Scrappers Affect Google

Content scrappers affect your listing in Google that is not a doubt.

I did a video about seo proof yesterday which I showed you I was ranked for number 1 listing for the term ‘image seo tutorial’. Not a great keyword but none the less I showed you the proof that we can get listed in Google.

Today I did a quick search for ‘image seo tutorial’ and we were dropped from the listing in Google and it was replaced by a splogger that scrapped our content with the same tags title, url and keywords and description.

The only thing I can figure is that Google dropped us from the listing because of duplicate content was found but in that case we produced the video and article first and the scrapper website at web-sketchers.com should have been the one dropped from the listing. Which now that I do a search for that term it too was dropped from the listing. So it was either marked as duplicate content or the splogger reported our website to Google as spam and they delisted us.

Either way I do not think I will ever get an answer so to speak as Google does not have a support contact except for their forums and the report spam feature. Either way I am finding SEO to be very cutthroat and you should learn from this lesson.

I would like to also note that the scrapper found the original video on youtube. The only thing I can think of is why we were dropped from the listing and the scrapper was added is because they filed a spam report to Google. This is just pure speculation and will know more at a later date and time.

I just wanted to give you all a heads up if you did search for that term and we did not show in the listing you would know what was going on. It doesn’t change the fact that the other terms we listed for are still intact and the seo proof video is not intentionally misleading.

Web URL Tip

Let’s talk more about web url and some tips to picking ones that offer no hassle.

A friend of mine pointed out an interesting and intriguing article about TeachBook.com being sued by FaceBook.com. The lawsuit is for trademark infringement with using the word “book” in their name.

If you visit TeachBook it is an online community a lot like FaceBook where they are essentially riding the coattails of Facebook in attempt to bring teachers together on TeachBook. Teachers on Facebook are discouraged because many teachers are adding their pupils to their friends list. This which I agree should be deemed as inappropriate behavior of teachers. Teacher and pupil relationship should not reach outside the walls of a school.

So hence, the dawning and creation of TeachBook a viable alternative for teachers instead of Facebook. This case is getting played off as David vs. Goliath or big guy picking on the little guy by main stream bloggers. My opinion though differs than most bloggers in that I think Facebook has a valid and just case which will be soon be heard in the Northern District Court of California. Either way if you agree or disagree there is something we as webmasters can learn from cases like these.

Don’t Be An Imitation Website

For one it is fine to mimic another website in their techniques they use to drive traffic but creating a website that has the exact same features, layouts and similar url as a competing website will land you in court and it is a blackhat seo technique.

Although TeachBook might have the funds to retain a lawyer do you? All the work you put into your website including link building can effectively be lost if you had to change your url. Each and every link pointing to your website would return a 404 error, every internal link would have to redirected.

Think of it as recreating your website from square one if you had to change your url. Let’s consider the other repercussions and the amount of visitors that would leave your website because they realized you were just an imitation webmaster willing to do anything to get people to your website no matter how unethical. Plus if you tied your personal name to the Imitation website you would effectively tarnish your professional name for good as a webmaster.

As for my competition teaching seo. If I was a betting man which I am not I would say SeoBook is on that list of websites FaceBook is looking at. Sure would not want to be in his shoes if they decide to go after them. Either way these lessons we can learn from when registering a new web url.

What is a URL…

Although you might be thinking picking an internet URL is trivial at best meaning no thought should go into I disagree. From choosing the right extension to crafting an easy to remember website URL can help you gain more visitors.

The length of your site url is limited by two factors first one being is it easy to remember and the second being the shorter the url the greater the chance the said personal url is being used.

Longer URL’s get more visibility. I should say the more keywords in the URL the more variations of those search terms you will list for. A 2 word domain has the 4 possible word variations. For one each keyword can be searched for independently and two variations of the keyword used together for a total of 4 variations.

