The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has stated that President Tinubu remains fully committed to implementing local government autonomy as a means of deepening democracy and accelerating development at the grassroots level.

Idris stated this in Abuja on Friday when he received the National Forum of Ex-Councilors on a courtesy visit to his office.

“The local government, which is the third tier of government, is actually the closest to the people of Nigeria and that is why President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in his wisdom revisited the issue of autonomy for the local government councils. You are aware that some time last year, an interpretation was sought by the Attorney General and Minister of Justice at the Supreme Court and there was this pronouncement from the highest court in the land indicating that there is indeed, as enshrined in our constitution, the need for the local government councils to be autonomous; to be independent and also function in all ramifications, whether it’s political or financial.

“Their autonomy and the ability to function very well, will strengthen democracy at the grassroots and also promote development at that level,” he said.

The Minister recalled that local government councils once functioned effectively, but over time, the third tier of government has been significantly weakened.

“Over the years, we have witnessed the whittling down of the ability of the local government councils to function as enshrined in our constitution.

“The President being a very strong democrat, believes that for our democracy to advance to the level that we want it to be, the strengthening of that tier of government is essential.

“Democracy is the best form of government and we would not want a situation where the local government will be weakened,” he said.

The Minister stressed that state governors should collaborate with President Tinubu to restore local government councils to the structure and purpose originally envisioned by the framers of the Nigerian Constitution.

Idris thanked the former councillors for their commitment to democracy and informed them that President Tinubu is implementing far-reaching reforms aimed at restoring Nigeria to a path of economic growth and sustainable development.

The Minister urged the former councillors to serve as ambassadors of the Tinubu administration at the grassroots by explaining to the people that the ongoing reforms are essential for national progress and not intended to cause hardship.

“I want to urge you to please, support the reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. They are not designed to create hardship for Nigerians. Yes, they might be tough at the beginning but like the president has said, the economy is turning the corner.

“We urge you to please continue to explain to the people because you have 70,000 strong members and all of you have your supporters across the country and across party lines. Please ensure that the message of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu gets to Nigerians. Let Nigerians really understand the mission of the president, which is to restore Nigeria and put it on a solid path of sustainable prosperity,” he said.

Idris stated that the removal of fuel subsidy and the unification of the foreign exchange rates have already resulted in significant savings, leading to a doubling of allocations to state and local governments to enable the execution of impactful projects for the people.

He said the establishment of Development Commissions across all the geo-political zones is to take development to every nook and cranny of the country.

In response to being honoured with the “People-Oriented Award” by the ex-councillors, the Minister expressed gratitude, saying the recognition would further inspire him to rededicate himself to the service of the people.

In his remarks, the Assistant Secretary of the Forum, Mr. Cole Michaels, commended the Minister for revitalizing the agencies under his ministry, noting that they have been effectively informing and enlightening the public about the programmes and policies of the Tinubu administration.

He stated that the award was presented in recognition of the Minister’s outstanding contributions to the promotion of democracy in the country.

The delegation, comprising representatives from various states across the federation, was led by the Forum’s President, Mr. Auwal Kassim Hassan.

The presidency on Friday flayed what it described as misrepresentation of the comments by the Vice President Kashim Shettima, during the launch of ex Minister Mohammed Adoke’s book.

A statement by Stanley Nkwocha
Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Communications
(Spokesman of the Vice President) said his boss’ remarks were no criticism of President Tinubu. According to Nkwocha, “Vice President Shettima stands in loyal concert with President Tinubu in implementing these difficult but necessary actions to safeguard our democracy. We urge media organisations and political actors to desist from the destructive practice of wrenching statements from context in order to fabricate nonexistent conflicts.”

The presidential statement titled: “No Link Between VP Shettima’s Remarks At Book Launch And Certain Online Reports ” also further said: “The Office of the Vice President @officialSKSM
has noted with serious concern the gross misrepresentation of remarks made by His Excellency, Senator Kashim Shettima, Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, during the public presentation of the book “OPL 245: The Inside Story of the $1.3 Billion Oil Block” by Mohammed Bello Adoke (SAN), held at the Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, on Thursday, July 10, 2025.

“Certain online news outlets and individuals have distorted the Vice President’s comments in pursuit of a mischievous agenda, twisting his account of how the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan considered removing him from office—then as Governor of Borno State—at the height of the insurgency in the North East region.

“This sensational reporting, which strips the Vice President’s remarks of their proper context, ventures into fiction by drawing false equivalence between his personal experience and the state of emergency declared in Rivers State, as well as the subsequent suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara by His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu
@officialABAT
, GCFR, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

According to the Presidency, “We wish to state categorically that Vice President Shettima’s comments were made within the context of acknowledging the author’s professional conduct during his tenure as Attorney General of the Federation—a tribute to his public service record. His remarks were historical references to events during the Jonathan administration and were intended as a discourse on Nigeria’s constitutional evolution. They served to highlight how complex federal-state tensions have been managed through legal mechanisms and the country’s progress in that regard.

“For the avoidance of doubt, President Tinubu did not remove Governor Fubara from office. The constitutional measure implemented was a suspension, not an outright removal. This action, along with the declaration of a state of emergency, was taken in response to the grave political crisis in Rivers State at the time. The situation was unprecedented, with the State House of Assembly complex under demolition and the Governor facing a looming threat of impeachment by aggrieved members of the legislature. No objective observer can deny that this decisive intervention by the President brought stability and calm to Rivers State.

“This situation is not comparable to that of the North East under the Jonathan administration, where violent non-state actors were directly challenging the sovereignty of the Nigerian state, demanding unified action by both federal and state authorities to confront terrorism. In contrast, President Tinubu acted strictly within constitutional limits and in consultation with relevant stakeholders to preserve democratic institutions and restore order in Rivers State.

“Nigeria’s laws provide a clear framework for addressing such matters. Section 305(3)(c) of the Constitution authorises extraordinary measures when there is “a breakdown of public order and public safety in the federation or any part thereof to such extent as to require extraordinary measures to restore peace and security.”

“The situation in Rivers State clearly met this constitutional threshold, with persistent politically motivated violence, systematic attacks on federal institutions, and near-complete paralysis of governance—conditions intolerable in any democratic society. According to credible security reports, these acts even escalated into attacks on national assets.

“President Tinubu acted with constitutional fidelity. His proclamation invoking Section 305(2) was ratified by an overwhelming bipartisan majority in the National Assembly, as required by Section 305(3).

“This cross-party consensus in suspending the government of Rivers State, led by Sim Fubara, reflects a shared understanding among our elected representatives that the situation had reached a point of constitutional necessity, requiring immediate federal intervention.

“Clearly, without mincing words, the action of President Tinubu in suspending Mr Fubara and others from exercising the functions of office averted the Governor’s outright removal. To conflate suspension with removal is misleading. Therefore, interpreting Senator Shettima’s remarks as commentary on current events is either a wilful misrepresentation or a deliberate neglect of constitutional context.

“The Vice President, speaking extemporaneously, focused on the importance of public officials documenting their stewardship and on the enduring principle of accountability in public service. His historical references were made to illustrate the principled stands taken by past public servants, as well as his personal ties to Mohammed Bello Adoke and former Speaker Aminu Waziri Tambuwal. His remarks were not in any way a criticism of President Tinubu’s actions, which the Vice President and the entire administration fully support and stand by without reservation.”

The Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited NNPCL Mr Bayo Ojulari has hinted that the Government was considering outright sale of the Refineries in Kaduna Warri and Port Harcourt as the ongoing repairs was becoming complicated. He dropped the hint in an interview with @Bloomberg in Vienna , Austria.

The admission by the NNPCL helmsman comes on the heel of that of Aliko Dangote who said he doubted whether the Refineries would ever work again and former president Olusegun Obasanjo who said there was nothing to show for the over $2 Billion spent on Turn Around Maintenance of the Refineries in the last years.

