The main way that our readers subscribe to this site and receive updates is our RSS feed.

What is RSS?

RSS is a technology that is being used by millions of web users around the world to keep track of their favorite websites.

In the ‘old days’ of the web, to keep track of updates on a website you had to ‘bookmark’ websites in your browser and manually return to them on a regular basis to see what had been added.

The Problems with Bookmarking

You as the web surfer had to do all the work

It can get complicated when you are trying to track many websites at once

You miss information when you forget to check your bookmarks

You end up seeing the same information over and over again on sites that don’t update very often

RSS Changes Everything

What if you could tell a website to let you know every time that they update? In a sense, this is what RSS does for you.

RSS flips things around a little and is a technology that provides you with a method of getting relevant and up to date information sent to you for you to read in your own time. It saves you time and helps you to get the information you want quickly after it was published.

RSS stands for ‘Really Simple Syndication’. Many people describe it as a ‘news feed’ that you subscribe to.

I find the ’subscription’ description helpful. It’s like subscribing to a magazine that is delivered to you periodically but instead of it coming in your physical mail box each month when the magazine is published it is delivered to your ‘RSS Reader’ every time your favorite website updates.

How RSS actually technically works is probably a lesson for another day but the key today is for you to understand why it’s good and how to use it.

Let me say right up front that I’m not the most technically savvy guy going around - but even I can use RSS. At first I found it a little strange to make the change from bookmarking to RSS but I found that when I started that I just couldn’t stop.

How to Use RSS

Get an RSS Reader

The first thing you’ll want to do if you’re getting into reading sites via RSS is to hook yourself up with an RSS Feed Reader.

There are many feed readers going around with a variety of approaches and features - however a good place to start is with a couple of free and easy to use web based ones like Google Reader and Bloglines.

Either one will do if you’re starting out (I use Bloglines) - as I say there are many others to choose from but to get started either of these are fairly easy to use and will help you work out the basics of RSS.

Both of these feed readers work a little like email. As you subscribe to feeds you’ll see that unread entries from the sites you’re tracking will be marked as bold. As you click on them you’ll see the latest update and can read it right there in the feed reader. You are given the option to click through to the actual site or move onto the next unread item - marking the last one as ‘read’.

The best way to learn how to use either Google Reader or Bloglines is to simply subscribe to some feeds and give it a go. Both have helpful help sections to get you up and running.

The more attention we pay to looking after the needs of our mind, body, and spirit, the more effective we will become as internet marketers.

Conversely, if we are out of balance in one area, this will have a negative impact on other aspects of our lives.

For example, by keeping our bodies fit through exercise and healthy eating, we will feel more confident, energetic, and hopefully have clearer minds.

But if our emotions are out of sorts and we are feeling stressed or anxious, we will have a hard time being productive and efficient in our online marketing efforts.

To build your network marketing business, should you focus on recruiting or sponsoring?

It’s an extremely important question, and over the past 10 years, I’ve come to my own personal conclusion on this topic.

The first thing we should recognize is that there is no ONE right way when it comes to sponsoring and recruiting.

Everyone has their own style and approach, and I'll share mine with you:

But first, let's set the stage…

I was as bad as you could be when it came to recruiting for almost six years.

Calling me shy would have been a massive understatement. The thought of picking up the phone and talking to a lead made me physically tremble.

I’d sit at my desk, staring at the phone for hours. I’d make endless trips to Office Depot to buy that one last supply I needed to ensure my desk was organized and ready for business.

I’d wait until I heard that next training call, or to make sure my sponsor was available for a 3-way if needed before my fingers every touched the dial pad.

It’s like trying to sum up the courage to call the girl you like in grade school – but now you’ve got to do it every day for a living.

I was my sponsors’ worst nightmare because they knew I had the talent and ability to achieve incredible things, but I always let my own fears and demons get in the way.

If you haven’t been in that position yet, where you just want to stick your hands out and shake someone senselessly because they just can’t snap out of their own mental prison… you will.

Everyone needs to be in a constant state of improvement, because if you haven’t figured it out yet, this industry is utterly ruthless and will expose every weakness you have to the world.

That’s the nature of entrepreneurialism.

Now for most people, prospecting and recruiting are completely emotional events driven by fear:

Fear of rejection… What if this person calls me an idiot, yells at me or hangs up? What if my friends make fun of me? What if I get my upline on the phone for a follow up call and they never show?

