I fully understand that there are some who missed my appearance on The Journey Home, aired earlier this week on EWTN. Perhaps your cable provider doesn’t carry this channel. Or perhaps you were unable to tear away from prior engagements. Or perhaps, you’re like me… loathing any television program where it’s just two people talking, much preferring hearing the conversation in an audio format (i.e. podcasts), or watching on YouTube.

The good news is that the folks at this channel had gone out of their way to provide for you these resources, because they love you.

There have some very encouraging comments from those who have seen this episode.

“Nick, I recorded your appearance on The JH and just watched it. Your story is heart-warming. You’re a funny guy! I ordered one of your parody CDs.” – P.N.

“Ok, I watched Nick’s testimony. Nick, it was very moving.. and entertaining.” – B.L.

“I had been looking forward to seeing Nick Alexander‘s The Journey Home episode. Well worth the wait.” – J. M.

“Great talk. Loved the Scott Hahn story.” – A.V.

Another thing…. if you who are reading this are not a Catholic, but are aware of what I do, this is perhaps the fullest explanation as to why I decided to jump the Tiber. This is a story that hits upon both personal experiences and theological underpinnings that demonstrate how I inadvertently had ended up where I am today. At the end of the program I make it clear that there is “no pressure,” whatever happens, happens. But this is my story, and I’m honored to have shared it on such a high profile show.

Lastly, if you think you would want me to give a presentation at your church or event, feel free to stop on by the booking page. Thanks!

The post For Those Who Missed It… My Journey Home Appearance first appeared on Nick Alexander.

At Long Last

At long last, I will make a reappearance on national TV on September 19, 2022. That is when the long running The Journey Home series will have me as their guest. This is a show where converts to the Catholic faith share their stories. I follow a long tradition of intellectual theological giants and philanthropists, and, now that they’ve run out of such, they decided to ask me on to share my story.
Picture: that’s me on The Journey Home

These last nearly thirty years have had their ups and downs, whereas I had wanted a venue to share my story. At last it has come. Marcus Grodi, the original host, had just passed the torch to his son, JonMarc Grodi for interviewing duties.

First, They Flew Me In

They flew me in back in April. Their television studio is in the middle of a rural area in Ohio, where the Grodi family farms on the side. They had an incredible library indoors, filled with all sorts of theological books, both pro and anti-Catholic. I came with another former Episcopalian (actually a Charismatic Episcopalian, whereas I grew up Episcopalian in a parish with charismatic leanings), Fr. Randy Sly. He went first, which gave me time to gather my thoughts and try to salvage my poor sleep the night before.

The unique aspects of my testimony touch upon my upbringing, my positive experiences in the Christian groups I had participated in, and the tensions I felt with Mary, the Catholic doctrine of transubstantiation, and the issue of women in the priesthood. My own personal faith journey began when I was fourteen years old, which was the age of my children when I taped this broadcast, so it gave me a sense of empathy of what my own parents probably endured when I was discovering a deeper union with God being possible.

All in All

All in all, I think I did pretty good. Matt Swaim, who produces the show, said of my testimony “your taping was hilarious, heartfelt, endearing, and insightful, just as I’d hoped it would be! Can’t wait to share it in August.” Despite the month delay, it’s finally here. If you watch anything at all on September 19, make sure you watch The Journey Home as well.

As an aside, if you think that I might be a good speaker for your upcoming event, feel free to bring me in.

The post The Journey Home (EWTN): Why I Became Catholic first appeared on Nick Alexander.

Anybody want to read my Catholic testimony?

It’s been about a year since I last shared anything here. Like all things during this pandemic, I feel like I’ve been in suspended automation; no opportunities to perform, no interest in crafting new parody songs, no creation of videos. I didn’t even care about creating songs ABOUT the pandemic, as the humor was lost on me.

And yet, throughout these many months, I got a surprise invite to write my testimony, as to the journey I had undergone to become a Catholic.

I’ve told this story before, but from a website as prominent as The Coming Home Network (which broadcasts The Journey Home each week on EWTN), they had a number of stipulations that I had to go through. And part of that was to have some elements of apologetic nature, to explain how I came around to the Catholic way of thinking on a few select doctrinal issues.

This was also the first time in many years since I had shared my testimony, so much so that my own children are currently the age I was when I was first undergoing such milestone experiences that led to my conversion. I know I must have driven my parents crazy, but now I’m able to see it from a parents’ perspective, and it helped me garner sympathy for what they must have gone through, even though we are still very different.

Nonetheless, this was a very difficult writing assignment. It took me about six months, actually. But thankfully, I was able to hand them a draft, which they most likely spiffed up.

I honestly don’t know why they chose this picture to accompany my Catholic testimony.

If you have any interest why an overly zealous High School Bible Study president and partaker in all things in the New York City Evangelical culture would want to convert to Catholicism, the testimony is now available for reading. Enjoy.

And if you like the testimony, perhaps you can bring me in to share it to your parish or youth group. Or maybe some of my parody songs, which many were birthed from my experiences of my Catholic testimony, would be a help to you.

And now… on to the verbiage…

God’s grace guides us all. He doesn’t push people to do anything, but rather uses elements in that person’s own world and circumstance to open and close doors, providing guidance and wisdom.

I came to know Christ personally in 1984, when I was 14 years old. I had attended a summer youth retreat in New England, where I became convinced of the reality of the existence of a personal God. Afterwards, I returned home to an apartment in New York City, with a new reality before me, a newfound zeal.

My parents didn’t know how to relate to this…. To be Continued…

Recently I was invited to participate in the Catholic Vitamins Podcast by Deacon Tom Fox.

For those who don’t know, I am a Catholic convert. I was raised as an Episcopalian, and my journey encompasses many different aspects of the Christian walk, including dipping my toes in evangelical, interdenominational and charismatic expressions of faith. And yet I was inevitably drawn to the Catholic Church, and have never looked back.

Deacon Tom and I discussed my story at length. It brought back many fond memories and we had many laughs over the experience.

He also got to play some of my tracks from my comedy albums.

I encourage you to check out his podcast and give him any support.

I will be performing for school-aged youth and tweens in a number of performances in two weeks. What is exciting is that I hope to get some video footage of three new songs I had written.

The songs are:

Sloppy (Parody of The Shape of You by Ed Sheehan), which is about a kid having a messy room, too many toys, and his desire to donate some of them to a local Goodwill… the joke being that his toys are so bad, that he’s instead encouraged to throw them out.

Stamina (Parody of Havana by Camila Cabello and Young Thug): About a kid signing up for waaay too many extracurricular activities, and the aftermath of never being able to say “no.” He asks God for guidance, of course, but this is after the earlier disastrous repercussions.

My Own Broken Soul (Parody of Old Town Road by Lil Nas X feat. Billy Ray Cyrus): A teaching about loving God with our whole heart, soul, mind and strength (a teaching I love going back to, because it’s simple to share), but with emphasis on loving God with the soul, which, in Catholic tradition, applies to frequent reception of the Sacraments.

My talent is to take a strong look at the type of audience I am addressing, the songs they may be familiar with, and a message they may need to hear, and finding a means to communicate all three using humor and songcraft. My Powerpoints provide lyrics for singalongs, along with images that make the stories pop.

If you will be near Allentown, PA, the concerts will be in nearby Orefield, on Nov 12 and 13. Hope to see you there!

The post Where I’m At: November 01, 2019 at 04:59AM first appeared on Nick Alexander.