Excerpt

“What we’re saying is that sale is not out of the question. All the options are on the table, to be frank, but that decision will be based on the outcome of the reviews we’re doing now.

So refineries, we made quite a lot of investment over the last several years and brought in a lot of technologies. We’ve been challenged.

Some of those technologies have not worked as we expected so far. But also, as you know, when you’re refining a very old refinery that has been abandoned for some time, what we’re finding is that it’s becoming a little bit more complicated.

So we’re reviewing all our refinery strategies now. We hope before the end of the year, we’ll be able to conclude that review. That review may lead to us doing things slightly differently.”

The Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshall Hassan Abubakar, says that the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is expanding its intelligence acquisition capacity to effectively combat evolving security

By Peter Amine

The Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshall Hassan Abubakar, says that the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is expanding its intelligence acquisition capacity to effectively combat evolving security challenges bedevilling the country.

Abubakar stated this on Friday in Makurdi at the graduation ceremony of the regimental intelligence and security officers course 4/2025.

The CAS said that in the current dynamic security environment, threats to national security have grown increasingly asymmetric, complex and unpredictable.

He said that non-state actors, organised criminal groups and internal saboteurs now operate with a level of coordination and stealth that demands a proactive, intelligence-led approach to effective security.

“These evolving challenges have necessitated a shift in how the Nigerian Air Force anticipates, prepares and responds to emerging threats within and beyond its operational environment.

“In recognition of this imperative, the Nigerian Air Force identified a critical need to expand its intelligence acquisition capacity to other specialities.”

The CAS said the establishment of the Regimental Intelligence and Security Officers Course by the Air Intelligence Branch is a strategic initiative aimed at equipping a select cadre of officers with foundational and applied skills in intelligence and regimental security.

He said the participants were drawn from diverse branches to foster a service-wide integration of intelligence principles and practices.

“The overarching goal is to close intelligence gaps across bases and operational theatres by developing officers capable of providing timely, actionable intelligence to support NAF operations,” he stated.

According to him, intelligence remains the bedrock of effective air operations, and informs decision-making, drives mission planning, and shapes operational outcomes.

Abubakar stated that the integration of intelligence capabilities across various NAF specialities would enhance its situational awareness and mission readiness.

He pointed out that the successful completion of the course marks a strategic gain for the service and positioned the graduates to play a pivotal role in strengthening the intelligence architecture of the NAF.

He urged participants to apply their newly acquired expertise to advance the service’s mission, exemplify professionalism, and bring clarity to uncertainty, foresight to decision-making, and resilience to operations.

The Air Officer Commanding (AOC), Air Training Command, AVM Ahmed Dari, commended the CAS for personally honouring them with his presence.

Dari thanked him for the special interest and consistently showing interest in training NAF personnel.

The AOC also lauded the NAF Chief of Training Operations for overseeing the activities of the command and his invaluable advice.

The Commandant, Nigerian Air Force School of Air Intelligence, Air Commodore Adolphus Akins, said that 30 officers graduated from the eight-week course.

Akins said that the course focused on four critical areas which include general service knowledge, security, operations, technical intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance space.

“In addition to this, the students were exposed to intelligence report writing, intelligence analysis, mapping, critical thinking, among others.

“Intelligence experts were invited to lecture the students on interrogation, elicitation, investigation, analysis, and improvised and explosives detection.

“The students were engaged in practical exercises within the eight weeks,” he explained.

Sqn. Ldr. Elijah Ogabi, who spoke on behalf of the graduates, promised to deploy the knowledge for the service of Nigeria.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the high point of the event was the presentation of certificates to graduates and awards to the best graduating students. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

By David Adeoye

Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has said that the ongoing coalition of some politicians ahead of the 2027 general elections was not a threat to the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP).

Makinde stated this on Friday shortly after the South-West PDP caucus meeting held at the zonal secretariat of the party in Ibadan.

“Who are these people in this coalition? they have been in some political parties before.

“What are their antecedent and does it means that every time they move from one party to the another they have repented, changed or they have something new to offer the people? Those are the salient questions.

“If the roof of this PDP building here is leaking, as leaders of the party are we going to abandon the building and go elsewhere to take refuge?

“We will stay inside here, fix it and let the people know that we are responsible leaders and that we have the interest of the people at heart.

“That will be my expectation for anybody that have anything against this party,” the governor said.

Meanwhile, a communique issued by the zonal Publicity Secretary of the party, Chief Sanya Atofarati, the party demanded immediate release of the withheld local governments allocation in Osun.

The party asserted that the withholding of the allocation by the Federal Government was unconstitutional, unwarranted and a violation of the rights and wellbeing of the people of Osun.

It further urged members of the PDP to remain united, steadfast and continue to stand behind its zonal leaders in navigating through all issues at the zonal and national levels.

The caucus reaffirmed that the PDP in South-West is intact and urged all organs and relevant bodies of the party to remain focused.

It charged all members to continue working assiduously towards the successful conduct of the scheduled national convention, to further strengthen and reposition the party for the task ahead.

The caucus commended Gov. Makinde, his Osun counterpart, Sen. Ademola Adeleke and other leaders of the PDP in the zone for their untiring roles in ensuring the stability and growth of the party. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

‎

‎In a concerted effort to curb the rising cases of virtual asset and investment fraud, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) are set to launch a nationwide sensitisation campaign aimed at educating Nigerians on the dangers of cybercrime and promoting a culture of financial integrity.

‎

‎Speaking at a public lecture organised by the EFCC to commemorate the African Union Anti-Corruption Day, the Director-General of NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, announced the Agency’s plan to roll out a comprehensive Digital Awareness Campaign across strategically selected states.

‎

‎He explained that the states would be chosen based on key vulnerability indicators such as prevalence of investment fraud, youth population density, and digital risk exposure.

‎

‎Mallam Issa-Onilu also revealed plans for a youth-focused initiative under the campaign. The programme is designed to instill ethical entrepreneurship, foster financial responsibility, and empower young Nigerians to make informed decisions—particularly those susceptible to online scams and get-rich-quick schemes.

‎

‎Highlighting the Agency’s broader commitment to combating societal crimes, the NOA Director-General noted that the Agency’s innovative AI-powered platform, CLHEEAN, has been instrumental in enabling citizens to report crime-related information anonymously. Reports submitted through the platform are directed to the appropriate security agencies for prompt action.

‎

‎In his remarks, EFCC Chairman, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, reaffirmed the Commission’s long-standing collaboration with NOA, especially in public enlightenment on government initiatives and anti-corruption efforts. He also urged Nigerians to support and cooperate with law enforcement agencies in the ongoing fight against financial crimes.

‎

‎

‎The event also featured the participation of key stakeholders, including the Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Dr. Emomotimi Agama; the Registrar-General of the Corporate Affairs Commission, Hussaini Ishaq Magaji; and representatives of the Women Society of Nigeria and various Civil Society Organisations (CSOs).

The Federal Government says about 161 million Nigerians are currently food insecure, even as it intensifies efforts to avert an impending food and nutrition crisis.

Alhaji Nuhu Kilishi, Director of the Nutrition and Food Safety Department, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, said this on Friday in Abuja.

He was speaking during a stakeholders’ consultative meeting on the development of a Food and Nutrition Security Crisis Preparedness Plan (FNSCPP).

The plan is a spin-off of the Accelerating Nutrition Results in Nigeria (ANRiN) project, a state-led, World Bank-funded initiative aimed at reducing malnutrition by expanding access to quality, cost-effective nutrition services for vulnerable populations.

Kilishi said food insecurity in the country had risen sharply, with moderate and severe levels increasing from 35 per cent in 2014 to approximately 74 per cent in recent years.

“Only 20 per cent of Nigerians are currently food secure, meaning they are certain of their next meal,” he said, attributing the worsening trend to insecurity and economic hardship.

Banditry, kidnapping, and general insecurity, he explained, had significantly reduced farm sizes and driven many away from agricultural production.

