How is your transportation effected during these tough economic times? With the unemployment rate at record highs and the threat of more layoffs and business closings to come, new cars sales are way down. Even if you are lucky enough to have a job now, are you willing to take on a 48 or 60 month car note? If you are able and willing to buy a new car, what are some of the things that you need to take into consideration before buying. With the fluctuating gas prices, you might need to consider the MPG (miles per gallon) of the vehicles. Maybe a hybrid vehicle, would suit your driving needs and conditions. But do your homework on hybrids, find out about the batteries and their cost and how often they need to be replaced. Also most hybrids run on their electric power at speeds up to 35 mph. So if you do a lot of stop and go driving in heavy slow moving traffic most of the time, then hybrids might be your answer. But if most of your driving is done at speeds above 35 mph, and are mostly highway miles, then the extra money that you spend to get the hybrid over a conventional gas powered vehicle might not achieve the high gas mileage promised by the hybrid manufacturers. You might have to sacrifice the size of the vehicle and the number of passengers that it will carry for better gas mileage. Can you do without the extra space or seating that you are use to? But for the rest of us, who can’t or aren’t willing to buy a new vehicle. Maybe a used or pre-owned vehicle might be more economical than your current vehicle or transportation that you are using now. Many of the same considerations in purchasing a new vehicle also apply to buying a pre-owned vehicle. Can you pay cash, so that you don’t have to add a car-note to your current financial situation? If you must finance, you should shop for the best interest rates and a term length that fits your current monthly budget. You should always have a pre-owned vehicle checked out by a certified mechanic. They can advise you on any unseen problems or possible future problems, which would help you determine if that vehicle is a sound investment or not. If you are not in the position to buy another vehicle at this time, then that leaves you with your current transportation. Since the investment has already been made, has it been a good investment? Has it been dependable? Does it still run good? Does it still look good? If it is not as dependable as you need or want it to be, you need to consider investing in the maintenance of the engine, power train, transmission and other mechanical parts of your vehicle. If there are already mechanical problems, you should definitely have these issues corrected, so that they won’t possibly cause additional problems therefore adding to the current repair costs. Also you should follow the manufacturer’s recommendations on any preventative maintenance and the schedule to which, they should be performed. These recommendations are to help you get the maximum use and the minimal downtime due to unexpected repairs, which could be reduced or avoided, by following the recommended maintenance schedule. Also keep the proper air pressure in your tires and remove any unnecessary items in your vehicle or trunk. These also help improve your gas mileage. If your vehicle still looks new, inside and out, but the engine is wore out or about to wear out, you might need to consider having the engine rebuilt or replaced. This could cost more than most of your normal repairs, but compared to the cost of another vehicle, it could keep you in a great looking vehicle for a lot less. Your vehicle still runs good and the engine still has many good dependable miles left in it, but it is starting to look old and run down. You can pay to have it repainted, if you are not capable of doing it yourself. Your finish might still look good and it just needs to be washed and waxed regularly. Keeping it washed and waxed, also helps with your gas mileage, by reducing the friction and resistance of the air as it moves over the finish. You can clean and polish the interior, such as the seats, door panels, consoles and the dashboard. If the interior is starting to fade and is beyond cleaning, there are many products available correct or improve these conditions. There are Vinyl and Carpet dyes in aerosol spray cans, which can be used on practically everything inside of the vehicle. Carpets, headliners, seats, door panels, dashboards and many other interior parts can be made to look new again. Many companies offer stock colors for most vehicle interiors and some also custom match the particular colors of your vehicle. You might want to change to color of your current interior to a completely different color. Keep in mind that you can change the color from a light color to a darker color without any problem, but you may not be able to cover a dark color with a lighter color. This also relates to dark stains on light colors, so it is very important to clean and get out the stains the best you can before using the vinyl and carpet dyes. Also beware of the over-spray of the aerosol products, by taping off and covering anything that you don’t want the over-spray to get on. These are very user friendly and can give anyone professional results. Many detail shops already offer these services, if you are not the do-it-yourself type of person. Other options for transportation during these tough economic times include public transportation, such as buses, trains, subways and even taxis. Many people reduce their transportation costs by carpooling. Riding to work, church or other events together, taking turns driving. Also use carpooling when taking your children to school, sporting events and other activities involving your children. Carpooling has also become popular when taking business trips and vacations. With these ideas and suggestions, you should be able to make good decisions on your transportation needs. So drive safe and smart, and do what you have to do to get where you need to go.

The Cruise vacation you have been planning for a year is now a reality. You’ve packed your bags with the appropriate clothes for cruise travel. You have filled out all of the cruise documentation, do this at home, don’t wait to get to your cruise ship, and now you are ready for this highly anticipated cruise. There are a few cruises tips about embarkation day that you should know before you head for your cruise vacation. Keep all of your documents with you, that includes tickets for the cruise, any vouchers, passport and any immigration forms that the cruise line has sent you. That includes bus vouchers from the cruise line that will deliver you to the ship from the airport. In is wise to pack a change of clothes in your carry on in case your baggage gets delayed. If you have purchased the vouchers from the cruise line, a cruise line representative will meet you at baggage claim and take you to the bus or van that will transport you to your cruise ship. If you decided to handle the transfer on your own, check ahead of time to find out how much a taxi will cost from the airport to the pier. It is good to know how long it will take to make the transfer so you have timed your flights accordingly. Make sure you have attached your cruise line tags with ship name, cruising date, and stateroom number. When you arrive at the pier a porter will relieve of your bags. He will expect to be tipped. The going fare is one dollar per bag. Cruise tips are always helpful so pay attention to this one. Let the cruise line make your airline reservations. The reason for this is that if your flight is delayed the cruise line will handle it. If there are several other passengers on the same flight the cruise line will delay the departure of the ship. If it’s just you and your traveling companion they will probably put you up in a hotel in the town of your embarkation and get you on the ship at the next port of call. If you opted to do it on your own, you will have to make all those arrangements. So, for safety and peace of mind let the cruise lines do it. If you have decided to go to the town of embarkation a few days before the cruise, that will not be a problem, so make your own reservations. Some travel insurance companies will pick up these expenses but make sure you read the fine print on the policy BEFORE your cruise vacation. When you get to your cruise ship, embarkation could be a little chaotic. There will be lines, especially early in the check in process. There will be a