চাকরিপ্রার্থীদের একটি অংশ পরীক্ষা পেছানোর দাবি জানালেও সরকারি কর্ম কমিশন (পিএসসি) জানিয়েছে, পূর্ব ঘোষণা অনুযায়ী ১৯ মার্চেই ৪১তম বিসিএসের প্রিলিমিনারি পরীক্ষা নেওয়ার সিদ্ধান্ত আছে। এখন পর্যন্ত পরীক্ষা পেছানোর কোনো সিদ্ধান্ত নেই।

পিএসসির চেয়ারম্যান মো. সোহরাব হোসাইন আজ সোমবার প্রথম আলোকে বলেন, কমিশনের সিদ্ধান্ত অনুযায়ী কঠোর স্বাস্থ্যবিধি অনুসরণ করে ১৯ মার্চ এই পরীক্ষা নেওয়া হবে। এখন পর্যন্ত এই সিদ্ধান্তই আছে।

মুন্সীগঞ্জের লৌহজং উপজেলার এক বাসিন্দা (৬২) থাকেন ঢাকার ওয়ারিতে। গত শুক্রবার গ্রামের বাড়ি এসে করোনাভাইরাসের কারণে ১০/১৫ জন দুস্থের মাঝে ত্রাণসামগ্রী বিতরণ করেন। তখন ছিলেন একদম সুস্থ। ঢাকায় ফিরে গিয়ে হঠাৎ জ্বর, সর্দি ও শ্বাসকষ্টে আক্রান্ত হন। করোনার উপসর্গ দেখা দিলেও তিনি একে খুব একটা পাত্তা দেননি, যাননি হাসপাতালে।

কিন্তু গত সোমবার সকাল ৭টার দিকে মারা যান তিনি। করোনাভাইরাসে আক্রান্ত হয়ে মৃত্যু সন্দেহের খবর পেয়ে ঢাকার বাসায় ওয়ারী থানার পুলিশ আসে। পুলিশ আত্মীয়স্বজনকে বাসায় ঢুকতে দেননি বলে জানান মৃতের ভাই।

২০১৯-এনকোভি - যা নভেল করোনা ভাইরাস নামে পরিচিত - সাম্প্রতিক সময়ে গণমাধ্যমের শিরোনামে প্রাধান্য বিস্তার করেছে। এশিয়ার বিভিন্ন অংশ এবং এর বাইরেও দ্রুত ছড়িয়ে পড়ছে এই ভাইরাস। সাধারণ সতর্কতা অবলম্বন করে আপনি এই ভাইরাসটির সংক্রমণ ও বিস্তারের ঝুঁকি কমিয়ে আনতে পারেন।

কতটা ভয়ংকর এই ভাইরাস?

শ্বাসতন্ত্রের অন্যান্য অসুস্থতার মতো এই ভাইরাসের ক্ষেত্রেও সর্দি, কাশি, গলা ব্যথা এবং জ্বরসহ হালকা লক্ষণ দেখা দিতে পারে । কিছু মানুষের জন্য এই ভাইরাসের সংক্রমণ মারাত্মক হতে পারে। এর ফলে নিউমোনিয়া, শ্বাসকষ্ট এবং অর্গান বিপর্যয়ের মতো ঘটনাও ঘটতে পারে। তবে খুব কম ক্ষেত্রেই এই রোগ মারাত্মক হয়। এই ভাইরাস সংক্রমণের ফলে বয়স্ক ও আগে থেকে অসুস্থ ব্যক্তিদের মারাত্মকভাবে অসুস্থ হওয়ার ঝুঁকি বেশি।

আমার কি মেডিক্যাল মাস্ক পরা উচিত?

করোনা ভাইরাসসহ অন্যান্য রোগের বিস্তার সীমিত পর্যায়ে রাখতে মেডিক্যল মাস্ক সাহায্য করে। তবে এটার ব্যবহারই এককভাবে সংক্রমণ হ্রাস করতে যথেষ্ঠ নয়। নিয়মিত হাত ধোয়া এবং সম্ভাব্য সংক্রমিত ব্যক্তির সাথে মেলামেশা না করা এই ভাইরাস সংক্রমণের ঝুঁকি কমানোর সর্বোত্তম উপায়।

শিশুরা কি ঝুঁকিতে?

যে কোন বয়সের মানুষই এই ভাইরাসে আক্রান্ত হতে পারে। তবে একটি বিষয় লক্ষ্যণীয় যে, করোনা ভাইরাসে আক্রান্ত শিশুদের ক্ষেত্রে এখনও পর্যন্ত কোনও হতাহতের খবর পাওয়া যায়নি। প্রধানত: আগে থেকে অসুস্থ বয়স্ক ব্যক্তিদের ক্ষেত্রে এই ভাইরাস মারাত্মক হতে পারে।

তবে শহরাঞ্চলের দরিদ্র শিশুদের ক্ষেত্রে এই ভাইরাসের পরোক্ষ প্রভাব রয়েছে। এসব প্রভাবের মধ্যে রয়েছে বিদ্যালয় বন্ধ থাকা, যা সম্প্রতি মঙ্গোলিয়ায় দেখা গেছে।

Cardiff City's hopes of Premier League survival are hanging by the thinnest of threads after Ryan Babel's beautiful curling strike consigned them to defeat at already-relegated Fulham.

Chances were scarce in a disjointed first half which included a long delay as Fulham's Denis Odoi was taken off on a stretcher after he was accidentally kicked in the head by his team-mate Maxime Le Marchand.

The entertainment improved after the break, with both sides playing with greater urgency and creating several chances to score before Babel struck with a brilliant first-time effort from 20 yards to break Cardiff hearts.

Neil Warnock's side rallied with a flurry of late efforts on goal which prompted a string of fine saves from Fulham goalkeeper Diego Rico - but those exertions proved in vain.

Cardiff remain 18th in the Premier League table, three points behind Brighton - and with a goal difference 14 worse than the Seagulls - with only two games to play this season.

Therefore, the Bluebirds could effectively be relegated - barring a staggering sequence of results and swing in goal difference - if Brighton beat Newcastle in Saturday's late kick-off.

Cardiff's valiant effort in vain

Written off at the start of the season, and dealt several setbacks over the course of the campaign, Cardiff seem to have been clinging on to their Premier League status for what seems like an age.

They simply would not go away - a pugnacious outfit built in the image of their manager Warnock, unwilling to follow Fulham by making an instant return to the Championship.

However, this result might mean the Bluebirds will be unable to avoid that fate.

As ever, they battled valiantly and defended diligently but, as has often been the case this season, they lacked the quality to really trouble their opponents.

Set-pieces seemed Cardiff's likeliest route to a goal as they struggled to conjure the kind of nous and touch required to fashion scoring opportunities in open play.

With Storm Hannah still making itself felt with blustery winds around Craven Cottage, the Welsh side looked to exploit the conditions by sending a series of free-kicks and throws swirling into the Fulham box.

Following one free-kick launched from the halfway line by Lee Peltier, captain Sean Morrison was manhandled by Aleksandar Mitrovic but had his appeals for a penalty ignored by referee Chris Kavanagh.

It was not until they fell behind that Cardiff truly threatened, Junior Hoilett hitting the crossbar with one effort before Morrison and Danny Ward forced Rico into action.

But by then the writing was already on the wall.

Cardiff confounded expectations by winning promotion in the first place and, even by Warnock and his players' odds-defying standards, avoiding relegation from their current predicament would be an escape act of Houdini proportions.