“Inflation and rising prices of food inputs and commodities have also made it difficult for households to afford healthy diets.”

Describing the food and nutrition situation as dire, especially in crisis-affected areas, Kilishi noted that the government had developed targeted strategies to address the challenge.

“Among them is the distribution of seeds and inputs to support homestead gardening across all 774 Local Government Areas.

“We have secured World Bank funding to implement this plan in 21 states, while the remaining 15 states will be supported through federal resources,” he said.

Also speaking, Dr Ritgak Tilley-Gyado, a Senior Health Specialist at the World Bank, said the ANRiN project, which began in 2018, had entered its second phase.

She noted that the Bank initially committed 232 million dollars to the programme at Nigeria’s request, marking a shift from curative to preventive approaches in addressing malnutrition.

“With additional crisis response window financing made available, the aim now is to strengthen Nigeria’s systems to prevent future food and nutrition crises.”

Tilley-Gyado added that the new plan was forward-looking and focused on building long-term resilience rather than responding reactively to emergencies.

In her remarks, Mrs Ladidi Bako-Aiyegbusi, Director of Nutrition at the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, cited findings from the 2021 National Food Consumption and Micronutrient Survey.

According to her, the survey showed that more than 40 per cent of households cannot afford nutritious meals.

She said the lack of access had contributed to Nigeria’s high maternal and child mortality rates, as well as widespread clinical malnutrition.

Bako-Aiyegbusi noted that the meeting was a follow-up to a directive from Vice President Kashim Shettima for the development of a national food and nutrition preparedness plan.

“We do not want to wait for a crisis before responding. Food and nutrition security is not the responsibility of the health sector alone, it is multisectoral.

“Agriculture, education, water resources, information, security, and development partners all have critical roles to play,” she emphasised.

Mrs Ojuolape Solanke, National Project Manager for ANRiN 2.0, said the project would ensure the delivery of essential nutrition services to children and pregnant women at the primary healthcare level.

She added that the plan included coordinated efforts across key ministries, Agriculture, Budget and Economic Planning, and Health, for results-based implementation.

“We are working to ensure that within the next six months, a comprehensive plan is in place to guide Nigeria’s response to any future food and nutrition emergencies,” Solanke said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the proposed plan forms part of proactive efforts to shield the country from a deepening food security crisis. (NAN)(www.nannew.ng)

By Funmilayo Adeyemi

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted license for the establishment of the Ebonyi State University of Aeronautics and Aerospace Engineering, Ezza, Ebonyi, making the 300th university in Nigeria.

The Executive Secretary of NUC, Prof. Abdullahi Ribadu, during the formal licensing ceremony in Abuja on Friday, said the university also marked the 69th state-owned university in the country.

NAN recalls that the NUC approved the establishment of the Ebonyi State University of ICT, Science, and Technology in January, this year, but the institution is yet to commence operations.

In addition to the three state-owned universities, Ebonyi has two other state higher institutions, six federal tertiary institutions and one private university

The other two state-owned higher institutions are, Ebonyi State College of Education, Ikwo and Ebonyi State College of Health Sciences and Technology, Ngbo.

The six federal tertiary institutions included, Alex Ekwueme Federal University, King David Federal University of Health Sciences and Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic,

Others are, Federal College of Agriculture, Ishiagu, Federal College of Education (Technical), Isu: and Federal College of Health, Mgbo

NAN reports that the only private university in the state is Evangel University, Okpoto:

Presenting the new certificate, Ribadu described the moment as a “historic milestone” that underlined the Ebonyi State Government’s commitment to educational development, technological innovation, and youth empowerment.

“This is not just about adding to the number of universities, but about creating a world-class institution that will drive research, innovation, and industry collaboration in the aerospace sector,” Ribadu said.

He said that the newly licensed university would focus on aeronautics and aerospace engineering, addressing Nigeria’s growing need for homegrown expertise in aviation and related technologies.

Presenting the certificate, Ribadu emphasised the importance of maintaining academic integrity, curriculum standards, and collaboration with industry leaders.

He urged the new university to align with the NUC Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS), covering aerospace, automotive, mechatronics, and 26 related fields.

“We expect that it (the university) will adhere strictly to the guidelines set forth for country assurance, curriculum development, and the overall management of academic programmes.

“As we celebrate this achievement, I urge all stakeholders, government officials, university administrators, faculty members, and students to work collaboratively to ensure that the institution thrives and upholds the highest standards of academic integrity.

“It is our collective responsibility to ensure that this university does not only add to the number of institutions in the country, but stands out as a beacon of learning, character development, and societal transformations,” Ribadu said.

He, therefore, said that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and National Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) would be notified duly.

Responding, the Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, said the new university will drive job creation, skill development, and national competitiveness in engineering and aviation.

Represented by Patricia Obila, the Deputy Governor, , Nwifuru, said the university seeks to diversify its economy and build capacity in emerging technologies, setting the stage for innovation, inclusion, and international relevance.

“The certificate is given to us because we have been tested, we have gone through all the hurdles, and at the end of the day, we passed everything.

“And that is why this certificate is given to us to move forward through the university and make sure that we contribute our own quota in education, ” he said.

The governor noted that education is a core priority of his administration and he is ready to give the best education the indigenous require for uplift.

” As we all know, our government is a friendly government, when it comes to education, it doesn’t play with it.

“Through our People’s Charter of Needs, we have sent a lot of people abroad to learn one trade or the other. Not just abroad, within the federation.

“We are doing this to make sure that we ameliorate the suffering of our people through education.

“We are ready, we will not only sustain this legacy, we will lead with it,” he said.

He pledged to ensure that the institution becomes a model for others in both structure and quality. (NAN) (ww.nannews.ng)

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) says it is collaborating with adolescent volunteers in Osun to drive a campaign against the low uptake of the Human Papillomavirus

By Victor Adeoti

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) says it is collaborating with adolescent volunteers in Osun to drive a campaign against the low uptake of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine in Osun.

Rabiah Busari, UNICEF Young Leader on HPV Vaccine and Adolescent Health in Osun, said this during a two-day stakeholders’ meeting on Adolescent and Youth-Led Action on HPV Vaccine on Friday in Osogbo.

Busari said the volunteers, with the support of UNICEF, would be working in five local government areas in the state where the uptake of the vaccine was low.

She said three volunteers would be selected in each of the local governments and would engage in aggressive HPV vaccine campaign for six months.

According to her, the 2024 data from a multi-age campaign shows there is low uptake of the vaccine in the aforementioned local government areas.

“So, we are going back to these communities to educate caregivers and parents about the importance of the vaccine.

“Our aim is to reach nine-year-old girls who will be vaccinated with the HPV vaccine to prevent cervical cancer in the future.

“Volunteers are at the heart of the campaign. We need passionate young people who can connect with their communities, speak the local language, and help to counter the myths about the vaccine,” she said.

“The affected local governments include Ife North, Ife South, Ede North, Ede South, and Osogbo,” she said.

Busari also said the volunteers would be engaging in advocacy, mobilisation, and sensitisation across the local governments.

According to her, cervical cancer is a major public health concern in Nigeria and remains the second most common cancer affecting women in the country.

“Each year, more than 12,000 women are diagnosed, and sadly, 8,000 die from it,” she said.

One of the volunteers, David Adebowale, said he volunteered to be part of the campaign to ensure that no girl child died from cervical cancer.

Another volunteer, Ikeola Fajuyi, said that she was passionate about ensuring that nine-year-old girls got the vaccine in the affected local governments.

Also, UNICEF Adolescent Development Specialist, Mrs Ngozi Izuora-Songu, said available data showed that largely, the uptake of the vaccine was low in some local areas in the state.

Izuora-Songu also said that the meeting was to sensitise stakeholders in the state on how to upscale the intake of the vaccine.

