BELURAN : The mini Delegate Assembly (PDA) resumed this year at Our Lady of Fatima (OLOF) Beluran as the host which was held on the 28th January 2012. A total of 58 participants attended the mini PDA, representing members from the Majlis Paroki Umat Katolik (MPUK) and the various ministries, communities and groupings around Beluran.

The Chairman of MPUK, Albert Thomas Enti in his welcoming address thanked the Mini PDA Task Force Team from St. Mary's Cathedral, led by the PPC Chairman Patrick Seah along with Pilis Malim, the main coordinator and Matheus Sedomon, for their support, time and assistance in making the mini assembly possible in the sub-parish. He was pleased to see the overwhelming response from the parishioners, indicating their eagerness to contribute towards the formulation of the vision and mission statement of the Sandakan Diocese.

The session started at 9.00am with the participants being divided into 8 groups of 7 - 8 people each and the brain storming session generated lots of ideas, suggestions and constructive criticism especially from the youth on the subject of the reality of the current scenario of their local church. The presentations of their collective ideas in the group which consisted the young and the seniors were indeed enriching and inspiring. The feedback collected from them will be evaluated and documented to be presented in the upcoming general parish assembly. The findings in every parish then become the basis of establishing the formulation of the Vision and Mission Statement for the Diocese of Sandakan.

Seminar Kepimpinan KKD St Dominic Lahad Datu

Lahad Datu - Setelah empat tahun KKD di paroki St Dominic dibentuk, sejak tahun 2008, seminar kepimpinan KKD sekali lagi diadakan selama dua hari iaitu pada 14-15 Januari 2012 bertempat di Dewan Gereja St Dominic. Seminar kali ini disertai oleh lebih 140 orang pemimpin KKD di paroki St Dominic dan stasiluar.

Penceramah jemputan untuk seminar ini adalah saudara John Lainsin dari Diosis Keningau. Seminar ini dimulakan dengan doa pembukaan yang dipimpin oleh Rev Fr Simon Kontou disusuli dengan slot "Ice Breaker" melalui 'nyanyian dan aksi'.

Seminar ini dibahagi kepada tiga sesi iaitu :-

1) Kepimpinan Dalam Gereja

Saudara John Lainsin menerangkan bahawa dalam KKD, setiap ahli haruslah komited untuk datang, duduk dan dengar. Sifat berpartisipasi (take part) dan ambil peduli terhadap keadaan ahli sekitar kawasan KKD adalah penting dalam perkembangan KKD tersebut.

Seperti dalam Mrk 9:33-37, sebagai peminpin haruslah melayani dan berhati-hati dalam pelayanan kerana akan ada percubaan dan cabaran dalam proses tersebut. Saudara John turut menerangkan perbezaan antara pelayanan dan kerja. Beliau turut mengingatkan para pemimpin KKD bahawa dalam pelayanan, jangan ada yang terlalu mementingkan kejayaan tetapi kesetian dalam melakukan pelayanan itu yang harus diutamakan.

2) Komunikasi yang Efektif

Dalam sesi ini, saudara John menerangkan akan kebaikan dan keburukan komunikasi dalam 3 peringkat umur iaitu golongan berusia, dewasa dan kanak-kanak. Setiap ahli KKD haruslah mengamalkan sikap "win-win" dalam perbincangan agar setiap perbincangan dapat mencapai persetujuan daripada semua ahli. "Tujuan KKD adalah seperti cara hidup jemaat yang pertama terdapat dalam Kis 2:41-47" kata saudara John.

3) Pertumbuhan Komuniti Yang Berakar dan Beriman

KKD adalah rumah untuk semua. (Kis 4:32-37). Hidup sebagai KKD seharusnya sentiasa saling berkongsi, membaca kitab suci bersama dan saling tolong menolong. Mat18:19-22, Yesus harus lah menjadi sumber pertemuan dan aktiviti KKD agar membuahkan hasil.

Bengkel diadakan setiap sesi dan para peserta dibahagikan kepada beberapa kumpulan untuk perbincangan dan perkongsian.

Seminar ini diakhiri dengan ucapan daripada wakil MPP saudara Willie Binati dan Rev Fr Simon Kontou, penyampaian hadiah cenderakenangan kepada Saudara John Lainsin atas kesudian beliau memberi ceramah tentang KKD untuk kali kedua di paroki ini.

FEAST OF ST. NINO DE CEBU HOLY TRINITY PARISH TAWAU

Tawau : The Filipino Pastoral Community ( FPC ) of Holy Trinity Parish celebrated for the fourteenth time in running, the Feast of St. Nino De Cebu on Sunday, 15th January 2012 themed “The Light of Our Life”. The objective of this celebration is to honor the history of Christianity in the Philippines and to be part of the history.

The Sto Nino de Cebu known as the Holy Child of Cebu is highly similar to the Infant Jesus of Prague, is a celebrated Catholic statue of the Child Jesus venerated by Filipino Catholics. It is believed to be the oldest religious image in the Philippines, made in Belgium and brought into the country in 1521.

The statue gained prominence when it miraculously survived a great parish fire in 1565. The statue is permanently housed under bulletproof glass at the Basilica Minore del Santo Nino in Cebu City.The feast is celebrated every third Sunday of January.

Having celebrated this event since 1998 here in Holy Trinity, the Fiesta of St. Nino De Cebu becomes one of the most meaningful celebrations for the Filipino Community. Some 700 Filipino faithful coming from across the four parishes, Sandakan, Telupid, Lahad Datu and the host parish of Tawau as well as representatives from the Philippine Embassy attended the Thanksgiving Mass, presided by Fr David Garaman con celebrated by Msgr Nicholas Ong.

