Group Prayer Time

“This, then, is how you should pray…” - Matthew 6:9

Prayer can be difficult for anyone. Prayer-time can be especially difficult in small group. There may be people in your group that have never prayed at all; why in the world would they want to pray with others? Here are three tips that will help make prayer-time in your group special as it should be.

1. Make sure the group understands why you are praying together. Take time to talk through verses like James 5:16 or Colossians 1:9-14. The bible makes it clear the value of praying for one another. Make sure that prayer-time is focused on the personal needs of the group instead of extended family, co-workers and pets. When everyone understands the mutual benefit of prayer together, they will be more likely to embrace any awkwardness they may be feeing.

2. Make sure the group knows that praying publically is not the point. The reason many people are intimidated by prayer with others is that prayer is often publically modeled as a scripted, ornamented, formal speech given to impress those listening. You, as the leader, can set the tone by modeling simple, heartfelt prayer for your group much like the way Jesus modeled prayer for His disciples (Matthew 6:5-13).

3. Occasionally subdivide the group further for prayer-time by separating the men and women. Not only will this serve to create strong bonds in the group, it will also help eliminate some of the awkwardness people in your group may be feeling. As people get more comfortable you might consider having spouses pray for each other or have parents pray for each other’s children. Be creative.

Prayer can be difficult in small group. But there is value in praying together. If your only experience with praying in group is blessing the food, it’s probably time to take prayer to another level. Your group will be stronger for it.

Don’t Do Life Alone- The Merritt’s Group Story

Jesus works in the lives of those who are wiling to be in community with each other and help each other grow in faith. That is the story of the Merritt small group. God used the faith of this diverse group of people to develop friendships, have fun and take next steps together. The group has grown to over 30 people as they continue to be there for each other and ask God what is next for their group.

In this video, Will and Melissa share their heart about how small groups are a powerful way to be a part of the work that God wants to accomplish in the lives of his people. At the end of the day it is not about who is leading the group or what your expectation is for the group. Real life change happens when a group of people focus on Jesus and are willing to take next steps together.

Jesus: Servant Leader

Jesus is the greatest leader there is. In fact, Jesus is the perfect leader. So, what can we learn about leading from Christ's example? Jesus modeled leadership for us because He "did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant". Jesus came not to be served, but to serve. Jesus defined leadership as serving. So it will be for those who lead well. God purposed leadership this way. Jesus promises us in Mark 10:43, "But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all." Great leaders do not consider their position something to be grasped, but instead they stoop low to humbly serve those they lead. Serving = Leading. Great leaders do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, and they count others more significant than themselves (Philippians 2:3-7). Leaders lead well by serving more. As a leader, where are you serving?
