Just received my latest statement from Trevillion giving details of those images I’ve sold for book covers over the last quarter.   One of them was a photograph I took 4 years ago in Ringland, Norfolk.  I took the photograph early one November morning of the River Wensum  when it flooded Ringland Common.  This one has sold quite a few times but I think that this is the widest circulation sale for it so far (covers  a large print run for the whole of the USA and UK by the look of it.)

Last Sunday it was my pleasure to meet up with Himani and Shaun to do their pre-wedding shoot. They had decided that they would like to have their lifestyle photoshoot at Gorleston, nor far from where Shaun’s parents live. Shaun told me that he used to spend a lot of his (probably mispent) youth around the Gorleston esplanade. Himani and Shaun live in London and were up in Norfolk for the Easter weekend – and we all know what Bank Holiday Weekend weather is like, don’t we? And we weren’t diappointed – the light was as flat as a pancake!.

But we made the best of it and really enjoyed our walk around sea-front at Gorleston, amusing the Easter holidaymakers!

Himani and Shaun are a great couple and their wedding is in a few weeks time, spread over 2 days, with both Roman Catholic and Indian ceremonies. I’m really looking forward to it.

Here are a few of my favourites from the pre-wedding shoot. I hope you enjoy them.

Pre-wedding or engagement shoots are a great way to get to know your wedding photographer before your wedding day.  It’s also an opportunity for your photographer to get a feeling for how comfortable you are in front of the camera – which really helps when it comes to the big day.   Pre-wedding shoots are something I include in all my full-day coverage packages and are available as an optional extra in my other packages.  If you are at all nervous or apprehensive about having your photograph taken I can wholeheartedly recommend them.

They are a primarily a “walk and talk”, getting to know each other better, while I take some very informal and fun pictures of the two of you.  They are very much a lifestyle shoot, so they can be done on the coast (Norfolk has some fantastic beach locations – Wells, Holkham, Hunstanton for example), at your wedding venue or maybe at a favourite location of yours.

For my first outing of 2012 I was off up to Sussex Barn in Burnham Market in North Norfolk to cover the winter wedding of a really lovely couple, Jennifer and Mark.  Jennifer and Mark run their own company,  Free Wheeler Campers, hiring out VW camper vans that they have bespoke converted, all based on their own love of camper van holidays. I’d done Jennifer and Mark’s pre-wedding shoot at Holkham Beach, Norfolk back last October when we’d been very fortunate with the weather.  It would have been asking a lot to hope that the weather would be as kind for their wedding.  Unfortunately, there was an icy wind blowing down from the north coast followed by some equally icy rain!

The day started with me meeting up with Mark and his relatives at one of the holiday cottages for a welcome cup of coffee before I went up to Lavender cottage where Jennifer was staying, to get some pictures of her preparations (Jen’s hair was done by Jane of Corner House Salon) and to meet her Mum, Mary, and her bridesmaids – sister, Sally, and nieces, Rhiannon and Meredith.  From there it was back to Sussex Barn to catch up with Mark and his groom’s party and to get some photographs of the guests being piped into the barn by a very wet piper Richard , who was in full regalia.

As most Norfolk wedding photographers who have covered weddings at Sussex Barn will tell you – the large hall is pretty dark – especially on a rainy winter’s afternoon.  But Jennifer had asked the team at Sussex Barn to make sure there were lots of candles in the hall – so it was extremely atmospheric (by the way – that’s a photographer’s euphemism for “dark”).

During the ceremony, we were treated to some absolutely beautiful singing from Sally Taylor – an extremely talented local singer from Norwich.

After the ceremony everyone gathered in the small hall for drinks and canapés while the large hall was set up for the reception.

Now, the weather so close to the North Norfolk coast can change very quickly and about an hour before sunset the clouds disappeared and we were treated to some beautiful winter sunshine – just in time for me to get some photographs of Jennifer and Mark together around Sussex Barn – but it was still ?***!&*! cold.  It was great that Jennifer and Mark were up for a stroll around the  grounds to get the photographs in the cold – with Jennifer sporting her bride’s wellies!

Reflecting Jennifer and Mark’s lover of  Europe through their own camper van holidays and Mark’s family connections, the dessert served at the end of the reception was Apple Strudel  - prepared by Tristram and his team from Julie Abbs Catering, the caterers for the day.  Mind you, some of the ‘strudel-carving’ I witnessed was more akin to butchery!

After the wedding breakfast was finished, Jennifer and Mark’s first dance was a very impressive Viennese Waltz, followed by a ceilidh orchestrated by the Fezziwig Ceilidh Band and a disco into the early hours.