In his homily, Fr David said that God is calling us in different and special ways. Jesus called us, just as he had called Samuel. Just like Samuel we failed many a time to recognize His call. It took Samuel sometime to discern on God's call and be ready to listen to Him. We are reminded to reflect our encounter with Jesus, to remain in Him for the rest of our life. We are to live and to learn more about Jesus, to get closer and to share Jesus to others through His spirit in us so that we can be the light to others and lead them to find Jesus in their life.

Fr. David concluded his homily by saying in Visaya, 'pray to St. Nino for His protection from all calamities at present or in the future and may we be always protected by Him.'

After the Eucharistic celebration, the statue of St. Nino, dressed in the most expensive robes and a gold crown was carried in procession along the way from the front of the church to the Parish Hall accompanied with the Sinulog dance. Parishioners were served lunch and entertained to a host of presentations.

PESTA HARI NATAL PROGRAM PEMBELAJARAN KANAK-KANAK GEMBALA BAIK

Sandakan : Para staff dari Pusat Kebajikan Good Shepherd (PKGS) yang diketuai oleh Sr. Maria Dipal RGS, bersama dengan Jellferlyne Joseph dan Stephanie Sabin serta pembimbing sukarela telah menganjurkan perayaan pesta Hari Natal Program Pembelajaran Kanak-kanak Gembala Baik di Gereja Katolik St. Mark Batu 12 pada Ahad, 18hb Disember 2011. Sambutan pesta Hari Natal tersebut telah dianjurkan khasnya untuk kanak-kanak dan para ibu bapa yang telah mengikuti program ini. Beberapa basis (KKD) dari Komuniti Keluarga Besar Katolik Indonesia (KBKI) juga telah dijemput untuk sama-sama memeriahkan pesta tersebut. Kelancaran dan kejayaan sambutan pesta Hari Natal ini adalah hasil bantuan dan kerjasama daripada pihak Kerasulan Wanita Gereja St. Mark serta komuniti KBKI - sikap dan keterbukaan mereka haruslah diberikan pujian.

Antara jemputan yang hadir pada hari tersebut ialah En. Francis Tan dan keluarga, serta En. Dimeh Kyopo dan ahli Komiti Pastoral Gereja St. Mark yang lain. Kehadiran mereka juga telah menambahkan lagi kemeriahan sambutan pesta Hari Natal itu terutama sekali apabila En. Dimeh memberikan ucapan di mana beliau juga berasa sangat gembira dan bersyukur kerana beliau dapat berkumpul bersama-sama dengan komuniti Indonesia di Gereja St. Mark. Menurut beliau “…walaupun kita berasal dari tempat yang berlainan tetapi kita tetap adalah satu keluarga Kristian dan kita berkumpul serta bersatu di dalam nama Yesus Kristus walau di mana pun kita berada .” Beliau juga memberikan galakan dan sokongan kepada mereka untuk meneruskan usaha mereka bagi mendekati dan terlibat di dalam aktiviti atau pelayanan gereja.

Perkembangan KBKI dengan tertubuhnya beberapa Basis (KKD)
Proses rekonsiliasi antara sesama ahli komuniti KBKI.
Sokongan dan kerjasama dari pihak gereja menyediakan ruang untuk menjalankan program ini.

Beliau juga telah menyatakan harapan beliau terhadap komuniti KBKI untuk tahun 2012 dan antaranya ialah

Meneguhkan iman dan membangun hidup berkomuniti

Tajuk: “Malam Natal Yang Penuh Makna”

Dengan tema “Gloria In-excelsis Deo” pesta Hari Natal ini diadakan bukan sahaja untuk memberikan kesempatan dan masa bagi mengumpulkan seisi keluarga komuniti Indonesia tetapi juga untuk meneguhkan lagi pengertian tentang erti sebenar Hari Natal. Seperti yang telah dilakonkan oleh beberapa kanak-kanak dari program ini dengan tajuk “Malam Natal yang penuh makna” di mana mesej yang disampaikan cukup jelas bahawa Hari Natal disambut setiap tahun adalah untuk senantiasa memperingati kita bahawa kelahiran Yesus Kristus ke dunia merupakan hadiah yang paling bermakna dan berharga yang telah dihadiahkan oleh Allah Bapa atas cinta kasih-Nya yang sangat besar untuk manusia. Oleh itu, sebagai umat Kristian kita haruslah menghargai dan merayakan Hari Natal dengan penuh riang gembira dan rasa syukur serta cinta kasih pada setiap tahun kerana Allah Bapa syurgawi telah memberikan kita Putera-Nya yang tunggal iaitu Yesus Kristus pada Hari Natal.

Selain itu, pelbagai persembahan dan permainan telah diadakan bagi memeriahkan suasana dan seterusnya mewujudkan atau membina dan memperkukuhkan hubungan persaudaraan yang merupakan salah satu panggilan untuk kita sebagai keluarga Kristian. Antaranya ialah persembahan tarian dari kanak-kanak program ini, Basis Bt. 8 dan Basis Bt. 16, serta persembahan nyanyian dari ibu-ibu Gereja Basel dan St. Mark.

Sr. Maria Dipal RGS juga telah mengambil kesempatan pada hari tersebut untuk menyampaikan penghargaan dan tanda terima kasih beliau serta ahli PKGS yang lain kepada para ibu bapa yang telah menyumbangkan tenaga, masa, dan usaha secara sukarela untuk menjalankan Program Pembelajaran Kanak-kanak ini.