Fulham's schadenfreude

These two sides were adversaries before they were locked in this battle to avoid relegation, having both vied for automatic promotion from the Championship last season.

Fulham were widely regarded as the neutrals' choice with their aesthetically-pleasing style. However, it was Cardiff who prevailed with their less attractive but ultimately more effective approach, with Fulham eventually promoted via the play-offs.

That clash of styles prompted a fair bit of debate - and bickering - between the two sets of fans and, while most of it was good natured, there was a sense at Craven Cottage that Fulham's supporters wanted their side to drag Cardiff down to the second tier with them.

They had reason to be confident of doing so because, after their relegation was confirmed on 2 April following a ninth successive defeat, the Cottagers actually won their matches against Everton and Bournemouth.

On this occasion, they initially reverted to the kind of form which saw them sink into the bottom three; struggling to play with any fluency as they seemed unsettled by Cardiff's uncompromising approach.

The home side improved in the second half and, after Mitrovic squandered a handful of chances, Babel sent his dipping, arcing 20-yard shot over the despairing dive of Neil Etheridge to give interim manager Scott Parker a third successive victory.

If anyone was in any doubt about how much Fulham's fans enjoyed beating Cardiff and contributing to their probable relegation, they offered an unequivocal answer in the form of their gleeful chant: "You're going down with the Fulham."

Cardiff goalkeeper Neil Etheridge: "We had our chances. It is a tough one to take. Both teams were tentative and we came out on the wrong end of it.

"We stayed in the game throughout. A fantastic strike broke the deadlock, we had our chances but could not take them.

"We felt we had to get something from the game, we haven't. It was never in our hands. but we are in it at the end."

Irish Open: Rory McIlroy no-show 'a sign of the times' says Paul McGinley

Paul McGinley says Rory McIlroy's decision not to compete in this year's Irish Open is "a sign of the times".

The 2014 European Ryder Cup captain is the host for this year's event at Lahinch and admits he is disappointed by the 29-year-old's absence.

While the world number four will be missing, Ian Poulter is the latest player to commit to the 4-7 July event.

"It was (a disappointment) but this is something we're going to see more of going forward," said McGinley.

"The challenges the players have on the world schedule are huge. The amount of money they play for around the world is huge and the focus is very much going to be on major championships and I think it's just a sign of the times.

"He (McIlroy) is not the only one, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka and Tiger Woods as well - look at his schedule right through his career - they don't play a huge amount and they define everything around the major championships."

McIlroy is skipping his national open to focus on his preparations for The Open at Royal Portrush a fortnight later.

A number of high-profile players will however travel to the west of Ireland for this year's Irish Open, including major winners Louis Oosthuizen, Danny Willett and Padraig Harrington.

But McGinley says the tournament can no longer expect to attract all of the biggest names, adding: "The days of old when Seve, Faldo, Langer, Woosie and all the top players played in an Irish Open, those days are gone.

"Any tournament around the world, even on the PGA Tour, outside the majors, the WGC events and the Players (Championship), if you have two or three or four of the big names and then you fit around the guys who are top 50 in the world around that and then the rest of the tour well that's a very good field.

"That's what we're on course to do and hopefully we're going to get there, we're pretty close to it at the moment."

Sri Lanka attacks: Bomber 'studied in UK and Australia'

One of the attackers behind the Sri Lankan Easter Sunday bombings once studied in the United Kingdom, officials say, as more details emerge on the bombers. A senior Whitehall official told the BBC that he visited south-east England in 2006-7 to study but did not complete a full university degree.

The attacker later took a course in Australia, said the deputy minister of defense of Sri Lanka. The death toll has risen to 359, injuring over 500 people. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said the blasts may be associated with the Islamic State (IS) group. IS said they carried out the attacks that targeted churches and high-end hotels, although they did not provide direct evidence of their involvement.
In another development, Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena replaced Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando and took steps to sack the Inspector General of Police, Pujith Jayasundara.

What do we know about the attackers?

A Whitehall official confirmed the name of the bomber who had visited the UK as Abdul Latif Jamil Mohammed.

Sri Lankan Deputy Defence Minister Ruwan Wijewardene said the attacker had gone on to do "his postgraduate in Australia before coming back to settle in Sri Lanka".

Confirmation that he studied in the UK in the mid-2000s would tend to cast doubt on the likelihood of his being radicalised so long ago, says the BBC's Security Correspondent Frank Gardner.

It also points to his being in his early to mid-30s at the time of the attacks, our correspondent adds.

Mr Wijewardene added that most of the attackers had been "well educated and come from... middle or upper middle class" families.

"They are financially quite independent and their families are quite stable financially," he said.

Two of the bombers are reportedly brothers and the sons of a wealthy Colombo spice trader. They detonated their explosives at the Shangri-La and the Cinnamon Grand hotels, police sources told the AFP news agency.

The announcement that most of the attackers were "well educated" and "middle class" is not as surprising as it sounds.

Although poverty and lack of opportunities have steered many down a path to terrorism, there are also numerous examples of individuals abandoning a relatively comfortable lifestyle for a violent cause.

Ziad Jarrah, one of the 9/11 attackers who hijacked United Airlines flight 93, came from a privileged Lebanese family. More recently, there have been cases of British jihadists who have worked for the NHS, including doctors.

The late IS executioner Mohammed Emwazi, aka "Jihadi John", attended the University of Westminster in London. And the original co-founder of al-Qaeda, Osama Bin Laden, chose to leave behind a luxurious life in Jeddah to go and fight the Soviets in Afghanistan during the 1980s.

Sri Lanka's government has blamed the blasts on local Islamist group National Thowheed Jamath (NTJ) but Mr Wickremesinghe said the attacks "could not have been done just locally".

"There had been training given and a co-ordination which we are not seeing earlier," he said.

Police have now detained around 60 suspects in connection with the attack. A state of emergency remains in effect to prevent further attacks.

The nearly simultaneous attacks targeted three churches packed for Easter services and three major hotels in the capital, Colombo.

An attack on a fourth hotel on Sunday was foiled, Mr Wickremesinghe said. He also warned that further militants and explosives could still be "out there" following the attack.

One of the targeted hotels, the Kingsbury, has now reopened.

The country remains tense with police still looking for suspects and possible further explosives.

Two controlled explosions of suspect packages were carried out on Wednesday, including one near a popular cinema in Colombo.

Cautioning about "ongoing terrorist plots in the country", US envoy to Sri Lanka Alaina Teplitz told reporters that terrorists could "strike without warning".

Who could be behind the attacks?

IS said online that it had "targeted nationals of the crusader alliance [anti-IS US-led coalition] and Christians in Sri Lanka".

It provided no evidence for the claim but shared an image on social media of eight men purported to be behind the attack.

The group's last territory fell in March, but even then experts had warned it does not mean the end of IS or its ideology.

Mr Wijewardene has also told parliament that NTJ was linked to another radical Islamist group he named as JMI. He gave no further details.

He also said "preliminary investigations" indicated that the bombings were in retaliation for deadly attacks on mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, in March.

NTJ has no history of large-scale attacks but came to prominence last year when it was blamed for damaging Buddhist statues. The group has not said it carried out Sunday's bombings.

The Sri Lankan government is facing scrutiny after it emerged the authorities were warned about a possible attack.

Security services had been monitoring the NTJ but the prime minister and the cabinet were not warned, ministers said.

On Tuesday, President Sirisena promised "stern action" over the failure to pass on the warnings and said he would restructure the country's police and security services.

Who were the victims?

