Unusual US Travel Destinations: Oklahoma

Being a local Oklahoma dweller, I really have to watch what I wear around certain parts of the state. That may sounds like a really strange statement, but it’s completely true and for good reason. Anytime visitors come from out of town, they’ve got some places they want to see and they’re quite eager to ask for directions. If visitors are wearing Oklahoma apparel, chances are they will seek out someone wearing Oklahoma apparel to help them. Friendships can start this way too, like in this story I read recently (yes, us Sooner fans are a friendly bunch).

Along those lines, my favorite apparel is always comfortable apparel. I’m a laid-back kind of guy and I like to be casual about my attire as much as possible. Being the graduate of OU, I’m prone to wearing a lot of Sooners clothing. So, anytime visitors with Oklahoma gear see me wearing Oklahoma gear, they flock to me with questions; usually questions about the oddest destinations here in Oklahoma. Here are just a few that I get asked about most frequently:

1. Gravity Hill, Bartlesville

This hill is aptly named for its ability to defy gravity. This hill has been a site of local mystery and folklore for decades. I’ve heard accounts of people parking cars on the hill, putting it in neutral, and watching the car roll up the hill instead of down. It's the same with dumping liquid on the pavement. It drips up. You can find this bizarre phenomenon on Google Maps if you want to check it out for yourself. I believe that’s the only way you can get hard proof.

2. MountOlivet Cemetery, Hugo

This is a very unique and strange cemetery with a section called “Showman’s Rest”, dedicated to circus performers who had traveled around the country for most of their lives. It contains headstones in the shapes of mini circus big tops, Ferris wheels and elephants. Among those at rest, former rodeo stars and bulls alike can be found amongst this section of the cemetery.

3. WorldWar II Bombing Site, Boise City

At various locations in Boise City, bomb hit sites have been preserved from an air raid that took place on July 5^,1943. Strangely enough, it was not an attack from an enemy. A training mission had set out early that morning and mistakenly dropped their bombs on Boise instead of Dalhart, Texas (which is 30 miles south). Luckily, the bombs were mostly made of sand and no one was injured.

It’s a well known fact that the U.S. misses out on most of Ford’s hot products, but with a push for new global models taking shape in Blue Oval offices around the world hopefully we will start to see more of these coveted models make their way Stateside.

Should be interesting to see how Ford plays out in the coming years. They seem to be doing quite well with international competition by their side. The products that have worked for them in the past are still in hot demand, and their cars are becoming much more fuel efficient, which is a major selling point for today's buyers.
