Last Minute Baby Shower Gift

Like a typical Monday, I arrived at work, glanced at my calendar to review what's coming up this week when this one event popped out on my calendar....

A Coworker's Baby Shower!

Yikes! How could I have forgotten? I already donated to the group gift, but I have made something small for all the babies at work, so I had to find something!

I scoured the latest crochet newsletter from All Free Crochet and found the Pretty Barefoot Baby Sandal pattern from String with Style. The AFC newsletter claimed these could be made in 10 minutes. This was perfect since I not only had to have the gift done by Friday, but had plans every single night that week.

Did it take 10 minutes? I can't really be sure. I multi-tasked the whole time and barely had the flowers sewn on five minuets before the baby shower.

I paired the sandals with a co-ordinating Addison Headband and it was the perfect small gift. The sandals don't look like much, so I messaged the designer and asked if it would be ok to use her photo on the front of the card. She granted permission and the mom loved the little piggies peeking out the front!

Geeking Out Over Yarn Yoshi

Growing up in the 80s was the best! We are the first generation to experience the original Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and grow up in a world of visually appealing games! Imagine my excitement when Nintendo released the Wii U gaming system on my 30th birthday - November 18th, 2012. Suh-weet! Thank you for the birthday gift, Nintendo!

But, even more exciting are the rumors that began before the Wii U's release of a Yoshi game involving yarn. My husband knew that I would love the game and he's right! Here are a few print screens of the game play.

How will characters made of yarn interact differently with the world around them? Will the yarnish things be cute decorations or actually part of the game play?

All of these questions and more were answered at E3 yesterday. Holy sweetness...this game is probably going to be my favorite game ever! Knitters and Crocheters of the world alike will notice how amazingly intricate and precise the artwork is. I squealed as I watched the video explaining to my husband that I saw knit roads, amigurumi battling on the screen and the trees even looked like they were crocheted through the back loop only (my preferred way!).

For the love of yarn, please watch the 2014 E3 announcement trailer below. I promise you will wish that you were Yoshi. I mean, come on, who wouldn't love to kill bad guys and be rewarded with yarn?! This game will be epic!!!

How to Make Any Color of Animal Eyes

Supplies Needed:

Clear Animal Eyes

Nail Polish
Keep polish remover and a cotton ball nearby to clean accidents right away.

Difference between one thin layer of polish and multiple thin layers!

How to Paint the Eyes

Apply a thin, even layer of nail polish with brush strokes starting at the shaft and working toward the edge.
Allow it to dry completely
Repeat steps 1 & 2 until you achieve the desired depth of color as shown at right

Tips

Pre-soak the cotton ball with polish remover
Allow eyes to dry overnight before use
Don't have a huge polish stash? Buy the mini bottles. Mine were $.99 each!

The Velorum Scarf - Free Crochet Pattern

This scarf was 100% inspired by my recent scarf swap partner whose Ravelry ID contains the word astronomy and her color choices were cosmic! I looked to the night sky for a name representing the V-stitch used in this super easy scarf pattern! There was only on name I had ever heard of: Velorum. If you are geeky like me, then you'll recognize the name from Star Wars:

I call for a vote of no confidence in Chancellor Velorum.

Aside from that, Velorum is a star system in the constellation Vela.

Perfect for Mild Spring Weather

My swap partner lives in a climate where it can be hot during the day and temps drop 30 degrees at night. The lace effect of the V-stitches is perfect for warm spring days. But, it's long enough to double it up at night for extra warmth.

Supplies Needed

"J" Hook

2 Skeins (Total of 250 yards) of DK Weight yarn
I used Paton's Wool DK Superwash in the colorway Welsh Coast.

Pattern Repeat

V-Stitch is worked over 3 stitches.

To modify the length: chain a multiple of 3 until you reach the desired length, then ch 1 st for turning.

Stitches Used

V-Stitch - Work a dc, ch 1, dc

Velorum Scarf Pattern

Ch 181, dc into the 2nd st from hook and each ch across. Ch 2 & turn (180)
Row 1: V-stitch in the 2nd stitch, *skip 2 sts, v-stitch* until you reach the end, then complete a dc into the final stitch of the row. Ch 2 & turn.
Row 2: *V-Stitch into the ch 1 space from previous row* repeat across working a dc into the turning chain. Ch 2 & turn.
Row 3-8: Repeat Row 2.
Row 9: dc in each stitch across. Do not finish off...continue to Border (Optional).

Border (Optional)

If you want the whole scarf to have a dc border (like Rows 1 & 9), then you'll add DCs evenly spaced on the short sides as follows.

Border 1: Continuing from Row 9, ch 1 and rotate work so that you are now working on the short side of the scarf. Work one dc into the same space as the last dc in Row 9. DC along the short side finishing with a dc in the same space as the dc from Row 1. Ch 1 and slip stitch to the dc. Finish off and weave in ends.

Border 2: For the other short side, make sure you have the "right side" facing you and join yarn to the dc from Row 1. Ch 1, dc in the same space as the dc you joined to, then continue dc across the short side finishing with a dc in the same space as the dc from Row 9. Ch 1 and slip stitch to the dc from Row 9. Finish off and weave in ends.

Bonus Gift - Fingerless Gloves

The V-Stitch is a really easy stitch to modify to your own project! When you are working in the round, you'll chain a multiple of 3. However, if you are working a flat piece (like the scarf above), you'll chain a multiple of 3 plus 1! The "plus 1" is lost when you turn and start working into the 2nd ch. I didn't write down the pattern for the fingerless mitts, but I thought they were a fun addition to the swap package.

Wrap-Up of Ravellenics 2014

I participated in my first Ravellenic games this year! Ravellenics coincides with the Olympics and it's a time where fiber artists challenge themselves to complete projects and compete on teams.

I was on the team TreeHouse Crochet and started out the games by not pushing myself too hard. I coasted through the first 4 or 5 projects and chose one project that took an entire week of focus to complete.

Aerial Unwind

This was by far the easiest competition that I participated in. I was making a scarf for a swap and ended up not having enough wool to complete the scarf.

I used every inch of yarn, then had to frog it (unwind it). It was really hard to unravel that many hours of work, but it was also incredibly freeing! I may start unwinding a little more regularly in the future.

