dependent cats.

Diagnosis

Diabetes Mellitus is diagnosed by clinical signs and laboratory findings. The clinical signs are typically increased drinking, increased urination (in extreme amounts, typically) and weight loss. Sometime an increase in appetite is seen. Less commonly, a cat can present very sick, with decreased appetite and extreme lethargy. The bloodwork and urinalysis demonstrate high levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood and urine. The sick diabetic cat may also have high levels of ketones in the urine.

Treatment

Left untreated, diabetes will shorten a cat's lifespan. A dangerous, sometimes fatal condition called ketoacidosis may develop, indicated by loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, weakness, dehydration, and breathing abnormalities. A diabetes-related disorder called diabetic neuropathy may cause cats to become progressively weaker, especially in the hind legs, impairing their ability to jump and causing them to walk with their hocks touching the ground. Diabetes treatment is based on the severity of the disease. Cats with ketoacidosis require prompt intensive care, which usually includes fluid therapy and short-acting insulin injections. Treatment consists of dietary management and insulin injections

Diet

In cats, one of the most important aspects of the management of diabetes mellitus is the use of the low-carbohydrate diets. Most experts feel that this change alone is extremely significant in regulating the feline diabetic. High carbohydrate diets predispose cats to obesity, and, in some cats, can then lead to the development of diabetes. Most, but not all canned foods for cats are made to be adequately high in protein/low in carbohydrate. A canned prescription diet can be used, but there are others available if your cat will not eat the therapeutic diets.

A “Protein/Fat/Carbohydrate” chart is available on the website: www.catinfo.org. Most experts recommend a canned diet with 7% or less carbohydrate content as “calorie %” or metabolizable energy (ME). Compare foods on the list for high protein content and low carbohydrate content.

Dry alternatives to the therapeutic diets are very difficult to find. There are a few that are low in carbohydrate content, but none that are less than 7% carbohydrates. And, since water as part of the food is extremely important in cats, dry alternatives, in the long term, are not recommended.

It is important for obese cats to lose weight to better attain regulation. The high protein, low carbohydrate diets work very well for this. Feeding 2 meals a day prior to giving insulin is recommended and can help with weight loss, but 2-4 meals can be offered when using Lantus if your cat will not eat a larger amount at once.

Your veterinarian will usually start by putting your cat on an all canned, high protein, moderate fat and low carbohydrate diet. Some cats will take some time to get used to this change in diet, especially if they have been on an all dry food diet. It is very important to make sure your cat is eating something, so slowly changing the diet in cats that don’t initially like canned food is extremely important.

Skinny diabetic cats can have more food with increased frequency.

Insulin

Your cat will be prescribed insulin and your veterinarian will show you how to administer the insulin injections to your cat. Cats are initially started on Lantus (glargine) insulin because most respond best to this type of insulin. The combination of a low carbohydrate, high protein diet with lantus insulin can put your cat into remission (not needing insulin), sometimes very quickly. It is therefore important to check glucose levels early on and frequently. Your veterinarian will ask you to make appointments periodically to check glucose (blood sugar) curves. These will tell how well the insulin dose is working in your cat throughout the day and allow for changes in these doses for better regulation.

Home Blood Glucose Testing

Many cats are comfortable with periodic glucose monitoring at home. However, not every pet is amenable to getting pricked with a lancet and we do not want your pet to fear interaction with you and do not want you to get bitten or scratched, so you will have to determine if your cat will be open to having you home test. Home testing may work best for pets that become so agitated by going to the vet that their blood sugar levels are altered at the office and cannot be interpreted. Further, a pet owner can save a great of deal of money if they can produce their own glucose curve at home when the veterinarian requests one.
Human glucose meters can be obtained from any drugstore but ideally the AlphaTrak glucometer should be used as it is designed for pets. The AlphaTrak is more accurate in cats and dogs than the human equipment, although there are a few of the human products that have been used that seem to work sufficiently. If you would like to get an AlphaTrak meter, contact your veterinarian.