“We are hoping that by October, when we will be rolling out the big campaign, we will be able to cover about 70 per cent of the population in the state,” she said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

A legal practitioner, Festus Onifade, has prayed the Court of Appeal in Abuja to sanction MultiChoice Nigeria Limited, the operator of DStv and Gotv, over alleged continuous increas

By Taiye Agbaje

A legal practitioner, Festus Onifade, has prayed the Court of Appeal in Abuja to sanction MultiChoice Nigeria Limited, the operator of DStv and Gotv, over alleged continuous increase in the prices of its packages despite the pending appeal.

Onifade urged the appellate court to compel the company to maintain the status quo until the case is decided.

He sought a declaration that the pay-TV company’s price increments during and pending the appeal, “undermines the integrity and sanctity of this honourable court and therefore is unreasonable, illegal and unlawful.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that MultiChoice had dragged Onifade, Coalition of Nigeria Consumers and Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) to Appeal Court as 1st to 3rd respondents respectively.

The appeal followed the judgment of the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal (CCPT) in suit marked: CCPT//OP/1/2022 delivered on Sept. 6, 2022.

The firm, in its notice of appeal on Sept. 6, 2022, said the tribunal erred in law when it held that an aggrieved consumer need not approach the commission with its complaint before filing an action before it (tribunal) as provided by Section 47 and 146 of FCCP Act, 2018.

It argued that the tribunal erred in law when despite the failure of the Ist and 2nd respondents to fulfill the condition precedent to activation of the tribunal’s jurisdiction, held that the panel (tribunal) had jurisdiction to entertain and determine the action.

MultiChoice also argued that the tribunal erred in law when notwithstanding its lack of jurisdiction to entertain the substantive suit, refused to set aside its ex-parte order made on March 30, 2022, restraining the company from increasing its subscription rates pending the determination of the matter.

The appellant, therefore, sought four reliefs, including an order allowing the appeal.

It prayed the court for an order holding that the tribunal lacked the jurisdiction to entertain and determine the substantive suit.

It equally sought an order setting aside the ex-parte order of the CCPT made on March 30, 2022, and an order vacating the judgment made on Sept. 6, 2022.

But Onifade, in his motion in respect of the appeal number: CA/ABJ/CV/1363/2022 file by the company, sought an order restraining MultiChoice from further increasing the prices of its products and services pending the hearing and determination of the appeal.

The motion on notice, dated July 1, was filed on July 4 by the lawyer.

He sought an order restraining the firm from taking any step(s) that may negatively affect his rights pending the hearing and final determination of the appeal.

Besides, he sought an order compelling the FCCPC to monitor compliance, and a demand for N20 million in damages for what he described as a breach of his consumer rights “as a result of the unlawful increments during the pendency of this appeal.”

The lawyer, in the affidavit he deposed to, averred the tribunal had earlier granted an order restraining MultiChoice from increasing prices while the matter was pending.

However, the company allegedly disregarded the order and went ahead with multiple increments, including during the pendency of the current appeal.

“The Appellants have continuously altered the subject matter of the litigation without the court’s leave,” Onifade said.

He said that MultiChoice’s actions risk rendering any future judgment by the appellate court futile.

In his written address, Onifade emphasised that it is a well-established principle in law that parties must maintain the status quo during the pendency of an appeal, especially when the appeal is directly tied to the action being challenged.

“The purpose is to prevent the subject matter of the litigation from being wasted, damaged or altered in a way that would make it impossible to effectively enforce the outcome of the appeal,” he argued.

He stressed that the integrity of the appellate court would be undermined if MultiChoice is allowed to continue with its price adjustments unchecked.

He said his motion would not prejudice the company but rather serve to protect the sanctity of the court and uphold consumer rights during the judicial process.

The court was yet to fixed a date for hearing of the case as at the time of the report.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

By Isaiah Eka

Gov. Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom has reiterated his administration’s commitment to partner with the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) to enhance security in the state, especially along the waterways.

Eno made the remark while receiving a delegation, led by AVM Sunday Aneke, Air Officer Commanding (AOC) Mobility Command, Nigerian Air Force, Yenagoa who called on him in Uyo on Friday.

The governor commended the NAF for its strategic collaboration with other security agencies in curbing insecurity, especially in states within the mobility command’s jurisdiction.

He noted that all the security agencies in the state, including units of the Nigerian Air Force, had been working collaboratively, adding that the synergy had enhanced the security of lives and properties in the state.

“We welcome you warmly, first of all to Akwa Ibom, and as a visitor, on your tour of duty to the state, that is within your jurisdiction.

“We would like to celebrate the work that you have done already and particularly in collaboration with the Air Force.

“As a state, we take security very seriously and work with our security team.

‘’The commander knows that we work as a team, to ensure that we keep our people safe, because it is the primary responsibility of any responsible government,” he said.

Eno commended the cooperation and support of the mobility command to the state, and lauded the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, for “his excellent, diligent and professional service” to the country.

He, however, appealed for the continued support of the force in clearing the creeks and isolated islands of sea pirates and other criminals.

Earlier in his remarks, Aneke expressed gratitude to the governor for the support, contribution and collaboration the command had enjoyed from the state government.

According to him, the state and the force have remained strategic partners for years.

He added that the partnership had yielded immeasurable peace and stability, as well as economic growth for the people.

Aneke then expressed the commitment of NAF to continue working closely with the state government to ensure the safety of lives and property. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

By Desmond Ejibas

The Police Command in Rivers has confirmed that two suspects declared wanted in connection to a recent violent attack on a public office holder in the state are now in custody.

A recent widely circulated video showed about 30 hoodlums wielding machetes, assaulting the Sole Administrator of Ahoada East Council, Goodluck Iheanachor, and allegedly coercing him into resigning from office.

Following the incident, the police declared Iheanachor’s Chief Security Officer (CSO), Hector Ekakita and Chief of Staff (COS), Aloni Olodi wanted for their alleged roles in the assault.

However, SP Gra

ce Iringe-Koko, the command’s spokesperson, told journalists in Port Harcourt on Friday that both suspects had voluntarily presented themselves to the police to aid the ongoing investigation.

“Ekakita and Olodi, who are the alleged masterminds of the criminal conspiracy, stealing, and assault occasioning harm, reported to the Rivers State Police Command Headquarters on July 10.

“They were promptly interviewed by the Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, and his management team,” she stated.

Iringe-Koko further explained that following the preliminary interview, the suspects were handed over to the Deputy Commissioner of Police in-charge of the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID) for further investigation.

She called on members of the public with useful information regarding the incident to come forward, assuring them of confidentiality and protection of their identity.

The police, she noted, would be relying on the invaluable cooperation and assistance of residents to ensure that justice would be served in the case involving Iheanachor.

“We assure the public that investigations into this matter will be thorough and transparent,” she concluded. (NAN) (www.nanews.ng)

By Taiye Agbaje
The Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed the N500 million suit filed by some vulnerable FCT residents, including scavengers, beggars, petty traders, against the Minister, Nyesom Wike.

Justice James Omotosho, in a judgment, held that the suit filed by their lawyer, Abba Hikima, to enforce their fundamental rights, lacked merit.

Justice Omotosho held that there was no credible evidence in the court record to proof that the rights of the vulnerable people were breached by the defendants.

The judge further held that the only evidence attached to the suit by the applicants’ were online copies of newspaper reports which were not certified by the National Library in line with Section 156 of the Evidence Act.

“In relying on newspaper reports, a party cannot just print or buy a newspaper from vendor and bring it to court without being certified by National Library,” he said, adding that a newspaper report could be forged or doctored with the aim of seeking reliefs.

“This court will not waste its time relying on newspaper reports to prove the truth of the contents therein.

“It is hearsay evidence and no probative value will be ascribed to it.

“This is a reasonable principle of law as allowing parties to rely on newspaper reports as basis for their suit will open a floodgate of litigations as all manner of persons would rush to court to file frivolous suits based on newspaper reports which may not be accurate.

“Thus the suit of the applicant is bound to fail,” he said.