Hat Halfpipe

I watched a lot of Olympics on NBC simply because I was competing in Ravellenics. I caught the Women's Halfpipe event and was so sad to hear the story of Sarah Burke. Her story and the coverage of this event was truly inspiring and, even now, I continue reflecting on the comments of her parents in the interview. They are truly amazing parents whom I aspire to be like.

Toy Tobogganing

Of course this was the most fun event of all! Who doesn't smile when they make fun toys for kids? We have named this dog puppet, Scout, since that's the name of the dog in our church's Sunday School lessons. The kids love Scout! I get to teach Sunday school next week and can't wait to use him with the kids.

WIPs Dancing

Intended for a charity collection seeking 70 animals for children in a women's shelter, Owen the Monkey quickly fell through the cracks last fall. I had finished crocheting all the pieces (including his head/body and facial features not shown in this fun photo) last October, but her remained in pieces until now.

And here he is all finished next to his favorite monkey friend, Peach.

Scarf Super-G and Mitten Moguls

Do you remember that scarf above where I ran out of yarn? I remade it creating a pattern as I went and here's the finished scarf.

Since this scarf is a little more open-work, I ended up having enough wool remaining to barely squeeze out this matching pair of fingerless gloves.

Sweaterboard Cross

This is the area where I challenged myself. I never make garments. I typically refuse requests to make dresses, clothing and blankets. These projects take so much time and just aren't worth it. But, I decided that I would make a sweater once for myself. The total project cost for this sweater was $20.00 and this includes the price of the yarn and the price of the pattern.

I need to get better photos of the sweater. It's called the Simply Elegant Sweater designed by Jenny King. It's a gorgeous, loose-fitting design that I truly believe would look great on any body type. I wore it to church today and it got a lot of positive feedback. I don't know why, but I'm always a little embarrassed when things I make get that much attention.

This sweater weighs close to 20 oz. and used between 950-1,000 yards of Caron Simply Soft yarn.

Conclusion of Ravellenics 2014

I thoroughly enjoyed the games! I really pushed myself to make the sweater and I'm so happy to have actually finished it in time. I can't believe that I fit in SIX projects aside from this one. I'm completely amazed at what we can accomplish when we push ourselves to reach our goals.

My team, Treehouse Crochet, had a competition running based on projects completed during the games and the total yardage of our projects. But, I'm satisfied in earning the Ravthlete badge! I'll be wearing it proudly as my Ravatar for many weeks to come.

This was my first Valentine's project. I made it in January while my mom was in surgery. It works up so fast and makes a great teacher's gift!

This didn't quite fit on my cup, but it was the perfect size for a wrist warmer. I'm keeping it for myself and need to make a second one for the other hand. This is the perfect project for those scrap yarns!

Believe it or not, before this year, I had only made ONE headband/ear warmer. Crazy, huh? I set out looking for a free pattern that had a decent texture, but would also be a mindless project for sitting in the hospital waiting room and look great! The 30-Minute Cowl - Free Crochet Pattern

My husband's grandmother is a piano teacher and she requested a short, warm scarf with a button that she could wear with her winter coat. That's how this design was born. I wanted something simple, but elegant. I wasn't necessarily going for a quick project, but I was able to crank these cowls/scarves out in record speed!

The maroon version was made with two strands of Red Heart With Love.

Upper right was made with Lion Brand Homespun Thick & Quick.

Lower right was made with two strands of Lion Brand Jiffy.

I call this the 30-minute Cowl, because the short version works up super quick since you work into the chain spaces and not directly into the stitches. :-)

Supplies

Size N/P Crochet hook 10 mm

Lion Brand Homespun Thick and Quick (or hold 2 strands of WW together throughout)

Optional: Decorative button for scarf (not necessary for cowl option)

Gauge

7 hdc x 6 rows = 4"

Lengths Available

Neck Scarf/Cowl - Follow the first set of stitch counts.

Infinity Cowl - Follow the stitch counts in parentheses (XX).

NOTE: Rows 2 & 3 are worked the same for both lengths.

The Pattern

Row 1: Ch 41 (83), hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each stitch across. Turn. (40, 82)

Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc & ch 1), Skip the next stitch, hdc in next stitch, *ch 1, skip the next stitch, hdc in next stitch* repeat from * through end of row. Ch 1 and Turn (40, 82)

Row 3: *2 hdc in each space across* repeat from * until the last space. In final space, hdc once in space, then hdc once in the turning chain. Ch 2 & Turn (40, 82)

Row 4-7: Repeat Rows 2 & 3 twice.
Note: For a wider scarf, continue repeating rows 2 & 3 until you reach the desired width. Do not cut yarn.

Finishing Off the Scarf

Rotate the piece so that you are working along the short edge.

Edge Row 1: sc in each stitch across. Ch 1 & Turn (7)

Edge Row 2-3: Repeat Edge Row 1.

Attach large decorative buttons and use the holes created from the pattern to button the scarf.

Finishing Off the Cowl

With the piece laying flat, fold the two ends together and create one twist.

Whipstitch the ends together. Pay careful attention to your tension...you don't want the seam to buckle (squish), but you also don't want it too loose.

3 Steps to an Invisible Join

If you are like me (a bit of a perfectionist and slightly OCD), then you will love this technique for creating an invisible join when working in the round. The invisible join mimics the "V" look of a regular stitch so that it blends in and you can't see the beginning or end of a round. I use this on all of my hats and amigurumi pieces.

I'll teach you how to do it in three easy steps!

This replaces the slip stitch normally done at the end of your project.

Step 1 - Cut the yarn tail

Cut the yarn and pull the final loop so that the tail comes completely through. Thread the tail onto a yarn needle so that it looks like the picture below. The length of your tail will be based on the pattern. If the pattern says leave a long tail for sewing, then cut a long tail. If the instructions are to weave in ends, then you can leave a shorter tail.

Step 2 - Mimicking the Front Half of the V-Stitch

Insert the yarn needle (front to back) through the first stitch in the round. This is the stitch where you would have normally completed the slip stitch.

This step creates the front loop of the Invisible Join.

Step 3 - Mimicking the Back Half of the V-Stitch

Insert the yarn needle from front-to-back into the final stitch of the round. You will go down through the middle space and go under the back loop.

This step creates the back loop of the Invisible Join.