People love to pamper their pets, lavishing them with treats and affection. Cat treats can be used to reinforce positive behavior, as well as an inexpensive way to show your cat you love them. With such a wide variety of treats, choosing the right one is key. Cats are particular, so knowing your cat’s preference is important but there will be some trial and error with finding the perfect supplement for your pet.

The first important factor in choosing a pet treat is to pay attention to any relevant medical conditions your pet may have. Food is medicine and some foods can have adverse effects on your pet’s health if used improperly. Cats are susceptible to food allergies and can have regular digestive issues. To help combat this, some pet food brands have a hydrolyzed protein: a broken down protein to its basic component, which eases their digestion. The main novel protein, such as chicken or soy, is more calorie dense and can help decrease immune reaction, or food allergies. Other additives that can be beneficial to your cat’s well-being are antioxidants, omega 3 and fatty acids. These help to support a healthy coat and help with dry skin.

The very popular and preventive treat that can help keep your cat’s mouth clean and healthy are dental oral treats. Treats for your pet’s dental health are uniquely designed with specific shape and texture to help clean built up tartar. The treats use the cat’s natural chewing action to get into those hard to reach places. The popularity comes from the convenience of daily oral health, without the battle of daily brushing. Its important to note that while dental home care is extremely important it cannot take the place of an anesthetized dental cleaning. Cats also have the tendency to get hair balls from their daily grooming; it is especially predominant in long hair cat breeds and in compulsive groomers. When the hair doesn’t pass regularly though the digestive tract, it starts to build up, causing your pet discomfort. Certain treats are dual textured and have plant based fiber blends to promote the healthy digestion of the hair.

We’re all busy and sometimes there doesn’t seem to be time to give your cat the treats they need regularly. Cat dispensing toys help motivate your cat and gives them physical exercise. In door cats are much safer than their outdoor counterparts but can become sedentary when not influenced to be active. Healthy Weight = Healthy Cats

Feeding a healthy diet is the best way to help your cat have a happy, healthy, longer life. There can be a lot of confusion about what type of diet your companion should be on. The American Animal Hospital Association and the American Association of Feline Practitioners now recommend feeding a canned cat food in addition to a dry kibble food with 30-45% protein content to your cat. Typically, you should be feeding about 3 oz. of canned for per day to get a sufficient amount of water in your pet’s diet.

Cats are obligate carnivores and do not have the involuntary need to make sure they drink enough water to keep themselves hydrated. In the wild, cats rely on their prey to give them adequate amount of water to help keep themselves hydrated. In addition, adding canned cat food will increase the moisture content and will help decrease the chance of obesity which is one of the number-one problems we see in cats today. Keeping your cat hydrated also decreases the risk of urinary tract problems, and decreases the risk of your companion developing diabetes and kidney disease. A complete diet consists of water, energy, protein (adult felines needs 30-45%), fat, essential fatty acids, minerals, and vitamins all in appropriate balanced proportions. Cats need a low to no-carbohydrate food. The protein sources recommended for all cats are poultry based and rabbit based, fish and beef are not recommended due to them being highly addictive, as well as, surprisingly, being the cause of many allergy issues in cats.

Switching dry kibble eaters to a canned diet is easier than you might think! We recommend slowly increasing the portions of the wet food over a week to two week period. Kidney Failure in Cats

Your cat’s kidneys play a central role in almost all of its bodily processes. They help to control the blood pressure and regulate the amount and chemical consistency of fluid in the bloodstream. They produce a variety of vitally needed hormones and enzymes, and they contribute to the production of red blood cells. They also remove metabolic waste, such as urea, mineral salts and poisonous substances, from its blood.

Unfortunately, feline kidneys are susceptible to potentially life threatening diseases. While there are cases of congenital (present at birth) renal (kidney) disease, the majority of cases are acquired. Acquired renal diseases are divided into 2 categories: Acute and Chronic renal failure.

