South by Southwest (SXSW), a conference held in Austin, Texas, is one of the biggest international events on the Web, film, and music. This festival, founded in 1987, was initially created as a springboard for local artists in Austin and surrounding area. The mass arrival of new and high technology companies in the area, combined with the rapid expansion of the Internet and multimedia, prompted the organization to change the nature of the festival in the 1990s. Today, SXSW is a platform for launching emerging products.

New trends

Whatever is showcased at SXSW is generally an indicator of what will be used on a wide scale in years to come. For example, it was at the 2007 festival that Twitter really took off. More recently, Foursquare (geolocation application) and Storify (social media aggregator) were launched during the 2009 and 2011 festivals, respectively.

The 2012 festival, held March 9 to 14, was no different than earlier festivals. Again this year, nearly 5,000 panels and workshops were offered to the 14,000 delegates present. We noted a few elements we thought would be relevant to museums or other heritage institutions, which can lead to increased socialization amongst visitors.

Mobile applications

The trend pointed to mobile. The numerous applications presented “helped users make social discoveries” by using the devices’ geolocation features. Using the Foursquare principle (I am here, you are there), these applications aim to forge ties between people with common interests by sharing information. If one person using the application happens to be near someone who has the same interests, they will be informed. Some of these new mobile applications, including Glancee, Banjo and Sonar, were showcased at SXSW.

Highlight takes things one step further by analyzing the content of Facebook and Twitter accounts, as well as the user’s favourite blogs. These applications could be useful to the museum, because they help the institution create an “omnipresence” in the user’s social life. Users who have shared interests and who are near one another can meet. Thus, the physical and digital realms come together.

One highly popular application at the conference was Pixable. Pixable is not a photo sharing application, but rather a photo aggregator. Through Pixable, users can view their Facebook friends’ and Twitter subscribers’ photos in one place and sort them into categories (for example, My favourite museums). For photo-sharing, Instagram, which is now available for Android, is extremely popular (with nearly 50 million users). A number of museums already use it, including the Brooklyn Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Arts (SFMOMA) and others.

Like the festivals before it, the 2012 festival captivated attendees with its line-up of surprises and new products. Some of the workshops from the “Interactive” component can be heard on the festival website.

Currently, Pinterest is the fastest growing social media website in the world. In fact, it now ranks as the 3rd most popular site of its kind, behind Facebook and Twitter. Launched in March 2010, Pinterest already draws in more online traffic than LinkedIn and MySpace. According to comScore, a company that tracks technological trends, Pinterest counted 17.8 million unique visitors in February 2012, a whopping 52% increase over January.

Functionality

Pinterest is best described as a virtual pinboard, where users can post interesting pictures and then provide comments. At first glance, the site resembles a giant scrap-book of photos and videos, all arranged into collections. The visually-oriented site therefore allows visitors with similar interests to exchange ideas and socialize. Mobile applications have also been developed for the iPhone and Android.

Yet, Pinterest is more than just a photo-sharing website, it is also a bookmarking tool. When visitors to a website “pin” a picture in their browsers, Pinterest creates a link that points back to the source page. By sharing links and organizing them around particular themes (e.g. a hobby, an object, a subject), users can generate a considerable number of referrals for the originating website.

Those referrals can offer attractive opportunities for Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Some sites have incorporated the “Pin It” feature to their web pages, giving users the ability to easily share the image on Pinterest. However, the ease in which users can repost copyrighted material has raised concerns. Organizations that don’t wish to have their content “pinned” can add a special html meta tag to their pages to prevent their images being added to Pinterest.

Museum Strategy

Obviously, the value of any social network relies in large part on the number of users it has registered. In a short period of time, Pinterest has been elevated from relative obscurity and is now garnering considerable media attention. But with so many social networking tools coming onto the market, how can museums stay ahead of the social media curve? Re-purposing content for a whole new online experience like Pinterest can be time consuming.

