brazilian artist ernesto neto's traveling tented sculpture is an immersive space, which surrounds the viewer in a fleshy, dense orange interior. occupying the tactile, walk-in structure are floor-to-ceiling, stretchy fabric tubes, likening themselves to bodily membranes and evoking the sense of being inside a womb, or even a digestive system. the experience completely encloses participants in vibrant shades of orange and yellow chroma, beckoning them to touch and manipulate the walls and malleable hanging tunnels. changing sunlight coming from the exterior of the temporary pavilion causes the internal space to become a constantly evolving atmosphere. the nomadic sculpture is part of doug aitken's 'station to station'-- a collaborative cultural project currently journeying the united states by train, making creative ‘pit-stops’ in various cities along the way.

the hotel blends into its environment, forming another dune in the vast expanse of desert. the design uses prefabricated load-bearing panels, reducing the amount of pressure applied to its foundations: a lightweight solution without the need for concrete or water. the replicated triangular framework further strengthens the hotel's form and is repeated throughout the scheme.
Design group Luminair recently unveiled their first shelters, fantastical suspended Tree Tents.
The product of three years’ work, Tree Tents provide an intriguing
model for sustainable wildlife housing that enables a non-invasive
solution for campers and forest service personnel.
In fulfilling childhood fantasies and Tarzan complexes, Tree Tents
also manage to look like space age survival pods. The spherical design
has a two-fold purpose: to provide even load distribution for the
suspension system and allow for natural rain runoff. Steam-bent green
ash and aluminum provide eye-catching shape and structural integrity
when suspended in the canopy.
Skógafoss is a waterfall situated in the south of Iceland at the cliffs
of the former coastline. After the coastline had receded seaward (it is
now at a distance of about 5 kilometres (3.1 miles) from Skógar), the
former sea cliffs remained, parallel to the coast over hundreds of
kilometres, creating together with some mountains a clear border between
the coastal lowlands and the Highlands of Iceland. 10 more images after the break...

Top 10 Countries That Disappeared In The 20th Century

New nations seem to pop up with alarming regularity. At the start of the
20th century, there were only a few dozen independent sovereign states
on the planet; today, there are nearly 200! Once a nation is
established, they tend to stick around for awhile, so a nation
disappearing is quite uncommon. It’s only occurred a handful of times in
the last century. But when they do, they completely vanish off the face
of the globe: government, flag, and all. Here then, in no particular
order, are the top ten countries that had their moment in the sun but
are, alas, no more.

Created from the Soviet controlled sector of Germany after the Second
World War, East Germany was probably best known for its Wall and its
tendency to shoot people who attempted to cross over it. Now, it’s one
(over-reactionary) thing to shoot foreigners who are trying to enter
your country illegally, but these were its own people!

Basically little more than a Soviet satellite state, the collapse of the
notorious Wall and, with it, the demise of the old Soviet Union brought
an end to this failed experiment in Communism, and it was integrated
back into the rest of Germany in 1990. Because East Germany was so far
behind the rest of Germany economically, however, its reintegration with
the west almost bankrupted Germany. Today, however, things are swimming
along nicely, thank you. 09 more countries after the break...

Typhoon Bopha, an
incredibly powerful typhoon, has killed hundreds, triggered landslides
and floods and left immeasurable destruction in its path in the
Philippines. The death toll stands at over 500 – entire families washed
away – many still missing. At least 200 of the victims died in
Compostela Valley alone. A muddy wasteland of collapsed houses and
trees felled by ferocious winds; 300,000 left homeless in great need of
water, food and shelter. – Paula Nelson ( 38 photos total)

Protestors once again
have massed in Egypt's Tahrir Square and around the country in
opposition to their ruling leader. Yesterday a crowd of more than
200,000 gathered in growing opposition to President Mohamed Morsi's
decree last Friday that granted him sweeping constitutional powers.
Tahrir Square became the epicenter of the protests in early 2011 that

China but once a decade. The 18th Party Congress concluded with the
ascension of Xi Jinping to the top leadership posts. The meeting in
the Great Hall of the People in Beijing's Tiananmen Square drew
delegates to formalize the power transfer and led citizens to wait for
news. Pictured here are scenes from inside the gathering, and from

Over the past few
days, United States veterans who have served in the armed forces were
honored during Veterans Day events. It coincided with other countries
marking Armistice Day or Remembrance day (Poppy Day), when in the 11th
hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, the armistice between the allied
nations and Germany in 1918 effectively ended World War I. -- Lloyd Young ( 37 photos total)

The people of the
United States spoke with their votes yesterday in local, state, and
national races and on numerous ballot questions. President Obama was
reelected after a hard-fought campaign with challenger Mitt Romney, and
the Republicans and Democrats remained in control of their respective
majorities in the House of Representatives and Senate. Here's a look at
the voting process throughout Tuesday and into the early morning hours
Wednesday of the celebrations and disappointment as the results came in.

In a conflict
dragging on into its twentieth violent month, today was an especially
deadly day in Syria, where rebels are fighting the government of Bashar
al-Assad. A pair of car bombs exploded, one in Hama and one in
Damascus, and both sides claimed wildly different casualty totals.
Intense shelling of rebel positions served as counterpoint. But even an
especially deadly day here makes it just one of many in the conflict
that has claimed as many as 35,000 victims since it began with street
protests on March 15, 2011. Over a quarter of a million refugees have
fled to Syria's neighbors, and the UN puts the number of internally
displaced at over a million. Gathered here are images from the last
month in the Mediterranean country of 22 million. -- Lane Turner (37 photos total)

Matters of the
economy are forefront in many minds, with economic issues dominating the
recent American election and the leadership change in China. But in
several countries in Europe, economic debate is played out on the
streets with protests, petrol bombs, and strikes. As the Eurozone
struggles with the global financial crisis, many member countries have
turned to a series of spending cuts to health, education, and other
services and social programs. Widespread protests against these
so-called austerity measures have erupted in several countries.
Gathered here are photographs from the most heavily impacted nations in

Cambodians this week
mourned King Norodom Sihanouk, who died in China while seeking medical
treatment since January. The 89-year-old former monarch held many roles
in government and was king on more than one occasion, starting in 1941.
He gave up the throne to his son, Norodom Sihamoni, in 2004. Sihanouk
led the country through its independence from France in 1953 and was
connected to much turmoil in the country over the last 50 years. A crowd
estimated at 200,000 lined the streets in Phnom Penh today to welcome
home the body, which will lie in state for three months before being
cremated according to Buddhist ritual. -- Lloyd Young ( 29 photos total)

The pursuit of gold
medals has athletes and fans focused on the Olympic games in London, but
the pursuit of gold is a worldwide obsession that extends far beyond
the realm of sport. Investors and speculators drove the price of gold
to dizzying heights a year ago as they sought refuge from volatile
markets. Seeking gain in an uncertain recession, millions of people
trade old jewelry as cash-for-gold businesses flourish. Throughout the
ups and downs, gold extraction continues far from the glory of sports
and the frenzy of markets. Gold is dredged, mined, and panned in
operations large and small, often at great risk to miners. Processing
gold with cyanide and other chemicals involves dangerous environmental
hazards. What results is undeniably beautiful. Gathered here are
images of people extracting, processing, refining, buying, selling,
celebrating… all of them going for gold. -- Lane Turner (36 photos total)

become one of the hottest destinations for billions of dollars of mining
investment.