lot of stressed out people so just relax and take it in stride. After you have gone through the check in process you will be aboard and your cruise vacations begins. Here is where it pays to have all of your documentation completely filled out. Many of the cruise lines have loyalty programs so if you are a repeat cruiser many times they have preferred check in areas. Many of the cruise lines will have preferred check in for cruisers who have booked suites or mini suites. Check this out with your cruise travel agent. This is a little off topic but it’s one of the best cruise tips you will hear. Use a cruise travel agent for all of your cruise travel. It is important to deal with an agent that has sailed on many different cruise lines so they can give you an honest opinion on the difference between cruise lines. Check and see if they are CLIA certified cruise lines organization. Be careful they don’t push you onto cruise ships where they have preferred status which means they get a higher commission. Scour the internet for cruise reviews on cruise travel to back up what your travel agent is telling you. Now back to the pier. While you are checking in you will have to give the cruise line a credit card for any on board charges. Most times your room card is also your credit card and identification for getting on and off at ports while on the cruise ship. If you can get on the ship early in the process you get two benefits. One you get to have lunch and two you get the first shot at spa and beauty appointments. It will also give you time to peruse your cruise ship and then head for the pool. Having been a savvy cruise traveler you knew to bag a bathing suit into your carry on luggage. Just before you get to the gangway you will be stopped by the ships photographer and a picture will be taken to commemorate your cruise vacation. It will be on display in the ships photo gallery but you are under no obligation to purchase it. Check in procedures will be different from ship to ship even within the same cruise lines. It depends on the experience of the staff and the cooperation of the passengers. Remember that these folks that are checking you in have been working since seven o’clock in the morning off loading the people from last weeks cruise vacation. Then they turn around and start putting on a whole new set of passengers for the next cruise. The most important advice is to try to keep a cool head. One coral chunk the size of a basketball yielded 1,441 worms from 103 species. The Great Barrier Reef is comprised of more than 2,800 coral reefs. The carnival of colourful marine life that call it home provide some of the best diving and snorkelling in the world. Novice divers find it hard to describe the unforgettable encounter of seeing over a 100 fish per minute. Experienced divers will be moved by this ultimate experience. Sunny tropical weather is almost guaranteed year round in the Whitsunday Islands. Avoid school holidays for off-peak periods. Yacht charters are cheaper and the Whitsunday Islands are not as crowded. At any time of year, there is usually enough wind for a pleasant sail. Summer runs from December to March and is warm and humid with rain showers. Winter runs from June to September and is warm by day and cool at night. Trade winds usually blow slightly stronger from May to August. There is a risk of cyclones from February to March. Late September to early November are considered by some to be the best cruising weather in the Whitsunday Islands. The average daily temperature of is 27?C. January is the warmest month averaging 30?C and July the coolest month averaging 23?C. The water temperature remains a pleasant 23 - 27?C with the average year round water temperature being an inviting 24?C. The months from October through to May are “stinger” season. Stingers are jellyfish. Jellyfish are the most common wildlife hazard in the area. There are many species of jellyfish in the area; the toxicity of their stings is just as varied. Jellyfish are a problem during stinger season when swimming is not advised at all. An encounter with one is very painful and can be life threatening. You may want to hire or buy a lycra suit to swim in if you plan to swim in the ocean during those months for safety reasons. A stinger suit is usually a full body lycra suit designed to prevent the effects of jellyfish. In recent years a major element in jellyfish injuries is the Irukandji jellyfish. Tide will be a major factor in planning your sailing day. The tidal flow floods the area to the South, and ebbs to the North flowing around 3 knots. Where the islands are situated close together particularly at the Solway, Fitzallen and Hook Island passages, the tide flows at around 5 knots. Each island has it’s own fringing reef system and you will need to use your eyes carefully when choosing your yacht anchorage. You should aim to anchor before 16.00 while the light is still perfectly OK and you will be able to avoid the coral reefs. Buoy markers and public moorings are located in sensitive areas in several locations around the islands in order to protect the coral. You will find them in on Hook Island, Hayman Island and Daydream Island. You are required to either pick up one of the many mooring balls or anchor outside of the reef markers. Many yacht charter companies are based in Airlie Beach, the gateway to the Whitsunday Islands. Whitsunday Coast Airport at Proserpine is situated about 10 milers inland from Airlie Beach. Flying times are a 1 hour and 30 minutes and 2 hours 30 minutes from Brisbane and Sydney respectively. As Airlie Beach is located on a peninsula that stretches out to the Whitsunday passage, it is an ideal base. The colourful beach town is focused on serving the needs of the large number of travellers who gather there to embark on a long yacht charter or just a day sail. Airlie Beach provides many of the essential services for sailors. Shopping areas are open seven days a week for provisioning and there are plenty of dining and entertainment options as well. Whitehaven Beach is one of the most outstanding xsandscapesx in the world. It is recognized as one of the best beaches in the world it will be a highlight of your sailing holiday. Whitehaven Beach is located on the eastern side of the uninhabited Whitsunday Island; the natural silica sand spans 3 miles. The sand is said to be 98% pure Silica, giving new meaning to xsandy white beachx. This is a popular spot and you are likely to encounter other yacht charters. There are no moorings at Whitehaven Beach but plenty of space for anchoring the yacht. Hamilton Island is one of the Whitsunday Islandsx most well known resorts and offers a vast range of activities and facilities. Hamilton Island has a fifty-acre fauna park featuring kangaroos, koalas, goannas and other local wildlife. The harbour is very impressive and comprehensive: fuel, water, shipwright, electrical and engineering services and a large range of supplies are all available. It is a good idea to contact the harbourmaster a few days in advance to reserve a berth even though there are many berths for both large and smaller boats. The harbour is located on the western side of Hamilton Island and is relatively easy to navigate. With the largest island airport Hamilton Island is very convenient and some large yacht charter companies have their base on the island. South Molle Island is just 5 miles from the mainland. Take the walking trail, which brings you through lush forests to hilltop lookouts to enjoy stunning views of the surrounding islands. The many trails will provide opportunities to ponder magnificent views. Anchor the yacht on the eastern side of the jetty being sure to leave enough room for the very large water taxis to manoeuvre. Hook Island is home to a number of quite, sheltered bays that offer some relief from the multitude of yachts sailing the Whitsunday Islands. In the northern bays of Hook Island public moorings are provided and their use is encouraged. These moorings are there to protect the fantastic coral formations fringing the entire northern coast of Hook Island. Hook Island has some of the best sites in the Whitsunday Islands for snorkelling and diving. Hayman Island is another popular spot for divers. Dolphin Point offers a great diversity of marine life including clown fish, mackerel and trevally with the occasional hammerhead shark. Blue Pearl Bay is very popular with yacht charter boats and again here is much marine life to see.