The first mass funeral took place on Tuesday, as Sri Lanka marked the victim's official day of mourning. Most of those who died were nationals of Sri Lanka, including scores of Christians attending church services on Easter Sunday. Among the dead were some 38 foreign nationals, with another 14 unaccounted for.

At least eight British citizens and at least 11 Indian citizens are included in the death toll. At St Sebastian's church in Negombo, north of Colombo, one of the places targeted in Sunday's blasts, the mass funeral for about 30 victims took place. Another late Tuesday funeral service was scheduled. There was also a moment of silence on Tuesday at 08:30 reflecting the time the first of six bombs detonated.

Both cameras easily crest the 40-megapixel hill, but the Lumix S1R pushes well beyond it to just over 47MP, giving it a 5MP lead over the Sony A7R III.Not really, but that's something. The bigger difference is how the two cameras use high-resolution pixel-shift modes that use sensor-shift stabilization systems to move the sensor in a box pattern by a pixel width, take multiple exposures and combine them into one for a super-resolution photograph.

By taking just four images, the A7R III accomplishes this, enough to capture full RGB color data at each pixel location. This can dramatically reduce moiré chances, reduce noise, and bring out more detail — especially in red and blue areas (read more about sensor color filters if you're curious about how it works). The A7R III, unfortunately, can not combine these four in camera exposures

The Lumix S1R takes a step further pixel-shift by capturing a total of eight exposures, sufficient not only to obtain full RGB data, but also to increase the pixel count to a stunning 187MP. You will not find a full-frame camera capable of capturing more detail. Moreover, it combines the separate images in the camera into a single RAW file that can be opened in Adobe Lightroom, Capture One or any other supplies .

However, high-resolution mode is not all. It requires a tripod and a non-moving subject, so for handheld work, portraits, wildlife photos, etc., the S1R does not hold a big lead. But it really can't beat for landscape photographers.

SPEEDs

Both cameras perform at high ISO admirably, and while the Sony has the higher ISO maximum setting, the performance of the real world is very similar. These are both excellent sensors, and either way you can't go wrong, but for its higher quality and easier pixel-shift mode, the Lumix takes the win here.

With the A7R III topping out at 10 frames per second and the Lumix S1R just 1 fps behind it, both cameras are close in terms of burst rate. However, when you need it, the A7R III loses live view at that speed, forcing you to 8 fps. The Lumix S1R has a live view, but there is no continuous autofocus at 9 fps— if you need it, you'll need to drop to 6 fps. Bear in mind Neither of these cameras is advertised as sport photography machines in line with the Sony A9, but the ability of Sony to focus continuously at 10 fps gives it a slight edge here.

Winner: A7R III from Sony

AUTOPOSITION

The A7R III uses a rapid and accurate 399-point phase detection system, including in continuous mode. The S1R uses a system for contrast detection, divided into 225 zones.Usually contrast detection is much slower than phase detection, but with its proprietary Defocus Depth (DFD) technology, Panasonic takes a different approach to it. This dramatically improves performance and has usually been as fast as phase detection systems in our experience. However, it doesn't always work, and we have sometimes had problems with focus hunting Also, continuous autofocus does not match phase detection systems, although face and eye detection worked very well. In low light, it is also impressively good, with sensitivity down to-6 EV. The S1R is almost perfect for static subjects in still photography. The A7R III has the most reliable autofocus for moving subjects and video.

Winner: A7R III from Sony

DESIGN

With the battery charged, the Lumix S1R is by far the heavier and larger of the two, weighing in at more than 2 pounds. But if you can get over the weight, it provides the most functional and complete control layout of any mirrorless camera that we've ever tested ; by comparison, the A7R III looks spares.

While both cameras claim to have sealed the environment, the S1R certainly feels like the two's more durable. It also boasts the market's highest-resolution electronic viewfinder with 5.7 million pixels— 2 million more than the A7R III. Also, the 3.2-inch, 2.1-million-dot screen is larger and higher than the 3-inch, 1.44-million-dot screen from Sony.

Both cameras offer dual memory card slots, but the S1R gives you one SD and one XQD where the A7R III uses both SD cards.

Winner: S1R from Lumix

STABILIZATION

Both cameras use 5-axis sensor-shift stabilization when handholding to counter camera movement, and both do a very good job in both still and video mode. Stabilization of the A7R III is rated for 5.5 shake reduction stops, where the S1R is good for 6 — or 6.5 in combination with an optically stabilized lens. It's not a big difference, but here the Lumix is taking another win.

Video

As a video company, both Sony and Panasonic are well known. Sony was one of the first to put 4 K into a mirrorless camera, and the GH series of Panasonic (built on the smaller Micro Four Thirds format) continues to show us some of the best video cameras you can buy. But the Lumix S1R does not really target the same audience. In fact, even in the S series, when it comes to video, the S1R falls behind the cheaper Lumix S1.

That's not to say it's not capable; it's capable of shooting 4 K resolution up to 60 fps, where the A7R III is up to 30. That's its only advantage, though, and all 4 K video is recorded from a slightly cropped sensor region and without over-sampling, so quality won't stack up to some other cameras. The A7R III is capable of shooting both full-width 4 K and oversampled Super 35 4 K (which crops from an area of APS-C size), giving you a choice between a broader perspective or maximum detail. It also incorporates the different image profiles of Sony, including S-Log, a logarithmic tone curve that preserves a higher dynamic range. Internal recording is still restricted to 4:2:0 8-bit, so the A7R III is not the best. But if you're still a video-dabbling photographer, it will deliver what you need.

BATTERY LIFE

Compared to their DSLR counterparts, mirrorless cameras are suffering when it comes to battery life. The Lumix S1R manages a paltry 360 shots per charge based on CIPA ratings, even with its huge 3,050mAh battery. Keep in mind that it has to power an EVF of 5.7 million pixels, which probably attracts a lot of power, so it can be a fair deal. But before exhausting its battery, the Sony will take you through some 650 photos, again based on CIPA ratings (real world performance for both cameras may be much better).

Panasonic built in a special Power Save Live View Finder (LVF) shooting mode, perhaps because its engineers realized how much power the S1R was going to consume, which somehow mimics how a DSLR manages power. In this mode, after a short time, the camera will go to sleep, but some functions will remain active, such as the EVF eye sensor and shutter button. In this mode, battery life is reported as more than 1,000 exposures. We still call this one in favor of Sony, but whatever camera you choose, we recommend that you pick up one or two spare batteries.

Winner: A7R III from Sony

LENSES

Sony's E-mount is part of a much more mature system than the Panasonic S series, so at this time there are quite a few more native lenses. However, the S1R is built around the Leica L mount, which already has a full compatible (if expensive— they're made by Leica after all) collection of lenses. Sigma also signed on to develop L-mount lenses, with 11 of their acclaimed Art-series lenses on the way. As of this moment, Sony is ahead — but in the next twelve months, things will look a lot different. This one is too close to calling, but it's a good idea to check before you buy into it if a system has any specific lenses you want.

Winner: Tie

PICKING AN OVERALL WINNER

In the product names of both these cameras you may have noticed the R; that means resolution. And when it comes to resolution, the Lumix S1R simply doesn't beat. Its 47MP sensor outperforms the Sony slightly for normal photography, but takes a giant leap forward in high-resolution mode, offering 187MP, about four times the normal resolution. It's also the two's more durable and professional, with an absolutely fantastic EVF and control layout.

