Recently our Youth & Education Minister, Eric Ream, announced that he would be leaving answering a call to New Braunfels Bible Church. Although we wish Eric well in new adventure, we also realize that it is important to have someone leading the Youth program at this important time of year. As a recomendation from the Deacon Body, Keith Guthrie has been approved by the congregation to serve as Interim Youth Minister. Keith has served in this capacity for us in the past and did a great job then. Now he comes to us with his Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education with a History Major. Keith is a second year History Teacher at Mexia Jr. High School and is married to local business woman, Amanda, who is a former coach and Math teacher at Mexia High School. Both are graduates of Mexia High School and East Texas Baptist University.

Look for more about Amanda and Keith soon! In the meantime, come by and welcome them to the Church!

Hello All! As Sunday School Director, I am proud to announce that the new school year for Sunday School will begin on August 29th! All Preschoolers, Children, and Youth Sunday School Classeswill promote (by age/grade level) according to how your Division Director has planned. Preschoolers will be escorted to your new class that morning so meet in your “old” class. Kindergartners will be escorted to the third floor to join the rest of the Children’s Division. Elementary kids will meet in the “Big Room” together and then go to your new classrooms after you meet your new teachers. 6th graders will meet in the “Youth Hall” (room 303) with the rest of the Youth, and after a greeting will meet in the Jr. High room (room 304).

Adult Sunday School Classes may continue to meet as usual. We encourage adult students to find a class that is both comfortable and challenges them spiritually. Age grading in the adult classes is more of guideline for visitors and new students. Here is a list of classes and their basic make-up to help you decide:

Young Adult Division (ages 18-40, roughly)

Doers Class – mostly young couple with small children or no children. Study materials primarily include Explore the Bible. Led by Ray & Connie Jones.

Young Women’s Class – mostly young women (single and married) whose husband does not attend Sunday School. This class also uses the Explore the Bible curriculum and is led by Erni Luna.

Pete’s Class – named for the late Deacon and Sunday School Teacher, Pete Hughes, this is a class primarily comprised of couples and singles with school-aged children. This class uses the Explore the Bible curriculum and is led by Pastor Marcus Sheffield.

Median Adult Class (Ages 41-65, roughly)

Deborah Class – generally geared toward mothers of high school age children and “empty-nesters”. These ladies use an alternate curriculum and are led by Susan Miller.

Friendship Class – is a men’s class counterpart to the Deborah Class and is the spring board of the Baptist Men organization of FBC. This jolly group of guys are led by Walter Van De Weighe and use the Explore the Bible curriculum.

TEL Class – is a group of ladies that are empty-nesters and some are even grandmothers of infants. These ladies are very active in our Church and are led by Donna Spencer using the Explore the Bible curriculum.

Talley Class – named for the long-time class leader and Deacon (amongst everything else he does for FBC), Bob Talley. This class is the couples counterpart of the Deborah and Friendship classes. Most of these folks are empty-nesters and are enjoying the blessings of being a grandparent. They also use the Explore the Bible curriculum.

Singles Class – geared to those that are “single again” regardless of means. The class is led by Paul Yeldell and also uses the Explore the Bible curriculum.

Brown Class – named for former teacher and retired Deacon, Dale Brown. This class ministers to those men whose grand kids are older. The class is led by Dr. Bill Lowry and uses the Explore the Bible curriculum.

Senior Adult Division (over the age of 65)

Women’s Bible Study – designed to minister to our eldest states ladies, this class is led by Dorothy Porter and uses the Explore the Bible curriculum.

Dorcas Class – one of our larger Senior Adult classes, this class for the ladies is led by longtime educator Sara Sims. I would like to put an age group to this class but Sister Sara covers the gambit and makes the class relevant to all ages. The Dorcas Class also uses the Explore the Bible curriculum.

Fidelis Class – led by Mary Margaret Reed using the Explore the Bible curriculum. This class ministers to all senior adult aged ladies.

Ruth Class – led by Pat Pittman also using the Explore the Bible curriculum and is geared to the younger Senior Adult ladies.

Fisherman Class – is a men’s class led by Bill McCulloch using an alternate curriculum and is geared toward the younger retired men.

Hines Class – is the men’s class for our eldest statesmen using a King James version of Explore the Bible and is led by Bill Matthews.

Daniel Class – in an effort to reach the Group Home residents in Mexia, the Daniel class is geared to those adults with learning disabilities. This class is led by Pat Adams and uses the Access curriculum.

For more information about our Sunday School offerings please feel free to send me an email to wclunsfordiii@hotmail.com

Have a great year!

Bill Lunsford

Sunday School Director

At the beginning of the Summer, Pastor Sheffield introduced First Baptist Church to a new community project he titled “Vision 20.” The concept is simple…to follow our calling as a Great Commission Church by reaching out to each and every household in the greater Mexia area. We embarked on step 1 several weeks ago by signing up for different parts of Mexia and leading out in regular “prayer walks” through those areas. The next step is coming soon and it will incorporate Sunday School!

If you have not signed up for a part of Mexia to specifically pray for, it’s not too late! Sign-up sheets are in the Foyer of the Church.

Are you not from Mexia? Well you are from somewhere! Why not pray for the place you live? There are 58 countries in this world where proclaiming to Love of Christ could very easily mean death. We need to pray for those people and governments that God changes hearts and allows us to minister them. If you are interested in widening the impact of Vision 20 beyond Mexia specific, send an email to Brother Bill Lunsford wclunsfordiii@hotmail.com with your info and what community you specifically would like pray for. We will begin an on-line community that parallels this vital initiative of First Baptist Church!