Will You Take a Czech! Careers Articles | November 22, 2006  Thus read a headline in a national newspaper earlier this week. These new taxi drivers from the Czech Republic are not only learning English, before they come to the UK, but ‘The Knowledge’ too, the ‘bible’ for taxi drivers. Are the British cabbies at home learning Czech or French or German? This is one phenomenon of the expanded EU, people moving all around Europe, working and living away from their homelands. The UK’s shortage of skilled workers is acute, we won’t speculate on the reasons - the fact is that many of our skilled workers have gone somewhere else. The EU is becoming more and more inter-national just like that traditional melting pot for all comers from all lands - the USA. The team at language jobs have known for a while, that this trend of incoming foreign workers would grow and that the demand for multilingual speakers would expand and so it has over the last 30 years. The lines of communication between the UK and EU countries are becoming stronger largely because these new employees can speak at least two languages, English and their own. Sadly the focus of our schools has largely omitted the teaching of another language, apart from English. If only we learned two languages, as a matter of course as in much of Europe. Furthermore in the US where some Spanish and other language speakers have rebelled and refused to learn American (English), many Americans are now learning second languages. Perhaps our educators should take note! For many jobs, where the employee is dealing with two or more countries, the issues go deeper than just speaking more than one language - it is the requirement to comprehend and adapt to other business cultures. Communication is vital on more than simply the linguistic level. Unfortunately there are still so called enlightened business environments in some EU countries, where women working in positions higher than support or back office staff are the exception not the rule. Thankfully in the UK this is not the case and we are more advanced than many of our overseas business partners. We are not racist, sexist or ageist in these islands and there are many opportunities for multilingual speakers. We are open and enthusiastic about talent and are quick to recognize and nurture it. We are a country that has broken down barriers and invited our European cousins to come and work with us. This position will not be reversed now nor changed and we should be thankful for it and enjoy our opportunities for

Also, we have seen from the Timeline (6,000 BC) that the Harappan culture of India ? the pre-Indian civilization ? was a “great sea-faring” society. Surely, there has to be more proof that these cultures spread across the seas and traded religious ideas, if not more? Well, there is a lot more . . . The ancient boats used by the Chinese, Japanese and Indians were Sampans (trade boat.) This is interesting because in South America the tribes of the coast call them Mayu Chimpana, Chan-pan, Sam-pan ? virtually the same terms for vessels, across the “serpent” world. This idea of common languages would be easier to discover had not the invading European countries virtually destroyed them. However, there are still plenty of similarities in structure and meaning to make the case. You will notice from the very names of places above such as Atlan and Autlan (atla is a Semitic root word for “to raise”) that the letters tlan are common ? and taking into account that the Nagas were said to reside in Patalan (Ptlan) ? then we can see this fabled “antipodes” in the very language ? and especially when we consider the similarities in the worship of the serpent. In fact certain Venezuelan Indians known as Paria actually lived in the area known as Atlan. (The Parias according to Bragine in The Shadow of Atlantis, were ‘white skinned’ and possessed folklore of a great cataclysm that destroyed their original homeland.) In Sanskrit, (which is widely thought to be the root of many of the world’s languages,) Tala is “surface” and the “n” refers to the people living there. So Talan is people of the surface. The “A” suffice denotes “below” or “no longer,” so Atalan is “people of below the surface” ? just like Atlantis. Virtually the same meanings apply in the Mexican Nahuatl language. Amazingly Tala is also an epithet for the Hindu god Siva (See Siva) and therefore Talan means “the people of Siva!” Vera Cruz in the Americas is said to be derived from Ver la Cruz, which is Spanish for “Seeing the Cross” ? not an unusual thought considering this was a symbol of the ‘feathered serpent’ savior, Quetzalcoatl. However in Sanskrit Vira Kurus means simply ‘Kurus the Hero’ ? a title for the tribe which is said to have disappeared from India following the deluge; indicating through language alone, that there must have been contact ? especially when we consider the rest of the data. But how did they transport themselves? Possibly on Sampans, which we have seen are the same. But also, the savior-deity Quetzalcoatl, and the god Vishnu, (Siva) are both said to have traveled to Patala via an eagle and a raft of snakes! These snakes on the raft were nothing more than the terrifying images of dragons and serpents so often seen on ships ? coming directly through time from the Indian/Harappan and Phoenician vessels and seen also in the Norse, Viking, dragon-headed long boats. Quetzalcoatl disappeared back to Tlapallan, the place of the people of Pala, which is Bihar in India. From this place it was considered that the world’s greatest architects and builders emerged after the flood, and they spread across the globe. In all likelihood they are ultimately responsible for the world’s serpentine related stone megaliths and monoliths such as Avebury and the serpent mounds of North America. The very word ‘Atala’ ? used as an abode of these “serpents” ? also means ‘Pillar’ ? and Atala was deemed the ‘Pillar of the World’ ? which is a reference to the earth’s axis. Could there be some relationship between this “abode” and the axis of the world? This, we found would lead us on to greater secrets which can be found in our other books. The Hindus mixed, traded with and respected, the Greeks. As we can see in Taxila, there were great cross-cultural mixing pots and hives of religious and philosophical debate, and indeed it is highly likely that the stories of Atlantis evolved from Hindu myths such as the story of the city of ‘Dvaraka’ in the Mahabharat ? the capital of Krishna, which sank. The age of the serpent goes back to and beyond the deluge and was taken across the seas to the Americas. Even the architecture of Atlantis, with its many circular banks and ditches brings to mind the thousands of cup and ring marks, spirals and other serpent shapes seen on “liths” across the world. The people most at risk would normally of course be the weak the elderly and the very young, but this kind of virus would be unpredictable, so it could affect healthy people just as much. Vaccines are currently being produced, but they can take months to develop and then of course they have to be manufactured in millions to cope with any situation that might arise. There is currently one drug being manufactured which is supposed to beat the Avian Flu, but it is in such short supply, that in certain cities of the world it is fetching more than the street price of Heroin. There is absolutely no need to panic, because this particular virus might never develop in to being a problem for humanity, and most countries have contingency plans for a flu pandemic, because they do happen from time to time, thankfully not too frequently. Vehicles used and operated to provide services to the public are considered common carriers. Trains and taxis are examples of common carriers, which offer its services to the public by transporting them or their goods from one place to another. In order to operate, common carriers must first obtain a license from the state and adhere to regulations and policies imposed by law. All vehicles are expected by the state to exercise care and caution while on the road. But unlike personal vehicles which are only required to observe ordinary diligence while in transit, common carriers are obliged by the state to observe extraordinary diligence or utmost degree of care and diligence while transporting their passengers and goods. Naturally, they must employ higher degree of care because their duty involves public policy. Furthermore, when ordinary vehicles get involve on road accidents, the parties must first prove the negligence of the other party, or their non-participation thereto. On the other hand, common carriers are presumed by law to have acted negligently whenever they take part therein. The reason for this presumption is the so-called Contract of Carriage. Whenever a passenger or a shipper agrees to avail the services of a common carrier, there creates a special contract between them, which obligates the latter to transport the goods and passenger safely from one point to the other. Marwan Bitlisi (not his real name) and his two female passengers were almost home. The 35km journey north-east from Mosul had been tense but uneventful. They had heard reports that Ba’athist militias were preventing Kurds from leaving the city, that Saddam had offered a reward of $700 to any soldier for the head of a Kurd caught trying to enter the safe haven. Ahead, they could see the short metal bridge that separates the Kurdish village of Zenawa from the Arab village of Pirbo, dividing government-controlled Iraq from the autonomous area. And they could just make out the yellow flag of the Kurdistan Democratic Party fluttering from an office in their home town of Cherra, a kilometre farther on. Then, two armed men stepped into the road. Marwan braked sharply and wound down his window to ask what was wrong. “This is the final checkpoint,” barked one. “You must turn back.” As Marwan reversed his orange-and-white taxi, the other man raised an AK47 and pumped several rounds into the side. The men, who Marwan said were not in uniform, then jumped into a land cruiser -parked 30 feet away - and sped off. In the back of the taxi, one of the women lay dead, the other, seriously injured. Marwan was left with a bullet in his back. Residents from a nearby village crossed the lush green fields to the taxi and ferried the survivors to the town of Shaykhan. From there they were spirited to a “friendly” hospital back in Mosul. Marwan’s story is one of many related to the Guardian during the past two days by Kurds who have defied threats of torture and death at the hands of Iraqi authorities in Mosul in a bid for safety in the Kurdish-controlled region. In desperation they have resorted to using dangerous ancient tribal routes, disguises, and sometimes just straight bribery to beat the Iraqi blockade on the area. Most of them were luckier than Marwan and his passengers. In interviews conducted with 12 individuals who have all fled Iraq’s third city in the last five days, a consistent and disturbing picture emerges of life in wartime Mosul - one that seems to echo the tales of repression, uncertainty and raw fear emanating from cities in the south. The difference being that Mosul has not, as yet, been subject to a general coaltion assault. Along with Kirkuk, the city is a key strategic target for the coalition in its campaign to control the north of the country and secure the region’s vital oilfields. Under intensive bombing during the last week, Iraqi forces have retreated from northern front lines in order to better defend positions around the two cities. US jets continue to pound military targets outside Mosul, while Kurdish networks inside the mixed-origin city report that a presidential palace, a military barracks, and Ba’ath party offices have been hit. As the regular army continues to crumble, the city is steadily falling under the hands of the notorious Fedayeen and Ba’athist militias, said Kamel Majid, who made it to safety by disguising himself as a Yezidi, an ancient religious order whose followers live on land that straddles the Iraqi-Kurdish demarcation line. “I and my friends stood on the street and watched the bombs on the headquarters of the secret police and the military intelligence,” he said. “They also hit the Fedayeen building in Faisaliyah [district], and another government building on the road to Dohuk.” He said he had heard few reports of civilian casualties, and few reports of casualties among Iraqi officials. Abdul Hamid, a Kurdish taxi driver from Mosul, said: “They have all moved into the residential districts. They are wearing civilian clothes and changing their locations. They are going to fight dirty and use the people as shields.” He also said that the pro-Saddam groups were storing their arsenal in schools and even in churches. Azzad Gurdi, who has left a wife and two children in the city, fled because he refused to take up arms in support of Saddam. “I know they would come to get me eventually,” he said. “My wife will tell them I have gone to Baghdad on business.” None of the interviewees predicted that an uprising in Mosul would occur any time soon. “Most people are too scared even to move,” said Rizgar Mohammed, a Mosul shopkeeper. “There are bombs likely to fall on their heads or Ba’athists waiting to enlist them. They just pray to God that it will be all over soon and that they will have their freedom.”