But in some areas, such as continuous shooting speed and video features, the Sony still comes out ahead. It is also significantly cheaper (especially at the time of writing with current instant rebates), which means you can save some money for a nice lens. If money isn't an object, we may lean slightly towards the S1R, but it's hard to argue that the A7R III doesn't give you more value for your dollar.

Down to Shop is a mobile shopping network tongue-in-cheek

Cyrus Summerlin and Max Hellerstein, who previously created the Push for Pizza app (which allowed users to order a pizza by pressing a button), are launching their new start-up today, Down to Shop, officially. The app bills itself as both a modern QVC reinvention and a "funny way to shop." It enables users to watch funny videos featuring products that can be purchased directly from the app.

In an email, Hellerstein said that from dissatisfaction with existing advertising and e-commerce, the pair created Down to Shop. Summerlin described it as "a platform for hypermedia trade." "We've created a self-conscious, fun and entertaining, interactive environment that gets customers to engage with brands like never before — because they want to," Summerlin said. "What an idea! ”

To do this, Down to Shop says it has recruited a creative team of alumni from the Upright Citizens Brigade and influencers from Instagram to star in their shows that are written, filmed and edited in Los Angeles studios of the startup. (The creative side is supervised by Walid Mohammad.) The content is built around four-week seasons, with daily episodes spanning five seasons.

Can't say that we haven't seen this coming. Four days from the official release date of the Galaxy Fold, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal, Samsung is pushing things back a bit, There is no firm launch time frame, although at some point in May the phone is still expected "in the coming weeks." For comment, we have contacted Samsung and will update accordingly.

When a number reported dysfunctional displays among an extremely small sample size, a number of reviewers gave the company no doubt a pause. citing "people familiar with the matter."

I haven't experienced any problems with my own device yet, but I can't ignore this kind of thing. The initial response of Samsung appeared to be aimed at mitigating push back, writing, "A limited number of early Galaxy Fold samples were provided for review by the media. We received some reports on the main display on the provided samples. We will inspect these units thoroughly in person in order to determine the cause of the issue.

It also went on to note that the problems may have arisen from users trying to peel back a "protective layer." Things turned to the more cautious over the weekend, however, when it was reported that the phone's launch events would be delayed in parts of Asia (we also reached out about that, but have not heard back). A bigger delay has seemed inevitable since then.

The Huawei P30 Pro packs in the best still camera, but it also has some flaws.

Huawei’s P30 Pro, which has been launched in India at Rs 71,990 is a premium Android smartphone like no other. It packs in the latest Android software, has plenty of “AI” tags to its branding and has an arsenal of lenses that will make you forget your DSLR on your next vacation.

I used the smartphone for a week and there’s plenty of improvements not just over its predecessor, the P20 Pro, but the Mate 20 Pro as well.

More importantly, at its asking price, it almost makes the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus look redundant and gives Google’s Pixel 3 XL a tough fight in the only area it's good at, that Portrait mode.

The Huawei P30 Pro is not perfect, and that display notch with its not-so-secure 2D face unlock will find those looking bezel-less smartphone designs, looking the other way. Then there’s any Huawei smartphone’s biggest pain point, the rather dated software. It’s boring, looks old and needs a serious revamp. If Samsung can pull it off and take complete U-turn with One UI, I am pretty sure Huawei is quite capable of pulling off the same.

Despite the Huawei P30 Pro’s flaws, I still dig it and here’s why.

One camera for every occasion
Going by the sheer number of cameras, it’s obvious, that imaging is the highlight of the P30 Pro.

With so many cameras available, there’s literally one for every occasion.

On a vacation up in the mountains, that ultra-wide angle lens can shoot some breath-taking photos.

At a rock show and need to get closer to the action on stage? If that 5X optical zoom does not suffice you can still get a pretty good image, even at 30X, using that 20 MP sensor.

And for regular shots, there’s 48 MP camera that takes care of everything from bokehlicious portraits to the best low light shots one can imagine.

Huawei has improved the processing and treatment of the images drastically, even over the recent Mate 20 Pro!

They are still a wee bit low on resolved details when compared to the Google Pixel 3 but it has low light capabilities that beat the competition by a mile. The Pixel 3 still clicks great Portrait shots but I prefer the less artificial background blur on P30 Pro. If you check out my detailed camera comparison, it’s easy to point out how close the P30 comes to the Pixel when it comes to shooting portraits. At times, it’s even better than the Pixel.

While the quality of these shots are top-notch, they do vary depending on the camera or the lens you end up using.

And switching from the standard 1X lens to the 0.6X ultra-wide angle lens will suddenly see the white-balance shift drastically. The same can be said about the switch to the telephoto lens which becomes a problem when you do the same while shooting video. Moreover, the shift is not as smooth but more like a jump cut transition and could certainly do with a bit of polish.

Video is a drastic improvement over the Mate 20 Pro and the P20 Pro but is not the best I have seen from smartphones this year. While 1080p 30 fps and 60 fps videos looked fine, 4K at 30 fps had a stuttering problem when panning. Stabilisation on the selfie camera was pretty good, but the focus was a bit jittery in dim light shooting scenarios like a pub. Samsung does a better job when compared to Android smartphones but I’d still pick the iPhone XR or the XS if all I wanted to shoot was video.

Interesting design choices made here

Since the design is a really subjective topic, I showed the P30 Pro to my colleagues in the office and a majority of them liked the design. While I personally found the Breathing Crystal colour quite attractive and premium, considering that it gives out an almost jade-like look and feel, others did find it looking a bit “Chinese”.

My favourite is the Amber Red, but sadly that finish will not make it to India. The Aurora finish looks good as well and as a Huawei representative explained to me, the Amber Red, Breathing Crystal, Pearl White, Aurora and Black colours are supposed to represent the colours of the sky from sunrise to the dark of night. Interesting stuff!

Looks aside, the rear 3D-curved glass screen unlike the front, like every other Huawei flagship in the past, is a fingerprint magnet. It gets smudged up quite easily, but thankfully, these are easy to wipe off this time around.

The fit and finish are near perfect with no sharp edges or corners, just that the phone is a bit thick and does get a bit difficult to hold depending on the feature that you are using at that given moment.

I’m glad that Huawei skipped on the USB port speaker on the Mate 20 Pro, but was a bit disappointed that a phone this large and chunky did not pack in two.

Despite its flattened out top and bottom edges, I was a bit surprised that the smartphone did not stand straight up on its bottom edge, but could stand up on its top edge. Is the design not perfectly balanced?

And then there’s that notched display

The display on the P30 Pro is not as sharp as the one on the Mate 20 Pro which featured QHD+ unit. To the naked eye and the casual user, it is quite hard to tell that Huawei used a FHD+ display but it has its benefits.

The lower resolution display means that there is lesser stress on the GPU, which also means better battery savings. And despite using a slightly bigger display than the Mate 20 Pro and the same chipset and battery combo, the battery life saving is drastically different. So yes, the move to FHD+ is beneficial in more ways than one.

As for the display itself, it's top class, but there are a few optimisation problems.

I liked that the colours are not as punchy as the Mate using the Natural colour profile and that it is bright enough for outdoor viewing since you will be using this smartphone to click photos outdoors.

What I did not like was the palm rejection, which accidentally pauses videos, scrubs across the zoom controls when using the camera and does other things even though your digits are barely touching the skinny bezels around the edges of the device. Indeed, this can be fixed via a software update, but it is a bit annoying.

And then there’s that notch, which almost every premium smartphone maker has been trying to avoid. It's way smaller than the one on the iPhone XS, and even smaller than the Galaxy S10 Plus’ hole-punch. But it’s not as distracting as a regular wider notch so I won’t count it as a negative.

