A key artist in Singapore representing the second generation Singapore Art.
His works are collected by Singapore Art Museum and Singapore History Museum.

24"x20" Oil on Canvas SGD8,000	Born in 1938 and graduated from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Art. Since then he has undertaken his exploration in the art world for over fifty years. Known for his unique artistic style and excellent painting techniques, today he is one of the outstanding and highly collected artists in Singapore.In the 70s, Koeh was an art editor working for children Art Magazine, a part of the Xinzhou Newspaper's weekend issue.During the 80s, as a specially appointed graphic artist of Nanyang Business Newspaper, he produced a large number of political cartoons, magazine covers and illustrations. In addition, he was also engaged in exhibitions and events. He had successfully held many solo and group exhibitions and published two catalogues "Koeh Sia Yong Cartoons" and "Koeh Sia Yong's Paintings".
Koeh's oil paintings are diverse in subject matters. The realistic and expressive approaches are two major characteristics of his work. Many of his figure paintings describe the indigenous conditions and customs of Bali Island, Indonesia. His brushes capture the wavy figures of Bali women. Rich and intensive colors presented the touching scene of Bali ladies' singing and dancing as well as their traditional costumes and hair decorations.Koeh's landscape paintings usually depict scenes of the Singapore River, old streets, temples and volcanoes etc. Through the bold and unrestrained brush strokes, the artist not only represented objects realistically, but also expressed his inner feelings as well.	32"x24" Oil on Canvas SGD8,000

Koeh has mastered good techniques in the application of color and light. Contrasting colors such as yellow and purple, red and green, blue and orange, appeared often in his works. By employing complementary colors to coincide with these bright colors, the artist created a vibrant, gorgeous and yet refined visual effect in his oil paintings.During the creation process, Koeh always spends time in observing and producing the subtle changes of color tones, light and shades. And through his thorough study, his finishing touches help bring the works to life. For example, in one of his works, the artist applied a slight tone of red on the black surfaces, which perfectly pictured the Indonesian young girl's dark brown skin under the sunlight.	In Koeh's landscape painting, various treatments can be observed. He likes to use bold, heavy and dark outlines to depict Singapore old street scenes while using thinner, lighter and more vivid colors to reflect the spirit of modern Singapore.

Painting Design Concepts and Composition Tips

Viewpoints – Changing viewpoints is one way that I love. It naturally alters my dead and formulated thinking. Different viewpoints : Look up, look down, look behind, look closer, look further

Creating a problem - I try to create a problem in each painting composition I work on. This enriches my visual dictionary progressively. Once a while, I like to work on a large painting and create a large problem. It is a good benchmarking method to measure my progress.

Changing tonal keys or dominant colors. Generally, I find tonal structures and dominant colors determine the mood of a painting. Keying in brighter or darker with different color dominant could complete alter the character of a painting.
Doing the opposite – I believe this is the most powerful method to improve one’s design ability. Staying with pre-defined formulae or rules stops me from exploring.

Taking risk doing the opposite things best describes what ‘composition’ is all about. I like to elaborate my points with examples below.

E.g.

I like to paint large and loose paintings; I force myself once a while to paint small 8”X8” still life for the whole day. I have stay focus on the subject and learn to observe carefully. I always see things that I have never seen before.

Most plein air painters like to work only they see nice the light and shadows patterns. I once worked on location when the rain was pouring, that truly expands my colors and approaches in watercolor.

I like complex subject matters. So sometimes, I force myself to paint a simple single object still life.

Try out many more opposite things against your preferred and you will truly enjoy the risking taking journey.

In his first solo exhibition in Singapore, Cao Jingping will feature 15 of his recent works. Most of Cao Jingping’s paintings consist of three elements, namely the butterflies as a reference to the cycle of life and metamorphosis, the water as a basis of all life and the understated rusty chain as the destructive force of life.
Cao Jingping’s vibrant colours, composition and fine technique give the impression the butterflies ready to take off from the canvas at any given moment. The scale of the insects is amplified so that what was once overlooked is now impossible to ignore. Certain patches of colour on the butterfly wings are crisp and clear, whereas others are blurry like memories. Though it looks formally beautiful, with its thick brushwork and subtle mastery of colour, the underlying themes are that of helplessness and loss.

Transparent Watercolour -- How did J.M.W Turner keep that?

Transparent watercolour like British Watercolour.

Learn it from old English masters; Thomas Girtin, J. M. W. Turner and John Sell Cotman.

When I learnt watercolour from instruction book, almost watercolour painters would advise us not to paint more layers. The most is 3 layers.

However, when I looked at these British watercolourists above, they did a lot more than that and still could keep watercolour transparent and fresh. I solved my doubt with 2 pieces of information; one from Singapore master watercolour artist Mr. Gog Sing Hooi (He was the late president and founding member of Singapore Watercolour Society) and the other from my Chemistry and Physics knowledge.

Mr. Gog said to me "To stay transparent, keep on using similar colors."

Brown goes onto similar brown => more transparent
Blue goes onto similar blues => more transparent

I undertood that rule better after I was trained in a house paint company research lab.

1. Each paint type has it own particle distribution. Mixing them causing more light scattering. => less light goes to viewer's eyes . => dull (could be less transparent too)
2. Some pigment may react with other pigment in aqueous form causing coarse percipitation.=> losing transparency with coarser and more irregular particle sizes.

So in order to stay transparent, each layer better choose similar pigment type. Turner could paint 30 layers and still kept the transparency of watercolour. The painting also carries very strong tonal structure. It is a wonderful way to paint architectural elements slowly.

Watercolour Painting Preservation

There are 2 major groups of attack to watercolour paintings:

Acidic moisture bleaching the painting surface or acidic moisture penetrating through the back surface attacking the paper which causes yellow spots appearing on the paper.

UV light bleaching the paper.

For case 2 it is easier. Just keep away from direct UV or direct sunshine. There is anti-UV glass which more advanced frame shop can provide. The rule is : Strong lighting is always harmful to both oil or watercolour. The UV light and heat and 2 energy source that could accelarate any chemical reactions.

Case 1 is a more common headache to all collectors. My rule is : Change the painting environmental condition.

I learnt this from corrosion engineering idea in school. In corrosion engineering, it is called sacrificial anode. Since corrosion always happens, we provide a material for it to corrode. Therefore, the original object like a big ship in the sea will not corrode.

So these are the steps:

First make sure the frame environment is dry before fitting in the painting

Next prepare all protective layers that change the whole environment against acid moisture.

Get a larger piece of acid free watercolor paper

Gesso it with oil paint acrylic ground

let it dry for at least a day

Use this protective layer and place behind the watercolour painting

Matting should be acid free museum grade if possible. Alternatively, regular grade mats can be coated with transparent gesso at the back. That makes it similar to acid free mats.

Ensure everything is dry, then seal the frame tightly. Minimize regular adhesive in contact with painting paper.

The sacrificial piece of watercolor painting can last 3 years. Mats should last about the same length of time. So, change them after every 3 years.

**Wooden backing is one of the major source of acid moisture. Gesso it can block certain level of its acidity.

** Acrylic Gesso has some alkaline content in it. Ammonia is one of the common content. That neutralizes acids.

If you have watercolour paintings that are already having problems, some fine art restorers can help reduce the problem. Eliminating it might not be possible.