Museums looking to expand their social media presence could create online version of their exhibits that users could share and discuss using Pinterest. By allowing visitors to “pin” their favourite pieces, it is a way for museums to encourage engagement or even to create interest in items available at the gift shops. In Canada, organizations such as Canadian Museum of Nature and the Board of Montréal Museums Directors have already created profiles.

But other museums may wish to wait before joining Pinterest. Although Pinterest’s growth has been stunning, whether the site has the critical mass of mainstream users is yet undetermined. But at the very least, museums should try to lock up their own Pinterest usernames, in anticipation of possibly creating a stronger online presence in the future.

Oh, Canada, an exhibit of contemporary art from nearly every Canadian province and territory, opens on May 27, 2012 at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA).

Oh, Canada, an exhibit of contemporary art from nearly every Canadian province and territory, opens on May 27, 2012 at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA). The museum is located in North Adams, MA, about 3 hours east of Boston and 1 hour west of Albany, New York. Oh, Canada showcases the vast expanse of art made in the country, spanning all media and crossing generations and geography.

Americans will be able to discover Canadian contemporary art

The exhibit will run until April 1, 2013. Oh, Canada will showcase the work of 62 Canadian artists, including several major new commissions. According to the museum, this exhibit will mark the first large-scale survey of contemporary Canadian artists outside Canada. Oh, Canada will occupy 14,000 square feet (1,300 square meters) and is sponsored in part by the Canada Council for the Arts.

Focusing mostly on artists less recognized outside of Canada, Oh, Canada provides a fresh glimpse of a vibrant art scene that is too little known in the United States. “At a moment in the international art scene that is particularly attuned to the exotically remote and embracing of ‘anti-aesthetics’, this is a show of art from close to the United States, often beautifully made,” said Joseph Thompson, director of MASS MoCA. “Canada’s proximity, and shared North Americanism, is a source of interesting friction. It’s so close and familiar, yet we sometimes barely know it.”

Fitting Tribute to Canadian Art

Themes of landscape and identity, memory and politics, gender, and the vernacular of the mundane are reinterpreted in installations, music, conceptual art, painting, and craft making. The exhibition will be accompanied by live events at MASS MoCA focusing on Canadian acts. A comprehensive full-color 400-page catalogue co-published by MASS MoCA and The MIT Press will accompany the exhibit and provide insights into Canada’s thriving contemporary cultural scene.

From its past as a factory complex, MASS MoCA was transformed to an exciting exhibit and performance space that opened in 1999. The huge exhibit spaces of this extraordinary venue, with its warm brick and stone walls and two-storey-high windows, capture the breadth and spirit of our country.

Trends in Mobile Technology

Nectarios Economakis
Agency Lead
Google Canada

During the Mobile Bootcamp held on April 24, 2012, Nectarios Economakis from Google shared relevant information on trends in mobile technology, mobile device usage and tips to best take advantage of Canadians’ mobile search habits. His main points are as follows.

Mobile Internet access – A mass phenomenon by 2013

By 2013, Internet access using mobile devices will surpass access through personal computers. Mobile requests on Google’s search engine have been growing since the arrival of smartphones and tablets. What was considered technology for pioneer users just a few years ago is now clearly set to become a mass phenomenon. Growing numbers of mobile users are viewing videos, playing interactive games, doing searches, staying connected on social media and making greater use of mobile technologies for their purchasing process.

Consumer habits that combine the real with the virtual

Mobile user behaviour is particular not only with regard to Google searches and daily access periods, but also the manner in which people consume every day.

A large part of searches and shopping with mobile devices is done locally or in nearby locations. Geolocation, QR codes, Wi-Fi access and a broader range of local offerings build bridges between off-line and online shopping. The consumer has immediate access to information (opinions, prices, promotions, local alerts) and the means to conduct transactions (Google Wallet and online payment in general). In short, the smartphone has become a shopping tool that facilitates and speeds up the purchasing process.

