Nick,
The tone of your original blog on this issue seemed very frustrated and angry. This seems to be a trend among many pastors. You guys are seeing a lot of messy Christians and you are frustrated and burned out. That seems to be a theme lately in American Christian circles. I feel for you, it is a tough job, and I mean that.

So, I get your points about Christians acting poorly in these type of situations. However, not all are doing so. You stated in that original post that the Christian outrage was based solely on Chik Fil A's motives and not on verifiable facts. But some of us are finding facts and have been trying to provide some about Covenant House. Thus, not all objection to Chik Fil A's actions have been based on judging their motives. We feel that, by adopting Covenant House, Chik Fil A has changed significantly, and is misleading people when they say that nothing has changed, they are the same old Chik Fil A. The facts cut against them. That's how we feel.

To underscore my point, I sent an email to my local operator. He gave me the same response, "Nothing has changed. We are the same old Chik Fil A." He told me that they now support youth homelessness, poverty and education groups, and that if I didn't like that, we'll have to "agree to disagree." But he didn't tell me who the groups are. He just said they have a great new giving emphasis, and that all the reports about this issue were based on "ridiculous, inaccurate and sensationalist" articles and that I need to "filter" what news sources I use. I felt his response was smarmy for sure, and, to top it all off, he didn't tell me which groups they now support. I asked him, but he has never responded. I had to find that out myself. I sent him the information on Covenant House but he hasn't responded to that either.

I"m very concerned for you pastors. There seems to be a groundswell of anger and bitterness against so-called Christians in your pews (or chairs, or whatever). I see more and more pastors linking to articles about pastor burnout, struggles of pastors, all the things people don't understand about pastors, why pastors and their families can't be close to people, and on and on. I suspect that much of your frustration with the Chik Fil A issue is based on context, in that you see complainers, manipulators and anger all the time from your church members, and you don't buy their "outrage" anymore. The danger, of course, is that you pastor are subject to falling down the same hole that the crazy members have fallen into. Bitterness, unforgiveness, anger, frustration. It's all from the same enemy, tempting us all to go that route. I pray that you'll find it in you (through the Spirit that is in you) to forgive all the crazy Christians out there and to be healed in your heart. We'll pray for you, and for the church as a whole. These are trying times.

Additional information:

1. I've discovered that the Covenant House started as a Catholic organization, but is not now. hey are not funded by the Catholic church, nor do they have any religious affiliation.

2. I believe the article I linked in my previous post shows the history of CFA's change over the past decade, information that most people don't know about. I've linked it here again.

In reply to <a href="http://www.nickcarnes.com/the-bigger-problem-with-chick-fil-a/comment-page-1/#comment-175408">JP</a>.

JP — No, I have not retracted or changed my view or statements from my previous article. In fact, I have addressed many of the issues you raise in this post and will not revisit all of those responses, they are in the comment section of my previous post. This post is rather clear and is directly associated with how those Christians who are outraged are ruining their own testimony, and not following the gospel or scripture when it comes to conflict. You sound and seem to be fair in your reply, but that has not been the norm on social media. I have not changed my position. This article is written in a way to point out, or to understand, some of the rationale and the justification being used for such "anti-Biblical" reactions to Chick-fil-A, from Christians. As I said in the previous article, time will tell if I am wrong. I have clearly shared in the comments why I am not as surprised that CFA did not renew their agreement with TSA, and why there is no need for outrage, to be fair. The TSA does some of the same practices as Covenant (a Catholic charity, not secular), but less publicly. Unless everyone is going to offer the same treatment towards the TSA, as they have CFA, they, in my opinion, lose credibility. The TSA takes government funding for their social services wing of the organization, and therefore has to fully comply with all LGBTQ+ requirements on services and hiring, unlike the standard Christian church, who can hire staff that fully align with their values and doctrines, and can base their services and programs around those same values and doctrines. The TSA publicly share their doctrine statement affirming traditional marriage, while doing the opposite for government money. That is no different than what people are accusing CFA of. Claiming values that support traditional marriage, but giving money to a charity that supports LGBTQ+ individuals.

Yup! Thanks for sharing your thoughts with the world. Great insight and love for people. I heard a true story the other day of a lady at a local CFA complaining and yelling to an employee about how she had been shorted a few nugs in her catered nugget tray order. Long story short, after a few attempts to graciously resolve the situation, the unrelenting customer who had been deeply offended by this nugget counting oversight continued to express her deep offense. The owner boldly told the customer, “ma’am it’s just chicken.”

We have started applying this to other areas in our own family when we start to complain or grumble about something that’s not really a big deal. “It’s just chicken. It’s all just chicken.”

I can't tell from the blog if you are now acknowledging the truth about what Chik Fil A has done. This is not an attach on you, I just can't tell what you now know or acknowledge.

Here's my thoughts: Before anything else, the facts need to be reported. Based on comments to your previous post, and this one, it is apparent than many people don't know even the basics of the Chik Fil A controversy. The first thing people need to know is that The Covenant House, a new recipient of CFA donations in lieu of the Salvation Army and FCA, is a secular youth homeless/poverty organization than accepts and CELEBRATES the LGBTQ lifestyle.

Here is a quote from their website. This is what Chick-fil-A supports instead of the Salvation Army:

“Clearly, LGBTQ young people need adults to work harder to keep them safe, housed, and not just accepted, but celebrated, for who they are. . . . At Covenant House, we are proud to have worked with the True Colors Fund and its founder, Cyndi Lauper to ensure that our shelters and staff members are as welcoming as possible to sexual minority youth, and Covenant House California is honored to have received a $200,000 grant to enhance our services to LGBTQ young people."

Covenant House promotes LGBTQ on its website, referring to “LGBTQ Inclusion Initiatives.”
https://www.covenanthouse.org/…/lgbtq-inclusion-assessment-…. See also https://www.covenanthouse.org/homeless…/lgbtq-homeless-youth.

Covenant House also supports the New York City Gay Pride parade with a float, banners, t-shirts, and hastag #CovUnity. https://www.covenanthouse.org/charity-b…/…/celebrating-pride.

Covenant House is recognized as a national funder of LGBTQ causes. See https://lgbtfunders.org/covenant-house/.

Chik Fil A has gone from supporting groups that uphold centuries-old biblical values on sex and marriage, to supporting groups that are promoting and CELEBRATING LGBTQ lifestyles for TEENAGERS.

Here's another link to a good article of facts. It will give you some history on what's has been going on with the Chik Fil A Foundation over the past decade or so. It is not pretty from a biblical, Christian perspective. It is incredible that Chik Fil A has maintained this week that they are the same old Chik Fil A that supports Christian values.

The second comment I saw by Charles at 1:11pm made your point. He cited a Bisnow online article in which he indicated a Chic-fit-a exec was quoted stating they were changing charities due to pressure. The only problem is, this article DOES NOT contain that at all! There is a lot of editorializing in that direction, but the direct quotes DO NOT say that. In fact, 2/3 into the article is this statement,
“ The company still maintains the donations were made for reasons completely unrelated to the organizations’ stance on LGBT issues. “
