Muppets creator Henson's items head to NYC museum

NEW YORK (AP) — The Muppets may have taken Manhattan, but they're getting a spiffy new home in Queens.

Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Bert and Ernie of "Sesame Street" fame, the stars of "Fraggle Rock" and other puppets, costumes and items from throughout Muppets creator Jim Henson's career have been donated to the Museum of the Moving Image, which is building a new gallery to house them, the institution announced Tuesday.

Encompassing almost 400 items ranging from original puppets to behind-the-scenes footage, the gift is a boon for the 25-year-old museum, which saw attendance skyrocket in 2011 and 2012 during a temporary exhibit of Henson's work.

Sorrentino, Bruni Tedeschi bring Italy to Cannes

CANNES, France (AP) — La dolce vita came to Cannes on Tuesday, thanks to a pair of films set in Italy exploring lives of affluent ennui.

Paolo Sorrentino's "The Great Beauty" and Valeria Bruni Tedeschi's "A Castle in Italy" both feature wealthy characters whose lives have an emptiness at their center.

Bruni Tedeschi — the only woman among the 20 directors competing for Cannes' Palme d'Or and the sister of former French first lady Carla Bruni — focuses on a Franco-Italian clan facing the loss of its crumbling mansion, its art treasures and possibly its future.

Bruni Tedeschi, who stars and co-wrote the script, incorporated many elements of her own family's life into the story, including her brother's death from AIDS. She cast her mother, Marisa Borini, as the mother of her character, Louise, and her ex-partner Louis Garrel as Louise's younger lover.

The director said using her own life and family members in her work was natural.

"For me, work is a form of therapy," she told reporters.

Justin Bieber's pet monkey seized by German authorities in March officially became the property of that country on Tuesday after the pop star failed to meet a deadline to provide required vaccination documents and import papers.

The capuchin monkey, named Mally, had been in the care of German customs officials at a shelter since the 19-year-old Bieber landed in Munich on March 28 during his European concert tour.

LAS VEGAS — As he recovers from his last big “Hangover,” Justin Bartha is preparing for another kind of debauchery in the upcoming film about the 1970s New York punk scene, “CBGB.”

Bartha appears Thursday as Doug, the frequently kidnapped member of “The Wolfpack” in “The Hangover, Part III,” the final installment in director Todd Phillips' enthusiastically raunchy comedy series co-starring Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis.

Since Doug is the best-behaved of all the main characters, Bartha's upcoming role as Stiv Bators, the notorious, hard-living and emaciated singer from the pioneering punk band Dead Boys, represents a wild stretch from his most recognized role.

“One of the things we love most about what we do is playing wildly different characters,” Bartha said during interviews at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas for “The Hangover, Part III.”

“So yes, Stiv Bators is probably the opposite of Doug.