It is worthwhile for museums to seize this local market

The growing importance of mobile devices in the everyday lives of our target market cannot be ignored. People shop, search, use and share information differently, and museums must adapt to this new reality if they wish to maintain the interest of their clienteles and win over local and nearby markets. The big winners will be the museums that promote their products on the entertainment market and local mobile culture. Whether museums choose a mobilized website, develop a mobile application, establish a partnership with Google Art, post the museum’s floor plan on Google Map, launch a mobile Adwords campaign, improve search engine optimization (SEO) or maintain a presence on social or geolocation applications, the important thing is to be present, active and alert.

Goggle tools, such as Google Analytics and Webmaster, provide a better understanding of mobile users’ behaviour on a site, enabling the implementation of necessary adjustments to leverage the information.

As Nectarios said at the outset of his presentation: It’s not too late to get ahead.

Learning in the 21st Century: What the Digital Natives are saying about it

Sophie Godbout
President
nomad-e-learning

Digital Natives are growing up in the 21st century, having technology such as mobile devices woven into their lives from an early age. Learning is faster, more diverse, and the social and educational reach is seemingly infinite. The mobility of digital technologies creates intriguing opportunities for new forms of learning because they change the nature of the physical relations between teachers, learners, and the objects of learning. Even the traditions of distance learning cannot offer the flexibility of these new kinds of interactions, so the rise of interest in ‘m-learning’ is understandable. Educators, museum staff, private businesses and government are beginning to recognize that mobile technology can be a valuable teaching tool and this is changing the face of learning at a rate that has never before been seen.

A few extra notes:

m-learning is important for access, personalization, engagement and inclusion, control over learning, ownership, and the ability to demand things, i.e. meeting the rights of the learner.

Features like control, ownership, and communication with peers all can contribute to suggest why m-learning might be ‘fun’. ‘Learning-incontext’ and ‘continuity between contexts’ are also aspects of ownership and control which explain why these properties might make learning easier and effective.

If we tried to characterize mobile technologies as mediating tools in the learning process, we would need to address:

the learner and their personal relationships (peer groups, teachers, etc.),

what the learner is learning (topic, relationship to prior experience, etc.), and

where and when learners are learning.

Gain a Mobile Presence ‘On the Cheap’

Sheila Carey
Audience and Program Analyst
Canadian Heritage Information Network

Sheila Carey’s presentation focused on inexpensive ways that museums can take advantage of already existing services and apps to engage museum visitors using mobile phones. She began by looking at QR codes, and their uses and abuses. Some good practices for using QR codes in the museum space include:

a space in which users will be able to get a good data connection (to Wi-Fi or their data plan);

appropriate sized QR code for the information within (for long URLs use a shortening service first to avoid dense QR codes if they are small);

Mobilized content;

Sufficient lighting to scan easily;

Signage promoting the code and instructions for scanning;

Compelling content behind the code;

Alternate ways to access the information (e.g. a URL);

Sheila moved on to describe Historypin, which allows users to pin content (pictures, audio, video, stories) to specific locations. Taking advantage of a project like Historypin allows museums, libraries and galleries to add images to the Historypin site and app as part of a larger collection.

Finally, she looked at Foursquare, a location-based social media app that awards points for visiting specific locations and pointed out that most of the institutions present had a presence on Foursquare that could be worth monitoring, and that offers a way to offer engagement to visitors already using this platform.

In the case of all apps and 3rd party services, although they are free to use, users should read the content agreements about any content contributed and take into account staff time in creating content for an monitoring these services.

The New Mobile Frontier

Joël Pomerleau
Director of Platform Development
National Film Board of Canada

When the National Film Board (NFB) application was launched, mobility— particularly mobile applications— was still unknown territory. Development required only imagining what could be done and inventing new rules.

The digital shift was part of the 2008–2012 strategic business plan. Once a culture of innovation was introduced and consensus was reached on risk taking, the NFB.ca digital distribution platform was launched in 2009.

The digital shift, which is part of the 2008-2012 Strategic Plan, introduced a culture of innovation

2009 – Launch of NFB.ca, a digital distribution platform

High level of risk taking; the principle of fail early, fail hard is confirmed

Multiple platforms and accessibility considerations

The iPhone application was close behind and also launched in 2009, at the low cost of $10,000.

