Winning is easy. I do it all the time. If I take into account the entertainment factor, I actually win far more often than I lose. This is partially because I never gamble above my means, and it’s partially because I have an awful lot of fun when I’m out gambling, so the entertainment factor is worth a lot to me.

That being said, I don’t often go home a winner from a strictly financial standpoint. I frequently go home happy and satisfied that I got my money’s worth, but I doubt I fare any better than most recreational gamblers when it comes to just the money.
This is a good example of how all the knowledge in the world really can’t overcome the house advantage. One would think I would tend to fare a bit better than the ordinary Joe who hasn’t spent years studying and working in casino operations as I have, but one would unfortunately be wrong.

Although I frequently advise my readers to pay attention to payback percentages and compare paytables to make sure they’re getting the most bang for their buck, I’d like to point out that following this advice never puts you (or me) at an advantage over the house. It might put you at an advantage over other players who are playing tighter machines or using poor strategies, but the house always has the mathematical advantage. Actually, they have several advantages.

You see, the odds aren’t the only thing in the casinos favor. In fact, if a casino offered a game that paid even money on the flip of a coin – a perfectly even 50/50 chance with absolutely no mathematical house advantage – they would still win.
There are actually a couple of reasons why a casino would still be at an advantage on a game with no mathematical benefit for them. For one, betting limits keep people from using things like the Martingale strategy, where you double every bet until you win.
Without limits, this type of strategy might actually work, but the upper limit will eventually make a loser out of everyone who tries this method when they hit a bad streak and reach a point where they can no longer double. Of course, running out of money is an issue for players using an increasing bet strategy on a bad streak too, while it’s not much of a problem for a casino.

Another advantage casinos have is the fact that people rarely quit until they’re done having fun. Think about it for a minute. Sometimes when we play we hit right away, maybe not a huge jackpot, but a $100 or $200 winner perhaps. Will you really take the money and run if you’ve only been playing two minutes and have a full drink in front of you? Or if you and your friends just started the night? Would you quit right away and go home if you won the very first coin flip?

What about when you play and can’t hit a significant payback for a long while? You might play for a number of hours and be down several hundred before you finally hit a mediocre jackpot, at which point you’re done playing and can run away close to even, or at least down less than you were. Down less than you were is still not winning though, is it?

It’s really only when you hit a nice win after some time playing that most of us will be able to walk away with more money than we came in with. The mid-point hits are where the money is. You might put some back if you’re not quite done, but it’s easier for most of us to cash out winning when we’re at the point where we’re satisfied we’ve played enough, but the win is still enough to surpass our losses because we haven’t been playing too long.

The way people play, the unlimited time and money casinos have to overcome short-term losses and the limits they impose keep casinos at an advantage even when the odds aren’t decidedly in their favor. Poor play decisions on games with complex strategies like video poker even allow some casinos to offer 100%-plus payback machines and still come out winning consistently.
Does this mean none of us should ever play because there’s just too much stacked against us? Of course not! What it means is gambling should be treated as what it is – entertainment. And entertainment has value.

The house always has the mathematical advantage. In the long-term, they’ll always win from a financial standpoint. When we compare paytables we can minimize the house edge and when we hit at the right time we can go home a monetary winner, but only when we stick to our limits and enjoy ourselves can we add enough entertainment value to the overall experience to come out a winner again and again and again. And that’s why having fun while gambling might be the best advice of all.

10 arrests and nearly $200,000 in cash seized in Wake poker raids

Three raids at separate illegal gambling operations in Wake County Friday resulted in 10 arrests and nearly $200,000 in cash seized.

10 arrested in Wake poker raids -- Agents with the N.C. Division of Alcohol Law Enforcement say they've raided high-stakes poker operations at homes in Raleigh and Wendell.

Homes were searched at ,4029 Strickland Farm Road and 6909 Breckenridge Ave., both of Raleigh, and a cabin at 6424 Robertson Pond Road in Wendell.

Jeff Lasater, special agent in charge for ALE, said said the investigation uncovered a complex gambling enterprise involving "sports betting and high stakes poker complete with barricaded doors, armed security, and elaborate surveillance equipment."

Items seized included poker and craps tables, computer and surveillance equipment, marijuana, drug paraphernalia and an AR-15 assault rifle.

The following people were charged with misdemeanor violations:

Priestly Early Pierce, 75, of 3636 Kemp Drive, Knightdale – operate a game of chance at which money was bet and keep and use a gaming table (craps table).

Eddie Lee Elks Jr., 56, of 602 Park Ave., Roanoke Rapids – play a game of chance at which money was bet.