Fear of failure… I spent my last dime on these leads, what if I can’t sponsor someone? I told my upline I’d be his best distributor this month. What will he think of me if I don’t produce at all? I told my family I’d make it happen no matter what it takes… What if I fail them?

Fear of success… What if I do sponsor someone? I don’t know what to do with them and I could let them down. It would be all my fault. What if I build a large organization and they ask me to start leading people or speaking in public? What if my friends resent me for making more money than them?

Yes, this industry is ruthless. In the world of capitalistic entrepreneurialism, it always has been, and always will be the survival of the fittest.

Believe it or not, that’s one of the greatest gifts you’ll ever receive during your life.

It will allow you to truly see yourself for who you are – where you’re strong and where you’re weak, which then gives you the ability to transform yourself into who you want to ultimately become.

The sky is the limit – IF – you’re willing to pay the price.

My fears gripped me and controlled my life for years. I was at their mercy and my life was truly hell because of it.

After graduating from college, I packed up everything I owned into a small pickup truck and drove from Texas to San Diego, California.

All I had was a dream and a successful upline mentor named Stu who was willing to show me the ropes.

At this point, I had been in this industry for five years and never sponsored a distributor or customer outside my family tree.

Now it was “do or die” time. School was over. I was on my own. It felt like my entire future was riding on this trip.

I found the only apartment in town that I could afford and unpacked the few belongings I had: my desk, computer, books, bike, bed, guitar, phone, and a lamp.

My sponsor and I had met a few days before and things were looking up. We had an incredible marketing plan in place and all I had to do is follow up with the leads it was going to generate.

A massive radio campaign had been produced, meetings were being held in town each week, and I had secured a strategic position within the group that had the potential to put me in the millionaire category within a year or two.

I fell asleep that night determined and confident. Things were going to be different this time. Little did I know we were hours away from waking up to a brave new world.

The date was September 10th, 2001.

We all know what happened next. Our big plans disappeared overnight, the investors left, and people did their best to deal with the massive question mark hanging over the entire world.

As you can imagine, it’s hard to sell optimism and opportunity during such tragedy. Business was the last thing on anyone’s mind.

I toughed it out working for $8.00/hr at Best Buy selling computers. The business never took off and I never conquered my fear of prospecting.

Four months later I packed everything up and moved back to Texas. I had failed myself on all accounts but one…

For some sick reason that most people, (other than you), will never understand, I wasn’t ready to give up. I couldn’t spend the rest of my life working for someone else, and still look at myself in the mirror every morning.

I had to conquer my fear of the phone and I had to do something different this time if it was going to happen.

I came to realize that people are funny creatures. Most of us are willing to do things for other people that we’re completely unwilling to do for ourselves.

If I hired you to call leads everyday for $30,000 per month, would you do it? Of course you would.

Then why are you still unwilling and maybe even afraid to do it for yourself right now?

Having a “job” or assignment takes the responsibility off of us. We’re willing to make those calls now because “we” are not the ones getting rejected… It’s the company we work for.

We can separate our ego from the process in a job.

I took advantage of that and made my first dive into the corporate world as a physician recruiter.

It was a strategic move…

My “job”?

Cold call 200-300 doctors' offices per day and try to get past the gatekeeper to speak to the physician.

I wasn’t able to make those calls for myself, but I made them for my boss.

Within five days I was a completely new person.

My fear of the phone was finally dead.

Months later I’d use the same tactic to conquer my fear of personal selling. I took a position as an outside sales person for a wireless broadband start-up.

My job was to get into the big Dallas highrises and knock on doors, starting from the top floor, working my way down until I made it through or was kicked out by security.

The plan had worked, and the old Mike Dillard was dead.

Months later I would meet my first real sponsoring mentor, Mark Wieser.

With Mark’s help, I would go on to build my first real organization, personally sponsoring dozens of distributors in months.

Update Your Ping List To Instantly Create 100's of Quality Backlinks

Link building is a key ingredient in achieving high search engine rankings and driving tons of traffic to your website.

If you have a WordPress blog, one of the easiest ways to create quality backlinks is with your ping list, also known as your RSS update service.

All WordPress blogs are preset to submit new posts to multiple RSS directories in the form of an excerpt of your content along with a backlink.

This means that every time you publish a post, you instantly create new backlinks.