And this is what it looks like:

When to Use This Technique

I use this technique for every edge piece. I used it is here on the tiny coins for my pot of gold. Don't those gold coins look perfect?

I also use this technique on hats, beanies and photography props so that there isn't an obvious end to the project. I like the edges to be uniform.

How to Crochet a Sweater for Your Elf

Does your family have an Elf on the Shelf? Do you know what he wants more than anything else? He wants a sweater of his own! You know they get tired of wearing the same old thing all the time. And, if you are having an ugly Christmas sweater party, then the elf should also be dressed in style. He does listen to your conversations throughout the day, you know!

Inspiration for this Project

After seeing Monsters University earlier this year, I graphed the Oozma Kappa design and thought I might make my 4 year old son a hat using the chart. But, he chose Minions instead. So, this chart has been saved on my computer until I realized that it was the perfect height/width for a sweater for Lloyd!

Supplies Used

Red Heart Soft Yarn - Green

Caron Simply Soft - Darker Green

Caron Simply Soft - Yellow

Size "E" crochet hook

Pattern

With Dark Green: Ch 32, join with slip stitch to first chain using caution to not twist the joining chain. (Note: Gauge is not included in this pattern. This round should be slightly loose around your elf.)

Round 1: ch 1, sc in same stitch as ch1 and in each stitch around, join with slip stitch.

Round 2: With Green, ch 1, sc in same stitch as ch 1 and in each stitch around, join with slip stitch.

Round 3-12: ch 1, sc in same stitch as ch 1 and in next 16 stitches, **Refer to chart for color changes.**, sc in last stitch, join with slip stitch.

Round 13: ch 1, sc in same stitch as ch 1 and in each stitch around, join with slip stitch.

Round 14: ch 1, sc in same stitch as ch 1 and in each stitch around, join with slip stitch.

To work the first sleeve:
Slip Stitch in next two stitches, ch 1 & turn work.

Row 1: sc in same stitch as ch1 and in the next 5 stitches, ch 1, turn.

Row 2-11: sc in each stitch across, ch 1, turn (6)

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

To work the other sleeve:

Join yarn 2 stitches from the center of the arm pit area by doing a chain 1.

Row 1: sc in same stitch as ch1 and in the next 5 stitches, ch 1, turn.

Row 2-11: sc in each stitch across, ch 1, turn (6)

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Sewing the Sweater Onto the Elf

I had to get creating with designing the sweater because my elf's hands are still stuck together. Which, in my opinion, adds to wonder of how this magical little elf got that sweater on.

Slip the sweater onto the elf from the bottom.
Use the long tail to wipstitch the sleeves closed starting at the cuff and working to his shoulder. Tuck the yarn tail into his back. The kids will never know it's there! Repeat this process for the other side.
Make sure the elf's collar covers up the loose ends at the top.

How to Pack and Send a Box for Operation Christmas Child

Thanksgiving is so late this year and is therefore shortening the most wonderful time of the year. Christmas music and decorations are banned from our house until Santa makes his grand appearance in the world-famous Thanksgiving Day Parade.

But, I give all of you permission to break tradition just long enough to pack a shoebox for Operation Christmas Child. Pop in your favorite Christmas music, gather the family and have some good old-fashioned fun while teaching your children how to be giving, caring individuals. I am asking each reader to commit with your family to pack one shoebox filled with trinkets and treats for a child around the world.

What is required from you?

A box (cardboard or plastic - similar in size to a shoe box). Want to have a shoebox packing party? You can order boxes online for a donation.
Print and attach a label for your box indicating gender and age group of the recipient!
Stuff the box with goodies (more info below)
Drop-off your box during the 3rd week of November!

How to Eat Chia Seeds (Ch-Ch-Ch-Chia)

Did you know that Chia seeds are a superfood providing lots of benefits to your body? Here are just a few things about Chia, but Google will tell you tons more benefits to this ancient superfood!

There are massive benefits to eating chia seeds, but how to do you get them in your body?

My first attempt with Chia was the only way I had ever heard of eating them.

Mix 1 TBSP of Chia Seeds in 6 oz. of water.

The Result:The mixture was so thick, I had to shovel it in my mouth with a spoon. And, I didn't enjoy it. In fact, I had to battle thoughts of my 4 year old picking his nose and eating it as I tried to swallow each bite. Honestly, that's all I could think of. So, when you try Chia, this is How NOT to eat Chia.

Mixed in Applesauce

I keep individual-size servings of applesauce in my desk at work for a healthy, non-perishable snack.

I also keep a small container of Chia seeds in my desk.

One day, I decided to mix the two for a late morning snack. It wasn't quite lunchtime, so I just wanted something small to hold me over for another hour.

I know it looks green and slimy (like boogers), but I promise you that this is an error in lighting or something. It didn't look green at all and it didn't smell funny. It looked and tasted like applesauce.

I ended up being so full after eating that I wasn't hungry for lunch and I barely started getting hungry in time for dinner 6+ hours later.

That makes for one awesome late morning snack and natural hunger control.

Add Chia to Your Salad

You know how sometimes you eat a salad and you feel like you haven't eaten at all? I bought a pre-packaged Caesar salad mix with lettuce, shredded parmesan and dressing.

I sprinkled some Chia seeds on my salad and it gave it a perfect crunch, plus it added protein and fiber.

I like to eat Chia before they have expanded, so that they expand during digestion to provide that long-lasting full-feeling. Chia seeds absorb lots of water, so make sure you drink lots of water!

How Do I Feel After Eating Chia?

I feel full. And I don't get hungry for like 6+ hours.

So far, I haven't felt like it has given me extra energy. But, I'm not consuming it regularly yet, so maybe in time I will notice this benefit.

The extra fiber is beneficial and did not make me gassy the way other high-fiber things have done (like Kashi GoFart! aka Kashi GoLean)

How Do You Eat Chia?

Do you eat Chia? Leave me a comment and tell me how you like to consume it! My friend likes to put it in yogurt the night before and let it swell up in her yogurt. My personal preference is to eat it dry while drinking lots of water and letting it swell up internally for that long-lasting full feeling. What Is Your Favorite Part of Your Daily Routine?

I attended my first MOPS meeting this week and this was my ice breaker question. My shallow answer was that my favorite part is collapsing into bed at the end of the day. While it's true that I am thankful when evening finally comes and I finally get to rest, it isn't true that this is my favorite part of my day.