Considerations leading to the design were:

What is mobility in the context of media consumption?

What place do we want to occupy in people’s media consumption?

How do we respond to directors’ concerns about the presentation of their “full-scale” work on a pocket-size screen?

The Web and mobile experience created by the NFB:

Simple and easy to use

Focused on a value proposal / main user benefit: viewing films

Facilitate consumption in a timely way: download now, view later

App popularity was driven by users (viral marketing)

One important takeaway was that when planning for a mobile experience, realize that different platforms are different ecosystems, not just in how media is displayed, but how, where and when it is viewed and experienced. One might also consider other platforms that do not fall into the category of the “usual suspects” of mobile, such as the Musée de Louvre’s use of the Nintendo 3DS game console to enhance visitor experience.

With respect to the future of mobile, devices are being renewed at 6-8 months, and what is a roadblock today could well be an opportunity for innovators down the road. But if all of your “ingredients” are mobile-ready, then start now.

Mobile technology and cultural institutions

Considerations:

What fundamental value do we give the user (e.g. conservation, contextualization, exploration, knowledge)?

Who are the intermediaries between our experience/value proposal and our users?

Does this experience necessarily need to take place in a specific location (city museum, urban museum itinerary)?

How can our value proposal be dematerialized, how can we extend the emotional experience that was created (e.g. the MurMur experience)?

Mobile Apps at the Musée de la civilisation

Ana-Laura Baz
Digital Projects Officer
Musée de la civilisation in Quebec City

Approach

The Musée de la civilisation (MCQ) uses its mobile applications to offer users experiences associated with exhibits and their content. The applications are in “native” format and available only on the iOS platform (Apple). The Museum’s programming is delivered to mobile users through the Museum’s mobile website.

Application development, which is directed by the digital distribution services (Service de la diffusion numérique), requires the cooperation of a number of internal and external resources, including the public services (Service au public), which depends on Museum volunteers.

A challenge for volunteers

Visitors rent the MCQ‘s iPods, on which the applications are pre-loaded. Volunteers (often retirees) are responsible for the service. Intense training is required to ensure they have the skills to do the job. This technology can be quite intimidating for 70-year-olds! Fortunately, things go smoothly and volunteers are invaluable in helping visitors use the iPods. It should be noted that the Museum has not experienced device breakage or theft, as ID is required for their rental.

Applications

Human Copyright, 2009

Guide to a temporary exhibit on human thought.

Provides audio interviews. User commentary and sharing functionalities were not successful at the time. Too innovative?

MCQ, 2011

The application provides a 60-minute tour of the museum and includes a participatory experience (games) that changes according to the temporary exhibit. The challenge: when the application is updated, users lose part of the known content, which is replaced by new content. Another challenge is application size: 300 Mb is much too big! A new, two-part downloading process (iTunes App Store, then content from the Museum’s server) will be implemented in June 2012.

Parcours LSQ, 2011

The history of Quebec told in Quebec sign language (langue des signes québécoise – LSQ) and delivered by video. The project was developed in response to a specific access request. The low download rate confirms the need to align the development of mobile applications with a specific plan for promotion, which has not yet been done for this application. An evaluation would be useful to determine whether mobile devices can adequately deliver content to people with specific needs while maintaining the relevance and experience that mobile applications can provide.

ROM iPhone App

Ryan Dodge
Royal Ontario Museum

Ryan spoke about the iPhone app that the museum launched in August 2011.

The app had four initial goals, to:

Merge the website, audio guide and pod/vodcast content into one platform;

Provide some sort of wayfinding solution for the museum;

Provide visitors with a focussed app that aided a physical exhibit;

Get into the mobile realm.

The ROM is an app 1.0; it is basically an app version of the Web presence and doesn’t engage people in conversation. It is one-way communication.

The talk also mentioned additional goals of the app, which were:

Engage new audiences;

Promote the ROM brand in new ways;

Meet people where they are;

Content delivery.

A key takeaway from Ryan’s talk was the importance of collaboration. The mobile world moves very fast, and museums need to share lessons learned.