Justice Omotosho also observed that the plaintiff could not name a single officer or agent of the defendants who violated the rights of the vulnerable persons or who participated in the said raid on the said date.

According to the judge, I must say here that the burden to prove the breach of fundamental rights lies on the applicant.

“In the instant case, the appellants had the onus of proving by credible affidavit evidence that their fundamental rights were breached, but they failed woefully to do so,” he said.

He said the lawyer had failed woefully to prove the allegations made against Wike and others.

“The suit of the applicant is filled with bare assertions without any proof whatsoever to establish his claim.

“The facts stated are speculative without any foundation or proof.

“The law is trite that a court of law does not act on speculation but on solid evidence.”

He said the court would not waste its precious judicial time speculating on what happened on Nov.12, 2024 or which persons were arrested or detained if any.

According to the judge, assuming the applicant was able to prove that these vulnerable persons were indeed arrested and detained by the agents of the respondents, would it be deemed to be a violation of their fundamental rights?

“The 1st respondent (Wike) in his counter affidavit stated that the said vulnerable persons are beggars, scavengers and traders who display goods for sale in unauthorised places, defecate in public places, constitute security threat and constitute nuisance in the FCT.

“Also that they have been arrested vandalising public property and even serve as spies to kidnappers and terrorist organisations,” he observed.

He further observed that the FCT minister stated that these actions by the said vulnerable persons constituted violations of the Abuja Environmental Protection Act.

“It is clear that these allegations by the 1st respondent constitute grounds to breach of fundamental rights as they are based on allegations of committing crimes within the FCT.”

The judge held that fundamental rights are not absolute and can be breached in some instances, including suspicion of committing crimes and on grounds of public safety, public order and public health, citing previous Supreme Court decisions to back his judgment.

“It is clear from the above authorities that suspicion of committing an offence is a legal ground to breach the right of a person,” he said.

Addressing Hikima’s argument that the beggars had not committed any offence and should be allowed to carrying on begging, the judge held that “there is no fundamental right to beg and no law outrightly supports public begging or begging as a venture.”

“Even the religious books, such as the Koran, even though it permits begging in certain extreme conditions, frowns against begging as a profession.

“The Holy Prophet Muhammed in one of the Hadiths (Sahih al-Bukhari) was reported to have said: ‘It is better for one of you to take a rope and bring a bundle of wood on his back and sell it, and Allah will save his face because of that, rather than asking the people who may give him or not.’”

Justice Omotosho equally said that the Bible also encourages hard work as indolence would lead to poverty, citing Proverbs 10:4.

The judge said begging, as a full time profession, is usually a result of laziness and indolence on the part of the beggar.

“There is no dignity in begging as we are encouraged to work hard.

“I am aware that some beggars have no choice than to beg due to their physical condition.

“However, this does not stop them from learning a skill which is suited to their condition and can help them earn a decent living.

“Likewise, scavengers who sleep in public places and even defecate in those places without considering the health challenge this may pose to the general populace.”

He observed that the minister, in his argument, said skill acquisition centres as well as vocational and rehabilitation centres were established in Bwari in the FCT where the vulnerable people could be trained on a skill to help them but they refused to go there.

The judge, therefore, held that allowing homeless persons, scavengers, beggars and unauthorised petty traders to roam around the city without check would amount to a dereliction of duty on the part of the minister which was capable of turning the capital city to an eyesore.

Hence, he said removing them from the Abuja streets cannot be deemed a violation of their fundamental rights in any form of guise.

According to the judge, the reliefs sought by the applicant if granted, is capable of turning the FCT into a haven of all sorts of unwanted and unwholesome activities.

His words: “It is capable of turning the FCT into a safe haven for the destitute and vagabonds around the country.

“This cannot be the intention of the drafters of the constitution. This can also encourage criminality and breeding ground for all kinds of criminal elements.

“This court will not allow the provision of Chapter 4 of the Constitution to be a legal ground to encourage such acts.

“Consequently, | hold that any action of the 1st respondent in removing these groups of people pursuant to the Abuja Environmental Protection Act is constitutional and legal.

“I must also comment on the relief for damages sought by the Applicant.

“The applicant is a legal practitioner and brought the action in his name and on behalf of vulnerable citizens of Nigeria.

“This court then wonders how the relief for damages, if same was granted, was to be shared among the said vulnerable citizens, especially as no name or details was provided for these persons.

“It seems to this court that these monies if granted would have ended up in the private pockets of persons not falling within this group of vulnerable citizens.

“However, the failure of this application ensures that this would not be the case.

“In final analysis, the case of the applicant fails in its entirety as there is no credible proof on record to support the reliefs sought.

“Consequently, this application is hereby dismissed for lack of merit.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the aggrieved residents, through the lawyer, had sued Wike and the Inspector-General (I-G) of Police as 1st and 2nd respondents, demanding N500 million in damages over alleged breach of their fundamental rights.

Hikima, who is the applicant, also joined the Director-General of Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and the Federal Government of Nigeria as 3rd to 6th respondents respectively.

The lawyer, in the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1749/2024 dated Nov. 19, 2024 but filed Nov. 20, 2024, said he is suing in public interest for the protection of vulnerable citizens in Nigeria.

He had prayed the court for an order awarding the sum of N500 million as general and exemplary damages for the violation of the fundamental rights of the affected citizens.

He prayed the court to declare that “the arbitrary arrest, detention without charges, harassment and extortion of homeless persons, scavengers, petty traders, beggars and other vulnerable Nigerians resident in the FCT, constitute a violation of their fundamental rights.

The rights, he said, are guaranteed under Sections 34, 35, 41 and 42 of the Constitution of Nigeria 1999 (as altered), among other reliefs.

The lawyer, in his affidavit, said the minister gave a directive for the arrest of the vulnerable people on Oct. 22, 2024, and that it was in the guise of enforcing the directive that the joint task force was constituted to carry out the directive.

According to him, it is not a crime to be homeless, beg or embark on a petty trade in Nigeria.

Hikima also attributed their plights to government’s failure and ineptitude in providing vulnerable Nigerians with security and decent lives.

But Wike, the DSS, NSCDC and AGF, in their separate counter affidavits, urged the court to dismiss the suit.(NAN)(nannews.ng)

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that three students of the seminary were also reportedly abducted during the attack, which occurred at about 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Confirming the incident, the Director of Social Communications, Catholic Diocese of Auchi, Rev. Fr. Peter Egielewa, said this was the second time in 10 months that the school had come under attack.

He said the diocese strongly condemned the incident and expressed deep concern over the repeated targeting of the catholic institution, its personnel, and facilities.

“We are deeply saddened and condemn in the strongest terms this act of violence,” Egielewa said, describing the persistent attacks as troubling and unacceptable.

“This is the second time in 10 months that the school has been attacked. Ten month ago, a priest was kidnapped.

“And now three seminarians were abducted and a civil defense corps is killed, while a local vigilante sustained gun injuries.

“We call on the government to protect the lives of all those who work in catholic institution and our diocese.

“We hope the security agencies at the local, state and federal level to take up the responsibility on that, so our people can be in peace and safety,” Egielewa said.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

By Abdul-Azeez Suleiman

In a world increasingly defined by its complexities and interconnections, the role of journalism transcends mere reporting; it becomes a powerful tool for advocacy and change. Within this dynamic landscape, Abdallah El-Kurebe emerges as a paragon of excellence, embodying the qualities of brilliance, respect, and a touch of fortuitous timing.

As the Editor-in-Chief of ASHENEWS, a prominent Nigerian online platform, and a seasoned health and environment journalist, El-Kurebe’s recent appointment as the Nigeria Country Coordinator for the newly established Network of Journalists for the Promotion of Agrosylvopastoral Products in West Africa and the Sahel (ReJPAH-AOS) marks a significant milestone not only in his career but also in the broader context of agricultural journalism and regional development.