My real favorite part of my day involves my sweet little four year old.

I sneak into Vance's room every morning and play this game of, "Where's Vance?" He has a captain's bed and I never know if he is going to be in the normal bed or the catch-me-when-I-fall bed.

Sometimes he's on his BumbleBee pillow. Sometimes he's sprawled out uncovered using every inch of his body to take up as much space as a little guy can in a twin-size bed. But, it's been cold lately and he's been wrapped up in his beloved Thomas the Train blanket.

With the help of the hallway light, I'll finally spot his little head. I smile. And I leave him for the day. Then, I go downstairs and give my older son hugs and kisses and head off to work. This morning game and hugs from Shepard are my favorite part of my day, which is immediately followed by the hardest part of my day...leaving them for work which is a one-hour drive away from home.

And That's Why I Need to Connect with Mommies

Most of the mommies with whom I have developed meaningful friendships are work-at-home-moms (WAHM). They crochet. They homeschool their kids. They bake. They craft. Their homes are organized. They run around with their kids all day. It's so dreamy, right? I realize it's a bit exaggerated, but the truth is that they get to stay home. As much as I would love to be a full-time mom, that's just not how God orchestrated my life. I have to work and He has blessed me professionally.

But, anyway...

I need to develop meaningful relationships with mommies who work away from home like me. And this is why I think the mommy group is going to be great for me! I loved the diversity of the group...there were lots of happy working moms and a handful of moms who do not work outside the home who also desire a personal connection with other local moms.

Contributing to the Group

I introduced myself as a big computer geek who also has a side business crocheting. So during the meeting and after the meeting, moms were asking me if I could teach them to crochet or help with their sewing machine problems. I recommended Craftsy as an excellent source for learning how to work with your sewing machine and also learning how to do other crafts.

How to Swap Crochet Bits with a Friend

I have developed some amazing friendships through crochet. One friend in particular has become such a great friend! The Ravelry Group where we met was gearing up for a monster swap. With swaps, there is no guarantee who you will be partnered with. So, we did our own mini swap off the boards and just had fun with it. And these are the monsters we ended up with!

How to Pick a Pattern That is Good for Swapping

The pattern should have several pieces, but it also needs to have one main piece.

It also should be one where you can make it in two colors (or more if you would like).

Pick a pattern where all the pieces can be made completely prior to assembling. For our monsters, we each kept our own body so that we could attach pieces before actually stuffing/finishing off. Although, if I'm being honest, I finished mine months ago and already had him stuffed/closed off just waiting for the monster bits.

Monsters are perfect for swapping because you can have a lot of fun with colors. Half the fun of swapping is pulling out some of your more fun yarns. Even if you don't choose a monster, choose something where you can get away with fun colors.

How to Swap Pieces

Once you choose a pattern, then you need to pick colors. You'll pick a color and your partner will pick a color. I chose Sparkly Turquoise and she chose purple.

You will both make the pattern in full using the color you selected and you can throw in an accent color. So, I made a body and all the bits in my Sparkly Turquoise yarn. My friend made her body and bits in Purple yarn.

Next, you need to figure out which pieces you'll keep and which ones you'll swap. We kept our own bodies and sent all the other pieces. It's easiest to keep your own main piece, because most patterns will say to attach the pieces prior to stuffing/finishing off the body/head. So, keep those two. Additionally, those are usually the largest pieces and it saves on shipping.

What fun would a swap be without extras?

Aimee sent me an amazing package of monster bits, stitch markers, magnets and a keychain. It was such a blessing! I feel so bad! I still haven't photographed the other things she sent, but I photographed these and you may have spotted me using them in some past WIPs.

Here is a snippet of the things I sent her. I know the photo quality isn't the best, but these are unedited. She's a scientist, so I sent her some drosophila stitch markers. Sadly, only one fly made it without becoming an amputee. A man in our church makes paracord bracelets, so I sent her a keychain. Then, one tiny completed monster and two pouches sewn by me. I drew the owl sitting on the tree branch and the fabric was hand-picked for her. :)

I really want to do more swaps now!

I have participated in a half-dozen or so swaps now and I have decided the ones I like the best are where I actually get to know the other person during the swap. I hope you'll give craft swaps a try!

Rainbow Fishing Game - Free Pattern

A local customer contacted me to make a fishing game set for her grandson. She referred to one of my pins on Pinterest that turned out to not have a pattern with it (a second reminder to be careful what you pin). I agreed to make a fishing game in my own style and that's what you'll find below. The idea for a fishing game is not original, but the pattern is my own design.

Supplies

Worsted Weight Yarn - 7 Colors needed for the rainbow, a lip color, plus 6 fish colors

Small amount of Crochet Thread (I used Bernat's Handicrafter Cotton Thread Size 5 in Gray)
Size "B" 2.25 mm crochet hook
Size "G" 4.25 mm crochet hook
Small Amount of stuffing
Sew-on Craft Eyes (optional)
6 Washers (1/2" or smaller with a hole large enough to fit your hook through)
Super Strong Magnets - I used one magnet 8 mm wide by 3 mm high
Tree Branch or Dowel Rod for Fishing pole

Stitches

Magic Circle
sc - Single Crochet

sl st - Slip Stitch

sc2tog - Single Crochet two together

The Pattern

Tailfin

The lovely heart shaping on the tailfin is achieved by creating two separate pieces, then attaching them together on Round 3. To do this, you will work Piece A through Round 2 and fasten off. For Piece B, you will follow the same first two rounds, then join Piece A and Piece B together while crocheting on Round 3.

Using body color, Ch 2.

Round 1: sc 6 times in 2nd ch from hook (6)

Round 2: *2sc, sc* repeat from * around (9)

For first tailfin, fasten off. For 2nd tailfin, continue working.

Round 3: sc in next 4 sts of the current piece (Piece B), work the next sc into the first unworked stitch of Piece A, then continue working 1 sc in next 8 sts, then work 1 sc in the 5 remaining sts of Piece B. (18)

Round 4: *sc2tog, sc* repeat from * around (12)

Round 5: *sc2tog* repeat from * around (6)

Fasten off with a short tail.

Note: You may notice a small gap where the pieces were joined together. The tail will not be stuffed, so it's ok to leave it as is. However, if you use this technique on a project that will require stuffing, you can use the yarn ends from fastening off Piece A to close the gap.

