Unofficial Family Support System Burden

There are people in families who everybody seems to call when something goes wrong. A parent needs help getting to an appointment, a child has a problem, someone needs money, paperwork has to be completed, information needs to be researched, or a difficult situation needs to be handled. Over time, one person can become the unofficial support system for everyone else. Being dependable is usually described as a strength, and in many ways it is, but we do not talk enough about what happens when one person carries that role for too long.

A new report released September 15, 2026, by AARP and the National Alliance for Caregiving caught my attention because it puts numbers behind a situation many families already understand. The report focused on people who are raising children while also caring for an adult family member with a disability or complex medical condition. Some of you are aware that is what I did in recent years. Nearly 17 million Americans are currently living in what is often called the sandwich generation, and many of them are also trying to maintain jobs, households, relationships, financial obligations, and their own health.

The work consequences alone are significant. According to the report, 67 percent of employed sandwich-generation caregivers experienced some type of disruption at work because of caregiving responsibilities. Twenty-two percent reported high financial strain. Another finding stood out to me even more: only 16 percent said a health-care provider had ever asked what they needed to take care of themselves.

That number says a great deal about how caregiving often works. Attention naturally goes toward the person who is sick, aging, struggling, or in crisis. People ask how the parent is doing, whether the appointment was scheduled, whether the insurance company was contacted, whether transportation was arranged, or whether the latest problem has been handled. Meanwhile, the person doing much of the coordinating can slowly disappear from the conversation.

The dependable person may continue answering the phone, making arrangements, solving problems, changing schedules, and finding money for things that were never part of the monthly budget. From the outside, each task may look small. A phone call during work does not seem like much. Neither does another trip across town, researching medication, completing forms, picking something up, changing plans, or losing an hour of sleep thinking about what still needs to be done. The problem is that caregiving is rarely one isolated task. It is the accumulation of responsibilities over time.

Eventually, the effects begin to show up in places that may not immediately look connected to caregiving. Work can suffer because concentration is divided. Savings can shrink because emergencies keep appearing. Plans get postponed because there never seems to be a good time to focus on personal goals. Even rest can become difficult because free time is often used to catch up on everything that fell behind while helping someone else.

I believe families should help one another. I also believe we need to stop acting as though help has no cost. Love does not make the body less tired. Being a good daughter, son, spouse, parent, sibling, or friend does not automatically replace lost income or restore missed sleep. A person can deeply care about someone and still reach a point where the demands are affecting finances, work, health, or the ability to make decisions about the future.

Sometimes the first step is simply paying closer attention to what caregiving is actually costing. Look at the calendar and notice how often personal plans are moved. Look at the bank account and consider how much money leaves because another person needs assistance. Pay attention to sleep, concentration, frustration, and the amount of time spent managing problems that are not your own. It is also worth asking whether responsibility is truly being shared among family members or whether everyone has simply learned who will eventually handle the problem.

Lately, I have also been thinking about what happens when some of that responsibility finally ends and time, money, energy, or decision-making power returns. People who have spent years taking care of everyone else can become so accustomed to staying busy that they immediately find another place to put whatever has been returned to them. A free evening becomes another commitment. Extra money becomes another expense. Restored energy becomes another project.

I am beginning to see the value in not being so quick to fill that space.

Everything that comes back to you does not have to be reassigned. Money can remain in the bank. An evening can remain open. Energy can be present without immediately being used. A person can have enough strength to do something and still decide that nothing needs to be done right now.

For people who have spent years being the dependable one, that may take practice. It can feel unfamiliar to consider personal needs without immediately placing someone else's needs ahead of them. Yet the caregiving conversation in America is growing because millions of people are discovering that the person providing the care also needs support.

The statistics released this week give us numbers, but behind those numbers are people trying to hold together jobs, families, finances, health concerns, and responsibilities that often cannot simply be ignored.

Care has a cost, even when it is given willingly.

If you are the dependable person in your family, there is a question worth asking before another responsibility automatically lands on your shoulders: What do I need right now?

The answer may not solve everything, but it deserves to be part of the conversation.

I have spent years working in different environments and studying how people respond when things aren't working as well as they should. One thing I have learned is that the problem isn't always the people. Sometimes the way the work is being done is the problem.

A process may have made sense five years ago, but no one has stopped to ask whether it still does. Staff may be doing extra work because information isn't getting to the right person. A manager may think something has been clearly communicated while employees are operating from completely different understandings.

Then there is AI. Organizations are being encouraged to use it, but adding another tool to an already confusing process doesn't necessarily make the work better.

These are the kinds of problems that interest me.

I created Vision Under Pressure LLC, a consulting firm, because I wanted to take what I have learned through years of work, research, writing and leadership studies and use it to help organizations figure out what is actually going on.

