Fish in a Barrel: Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds on Tour (1992)

This wonderful photo of Nick Cave and Mick Harvey is by photographer Peter Milne, who created a book of priceless images from the Bad Seeds' 1992 Tour. It is still available if you look through used booksellers such as alibris. I chose this photo of the two friends having a blast for a reason. Word from Those In The Know: Mick Harvey has left the Bad Seeds amicably. The strain of travel and the wish to spend more time with his family are the reasons I've been given. I hope this bit of news helps to ease the concerns of those upset by his departure.

Since this blog is about Nick Cave, who is a Melbourne fella, and since Melbourne Deb is among our many dear friends from the region, I think it is timely and proper for us to post a public expression of sympathy. According to your beliefs, please join me in offering prayers, meditations, and healing energies for the victims and survivors of the Victoria Bush Fires.

Australia bush fires: Death toll passes 100
The Telegraph UK, 08 February 2009

The infernos, which started on Saturday in a period of record temperatures, destroyed at least 750 homes as they burned through 350,000 hectares of towns and farmland in the state of Victoria in a day and night already dubbed “Black Saturday”. Entire towns have been wiped off the map, with aerial images of the region showing an eerie moonscape of blackened earth and collapsed homes where fields and communities used to stand.

Most of the damage was done by two massive fires - one that virtually wiped out towns northeast of Melbourne including Kinglake and Marysville with a 60-mile front - and a second inferno that raced across Gippsland. Burnt-out cars were strewn across the road outside Kinglake, testimony to residents who made doomed attempts to escape.

The fires began on the hottest day ever recorded in Melbourne and were fanned by gale-force winds. Many of the dead were said to have waited too long in their homes before fleeing and were burnt alive in their cars as multiple fires tore through the countryside of Victoria state. Some of the blazes were set by arsonists.

Witnesses said the sky had turned to ash, began to rain embers and the fires which obliterated entire houses in seconds had turned parts of the picturesque Victorian countryside into something resembling a nuclear holocaust.

Nick Cave and Suicide

The legendary band, that is. Footage of Grinderman and Suicide at The Forum in London (from June 20, 2007) has just shown up on YouTube. As an uber-huge Suicide fan (as opposed to ultra-mega-uber-huge Nick fan) this gives me shivers, however short the clip may be. Please be sure to note Mr. Cave's ever-amazing dance moves during "Touch Me" here.

Footage of Grinderman performing "Mr. Ray" is also up.

As you Fixers are undoubtedly aware, a special 7" vinyl single of Grinderman covering a Suicide song is due out (sometime) as part of a Suicide singles release series. Any word on Nick's contribution? Seems I've been waiting so long...

Hello Nick Fixers,
Although Nick Cave Fixes is officially on hiatus for the time being, Morgan has given me the go-ahead to post Fixes. I think after a rather heavy week, we can all use a little eye candy, courtesy of the April 4, 1996 issue of German Rolling Stone. These are some rarely-seen (at least online!) pics and alternate takes.

Please, feel free to keep posting comments and links, Fixes, tidbits and opinions in the comments section. This is the Nick Fixes community! :)

Dear Friends,

One reason that I was so shocked by Mick Harvey's departure from the Bad Seeds is that it eerily coincides with decisions I'm facing in my private life.

In view of chronic health concerns, I must put Nick Cave Fixes on hiatus, for an indefinite period. I simply don't have the energy to keep up with the work.

Please know that I will keep you abreast of changes or developments in the staffing of Nick Cave Fixes. Meanwhile, thank you for visiting and for leaving your mark for others to find. It's been a wonderful year, all the way around.

I leave with a video dedication, to Deb, Marianne, Jill, Laura, Maddy, Jutka, Caroline, & Val, who are the best friends I've ever known, and to the two guys in the photo, who I love more than mere words could ever express.

Breaking news: Mick Harvey, long-time friend of Nick Cave, and founding member of The Bad Seeds, has announced he is quitting the band. In so doing, he joins the ranks of former Bad Seed Blixa Bargeld, who quit in March 2003, as the last of the original, founding members, of Nick Cave & Bad Seeds. An era had ended. Nick Cave is now left to carry on alone. We wish Mick Harvey well and offer him a heart-felt 'thank you' for the 25 years he devoted to the band.

Here is good article about Nick Cave's upcoming second novel, The Death of Bunny Munroe, which is finished and set for release in mid-2009 by Canongate (translation rights are being secured now). Nick says he wrote most of the novel on the tour bus and "it was an absolute joy to write this thing".

"It's kind of what I do naturally. Something that is very natural to me is to sit down and write. I don't have any kind of psychological obstacles in the way, as I do when for example I'm writing a song. Writing a song is excruciating, really difficult and way more challenging on every level … So to write prose I am freed of a lot of constraints I battle against to write a song.

