Contrary to popular memes, I have nothing but fond memories of Mr Volk, or Noel as he preferred I called him in 2005.

Mr Volk was one of those highly influential people in my life. He was one of a small handful of people made an impact on my persona, from an intellectual perspective. A learned man, he daily demonstrated that geeky people mattered in the world. A great man.

Ave, Mr Volk. Noel.

Thoughts are with the Volk family.

The jobs we wanted were filled with the vast hordes of babyboomers: still in the workforce, protected by strict employment laws.

Generation Y, the topic of many ‘social networking’ [eyeballs, and therefore marketing-types] are entering a world were jobs are more plentiful; and will continue to choose their own jobs.

A downside is a tax burden they will have keeping the older generation

There are many social impacts with these changes.

One concern us Generation Xers have with online personas and profiles is the impact of potential negative pictures and posts being used by potential employers. In the future, the power will lie in the hands of the employees.

Possibly Related Posts:

Microsoft, and the world, is a funny old place.

Possibly Related Posts:

After a mysql_query with an INSERT statement, a quick call to mysql_insert_id provides the ID of the last inserted row.

$lastRow = mysql_insert_id($link);

SQL Server Driver PHP commands compared with MySQL PHP commands

Over the years I have used the inbuilt PHP drivers for MySQL. The best mechanism for mapping the two methods is a simple table laying out a comparison between the two systems.

Note this is not a SQLServer vs. MySQL argument, just for information and reference.

As the SQLServer drivers change, I will update this page.

Note:

sqlsrv_client_info( )

DriverDllName: SQLNCLI.DLL DriverODBCVer: 03.52 DriverVer: 09.00.3042 ExtensionVer: 1.0.1015.0

Description

SQLServer Driver for PHP

MySQL Functions

Begins a transaction

sqlsrv_begin_transaction( resource $conn )

START TRANSACTION, BEGIN, COMMIT, ROLLBACK can be executed as statements in mysql_query

Cancels a statement; discards any pending results for the statement

sqlsrv_cancel( resource $stmt )

-

Provides information about the client

sqlsrv_client_info( resource $conn )

mysql_get_client_info ( void )

Closes a connection.
Vista as my PHP Developer Workstation

Prior to joining Microsoft, I always setup my Windows laptop as a PHP/Apache development workstation. Having created my own content management system in PHP (and who hasn’t!) – having a remote development copy is critical.

Over the last few weeks, I have installed the following onto my Vista Ultimate 64-bit laptop and home workstation:

install IIS7 web server, with the CGI support (note: a version of IIS7 supplied with Vista SP1)

Install Thread-safe PHP from http://windows.php.net/downloads.php

Using the IIS Manager, and module remap .php extensions to the

Install php_sqlsrv<strike>_ts</strike>.dll which is a part of the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Driver for PHP, modify the php.ini to launch/activate the extension [see comments below]

The following change in the php.ini is also important in an IIS installation

; Set to 1 if running under IIS. Default is zero.
; fastcgi.impersonate = 1;

Restart the IIS

Reading the http://forums.iis.net/ I also updated FastCGI (fixes REQUEST_URI)

Development Environments

Last week, the SQLServer 2008 Express team released a download with the SQL Server Management Studio. A few weeks ago, I blogged how to export/import the .sql from one system to another.

Having installed the Management Studio, I noticed that I could import data into my new SQLServer database:

Having previously installed the MySQL .Net connector, all I had to do was fill in the blanks. Server (with remote access enabled), database, username and password.

The tricky part is mapping MySQL datatypes to SQLServer datatypes, and importing. Note that with a non-Express version of SQL Server Management Studio, you can save the schemas and automate the import.

Download it and give it a whirl!

Thanks to our resident Hosting Geek: Jorke, I have an internet-facing Windows 2008 / IIS7 web site.

Yes, Jorke is a brave man.

After logging in via Remote Desktop and changing my password, it is off and away on this funny experience with Windows IIS hosting.

For the record, historically I have always developed/tested my PHP/MySQL sites on Windows: from 2000, via XP and now on Vista, I would install Apache, PHP and MySQL to provide a mirror to the eventual “web hosted” server in the cloud.

First step is to install SQLServer 2008: Express onto the server.

Second step, to ensure that FastCGI PHP is running. Thanks to the support of FastCGI in IIS7, this took a minute at most:

Thirdly, as I plan to use the open source Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Driver for PHP, installing the extension: php_sqlsrv.dll and wiring this to launch in php.ini (one line addition)

After testing with php_info(); , I can see I have a working internet-facing server install.

Now onward towards php.

MySQL to SQLServer [Express] 2008

Being a historical LAMP guy, the first problem is how do I get my data across?