Last Saturday I joined a hundred or so UK bound students at a pre-departure briefing seminar in Manila. The four hour programme, organised by the British Council, was packed with helpful information on British culture, student life, cost of living, part-time working, and getting around the UK. The 300 Peso (around £3.00) entrance fee was well worth it and most of the delegates I spoke to felt they got a lot out of the day. Delegates also received an information pack including a brilliant pocket guide to life in the UK, which I would recommend to anyone considering travelling to these shores. The speakers were well informed about life in the UK and their facts and figures were accurate and up to date. The presentation was mostly upbeat and positive about life in the UK, apart from the obvious high cost of living. IMMIGRATION MATTERS - SPECIAL REPORT 9th August 2006 By Charles Kelly Immigration Adviser and co-author of “How 2 Come to the UK to Live Work Study or Visit”. Whilst not wanting to appear negative, I would just like to add a few words of caution to the young students embarking on their new adventure this autumn. Crime Street crime and drug related crime can be a problem in the major cities, so use your head. That is, to think, not to do a “Zidane” on anyone who criticises your mother! Follow the British Council’s guidance on security in their pre-departure briefing pack or visit www.educationuk.org. Airports You are particularly vulnerable upon arrival after a long tiring journey. Even seasoned travellers have lost bags during a momentary lapse of concentration. An American friend of mine who had travelled all over the world lost his luggage at Gatwick Airport. He put his bag down for a second whilst searching for change at a train ticket machine. By the time he looked down again his leather bag and flying jacket, which he wore in Vietnam, had disappeared. Try and get someone to meet you at the airport if at all possible and avoid travelling into central London unless absolutely necessary. If you are travelling on to another city use the excellent National Express coach service which has terminals at all major UK airports. The coaches can get you to most parts of the country from right outside the airport without the need to take two or three trains or travel into town to pick up rail connections. The service is reliable and cheap and can be booked on line at www.nationalexpress.com. In general the UK has an excellent public transport system. Drinking Culture The British love of alcohol was affectionately covered during the seminar with pictures of one of the speakers in a cosy pub with friends. Fine, there’s nothing quite like a British pub and having a few beers with friends is one of life’s great pleasures. But people from what I would describe as “non-drinking” cultures may be shocked at the level of alcohol consumption in the UK especially by young people. Here in Makati’s Greenbelt area in the central business district I see hundreds of young people enjoying a glass of wine or bottle of San Miguel beer in the many open air bars and café’s. Alcohol is more widely available than in the UK and yet I have never seen a drunken Filipino causing a disturbance or being ejected from a bar. I have never even seen a drunken Filipino in a bar. You will not find scenes of inebriated Filipino’s spilling out onto the streets of Manila at two in the morning, as is commonplace in city centres in the UK. Go to any University town on a midweek “student” night, where students are offered cheap alcohol or “drink as much as you like” promos, and you may be shocked by what you see. You will also find where most of their parent’s money and student loans are going, i.e. straight down the toilet! Alcohol in the Philippines is taken in moderation and is not the primary focus of a night out. At any Filipino party, the food is the main event not the booze. Filipino women do not generally drink, or smoke, and may be surprised at how much young British women drink on a typical night out. They will be even more surprised by their “ladish” (masculine) behaviour; out-drinking the men and falling down in the gutter unable to stand up after a belly full of alco-pops and Vodka mixers. Take it easy on the alcohol especially the deceptive mixers which taste sweet and innocent, but are just as potent as a premium strength lager or shot of Whisky. Until you get to know the local scene, be careful and choose your pubs and company wisely. Unless you are with trusted friends, NEVER leave your drink unattended. A good friend of mine’s daughter was raped after having her drink “spiked” (date rape drugged) in her local pub. Clubs Clubs are a whole different culture on which I am not qualified to write, being around twenty years too old. At the risk of sounding like your boring Dad, my advice is once again “be careful”. Some of the clubs and clubbing districts can be pretty wild places compared to non-western countries. Mini Cabs Mini Cabs are licensed taxis which can only be hired from a Mini Cab Office or ordered by telephone. Unlike the famous London ‘Black Taxis’ they are not allowed to pick up passengers on the street. Arriving back in Washington after a trip abroad last week, I looked up at one of the airport shuttle buses to see a face from the past that has returned to haunt the nation once more. There, among a crowd of tired commuters, was Al Gore. In a blazer and open-necked shirt, the weekend uniform of the former US vice-president seemed invisible to the passengers around him. Hemmed in near the bus’s automatic doors, he was fingering the internet pager that was his ever-present companion on his belt in the US election 2000 campaign - on which an aide sent him the now-famous election night message: “Never surrender. It’s not over yet”, launching a month of recounts in Florida. It must surely prey on his mind that had it not been for a few hundred confused pensioners and a fistful of hanging chads, he would now be flying across the country on Air Force One instead of having to compete for overhead baggage room on scheduled flights. Now Gore is back in Washington to decide whether to seek vengeance in a 2004 rematch - two years is not a long time in presidential politics. The other Democratic challengers, sensing that President Bush may be vulnerable after all, are already buzzing around Iowa and New Hampshire, the key first states in the primaries, setting up offices and political networks. The race will get under way the moment results are in for this November’s congressional elections. Gore is already dabbling in electoral foreplay. He has shaved off the beard that helped mask the bitterness of defeat for more than a year and is talking to his former donors. Last week he published a lengthy attack on President Bush in the New York Times. Once our shuttle-bus had stopped, I struggled to catch up with him in a vain attempt to gauge his intentions, but he vanished into the throng. In any case, he would undoubtedly have told me no more than he has told everyone else - that he will make up his mind over whether to run or not, by the end of the year. His indecision is not helping divisions within the Democratic party that his possible candidacy has opened. Among Democratic voters, Gore sweeps the field at the moment. In a poll last month 46% said they would back him, compared to 6% backing for his ex-running mate, Joe Lieberman, and 5% or less for all the other would-be nominees. The lead reflects his superior name recognition, which will naturally erode as other contenders had their turn at the national microphone during the primaries. It also points to a widespread feeling among the party ranks that Gore was robbed of winning election 2000 by the electoral college system, and the intervention of the supreme court’s conservative majority. After all, as the ex-vice-president’s supporters will never tire of pointing out, he won the nationwide popular vote by half a million votes. In the higher ranks of the Democratic party, however, there is deep resistance to Gore’s resurrection. With eight years of Democratic prosperity and the feeling that he was being fielded against an untested opponent, many believe election 2000 should easily have been won by Gore. Instead, the detractors argue, he threw the election away by the constant reshaping of his rather wooden personality - which alienated so many of his campaign workers. The row over Gore goes much deeper than his campaign tactics, to the unresolved question at the heart of the Democratic party’s identity. Namely, is it still the “champion of the downtrodden and neglected”, or the “vehicle of a classless society driven by the vibrant entrepreneurship of the new economy”? The dilemma was evident at a meeting last month of the centrist Democratic leadership council in New York, where the party’s fresh talent were supposed to show off their vote-winning abilities. Instead, the news reports focused on an argumentative postmortem of the Gore 2000 campaign, in which Lieberman