Acute Renal Failure has a sudden onset of a week to a month. Common causes of acute renal failure include urethral blockages (a “blocked” cat) that interfere with the flow of blood to the kidney or the flow of urine from it. Other causes are ingesting toxins such as antifreeze, pesticides, and cleaning fluids. Ingestion of ibuprofen can cause severe acute kidney failure and death. Ingestion or even just contact with any of the Lily family of flowers can cause acute renal failure. Signs of acute renal failure will be non specific. Acute onset of vomiting and decreased or no appetite should be investigated quickly. It can occur in a cat of any age. If it is diagnosed quickly and treated immediately, kidney damage resulting from acute renal failure is potentially reversible. Very early treatment makes the prognosis for full recovery excellent, and a cat often can go on to enjoy a normal life span. Acute renal failure must be given emergency treatment. If caused by any type of urinary-tract blockage, for example, the obstruction must be removed immediately. Intravenous solution infusions must be administered without delay in order to correct fluid and electrolyte imbalances in the blood.

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is an incurable condition that mainly afflicts middle-aged and older cats. It occurs when 75 percent or more of functional kidney tissue has been destroyed and replaced by scar tissue. Unlike acute renal failure, the onset and progression of this chronic condition is gradual, extending over many months or even years. The cause of chronic renal failure is unknown. Advanced dental disease, kidney infection and inflammation and urethral obstructions can contribute to loss of healthy kidney tissue.

In cats over seven years of age, chronic kidney disease is one of the most frequent causes of illness. Up to 50% of elderly cats are affected with some degree of kidney disease. Early signs of disease such as weight loss and poor coat quality are often dismissed as normal aging changes, delaying the diagnosis and treatment until the cat is in later stages of the disease. In some cases, little can be done to prolong the life of a cat diagnosed with late-stage chronic renal failure. However, following EARLY diagnosis, it is quite common for some cats to live for one to three years or even longer. So it is very important to identify chronic kidney disease early.

Signs of Kidney Failure
Indication that the kidneys are failing include an increase in water consumption (polydipsia) and in urination (polyuria). Sometimes these signs are insidious in their onset and can be missed in early stages: weight loss; apparent decline in appetite; and, in some cases, occasional vomiting. As soon as any of these signs are observed, you should immediately seek veterinary care.

Treating Kidney Failure
In the vast majority of chronic renal failure case, treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Some cats may require initial intravenous fluid therapy to correct dehydration (and perhaps electrolyte abnormalities), but once stable, treatment is aimed at supporting kidney function and decreasing the complications of CKD. Despite therapy, CKD cannot be reversed and in most cases will also progress over time, although sometimes very slowly.

Optimal management of renal failure usually requires repeat diagnostics at regular intervals (including blood pressure assessment, blood and urine tests) to identify treatable complications as they arise, such as anemia, low potassium, high phosphate, urinary infections, and hypertension. Dietary modification is important in cats with CKD to improve quality of life and slow progression of disease, but a variety of other treatments may be valuable also, depending on individual needs.

Dietary management is critical in cats with CKD, and there are three main aspects to this:

Water intake: Cats with CKD are more likely to become dehydrated (due to the reduced ability of the kidneys to conserve water). Maintaining a good fluid intake is therefore very important, and may help to slow progression of CKD. As cats obtain most of their water intake from their food, whenever possible, cats with CKD should be fed canned foods rather than dry foods.

Protein content: A diet that is restricted in protein may be recommended for your cat. Many of the toxic products that accumulate in the blood in CKD are a result of protein breakdown, and feeding a reduced protein diet will help to minimize this and improve quality of life. Protein restriction has to be performed with care though as too little protein can lead to muscle atrophy and weight loss and be detrimental to your cat’s health.

Low phosphorus content: Restricting the phosphorus content of the diet appears to be very beneficial in protecting the kidneys from further damage in cats with CKD.