Last week I had the great pleasure of shooting Clare & Lorna’s pre-wedding pictures at the beautiful village of Rougham in Norfolk.  Clare and Lorna are celebrating their civil partnership in September and wanted their shoot to be done in an around Clare’s home village.  I also had the opportunity to meet Clare’s mum and Homer, her beautiful ginger tom cat (named after the classical writer of the Iliad and the Odyssey – not the chap with yellow skin!)

We started the shoot in the old brick kiln woods in the village which have been in Clare’s family for many years.  I understand from Clare’s mum that the bricks used to build the houses in the village were made in these old kilns.  The old clay pits, settling beds and kilns are still visible.

It was a very cold day but that came with one major advantage – we didn’t get muddy because the ground was frozen!  I must remember to take my gloves the next time I do a pre-wedding shoot in February!

Later in the shoot we took some pictures outside the Grade 2* listed dovecote which apparently used to hold 999 pigeons.  The reason for 999 and not 1000 – surprise, surprise – the taxman.  If you kept more than 999 pigeons the tax went up!

It was a pleasure to take Clare and Lorna’s pictures that cold morning and I look forward to photographing their civil partnership later this year.  A full gallery of their photographs can be found on my online gallery system.

For my last wedding of 2011 I was off down to South Farm near Royston, Cambridgeshire to photograph the wedding of Lindsay and Chris.  I’d shot their pre-wedding photographs at South Farm during the early summer in beautiful weather.  Last Saturday it wasn’t quite as warm and it was a lot windier!  However, we were fortunate with the weather given it was November.

Lindsay and Chris are a great couple who came all the way up from Brighton for their wedding and I really enjoyed the day with them and all their family and friends.  South Farm is a great venue for a wedding and everyone had a relaxed and hugely enjoyable time.

Even though it was a bit windy, we managed to get away from the wedding party to get some great images of Lindsay and Chris on their own.  From past experience of their pre-wedding shoot, getting Chris to do a straight pose for more than 10 seconds is almost impossible!

Lindsay and Chris – my best wishes to you both for the future.

Jennifer and Mark are getting married next February at Sussex Barn, and last week we met up at Holkham Beach to shoot some pre-wedding photographs.  They are a great couple and turned up in their large, bespoke converted camper van.  Jen and Mark run their own company Free Wheeler Campers hiring out their converted VW camper vans for European holidays – an idea that came from their own experiences of taking camper vans around Europe.

Anyway – we were very lucky with the weather, as Holkham is one place you don’t want to get caught if it rains!  We had some beautiful sunshine, which considering it was October was a really pleasant surprise.

We got some great pictures and I am really looking forward to their wedding next February.

A relatively local wedding for me last Saturday.  Georgina & Dan were married at St Margaret’s Church at Lyng followed by a reception at the Memorial Hall in Binham.  Georgina looked stunning in her wedding gown and we got some great shots around Binham Priory, particularly as we were blessed by some welcome late afternoon sun and a gorgeous sunset.  Georgina is a florist and her bouquet and flowers at their reception venue were beautiful. Georgina is a fan of retro-styled images, so I’ve processed quite a few of their photographs to have a vintage feel to them.  My best wishes to them both for the future.

Last week I shot my first wedding at Cley Windmill – that of a lovely couple, Andrea and Neil.  Now I’m not sure, but Cley Windmill must be one of the smallest, if not actually the smallest, venues licensed for civil ceremonies in the UK.  It is a beautiful and really different location for a small and intimate wedding – situated as it is on the Cley Marshes in North Norfolk.  Although the day started with overcast skies and rain, as you can see from the pictures the sun broke through and we were treated to a typical Cley afternoon with stunning blue skies and fluffy white clouds.

I started by photographing Andrea’s preparations together with her two bridesmaids, Katrina and Jodie.  I then caught up with Neil and his best man, brother Ian, before moving into the lounge for the ceremony.  Being a mill, this room is circular and the guests sit in armchairs and sofas around the room! After the ceremony everyone moved outside into the garden area for drinks and canapés – by which time the skies had cleared and the sun had made it’s appearance.  We took this opportunity to get some shots of Andrea and Neil alone together. Andrea looked absolutely stunning in her dress and given the length and shape of the dress she made a fantastic job of negotiating the stairs when we went up onto the platform of the mill to get some shots of the her and Neil!

To avoid the climb again, Andrea threw her bouquet from the platform down to the waiting ladies – and I have to say that the young lady who made the jump and catch should have been in the England line-out at the Rugby World Cup!

Andrea and Neil – than you so much for allowing me to photograph your wedding – it was a lovely day.  My best wishes to you both for the future.

It was a new venue to me last week – Chaucer Barn for the wedding of Rachel and Tom.  Chaucer Barn has only recently opened for business as a wedding venue and what a beautiful one it is.  The weather was great, Rachel looked fantastic and Oliver and Luke (Rachel & Tom’s two young sons) looked the business in their suits. Everyone had a great day and it was a privilege to meet Rachel & Tom’s families and friends.