A domain name that contains three keywords has 3 possible singular search terms in it. 6 possible 2 word variants and 6 possible 3 word variants. A three word domain has a total of 15 possible keyword variations. Not bad. Here are some search terms we rank for to get my point across…

You should ask yourself one question when picking a web url. Is it easy to remember? The question will answer a lot of questions like should I use hyphens or underscores in my url.

Matt Cutts who is part of Google Webspam Team says use hyphens not underscores…

That’s why I would always choose dashes instead of underscores. To answer a common question, Google doesn’t algorithmically penalize for dashes in the url. Of course I can only speak for Google, not other search engines.

The question you should ask yourself is will visitors remember to use those hyphens and underscores that separate your keywords in your main URL? I would say most likely not.

So a hyphen is the answer when creating articles in the post url but in your top level url I would not use them because people will not remember to use them either.

Securing WordPress is rather simple. It takes a little of your time and helps to hinder hackers from hacking your WordPress website.

The first thing you should do when installing WordPress is to generate an authentication key. WordPress recently added an additional ways on top of the authentication keys to secure WordPress when. Even though you might have WP already installed like I do it is a very good idea to take advantage of Salts. Salts for WordPress equals added protection for your blog. Salts for WP can be found in wp-config.php. The new fields defined are…

Once that is finished another way to thwart hackers hacking your WP website is to update every patch. Although you might be thinking your website might break when you upgrade to the newest revision, then I suggest you to do a full database and website backup before updating WordPress to its most recent version.

Another great tip to securing WordPress is, do not give out your WP revision number. This is especially important if you don’t upgrade every revision. The more information the hacker has the easier and quicker it will be for them to exploit your website.

One of the most useful addons to secure your website is called Login Lockdown. What this cool little addon by Michael VanDeMar does is it restricts the amount of times a hacker can guess your user name and password to your WP Addon login. This effectively locks them out when they guess the wrong password. It is also fully configurable were you can set how long to lock out them out too which is very useful.

Let’s be totally honest if a hacker wants to brute force your website then they will and can gain access to your website. These tools and techniques effectively slow down the hacker.

That leads me to the best way to secure WordPress and that is with you doing frequent backups of your entire website. This will ensure if a hacker does hack your site you will soon be able to get it up and running because you have an updated backup all ready to replace any and all of the corrupt files.

SEO Gone Wild

SEO Gone Wild

Is too much SEO a bad thing? Many webmasters spend hours upon hours of worrying and refining their SEO techniques that help them in serps—search engine result pages. Although this mentality is good to have and can help you list higher within Google it can be overdone.

This is what I like to call SEO gone wild. Where the content of the website no longer caters to the reader but caters to search engines purely. A search engine algorithm is a computer program that solves a problem intuitively. The problem solved within search engines is which website is more relevant based on other websites within the niche keyword used.

The problem with any algorithm is it has no human ai — artificial intelligence. A good case in point is algorithms inability to distinguish words that are spelled the same but have different meanings. Although this is just restricted to certain words within the English language it is a basis to prove that an algorithm does not have the ability to think like the human mind thinks.

Another good example of this would be algorithms have the inability to detect quality content. Although website X might have followed seo techniques to the letter and lists higher, website Y might have extremely great content for their readers that far exceeds website X but lists lower. When this occurs usually what I do is paraphrase the word differently to get a set of results that are more relevant and user friendly or search deeper within the result pages.

So do you think too much seo or seo gone wild negatively affects top search result pages? Do you find yourself searching deeper in Google result pages more often than not to find relevant content? I would love to hear your opinion on this.

Too much SEO is a bad thing and can make your visitors feel like they are reading an search engine algorithm instead of a quality website. Imagine if every website on the internet practiced the same seo techniques?…I wonder which one would list higher for different search terms?

The bottom line is if you don’t concentrate on your visitor’s interests then you’re really missing the whole point of owning a website. If you buy into the whole seo gone wild then you might get a lot of one time visitors but over the long haul websites with quality content will beat you out.