Akhir sekali, seperti kata Sr. Maria di dalam ucapan beliau”…bintang terang itu sebenarnya ada di dalam diri kita masing-masing dan ia hadir melalui pengalaman-pengalaman pahit dan manis, suka dan duka yang telah ditempuhi sepanjang tahun kerana pengalaman-pengalaman inilah yang membantu kita untuk terus berkembang dan membangun di dalam komuniti dan gereja”.

YESUS DIPERKENALKAN KEPADA SEGALA BANGSA

Hari Minggu sesudah oktaf Krismas adalah Hari Raya Epifani yang bermaksud 'Penampakan Tuhan' kepada semua bangsa yang diwakili oleh tiga raja yang berpandukan kepada bintang yang berakhir dengan penemuan Kristus di palungan. "Allah pencipta akan menuntun setiap manusia yang mencari kebenaran dan akan terjadi perubahan jalan hidup mereka apabila mereka menemui Kristus, kerana Dia adalah jalan dan kebenaran dan kehidupan itu sendiri". " Melihat Aku kata Yesus akan melihat Bapa" demikianlah sedutan dari homili Fr. Thomas Makajil selaku selebran Misa Kudus di Gereja Our Lady of Fatima Beluran. Sandakan.

Hadiah emas, kemayan dan mur adalah merupakan hadiah yang melambangkan pernilaian yang tertinggi oleh Tiga raja terhadap bayi Yesus. Menemui Kristus telah mengubah jalan hidup mereka, di mana akhirnya mereka memilih jalan yang baru. Kerana kembali ke jalan lama sudah pasti akan menemui Raja Herodes yang sedang menanti dengan niat jahatnya.

"Tiga raja itu telah mendahului dunia hari ini, terutamanya kaum belia yang sangat haus dengan ramalan-ramalan horoskop bagi jalan hidup mereka." Kata Fr. Thomas. "Kini tiga raja astrologi yang bijaksana itu pula sudah bersujud kepada bayi Juruselamat sebagai bintang terang yang baru bagi keselamatan mereka.

Alkitab mencatat dua kali terjadi pembunuhan massal terhadap anak-anak usia dua tahun ke bawah yang pertama di Mesir pada waktu kelahiran Musa dan kedua pada waktu kelahiran Yesus. Kedua peristiwa ini adalah bermotifkan politik kerana ketakutan muncul pemimpin yang bersaing dengan pemerintah ketika itu.

Betapa ramai manusia mengalami kesulitan untuk mencari Tuhan. Tugas kitalah mengantar Allah kepada mereka yang sedang mencariNya

First Sacerdotal Anniversary of Fr David and Farewell to Sr Marysia

Tawau – Some 300 parishioners of Holy Trinity Parish, Tawau celebrated the first Sacerdotal Anniversary of Fr. David Aloysius Garaman, the assistant rector on Friday, 30th December 2011 at the Parish Hall.

Fr David's ordination on 31^st December 2010, at St. Dominic's Church, Lahad Datu is the first priestly ordination in the Diocese. During his address on that event, he said, 'The priestly vocation is a call by the Almighty. It’s a gift from God that I should share with others. As a priest, life ahead is full of challenges. I believe that through your prayers I will sustain and will be a good priest. Your prayers are my strength and your support, my encouragement to live a life of holiness and of continual service to others.'

He went on to say, 'Working together with the parishioners through the various ministries in Holy Trinity, allowed me to grow in faith and sharpened my skill in connecting to people. Continue to pray for me that I will be a model to others specifically in my spiritual life.'
He also urged the parishioners to journey and to be faithful to God’s call till the end.

Msgr. Nicholas Ong, the rector expressed his gratitude and joy to have Fr. David serving in the parish. He said, 'It's a blessing to have a young priest around for he is full of energy and enthusiasm. He can conveniently serve the outstations and take good care of the youth.'
He added, 'We make up a good team, an excellent combination of the old and the young.'

Apart from the Sacerdotal Anniversary of Fr David, was also the farewell for Sr. M. Marysia Malating who had served Holy Trinity for some two years. She will be going on transfer to St. Dominic's Parish Lahad Datu early February .

The event was filled with renditions of Christmas Carols by the various BECs, the anniversary cake cutting ceremony and presentation of gifts to Fr David and Sr Marysia.

斗湖圣三天主堂于12月11日至17日到教友家家户户报佳音。今年堂区一共组织了12个团体的报佳音。这包括来自基信团，祈祷会，菲律宾，印尼，青年团，国语歌咏团以及两团来自主日学和青年团的华文团体。在这报佳音期间，我们转达天主降生成人的好消息。把喜乐以及平安带到每个家庭当中。让世人感受到天主无限的爱。

除此之外，华文报佳音也都被邀请到凯显酒店颂唱诗歌。完毕后，大会也为我们准备丰富的晚餐。

MALAM CAHAYA LILIN LAHAD DATU

Malam Cahaya Lilin merupakan peristiwa yang dinanti-nantikan oleh Komuniti Katolik di Paroki St Dominic Lahad Datu Sabah. Umat Katolik telah tiba seawal jam 4 petang pada 18 Disember. Program ini merupakan aktiviti kemuncak di mana kesemua ahli kumpulan karolers dan umat berhimpun di kawasan dataran Gereja, menantikan cahaya terang simbol kedatangan Kristus. Sebelum ini, para karolers telah melawat beberapa keluarga setiap malam sejak Misa Kudus Perutusan 4 Disember untuk memberitakan Khabar Sukacita kedatangan Juruselamat ke dunia.

Umat Katolik hadir untuk menyaksikan persembahan ' Malam Cahaya Lilin'

Upacara membahagikan cahaya lilin yang dimulakan dengan doa pendengaran Bacaan Sabda Tuhan dari Kitab Perjanjian Lama dan seterusnya bacaan penggenapan INJIL serta homili singkat oleh paderi.