Fish Body

The fish begins by working single crochets around the washer using the lip color. To work a single crochet around the wash, draw up a loop through the hole in the center of the washer, then yarn over and pull through the loop at the edge of the washer.

Round 1: Using lip color, work 12 sc around washer. For this round only, join with sl st. Pull up a loop using the body color and ch 1. Pull the tail of the lip color tightly around the body color and fasten off leaving a short tail. (12)

Round 2: Using body color, sc in each stitch around (12)

Round 3: *2sc, sc* repeat from * around (18)

Round 4: sc in each stitch around (18)

Round 5: *2sc, sc in next 2 sts* repeat from * around (24)

Round 6-8: sc in each stitch around (24, work 3 rounds)

Round 9: *sc2tog, sc in next 2 sts* repeat from * around (18)

Round 10: sc in each stitch around (18)

Round 11: *sc2tog, sc* repeat from * around (12)

Round 12: sc in each stitch around (12)

At this point, you should stuff the fish and attach safety eyes if using them. Safety eyes should be secured at the same spot on each side of the fish.

Round 13: *sc2tog* repeat from * around (6)

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Assemble the Fish

Thread the long tail from the fish body through a yarn needle and begin sewing the tail and fish together by picking up one loop from the tail, then one loop from the fish and continue around. Fasten off by tying a knot and pulling it to the inside.

NOTE: If you used eyes, make sure you position the tail correctly (up/down) in comparison with the eyes.

The Magnetic Hook

To make the magnetic portion as safe as possible, I crocheted a small encasement around the magnet leaving a small portion of the bottom of the magnet exposed.

Using crochet thread (size 5 cotton) and a size "B" hook.

Round 1: Crochet 10 scs into a Magic Circle. Pull the circle until the last sc meets up with the first sc. There will be a small opening in the center of the magic circle.
Round 2: *sc 2 tog* around.
Fasten off leaving an 18" tail.

Insert the magnet into the middle of the crocheted piece.

Using a yarn needle, pull the tail through one loop of each sc from Round 2. Pull the tail tightly to close up the hole on the top.

Fishing Pole

Cut a stick (or dowel rod) to approx. 10" long.

Wrap the long tail of the crochet thread around the fishing pole 3 times, then tie it off securely.

SAFETY FIRST

Magnets are not intended for use in toys for children under 3 years of age. Magnets can be harmful if swallowed as normal machines cannot be used to detect them. Never use two magnets in one project. If a child swallows two magnets, the magnets can stick together through the intestinal walls causing major damage. Please use caution when allowing your children to play with toys containing magnets.

The Triceratops Pinterest Dilemma

I adore Pinterest. It is a great source of inspiration and there are so many amazing things to be explored. I'm sure my non-crochet friends are sometimes annoyed by the amount of crochet-related pins I post. I'm not joking either...just look at how many boards I have that are related to crocheting, knitting, sewing and crafting. Yes, I could have joined pinner's anonymous, but I had something equally troubling happen and I hope this calls my crochet friends to action to clean up your boards and practice better pinning habits.

The situation I am sharing happened twice and both instances occurred very closely together.

The Pin that Caused the Dilemma

This triceratops is super adorable! I pinned it because I thought it was really cute and would make a great baby gift. My friend also loved it. She contacted me and wanted me to make that dinosaur. If you follow the pin, it takes you to a page called Wanelo and it displays an error message.

No worries. Did you know you can drag any image into the google search box and it will show you where that image has been used on the web. I finally traced it back to an Etsy shop: HenryStMartin. The shop has a lot of super cute and cuddly animals, but they do not sell patterns. I searched on Ravelry for a pattern for this exact dinosaur and couldn't find him.

So, I Tried a Different Design

This is Tara the Triceratops designed by one of my friend's on Ravelry. I pinned this pattern to my Amigurumi Board on Pinterest and asked my friend, what do you think of this one? She came back that the original one she requested was the one she really wanted because it most resembled the plastic toy her son plays with all the time.

Introducing the Favorite Plastic Dino Toy

This is the toy that the sweet little boy plays with all the time. His mom loves him so much that she wanted to buy him a huggable sized animal that resembles his wind-up toy.

I always stand my ground on respecting other people's designs and not copying. I offered to replicate the plastic toy dino in yarn.

The Moral of the Story is....

Be careful what you pin! Pinning is fun and we love sharing what our friends' designs and finished items. But, be mindful that at some point, someone will see something that you cannot morally and ethically recreate. The only way that I justified this one is by making the animal look like the plastic toy. It doesn't look like my friend Hollie's design nor does it look like the Etsy triceratops. In the end, I think the little boy is going to love his dino.

I have been asked if I will write out and sell this pattern. For this one, the answer is no. I have had a lot of fun creating this. If you want to make a triceratops, then please buy the pattern I linked above. Hollie is working really hard to create 70 amis that will be gifted to kids this Christmas. Yarn is expensive and every pattern sale will help fund her charitable project. :)

Don't Watch This Show While Crocheting

My Husband is Annoyed by my Inability to Focus While Watching Alias

I was discussing a certain scene that I actually watched and conjecturing on what that scene might have meant. Who sent this message to Vaughn? My husband kinda rolled his eyes at me and said, "Well, if you were actually watching the show, then you would have seen the look Jack gave to Sydney and you would know that he took care of it."

Why is this not a good show to watch while crocheting?

You'll spend a lot of time reading subtitles because Sydney travels the globe speaking native languages wherever she goes. And, you'll miss the subtle nods from Vaughn to Syndey and vice versa if you aren't watching the show. Or, you'll miss that look the Jack gave Sydney. Occassionally, you will become so absorbed in the show and your hands just keep working and you've worked like 10 rounds more than necessary for the pattern...ummm, yeah. No one gets pleasure from frogging mistakes. So I came up with a few little tips for watching tv while crocheting.

5 Tips for Crochet-safe TV Viewing

Watch a classic movie or chick flick
Avoid espionage-type shows
Pick a light-hearted series where each episode is a story within itself
Watch sports (as long as you don't mind missing important plays)
Watch DIY-type shows for crafting, home decorating, etc.

My favorite things to watch are football games, old tv shows from the 80s/90s, craft shows, home decorating shows and those super gushy shows where brides-to-be pick out wedding dresses. I also like to watch chick flicks when I have the tv to myself.