The in-display fingerprint reader unlike the fidgety ultrasonic unit on the Galaxy S10 Plus actually works quite well so I did not need to use the 2D face unlock system on the phone.

Fast, but downright boring software

EMUI has got a few updates with the P30 Pro, there are subtle cosmetic changes like new icons and deeper down a new file system that according to Huawei makes the phone up to 20 percent faster than the older ones.

In day to day use, the phone did feel fluid and fast even compared the Mate 20 Pro, despite the amount of bloatware that Huawei loads on to it smartphones with duplicate apps.

Huawei's software may have changed under the hood, but nothing has changed cosmetically.

It’s almost like my appreciation for custom Android skins has grown over the standard stock vanilla interface that the Pixel devices offer these days. This is more because of the customisation options (theming, UI navigation, gaming optimisations etc.) that you get, something that Android Q is expected to bring in the next milestone update but currently does not offer. Android is about customisation and the current Pixel software is anything but customisable when it comes to navigation and the user interface (not themes).

But EMUI still looks dated and downright boring in comparison to Samsung’s One UI, which lends a modern minimalistic look for Samsung’s multitude of smartphones. Here’s hoping that the next Huawei phone packs in something refreshing and new for once.

More than 200 killed in Sri Lanka attacks

At least 207 people have been killed and 450 hurt in explosions at churches and hotels in Sri Lanka, police say.

Eight blasts were reported, including at three churches in Negombo, Batticaloa and Colombo's Kochchikade district during Easter services.

The Shangri-La, Kingsbury and Cinnamon Grand hotels and one other, all in the capital, were also targeted.

A national curfew has been put in place "until further notice" and social media networks have been temporarily blocked.

A foreign ministry official has said at least 27 foreign nationals are among the dead.

Reports say seven people have been arrested, but it not yet clear who is responsible for the attacks.

Sri Lanka's defence minister has said the attacks were probably carried out by one group.

What's the latest from the scene?

The first reports of explosions came at about 08:45 (03:15 GMT) local time - with six blasts reported close together at churches and luxury hotels.

St Sebastian's church in Negombo was severely damaged in one explosion, with dozens killed at the site.

Images from inside showed blood on the pews and the building's ceiling shattered.

There were also heavy casualties at the site of the first blast in St Anthony's, a hugely popular shrine in Kochchikade, a district of Colombo.

Robert Tyler, who has lived in Sri Lanka for six years, told the BBC that at least two of the hotels appeared to have had their restaurants targeted at a busy time for breakfast.

A seventh explosion later hit near the zoo in Dehiwala, southern Colombo, and an eighth explosion was reported near the Colombo district of Dematagoda.

Media say it was suicide bomber and that three people, believed to be security personnel, were killed during a police raid.

Security has been stepped up at the country's main Bandaranaike International Airport.

Officials have said people will be able to travel to the airport under the curfew if they produce their boarding pass and identification at checkpoints.

Travellers are being advised to arrive at the airport four hours before their scheduled flight time.

Who are the victims?

The vast majority of those killed are thought to be Sri Lankan nationals, including dozens who were attending Easter church services.

At least five British people - including two with joint US citizenship - are believed to be among the dead.

Netherlands Foreign Minister Stef Blok confirmed in a statement that one Dutch national had been killed.

Two Turkish citizens have also been killed, state news agency Anadolu reports.

উড়োজাহাজটির পাইলট ইভান থমাস জানিয়েছেন, তারা যেরকম ধারণা করেছিলেন, সেভাবেই প্রথম ফ্লাইটটি শেষ হয়েছে। তিনি তার অভিজ্ঞতাকে ‘দারুণ’ বলে বর্ণনা করেছেন।

স্ট্রাটোলঞ্চ তাদের এই উড়োজাহাজকে বিশ্বের সবচেয়ে বড় বলে দাবি করছে ডানার দৈর্ঘ্য হিসাব করে। কিন্তু উড়োজাহাজের নাক থেকে লেজ পর্যন্ত দৈর্ঘ্যের বিবেচনায় এর চেয়ে বড় অনেক উড়োজাহাজ রয়েছে।

২০২০ সাল নাগাদ এই উড়োজাহাজ ব্যবহার করে স্যাটেলাইট উৎক্ষেপনের পরিকল্পনা রয়েছে নির্মাণ কোম্পানি স্ট্রাটোলঞ্চের।

রাজশাহী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের (রাবি) সমাজবিজ্ঞান বিভাগের অধ্যাপক ড. একেএম শফিউল ইসলাম লিলন হত্যা মামলায় তিনজনের ফাঁসির আদেশ দিয়েছেন আদালত। সোমবার সকালে রাজশাহী দ্রুত বিচার ট্রাইব্যুনালের বিচারক অনুপ কুমার রায় এ আদেশ দেন।

মৃত্যুদণ্ডপ্রাপ্তরা হলেন- আব্দুস সালাম পিন্টু, সবুজ ও আরিফুল ইসলাম মানিক। এদের মধ্যে সবুজ পলাতক। বাকি দুজন রায় ঘোষণার সময় আদালতে উপস্থিত ছিলেন। পিন্টু ও মানিক যুবদলের নেতা। মামলার বাকি আট আসামি বেকসুর খালাস পেয়েছেন।

এর আগে গত ৪ এপ্রিল এ মামলার যুক্তিতর্ক শেষে রায়ের জন্য ১৫ এপ্রিল দিন ধার্য করা হয়। গত ১৩ মার্চ মামলার সাক্ষ্যগ্রহণ শেষ হয়। মামলায় মোট ৩৩ জন সাক্ষী দিয়েছেন।

মামলা সূত্রে জানা যায়, ২০১৪ সালের ১৫ নভেম্বর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় সংলগ্ন চৌদ্দপাই এলাকায় নিজ বাড়ির সামনে কুপিয়ে হত্যা করা হয় ড. শফিউল ইসলামকে। পরদিন বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের রেজিস্ট্রার অধ্যাপক মুহাম্মদ এন্তাজুল হক বাদী হয়ে অজ্ঞাত কয়েকজনকে আসামি করে মতিহার থানায় হত্যা মামলা দায়ের করেন।

হত্যাকাণ্ডে জড়িত সন্দেহে ওই বছরেরই ২৩ নভেম্বর যুবদল নেতা আব্দুস সামাদ পিন্টুসহ ৬ জনকে আটক করে র‌্যাব। পরে পিন্টুর স্ত্রী নাসরিন আখতার রেশমাকে আটক করে গোয়েন্দা পুলিশ। হত্যাকাণ্ডের দায় স্বীকার করে রেশমা আদালতে ১৬৪ ধারায় স্বীকারোক্তিমূলক জবানবন্দিও দেন। এর এক বছর পর ২০১৫ সালের ৩০ নভেম্বর মামলার তদন্ত কর্মকর্তা রেজাউস সাদিক রাজশাহী জেলা যুবদলের আহ্বায়ক আনোয়ার হোসেন উজ্জলসহ ১১ জনের বিরুদ্ধে আদালতে চার্জশিট দাখিল করেন।