The official launch of ReJPAH-AOS during the Constitutive General Assembly held on July 3 and 4 at the Concorde Hotel in Lomé, Togo, heralds a new chapter in the promotion of regional agricultural trade. This initiative, supported by the West African Association for Cross-Border Trade in Agro-Sylvo-Pastoral and Fisheries Products (AOCTAH), aims to bolster agricultural systems, enhance cross-border trade, and elevate the visibility of grassroots stakeholders.
The network’s mission is not merely to inform but to transform—the very essence of effective journalism in the 21st century.

El-Kurebe’s extensive experience in agricultural reporting positions him uniquely to lead this initiative. His deep understanding of the intricacies of health, environment, and agricultural practices equips him with the insights necessary to navigate the challenges that lie ahead. The region of West Africa, characterized by its rich agricultural potential, is also beset by formidable obstacles such as malnutrition affecting approximately 23 million people, the pervasive impacts of climate change, and the specter of food insecurity exacerbated by global disruptions. In this context, El-Kurebe’s leadership is not just timely; it is essential.

The network’s objectives resonate profoundly with the pressing needs of the region. By fostering inclusive and transformative communication, ReJPAH-AOS seeks to enhance the flow of information among stakeholders. This is particularly crucial in a landscape where farmers, traders, and consumers often operate in silos, disconnected from the broader agricultural ecosystem. El-Kurebe’s role as a coordinator will involve not only disseminating information but also facilitating dialogues that bridge these gaps. His commitment to respectful engagement with diverse communities will be instrumental in building trust and fostering collaboration among stakeholders.

Moreover, the harmonization of trade policies stands out as a pivotal goal of the network. In a region marked by varying regulations and practices, the establishment of coherent policies can significantly streamline cross-border agricultural commerce. El-Kurebe’s journalistic acumen will play a critical role in advocating for policy reforms that benefit local farmers and traders, ensuring that their voices are heard in the corridors of power.
By leveraging his platform, he can amplify the narratives of those who are often marginalized in discussions about agricultural trade and policy.

The transformative potential of informed journalism cannot be overstated. In an era where misinformation can spread rapidly, the responsibility of journalists to provide accurate, reliable, and insightful information is more crucial than ever. El-Kurebe’s appointment to ReJPAH-AOS aligns with a broader vision of empowering journalists to act as agents of change. By equipping journalists with the tools and knowledge necessary to report on agricultural issues effectively, the network aims to create a cadre of informed storytellers who can advocate for sustainable practices and equitable trade.

In addition to addressing immediate challenges, El-Kurebe’s leadership in this network embodies a long-term vision for agricultural resilience in West Africa. The region’s capacity to adapt to climate change and ensure food security hinges on the collective efforts of its stakeholders. By fostering a culture of collaboration and knowledge-sharing, ReJPAH-AOS under El-Kurebe’s guidance can catalyze innovative solutions that harness local resources and expertise. This approach not only empowers communities but also paves the way for sustainable agricultural practices that can withstand the test of time.

As we reflect on Abdallah El-Kurebe’s journey, it becomes evident that his brilliance is not merely a product of his individual achievements but is also a reflection of his commitment to uplifting others. His respect for the communities he serves, coupled with his strategic vision, positions him as a beacon of hope in a region grappling with significant challenges.

The Network of Journalists for the Promotion of Agrosylvopastoral Products in West Africa and the Sahel stands to benefit immensely from his leadership, as it embarks on a mission to transform agricultural journalism and promote regional agricultural trade.

By Martha Agas

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) have inaugurated a committee to implement the provisions of their 2024 MOU on combating fake drugs.

The spokesman of NCS, Abdullahi Maiwada, made this known in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

Maiwada said the committee was inaugurated at the NAFDAC headquarters in Abuja to begin the joint implementation of the MoU.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the NCS and NAFDAC signed an MoU on Nov. 14, 2024, to strengthen collaboration in combating the influx of illicit pharmaceuticals and other harmful substances into Nigeria.

According to the spokesperson, the committee was inaugurated during an official visit by the Comptroller-General (C-G) of the NCS, Adewale Adeniyi, to the office of NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Moji Adeyeye.

Maiwada described the visit as a concrete step towards translating the MoU into actionable programmes.

He said the Customs C-G reaffirmed the service’s commitment to the collaboration, describing the committee’s constitution as a crucial step towards fulfilling the agreement.

Maiwada also quoted the comptroller-general as commending Adeyeye’s commitment to strengthening inter-agency cooperation.

“Every time we meet, your position has always been for us to come together and deepen collaboration.

“This implementation committee will drive our shared vision to protect Nigerians from harmful, unregulated substances,” Adeniyi said.

Adeniyi stated that the terms of reference of the MoU had already been developed to guide the committee’s work.

He said, these includes development of a joint work plan, coordination of communication and training programmes, harmonisation of operational standards, monitoring and evaluation, alongside the identification of challenges with actionable solutions.

The C-G expressed confidence that the committee’s work would provide measurable outcomes that would benefit public health and national security.

He added that the agreement remained legally binding and governed by Nigerian law, as stated in the document.

NAN reports that Adeyeye stated that the regulatory cooperation with customs was central to extant efforts to rid the country of fake, substandard, and harmful products.

She also pledged to give the committee all the support it needed to succeed.

The committee is led by Olakunle Olaniran from NAFDAC, with Smart Akande, NCS Director of Legal Services, as Deputy Chairman.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

A former PDP Deputy National Chairman, Chief Olabode George, has urged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to remain in the party and work for its progress.

By Adeyemi Adeleye

A former PDP Deputy National Chairman, Chief Olabode George, has urged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to remain in the party and work for its progress.

George also appealed to other PDP leaders, including former Senate President, Sen. David Mark, the force behind a coalition of opposition parties, which adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for 2027, to return to the party.

He spoke at a social engagement, tagged: “Restitution of Restoration” on Thursday in Lagos.

George said PDP remained a strong political platform, offering great opportunities for members.

According to George, it is only in the PDP that the interest of the estranged party leaders can be better served.

The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN)reports that several opposition figures, mainly from PDP, Labour Party, and others, including some aggrieved APC chieftains, recently adopted ADC as the opposition platform for 2027.

He said: “There is no coalition in today’s Nigeria that can be stronger than PDP.

“The PDP is a reborn political party that has weathered all storm and can never go under. All these leaders must return to this Iroko political party.

“Those forming coalition should not forget they have traveled that way before, and it amounts to nothing and it will be good they remain in the party to help build it.”

According to him, party leaders leaving the party to join the opposition coalition are desecrating the grave of the founding fathers of the party, who sacrificed everything to give birth to the party.

“It is a disservice to the party whose platform they used to get to higher position in the country,” he added.

George noted that that the PDP crisis, especially at national level, had been resolved.

He added that the party had bounced back to take over its place as the major opposition party in the country.

George said with the resolution of the issues in PDP and return of peace, all the reasons cited by Atiku and others for forming the coalition were no more tenable.

“The party has weathered the storm, this party is re-born, those that have attained higher position in the country on the platform of the party should do a re-think.

“They should take it easy, there is no way their congregating can pass the PDP strength.

“They have done it before, there is no major issue of contention in the PDP that can make them leave the PDP,”he said.

He ,however, said the party had not changed its decision to zone the presidency to the south in 2027.

“What is the contention about? Why do they want to leave the PDP? They want to be presidential candidate?

“Positions are zoned in the PDP.The founding fathers of the party zoned position because lack of zoning of positions led to the collapse of the first and second republic,”he added.

Alex Otti, on Thursday, launched the Abia State Security Trust Fund (ASSTF), where he again affirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring the safety of lives and property

By Ihechinyere Chigemeri-Uwom

Gov. Alex Otti, on Thursday, launched the Abia State Security Trust Fund (ASSTF), where he again affirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring the safety of lives and property in the state

.

In a speech at the event, tagged “Building a Safer Abia”, Otti said that security should be treated as a shared responsibility by the government, businesses, and citizens.

