Times are tough and more people are turning to payday loans. Unemployment is hitting the highest levels they've been at since the 70s. Many people are losing their careers, wondering what they should do next, and whether they should get payday loans. Some industries have the best careers that are actually somewhat recession proof, even in the troubled state the economy is in. Health care and higher education typically are the careers that don't have to lay off mass amounts of people during recessions. My brother-in-law is doing one in the UK. He is doing classes, as he finds that it gives him valuable contacts and the ability to network with people that would otherwise be difficult to meet or connect with. The lecturors are also an inspiration to him and they get in ultra successful entrepeneurs and business leaders to speak which is far better than reading premeditated academic notes.try these links for online education information.

I am a Connexions School PA in Lambeth and the school I work in has recently bought the licence for fast tomato. Do you have any suggestions on how to use it effectively with year 8 students? Also, are there any useful resources for year 10 students for group work in order to help them decide what to do after year 11?

During my involvement for Semta n the past on the IAG project with other Sector Skills Councils, we provided copies of our sector information from the Sector Skills Agreements for use on the NGRF website. At the time, the project allowed time and payment for Warwick to summarise the documents and use the information to populate various sections of the website for advisers. Since this project, a number of other reports have been produced by Semta for the sectors of Bioscience, Marine, Metals / Electrical and Mechanical equipment sectors as well as a Labour Market Survey for the Engineering sector. Whilst we would not be able to summarise the information, if the documents would be useful, please feel free to use the relevant links to this page.

I am a guidance practitioner working for Connexions Kent and Medway and have been asked by a local school to support their Careers in Science week. The aim of the week is to encourage pupils to think about the different career options related to science. I am looking to put together a ‘fact sheet’ highlighting some of the careers available, future trends, rewards, availability within the sector etc. The LMI section of this website will of course help me to do this but I wondered if anyone could point me in the direction of any additional resources which may be available? Thanks

Vocational Education needs LMI but it would be a shame to totally kill education for its own sake

I feel that there will always be a value in people undertaking learning for its own sake/for personal development. Probably most people will be interested in undertaking a learning pathway that leads to employment. LMI will be a vital context for all of those. But suspicion is probably healthy if it protects those for whom education might provide a less obvious route to a fulfilling future.

Labour Market Intelligence is IAG's 'Added value'?

As is often the case, it is often useful to reflect on what you are doing, and recognise that there is a label for it. Nowadays the Labour Market is so vast (globalisation) and rapidly moving that there is a need (I suspect) for a resource like this to help IAG Practitioners gather their Intelligence in a more systematic way.

We have recently started year 8 group interviews around fast tomato with our connexions adviser (six boys in a group) - we get through the whole cohort by Christmas and then move onto year 9 in time for options. The year 8s enjoy the personal discussion linked to a personality questionnaire conducted first around personality fit to job. We introduce fast tomato which is customised with all the school exams from year 7. We are also about to do business dynamics activity days with years 8 and 9 linking these to the Realgame and Berealgame that we do with the respective year groups. We will continue to develop CEG in years 7 and 8 so that the boys increase their world of work awareness well before they need to take decisions

Tony Watts and Robert Sultana have recently published 'Comparative Analyses: Career guidance in the Mediterranean region'. It is the latest in a series of international policy reviews stemming from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) review.

It is the latest in a series of international policy reviews stemming from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) review.
[ Weblog entry in "Guidance Community Discussion Space"]

Education and training have been identified as one of the key instruments for the promotion of social stability and economic prosperity in the Mediterranean region in a number of policy documents and bilateral cooperation programmes under the Barcelona Process. Among other measures to support this process, a special regional MEDA programme – Education and Training for Employment (MEDA-ETE) – was launched by the European Commission (EuropeAid Cooperation Office), and is being implemented by the European Training Foundation (ETF) between 2005 and 2008. This project aims to support 10 Mediterranean Partners – Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, and the West Bank and Gaza Strip – in the design of relevant education and training policies that can contribute to promote employment through a regional approach.

When the MEDA-ETE project was designed, many of the 10 Mediterranean Partners expressed the interest and need to better understand the career guidance services in the region and to identify existing good policies and practices both in and outside the European Union. As a result, in 2006, a specific component of the project was dedicated to career guidance in the Mediterranean region. It has generated a number of outputs, such as country and cross-country analyses of career guidance policies as well as the establishment of a regional network of policy-makers in career guidance, supported by a virtual community/discussion forum on guidance.

The analysis was built upon previous experience with career guidance reviews of the OECD, the European Commission (Directorate-General for Education and Culture), Cedefop, ETF and the World Bank, and developed further the research methodology by paying particular attention to the socio-economic and cultural context of the Mediterranean region and its impact and limitations on career guidance services.

Also attached is another recent report from Tony Watts, titled 'Career Services: A Review in an International Perspective'. This paper reviews the all age careers service in New Zealand and details the five main challenges facing the development of the service.