FO Friday: Assembling the Minions

My younger son turned 4 last week and started preschool this past Monday. He demanded that I make him a Minion backpack for preschool. I was hesitant and we talked him into buying a camouflage dinosaur backpack instead. I kind-of felt bad for not making him the backpack, so I made him a Minion hat.

While I was working on it, he kept asking if it was his Minion backpack. And, I kept reminding him about his really cool dinosaur backpack. He wouldn't relent. A couple of weeks ago, I was driving to work when an idea came to me on how I could make the backpack.

So, I took about 5 minutes and drew out a couple of sketches:

Now that I had a plan, I knew I could bring it to life.

He loved it!

But, he thought a tiny animal needed to go in that pocket. After all, why have a pocket if you aren't going to put something cool in there? So, he grabbed one of my amis and tossed him in his backpack.

Last night, I was thinking that maybe I can enter the photo of him and his backpack and Tiny Ro in the FreshStitches Back-to-School photo contest. But, I didn't make Ro this month, so it doesn't seem fair to enter him. Then another brilliant idea came to mind. What if I assembled a new minion using the Ro pattern?

LOL! I love it! And, since it was something I wanted to make, it literally took no time at all.

And here they are a big happy family! The backpack, hat and Tiny Ro the Minion.

Warning: How to React to Pattern Thieves

Disclaimer: This is my personal opinion. My opinion may change from day to day, so this may be updated as I think of other things that should be mentioned and I welcome discussion on this topic. However, I do request that comments not be made in regards to laws/legal as I am avoiding that topic altogether. Also, please do not comment on this post with specific examples.

This post requires no introduction. If you have been in the Fiber Arts world for any amount of time, I bet you can quickly think of a pattern theft...whether it was a pattern-sharing ring or someone creating a free design for a paid pattern. Theft is theft. My personality type (INFJ) is known as the protector. I have solid moral values that I cling to and I have a strong desire for justice. This righteous anger, as it was once referred to, is a good thing, but needs to be guarded carefully.

At some point, you will see thievery and you need to know how to react. The first part is who are you? Are you a fangirl or a designer? And, second, what was stolen? Was it a photo, a copycat pattern, pattern ring, etc? The answers to these questions will help you figure out how to go about resolving the conflict.

ATTENTION FanGirls!

If you are a fangirl (or fanman for you guys) and you see a stolen pattern or photo, here is how you should react:

Copy down the link of where the theft occurred
Send that link to the owner of the design or photo
Move on with your life

There are no circumstances under which a fan girl should ever confront a thief. I have personal experience in this area. I guarantee that the thief has friends and they can be as brutally mean to you as the most evil person you know. Trust me on this. I have experience. :( Stay out of it and let the designer handle it.

I have been aware of a situation where a photo was presumed to have been stolen. Actually, the designer had permission from her customer (a crochet artist) to use the crochet artist's photographer's photo. The crochet artist had a good heart in letting the designer use it. She should not have had to have thousands of fan girls blasting her for using a photo that is hers. I repeat: Let the designer handle it!

Designers: How to React When a Photo is Stolen

Edit 8/23/2013: This section is in regards to using a designer's photo when selling a completed piece. You should always make and photograph your own work to accurately represent the final product to your customer. You are allowed to use the designer's photo when writing a review or including the design in a pattern round-up, but you should always have a link back to the designer's blog or a place where the pattern may be purchased. When in doubt, ask if you may use their photo.

Let's assume the best and say they are using your photo without permission and they don't understand that they have done something wrong. This one is simple. Here are a few things you can do:

Send them a private message requesting that your photo be removed. Only escalate to the next step if no action is taken on their part.
Comment on the photo stating it belongs to you and may not be used for any reason without permission. Only escalate to the next step if no action is taken on their part.
Report the image to Facebook, Google or the admin for whatever page where the photo appears.
If they refuse to co-operate, send them a cease and desist letter.

Designers: How to React When Someone Copycats Your Pattern

These situations are very sticky and very dirty and makes me think of this George Bernard Shaw quote:

Never wrestle with pigs. You both get dirty and the pig likes it.

Obviously, you have two options: fight or flight. The simpler choice is to flee the situation. The kinds of people who steal designs are typically not nice people. And those who are nice people have, coincidentally, had the same idea you had. It happens. Here are snippets of a conversation that happened on Facebook that I would urge you to think about before entering into battle.

You are the ones who are constantly coming up with the ideas, executing them, marketing them, and profiting from them. So instead of spending the time and wasting the energy trying to maintain exclusive control over your creations, why not spend the time creating?

And this was my immediate response:

Very well-stated. The thief has already stolen a design...and we tend to just crawl in a shell and surrender our creative spirit. Or worse, we waste our energy arguing and protecting. They can steal a design, but we shouldn't surrender our creativity.

I think that I have personally resolved to not confront thieves any more. Because, like I said in the fan-girl section, I have confronted a thief before. I never, ever want to make a choice that leads me into that again. It ruined a week of my life (or more?) and almost made me not even want to be part of the crochet community at all.

If you decide to fight it...

Give yourself time to calm down. I would recommend 24 hours at a minimum.
If multiple fans are posting the theft on your Facebook wall, then you need to write a generic status update. Dear fans, thank you for your concern about a pattern of mine that may have been stolen. I have deleted the comments from my facebook wall. Please message me privately any time you think something of mine has been stolen so that I may also deal with it privately.
Delete comments on your Facebook wall that direct attention to the thievery.
Do not participate in back-and-forth messages with your fans regarding the incident. They may be able to tell you a mile-long list of other designers that this same person has stolen from. If they do, then refer back to the George Bernard Shaw quote...and read the section below regarding, "The pig likes it!"
Once you have cooled down, send the presumed thief a private message.
Prepare for backlash...do whatever it takes to calm yourself. It will not be pretty.
You must swear to yourself that no matter how bad it gets, you will not make it public. As soon as you go public, so will they. Do not defend yourself if they go public first. They are the one at fault. Assuming you were nice and calm when you confronted them, they should not react like this.