“Insecurity cannot be tackled by arms and ammunition alone, there is need for the use of lawful force and social investment to build safer environments and discourage crime,” he said.

He said that upon assuming office in May 2023, government launched Operation Crush to reclaim territories from criminals and supported policing with vehicles and logistics.

The governor also said that the office of the Homeland Security had since become more efficient, offering vital intelligence and acting independently, when required.

He said that through the government’s efforts, Abia now enjoys peace and stability “due to the strategic planning and firm responses to external criminal threats”.

He argued that “security is expensive, but inaction costs more”, urging philanthropists and organisations to contribute generously to the fund.

He said that the fund, backed by law, would support operational equipment, intelligence systems, and technology to detect and deter crime in Abia.

“We’re setting up a quick-response centre to improve coordination and public safety through real-time data,” Otti said.

He promised transparency and accountability, assuring the people that every donation would be prudently applied.

“This is a continuous exercise. When we call, answer with generosity and duty,” he said.

In her speech, the Minister of State for Labour, Mrs Nkiruka Onyejeocha, affirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to security.

Onyejeocha emphasised that peace in Abia would positively influence national stability and urged citizens to support security agencies by remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious activities in their communities.

She said that security should not be left to government alone and called for public collaboration with law enforcement agencies to enhance safety across all aspects of life.

In his address, the Chairman of the ASSTF Board of Trustees, Mr Stanley Obiamarije, described the event as pivotal in Abia’s journey toward greater security.

Obiamarije, represented by his Vice, Mr Johnson Chukwu, commended the governor for revitalising the trust fund through decisive leadership, political will and actionable commitment.

He gave assurance that the fund would operate as a public private partnership, supporting security agencies with equipment and logistics.

He also promised that accountability and transparency would be applied in managing the funds, with all contributions documented.

According to him, the fund would be used for the acquisition of surveillance tools, communication devices, and other operational needs.

He urged businesses, traditional leaders, and civil society organisations to support the initiative.

He described it as “a form of corporate social responsibility to protect investments and staff”.

The Chairman of the occasion, Chief John Udeagbala, called for a grassroots strategy, known as “See it, Say it, Sort it”, to encourage prompt reporting and better cooperation with law enforcement agencies.

Udeagbala proposed that one per cent of the state’s Gross Domestic Product be allocated to security, and advocated a transparent levy to ensure consistent and inclusive funding.

He said that only through unity could Abia build a stronger, safer, and more prosperous future for all citizens and investors.

In an interview with newsmen, the lawmaker, representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency, Mr Alex Ikwuechegh, commended the present administration’s pragmatic and inclusive approach to governance.

Ikwuechegh said that the approach had contributed to making Abia safer, especially with the intentional government and stakeholder engagement.

He expressed optimism that partnerships with community leaders, traditional rulers, and the private sector would further transform the state’s security architecture.

Also, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Navy Comdr. Macdonald Ubah (rtd.), described the fund as a strategic move to sustain peace and reduce financial strain on government.

Ubah emphasised that security remains the bedrock of development and urged continued support to strengthen Abia’s capacity to respond to evolving security threats. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

By Oluwatope Lawanson

Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu says Lagos is building an ecosystem where ideas become inventions, startups grow globally, and technology addresses Africa’s most urgent development challenges.

Sanwo-Olu stated this on Thursday at the 10th edition of Lagos Startup Week, with the theme ‘Disrupting the Next Decade,’ held in Lagos.

The Governor was represented at the event by his Deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat.

He said Lagos is set to lead Africa’s digital revolution by driving innovation, expanding industries, increasing commercialisation, and boosting GDP and tax revenue significantly.

“We aim to drive up to tenfold GDP growth through innovation, commercialisation, industry expansion, and increased tax revenues.

“We are building a space where startups scale globally, inventions thrive, and technology solves Africa’s most pressing challenges,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The governor urged government, private sector, academia, and civil society to collaborate with Lagos in its transformative journey.

He said this would ensure Lagos remains Africa’s innovation powerhouse and secures continental prosperity and global competitiveness in the coming decade.

Sanwo-Olu said his administration is digitising services to boost transparency and efficiency across all sectors of government.

He said a cybersecurity operations centre and capacity-building programme are underway to improve local IT skills and resilience.

The governor noted that Lagos had seen a remarkable tech transformation in the last decade, with startups evolving into global players.

He noted the five unicorns now based in Lagos – Interswitch, Flutterwave, Jumia, OPay, and Moniepoint – reflecting the state’s fertile ground for innovation.

Sanwo-Olu said Lagos is no longer just Nigeria’s commercial hub but is becoming Africa’s innovation epicentre.

He added that over 70 per cent of Nigeria’s innovation funding now goes to Lagos, confirming its leadership role.

He described the event as both a celebration of innovation and a strong commitment to shaping Africa’s entrepreneurial future.

In his goodwill message, the Netherlands Consul-General in Lagos, Michel Deelen, praised Nigerians for their vibrant energy and creativity.

He said this energy finds expression in technology, research, fashion, film, and the broader innovation ecosystem.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing the Executive Order criminalising the vandalisation of critical national infrastructure

By Emmanuel Oloniruha

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing the Executive Order criminalising the vandalisation of critical national infrastructure, including telecommunications facilities.

Dr Aminu Maida, Executive Vice-Chairman of the NCC, made this known during a courtesy visit by the executive members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, to the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

Maida was represented by Mrs Nnenna Ukoha, Head of Public Affairs at the NCC.

President Bola Tinubu, on June 24, 2024, signed an Executive Order designating telecom infrastructure as Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII).

The order provides a robust legal framework to protect vital assets, ensuring uninterrupted telecom service delivery across Nigeria.

Maida noted that the NCC was now tasked with implementing the order, which addressed rising incidents of vandalism, theft, and obstruction at telecom sites that degraded network quality.

He expressed concern over the destruction of telecom assets such as fiber optic cables, generators, and other critical components.

“The Executive Order now makes the destruction or interference with telecom infrastructure a criminal offense,” he said.

He identified major challenges facing telecom operations, including vandalism, theft, restricted site access, and damage caused by construction work.

Maida added that telecom operators frequently faced obstruction from local communities, touts, and government agencies demanding levies, which delayed essential maintenance and fuel delivery.

On public concerns regarding data depletion, Maida clarified that mobile networks did not “steal” users’ internet subscriptions.

Instead, he explained that most data usage resulted from automatic phone and app updates, background app activity, hotspot sharing, and video autoplay.

He advised consumers to monitor their data usage, disable background data updates, understand their data plans, change hotspot passwords regularly, and avoid high-resolution downloads.

The NCC, according to Maida, was working with relevant stakeholders to prevent accidental infrastructure damage, particularly fiber cuts during road construction, and stressed the need for better coordination as construction expands nationwide.

He commended journalists for their role in educating the public and called for continued collaboration between the NCC and the NUJ to ensure accurate information reached Nigerians.

He also highlighted the Commission’s efforts to support underserved areas with affordable internet and to train journalists, particularly senior editors in Lagos and Abuja.

Malam Yakubu Musa, Head of Corporate Communications at NCC, reaffirmed the Commission’s strong partnership with the media, commending its role in consumer education and promoting transparency in the telecom sector.

NUJ FCT Chairman, Grace Ike, expressed the union’s commitment to building a strategic relationship with the NCC, especially in public awareness, training, affordable internet access for journalists, and digital inclusion.

She commended the NCC’s regulatory efforts and called for its support in the NUJ FCT’s upcoming Press Week and capacity-building programmes.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting was attended by senior NCC officials overseeing communications, media, protocol, and government relations, alongside members of the NUJ delegation. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

By Kelechi Ogunleye

Dr Ahmed Audi, Commandant-General (CG), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has charged state Commandants to upscale Agro-Ranging activities in their various commands.

Audi gave the charge during the CG’s second quarter meeting with senior officers of the corps on Friday in Abuja.

