Hundreds of friends and supporters turned out to cheer on the teams, raise money for charity and join the fun at the NFYFC competitions weekend on 9 and 10 October.

Chairwoman Helen Roberts and a team of members of the national council worked hard during the Saturday taking it in turns to cycle the equivalent of the distance from the NFYFC office in Stoneleigh to the Wales YFC office in Builth Wells, Wales – a 172k journey to raise cash for Helen’s chosen charity for the year, Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI).

The team also sold raffle tickets for a chance to win a brand new bike or tickets to the 2011 annual convention in Blackpool to boost the fundraising total further. The raffle will be drawn at the NFYFC race day at Cheltenham on 14 November.

Helen has challenged Young Farmers’ Clubs across England and Wales to raise £100,000 for the charity during her year in office to celebrate its 150th anniversary.

The weekend also saw the launch of the new NFYFC youth forum, which met for the first time to discuss its priorities for the future and ideas of how under 18s can have more of a say in the way the organisation is run.

The group is made up of last year’s Junior YFC Member of the Year Aled Jones and runner-up Amy Scott, plus eight finalists from this year’s competition. Aled, who came up with the idea of a national forum, led the first meeting which covered topics such as communication, recruitment and retention, drawing up a manifesto, and launching a competition to create a mascot that will act as a link between grassroots members and NFYFC.

NFYFC partners Diageo, and three actors from Collingwood Learning, put on a gritty production called Smashed throughout the day highlighting the effects and consequences of alcohol abuse, which was well received.

Helen Roberts, who made the presentations to the winners along with national president Lionel Hill, said: “It was great to see so many members competing over the weekend. There was really tough completion for the fencing final, and all the public speaking competitors were incredibly smartly dressed and keen to do well. The folk dancing was fantastic and went down really well with the audience, drawing a good crowd – congratulations to all those that won.

“I am delighted that the NFYFC youth forum met for the first time – one of my goals for my year in office was to increase opportunities for members under 18 to influence the decision-making of NFYFC . All the members of the new forum were very enthusiastic and came up with lots of ideas on how to take it forward.  Hopefully the forum will go from strength to strength.

“The cycling challenge was great fun and very popular with members, many of whom bought tickets for the raffle to help take us closer to our fundraising target.

“Well done everyone who took part and thanks to everyone for joining us to make the weekend great,” she added.

<div>Hundreds of friends and supporters turned out to cheer on the teams, raise money for charity and join the fun at the NFYFC competitions weekend on 9 and 10 October.</div>
<div>&#160;</div>
<div>Chairwoman Helen Roberts and a team of members of the national council worked hard during the Saturday taking it in turns to cycle the equivalent of the distance from the NFYFC office in Stoneleigh to the Wales YFC office in Builth Wells, Wales – a 172k journey to raise cash for Helen’s chosen charity for the year, Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI).</div>
<div>&#160;</div>
<div>The team also sold raffle tickets for a chance to win a brand new bike or tickets to the 2011 annual convention in Blackpool to boost the fundraising total further. The raffle will be drawn at the NFYFC race day at Cheltenham on 14 November.</div>
<div>&#160;</div>
<div>Helen has challenged Young Farmers’ Clubs across England and Wales to raise £100,000 for the charity during her year in office to celebrate its 150th anniversary.</div>
<div>&#160;</div>
<div>The weekend also saw the launch of the new NFYFC youth forum, which met for the first time to discuss its priorities for the future and ideas of how under 18s can have more of a say in the way the organisation is run.</div>
<div>&#160;</div>
<div>The group is made up of last year’s Junior YFC Member of the Year Aled Jones and runner-up Amy Scott, plus eight finalists from this year’s competition. Aled, who came up with the idea of a national forum, led the first meeting which covered topics such as communication, recruitment and retention, drawing up a manifesto, and launching a competition to create a mascot that will act as a link between grassroots members and NFYFC.</div>
<div>&#160;</div>
<div>NFYFC partners Diageo, and three actors from Collingwood Learning, put on a gritty production called Smashed throughout the day highlighting the effects and consequences of alcohol abuse, which was well received.</div>
<div>&#160;</div>
<div>Helen Roberts, who made the presentations to the winners along with national president Lionel Hill, said: “It was great to see so many members competing over the weekend. There was really tough completion for the fencing final, and all the public speaking competitors were incredibly smartly dressed and keen to do well. The folk dancing was fantastic and went down really well with the audience, drawing a good crowd – congratulations to all those that won.</div>
<div>&#160;</div>
<div>“I am delighted that the NFYFC youth forum met for the first time – one of my goals for my year in office was to increase opportunities for members under 18 to influence the decision-making of NFYFC . All the members of the new forum were very enthusiastic and came up with lots of ideas on how to take it forward.&#160; Hopefully the forum will go from strength to strength.</div>
<div>&#160;</div>
<div>“The cycling challenge was great fun and very popular with members, many of whom bought tickets for the raffle to help take us closer to our fundraising target.</div>
<div>&#160;</div>
<div>“Well done everyone who took part and thanks to everyone for joining us to make the weekend great,” she added.</div>