চার্জশিটে বলা হয়, বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের হিসাব শাখায় কর্মরত নাসরিন আখতারের সঙ্গে শফিউল ইসলামের দ্বন্দ্বের জের ধরেই তার স্বামী যুবদল নেতা আব্দুস সালাম পিন্টু সাঙ্গ-পাঙ্গ নিয়ে এ ঘটনা ঘটিয়েছেন। পরে নাসরিন আখতারও বিষয়টি স্বীকার করে আদালতে জবানবন্দি দেন। চার্জশিটে অভিযুক্ত আসামিরা হলেন- যুবদল নেতা আনোয়ার হোসেন উজ্জল, আব্দুস সালাম পিন্টু, পিন্টুর স্ত্রী নাসরিন আক্তার রেশমা, যুবদল নেতা আরিফুল ইসলাম মানিক, সবুজ শেখ, সিরাজুল ইসলাম কালু, আল-মামুন, সাগর, জিন্নাত ও আরিফ।

রোববার পান্তা-ইলিশ খেয়ে নববর্ষের সূচনা হয় কলকাতাস্থ বাংলাদেশ উপহাইকমিশনে। চলে নানান সাংস্কৃতিক অনুষ্ঠান। অনুষ্ঠানে অংশ নিতে এমন সাজ দুই শিশুর। ছবি: ভাস্কর মুখার্জিকলকাতাসহ গোটা পশ্চিমবঙ্গে আগামীকাল সোমবার উদ্‌যাপিত হবে বাংলা নববর্ষ ১৪২৬। তবে বাংলাদেশে নতুন দিনপঞ্জি চালু হওয়ার পর থেকে সেখানে কার্যত নববর্ষ পালিত হয়ে আসছে কলকাতার নববর্ষ পালনের কখনো এক দিন আগে; আবার কখনো একই দিন। যদিও ২০১৬ সালে একই দিনে দুই দেশে একই সঙ্গে পালিত হয়েছিল বাংলা নববর্ষ। কিন্তু এবার আবার সেই এক দিন আগে আজ রোববার বাংলাদেশের রীতি অনুযায়ী পালিত হচ্ছে বাংলা নববর্ষ। সেই লক্ষ্যে কলকাতার বাংলাদেশ উপহাইকমিশনে রোববার দিনটি পালিত হয় সাড়ম্বরে।

রোববার সকালে পান্তা-ইলিশ খেয়ে নববর্ষের সূচনা হয় কলকাতার বাংলাদেশ উপহাইকমিশনে। বিকেলে উপহাইকমিশনের উদ্যোগে বের হয় মঙ্গল শোভাযাত্রা। বিভিন্ন মুখোশ, ব্যানার, ফেস্টুন এবং চিরায়ত বাংলার নানা প্রতীক নিয়ে অনুষ্ঠিত হয় এই শোভাযাত্রা। বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান সরণির বাংলাদেশ গ্রন্থাগার থেকে শুরু হয় এই মঙ্গল শোভাযাত্রা। শেষ হয় উপহাইকমিশনে। এতে যোগ দেন উপহাইকমিশনের কর্মকর্তাসহ কলকাতার বিশিষ্টজনেরা। এরপরই কলকাতার বাংলাদেশ উপহাইকমিশন চত্বরে শুরু হয় বাংলা নববর্ষ উদ্‌যাপন উৎসব।

উৎসবে অতিথিদের স্বাগত জানান কলকাতায় নিযুক্ত বাংলাদেশের উপহাইকমিশনার তৌফিক হাসান। অনুষ্ঠানে কলকাতার বিভিন্ন দেশের কূটনীতিকসহ বিভিন্ন পেশার বিশিষ্টজনেরা উপস্থিত ছিলেন। অতিথিদের বাংলাদেশের নানান পদের খাবার দিয়ে আপ্যায়িত করা হয়। পিঠাপুলি, মুড়িমুড়কি থেকে নানা ধরনের বাংলাদেশের খাবার এবং মিষ্টি। উপহাইকমিশন চত্বরে আয়োজন করা হয় নাগরদোলার। সেই ব্রিটিশ আমলের বায়োস্কোপও দেখানো হয় এখানে। বহু মানুষ সেই বায়োস্কোপে ছবিও দেখেন। বিকেল থেকে রাত অবধি চলে নানান সাংস্কৃতিক অনুষ্ঠান। পুতুলনাচ, বাউলসংগীত, নৃত্য, সংগীতানুষ্ঠান, আবৃত্তি থেকে সাংস্কতিক অনুষ্ঠান। আর এতে যোগদান করে বংলাদেশ থেকে আসা একটি নৃত্য দল। কলকাতার বিভিন্ন শিক্ষাপ্রতিষ্ঠানে অধ্যয়নরত বাংলাদেশের ছাত্রছাত্রীরাও এই সাংস্কৃতিক অনুষ্ঠানে যোগ দেন।

সোমবার কলকাতায় বাংলা নববর্ষ উদযাপন ও মঙ্গল শোভাযাত্রা
আগামীকাল সোমবার কলকাতাসহ ভারতের বাংলাভাষী রাজ্য ও অঞ্চলে উদ্‌যাপিত হবে বাংলা নববর্ষ ১৪২৬। আর এই বাংলা নববর্ষকে ঘিরে এবারও কলকাতায় বের হচ্ছে মঙ্গল শোভাযাত্রা। ঢাকার মঙ্গল শোভাযাত্রা দেখে কলকাতায় ২০১৭ সাল থেকে শুরু হয়েছে এই মঙ্গল শোভাযাত্রা। কলকাতাবাসীও গত দুই বছর ধরে দেখেছেন মঙ্গল শোভাযাত্রা।

এত দিন ধরে কলকাতায় বাংলা নববর্ষ উদ্‌যাপনের রেওয়াজ থাকলেও গত ২০১৭ সাল প্রথম কলকাতার রাস্তায় বের হয়েছিল মঙ্গল শোভাযাত্রা। মঙ্গল শোভাযাত্রার কথা কলকাতার মানুষ শুনেছে ঢাকা থেকে। তাই তো ঢাকার অনুপ্রেরণা আর সহযোগিতায় ২০১৭ সালে প্রথম কলকাতার রাজপথে বের হয় মঙ্গল শোভাযাত্রা। মানুষ ভাবতেই পারেনি মঙ্গল শোভাযাত্রায় মানুষের এত ভিড় হয়। রোদকে উপেক্ষা করে এই মঙ্গল শোভাযাত্রা দেখেছিল কলকাতাবাসী। এবারও দেখবেন তাঁরা।

পয়লা বৈশাখে কলকাতাস্থ উপহাইকমিশনের উদ্যোগে বের হয় মঙ্গল শোভাযাত্রা। বিভিন্ন মুখোশ, ব্যানার, ফেস্টুন এবং চিরায়ত বাংলার নানা প্রতীক নিয়ে অনুষ্ঠিত হয় এই শোভাযাত্রা। বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান সরণির বাংলাদেশ গ্রন্থাগার থেকে শুরু হয় এই মঙ্গল শোভাযাত্রা। শেষ হয় উপহাইকমিশনে। ছবি: ভাস্কর মুখার্জিগত বছর সকাল সাড়ে আটটায় দক্ষিণ কলকাতার গাঙ্গুলিবাগান থেকে শুরু হয়েছিল এই মঙ্গল শোভাযাত্রা। এবার সেই শোভাযাত্রা নতুন নামে আয়োজন করেছে, ‘মঙ্গল শোভাযাত্রা গবেষণা ও প্রসার কেন্দ্র’। এই শোভাযাত্রা শেষ হবে যাদবপুর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অদূরে বিদ্যার্থী ময়দান থেকে। এ ছাড়া আগামীকাল আরেকটি মঙ্গল শোভাযাত্রা বের হবে দক্ষিণ কলকাতার সুকান্ত সেতু থেকে। এর উদ্যোক্তা ‘মঙ্গল শোভাযাত্রা কলকাতা’ কমিটি।