It is important to remember that EARLY DIAGNOSIS is the key to your cat’s longevity. Your cat’s ability to concentrate urine will often be affected prior to detecting abnormalities in the blood, especially if monitored routinely. We recommend annual urinalysis and blood work, especially in cats over 7 years of age, in order to detect changes in kidney function at the earliest possible time. In that way, we can make the necessary changes to ensure your cat lives the longest life possible.

Feline Diabetes

Diabetes is a growing medical condition, not only for humans, but also in our furry felines as well. Diabetes if left untreated, can drastically affect your cat’s quality of life and lifespan over all. But the good news is that feline diabetes is manageable!

So what is feline diabetes? Diabetes (diabetes mellitus) in kitties simply means that your cat is no longer producing enough insulin or they are not able to process the insulin they have made, therefor they have excess glucose (sugar) in their bloodstream. Insulin is a very important hormone that is secreted by the pancreas and is used by the body to help regulate and balance the glucose levels in the blood. There are three types of feline diabetes: Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3

Type 1 Diabetes:

This form of diabetes is very rare in the cat and occurs when the pancreas is not able to produce enough insulin to regulate the glucose (sugar) in the blood stream which causes persistent high glucose levels in the blood.

Type 2 Diabetes:

The most commonly diagnosed type is type 2 diabetes. This occurs when the cat is producing insulin like normal, but the cells in the cat’s body don’t respond to the insulin that is being produced. This causes an increase in glucose (sugar) in the bloodstream and the cat becomes hyperglycemic (high blood sugar).

Type 3 Diabetes:

Type 3 Diabetes is also less common and occurs as a secondary condition to another primary disease which is causing damage to the pancreas.

There are various signs and symptoms to watch out for that may suggest further testing for diabetes in your cat. Watch for:

Increased thirst
Sudden increase in appetite
Sudden weight loss (despite an increase in appetite)
Increased urination
Increased lethargy

Your cat’s diet is also very important, especially if they have diabetes. The majority of cats diagnosed with feline diabetes are diagnosed as overweight as well. (Though, keep in mind if your cat has had unregulated diabetes for some time, it may be underweight) Additionally, most veterinarians recommend that diabetic cats should be on an all wet food diet that is high in protein and low in carbohydrates. Dry cat foods are very high in carbs, which even for a non-diabetic cat can be very hard to break down leading to obesity, but in a diabetic cat can cause their blood sugar levels to fluctuate. Even grain-free dry food diets contain a lot of carbohydrates. Wet cat food also contains a lot more water, which is essential for your cat! Cats are notorious for not drinking enough water and wet cat food is a great way to get them that extra H2O!

Exercise is another important aspect of keeping your diabetic cat happy and healthy. Simply playing with your cat daily will help a great deal. Toys on strings and hand-held lasers are fun and interactive toys that will help you exercise your cat. Also, toys that stimulate your cat to play on their own when you are not home are also great!

In some cases though, your cat’s diabetes will need to be regulated with diet and exercise as well with the administration of insulin injections. Your veterinarian will work closely with you and your kitty to develop a regimen for testing and controlling your cat's blood sugar levels.

America's Favorite Pet

There is an estimated 96 million owned cats in America, making them the most popular pet in the country! With 63% of pet owners saying that their cats a true members of their families. Our furry companions require a lot of patience, investment and reward. Being instinctually independent creatures, cats are very unique. They sleep about 70% of their lives, the equivalent of 16 hours a day; and they exhibit the most unusual behaviors. A favorite of these is the familiar humming “purr”, which they can produce as loud as a diesel engine and at a speed of 26 “purrs” per second. Additional traits that make our furry felines so popular is their ability to adapt as indoor or outdoor pets and in multi or single pet families, they can jump as much as seven times their height, see incredible well at night, and even distinguish between colors! Research as shown that a cat’s brain is more similar to a human’s than a dog’s brain and so it comes as no surprise that these family members get spoiled by American pet owners who spend a collective $100 million dollars annually on treats and toys alone for their cats!