picked up the pro-business banner by criticising his running mate for pursuing a too populist agenda. Others argued, that by his attempts to appear all things to all focus groups, Gore was watering down party positions on core issues until they were all but invisible. Ever aloof, he snubbed the New York gathering, pointedly choosing to meet his publisher in a restaurant around the corner instead. But weighed in soon after with a New York Times opinion piece arguing: “The suggestion from some in our party that we should no longer speak the truth, especially at a time like this, strikes me as bad politics and, worse, wrong in principle.” Faced with a dilemma, most of the serious Democratic contenders have taken the Bill Clinton approach, dashing for the middle ground whilst claiming to move the debate onwards and upwards. On the pro-union end of the spectrum, Dick Gephardt, the party leader in the House of Representatives, and John Kerry, a Massachusetts senator, have gone to great lengths to stress they are not anti-business, merely anti-corruption. Meanwhile, the North Carolina senator, John Edwards, went out of his way to show he had some fight in him, with a blistering attack on Bush cronyism. Edwards is seen within the party as an exciting new prospect, with relative youth, clean-cut looks, and a respectable reputation. However, he is a former personal injury lawyer, a profession held in even lower regard than journalism by most Americans, and remains relatively obscure. In politics, of course, money is often the cure for obscurity, and the North Carolina senator is already amassing an impressive campaign fund. So far he has raised over $4m (£2.6m) - significantly more than any other contender. Many of Edwards’s biggest financial backers funded Gore in election 2000, and the former vice-president must worry that the well may be dry by the time he makes up his mind whether to run. If he does run, Lieberman has promised to drop out of the race. The party’s congressional leaders Gephardt and Tom Daschle, are generally viewed as too partisan for voters necessary to win a presidential election. Barring the emergence of any new stars, that would leave Edwards and Gore, the new pitted against the old, or - depressingly for the Democrats - the untested against the uninspired.

Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.” -Aristotle Procrastination is the single habit at the root of so many problems that plague all of us at one time or another - challenges with managing our time, relationships, projects, and information. Procrastination is doing low-priority tasks and activities instead of the high-priority ones which so often contribute the most to our success. For some, procrastination becomes a harmful habit which impedes personal and professional development. If procrastination is so harmful, why do we do it? We tend to put off doing things for the following reasons: **They are unpleasant to do. **They are difficult or complex to do. **They involve making tough decisions that can be overwhelming. When we don’t want to do something that is unpleasant or difficult, we find less important things to do that will keep us “busy” so we have an excuse for why we didn’t get around to it. But putting something off does not make it go away, and postponing it often just makes it worse. As someone once said, “Killing time murders opportunities.” I’ll share a key to success that I’ve learned from my own life experiences… If you want to make big changes in your life, start by making small ones. What small change have you made recently that yielded positive results for you? By thinking about what is working, you are focusing on the positive. Remember that we attract whatever we choose to give our attention to — whether wanted or unwanted. When we focus on what we want, we are more likely to attract it into our lives. Unlike a long list of unrealistic New Year’s resolutions that usually get broken before the end of January, small changes can create a ripple effect of another small change, followed by another. In other words, small changes can lead to other related changes. Next thing you know, you’ve generated an unstoppable tidal wave! Ask yourself this question: What’s one thing that, if you did consistently, would make the greatest positive difference in your life? I asked a client (I’ll call her Kate) this question a couple of years ago during a coaching call. Her initial response was that she wanted to start taking the train to work instead of driving her car in horrible rush-hour traffic. But Kate said she could not do that because she often needed the car to get to meetings during her workday. I asked her if there were other means of transportation available to her (subway, taxi, etc.) on days she had appointments that were not walking distance from her office. Kate was not sure how it would work, but she was willing to commit to a one-month trial period. I spoke with her at the end of her first week. She recognized how this one change was already having a tremendous positive impact on her life. Over time, the impact grew larger. The ripple effect was doing its thing! Here are some of the benefits Kate has experienced: * Kate is able to sleep 30 minutes later each workday, since she actually gets to work quicker by taking the train. * Kate has saved enough money in gas and parking fees to pay for her coaching sessions with me. * Kate has time for her professional reading, which she does in the mornings on her way to work. * Kate has time for pleasure reading on the way home. (She had not read a novel in years!) * Because she has to catch the train home at a specific time, Kate leaves the office at a set time instead of staying for “just a few more minutes” (which was never just a few minutes!) to get caught up. * Kate is conducting more business using technology (teleconference calls and webinars), which saves her a lot of time that she used to spend getting to and from meetings. Others appreciate this time savings, too! * By leaving the driving to someone else, Kate’s stress level is much lower when she gets home. * Kate’s reduced stress levels gives her added energy, and she now works out at a nearby health club a few times a week. (Before, she barely had the energy to crawl in the door of her home. Once she got there, she rarely ventured out at night.) * Kate met a wonderful man at her train stop near her home, and they started dating last year. (They’re still dating, and the future looks promising!) I could keep listing the effects this one change has had on Kate’s life. It’s a perfect example of the ripple effect in action — all of this by making one change, which led to another, and another. This article is about the Airport Express and subway system in Beijing. You can find some useful information in it if you are planning your China vacations now. The speed of the Beijing subway train is about 73.3 km / hour. Because the subway system of Beijing is very new and lots of new technologies are used to build it, most people believe that the Beiijing subway system should be advanced and convinient. But I find that this subway system is not convinient for the passengers and lots of time is wasted in the transfer stations, especially for the Line 13. I live in Beijing for almost 10 years and I think I can get a good understanding of the subway system of Beijing. It’s only 3 minutes’ ride from Jishuitan to Beijing north railway station. From the digital map, I got this info: (1). Take the Line 2 subway in Jishuitan and get off on Xizhimen. (2). Walk 150 meters and you will get to the Beijing north railway station. I decided to take the subway for this trip. At first, I thought that it will only cost me 10 minutes to get to my destination by subway. I entered the Entrance C of the Jishuitan station. There is no down escalator here and I have to walk down by myself. I am ok with this. But it will be a horrible experience for those passengers with big luggages. I took a train to Xizhimen. When I arrived at Xizhimen, I saw a direction board telling me to go to Exit A (for the Beijing north railway station). There are a lot of passengers in this subway station and you will see many people carrying big luggages here. But they have to walk up and down too in this subway station. (no escalator for the passengers who transfer to the Line 13 subway) You can imagine how hard this subway transfer could be for these people. This railway station is not just inconvenient for the passengers, it is very time consuming too. I entered the Jishuitan station on 14:02 and get to my destination - Beijing north railway station - on 14:40. Wow! 38 minutes! I spent only 5 minutes taking the subway train and the other 33 minutes was all used in the subway transfer. (many up and down stairs in the Xizhimen station) The Xizhimen transfer station is a nightmare for most passengers but it will be nothing comparing with the Military Museum Station. You will have to get off in this station if you wanna go to the Beijing west railway station by subway. There is a subway station named “Beijing west railway station” in the blueprint of the Beijing subway system. But this station is not ready till today and all the passengers have to walk to the Beijing west railway station with their big luggages. To be honest, this is not a good choice. It is too far away from the Military Museum subway station to the Beijing West Railway Station and you will be exhausted if you choose to go there on foot. You’d better take a taxi or bus instead.