Suasana 'Malam Cahaya Lilin' yang melambangkan Kristus adalah cahaya dunia yang harus dikongsikan kepada dunia.

Malam Cahaya Lilin dengan persembahan dan pertandingan lagu-lagu dan drama Natal dengan gaya serta kreativiti tersendiri, telah mampu mewujudkan semangat Krismas. Kumpulan yang terbaik telah dimenangi oleh Komuniti Kristian Dasar, Silam.

Sebelum berakhirnya ‘Carol By Candlelight’ ini, Rev Fr Simon Kontou mengucapkan doa penutup dan memberkati umat yang hadir. Lampu di sekitar dataran gereja dimatikan dan nyalaan lilin disebarkan dari Rev Fr Simon kepada umat sekeliling diiringi dengan lagu “Silent Night” dan “Joy to The World”.

MISA KUDUS PENGUTUSAN KAROLERS PAROKI LAHAD DATU

Rev. Fr. Marcellinus Pongking Pembantu Paderi Paroki St. Dominic Lahad Datu menyampaikan amanat penting kepada Karolers

Adven adalah 'masa penantian' ketibaan Juruselamat ke dunia menurut kalender Liturgi bagi Gereja Katolik di seluruh dunia. Setiap tahun bila tiba musim adven para karolers akan berkumpul dalam Perayaan Misa Kudus Pengutusan oleh Gereja pergi melawat ke seluruh keluarga dengan mewartakan kedatangan Kristus dalam bentuk bacaan Firman Tuhan, Nyanyian dan doa. Dalam masa empat minggu Adven umat Katolik diseru untuk mengadakan persiapan pribadi menyambut ketibaan Juruselamat yang dinubuatkan oleh para nabi Israel dalam Kitab Perjanjian Lama.

Bagi umat Katolik paroki Lahad Datu, karolers telah diutus dalam minggu kedua adven iaitu pada 4 Disember oleh Rev Fr Marcellinus Pongking. Para karolers adalah pembawa mesej Malaikat Gabriel yang menyampaikan khabar kepada Perawan Maria, Seruan oleh Yohanes Pembaptis, Perjalanan Tiga Raja dari Timur menyembah bayi Yesus dan mengulangi bacaan-bacaan dari kitab nubuat yang meramalkan tentang kelahiran Kristus yang disampaikan oleh para nabi. Lawatan Karolers memberi kesegaran semula kepada umat Katolik.

Budaya Suci ini telah menjadi Tradisi kepada umat Katolik sejak Gereja awal lagi, ia adalah merupakan Liturgi Tahunan umat Katolik seluruh dunia. Para Karolers dianggotai oleh Komuniti Kristian yang terdiri kanak-kanak, remaja dan orang dewasa tanpa mengira peringkat umur.

Bringing Joy and Cheer to Neighbours During the Christmas Season

Sandakan : Some 30 young members of Taman Indah Jaya BEC carolers led by a few senior members started the house to house caroling from 11th to 21st December 2011 except for 14th December where the Catholic Church was assigned as the anchor church for the Member of Parliament Christmas Celebration held at the Sandakan Municipal Council Square.

On average, the carolers were able to visit 10 - 12 houses per night and throughout the caroling period they managed to visit more than 100 families in Taman Indah Jaya housing area, bringing the Good News to neighbours as we approach for the coming of our Saviour.

The carolers spend about a month practicing the carols and in the process were able to establish a strong relationship with one another. Claire Andrew, the youth leader as well as the coordinator for this year's caroling was particularly please to note the high spirit and deep commitment of the carolers, not only being consistent in attendance during practice but throughout the caroling period, reaching out to Catholic families and friends within the neighbourhood.

The members donned in white and black with red scarf brought much cheer and joy to the families as they would normally begin with an Opening Prayer and the Proclamation of the Word followed by the singing of Christmas carols. Such visits made families within the neighbourhood connected and supported, the goodness of the season.

The Christmas carols bring the meaning of Christmas out in a special way as families members joined in the singing. After carols were sung, many families offered food and drinks to the carolers. Their generosity in sharing reflects a deeper meaning of the festive season, a call to care and share with one another.

Christmas is a time of peace and joy at the good news brought to us by the angels: the Saviour of the world is born. We should not be ashamed to announce this, as our Pope Benedict XVI told the 20 bishops of New York gathered in Vatican’s Apostolic Palace on Nov 26, 2011 (published in Herald on the Dec 4, 2011 issue, page 9.) Sharing with all peoples the infinite saving love of God in Jesus Christ which brings peace and joy is indeed very good news.

This is the spirit of Christmas. Here, in Malaysia, the excellent tradition of “Open house” should be used by us to share our love of God that brings joy and peace to all who are open to receive Him.

Besides, the Bible constantly reminds us to be open and hospitable to all who come our way, especially to strangers and the less fortunate. Is there anything objectionable in giving to anyone the love of God? If there is someone who objects to receiving God’s love, he or she must be insane.

However, in the midst of our peace and joy, our Pope also said, “Despite attempts to still the Church’s voice in the public square… in spite of false accusations by certain quarters and in the face of a spate of allegations without proof, for example, the accusation to make Malaysia Christian and the Damansara Utama Methodist Centre’s charity party to convert Muslims, etc, we should not be cowed to stop proclaiming Jesus Christ as God’s love made manifest to us humans.

Besides, it is a command directly from Jesus Christ himself before he ascended into Heaven: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 28:19)

Freedom and truth are interlinked. However, freedom without regard to the truth is gross irresponsibility and cannot be considered as true freedom. The Truth of Jesus Christ gives us the freedom to, in the words of Pope Benedict XVI, “speak out, humbly yet insistently, in defence of moral truth” – of justice, of equality before God, of human dignity, etc. In short and in other words, we have to stand up for human rights.