While these purrs-tastic pets get pampered at home, they are also the least likely pet to be seen behind the dog at a veterinarian’s office. Many cats are fearful of car rides and their carriers, which makes it harder for them to get regular medical care. Having an unhappy, nervous cat can make it difficult for owners to decide whether it is worth the scratching and clawing to get them into the vet and may delay important examinations and vaccinations. The best way to ensure that your cat will be manageable with getting to the vet is training from a young age and daily exposure to their carriers. Have the carrier in a room that is familiar to the cat and line with bedding to make it feel comfortable. The goal is to make the cat carrier a safe and secure area where they are used to relaxing and can associate with good feelings. If you can avoid it, do not force your cat in the carrier. Simply set it down and walk away. Pet owners can also use a product called Feilway, a pheromonal anti-anxiety spray or wipe that can be applied to the carrier or bedding to help keep your cat calm. Carriers that load from the top or in the middle are helpful for veterinarians to access the cat, letting them examine your pet while they are still sitting comfortably.

Cat owners spent an average of $193 a year on preventive veterinary care. Bi-annual exams, vaccinations, proper oral health, parasite checks, and nutritional counseling are the main areas of focus to keep our beloved pets healthy and more importantly happy. Taking the time and effort to help make doctor visits enjoyable and painless will extend the life of our pets and help keep illnesses and diseases at bay. Investing in your cat’s health ensures that they remain a true member of your family for years to come!

Tips and Tricks for Getting Your Cat to the Vet

Hi! Niko here, my mom is a Veterinary Assistant at West Ridge Animal Hospital and I wanted to write an article about how to get other cats to the Hospital stress-free and happy, using my own personal preferences! I’m known as a “hider” and a “night walker” with a loud voice. I am a Siamese kitty so that probably goes without saying. When people I don’t know come to my house I hide and I don’t come out until I feel safe. I also have quite a few health concerns including bad hips from previous dislocation, trouble with my knees and a heart murmur. All this and I am only two years old! I know it sounds scary, but don’t feel sorry for me because I’m in the BEST hands with my mommy and West Ridge Animal Hospital. With all these issue I used to be absolutely terrified of the cat carrier because I knew when that came out I was going for my check-ups. My mom put a few of these tips into place and worked with me and now I’m glad to say I’m not so afraid anymore!

I am going to share with you a few tips and tricks that have worked for me that my family did and has changed me from a scaredy cat to a brave cat!

Bring your cat in a carrier, even ones on leashes still get scared when it involves coming to the vet or even a car ride. Coming in a carrier is best because there are often other animals in the waiting room, both cats, dogs, and exotic creatures. It also helps cats to feel safe if they are secure.
Use Feliway wipes or sprays to scent the carrier to help stimulate the calming hormone they produce normally from cheek “marking”. Leave the carrier out for a few days before placing your cat into it so it knows it is not scary. Cats might be suspicious or avoid this area at first, but give it time. Eventually they will see the carrier as another piece of their environment.
Placing treats or some type of yummy wet food inside the carrier will help show your cat the carrier isn’t scary and provides them with a treat. As your cat gets more comfortable around the carrier let them come and go without closing them in. If your cat refuses to venture inside of it, try putting the treat on the outside or close by at first and gradually moving it closer.
Bring your cat along in small car rides for 5-10 minutes in a carrier to help desensitize them to the car. Take your kitty to the mail box and back or around the block for starters. Do not leave them alone in the car, keep the music soothing and calm, and always reward their good behavior.

The decision to spay or neuter your furry feline is an important one for all pet owners. It can be the single best decision you make for your fur baby’s long-term health. There are many theories when it comes to the medical and behavioral effects of spaying and neutering cats. It is a controversial subject with numerous viewpoints among trainers, breeders, and pet owners. Spaying and neutering are surgical procedures performed by veterinarians that render cats incapable of breeding by removing their reproductive organs. When a female cat is spayed (also called an ovariohysterectomy), the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and uterus are removed. Neutering results in the castration of male cats and the complete removal of their testicles (Animal Health Foundation).