বাংলা নববর্ষ পালনের রেওয়াজ সুদুর অতীত হতে চলে আসছে কলকাতায়। তবে বাংলাদেশে যেভাবে ঘটা করে বাংলা নববর্ষ উদ্‌যাপিত হয়, সেভাবে কিন্তু কলকাতায় হতো না। এখন হচ্ছে। বাংলাদেশে অবশ্য আছে প্রাণের ছোঁয়া আর আবেগেভরা অনুষ্ঠান। নববর্ষের মেলা। সেই ইলিশ-পান্তা থেকে চিড়ামুড়ি, নারকেল, বাতাসা, কদমা আর দই–মিষ্টি খাওয়ার রেওয়াজ। এখন কলকাতায়ও তা শুরু হয়েছে।

কলকাতাস্থ উপহাইকমিশনের উদ্যোগে মঙ্গল শোভাযাত্রায় ছিল বিভিন্ন মুখোশ, ব্যানার, ফেস্টুন এবং চিরায়ত বাংলার নানা প্রতীক। ছবি: ভাস্কর মুখার্জিএবারও এই মঙ্গল শোভাযাত্রায় থাকবে বিষ্ণুপুর ও বিক্রমপুরের ঘোড়া, মুর্শিদাবাদের সোলার হাতি, কৃষ্ণনগরের ময়ুর, বাঘ, সিংহ, মাটির সরার ওপর নানা শিল্পকাজের সরা, একতারা, দণ্ড পুতুল, মুখোশ, হাতি, ঘোড়া, প্যাঁচা, কালীঘাটের পটচিত্র, পাখা, কুলো আরও কত–কী? শিশুরা সাজবে নানা রূপকথার সাজে। থাকবে সুন্দরবনের মানিক পীরের গান, গাজি পীরের গান আরও দুই বাংলার অতীত দিনের লোকগান, পুরুলিয়া ঘরানার নাচনি শিল্পী পোস্তবালার গান। এবার আরও থাকবে বিজয় সরকারের গানের ৫০ শিল্পীর দলও। থাকবে পুরুলিয়ার ছৌনৃত্য, থাকবে রাস্তাজুড়ে নানান আলপনা। এদিন সুন্দরবনেও বের হবে দুটি মঙ্গল শোভাযাত্রা। এর আয়োজন করেছে ‘মঙ্গল শোভাযাত্রা কলকাতা’ কমিটি। আর গবেষণা প্রসার কেন্দ্র রাজ্যের ১১টি স্থানে বের করবে এই মঙ্গল শোভযাত্রা। আর নাচনি শিল্পী পোস্তবালা এবার উদ্বোধন করবেন মঙ্গল শোভাযাত্রার গবেষণা কেন্দ্রের অনুষ্ঠানের।

Nepal plane crash: Three die at world's 'most dangerous' airport

Three people have died in a plane crash in Nepal, at what is regarded as one of the world's most dangerous airports.

The plane veered off the runway and hit a stationary helicopter at Lukla Airport, the main gateway to the Everest region.

The runway is short and surrounded by mountains, making it extremely difficult for takeoff and landing.

The pilot of the plane and two police officers standing near the helicopter died. Three other people were injured.

Both aircraft belonged to companies involved in taking climbers, tourists and locals to the Everest region.

The reason for Saturday's accident is not clear. Officials said the weather was good and flights later resumed their operations.

Eyewitness Bikram Raj Bhandari told the BBC: "I heard an explosion from some distance and ran towards the airport to see what had happened. There was smoke all around."

The world's most dangerous airport?

Lukla Airport is located at an altitude of 2,845m (9,333ft).

In 2008, 18 people, including 12 Germans, were killed when a plane tried to land there. Two pilots died in similar circumstances less than two years ago.

One runway rests on the edge of a cliff with a 700m drop and the airport is often closed because of strong winds or heavy clouds.

Only experienced pilots are allowed to land at Lukla. They must have made at least 100 landings and takeoffs on short runways and worked in such conditions for at least a year in Nepal.

Because of an influx of tourists in recent years, the number of flights to the Himalayas has significantly increased.

However, Nepal has a poor flight safely record. In February, seven people died in a helicopter crash, including the country's Minister of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Rabindra Adhikari.

The European Union has banned the flights of all Nepalese airlines in its airspace.

Injured man airlifted after cliff fall at North Berwick Law

An injured man had to be airlifted from a hillside in the early hours of the morning after falling from a cliff edge in East Lothian.

The man was with two friends who got into trouble at North Berwick Law at about 01:45.

Members of the Borders Search and Rescue Unit used abseiling equipment to reach the group.

The injured man was than winched from the scene and taken to hospital.

Fisherrow Coastguard tweeted a video of the rescue, which also involved the police and fire and ambulance services..

The other men in the group were able to walk off the hill and are not thought to have been injured.

Right to food 'should be enshrined in Scots Law'

The human right to food should be put into Scots Law to protect people from rising insecurity, a report to the Scottish government suggests.

The Scottish Human Rights Commission believes the move "would help tackle health inequalities".

Its report was compiled for the Scottish government's consultation on making Scotland a "good food nation".

The government said it was committed to protecting internationally-recognised human rights.

The right to food is currently enshrined in international legislation.

Food insecurity

The commission said this right - which involves food being accessible, adequate and available for everyone - is not being realised across Scotland.

Food insecurity is "unacceptably high", the report said, with more than 480,500 food parcels being handed out by food banks between April 2017 and September 2018.

It continues: "Health inequalities are persistent with many people, including children, unable to afford or access a healthy and nutritious diet."

Before making its submission, the commission spoke to people experiencing food poverty in Scotland, including a mother who lives with her one-year-old son in a rural area.

She said: "My universal credit was delayed and I had 85p left in my bank account.

"I had run out of nappies and wipes and was worried I would have no money for milk or food for my son if it did not come through.

"I had a food parcel delivered recently and I think I'll need another this week.

"To reach a low-cost supermarket is a three-mile walk, making it a six-mile round trip on foot with my baby in a buggy.

"To get the bus would cost me £5, which would take a significant chunk out of my weekly food budget."

'Practical leadership'

Commission chairwoman Judith Robertson said: "International law is clear that governments have obligations to take action to ensure people's right to food is realised.

"The Scottish Human Rights Commission is calling on the government to take action to incorporate the right to food into Scotland's laws as part of its work to make Scotland a good food nation.

"We want to see the Scottish government showing human rights leadership in a practical way."

The consultation document states that the option of exploring a right to food which is directly enforceable under Scots law "has not been ruled out". But it suggests any proposals sit within wider human rights responsibilities.

The Scottish government said a national taskforce was being established to take forward the group's recommendations.

A spokesman added: "We have also increased our Fair Food Fund to £3.5m this year to continue supporting organisations that help to tackle the causes of food insecurity."

No-fault evictions to be banned in England

Private landlords will no longer be able to evict tenants at short notice and without good reason under new government plans, effectively creating "open-ended tenancies".

Prime Minister Theresa May said the changes would abolish so-called no-fault evictions in England.

Section 21 notices allow landlords to evict renters without a reason once their contract comes to an end.

The National Landlords Association criticised the government's proposals.

But an organisation representing tenants said the plans were "a vital first step to ending profiteering from housing".

Housing, Communities and Local Government Secretary James Brokenshire called the proposals "the biggest change to the private rental sector in a generation".