  <title>Cast your votes for Countryfile's Matt Baker</title>
<description>County Durham organising secretary and proud mum Janice Baker is calling on Young Farmers' Clubs members to show their support for her son, Countryfile's Matt Baker, as he takes to the dancefloor in BBC's Strictly Come Dancing.
The BAFTA award-winning presenter has temporarily swapped his Countryfile wellies for a pair of dancing shoes to compete alongside professional dancer Aliona Vilani. The pair are hard at work rehearsing for this weekend's show and Janice is calling on YFC members to return the support Matt has shown YFC by voting for the pair.
"This was a late call for Matt and his diary was already full with Countryfile and the One Show and he was due to go to the Commonwealth Games.
"But I have always loved the show and he told them he didn't dare refuse as his mum would kill him!" Janice jokes.
"He is absolutely loving it. Because he trained as a gymnast, that has stood him in good stead for this training and taking instruction," Janice adds. "He is a big supporter of YFC and has judged various competitions, it would be great if Young Farmers' Clubs members would support him when voting starts this weekend."
Tomorrow night the dancers have to impress the judges with either a foxtrot or a salsa.

Electoral reform and youth in democracy: Proposed reforms, votes at 16
Youth participation in the Big Society: In the community, in the council, in the boardroom
The impact of spending cuts on young people: Youth services, higher education.

  <title>Competitions weekend - disco cancelled</title>
<description>Please note: The disco dance planned for Saturday night has had to be cancelled

NFYFC is gearing up for a weekend of fun and friendly rivalry during its competitions weekend at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, on 9-10 October.
Come along and cheer on the YFC teams who will be taking part in the junior farm safety, senior debating, intermediate brainstrust, rural apprentice, fence erecting, junior speaking, junior member of the year, folk dancing, metalwork, county exhibit, hockey, badminton and volleyball competitions over the course of the two-day event.
There will be a chance to learn more about this year's travel opportunities with the Discovery programme; NFYFC's new youth forum will meet for the first time and there will be entertainment including a Diageo drama production.
NFYFC council officers will be doing their bit to raise money for chairwoman Helen Roberts' chosen charity RABI with a sponsored stationary bike ride.
Tickets for a raffle in aid of the charity, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, will also be on sale with a chance to win some fantastic prizes and help Helen meet her target of raising £150 per YFC in the federation during her year in office.

<title>NFYFC cookery and floral art competition winners from the Malvern Show</title>
<description>This year’s Malvern Autumn Show, billed as a celebration of nature’s harvest for food and gardening lovers alike, proved yet again to be the perfect venue for the NFYFC cookery, floral art and County Exhibit competitions finals, as well as a great day out for YFC members, friends and supporters.
The second year at this venue saw the NFYFC finals housed in a much busier hall with comperes on both days making sure visitors to the show were kept informed of the aims and successes of these showcase competitions finals.
YFC members from clubs across England and Wales demonstrated their culinary and artistic skills this year to create mouthwatering dishes and stunning flower arrangements on the theme My Home County.
NFYFC operations manager James Eckley said: "The standard of workmanship and skills demonstrated in all three competitions were once again incredible. Each year YFC members continue to raise the bar, so well done to everyone who took part; to the winners of these hard-fought categrories; and many thanks to our hosts in Malvern for the wonderful venue and their support, including free tickets."

<title>Five-year farm business tenancy to let through the National Trust</title>
<description>The National Trust is looking to let Ossams Hill Farm, an organic upland farm in the Peak District National Park. The farm includes a detached four-bedroom farmhouse and a range of traditional and modern buildings. There is scope for sensitive diversification.
The Trust sees this as a potential opportunity for a new entrant to take on their first holding having gained prior agricultural experience through employment and study.
The viewing day will be held on 14 October 2010 by appointment only.

<title>Grand turnout for tug-of-war and ATV safety and handling competitions</title>
<description>

The Royal County of Berkshire Show proved to be a popular new home for the NFYFC tug-of-war and ATV safety and handling competitions on 18 and 19 September.
The always hugely popular tug-of-war competition attracted even bigger crowds than at its former home at the Royal Show showcasing YFCs' favourite challenge to the general public and the many YFC members and supporters who also turned out to cheer on the teams taking part in both events this time around.
Staffordshire YFC took home the men's tug-of-war crown and Derbyshire YFC triumphed in the women's competition.
Herefordshire YFC took first place in the ATV safety and handling competition with Cornwall in second place and Radnorshire third.
Photos of the winners will be posted here and in the photo gallery as soon as they are available.