I don't go into a situation assuming I already know the answer.

I want to know: Where is the pressure coming from? What keeps happening? What have you already tried? Who is being affected? Is this really a people problem, or is something in the process making it harder for people to do their jobs?

From there, the work might lead to a communication audit, workflow review, documentation assessment or another practical recommendation. Sometimes an organization doesn't need a major overhaul. It needs someone to look closely enough to find the issue everyone has learned to work around.

My doctoral studies in Leadership and Administration have given me more language and research for understanding many of the things I had already observed throughout my career.

That is what I am building with Vision Under Pressure.

Learning From Leaders: Why Conversations Still Matter

Over the years, I have spent a lot of time writing about people, work, personal growth, and the decisions we make when life becomes complicated. One thing I have noticed is that many people have valuable experiences that rarely get shared unless someone takes the time to ask.

A person can spend years managing a business, leading a team, running a nonprofit, or serving a community, yet many of the lessons they learn along the way remain with them. They know what worked, what failed, what surprised them, and what they would do differently if they had the opportunity to start over.

Those experiences are worth listening to.

As part of my doctoral studies in Leadership and Administration, I am completing coursework on communication and leadership. One of my assignments involves interviewing an organizational leader about growth, sustainability, community relationships, and the challenges involved with leading an organization.

The assignment is academic, but the reason behind it is something I have been interested in for years: understanding what happens behind the scenes when people make decisions that affect others.

Organizations are not built by plans alone. They are built through relationships, resources, communication, and the ability to adjust when circumstances change. A leader may have a vision for growth, but they also have to consider financial realities, stakeholder expectations, community needs, and the people who help make the organization successful.

Those decisions are not always easy.

Sometimes leaders have to determine whether expansion is the right move or whether strengthening what already exists is more important. Sometimes they have to communicate difficult changes while maintaining trust. Other times, they have to find ways to connect with people who may not immediately understand or support the organization's direction.

These are the types of experiences I hope to learn more about through this interview process.

I am looking for professionals with leadership experience who are willing to share their perspectives. This could include business owners, nonprofit leaders, managers, directors, community leaders, educators, or others who have helped guide an organization or team.

To make participation easier, I created several options depending on availability. Participants can choose a brief Zoom conversation, a phone interview, or a written response via a Google Form, which can be completed at their convenience.

The questions focus on topics such as organizational growth, financial sustainability, community culture, stakeholder relationships, and communication practices.

Why I Started Helping People Find Work They Actually Love

Lately, I have been having a lot of conversations with people who are tired.

Not just physically tired — though that is part of it when you are working 10 and 12-hour shifts. I mean the kind of tired that comes from spending years doing something that stopped feeding you a long time ago. People who are smart, capable, and completely stuck.

Some of them were laid off. Some are still showing up every day to jobs they dread. All of them are asking the same question underneath everything else they say: is it too late for me to do something different?

It is not too late. But the path forward looks different than it did even five years ago.

The job market has changed. Resumes get filtered by software before a human ever reads them. Industries that seemed stable are shifting. And the tools available to help people make strategic career moves — particularly AI tools used the right way — have made it possible to go from stuck to actively interviewing faster than most people realize.

I have spent nearly 30 years helping people communicate clearly and position themselves well. I have written books, consulted with organizations, and worked with individuals going through some of the hardest transitions of their professional lives, especially during 2020. This work is not new to me. What is new is what is possible now with the right tools and someone who knows how to use them on your behalf.

Let’s be real for a minute. If your life looks anything like mine right now, your desk is probably a beautiful, chaotic disaster: a stack of textbooks next to a client brief, a half-finished mug of cold tea (or probably coffee for you), and a notebook full of ideas for T-shirts and blog posts that have absolutely no business being next to your syllabus.

As we stare down the final weeks of the year—and the final push of the semester (in case you didn't know I continued with my doctoral studies after graduation, I know crazy!)—it’s easy to feel like we’re failing at everything because we’re trying to do everything. We’re writers, we’re students going back to school, we’re creators launching side hustles on Redbubble, Threadless, etc. and sometimes, we’re just exhausted humans.

This isn't about productivity hacks today. This is about acknowledging the beautiful, messy truth of the juggle.

Finding the Oasis in the Overwhelm

I’ve been creating pieces lately about finding your "vibe," organizing your life, and finding "stillness." But here's the honest truth: the real stillness often happens after the sprint, in those five minutes when you actually close your laptop and just look at the stack of things you managed to complete.

The inspiration for the next big project isn't found in a quiet retreat; it's found right here, in the middle of the mess you created. It comes from:

The resilience you find when you turn in a paper and deliver a client article on the same day.

