2010 NFL Draft Prospect, Miami Defensive End, Allen Bailey has physical skills that scouts know are there even though they may not show up on the stat sheets. Held to only one tackle in the opening game against Florida A&M, he has a chance to shine in front of NFL Scouts at this weeks game against Ohio State.

ESPN’s Desmond Howard says that scouts want to see a more of a consistent impact.

“They talk about how Bailey can dominate, but until you do it against Ohio State or Pittsburgh, it’s just talk.”

Big Season Debut for Leonard Hankerson

2011 NFL Draft Prospect, Miami Wide Receiver Leonard Hankerson had a solid night to open the 2010 college football season. Choosing to not enter the 2010 NFL Draft, Hankerson wasted no time making a statement with his six catches for 115 yards and two TDs.

Granted, the competition will get tougher than Florida A&M, but Hankerson is off to a good start to lead the Hurricanes in Receiving again this year.

Ras-I Dowling Gets Character Endorsement

2011 NFL Draft Prospect, Virginia Cornerback, Ras-I Dowling has a step up already on many NFL Draft prospects in one department. He was given a ringing endorsement by Cavaliers Defensive Coordinator, Jim Reid.

“As a father and a dad, this is who you get down on your knees and pray that your daughter brings home some day. That is the type of character that he is. You would be so proud to call Ras-I Dowling your son.”

Alabama RB Mark Ingram to Miss Season Opener

2011 NFL Draft Prospect, Alabama Running Back, Mark Ingram is set to miss the Tide’s season opener after having arthroscopic surgery on his knee. It isn’t known yet if he will return in time for Sept. 4th game against Penn State.

“Mark will definitely be out for this week’s game,” Saban said. “We will make every decision in the future based on what’s best for Mark and his career. This is not an injury that will affect Mark’s future ability to make a full recovery in a relatively short time frame.”

South Carolina TE, Weslye Saunders Out of Season Opener

2011 NFL Draft Prospect, South Carolina Tight End, Weslye Saunders is out of the Gamecocks season opener Thursday night against Southern Miss. Saunders has been suspended for violating team rules and is under investigation by the NCAA on another matter. Coach Steve Spurrier made a short, but interesting comment on the matter that may cause some speculation…

“He’s not on the team. He won’t play Thursday,” Spurrier said.

He’s not on the team? We will have to keep an ear out if there is more to the first part of that comment than the second part.

Can Jerrod Johnson be an NFL QB?

Texas A&M Quarterback, Jerrod Johnson, may have a long way to go to convince NFL Scouts that he can be an NFL QB come Draft day. While his size (6’4″-243)and numbers (2009-3,579 yards, 30 TD and eight INT) shout NFL Quarterback, mechanics remain an issue for the converted Wide Receiver.

“He looks good one minute and bad the next minute, but when he looks good, I still cringe when he throws the ball,” a longtime NFL scout said. “Johnson reminds me of two players — Vince Young and Tim Tebow. He has the athleticism and body of Young, although he’s not as elusive as Young was at Texas. He also has the same low delivery and erratic arm angle that Young possesses. As far as Tebow, I have the same question mark about Johnson as I had with him. Can he correct his throwing motion, and if he does, will muscle memory play a part in him reverting back to his old release?”

Although he says he is not distracted by the agent “mess” in North Carolina right now, we know that cannot be 100% true. Quinn did a good job deflecting questions regarding the investigation into teammates and working it back around to the Tar Heals upcoming season during ACC Football kickoff interviews on Sunday…

“We’re just really looking forward to starting training camp and getting back into that football mindset,” said Quinn, a Fort Dorchester High School graduate. “Just grinding together as one brotherhood and just really looking forward to the season.”

In these days of Social Media the kids are putting even more targets of accessibility on themselves. Quinn has witnessed that as well…

“They try to contact me on Facebook,” he said, “but I really don’t pay attention to it.”

He runs with excellent body lean, gets his shoulders down to make himself a smaller target, runs through contact and gains yardage after contact. He will get downgraded by some personnel men because of his lack of elite speed, but we view him as an Emmitt Smith-like back with enough quickness and speed to be an elite NFL back.”