"And there was also the feeling that it didn't really matter. If it turns out to be a pile of shit it didn't matter because I'm not going to live or die by whether this book is any good. So I felt hugely free about what I wrote."

Concert Reviews:

Nick Cave, reskinned and running hot

Adelaide Now (15 Jan 09) reviews the 14 Jan show at Thebarton Theater. The reviewer writes that Nick 'running hot', still cool, but the band appears a 'bit bored' with the older hits, notably Ship Song, Mercy Seat, and Red Right Hand. This meshes with something I noticed at the LSO St. Luke's show last July. It must be a challenge to keep the sound fresh with a back catalog the size of Nick Cave's. Curious to know how you fans feel about it? When a band's entire musical direction changes, as Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds did with Abattoir Blues/Lyre of Orpheus, is it reasonable to expect them to continue performing the older songs indefinitely? Thoughts?

Here's an anecdote about the concert from our friend, Melbourne Deb, who said Nicky was so hot that she had to put two bottles of ice water in her bra!

"you know his audience just loves him. the band comes on first to applause, and then nick steps out and the whole place just erupts with claps and everyone has their arms in the air, out stretched and clapping, for their hometown boy is back and they love him so. it is like a collective embrace, we are all reaching out to our saviour. after every song the same thing happens, the clapping and the roar, the whistles, and the screams (me included, screaming out whoa, after each song). he always gives us two hrs of performance. it must be a special home town treat i think, without him being sycophantic."

Deb confided that Nick's 'SMD' directive in the Stagger Lee show closer drove the hometown ladies wild. Says Deb: "i was thinking, hang on, i’m coming…"

Woo-hooo. Thanks, Deb, sounds like a helluva show. ;)

CONCERT REVIEW:

Is he a belligerent egoist, accomplished provocateur or gifted artist? Or all of the above?

At home in Melbourne on Tuesday with his hirsute band the Bad Seeds for the first of two nights at the Palace Theatre, Cave arrived on stage already triumphant, with both arms in the air, fists clenched. Self-confidence has never been an issue.

Cave, who says he doesn't like festivals as a rule, says Australia's inaugural ATP promises to be a blinder. "I'm very much looking forward to it. I'm kind of hoping that there'll be a lot of interaction between the bands, that people in different bands feel that they can get up with other people," he says.

"You hope for these things but it depends on the atmosphere. If we can have a relaxed atmosphere about it, and non-competitive atmosphere, then maybe.

"At some festivals there's definitely a feeling among the bands of who's going to blow who off the stage. That's one of the reasons I've never particularly liked playing festivals. Now we've got this band Grinderman, who seems to be playing a lot of festivals … and consequently blowing everyone off stage..."

It's that relaxed attitude, along with the restriction of ticket sales to 6000 and the unusual venue (for Victoria, at least), that differentiates ATP from the summer's big festivals...

So do Cave and Harvey expect an older crowd?

“Yes, there’ll be drunken old people, which is even worse than drunken young people,” Cave says. “I hope young people come, actually. Lately the Bad Seeds certainly are attracting a whole young crowd.”

This 3 part video interview/documentary "A Short Film" was broadcast on Rage TV Australia, 20/06/98, according to Nick Cave Collector's Hell. However, Part I is footage taken from "Stranger In A Strange Land", a documentary made for Dutch VPRO TV by Bram van Splunteren, between February and March 1987 in Berlin, filmed in in Dresdenerstrasse 11, where Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds rehearsed, and at Hansa Ton Studios, and at the Berlin Metropol on 15 February 1987. The Dutch TV footage is brilliant and part 2 and 3 include great interviews with Nick Cave, Mick Harvey, and Blixa Bargeld and Nick performing with PJ and Kylie. Enjoy. Thanks again to Prick Mayall for uploading and sharing!

St. Nick's Christmas Gift to a Lifelong Fan

Melbourne native Debra Mineely has been a Nick Cave fan since the Boys Next Door regularly played at local venues like Crystal Ballroom and the Tiger Lounge. After thirty years of devotion to her very special "boy next door", Deb decided to write and tell Nick how much he and his music have meant to her all of this time. A mutual acquaintance kindly agreed to bring two of Deb's prized Nick Cave books to be signed by the author. Deb slipped her letter inside even though she was told not to expect anything more than a signature. Well, St. Nick surprised everyone, especially Debra, by reading her letter and responding with a note of acknowledgement. The acquaintance told Deb that Nick smiled when asked what was in the letter, and said, "It was very nice".