You have probably heard that you have to be in affiliate programs to get ahead on the internet.

We all hear about people making huge incomes being a "super affiliate" and how these programs are the greatest thing since sliced bread.

But what IS an affiliate program and can we really make any money with them? Sometimes it's very confusing.

To help clear up that confusion, following are some basic definitions along with a checklist that is useful when examining any program.

What Is "Being An Affiliate"?

Being an affiliate simply means that you sell someone else's product and earn a commission when you do so.

Webster's Dictionary defines the word 'affiliate' this way:

Affiliate: [verb] To associate as a member.

That's exactly correct. When you become an affiliate you are associating with the product or service you will be selling. You are loaning them your reputation. Don't forget that.

Every email you send, every contact you make, reflects on you. And the company's action will reflect on you as well, so choose wisely.

So, being an affiliate is simply a fancy Internet way of saying that you are going to be a commissioned salesperson.

Does Affiliate Marketing Really Work?

Yes, it does. It is true that you can make very good money with affiliate programs, but it is not automatic.

You must still understand the process of marketing and do the work. And it's not always quick.

But if you choose great programs, do some of the work (and take advantage of the tools they offer) you can grow a powerful income in a short period of time.

It's equally true that you can waste tons of time and money on them and your reputation can suffer if you don't choose carefully.

Here is my checklist for choosing affiliate programs. I hope it works for you too.

Affiliate Marketing Success Checklist

1. Make sure the product being offered matches you.

If your passion is embroidery, you probably won't do too well with car parts sites. Stick with what you know at first and, once you learn how to promote on the internet, move on to different products.

2. Check it out. Don't just jump in because it's easy.

Ask yourself this question, "Is the product or service you are affiliating with something you would bring to your best friend?"

If not, you may want to keep looking.

3. Talk to current affiliates.

Ask for a list of happy affiliates. Ask them some key questions such as:

did they get the help and support promised?
are they being paid on time? You get the idea.

4. Look long term.

If your first arrangement doesn't pan out, don't give up. Many people on the net are making excellent incomes with affiliate programs. You can too.

5. Go for quality.

Make a checklist of everything you want, find two who meet the criteria, and go all out with those two. Remember that it will be your reputation on the line.

6. How well do they sell?

You need to ask how well the product or service you will be promoting "converts".

Conversion is simply the number of people per 100 who buy something. At the Directory of Ezines we convert 7 of every 100 visitors to buyers.

You can expect this number to range from 0.5% to about 10%. Anything higher or lower and you need to be careful about them telling you the truth.

Also, be aware that "hot" products convert well while they are hot but conversion drops with time. So be sure to get current conversion figures.

7. What is the cookie duration?

Most affiliate programs track using "cookies" that are set on the visitor's machine. You need to know how long this cookie lasts and if it can be overwritten.

The reason this is important is that people don't buy the first time. If the cookie life is short (say 90 days) and someone you refer buys six months down the road you lose your commission.

It's the same if the cookie can be overwritten. If it can, then someone who first learned about product X from you, but clicks another link to buy, will not earn you the commission you deserve.

8. Do you earn "backend" commissions?

This means, "Do you get paid when someone you refer buys a second product?"

This is vitally important. People often buy two, three or more products from one site. You should earn commissions for every product they buy.

9. Do you earn renewal commissions?

If you send someone to a site where they pay a monthly or quarterly fee, do you get paid every time or just once? You should get paid every time.

10. Do they support you?

Most people don't know, or have the time, to write ads and create banners or graphics.

You should expect the program you join to provide these tools as well as some training on how to sell their products.

My favorite tool for finding great products to sell as an affiliate is Affiliates Alert.

They offer a free version, which does an excellent job. As soon as you've earned some affiliate income, you might want to consider the Pro version, as I did. You can get the free version here.

Without a doubt, using ClickBank to find products is the smart choice for a serious affiliate.

It costs nothing to become an affiliate and they offer over 11,000 products. Many a real-life fortune has been made promoting ClickBank products.

And of course, Terry Dean (the undisputed master of practical advice) at www.netbreakthroughs.com.

If you are committed to quality, and only offer your people quality resources, time will become your ally and your affiliate commissions alone can quite literally pay for the lifestyle of your dreams.

The best way to start is to choose three programs that meet your criteria, and let them teach you how to be successful with their program.