Donald Ray Daniels, 61, of 141 White Oak Road, Enfield – play a game of chance at which money was bet.

Sonja Kay Stone, 50, of 5609 Laniel Court, Raleigh – allow the operation of an illegal game of chance.

Leonard Wiggins, 73, of 823 Leggett Road, Rocky Mount – play a game of chance at which money was bet.

Michael Lee Brown, 47, of 72 Shady Lake Road, Tarboro – play a game of chance at which money was bet.

Harold William Elliot, 72, of 6909 Breckenridge Ave., Raleigh – operate a game of chance at which money was bet.

Lasater said more gambling and drug-related charges are expected in the case.

If you are new to the game of Texas Holdem and want to take the game seriously you need to avoid common mistakes. If you can plug these 10 leaks, you’ll start making some nice money at poker. All it takes is time and dedication.
There are some specific mistakes that are so common in No Limit Hold’em that I will most likely see at least one player making every one of them in every session I play poker for the rest of my life. I have compiled a list of what I believe are the ten most common mistakes made in No Limit Hold’em. Imagine how much a typical poker player’s profits would improve if the ten most common mistakes that he or she made were corrected.

Betting in position on the river with a hand that has a good chance to win in a showdown, if you will have a hard time getting called by a weaker hand or getting a better hand to fold.
Example: On the river, there are four small to medium clubs on the board, and you have the third nut flush using the queen of clubs. If you are last to act and all of your opponents check to you, there is a good chance you have the best hand. However, if you make a significant bet, you might not be able to get called by a weaker hand, and there is some chance an opponent could be slow-playing the nut or second nut flush. Hence, you might not have anything to gain by betting if you have the best hand, but you stand to lose money unnecessarily if you are beat. Checking behind and showing down your hand is usually the best play in this situation.

Over-valuing big trips with a weak kicker, especially in unraised multi-way pots.
Example: If you limp in with ace-three of hearts before the flop, and four opponents see a flop of ace-ace-seven of different suits, there is a good chance you have the best hand because there is only one ace left in the deck. However, if you end up putting a lot of money in the pot, you will usually only get played with if you are beat since your opponents will usually be aware of the big pair on the board and will probably not be willing to put much money in the pot without having at least an ace, and your opponent’s kicker will usually be higher than yours, or at best, you might chop. Many players understand that top pair with a weak kicker is not a particularly strong hand because an opponent can easily have you out-kicked. However, this idea is often not considered with trips.

With small trips with a weak kicker, such as trip fives with a six kicker, it is less likely that you will run into an opponent who also has trips since small cards are less commonly played before the flop. This is especially true is the pot is short-handed and/or the pot was raised preflop. In this case, your hand would also be more deceptive, and you might stand to win a big pot against the preflop raiser with a big pair.

Slow-playing big hands just because.
Example: If you flop a set on a draw-heavy flop, you should rarely slow-play. By playing the hand aggressively, you can protect your hand by making it too expensive for draws to call profitably. If you let your opponents draw for free, you would actually make more money in the long run by making a big bet and taking down the pot on the flop. Players often make the mistake of trying to keep people in the hand on the flop and turn, and then bet big on the river. But by then, their opponents would have already missed their draws, and they will not get paid off.

Even if you are not too concerned about protecting your hand, it is still often more desirable to get money in the pot on the flop rather than on the turn or river because if your opponent has a second best hand like top pair or an overpair, your action might get killed if a scare card comes on the turn or river. Moreover, if you are deep-stacked, building the pot early will magnify the bet sizes on the turn and river, allowing you to play a very big pog.

Trying to bluff a calling station.
There are some players who tend to call bets with just about anything. Trying to bluff such a player is useless. You can make a lot of money against this type of player if you are patient enough to make the best hand and value bet it all the way.

Calling raises with small pocket pairs or small suited connectors before the flop when you are relatively short-stacked.
Example: If you have a small pocket pair, you are about a 7.5 to 1 underdog to flop a set (and an even greater underdog to actually win the hand given that you flop a set). If you are facing a raise of $25 and you only have $100 to start the hand, the best pot odds you can get is 4 to 1 if the pot is heads-up, so even if you double up the times you flop your set and fold to a bet the times you do not flop your set, you will lose money in the long run.

Over-betting the nuts or close to the nuts when your hand is obvious or your opponent is not likely to have much of a second best hand.
Example: If you have the ace of diamonds and there are four diamonds on the board after the river, you will have the nuts (assuming there is no straight flush possible) and you want to get paid off as much as possible, but if you bet or raise too much, your opponents will usually realize exactly what you have and fold. Since your hand is so obvious, you should usually bet or raise modestly to encourage a call from a smaller flush.

