Hearse arrives at NJ funeral home handling Houston

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — A hearse under heavy police escort arrived late Monday at a funeral home officials said was handling the arrangements for late pop star Whitney Houston.

The hearse traveled from Teterboro Airport, where officials had told The Associated Press Houston's body would arrive Monday night on a flight from the Los Angeles area.

Several officials familiar with funeral planning said arrangements were being made by Newark's Whigham Funeral Home, which handled the 2003 funeral of Houston's father.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Even dog actors can get awards in Tinseltown, and six pooches collected prizes at the inaugural Golden Collar Awards.

The ceremony Monday at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel proceeded like a traditional Hollywood-style awards show, with actors including "NCIS" star Pauley Perrette and "Hot in Cleveland" star Wendie Malick presenting trophies for the best dog performances on the big and small screens.

Uggie, the four-legged star of "The Artist," was named top dog in a movie.

NEW YORK (AP) — Luxury fashion still caters to movie stars, high-powered businesswomen and ladies who lunch, but designers are starting to show interest in that generation's daughters.

Halfway through New York Fashion Week, familiar runway themes like military tailoring, old-school rock 'n' roll, and Hollywood Golden Age glam are showing tweaks designed to appeal to younger eyes: the double-breasted coat in shiny patent leather, tweed suits infused with metallics and leather substituted in silhouettes that used to be silk.

"New customers are getting into luxury fashion in a way they weren't before the recession," said Ed Jay, senior vice president of American Express Business Insights.

Longtime clients who bought full-ticket designer clothes before the economy soured have proven loyal, but they aren't buying as much as they used to, Jay said.

Dancers boogie in bid for Soul Train line record

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Hundreds of people boogied, strutted and pop-and-locked in Philadelphia in a bid to set a new record for the world's largest "Soul Train" line.

Dancers formed a long line in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art on Monday to recreate a signature of the long-running television program in which dancers form two lines with a space in the middle for each dancer to strut down.

Philadelphia resident Sheila Simmons, one of the organizers, said a total of 327 people took part, a mark that would eclipse the official Guinness record of 211 set last year by a group of Berkeley High School students, staff and alumni.

"We can't say we've broken the record because Guinness has to examine all the evidence, but that's our count," Simmons said Monday night.

The event was to honor Don Cornelius, the silken-voiced "Soul Train" host who died earlier this month.
