After buying a pallet and a half of secondhand books in February 2020 our initial idea was to open up a new shop space in Valencia selling affordable secondhand English books and also some of the best craft beer from around the world. But then as we all know, the pandemic hit.

We reassessed, decided it wasn’t the best time to rent a physical shop space in the current climate and opted to go online only to begin with. So we’ve spent the last year, cataloguing a couple of thousand books, taking many many photos, uploading the stock to the website and then creating the website. A momentous number of hours were put into that and we’re so pleased to finally be able to offer our affordable secondhand English books and craft beer in Valencia and across Spain.

We still plan to open up a physical store in Valencia when the time is right but for now you’ll find all our stock online at shakesbeer.es. The books are all on there and we’re adding more all the time. The craft beer will follow shortly and we’re very excited about that too 🙂

Also on the agenda are a number of popup stores across the region, both in the city of Valencia and the Valencian region.

I have been working with Farmison & Co for over 2 years now, initially maintaining the front end development additions to their then current site as well as updates to the WordPress community site they also have.

Since then the company has progressed, moving into new premises, merging the online sales and butchery into one central hub. With that development it was decided to improve the look and feel of the website. Being the main income for the company it was vitally important that it was easy for customers to buy from.

Along with Gary Hartley (The Floating Frog) creating a stripped back design that makes the most of the great stock of images they hold of their meat and my front end development to make sure the designs come to life and respond well on tablet/mobile devices, Farmison & Co have created a great website that shows off their produce to the best of its ability.

A lot of the leg work is undoubtedly down to the in-house back end development team and Lee and John themselves for making the site what it is with their vision, but it’s great to be a part of the team that has created this website which has now won this award 🙂

You can see which images are attached to that post by opening up the media window, going to the ‘Media Library’ tab and changing the dropdown to ‘Uploaded to this post’.

You can then use WordPress’ built in image gallery to embed all those images in a gallery should you wish, using the ‘Create Gallery’ link on the left of the media popup.

However if you want to have a bit of control over the layout of that gallery you can opt to pull out all image attached to that post and display them using the HTML you wish around it.

Below is a function you can add to functions.php and then call in your template.

Once that is added to functions.php you can simply add the following PHP to your template to display all the images, giving the image size you wish to use (e.g. large, medium, thumbnail, full etc).

After-Sales Support

As with any of our services, having a quick way for you to contact us should you have any queries is priority. So we’re always available during the process of your order or afterwards via the contact form or live chat also.

For example if you had an estate agency and wanted to link all posts from specific agents it wouldn’t quite look right.

Below is a simple function you can add to your site in the functions.php file or wherever to change the base of your authors to something else.

In the example I have changed it to ‘agents’ and this will cause the new URL on the site to follow the format: domain.com/agent/agent-name/.

Here is a simple function that can be added to functions.php to add a telephone number, Skype username, Twitter username and Facebook name to your user details page.

It also lets you remove any details from there also. In the example I have chosen to remove Yahoo IM, Yabber and AIM options.

Once that is added these extra details should appear in your contact details section when you edit a user.

Now to use that information on the front end of the site you can simply call WordPress’ get_user_meta() function to display the value added.

So something like:

Using the get_bloginfo(‘description’); function will pull that out, but it turns any HTML tags into HTML entities. A quick fix for that problem is to run it through a PHP function as well when you call it and the HTML tags will be used.
