Martin Library’s Teen Forum has become the common meeting place for local teens since Martin Library’s grand re-opening in 2005. The Teen Forum offers free computer access, homework help, monthly teen programming, a teen job training program, and an inviting and safe atmosphere, exclusively offered to teens ages 13-18. Martin Library’s dynamic teen programming is vital in its outreach to the teen community, offering teens an outlet for socialization and recreation in a supervised and supportive environment. Over 1,500 York area teens participated in Martin Library’s teen programming in 2008. More and more, people look to the library for free access to the Internet, resources for jobs, education and training, free quality family activities, and all informational needs. Community members may take advantage of Martin Library’s resources seven days a week through June 28. The awards honored 22 Pennsylvania public libraries for programming in early literacy.

Awards were presented April 1 at the fifth annual Early Learning Forum and Best Practices Luncheon, Pennsylvania Libraries: Learning Starts Here! — an education session attended by several hundred librarians, advocates, and policymakers at the Hilton Harrisburg.

Here’s how the program evolved:

The Keystone Active Zone is a statewide campaign designed to create county-level partnerships between recreation, health, and education professionals to promote parks and trails as places for fitness and fun. In York County, the Healthy Lifestyles Task Force, a project of the Healthy York County Coalition, implements this program. Partners include Hanover Hospital, Lincoln Charter School, Northeastern School District, York City Health Bureau, York College of Pennsylvania Nursing Department, York County Parks, Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, and Wellspan Health.

This coalition created the Keystone Active Kids Field Guide, which uses guided activities to get kids out to local parks and learn about the world. For the first two years of the campaign, the Task Force distributed the Field Guide through a convenience store chain.

Over 3,000 were handed out, but very few were returned. The Task Force contacted the York County Library System for help. The libraries became partners and were advertised as the pick-up and drop-off point for the guides. The libraries promoted the campaign and handed out 8,200 copies at Summer Reading signups. About 1,200 kids returned them.

“The goal was to get the children active and involved over the summer, to keep them healthy,” said Paula Gilbert, director of Youth Services. “It’s family-friendly, getting moms and dads involved with the activities. We found the highest response to be from parents and their children between the ages of three and seven.”

The Field Guide, themed “Catch the Activity Bug,” coordinated with last year’s “Catch the Reading Bug @ Your Library” Summer Reading program. Each library in the system and its hours and locations were listed in the guide. For each bug, books were listed to read.
Gilbert believes the halo of good publicity has extended back to the library. An additional 1,100 children signed up for Reading Club in 2008 than 2007. And because the program was so successful, the library plans to participate again in 2009.

The program is important first because of its early literacy services to the citizens of York County. The Best Practices Award celebrates public library programs that are especially creative, innovative, and effective in serving young children, their families and caregivers.

The awards were presented by illustrator Wendell Minor and author Florence Minor. Their book, If You Were a Penguin, is this year’s selection for the One Book, Every Young Child initiative.

One Book, Every Young Child is a statewide literacy initiative, a collaborative project to promote the development of early literacy skills through interactive experiences with books and stories.

More than a half million Pennsylvania children ages three to six are reached annually through the One Book, Every Young Child program, which stresses the importance of reading early and often to young children and how that impacts their future lives.

The candidates include Susan Emmons, Michael Flannelly, Harry Ness, John Ogden, Chuck Patterson, Kathleen Prendergast, Andrea Marceca Strong, Erin Thompson, and Sandra Thompson. This free event is open to the public and will be held from 6:45 – 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22 at the library.

Dr. Demi Fair, director of the Paul Smith Library of Southern York County, will moderate the forum. Each candidate will have an equal opportunity to address the public by answering questions developed by a bi-partisan panel of community leaders and attorneys. Due to election restrictions, questions will not be solicited from the audience that evening. However, there will be an opportunity for community members to meet candidates following the event.

Judges elected to the York County Court of Common Pleas hear major civil and criminal cases, in addition to deciding cases that involve adoption, divorce, child custody, abuse, juvenile delinquency, estates, guardianships, charitable organizations and many other matters. The May 19 primary vote will determine which four candidates continue on to the November polls, at which time two Judges will be elected to the Common Pleas courts to serve 10-year terms.
For more information, contact library staff at 235-5806. The Paul Smith Library of Southern York County is located at 80 Constitution Avenue, Shrewsbury.

You are then ready to check out a variety of materials and use our wealth of resources for free.”

“Sharing items instead of buying makes great ‘cents’ in this economic environment,” she adds. “Consider the cost of a book, a magazine on the newsstand, or a monthly fee for Internet Access. Using those items through the library can really help stretch your dollars.”

As an added service, the libraries collectively offer thousands of movies at a budget-friendly cost of $2 per rental. Some locations are starting to offer video games for rent as well. Available titles for books, movies, video games, and music can all be found on the York County Libraries website at http://www.yorklibraries.org/. Regardless of which of the thirteen locations an item is housed, it can be reserved online and delivered to the library of choice.

Libraries also offer a wide range of free programs for children, teens, and adults. These include everything from story times, to book discussions, to art exhibits, to summer reading club. The funding will enable the York County Library System and YorkArts to jointly provide an art program at each of the 13 county libraries during the upcoming 2009 “Be Creative @ Your Library” Summer Reading Club. The hands-on art experience, provided as a result of the grant, will foster imagination and help children further understand a book’s storyline by making the featured tale multi-dimensional.

“This innovative approach to nurturing a love of reading in York’s children will be an excellent addition to our popular county-wide Summer Reading Club program,” says Martin Library Donor Relations Manager Karla Heberlig. “Last year, more than 13,000 children participated, and we expect even more this summer!”