Calling preflop raises from tight opponents with trouble hands that are likely to be dominated.
The most common hands that tight players raise with before the flop are big pocket pairs (jacks or better) and ace-king. If you call a tight opponent’s raise with a trouble hand like ace-queen, and the flop comes ace high, you will either have a second best hand against ace-king or even pocket aces, or you will have the best hand against pocket kings, pocket queens, or pocket jacks, but you will usually not be able to get paid off much because your opponent will be concerned about the ace on the flop. If the flop comes queen high, you will either have a second best hand against pocket aces, pocket kings, or even pocket queens, or you will have the best hand against ace-king or pocket jacks, but you will usually not be able to get paid off much because your opponent will either have nothing or be concerned about the queen on the flop. With weaker trouble hands like ace-jack, ace-ten, king-queen, king-jack, king-ten, queen-jack, queen-ten, and jack-ten, it is even more likely that you could flop a second best hand if call a raise from a tight opponent.

Not betting enough to deny opponents the correct odds to chase.
Example: You have pocket aces, you raised to $25 before the flop and three players called, the flop is relatively safe but draw-heavy, and you bet $25 into the $100 pot on the flop. If any of your opponents has a flush draw, he would be about a 4 to 1 underdog to hit his flush on the turn, and he would be getting 5 to 1 on his money, so it is profitable for him to call (and not profitable for you). In general, betting at least half the pot will deny your opponents to odds to chase.

Over-valuing small flush draws and straight draws using only one hole card, especially in multi-way pots.
Examples: You have eight-seven of hearts on a flop of king-five-three with two hearts. You have a flush draw, and you might be getting the correct odds to call a bet if you knew you would make the best hand if you hit your flush on the turn. However, if there is even a small chance that another opponent has a bigger flush draw than yours, not only are you not getting the correct odds to call a bet, but you could have a very costly second best hand if you make your flush.

You have ace-ten and the flop is nine-eight-seven. You have an open-ended straight draw, but if another opponent has a ten, you will only chop the pot if you make your straight. If you chop the pot with an opponent, your other opponents would have to put twice as much money in the pot for you to make the same as if you had won the pot outright. Hence, it is much harder to get the correct odds to call a bet with your draw. Part of being a smart poker player is understanding that even if you consistently get your money in the pot with the best hand, you will occasionally get outdrawn and once in a while get a very bad beat. No matter how card dead you are or how bad you are running in one session, there is no reason to lose your patience and risk your money in an unprofitable situation (unless you have no choice as a very short-stack in a tournament). There has been precious little information on any potential purchase of the Full Tilt brand since the AGCC suspended their gaming license. There were rumours that a consortium of European investors were interested in the ailing site as well as a potential deal with Harrah’s, though nothing has been confirmed officially and all news of these potential deals petered out.

As the Alderney Gambling Control Commission (AGCC) held their hearing behind closed doors it was left to the assembled poker executives and investors to question whether investing in what was once the second largest poker site on the internet is worth the price. With hundreds of millions of dollars in lawsuits hanging around the neck of the beleaguered website, investors have been questioning as to whether the amount of money that they are going to have to pay to rescue the site would cost more than starting an entirely new brand.
Investors wonder whether Full tilt Poker is worth the bother, following yesterday’s revelations at the hearing.

While the out of pocket players wait to find out what their chances of getting their money back really are, investors are tempted to put their own money elsewhere. At the same time thousands of former players are migrating to other sites, where they know that their money will be protected.

After an entire day of deliberation, the AGCC finally recommenced the hearing at 17:45 GMT. It was announced that in the interests of justice and the best interest of Full Tilt customers, the hearing will be adjourned. This is so Full Tilt can pursue advanced investment negotiations, which could result in a better outcome for the players.

Maguire-Poker Scanda:l A trial date has been set for Spiderman star

Tobey Maguire has been ordered to appear in court to answer charges resulting from his participation in an illegal gambling ring.

The actor was named in a lawsuit last month for playing unlicensed poker with convicted fraudster Bradley Ruderman.

Maguire's lawyer later denied the accusations on his behalf, insisting that the Spider-Man star had no idea that the gaming was illegal.

While he has admitted to having earned $187,000 in winnings from the games, he has claimed that he should not have to return his winnings as he suffered a loss at Ruderman's hands.