May this Christmas strengthen our faith in Jesus Christ, the Truth, who sets us to be truly free so that in joy we cannot only proclaim Him but also what He has taught us! Every person in his or her dignity as a human being has a right to propose what he or she believes in but has no right to impose it on others. We should tell everyone of the infinite, impartial love of God brought to us by Jesus Christ that brings real peace and joy: in brief, our Christmas joy.

Sandakan : St Mary's Cathedral is all set for Christmas celebration with Vigil Mass tonight 24th December 2011 in English at 9.00 pm. The right wing, just extended with a semi-arch open shed complete with lighting, audio and video system can accommodate more than 300 people. With the shed in place, the Cathedral now has a seating capacity of some 1,500 people.

A 25- foot neon light Christmas tree is placed close at the Cathedral entrance and when lit it glows the brightest The glittering setting of the entire Cathedral ushers in the festive spirit of Christmas.

The garden surrounding the statue of St Francis of Assisi is also creatively decorated.

The neon lights are hung all along the road leading to the Cathedral. It's simply marvelous to see the whole Cathedral area flooded with a sea of colourful and brightly lit lights.

All is bright with the coming of Christmas, bringing along with it much joy and cheer for the occasion.

Members of the Cathedral BEC were all out to decorate the inside of the Cathedral to ensure that it befits the festive occasion.

Giving a final touch to the Christmas tree inside the Cathedral, checking and adjusting the ornaments with utmost care and patience. After four weeks of waiting in the season of Advent, preparing for His coming, the hour has finally come. Wishing all visitors to our site, a 'Blessed and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year'.

Bishop of the Diocese of Sandakan.

‘Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.’ This Bible text about peace taken from John 14: 27 is the fundamental inheritance given us by Jesus. It is this ‘peace’ that holds all mankind together, faithful and all others alike.

As we approach the celebration of the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, let each and every one of us express our hope of peace. The Kingdom of God is indeed the Kingdom of peace. May we use every opportunity granted us to share the Lord’s love and blessings in promoting peace within the family, the community and the society at large.

In the earlier part of the year, the impounding of some 35,000 sacred Alkitab and the controversy over the importation and distribution of the Malay Bibles which contained the word ‘Allah’ had caused some ‘uneasiness’ among the faithful. The raid by JAIS enforcers on a church in Damansara Utama over the baseless allegations of proselytizing some Muslims was upsetting. Such pressing issues actually hinder national integration and unity. It is contrary to the much preached concept of 1 Malaysia.

As peace loving people and bearers of hope, we continuously pray that those in authority practice genuine justice and love in resolving such issues. ‘The Lord loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of His unfailing love.’ Psalm 33 : 5, and if we nurture and build on it, the people will co-exist harmoniously and peacefully in this fertile land, our nation, Malaysia.

All is not lost for in every cloud there is a silver lining. Malaysia has established formal relations with the Vatican paving the way for cultural and inter-religious dialogues for the promotion of peace and justice. It is these peace and justice that will contribute to the promotion of mutual respect, understanding and bridging differences, a pertinent element in nation building.

In this festive season of Christmas, our focus should not only be on the exterior colorful neon light decorations but more so, on the light of Christ. We really need to put Christ in the centre of our celebration and conscious of the many blessings granted us in abundance. The blessings we share with family members and loved ones should instill in us the desire to reach out and touch the hearts of those in need within our neighborhood, community and across the globe.

We ought to use every opportunity during this season to share the Lord’s love and blessings with those who are in need. ‘Whatever you did unto one of the least brethren of mine, you did it to me’ Matt : 25 : 35, we are called to serve with a humble and loving heart to the poor, marginalized and the oppressed. Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta adopted ‘You Did It to Me’ as the Gospel of the five fingers as her fundamental values and action in reaching out to the poorest of the poor. Another best known saying of Mother Teresa is ‘The fruit of love is service and the fruit of service is peace’, thus we will be able reap the true joy of service and creating peace if we commit to reach out to the poor.

May the blessings of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ be upon all of us this Christmas and through the coming New Year.

The Fourth Advent - Mary, the Ark of God's Covenant

Sandakan : The Sunset Eucharistic celebration, Saturday 17th December 2011, the fourth Sunday of Advent at St Mary's Cathedral was presided over by Fr Erik Jerome, a lecturer based in St Peter's College, Major Seminary for East Malaysia, Kuching, Sarawak. He is currently on vacation.

We are now in the fourth and last week in our four-week period of preparing for the celebration of the coming of Christ. The Fourth Sunday of Advent emphasize the nearness of the joyous celebration of the Nativity of Jesus Christ. The fourth and final candle in purple in the Advent wreath is lit symbolizing penance, repentance and above all love. We are all urged to prepare space in our hearts to receive Jesus for we know He is indeed coming.

The Gospel reading taken from Luke 1 : 26-38 tells us that this promise has been fulfilled in the person of Jesus Christ who was to be born of Mary of Nazareth – the unmarried maiden specially chosen by God to be the mother of the Messiah.

In his homily Fr Eric urged parishioners to emulate Mary whose deep faith in God, made her say “yes” to God’s invitation and accepted everything as the will of the Lord as in the Gospel acclamation 'I am the handmaid of the Lord, let what you have said be done to me.'

He went on to say that it is through Mary’s total submission of herself to God that the plan of salvation would be carried out. It is faith and trust in God that she was willing and eager to do God's will even though it was difficult, near impossible and costly.We are blessed to have Mary as the mother of our Savior! She has shown us how it is to be a true and genuine believer for her wish was everything be for the glory of God and that the Son she bore may be a gift of grace to all.