He urged them to work on the Agro-Rangers unit in their various formations to ensure food security across the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the agro-rangers unit of the NSCDC was established to ensure safety of farmlands as well as settlement of farmers/herders clashes.

“You must provide safety and security for farmers and other agro-allied investments in the nation as food security is paramount.

“We have to be seen practically taking up the job of giving farmers protection in order to experience a boost of farming activities,” Audi said.

In a bid to tackle illegal mining activities across the nation, the CG inaugurated six Zonal Mining Marshal Commanders that are saddled to work closely with state heads.

“We are trying to decentralise mining operations so these officers are to be in charge of mining of various geopolitical zones and are to work closely with state commands under the zones before enforcing arrests,” he said

According to Audi, President Bola Tinubu through the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has enjoined officers to continue to offer their best to the service of the nation.

“We have been doing well but we need to do more to prove to our nation and justify the confidence reposed in us by providing solutions and tackling insecurity.

“Despite all the challenges faced by the corps, we have tried to catch a niche for ourselves through performance, hence the need for tempo sustenance or more results,” the commandant said.

He however sympathised with friends, colleagues and families of personnel who had lost their lives in active service.

“We are losing personnel and this is not peculiar to the corps alone but we have to do what we have sworn to do so as to get the job done.

“I pray for the souls of the departed to rest in peace,” the commandant prayed.

He urged personnel to give more attention to the conflicts faced by the country and brace up, being the lead agency in the protection of Critical National Asset and Infrastructure (CNAI).

Audi while speaking on indiscipline, said “Our personnel have been involving themselves in some malpractices and the board has taken drastic measures to treat those elicit behaviors”.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The International Horse Racing Derby has commenced on Wednesday in Kaduna, Kaduna State, according to Alhaji Mustapha Abubakar-Bida, National Co-ordinator, Horse Racing Federation

By Mohammed Baba Busu

The International Horse Racing Derby has commenced on Wednesday in Kaduna, Kaduna State, according to Alhaji Mustapha Abubakar-Bida, National Co-ordinator, Horse Racing Federation of Nigeria (HRFN).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the epochal event, organised by the federation, is themed: ‘Hope Renewed Sahel Savannah Series 2025, Under Division System Race’.

Speaking to NAN on the sidelines of the second day of the race on Thursday, Mustapha-Bida said that the event was in commemoration of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

According to the ‘Sarkin Dawakin Nupe’, the federation organised the event sequel to the good works Tinubu has been doing for Nigeria in the past two years.

He said, “This is because of the trust we have in him and his administration as Tinubu is doing a lot for the nation.

“We believe in his government, we know he means well for Nigeria and he has done a lot to ensure that the Nigerian economy is back on track.

“He is also very supportive to the local production of horses in Nigeria.”

Mustapha-Bida further added that Tinubu has been very special about sports development, adding,”that’s why he created the National Sports Commission (NSC)as there is no Sports Ministry now.

“That has reduced the bureaucracy and the Executive Chairman of the commission has excess powers to ensure that sporting activities are greatly improved.”

He added that Kaduna was very special to the horse racing industry in the country.

Mustapha-Bida said,”The history of horse racing cannot be complete without the mention of Kaduna.

“This is because it was in 1953 that the late Sardauna of blessed memory brought horse racing to Nigeria.

“That’s why the closing event for the season of horse racing is usually done in Kaduna to commemorate its starting in Nigeria.”

The HRFN national co-ordinator also said that there were seven races in the first day of the four-day sports meet, recalling that there were seven competitions for the season including those in Bida, Yola and Zaria, among others.

According to Mustapha-Bida, the event has participants from Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon and Burkina Faso Republics.

He stated that there were five categories of the race, with breeds of horses like the local breed, Sudan and Talon, among others.

Mustapha-Bida expressed happiness that Tinubu’s horse has maintained its lead in the past two years.

He said, “We are hopeful that it will still do so as it is its natural crown and it will maintain it during the grand finale on Saturday.”

Mustapha-Bida stated that the grand finale is expected to be declared closed by Tinubu.

“He will be assisted by esteemed guests like the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr Tajuddeen Abbas, among other top-notch personalities from within and outside Nigeria.”(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

SP Ramhan Nansel, the Command’s spokesperson disclosed this in a statement on Friday in Lafia.

He said that the suspected assailants attacked the police personnel on duty on Tuesday, around 10:55 pm.

“The gunmen who ambushed and attacked our personnel came from Benue forest and started shooting sporadically.

“Displaying gallantry and tactical superiority, the personnel engaged the assailants in a fierce gun duel.

“They successfully repelled the attack and forced the criminals to flee into the Benue forest with suspected gunshot wounds.

“Unfortunately, one police officer, Insp Sunday Apochie, sustained gunshot injuries during the exchange,” Nansel said.

According to Nansel, a reinforcement team from the Kadarko Division responded swiftly, rescued the injured officer, and recovered his service AK-47 rifle from the scene.

He, however, said that a civilian residing near the scene of the incident, was hit by a stray bullet from the gunmen and tragically lost his life.

He the injured officer was immediately taken to the Primary Health Care Centre, Kadarko and later referred to the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Lafia, and currently receiving treatment and responding well.

Nansel said that the Commissioner of Police, Shetima Jauro-Mohammed, had directed an intensive investigation and manhunt to track down and apprehend the fleeing suspects.

He added that the CP also expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased civilian.

“The commissioner visited the injured officer at the hospital and gave him succour,” he said.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has congratulated Gov. Monday Okpebholo on his confirmation as the duly elected candidate in the September 2024 gubernatorial election in Edo.

By Kingsley Okoye

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has congratulated Gov. Monday Okpebholo on his confirmation as the duly elected candidate in the September 2024 gubernatorial election in Edo.

Akpabio, in a congratulatory message personally signed by him on Friday in Abuja, described the Supreme Court verdict as the triumph of democracy and the will of the people.

“What the apex court in the land has done is to affirm the will and wishes of the overwhelming majority of the people of Edo State. It shows that the election was transparent, free and fair,” Akpabio said.

“The declaration by the Supreme Court in favour of Sen. Okpebholo against Mr Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has proven that elections are won at the ballot and by people who have identified with the grassroots.

“This judgment has again reaffirmed the fact that democracy is at play and the people of Edo have wholeheartedly embraced the All Progressives Congress (APC) and popularly elected their preferred choice of Senator Okpebholo as their governor.

“This milestone affirms Okpebholo’s mandate and paves the way for him to continue delivering exceptional service to the good people of Edo.

“He has done well in the past seven months and I believe he will do excellently well in his four year tenure.

“My distinguished brother, His Excellency Senator Monday Okpebholo, on behalf of my family and constituents, the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I extend my warmest congratulations to you and the wonderful people of Edo on this landmark victory at the Supreme Court.

“I wish you success and I assure you of the Senate’s support and collaboration in ensuring the state’s progress and development.

“Congratulations once again, Gov Okpebholo. I look forward to a robust working relationship with you,” the Senate President said.

NAN reports that in a unanimous decision by a five-member panel led by Justice Mohammed Garba, the apex court dismissed as lacking in merit, an appeal the candidate of Ighodalo, filed to nullify the outcome of the governorship election.

The apex court held that it found no reason to set aside the concurrent judgments of both the Court of Appeal and the Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, which returned Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as the valid winner of the gubernatorial contest.

It held that the Appellant failed to adduce credible and admissible evidence to substantiate his claim that the election was marred by irregularities that included over-voting and substantial non-compliance with provisions of the Electoral Act.

Likewise, it held that the Appellant failed to call relevant witnesses to demonstrate some of the evidence he tendered in support of his case, especially the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BVAS, machines.

It held that some of the proof of evidence, which were tendered from the Bar, were merely dumped on the tribunal without establishing alleged non-compliance in 432 out of a total of 4,519 polling units in the state.(NAN) (www nannews.ng)