Debra's Story, as told to Morgan Wolf:

MW: You and I are friends, so I know that you are a longtime Nick Cave fan. We've shared a lot of emotion together, and I think it would be great for the newer fans, the younger fans, to hear about what it's been like loving Nick Cave, through all of it, for three decades.

DM: I first saw Nick Cave in 1978 and knew right away there was something very different about him, an aura, a look, and the eyes – the most beautiful blue I have ever seen. For 30 years I have followed this man. I have seen him go from a shy young boy to a confident man of the world. Proud father, incessant performer, author, the list goes on. I cannot help but feel my heart swell with pride when I see him on stage and think of his success. I have seen him live countless times. His performances are something to behold. His energy and sexiness are relentless. I sometimes wonder what I would have done without him and his music in my life. My daughter has listened to him in utero and all her life – hey, she had no choice. She jokingly tells me that she has been 'scarred' by him. She loves to stir me up.

MW: Why did you feel it was important to write this letter to Nick now, after all these years?

DM: I just had to tell Nick "thank you for thirty years of music." I guess I wanted Nick to know that I had "walked" with him through his life and he never knew I existed. At the same time he has been a golden thread thru out my life. I think it is important to say thank you, not only to Nick but to all people, and for all things. I still can't believe I have been listening to him for so long; doesn't seem like it. When I see him, I still see the young man I did in 1978. It is a hard thing to try and describe. (I put something similar in the letter as well). I see him as he is now but in my head I can see him in all his different incarnations. I don't pretend to like everything the man does. Sometimes I catch on even years later!! I just think I am not ready to receive some songs and sometimes I just don't like them and you know what, I don't have to like them either. I do manage to get hooked on the most lovely of his songs: Nobodys Baby Now, Idiot Prayer, Your Funeral My Trial, Straight To You, The Carny, Cassiel, Grief Came Riding, Lovely Creature, and Loom of the Land, to name but a few.

MW: You've said you turned off of Nick's music with The Birthday Party. Can you talk about the violence? How long before you reconnected?

DM: The Birthday Party were a very very different band to the Boys Next Door. BND were a much more danceable band (insert getting pissed and dancing your arse off here). I didn't like the TBP because I couldn't dance to them and then they left for the UK. What was filtering back (bear in mind only print media and taking a while to reach oz shores also) was a very different band in the form of the TBP. It was a shock. I couldn't even understand what he was singing. Still a beautiful man of course and I still held my torch. I just left him musically. People throwing bottles and grabbing at him all drunk and drugged. It wasn't a place I wanted to be. Scary. I was scared. Maybe because I was young I couldn't see where it was all going. Hey I wanted to dance and that wasn't dancing music! Thrown in with this was Nick's own drug use and my fear that one day his demise would be front page news. I am much more appreciative of it now.

MW: So what about after TBP?

DM: I saw him with what must have been the "Cave Men" tour with Hugo Race but in OZ terms it was Nick's gig with Hugo on guitar! The Singer and Tupelo reeled me in, and when I saw Blixa in the Tupelo vid I nearly fainted.

MW: Well, we have something in common there! [Laughter across the miles!]

MW: Were there periods in your life when you listened more closely to Nick Cave's music?

DM: I identified a lot with Henry's Dream. Knowing that he had become a father and I was a mother. I guess I wanted to hear the "new parent" Nick. I remember playing "Janglin' Jack" in the car and my daughter (prolly aged 10 or so) said "did he just say yackety yak?" I said "don't be silly. He wouldn't write a lyric like that". So I listened again and yep, it sure was "yackety yak". Oh why did I doubt her? It is still something she brings up to me to this day.

MW: Nick is on his second novel, and he's getting older. How would you feel if he quit to become a full time author after being a fan of his music for so long?

DM: I don't think I would care if he stopped making music. Still have plenty to go on with. It would be enough for me to know that he is happy and doing what he feels he needs and wants to do. I make no demands upon him. I gratefully accept what he has to offer. His gift.

MW: What does Nick Cave mean to you, now?

DM: It's hard to say what he means to me now. He is a constant thing. He is a husband and father. I am happy if he is happy. If he chose to give it all up I would respect that and say nothing of it. His decision. He knows what is best for him. I would never expect him to keep going for the 'fans'. I would always be interested to know what he is up to. I know that he has always given 100% artistically and performance wise.

MW: What did you most enjoy including in your letter to Nick?

DM: I told Nick that my favorite song is "Nobodys Baby Now" with "the blue quilted violets across the breast" - I picture that special detail in my mind everytime I hear it. I cannot help but smile and feel proud of [Nick's] success when I see [him] perform.

MW: How does it feel to have finally reached Nick Cave after three decades?

DM: This morning, I thought, "I have been reading that bastard's words for 30 years, now I made him read mine!"

On that well-salted bit of Melbourne humor, we concluded our interview.