He summed up his homily by calling upon the parishioners to be ready to sacrifice , courageous and be not afraid, like Mother Mary in doing God's will.

PARISH MINI DELEGATE ASSEMBLY

Sandakan : Sunday 18th December, the Parish Delegate Assembly (PDA) Task Force of St Mary's Cathedral organized the year end mini assembly for the on going process of formulating the Diocesan vision and mission statement. The one day mini-assembly was attended by 35 people representing the Catholic Women's Apostolate, Secular Franciscan Order, Catholic Nurses' Guild and the Catholic Teachers Guild.

The day's event started with the enthronement of the Bible followed by the proclamation of the Word taken from the Gospel according to Luke 1 : 26-38, themed 'Mary, the Ark of God's Covenant.' Siony Fiel, the chief facilitator for the assembly, informed that the session would be the last for the year 2011 and will resume early next year. The mini assembly saw an all women participants which started from 8.30am at the parish hall. The session was made lively by the presence of Ferdee Mariano (CWA) as the emcee.

The participants were divided into five groups of seven people each and the discussion generated lots of views based on their observation especially on the subject on the reality of the current scenario of the local church. When it came to the topic on the ideal or future image of the local church, the participants who came from the various groups with different backgrounds brought up creative ideas and suggestions based on their experiences and from overseas visits.

Each group's findings, ideas and proposals were presented to the floor on flip charts. The presentations were beneficial and enriching. The feedback collected will be evaluated, documented and shall form the basis / core business for the parish assembly in the formulation of the Vision and Mission Statement for the Diocese of Sandakan, scheduled sometime in June next year .

The PPC Chairman, Patrick Seah was on hand to assist in ensuring that the mini assembly achieved its purpose. The session ended with a song 'Give Thanks' followed by hi-tea at the Parish Canteen.

A recollection on the week before given by Mario Domingo as the Chairman of the Home Caroling 2011 was aimed to prepare all the Caroling Groups ( Central Group and BEC Groups) spiritually. The input sessions included the meaning and message of Advent / Christmas and also the purpose of doing caroling from house to house.

CHILDREN'S CHRISTMAS PARTY AT HTC TAWAU

Tawau : Some 400 children and their parents gathered at the Parish Hall on Sunday morning 11th December, after the Bahasa Malaysia Mass, for the annual Children's Christmas party organized by the Catholic Women's Apostolate (CWA) of Holy Trinity Church.

Since its inception some 40 years ago, CWA as a caring group, has been tasked to bring and share Christmas joy to the children who may not have the opportunity to celebrate such event at home. Such joy will be dearly treasured by the little children for a long time to come.

Apart from organizing the Christmas Party at the main Church, CWA members made every effort to distribute Christmas goodies to the children in the outstations who were not able to make it to the event.

The event was opened to children of 12 years and below. They have enlisted the Parish Youth Apostolate and some parents to assist in organizing the event.

Santa Claus, the main attraction of the day, brought much delight to the children when he went round the hall to distribute goodies to the children. It was indeed heartening to see smiles in the children when they received gifts from Santa Claus.

Msgr. Nicholas Ong, the rector of HTC was present to lend support to the children , their parents and the organizers. He had a great time interacting with the children.

The Parish Youth Apostolate led by Felsa May together with her members helped to organize some interesting games for the children. The children had such great time and fun, enjoying every moment of the event and above all they interacted well with one another.

3rd WEEK OF ADVENT AND CAROLING BY CANDLE LIGHT AT HOLY TRINITY PARISH TAWAU 10.12.2011.

Tawau : Saturday, 10th December 2011, Holy Trinity Church celebrated the Third Sunday of Advent also known as 'Rejoice Sunday / Pink Candle Sunday' reminding us of the joy that is to come as we await for the the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. The celebration was presided over by Fr David Garaman, the assistant rector of HTC.

As we prepare ourselves for the second coming of our savior, again we are reminded to reflect on the Gospel message about St. John the Baptist, a great man with humility acknowledging his nothingness compare to the One who is to come and live among us.

Fr. David explained about the changing of the liturgical color from purple to pink symbolizing an encouragement for us to continue our hope by living in faith and to follow Christ faithfully. We are also being reminded to discern deeply the real vocation of our life.

He urged us to prepare ourselves by living according to the message from the Gospel 'Make Way to the Lord' by reflecting on our lives as Christian and the purpose of our being here.

He highlighted that we must always make Christ increase in us so that we may grow in order to help others to receive and acknowledge hope and faith while waiting for the coming of our King.

During the Mass all carolers were commissioned for the home caroling program which commenced the following day, 11th December. Carolers were reminded to focus on the real meaning of Christmas and caroling. Proclaiming the good news to others is a wonderful and blessed task especially when it comes from our hearts.

After the Mass some 800 parishioners proceeded to the Parish Hall for the 'Caroling by Candle Light' event.

The event began with an Opening Prayer led by Msgr. Nicholas Ong, the rector of HTC after which he graced the lighting ceremony. He called on all carolers that they may bring and proclaim the good news faithfully and joyfully to all parishioners so that they too will reflect and prepare themselves for the coming of our Lord.

Five readings were proclaimed to bring home the message of salvation followed by captivating presentations by the various carolers' groups. The grand finale of the event was the singing of 'Silent Night' with candles lighted up and held high - it was indeed a holy night, calm and bright.

Sandakan : The 3-day annual Member of Parliament for Sandakan Christmas Celebration 14th - 16th De cember 2011, was officially launched last night, 14th December 2011 by Datuk Ir James Wong, the President of the Sandakan Municipal Council at the MPS Square.