(more info about the Shanghai airfare, China vacations and Beijing airfare at Travel2ChinaInfo Dot COM) As I know, the Fuxinmen transfer station and Guomao transfer station are very time consuming too. In my point of view, the Beijing subway system is not very convinient if you have to do some transfers to get to your destination. These transfers will cost you too much time and energy. In this case, the taxi or bus will be better for you. The Airport Express is designed for the passengers to the Beijing Capital Airport. But most people choose to take the airport bus now instead of this Airport Express subway line. I took this Airport Express once. It is not comparable with the Airport Express in Hongkong or Paris, although these two were built earlier. There is no place for big luggages in the train and you have to put your luggages in the aisle. When I get off at the Dongzhimen station, I was disappointed again. You will have to carry your big luggages by hand because there is no escalator here too just like the Xizhimen transfer station. I talked to the security guy and he told me that all the passengers from the airport have to use the stairs and he heard lots of complains about this issue. The transfer in the Dongzhimen station is very time consuming too. There are things that you expect to see on Park Avenue in Manhattan - chauffeurs waiting for their passengers, the children of millionaires out strolling with their nannies - and then there are things you don’t, such as the union rally held there this week. New York’s legions of uniformed doormen are nothing if not polite, but their ultimatum was firm: if their demands for improved pay are not met by midnight tonight the city will face its first doormen’s strike for 15 years. “You would think if any group of people would not want to demonstrate what life would be like without them it would be doormen,” the comedian Jerry Seinfeld once observed. Without a doorman, “people open the door, they walk in … who’s gonna walk out next? The guys who clean your windshield at the traffic light, with the dirty rag?” But the threatened absence of the city’s 28,000 apartment-building workers would not pass unnoticed. Doormen occupy a unique and complex niche in the New York class system. The services they provide may seem superfluous - holding open the door, taking delivery of packages, hailing cabs - but for wealthier residents their symbolic value is far greater. They demarcate the boundary between Manhattan’s most pristine apartment blocks and the street outside. And they serve, quite simply, as living reminders to the tenants that they are rich enough to afford a doorman. “Park Avenue stands for money,” Mike Fishman, president of the local 32BJ union, which represents doormen, told the rally. “The rich are getting richer, and what’s happening to the middle class? The middle class is becoming the working poor.” Members are protesting against a wage freeze imposed by building owners, who say they must offset the costs of providing workers with health insurance. It is not yet a case of class war, more a civilised class disagreement, but it has thrown into relief the contradictions of the role - what Peter Bearman, a Columbia University professor who wrote an anthropological study of New York doormen, calls “too much closeness in a context of too much distance”. Doormen know everything about their tenants, Prof Bearman discovered, but tenants have a tendency to look through their doormen. Perhaps in an effort to render their role more palatable 90% of doormen say their main function is to provide security. But about the same percentage, according to Prof Bearman’s research, say they have never had to deal with a security incident. David, a doorman on duty in Park Avenue this week who did not want his full name to be used, said: “I don’t want to say they’re spoilt, but it costs a lot of money to live here and a doorman is one of the things you get for the money.” He confirmed the widespread suspicion that living in a doorman building essentially eliminates one’s privacy. “You do get to know things. I’m not gonna name names, but there was this gentleman - he’s dead now - and his wife travelled in Europe twice a year. The moment she was gone, like clockwork, his girlfriends would be round. But what can you do? You say ‘Hello, how are you? Isn’t it a lovely day?’” Some residents had worked out that having personal conversations in the building’s lobby was a bad idea, David said. “They speak real hushed here, because they know the doorman can hear. And then as soon as they’re in the elevator, they have really personal conversations.” He shook his head. “But the thing is - we have an elevator guy. What’s he gonna do? You can’t stuff your ears.”

British people like to form orderly queues.  Believe it or not, Anthropologists have documented the fact that practically any group of British people will naturally form an orderly (and patient) queue.   Beware that you will certainly feel the wrath of the queue if you try to push-in.  Strangely, although the people in the queue may be seethe with indignant rage at a queue jumper, it is unlikely that any of them will let you know how angry they are.  2. The Understatement and Daily Humour This situation contains a very important truth about British people ? they do not like to make a fuss.  Therefore overseas students should not assume that if someone is not complaining they don’t mind what is happening ? often that is far from the truth.  Furthermore, English people are well known to have a somewhat dry and ironic sense of humour.  Indeed, much conversation has an undercurrent of humour 3 British people value punctuality Never be late for an appointment, especially a dinner invitation.  Brits are very fond of punctuality and will take it as a personal insult should you arrive late.  If you are going to be late it is vital that you telephone your hosts and explain the problem, as soon as possible. 4. Drive with care Like one thirds of the nations of this world, cars in the UK drive on the left side of the road so always be mindful of that, especially when crossing the road ? always look right first! UK drivers tend to be very polite.  In many countries, a driver who flashes his headlamps means ‘get out of my way’ ? in the UK it means the opposite and is  used to signal to an on-coming driver that you are allowing him to pass.  Britain is a relatively small island and the cities tend to be buys, therefore driving laws are tough and strictly enforced particularly drink driving (which is a criminal offence). 5. The Weather The weather in the UK is very changeable and it has been said that the UK can have four seasons in a single day.  Many overseas students will have heard that it rains a lot in the UK.  This is unfortunately true, and there can be quite a lot of wind, especially in Northern towns such as Manchester,  so remember to bring warm and waterproof clothing.  However, the sun does follow the rain and the UK weather is very much liked for it’s variety. 6. Security and Personal Safety The UK is relatively safe but some simple rules can help keep you safe.  Always lock all doors and windows.  Collect money during day light hours.  Women should try to travel with others.  