He said the government was taking action because evidence showed that so-called Section 21 evictions were one of the biggest causes of family homelessness.

"By abolishing these kinds of evictions, every single person living in the private rented sector will be empowered to make the right housing choice for themselves - not have it made for them," he said.

A survey of 2,001 private renters by Citizens Advice suggests that landlords were using Section 21 evictions to retaliate against tenants rather than fixing problems with their properties.

Tenants who made a formal complaint had a 46% chance of being evicted within the next six months.

'Peace of mind'

At the moment, landlords can give tenants as little as eight weeks' notice after a fixed-term contract ends.

Under the government's new plans, landlords would have to provide a "concrete, evidenced reason already specified in law" in order to bring tenancies to an end.

Mrs May said the major shake-up will protect responsible tenants from "unethical behaviour" and give them the "long-term certainty and the peace of mind they deserve".

The prime minister also said the government was acting to prevent "unfair evictions".

'We were evicted for complaining about a roof leak'

Alicia Powell, 24, and her boyfriend believe they were evicted for complaining about a roof leak in their north London flat.

They complained to their property manager but nothing was done so they said they were going to report it to their local council.

Shortly afterwards they were served with a Section 21 notice.

'There will be chaos'

But the National Landlords Association (NLA) is dissatisfied with the government's plans.

Its chief executive Richard Lambert said landlords have little choice but to use Section 21 as they have "no confidence" in the courts to deal with possession claims "quickly and surely".

Mr Lambert said the proposed changes make fixed-term contracts "meaningless" and create a new system of indefinite tenancies by the "back door".

"The onus is on the government to get this right. It's entirely dependent on the government's ability to re-balance the system through Section 8 and court process so that it works for landlords and tenants alike," he said.

A Section 8 possession notice means the renter has broken the terms of their tenancy - for example by not paying rent - and sometimes involves landlords spending money taking action in court if the tenants refuse to leave.

"If the government introduces yet another piece of badly thought-out legislation, we guarantee there will be chaos," Mr Lambert added.

Mr Brokenshire said the government will ensure "responsible landlords can get their property back where they have proper reason to do so".

And Amina Gichinga from London Renters Union - which has been campaigning for the end of no-fault evictions - said: "This campaign success is a vital first step to ending profiteering from housing and towards a housing model based on homes for people, not profit.

"Section 21 is a pernicious piece of legislation that renters across the country will be glad to see the back of.

"The law allows landlords to evict their tenants at a moment's notice, leaving misery and homelessness in its wake. This fear of eviction discourages renters from complaining about disrepair and poor conditions."

'An outstanding victory'

A Ministry of Housing spokesman said: "Court processes will also be expedited so landlords are able to swiftly and smoothly regain their property in the rare event of tenants falling into rent arrears or damaging the property - meaning landlords have the security of knowing disputes will be resolved quickly."

Shelter, a charity which helps people struggling with bad housing or homelessness, welcomed the proposals.

Its chief executive Polly Neate said: "Government plans to abolish no-fault evictions represent an outstanding victory for England's 11 million private renters."

She said the plans will "transform lives".

Labour's shadow housing secretary John Healey said that any promise of help for renters is "good news" but added that "this latest pledge won't work if landlords can still force tenants out by hiking the rent".

The Labour party previously said it would scrap so-called Section 21 evictions, among a host of other reforms to the rental sector.

"Tenants need new rights and protections across the board to end costly rent increases and sub-standard homes as well as to stop unfair evictions," Mr Healy added.

Tiger Woods produced a scintillating finish to win a fifth Masters title and end an 11-year wait to claim a 15th major.

There were raucous celebrations around the 18th green as Woods finished with a two-under-par 70 to win on 13 under, one clear of fellow Americans Dustin Johnson, Xander Schauffele and Brooks Koepka.

Woods, written off by so many so often as he battled back problems in recent years, punched the air in delight, a wide smile across his face, before celebrating with his children at the back of the green.

"I'm a little hoarse from yelling," said the 43-year-old. "I was just trying to plod my way around all day then all of a sudden I had the lead.

"Coming up 18 I was just trying to make a five. When I tapped in I don't know what I did, I know I screamed.

"To have my kids there, it's come full circle. My dad was here in 1997 and now I'm the dad with two kids there.

"It will be up there with one of the hardest I've had to win because of what has transpired in the last couple of years."

This was Woods' first Masters victory since 2005 and he is now just one behind Jack Nicklaus' record of six wins at Augusta National

Victory caps a remarkable resurgence for Woods, who missed the 2016 and 2017 Masters with back problems before finally undergoing back fusion surgery in April of that year.

A superb 2018 followed where he challenged at The Open before finishing joint sixth and pushed eventual champion Koepka close at the US PGA Championship.

He then capped off the season by winning the Tour Championship for his 80th PGA Tour title and this victory puts him one behind the record of 82 held by Sam Snead.

Overnight leader Francesco Molinari's hopes sunk with two double bogeys on the back nine and he had to settle for a share of fifth on 11 under after a two-over 74.

Ian Poulter's chances ended after he hit his tee shot into the water on the 12th and he closed with a 73 for a share of 12th on eight under, three shots ahead of fellow Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick and Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy, who carded rounds of 70 and 71 respectively.

No stopping Woods' march to glory

Perhaps the crucial hole in the story of this year's Masters was the 12th on the final round, the treacherous par three where any errant tee shot risks being sucked back into Rae's Creek.

Molinari, who played with Woods in the final round as he won The Open last July, dumped his tee shot into the water at the front of the green and walked off with a double-bogey five.

Tony Finau, also in the final group, followed Molinari in the water to drop back to eight under.

The more experienced Woods, who was playing his 22nd Masters, played to the heart of the green and two-putted for par to join Molinari at the top of the leaderboard on 11 under.

That par was cheered like a birdie by the thousands of patrons who have followed his every stroke this week, alerting more and more to join the party and roar Woods home.

Others were challenging from behind with Schauffele and world number two Johnson posting four-under-par 68s to set the clubhouse target at 12 under.

Molinari faded further after hitting his third shot into the pond guarding the 15th green and from that moment there was no stopping Woods' relentless march to the title.

A par on the 17th left the world number 12 with a lead of two shots going up the last - only Koepka, who has won three of the past seven majors, could realistically put any pressure on but the American missed an eight-foot birdie putt to stay at 12 under.

Woods appeared to fluff his second shot to the 18th, leaving it well short of the green, and could only chip on to 14 feet, but with a two-shot cushion he could afford to drop a shot and he sealed the win with his second putt.

"I was as patient as I have been in years. I kept control of my emotions, shots, placement," said Woods.

"To see that leaderboard it was a who's who. And it all flipped at 12 when Francesco made a mistake. All these scenarios started flying around.

"It was an amazing buzz to figure what was going on while staying present and focused on what I needed to do."

For Molinari, it was a case of what might have been. "I think I made a few new fans with those two double bogeys," he said. "It's great to see Tiger doing well. The way he was playing last year, I think we all knew it was coming sooner or later."

When Woods won the 2008 US Open, few people imagined it would take another 11 years for the next major to come along.

But a car crash in November 2009 eventually led to admissions of infidelity and the breakdown of his marriage and Woods taking an "indefinite break" from golf.

He returned not long after but following five wins in 2013, Woods started just 24 events in the next four years as his chronic back pain took control.

In 2017 Woods was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence when he was found asleep at the wheel of his car, later pleading guilty to reckless driving.

He had five prescription drugs in his system as he recovered from the spinal fusion surgery that has ultimately given him a second golfing career.