The theme 'Jesus, the Star of Great Joy' remains the same following last year and according to the MC for the night, Leonnie Degallucion of the Catholic Cathedral, is most appropriate as in Hebrew 13 : 8, 'Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today and forever.' He is unchangeable.

The square was brightly, beautifully and colorfully lit. The backdrop and its decoration together with the 25 foot high neon light Christmas tree created a warm setting, befitting a grand Christmas celebration. The Catholic Cathedral was assigned the task as the anchor Church for the night's carol presentations. The event started with an Opening Prayer led by Fr Thomas Makajil, the rector of St Mary's Cathedral.

The 3-day event is the joint effort of the MP's Office and the Municipal Council in cooperation with the 14 member churches of the Sandakan Inter Church, with Charles Pang as the organizing chairman.

Rt Rev Julius Dusin Gitom, the Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Sandakan in his opening address, highlighted the Bible text about peace taken from John 14 : 27 as the fundamental inheritance that holds all mankind together. He called upon each and every believer to share the Lord's love and blessings in promoting peace within every strata of society.

He urged all Christians to continuously pray that those in authority practice genuine justice and love in resolving sensitive and thorny issues for the Lord loves righteousness and justice. Nurturing such values will pave the way for all to co-exist harmoniously and peacefully in our beloved country, Malaysia.

He urged all Christians to use every opportunity during the festive season to reach out to those in need, the poor, the oppressed and the marginalized with a humble and loving heart. He quoted from Matthew 25 : 35, ' Whatever you did unto one of the least brethren of mine, you did it to me.'

Datuk Ir James Wong in his launching speech extended his appreciation to YB Datuk VK Liew the MP for Sandakan for his initiation to host the annual Christmas celebration. He thanked all member churches of the Sandakan Inter Church for their cooperation and commitment.

He said, 'Such an event bears testimony that there is unity in diversity. It is also a testimony that tolerance among the various races and religious beliefs not only exists but flourishes here in Malaysia.'

He went on to say that in many parts of the world, there exist conflicts and wars.The people in Malaysia are much blessed because we can come together to celebrate each other's celebrations, creating much space for interaction among one another. This is our strength for we can live harmoniously and peacefully in a multi -racial and multi-religious country. He called on the people to maintain that 'peace' not only during Christmas but at all time and at all cost.

The Bahasa Malaysia Choir of St Mary's Cathedral led by Saundry Ekok presented a medley of four carols, 'Malam Kudus', God rest you merry Gentlemen, 'Mozou hozou Oh Malaikat' and 'Do you know what I hear.'

Christine Wong of the Chinese choir of St Mary's Cathedral led her members in presenting a medley of three carols.

'What is Christmas all about?' is a sketch and liturgical dance performed by the youth and teenagers of St Mary's Cathedral. It is a call to conversion especially those who are lost in the world to return to Christ.

A sketch put up by the young members of Calvary Charismatic Centre, 'Syaitan, engkau telah ditangkap.'

The sketch depicts on how young people are enslaved in worldly things. Unless they repent and listen to the Word of God in faith, they will forever remain imprisoned.

The senior citizens of the Calvary Charismatic Centre presented a praise dance to the tune of 'Gospel is the power of God.'

'Worthy is the Lamb' the little children from the Baptist Church performed a praise and worship dance.

Another action song by the little children from the Baptist Church.

The youth from the Calvary Charismatic Centre presented three songs, 'Joy to the World' - bringing joy, peace, hope and light to all people. It is a song saying somebody cares.

Their next presentation 'Mari Puji Dia' - praising, thanking and worshiping God by drawing closer to Him.

Closing the event is a Timorese song entitled 'Tuhan Kasihanilah' sang by the Indonesian Catholic community from St Mark's Catholic Church.

The event drew a crowd of more than 1,500 people from all member churches and the public. Also in attendance were Charles Pang, the Organizing Chairman, Datuk John Lim, Chairman of the Sandakan Tourism Board, pastors and representatives from SIC member churches.

Tawau : Minggu Advent bermula dengan satu semangat untuk mempersiapkan diri akan kedatangan Yesus Kristus Tuhan Raja dan Penyelamat Dunia. Sempena minggu ini, beberapa Ahli Majlis Pastoral Paroki ( MPP ) melakukan lawatan kerohanian ke beberapa tempat luar paroki ( stasi luar ) antara lain tujuan adalah untuk;

meluangkan masa bersama para umat yang jarang mendapat peluang untuk datang berkumpul bersama pada misa minggu di pusat paroki Holy Trinity.
memantau keadaan sebenar suasana dan persekitaran hidup umat yang tidak berkesempatan bertemu dan berinteraksi dengan umat lain di paroki
menilai keperluan akan pembangunan rohani secara peribadi dan juga keperluan tempat untuk menjalankan ibadat sabda yang lebih sesuai
mengambil kesempatan bagi para umat mengenali para ahli MPP yang baru dilantik bagi sesi 2011- 2013
lebih memahami situasi keperluan para umat di peringkat akar umbi sempena proses penggubalan misi dan visi keuskupan

Setakat ini ahli MPP telah melakukan sebanyak enam lawatan ke stasi luar termasuk di kawasan pedalaman.

Tidak dinafikan masih terdapat banyak yang perlu di terangkan atau didedahkan kepada mereka akan liturgi perjalanan Ibadat Sabda namun dipercayai bahawa kesungguhan mereka menunjukkan bahawa iman itu telah tertanam didalam hati mereka.

Kesempatan ini turut diambil oleh Pengersui MPP, Mario Domingo untuk memberikan semangat dan dorongan dan terus mengimani Kristus disamping menjalankan kehidupan dengan penuh kesyukuran walaupun dalam kedaan yang sederhana.