How to Recover from the Theft

Having a pattern stolen can drain you mentally, physically, emotionally and creatively. You may lose your desire to design. In this, I would strongly urge you to be sensible. Take as much time as you need to cool down. You'll probably decide that it isn't worth going through again. But, please, keep designing! Do not let one person's knock-off of one of your designs cause you to surrender your creative spirit. Keep going! I'll be your cheerleader if you need me! :)

The Pig Likes It!

There are people who thrive on controversy. Every single click to their blog where the free pattern is posted generates revenue through ad sense. The more famous the designer they steal from, the more controversy brews. And with that controversy comes an influx in blog views and therefore the larger their AdSense payout will become. My personal choice is to ignore them and never ever do anything at all to promote them.

ZigZagging Hot Pad - Free Crochet Pattern

Color B: I Love This Cotton in Red

Size "G" 4.25 mm Crochet Hook (or size needed to match Gauge)

Stitches

Chain (ch)

Skip Stitch (sk st)

Double-Crochet (dc)

Double-Crochet in Front (dcif)

Double-Crochet in Back (dcib)

With Yarn B in Front (WBIF) - demonstrated in Photo

With Yarn B in Back (WBIB) - demonstrated in Photo

Gauge Swatch

Ch 20

Row 1: dc in 6th ch from hook, *ch 1, sk st, dc*, repeat from * across, ch 4, turn.

Row 2-5: dc in next dc, *ch 1, dc in next dc*, repeat from * across ending with a dc in the turning ch. ch 4, turn

After completing five row, your piece should measure: 4" wide x 3" high.

Note: Gauge is not important for this project, but it is recommended that you follow the gauge to create the same look in the fabric. Too big of a hook and you'll end up with holes in the fabric. Too small and the stitches may bunch up together.

TIP:

Pull out a longer loop on the last chain of each row so that you do not lose the chains while working the other color.

Pattern

Foundation Row A:

ch 40, dc in 6th ch from hook, *ch 1, sk st, dc* repeat from * across, ch 4. Set aside.

Foundation Row B:

ch 38, dc in 6th ch from hook, *ch 1, sk st, dc* repeat from * across, ch 4.

Place Foundation Row A (the longer one) on top of Foundation Row B. The dc posts from Color B should be visible through the "windows" on Color A. If you are right-handed, the working yarn will be at the right; if you are left-handed, the working yarn will be at the left.

{ Begin WBIB }

Row1A: dcib in next dc, ch 1, dcif in next dc, *ch 1, dcib in next dc, ch 1, dcif in next dc* repeat from * to end. The last dcif will be worked into the turning ch. Ch 4 and remove hook.

Row1B: dcif in next dc, *ch 1, dcib in next dc, ch 1, dcif in next dc* repeat from * to end. The last dcif will be worked into the turning ch. Pull two loops to the front and complete the dc. Ch 4 and remove hook. Turn piece.

{ Begin WBIF }

Row2A: dcib in next dc, ch 1, dcif in next dc, *ch 1, dcib in next dc, ch 1, dcif* repeat from * to end. Ch 4 and remove hook.

Row2B: dcib in next dc, *ch 1, dcif in next dc, ch 1, dcib in next dc* repeat from * to end. Ch 4 and remove hook. Turn Piece.

Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until piece measures approx. 7.5" wide by 7.5" tall, then go to "Border" Section. If you matched gauge, this should be the measurement. Otherwise, continue until it measures the same height/width.

After just a few sets of rows, you can really see the zigzags forming and the pattern becomes very easy to memorize. Just pay careful attention that Color B is in the correct place at the beginning of each row.

The Border

Round 1A: Sc around edge completing 2 sc in each space plus two extra sc's at the corners. We are crocheting in the spaces here and NOT into the dc's.

Note: You will crochet over both posts on the foundation row and the last pattern row you worked. This will secure the two fabrics together.

Round 2B: Sc in each stitch around completing 2 sc in each corner st. Join with a sl st and finish off.

That's it! Now you have a beautiful looking fabric and a handy dishcloth, hot pad or oven mitt.

My goal here is to save you all the beginner's mistakes and teach you everything you'll need to know to complete your first Interlocking Crochet project.

What is Interlocking Crochet?

Interlocking Crochet is a method of crocheting two layers of filet-style mesh sheets in such a way that the two layers are woven together to create a single, reversible fabric. Depending on the stitch used, it can create the same pattern on the front and back or two completely separate designs on the front and back.

5 Things You Need to Know Before You Begin

Pick contrasting colors to make the design pop. You'll need TWO colors to start: Color A and Color B.

Each row of the pattern has a Row1A and Row1B. You will work Row1A with Color A from right-to-left (or left-to-right if you are a leftie). Then, you will work Row1B with Color B from right-to-left (or left-to-right if you are a leftie).

Color A is always crocheted into Color A. Color A yarn over will never wrap around Color B. The same is true with Color B.

Check and match the gauge provided! Since this is a new technique to most of us, we can't just assume that our "normal gauge" will work.

Special Stitches for this Technique

Chain (ch)

Double-Crochet (dc)

Double-Crochet in Front (dcif)

Double-Crochet in Back (dcib)

With Yarn B in Front (WYIF) -- only used at the start of each row.

With Yarn B in Back (WYIB) -- only used at the start of each row.

Every interlock crochet project begins by having you crochet two mesh pieces with one piece being slightly shorter than the other. I will provide instructions in the project post for creating these base foundation pieces.

To start Row 1, you will lay the Color A piece on top of the Color B piece with the working yarn of both pieces at the same edge. This will be the right edge if you are right-handed or left edge if you are left-handed.

For my project, White is my Color A yarn, Red is my Color B yarn.

The most important thing to pay attention to at the beginning of each row is whether the Color B (red) yarn should be placed in front (WYIF) or in back (WYIB). Photo at left shows WYIB and the photo at right shows WYIF.

Note that in the photo where Color B is in front, the chains and working tail for Color B are BOTH in front.

Notes on Double-Crochet in Front/Back (DCIF/DCIB)

Both the DCIF and DCIB are normal double-crochets. You will yarn over, then insert your hook into the next double crochet, finagle the top two loops a bit, then complete the dc.

You have to finagle the two loops you are crocheting into so that you do not force Color A to wrap around Color B or vice versa. By pulling the loops to the front (DCIF) or to the back (DCIB), this frees the dc to continue to be independent of the other color.