That moment of overlap—where your student brain informs your writer brain, which then inspires your creator brain—is the magic. Don’t try to separate the hats; let them all be stacked on your head at a slightly ridiculous angle.

Three Rules for the Professional Juggler

If you’re feeling the weight of the "all the things," here are my three simple rules for making it through the last leg of the year:

Lower the Bar for Perfection: A submitted draft is always better than a perfect draft that sits on your hard drive forever. C-minus effort in one area (say, a less-than-perfect meal) allows for A-plus effort in another (that final paper). Decide where 'good enough' is actually good enough.
Designate Your Recharge Gear: What simple item reminds you to reset? For me, it might be a specific oversized mug, a comfortable hoodie, or a notebook I only use for brainstorming. Use these small, physical objects as a permission slip to pause.
Celebrate the Micro-Win: Did you finish that tricky bibliography? That's a win. Did you post that quirky sticker design? That's a win. Did you drink a glass of water that wasn't sugary coffee, tea, juice, or soda? Huge win. Acknowledge these tiny successes. They are the fuel for the big ones.

We are building complicated, multi-layered lives. It's supposed to feel messy sometimes. Let the chaos be your confirmation that you're doing the work.

Here’s My Big News (and Why It Matters): I Finished My Master’s 🎓

I’m grateful to share a milestone that’s been years in the making: I completed my Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership and have moved on to studying for my doctorate. For me, this isn’t just a credential—it’s proof that steady faith, focused work, and honest self-reflection can carry you through heavy seasons and into purpose.

What this degree means to me

Earning a graduate degree sharpened how I lead—clearer decisions, stronger ethics, better systems, and a deeper commitment to serve. It also opens doors. National data is plain: people with graduate degrees tend to have lower unemployment and higher earnings than those with less education. That matters in a shaky job market, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

My five-year career plan (the short version)

I’m building with intention. Here’s where I’m headed in the next five years:

A word to those recently laid off—especially my Black brothers and sisters

Right now, Black unemployment is rising. In August 2025, the jobless rate for Black Americans reached 7.5%, and long-term unemployment (27+ weeks) now makes up more than a quarter of all unemployment. That’s not a headline to fear—it’s a signal to pivot, skill up, and mobilize resources with strategy.

How to leverage a layoff (so it works for you):

Turn pain into positioning. Update your narrative: “Here’s the value I created, and here’s how I’ll create it again.”
Close skill gaps quickly. Short courses or certificates + strong project samples beat vague buzzwords. (Graduate study still pays off long-term—consider it if it aligns with your goals.)
Target resilient roles. Health care, social assistance, and operations/process roles keep hiring even in cool-downs. Watch the monthly BLS releases to aim where the openings grow.
Network with purpose. Ask for specific introductions and offer specific value. “Who do you know at X who needs Y? I can deliver Z this quarter.”
Build a side stream. Freelance what you already do well. Use it as a portfolio, a bridge, or your next business.
Track momentum weekly. Goals → outreach → interviews → follow-up. Treat your search like a project you manage.

When the economy cools, the people with sharpened skills, relevant projects, and proof of outcomes get picked first. The data backs it up, and I’ve lived it.

Faith. Fire. Finish: How I Turned Pain Into Purpose and Learning Into Leadership

I didn’t grow up around peace. I grew up around pain that spoke through relatives yelling and being threatening, slammed doors, aching heads and backs, and anxious mornings. I watched the women in my family carry burdens they didn’t have names for (R.I.P. mom, grandmoms, aunts, and great aunts)—until I gave them one. PMDD for those closest to me. Other names: Domestic trauma. Financial fear. Anxiety. I carry their legacy, but I don’t carry it the same way. I decided to use my voice, my pen, and eventually, a camera lens to help people process what they’ve lived through—because that’s what saved me.

In 1997, I gave my life to God, and everything changed. I didn’t come from a deeply spiritual family, so most didn’t expect me to get serious about my faith. Especially after surviving domestic violence in 1996, many figured I would move on quietly. But I didn’t. I drew closer to God through fasting, prayer, and time in the Word. I distanced myself from those who doubted my walk. I chose healing over pretending.

Even now, I get tired. Tired of the evil in this world. Tired of watching good people suffer while others play with power. But I keep going because I know I’m called. I know I’m not powerless. And I know the truth still matters. At the time of this writing, I dedicated 16 plus years delivering it on my channel, NM Enterprise 7 on YouTube.

I first saw the power of my voice as a child. I tried to talk sense into my friends and tattled on them when they didn’t listen. I wasn’t trying to be annoying—I just wanted peace. As I got older, people started to listen. By college, classmates thanked me for speaking up. Today, I use social media, YouTube, podcasts, and writing to test and share truth. Even family members who once doubted me now tell me to keep going. They might not always like what I say, but they respect that it comes from a place of wisdom and boldness.