As stated by the Animal Health Foundation, spayed felines are less likely to develop breast cancer and will not be at risk for ovarian and uterine cancer, while neutered males will not be at risk for testicular cancer. Each year, millions of homeless cats are euthanized or end up in shelters due to a lack of good homes and availability of willing to adopt pet owners.

Although any cat can spray urine to mark territory, intact males are those who most often engage in this behavior. Both intact male and female cats may try to escape their homes to roam outside. When in estrus (heat), females are more likely to show erratic behavior such as yowling and writhing on the ground to attract male cats. Intact males can detect females in heat from miles away, so it is not safe to allow them outside(AHF).

There are several myths about your cats’ behavioral change after he or she is spayed or neutered. After sterilization your cat may be calmer and less likely to exhibit certain behaviors, but his or her personality will not change. Contrary to myths, a sterilized feline does not become lazy and overweight after surgery. However, fixed felines do require fewer calories to maintain their body weight once spayed or neutered(AHF). In an effort to avoid the start of urine marking and eliminate the chance for pregnancy, it is advisable to schedule the surgery when your kitten reaches around 6 months of age. It is possible to spay a kitten while she is in heat, but not recommended since she’s susceptible to increased blood loss during surgery. Older cats can be good candidates for sterilization, but it’s best to allow your veterinarian to determine the safest procedure to be performed.

The medical benefits resulting from spaying and neutering your furry felines will only lead to longer and healthier lives. It’s an undeniably effective form of birth and population control, and one that enables owners to be more relaxed about their pets in sexually mixed company. Why Lab Work?

Annual blood work is very important for your pet’s health. Blood and urine tests are extremely useful tools for assessing the health of your fur baby. By running labs a veterinarian can learn if your pet is diabetic, has kidney, or liver disease, or an infection. Many of these ailments cannot be observed during a physical exam, but if caught early can be successfully treated or controlled providing your pet a longer life and a better quality of life. Even in young, otherwise apparently healthy pets, blood work may be beneficial to determine a normal baseline for your pet or to provide early detection of underlying health conditions. Wellness Profiles are often used to screen for general overall health of organs such as thyroid, liver and kidneys, and include electrolytes, glucose and a complete blood count as well as the heartworm parasite in dogs. Some medications, including those used for anesthetic purposes are processed and eliminated from the body by the liver and/or kidneys. Decreased organ function can complicate or eliminate the body's ability to process such medications which may endanger the health of your four legged friend. Health conditions such as diabetes and/or kidney failure may also be detected prior to your pet developing noticeable outward symptoms. Remember this is a snap shot of your pet's health at that given date, so blood work should be completed on a minimum of an annual basis for continued monitoring. Consider the fact that one year of your life is equal to seven years of your pet's life, so a sample taken one year ago from your pet would be like a sample taken seven years ago from yourself.

For senior animals, lab work should ideally be done at least yearly and possibly more frequently based on lab results. If your pet is 6 years or older, it would be a good idea to check with your veterinarian about doing senior lab work.

Early detection can make a tremendous difference in adding years to your pet's life. If detected early, 75 % of common diseases in dogs and 63% of common diseases in cats can be prevented by dietary modifications alone over a one-year period.

Yearly blood work should be performed to detect infections and diseases, helping us to detect disease early. In many situations early detection is essential for more effective treatment. The type of blood work will be determined specifically for each pet depending on his or her individual needs. This annual blood test is convenient to do at the time of your pet's annual heartworm test but can be done at any time of year.

Why Should You Vaccinate Your Pet?