Per documents filed in the US Bankruptcy Court in Los Angeles on Monday and obtained by E Online, Maguire and prosecutors have been given until November 30 to prepare their cases.

They must then appear at a trial scheduled for the week of January 30, 2012.

Eoghan O'Dea: To those in the know, O’Dea’s progress in Vegas is hardly a surprise. To date, he has won over half a million euro in prize money, including a career-best second place finish at the prestigious Poker Million tournament in 2009. Meet the young Irishman who is taking the World Series of Poker by storm (19.0 million).

Khoa Nguyen: The 29-year-old poker player and businessman was one of two Canadians to reach the final 32 of the 2011 WSOP Main Event and has a college degree in Electrical Engineering (16.4 million).

Hilton Laborda (7.1 million) - He's one of two Brazilians (and three South Americans) left in the field and you'd know it if you saw him. Laborda wears his flag on his back (literally) and his emotions on his sleeve, with is celebrations being felt rooms over. A final table finish for him would represent a huge step for South American poker, which has been developing quickly over the last few years.

Phil Collins (7.2 million) - Put your song jokes aside, pro player "USCphildo" is for real (I mean chart topper and WSOP frontrunner! What a life!). Our chip leader for much of Day 6, he's still in the top five and seems primed for a strong run in what is already proving to be the most profitable live tournament of a mostly-online career.

Matt Giannetti (7.9 million) - Quiet and reserved, Matt Giannetti flies under the radar while his closest friends enjoy poker stardom, but that doesn't mean his game isn't on their level. The Panorama Towers resident has been a mainstay in live and online, tournament and cash games for years and has come back in the main event for next to nothing on Day 3.

Ben Lamb (9.9 million) - Lamb's WSOP was epitomized Saturday when professional player Taylor Caby tweeted: "Walk into a bar. Ben Lamb is on TV. Oh look, he has pocket aces." Lamb is running white hot while taking full advantage with superior play and is leading the Player of the Year leader race as play starts today.

Ryan Lenaghan (12.8 million in chips) - Ladies and gentlemen, your chip leader. Ryan Lenaghan was amongst the chip leaders when he took town an eight-figure pot on Day 6 that separated his stack from the field. Phil Collins of Las Vegas picked up 3.5 million in chips during the first two hours of play Sunday and 72 players were eliminated from the no-limit Texas Hold 'em tournament after six hours. After the first break, Collins took the last of Joseph Cheong's nearly 1 million in chips to move up to nearly 8.7 million in chips - more than 4 times as many as the next highest player at his table.

A few hands later, Collins eliminated another player with a straight to move past 10 million in chips, well over 300 minimum bets given the slow-rising structure of the tournament.
Cheong gambled the last of his chips with ace-queen, a fairly strong hand for a player short on chips looking to double up. But Collins held pocket aces, the best starting hand in Texas Hold `em. Cheong picked up a pair when the community cards were dealt but it wasn't enough to prevent his elimination.

STUD OF THE DAY: Ben Lamb, who passed 11-time bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth Jr. in the series' Player of the Year race after the day's first four eliminations. The 26-year-old Oklahoman who now lives in Las Vegas was second in chips at the day's first break with 5.3 million in chips. The annual award will be determined based on Lamb's finish in the main event and the results of the World Series of Poker Europe later this year.

BUSTED OUT: Cheong, last year's third place finisher (114th, $54,851); Swedish professional Magnus Persson; gold bracelet winner Eli Elezra (107th, $54,851); Canadian pro Sorel Mizzi (95th, $64,531); Christian Harder (92nd, $64,531); one-time chip leader Daryl Jace (89th, $76,146).

UP NEXT: The remaining entrants will play eight to 10 hours on Monday to determine the last two or three tables.

POKER TALK: Stop-and-go: A poker play used by a player intending to gamble all his or her chips, but choosing to do it in two moves instead of one. A player doing a stop-and-go usually calls before the flop, with the intention of moving all-in no matter which three cards are dealt on the flop. Robert Peltekci gambled the last of his chips Sunday with a four-six of diamonds after calling before the first community cards were dealt. An opponent called his stop-and-go play after hitting an ace on the flop and eliminated the jeweler in 105th place.

HE SAID WHAT?: "Did you know there's no place in this hotel to buy underwear?'' - Thomas Oldcroft, a 60-year-old bill collector from O'Fallon, Mo., who won the $10,000 to enter the tournament by playing low-stakes blackjack online with an offshore operator. While staying at the Riviera, one of the Las Vegas Strip's oldest casinos, Oldcroft took a city bus to and from the main event at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. He busted in 128th place, winning $54,851.