Secara keseluruhan para umat yang dilawati meluahkan rasa terima kasih diatas kesudian para MPP untuk datang dan melihat situasi mereka. Lawatan ini memberikan semangat untuk terus melayani sesama walaupun berjauhan dengan paroki pusat.

Selain daripada para MPP, lawatan ini turut disertai oleh para sister Gembala Baik dengan projek mereka tersendiri iaitu pemberian buku untuk diwarnai sempena musim Adven.

Kerasulan Wanita Katolik turut memberikan hadiah berbentuk makanan kepada semua kanak-kanak di stasi luar.

Rombongan yang diketuai Pengerusi MPP Mario Domingo disertai Ricardo Dragon( Kordinator Pastoral Outreach ), Francis Kamuntah ( Kordinator bagi EMCs statsi luar ), Gabriel Nunang ( EMC dan juga Pengerusi baru Komuniti Pastoral Indonsia ), Petrus Bernadus, Sr. Barbara RGS, Sr. Lidwina RGS, Alisen Neri ( Pelayan Gembala Baik ) Aaron Darryl Domingo dan Julita Kantod dari CFLM juga SOCCOM Tawau.

Pembinaan Holy Family of Nazareth Luasong hampir siap dibina

Basis atau stasi luar yang dilawati meliputi Holy Family of Nazareth Luasong, Yesus Maria dan Yosep Bt. 5 Apas , St. Jude Bt. 5 Sin Onn, Bt 12 Andrasy, St. Fransis Bt 8 Apas, Brantian, dan St. Stephen Tass.

ST. PAUL ULU DUSUN SANDAKAN. Santo Yohanes Pembaptis adalah seorang sang 'promoter' kepada kehadiran Yesus Kristus. Nubuat di kitab Perjanjian Lama telah memperkenalkan Yohanes sebagai tanda dan saksi yang benar. Adven pertama Gereja mengajak bersiap sedia dengan talenta dan berjaga-jaga menyambut kedatangan Kristus serta disusuli dengan seruan bertobat pada minggu kedua, disamping mengenal suara-suara yang mempromosikan tentang kebenaran. Upacara Sakramen Pertobatan telah berjalan di seluruh Gereja Keuskupan Sandakan.

"Hari ini umat Katolik adalah Saksi yang benar kepada kedatangan Tuhan." kata Fr. Thomas Makajil selaku selebran Misa Kudus di Gereja Ulu Dusun. "Saksi yang benar adalah bukan bergantung kepada iklan dan hiasan material Krismas. Tetapi kehidupan yang sesuai dengan Firman Tuhan." jelasnya.

"Merayakan ketibaan Tuhan setiap masa perlu persiapan dengan hiasan hati yang bersih. Hidup kita adalah kesaksian hidup yang sebenarnya."jelasnya.

ADVEN 2: SERUAN BERTOBAT MENANTIKAN KEDATANGAN KRISTUS

SANDAKAN : Adven minggu kedua, Gereja mewartakan bacaan INJIL dari Mrk 1: 1-8 "Bertobatlah dan berilah dirimu dibaptis dan Allah akan mengampuni dosamu." Yohanes Pembaptis, tokoh yang dinubuatkan menjadi utusan yang berseru-seru mempersiapkan jalan bagi Tuhan.

Pembacaan Pertama: Kitab Yesaya 40: 1-5, 9-11. Pembacaan Kedua: 2 Petrus 3: 8-14

Pewartaan INJIL Mrk 1: 1-8

Rev. Fr. Philip Muji sedang menyampaikan homili.

Fr. Philip dalam homilinya berkata bahawa dunia hari ini begitu banyak suara di sekeliling kita yang berseru-seru dan perlu direnungkan. "Kita harus mengenalpasti nilai-nilai kebenaran tersebut. Hanya satu suara yang benar datang dari Firman Tuhan di Alkitab." katanya.

"Kita sentiasa bersiap sedia menanti kedatangan Tuhan dengan nilai-nilai yang baik. Penantian Krismas adalah masa untuk memperbaiki hubungan kita dengan Kristus.", nasihatnya.

"Kita jangan mudah terpengaruh kepada perhiasan dan promosi jualan sempena Krismas. Sesiapa saja boleh merayakan Krismas tanpa Kristus." jelasnya. "Umat harus berusaha mengundang Kristus lahir di hati dan siapkanlah diri dengan kehidupan doa dan kerohanian seperti kehendak kebenaran Firman Tuhan." tegasnya.

Demikianlah Fr. Philip Muji memberi pengertian ke atas ketiga pembacaan tersebut pada minggu itu. Penantian Krismas sudah dinubuatkan 2000 tahun sebelum kelahiran Kristus oleh Nabi Yesaya.
"Sebab itu Tuhan sendirilah yang akan memberikan kepadamu suatu pertanda: Sesungguhnya, seorang perempuan muda mengandung dan akan melahirkan seorang anak laki-laki, dan ia akan menamakan Dia Imanuel." Nubuat Kitab Nabi Yesaya 7: 14

Hal itu terjadi supaya genaplah yang difirmankan Tuhan oleh nabi: "Sesungguhnya, anak dara itu akan mengandung dan melahirkan seorang anak laki-laki, dan mereka akan menamakan Dia Imanuel" -- yang berarti: Allah menyertai kita. (Matius 1:22-23)

"Kita menyembah Tuhan yang tidak berubah" katanya. Maka masa tetap sama bagi Tuhan. Sama sekalilah Gereja berseru seperti Yohanes Pembaptis mengajak umat Tuhan untuk bertobat menanti kedatangan Kristus.