Prior to the invention of vaccinations, both people and animals would frequently die from viral and bacterial infections. Before vaccinations an animal would have to be exposed to the virus or bacteria and try to fight it off in order to develop immunity. Vaccinations are a safe way to expose an animal to that virus and develop immunity without the animal actually contracting the disease. Young puppies are given some immunity from their mothers while nursing but this fades very quickly, which is why the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) recommends starting vaccinations at eight weeks of age. The vaccination protocols that we use at West Ridge Animal Hospital, have been tested and developed by the AVMA to ensure that your pet remains immune to virus or bacteria being vaccinated for.

A question we frequently get is, “Why should I vaccinate my indoor cat for rabies?” Unfortunately, there has been a significant increase in the number of positive rabies incidences in Weld County over the last few years. The two most common carriers of the virus are bats and skunks; and it is certainly not uncommon for a bat to make its way down your chimney and into your home. This bat could then go on to bite your cat or, if you have a hunter, your cat could eat the bat, exposing herself to the virus by puncturing the saliva glands. Rabies cannot be cured in animals, so the consequences of this would be quite dire. Also, due to the severity of the virus, Colorado has made vaccinating your pet against rabies a state law.

Another question we get a lot is “Do I need to vaccinate my older animal?” The simple answer is yes; your animals need to stay up to date on their vaccinations for the course of their lives. Currently, all studies indicate that the core vaccinations in dogs – rabies and the distemper/ parvovirus combo – last three years before their immunity fades while the non-core vaccinations last one year. In cats the only vaccination found to last three years is the distemper combo and all other vaccinations have bene shown to last one year. Therefore, it is essential to keep your pet up to date in order to preserve the immunity. Older animals, just like older people, have weakened immune systems so it is, in fact, even more important to vaccinate your older animals to help them remain immune to the lethal viruses and bacteria they could be exposed to.

Finally, remember that not all of the non-core vaccinations are appropriate for every animal. Your veterinary nurse will be able to guide you in making decisions about the best vaccination protocol for your animal.

Twice Yearly for Life

Pets age at a faster rate than people. It is a popular misconception that one calendar year equates to seven years in a dog's life. In actual fact, in one calendar year a dog may age the equivalent of four to fifteen years in a human's life. The reason for this dramatic difference is that puppies reach maturity very quickly, and are essentially adolescents or young adults by a year of age - thus they are considered to be the equivalent of a 15 year old by their first birthday. During the second year, the rate of aging slows down a little so that the average dog is considered to be the equivalent of a 24-25 year old by their second birthday. After that, the rate of aging is estimated to be 4-5 dog years per calendar year, depending on the size and breed. Large breed dogs age relatively more quickly than small breed dogs. By the time your dog reaches its 6^th birthday, it will be either middle-aged (if a small or medium breed dog) or geriatric (if a large breed dog).

Your veterinarian is in the best position to recommend how often your dog should have a wellness examination, based on its specific breed, health status and lifestyle. During your four legged kiddos comprehensive wellness exam we will assess your animal for general appearances of health including, temperature, weight, gait, skeletal and muscular build and behavior. During this exam the Veterinarian will discuss with you the specific breed of your animal as well as their age and if it correlates with any predispositions of health. The veterinarian will also perform a thorough nose to tail examination of your animal. They will exam mouth, and discuss oral hygiene and techniques for home dental care. The veterinarian will then examine the eyes, ears, nose with a scope to make sure they appear normal and healthy. They will palpate your animal’s body to make sure the prescapular, popliteal, inguinal, submandibular lymph nodes are of normal size and shape. Next the veterinarian will examine your pets coat to make sure the skin is healthy, smooth, and normally flexible with no scabs, scales, growths, parasites, or irritated areas. The veterinarian will also listen to your pet’s heart to make sure the heart is strong and healthy, and each valve sounds normal. While listening to the heart the veterinarian is checking for heart murmurs, and pulse rate, rhythm, and strength. The veterinarian will also listen to the lungs to make sure they are clear and healthy; then they check your dog’s nose to make sure it is cool and moist. The veterinarian will then palpate your pet checking the internal organs, including the urinary tract, bladder, and genitals.