Taxis are often the best form and safest of transport, but always use a company that is well known. Childers of Mississippi and Lance Corporal Jose Gutierrez of California became the first Americans to die for the ambitions of the White House warlords and the little man with an inferiority complex who should never have become president ? even in his dreams. History is a strange and fascinating tale. What historians make of this president will be a fiercely fought battle between those with integrity and those with a political agenda. While past presidencies have been held somewhat in check by the knowledge that historians will hold them to account, the current lot believes it is immune to historical judgment. They are determined to control the pen with which the tale is told. They will discredit all accounts contrary to their interests and reduce history itself to the basest form of propaganda. If it were not so tragic, it would be amusing to observe the machinations of media in reporting the war and occupation of Iraq. In the absence of compelling distracter stories, they seem to have awakened from a long slumber (if only momentarily) to discover there is still a war going on. They pretend that the latest series of attacks represent a sudden upsurge in response to political events. In truth, the violence has been a steady rumble, geared only to opportunity, and the media treatment is a cover for their collective failure to report on the ongoing disaster. On April 20, a fifth attempted assassination of interim Prime Minister Ayad Allawi fails, four Iraqis are killed and thirteen wounded in Baghdad. Three police officers are killed, nineteen bullet-ridden bodies are identified in Haditha, and fifty bodies float down the Tigres, confirming rumors of mass hostage taking and executions. On April 22, a car bomb near a Baghdad mosque kills eleven and wounds 20, the bodies of nineteen soldiers are found near Baiji, a government official in Mosul is assassinated, and fourteen mercenaries are killed when their chopper is shot from the sky. On April 23, a roadside bomb kills nine soldiers and wounds 20 outside Baghdad, another kills a civilian in Samarra, another on the road to the Baghdad airport kills one and wounds seven, more bombs kill two soldiers and injure three in Yusifiya, two civilians are killed in Baquba, and two more are killed in Basra with two children wounded. President Bush appeals to Congress in his weekly radio address for another $81.9 billion for the war effort. His voice is confident and his words are optimistic. Progress is being made. The Iraqi security forces outnumber US forces. “Like free people everywhere, Iraqis want to be defended and led by their own countrymen.” On April 24, bombs in Baghdad kill fifteen, wounding 40, while bombs in Tikrit kill six police and wound 35 unidentified others. The march of death continues unabated, unaffected by the words of the president or the latest moves of the Iraqi government. The end of April and the beginning of May bring a torrent of violence, death and bloodshed. News stories roll out a daily death toll of mostly anonymous victims: 50, 70, 120, 140, 200, 245 dead and at least twice that many wounded. Occupation forces round up the usual suspects but indiscriminate mass arrests have no discernable effect. The violence continues. The civil war is on. A reporter reveals it now costs $35,000 for a six-mile taxi ride to the airport. Lacking a small mercenary army, you cannot get in and you cannot get out. Welcome to Baghdad: The Gates of Hell are open for business. Like the fall of Saddam, the appointment of an interim government and the election, itself, the christening of a new ministry did not have the desired effect. The vast majority of casualties on the side of the occupying forces are no longer American soldiers; they are allied Iraqis, police, militia and contractors ? the euphemism of choice for mercenaries. How much is a man paid to enter the Gates of Hell and descend to its lower depths like Dante and his guide Virgil? It is a closely guarded secret and one reason for the extraordinary cost of this endeavor. There is a special place in Dante’s inferno for those who perform evil deeds for money and an even crueler place for those who paid the hired torturers, killers and assassins so that their hands would remain unstained. Iraq may not approach the mind-numbing destruction of Vietnam but it is more resembling Algiers with every passing day. For those who require historical review, Algiers was the last stop for French ambitions of a new Napoleonic era. At the beginning of the Muslim uprising, the insurgents were demeaned as terrorists and thugs. The insurgency would never last. The people of Algiers loved their French masters. The people of France, though never directly consulted, supported the continued occupation. The Battle of Algiers raged on for six years. At every turn, the French proclaimed imminent victory. At every turn, they were wrong. Indiscriminate killings, mass imprisonment, torture, bombs carried in baskets by women and children, assassinations, strikes, and the insurgency refused to die. It would calm until the occupiers grew complacent and then it would erupt again. After six years of costly failure, the endgame was clear (in fact, it was always clear) and the verdict in French public opinion finally sealed its fate. Though they left a nation torn and tattered, impoverished and divided, the occupation of Algiers failed. Historically, the only occupations that ever succeeded were those that employed mass murder and genocide (i.e., the conquest of North America). The occupation of Iraq will reach the same inevitable conclusion as Algiers. It is only a question of how long and how costly. Much depends on the verdict of the American people. We have been shielded from the daily horrors of Iraq but we cannot escape our fair share of responsibility. It would be too easy to fix all of the blame for the atrocities of this war at the president’s feet but it would be neither just nor accurate. He has had his collaborators, beginning with Tony Blair and ending with those who sold out at first sighting of the purple finger of fate. The White House has the excuse of rose-colored glasses. They were blinded by their own twisted sense of destiny. The turncoats should have known better than to believe in the value of a media controlled event. They would have known if they were not so eager to cut and run. It is difficult being right in America today. It is difficult to maintain a career in the media and oppose governmental outrage. It is difficult proclaiming the obvious: that both dominant parties are wrong, have been wrong, and will continue to be wrong as long as money is on the table. “All we like sheep have gone astray.” Isaiah 53:6. Critics of the Bush administration are wrong when they claim that the warlords are victims of their own faith. If they had any faith at all, they would dismantle the Gates of Hell now while it is still possible. If they believed in the sanctity of life and the rewards of virtue, they would have ended the suffering long ago. “Long is the way and hard, that out of hell leads up to light.” John Milton. I did not know Therrel Childers or Jose Gutierrez. I did not know their friends, loved ones and families though I am relatively certain they had them. I did not know their mothers or fathers or the enduring grief they must live with as the years of absence accumulate. I do not know the names of the first Iraqis to die in this war but I am no less certain they had friends, loved ones and families as well. I am certain that their sorrow and grief is no less enduring. I am certain that their numbers are far greater and their nightmare is the ongoing hell of their daily lives under the occupation of their native land. Jazz. She said that it was at 12.9%, which was my usual rate for this card.I do carry some debt on other cards (it helps with my credit rating to be making regular payments) but all the other debt I have is at lower rates than this card. I mentioned that I had no other debt that was at a higher rate than what she was offering.She then replied that I could just take the money as a cash advance and do whatever I wanted with it.So I asked her if I understood correctly what she was offering. “So you are offering to raise my interest rate if I get further into debt by getting a cash advance?”"Yes, you can have up to $9000 and do whatever you like with the extra cash,” she replied. I was amused that she said that I could “have” not “borrow” the money and it would be “extra cash” rather than “additional debt”. But after all, she is in sales and the words “have” and “extra cash” are much more enticing than the more realistic alternatives - “borrow” and “additional debt”.I politely told her that I was not interested in raising my interest rate or borrowing more money, “but thanks anyway.”I then wondered how many other people would jump at the opportunity to pocket a quick $10,000 at the “low” rate of 15.9%. I was also amused that she encouraged me to pay off my high interest debt with this money. Well, to my standards 15.9% is high interest debt. Granted it’s not the 24-25% charged by department stores but still it was more than I was currently being charged on any of my other cards.Shouldn’t an offer that would appeal to me be one that offered me money at a lower rate? Her offer seemed backwards. She was trying to entice me with the vision of “extra cash” in my hand to do whatever I would like.I took a moment to do some financial math (the most important kind) on this offer and found that if I had a current balance on that credit card of $4000 at my current interest rate of 12.9%, I would be paying about $43 a month in interest charges.If I had accepted her offer for an additional $9000 at 15.9% (and I suspect that my regular rate of 12.9% would have risen to the 15.9% rate also), I would be paying about $172 a month, exactly 4 times what I am currently paying. If I made a payment of $200 a month to pay off this debt, I would be paying for over 12 and a half years.What I learned from this experience is that I should get into the credit card business. Maybe I’ll check on some bank and financial institution stocks today. With offers like this they must