What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the art and science of increasing the visibility of Web pages by boosting their ranking in the organic (free) section of search engine result pages. Tactics include optimizing Web architecture, optimizing content writing, and community building (link solicitation, social media colonization, and socialization).

Optimized Web Architecture

The architecture of a website has a considerable impact on search engine optimization results. A poor architecture will limit the number of pages found and indexed by robots – regardless of all the optimization efforts, the pages remain difficult to find.

Robots love and derive their primary sustenance from text. The goal of stellar architecture is to provide text and multimedia content to robots in a format that is simple and easy to read. Information technology professionals must work closely with those responsible for search engine optimization. Together they will create a Web architecture that will provide textual content access to search engines within a proactive user design.

Several aspects of architecture must be considered to achieve this objective. Some of them are listed in our Tips and Tools on Optimized Website Architecture.

Optimized Web Content Writing

We all want the content we create to be seen, read, and appreciated by our target audience. Good preparation must precede writing to maximize the visibility of Web pages. Otherwise, time and effort will be wasted to create Web pages on a subject that no one searches for, or that no one can find.

Furthermore, using a specific writing technique will maximize the visibility of pages on the Web and the ease with which Internet users can access the content. Find out more about this SEO technique through our Tips and Tools on Optimized Web Writing.

Community Building

Community building is an online activity to support the creation or enhancement of communities with common interests that are closely related to a website’s content. Community building uses three main tactics: link solicitation, social media colonization, and socialization.

The more active you are with community building, the larger your community will grow. Find out more about this SEO technique through our Tips and Tools on Community Building.

A good SEO strategy will consider these three pillars or tactics described above. You won’t succeed if you are working on one tactic alone and leaving the two others aside.

On the right side of this article, you will find resourceful links on training, tools, resources and business cases that will help you to better understand and benefit from a well-thought-out SEO strategy.

According to a new survey, Internet users in Canada spend more time online than anywhere else in the world. The study reveals that Canadians devote an average of 45 hours per month to surfing the Web. Also, social networking accounts for 16% of the time Canadians spent online.

Social Networking

The study, released in March 2012 by the firm comScore, compares online usage from around the world. The report shows that social networking is now the leading online activity among Canadians. That places social networking ahead of other popular Internet activities, such as searching for news and information, emailing, instant messaging, playing games and shopping.

From 2010 to 2011, the time Canadians spent on social networking increased 32%. Indeed, the growth of some websites has been astounding over the last year:

Facebook: +20%

Twitter: +98%

LinkedIn: +70%

Tumblr: +382%

Pinterest: +2,038% (from Q2 2010)

Smartphones

In March of 2011, 33% of all mobile phones in Canada were smartphones. In December 2011, that proportion had skyrocketed to 45%. Presumably, by now, more than 50% of Canadian mobiles phones would be smartphones.

Other Findings

Other findings relevant to the Canadian museum community include:

In the month of December 2011, 1.4M Canadians scanned QR codes, which represents 8% of all mobile subscribers.

Similarly, from 2010 to 2011, Canadians viewed 170% more videos on YouTube. In fact, about half of all online videos streamed in Canada were from YouTube.

Control over ad placement is a major concern for organizations that advertise online. According to an American survey also released by comScore, 72% of online marketing campaigns reported having their ads displayed next to content that was deemed “not brand safe”.

Conceived by the search engine giant, this initiative is a compilation of artwork images from galleries around the world. The AGO has decided to make available 58 pieces of art online in amazingly high-definition. The technology used to photograph the art allows for a level of detail rarely seen before.

The Google Art Project was launched last year and has since expanded to include 151 museums around the world. Initially the site included just 1,000 objects, but has now grown to include over 30,000 works of art. Most museums include background information about the artists and the pieces. To protect copyright, users are prevented from printing or copying the images.

Some museums offer a 360 degree virtual tour, which uses a technology similar to the Street View function in Google Maps. In the future, Google hopes to expand the Art Project to offer opportunities for artists working with new and emerging technologies.