Double-Crochet in Front (DCIF)

Insert hook from front to back into the next double-crochet. In photo 2, you may be tempted to yarn over and complete the double crochet. Resist the urge! Just pull the two loops to the front as seen in the 3rd photo. With the loops in the front, complete the double-crochet as normal.

Double-Crochet in Back (DCIB)

Insert your hook through the back working through the "window" formed by the opposite color and come up through the front of the dc. Pull the loops to the back and complete the double-crochet as normal.

Photo 1: below shows that I have inserted my hook from back to front and came up through the two loops of the dc I plan on working next.

Photo 2: Use the hook to pull these two loops to the back.

Photo 3: I have yarned over and pulled up a loop. The purpose of this photo is to show that the white yarn never wraps around the red yarn.

Finishing Off Friday - an Elephant and Yoda

Before I share my projects, I have to share this photo. Wednesday marked 6 years since my sister passed on from this world. My brother-in-law has been faithful to take a dozen roses to my sister every year on certain dates. When my husband, sons, mom and I arrived at the cemetery Wednesday night, her dozen roses were sitting on top of the tombstone. My niece took a balloon to her mom that said, "Miss You".

Don't cry for us. Just pray that God continues to comfort our family and the two precious kids she left behind.

Now onto the Projects of the Week!

I finished this elephant last Saturday. Isn't she presh? I made her as a gift and she was received perfectly!

How to Use Your Crochet Stitch Markers for Knitting

I made these monster stitch markers for myself a few months ago. The problem is I am multi-craftual and I needed some stitch markers for knitting a pair of socks. But, I didn't want to break out the clay to create a whole new set of stitch markers.

Just Buy Some Split Rings!

Really, you could just use them alone. But they aren't very pretty and it would be very easy to lose it with just the ring there.

My little monster stitch marker hopped right on that split ring and now he is happily pretending to be a stitch marker for knitting even though he's really a crochet guy!

I hope you found this tip fun and helpful! If you are a knitter who might crochet some day, go ahead and start buying the crochet stitch markers. A crochet stitch marker can pretend to be a knitting stitch marker, but a knitting stitch marker cannot pretend to be a crochet dude.

How I Kept Myself From Being Successful

I was asked by someone local, "Are you still crocheting?" Eek...The fact that someone asked that question is a problem. I crochet all the time. So, why would a local person have to ask me if I'm still crocheting?

I had to search myself and realized that I am keeping success away by hiding my pieces from the world. It sent me on a search to figure out what misconceptions do I have that are keeping me from being successful? And, in the end, it resulted in the fact that I am neglecting the platforms I have on which to promote my finished pieces to the world of people who may end up buying them.

I have neglected my blog

June was a difficult month for me personally. It leads up to the time of my sister's death, which my husband will assure you is a difficult time for me every year. I also encountered a very brutal personal attack after I unwisely confronted an unjust situation. Oy. So, I completely lacked motivation to expose anything of myself to the world and that included the beautiful things I created in June. I attempted to make up for that by posting a June wrap-up on July 1st.

I have neglected Facebook

Facebook algorithms change faster than anyone can keep up and the changes they have made over the past 18 months have made it nearly impossible for small business owners like me to continue reaching our fan base. It has actually caused on blogger to consider preparing for the fall of Facebook.

When my posts got to the point of reaching less than 10% of my fans, I stopped posting. Very few people were seeing the posts anyway (although I can always count on a few family members and faithful friends to like my posts). Stopping entirely was not the right way to approach the problem. So, I will start posting my projects on Facebook with diligence.

I have neglected my Etsy Shop

I pour my heart and soul into every piece I make. I treasure them and I don't want to throw it out to the Etsy wolves who feast on the beauties before their eyes. Let's face it. Most of the moms who sit around browsing Etsy are buying from Etsy. I would say there are very few shops on Etsy that have established their shop to become the preferred supplier of the item they make (the term supplier comes from my day job...forgive me for that). They aren't buying it from Niccupp Crochet or any other shop name out there. I wish there were a magic formula that would trigger the mom's memory of who she bought the item from. Or photographers for that matter.

Do the consumers of a crocheted piece really care who made it? As long as the quality is excellent and it arrives quickly and in perfect condition, the mom will be happy. Do they remember who they bought it from? Probably not. If you sell on Etsy, I would love if you could leave a comment and tell me how many return customers do you have? This is in regards to completed items only (not pattern sales).

What can we do to interact with our buyers more so that they see us for who we are and not just see our single item the fit their keyword search on Etsy?

Where are my items going and Who gets to see them?

The simple answer is my items are going nowhere. My finished objects get flashed around on Ravelry and I share them in a few Facebook groups with friends who crochet. All I want is for them to be loved and these groups of people are always happy to congratulate one another on our recent accomplishments. My items receive love and my heart is happy.

I also flash my items around at work where I have a faithful group of friends who adore that this geek can also get her craft on.

Because of my view toward Etsy and my dislike for Facebook, my finished items are not selling.

The Number One reason my items are not selling is because I am not posting them for sale!

My collection of finished pieces is growing and growing. I have actually started giving quite a few pieces away this year because it makes me feel better when I select their homes than when someone selects my item for their home. That's the wrong way of thinking for a business owner, isn't it?

Where do I go from here?

The obvious answer is that if I truly want Niccupp Crochet to be a business, then I have to be willing to sell my items. That seems obvious right?

I have to be willing to let my items go to people I don't know.

I have to be willing to accept money in exchange for the pieces I work so hard to create. This includes accepting the fact that there will be moms who buy from Etsy and never remember my name. The thing is, I'm not just out there trying to make a buck. My goal first and foremost is to expose the world to the beauty of the fiber arts and make them want what I make.

So, yeah, I'm not really out there trying to make a buck, but making a little money seems to be required for not only maintaining a business, but running a successful one.

Do your personal opinions hinder you from becoming the business you could be or ought to be?

In response to the question which started this post, "Are you still crocheting?"

The answer is yes. The four images that you see in this blog post are things that I have made in the past 5 days. FOUR finished items in 5 days is pretty good. And this doesn't include the Yoda hat that is in progress nor does it include the mystery amigurumi animal I am working on where I have crocheted 19 pieces out of what I think will be a total of 20, but could be 21.

I definitely stay busy crocheting. I do it because I enjoy it and it helps me relax. I hope that it also makes YOU smile and appreciate the artform known as crochet.