Each summer, York County Libraries provide a wide variety of fun, educational activities aimed at keeping kids’ reading skills school-ready. As an encouragement, local businesses from across the county provide prizes as reading incentives. Registration for the 2009 Summer Reading Club begins Monday, June 1 at all library locations; directions can be found online at http://www.yorklibraries.org/. Specific dates and times for the York Arts programs at the libraries will be posted online this summer.

The York County Library System/YorkArts collaborative summer art project is supported by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency, through its regional arts funding partnership, Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts (PPA). State government funding for the arts depends upon an annual appropriation by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and support from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency. PPA is administered in this region by Jump Street.

Participants will listen to selected recordings and discuss Ellington's genius as expressed through his big band arrangements, piano style and compositions. Ridley will explain how Ellington's remarkable achievements earned him a reputation not only as a great jazz musician, but also as a great American composer.

Ridley is one of Philadelphia's best known jazz specialists (though he prefers to characterize the music as "this music referred to as jazz," or simply, "the positive music."
A self-taught historian, Ridley has spent more than 40 years acquiring an expert knowledge of his subject before becoming an instructor at Temple University in undergraduate and graduate studies. His courses cover a wide range of music, including folk music of the Caribbean and South America, work songs, and popular music of the United States.

He has hosted a popular jazz radio show, ‘The Historical Approach to the Positive Music,’ at Temple University’s WRTI-FM since 1976 and often turns to his own extensive library and collection, one of the largest documented in the Northeast, for material for his class and show. Ridley has also served as a consultant to the Library of Congress and is an archivist for the Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz and the Performing Arts.

This presentation is a program of the Pennsylvania Humanities Council, a Federal-State Partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities. It is being held at the Kreutz Creek Valley Library Center, 66 Walnut Springs Rd., Hellam, PA. It is free and open to the public. Please contact the library at 252 4080 to pre-register for this program. Registration is not necessary in order to attend, but is helpful to approximate audience size, as space is limited.
# # #

PHOTO ATTACHED
Available for interview

He received a fly tying kit as a teenager and has been practicing that hobby ever since, even building his own fly rod from components. He has participated in a number of entomology studies to identify the types of insects on which trout feed. His love of fishing has prompted him to carry a pack rod on almost every vacation and he has fished streams and lakes in more than a dozen different states. What he likes most about fly fishing is the total escape it provides in some of the most beautiful places on earth. “When I’m fishing that’s all I’m concentrating on, everything else just melts away,” he said.

When not on a stream, Knoch is Manager of Trail Development in the Northeast Regional Office of the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy. He also has serves as Chairman of the York County Rail Trail Authority. He holds a BS and MBA from Penn State. Knoch and his wife, Anne, and their Golden Retrievers, Samantha and Lucy, live in New Freedom.

To sign up for the event, please call or stop by the library at 80 Constitution Avenue, Shrewsbury, PA, (717) 235-4313. Each of the winning libraries will receive a one-time award of $5,000. The grants are funded by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation and implemented by the ALA.

With the grant funding, Martin Library will add additional English as a Second Language (ESL) learning materials to our highly popular ESL collection. Currently, we offer approximately 370 ESL resources for native Spanish and Arabic speakers, and there exists a great demand for supplementary foreign language resources. In the first month of 2008, the circulation of these learning materials has surpassed that of any month in 2007. The increasing demand of our existing ESL collection indicates the projected success of the ESL collection expansion.

Martin Library maintains a close relationship with the School District of the City of York, supplying resources to more than 1,000 English language learners and their families in the school district who represent more than 20 countries and 10 languages, and the York County Literacy Council, which served 621 adult ESL students speaking 39 foreign languages last year. Students and their families from both the school district and the York County Literacy Council, have access to our library’s entire collection and will greatly benefit from additional ESL resources. To view items within our ESL collection, please visit the library or our website: www.yorklibraries.org.

As the district library center for both York and Adams counties, items from Martin Library’s collection are available for checkout to more than 500,000 people. As the York population continues to grow in size and diversity, Martin Library meets changing needs through quality and service innovations. Additional ESL learning resources will make an immediate impact on our ability to serve our growing, diverse community while empowering all learners to become responsible, productive citizens.

The funded libraries represent communities in 18 states – Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin - ranging from large urban areas to small, rural towns. Each library demonstrated a need to provide literacy services to adult immigrants and a need to expand and/or add resources and services for adult English language learners. A complete list of the winning libraries is available at www.ala.org.

Public libraries have long been a cornerstone of the American dream, providing equal access to information. It is one of the first places to which many immigrants turn for help in learning to read, write and speak English.

“As a longtime supporter of literacy and education, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation is proud to fund the ‘American Dream’ grant initiative,” said Rick Dreiling, Dollar General’s CEO. “Public libraries are in a unique position to directly reach immigrants and help them assimilate into a new community. These grants will enable local libraries to provide the English language literacy services most needed in their area.”

The National Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL) recently found that 11 million U.S. adults or approximately one in 20, most of whom are immigrants, have such limited English skills that they can’t read a newspaper, understand the directions for medication or help their children with schoolwork. “The American Dream Starts @ your library” grant was founded by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation and ALA to meet the growing demand for English language literacy services.

About the American Library Association
The American Library Association is the oldest and largest library association in the world, with more than 65,000 members. Its mission is to promote the highest quality library and information services and public access to information. For more information visit www.ala.org.

About Dollar General
Dollar General is a leading discount retailer with more than 8,000 neighborhood stores.