be making money. Yesterday’s UNAids report, which shows that almost 30 million people in sub-Saharan Africa are already infected with HIV or Aids, has a particularly chilling relevance to Zambia. The country has one of the world’s highest rates of HIV/Aids infection, with nearly 20% of the adult population infected. Livingstone, a tourist centre perched above Victoria Falls, has the country’s highest infection rate: 31% of adults, according to government statistics. Despite the desperate statistics, the town offers glimpses of hope. A project to train taxi drivers to act as safe sex teachers and mentors is one of several reaching out to groups exposed to the threat of the virus. “Aids is a severe problem here. We all know people who have died and people who are suffering. A taxi driver died recently,” says cabbie David Kanandu. “We’ve learned how to protect ourselves and we are telling others. We give pamphlets and condoms to our passengers. We tell them how to reduce their risks.” Fishermen, army soldiers, truck drivers, teenagers and prostitutes are all targeted in programmes designed at Livingstone’s Sepo centre, which receives funding and training from the Brighton-based International HIV/Aids Alliance. The taxi drivers attended a two-day weekend workshop two months ago and now they are enthusiastic sex counsellors. “This has opened our minds,” says Mr Kanandu. “We’ve learned that having sex must be done with knowledge. That way we can avoid catching Aids.” The taxi drivers hope to expand their programme. They are talking about setting up an outdoor screening of sex education videos near their ranks. “People would come to see the videos and then we could have group discussions,” says Wilson Mvula, 28. A key part of the community programmes is the promotion of voluntary testing and counselling. “Everyone is a winner in the testing,” says nurse Precious Mafo, who runs the Maramba clinic’s testing centre. “Those who are negative are obviously happy and are encouraged to take steps to avoid infection. Those who are positive are counselled to live as positively as possible, to have good diets and habits, and this also helps many people.” Good diet helps, but only to a point. As the UNAids report points out, anti-retroviral drugs are desperately scarce in Africa, and Zambia is no exception. With 1 million Zambians living with HIV and Aids, it is estimated that 100,000 need anti-retrovirals immediately. Jethro Muchindu, 47, found out he was HIV positive in 1987. “I have been doing very well for a long time, but I would really love to get on the anti-retrovirals. Sometimes I get sick and I worry about my recovery. Those drugs would really help.” Out of reach The anti-retrovirals are limited to a few private clinics and the University Teaching hospital in Lusaka. Only a few Zambians can afford the ?325 a year needed for the treatment. “The cost is totally out of reach of most Zambians,” says Daphetone Siame, director of the Zambian programme for the HIV/Aids Alliance. At Hillcrest secondary school more than 100 students cram into a classroom to attend the Family Life Club, an after-class activity that concentrates on sex education. The teenage students groan in disgust when given descriptions of vaginal and anal sex and other sexual behaviour. “Don’t be fooled by their innocence,” says a club organiser. “Many of them, especially the girls, have already had sex. Yet they don’t know very much.” Kaleesh Bwalya, 17, is the head of the club. She stands in front of the group and and captures attention by mentioning headboy Henry Kalubi when describing someone who might carry HIV or other infections. “Look at Henry, he is clean, good looking, he’s a good student, he’s got cash in his pocket. But even he could have an STI,” she says to rounds of laughter. Henry says he does not mind the embarrassment of talking about sex. “As youths we must take up a role in educating one another. We are surrounded by Aids and it is only through education that we can avoid getting it ourselves.”

They also offer their passengers a more unusual service: condoms, along with advice on safe sex. Yesterday’s UNAids report, which shows that almost 30 million people in sub-Saharan Africa are already infected with HIV or Aids, has a particularly chilling relevance to Zambia. The country has one of the world’s highest rates of HIV/Aids infection, with nearly 20% of the adult population infected. Livingstone, a tourist centre perched above Victoria Falls, has the country’s highest infection rate: 31% of adults, according to government statistics. Despite the desperate statistics, the town offers glimpses of hope. A project to train taxi drivers to act as safe sex teachers and mentors is one of several reaching out to groups exposed to the threat of the virus. “Aids is a severe problem here. We all know people who have died and people who are suffering. A taxi driver died recently,” says cabbie David Kanandu. “We’ve learned how to protect ourselves and we are telling others. We give pamphlets and condoms to our passengers. We tell them how to reduce their risks.” Fishermen, army soldiers, truck drivers, teenagers and prostitutes are all targeted in programmes designed at Livingstone’s Sepo centre, which receives funding and training from the Brighton-based International HIV/Aids Alliance. The taxi drivers attended a two-day weekend workshop two months ago and now they are enthusiastic sex counsellors. “This has opened our minds,” says Mr Kanandu. “We’ve learned that having sex must be done with knowledge. That way we can avoid catching Aids.” The taxi drivers hope to expand their programme. They are talking about setting up an outdoor screening of sex education videos near their ranks. “People would come to see the videos and then we could have group discussions,” says Wilson Mvula, 28. A key part of the community programmes is the promotion of voluntary testing and counselling. “Everyone is a winner in the testing,” says nurse Precious Mafo, who runs the Maramba clinic’s testing centre. “Those who are negative are obviously happy and are encouraged to take steps to avoid infection. Those who are positive are counselled to live as positively as possible, to have good diets and habits, and this also helps many people.” Good diet helps, but only to a point. As the UNAids report points out, anti-retroviral drugs are desperately scarce in Africa, and Zambia is no exception. With 1 million Zambians living with HIV and Aids, it is estimated that 100,000 need anti-retrovirals immediately. Jethro Muchindu, 47, found out he was HIV positive in 1987. “I have been doing very well for a long time, but I would really love to get on the anti-retrovirals. Sometimes I get sick and I worry about my recovery. Those drugs would really help.” Out of reach The anti-retrovirals are limited to a few private clinics and the University Teaching hospital in Lusaka. Only a few Zambians can afford the ?325 a year needed for the treatment. “The cost is totally out of reach of most Zambians,” says Daphetone Siame, director of the Zambian programme for the HIV/Aids Alliance. At Hillcrest secondary school more than 100 students cram into a classroom to attend the Family Life Club, an after-class activity that concentrates on sex education. The teenage students groan in disgust when given descriptions of vaginal and anal sex and other sexual behaviour. “Don’t be fooled by their innocence,” says a club organiser. “Many of them, especially the girls, have already had sex. Yet they don’t know very much.” Kaleesh Bwalya, 17, is the head of the club. She stands in front of the group and and captures attention by mentioning headboy Henry Kalubi when describing someone who might carry HIV or other infections. “Look at Henry, he is clean, good looking, he’s a good student, he’s got cash in his pocket. But even he could have an STI,” she says to rounds of laughter. Henry says he does not mind the embarrassment of talking about sex. “As youths we must take up a role in educating one another. We are surrounded by Aids and it is only through education that we can avoid getting it ourselves.”

A family fleeing from Cuba commandeered a vintage taxi and sailed it 70 miles across the sea to the United States. Coastguards spotted the sky blue 1950s vehicle bobbing across the waves towards them as they patrolled the Florida Straits. The DIY water-taxi had been fitted with a boat prow and a propeller to help it cut through the rough seas. Hanging out of the windows were up to 13 Cubans, including two children. The refugees, some of whom are thought to have been among the so-called Truckonauts who attempted the voyage in a converted pick-up in 2003, were given lifejackets and taken ashore by the US coastguard. “Hopefully this time they won’t go back,” said Mariana Diaz, a Cuban exile in Miami, who claimed that her nephew, Rafael Diaz Reyes, was one of those aboard the taxi. Similar attempts to reach Florida in floating vehicles in July 2003 and February 2004 ended in his repatriation.