My younger self would be proud of me. She’d be shocked, actually. That I went back to school, earned my degree, and now I’m working on my Master’s in Organizational Leadership (studies to be completed Aug. 2025). That I didn’t give up when life got hard again last year. That I didn’t let family issues pull me away from school like they did 20 years ago. She’d say, “Get that money like Grandma did it!”—but now I’m doing it with purpose.

I chose organizational leadership because I wanted to understand how businesses really run. I’ve always wanted to be my own boss. I didn’t just want to show up for work—I wanted to lead, manage, and build with integrity. My education is helping me do that.

I stay grounded with routines that feed my mind, body, and spirit. I write things down, use tech tools, and honor the structure I create for myself. I taught myself how to use AI tools (ResourceRundown), how to write and publish books, how to paint with acrylics, and how to research smarter. I’ve spent hours on YouTube growing in faith and mental strength. What I couldn’t afford in coaching, I learned through dedication.

My education hasn’t just helped me—it’s helped me serve others. I’ve supported small businesses and nonprofits, advised women about toxic relationships, and motivated people to go after their goals. Whether it's relocating, creating, or rebuilding something they thought was too far gone—I've encouraged people to believe again.

This is what I want to keep doing. Whether as a manager, consultant, or community leader, I want to keep turning truth into transformation. I want to keep choosing purpose, not just survival. And I’m committed to finishing what I started—not just for me, but for every woman and girl watching.

Embracing Change: Lessons from My Life of Relocation and Family Growth

Throughout my life, I've experienced the unique challenges and rewards that come from relocating frequently. My beginnings in Pennsylvania prepared me for moving to places like Colorado, California, and other wonderful states. Each move was not just a change of address; it was a necessary step to support my family, and it shaped my journey in profound ways. I matured mentally, and spiritually and learned along the way to encourage others who also want to spread their wings and fly!

Every new town brought with it a fresh opportunity to connect with local church members, attend community meetings, and support individuals and businesses. These connections became my lifeline. I learned to appreciate the power of community, understanding that each person I met had a story and a lesson to share. From a business owner who complimented how well-behaved my sons were to the manager of a popular grocery chain sharing how he knew from youth, it was his calling. Whether it was helping market a charity event or simply talking with a neighbor, these interactions enriched my life and deepened my understanding of the world around me.

For instance, in one community, I was fortunate to partner with local entrepreneurs, helping them craft compelling narratives for their businesses. This not only honed my writing skills but also taught me invaluable lessons about resilience and creativity in the face of adversity. Each experience reinforced my belief in the importance of supporting one another, especially in challenging times.

Striking a balance between family and business wasn't easy. There were times when the demands of work felt overwhelming, and I struggled to juggle deadlines with family commitments. However, these challenges have taught me the importance of prioritizing what truly matters especially during the pandemic.

With my children now older and pursuing their own passions, I've found a renewed sense of joy and freedom. Watching them chase their dreams reminds me of the sacrifices made along the way, and how those sacrifices have ultimately contributed to their growth. They have become independent thinkers and doers, and I am at peace knowing that our journey—as challenging as it sometimes was—has equipped them with the tools they need to walk their own paths.

As I reflect on my journey, I am filled with gratitude for the life lessons learned and the relationships formed. Each relocation has been a chapter that contributed to my personal and professional growth. The struggles of balancing family and work have paved the way for deeper connections and a richer appreciation for the present.

Now, as I stand at this new crossroads, graduating this year with a Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership, I celebrate not only my own achievements but also the milestones of my family. I am excited to support them as they pursue their passions, just as I did for them in their formative years. Together, we continue to grow, learn, and embrace the changes that life brings.

In the end, it's not the places we've lived that define us, but the relationships we've built and the lessons we've learned along the way. Here’s to the adventures yet to come, and the joy of sharing them with those we love.

NM Writing Journey and New Beginnings Completing Degree and New Career

Hello, everyone!

I decided to express my gratitude to all! These days, writing has not occupied a great part of my life, but other studies have been a big part. Back in 2024, I returned to a university in my hometown after a 25-year absence! I completed my bachelor of arts degree in multi-disciplinary studies the same year.

Before my return to school, for many years, I dedicated all my work to writing and speaking personally and professionally by expressing myself through many nonfiction books and speaking engagements while helping others with their family legacy projects and business support.

My freelance writing continues along with my fresh career path in 2025. As for now, I am in academic training to become an organizational leader. The path ahead brings me great enthusiasm because I plan to use my writing skills together with my leadership abilities to motivate others. I am deeply thankful to everyone who has backed me throughout the years. Your support through shares and likes together with your subscriptions has given me greater motivation than you can imagine!