The release of free SQLServer Express 2008, with the integration with Vista x64, PHP and Visual Studio is an attractive proposition. But: schema and data first.

1. Using PHPMyAdmin, I exported the tables as SQL; and specifically ANSI SQL:

2. Edit the SQL

This is the ugly part. There were four main changes:

Change syntax of the CREATE TABLE to place tables inside the correct namespace (eg: database.dbo.table) and a (ouch) find and replace on INSERTS

Changing the syntax of the PRIMARY KEY

Adding SQLServer Transact SQL (T-SQL) 'go' statements after the table creation and insertion blocks

Changing the column types to match SQLServer types

3. SQLCMD

SQLCMD is the command line interface to your SQLServer instance.

Simply typing SQLCMD –S MAJORSTAR\SQLExpress -E -i export.sql

Where SQLExpress is the instance on a machine called MAJORSTAR, -E to login with my current credentials and -i to run the export.sql file.

With further research, the -d (to set db name) and other like tweaking, the amount of editing as completed in step 2 could have been avoided.

In a few short steps, I had imported my schema and data into SQLServer Express 2008

I LOL everytime I see “M$”

I remember the days when one used the dollar-sign to denote the variable as a string type:

M$ = "Microsoft"

or in other words, the variable M is a string of value “Microsoft”

Thankfully, most modern languages (even those from Microsoft) no longer use this programming language mnemonic (or what is formally known as postfix sigils)

I LOL AT UR L4M3 POSTFIX SIGIL

30 minutes of Good Barry

Managing a micro-business online, or offline, usually involves paperwork. Lots of it. From customer enquiries to invoicing, the tracking of your biggest concern: the customer, is a tough task.

Shouldn’t computers and the internet make business easier?

You could just create a blog. Then add an email follow up system. Then another customer birthday card system. Very soon you are moving your data across too many diverse systems.

GoodBarry, a winner of the Transaction 2.0 "Best Aussie Business Startup" at last week’s CeBIT conference in Sydney, is the perfect answer.

Recently highlighted for their innovative marketing, in this video interview we see an in depth demonstration of GoodBarry.

Did they have Geek gadgets. Oh, yes they did!

Telephones, typewriters, calculators: all blossomed through the 19th Century.

The screen capture is of a unique device called a Curta Calculator. Invented by Curt Herzstark, a survivor of Buchenwald, it looks like a pepper-grinder but is in fact a small calculator.

They sure did.

Matthew Connell from The Powerhouse Museum introduced me to a William Stanley Jevons. A true geek of the 19th Century.

Who is Jevons?

He lived at the same time as Babbage, and invented the Logic Piano amongst many other geeky things. An early amateur photographer, he photographed an early Australia with an unique eye.

Email to the Future

Social networks are not new. Humans throughout our existence communicate, connect and correspond with like minded humans.

Written documents are the evidence trail that historians and museum curators, such as Matthew Connell from Sydney’s Powerhouse Musuem, use to decipher the lives of famous people.

To aid future historians, it is important that this digital generation store our correspondence. The Powerhouse Museum and Ninemsn Australia joined forces in a project called Email Australia.

In this episode of The Geek Stories, I trek into the archives of the Powerhouse Museum and see documents exchanged between Lady Ada Lovelace, Charles Babbage and a Brunel.

Their correspondence illustrates why we must email the future. The social networks of now must not be fleeting, otherwise our history is lost.

Support Your Local Barcamp

Barcamp? What is a Barcamp? Does it involve sleeping in a cocktail bar?

From Wikipedia, a Barcamp is an international network of user-generated conferences. Taking a tongue-in-cheek name from an invitation Foocamp , Barcamp is purposely open, relatively unorganised and, well, funner.

Generally, a group of un-organisers initiates a date, time, location for a Barcamp, and opens registration for all. No formal sessions are planned prior to the unconference.

People turn up and nominate what they would like to talk about. Attendees either watch, or not watch. But these attendees are not idle watchers. Most presenters invite questions, and many offline conversations take place.

If you are a parent of a geek-age daughter or son: take them along too. Barcamp attendees and presenters do not have an upper or lower age limit. A Barcamp is an excellent community of supportive geeks.

Having attended and sponsored (as Microsoft) a variety of Australian Barcamps, the vibe of the conference is relaxed with a sense of free intellectual exchange. In Australia, the attendees span the Open source world, Ruby on Rails crowd, Venture capitalists, Information architects and general geeks.

Support your local Barcamp. Attend, and more importantly, participate.

GoodBarry, a Web 2.0 company and their application GoodBusiness fills that need to deal with the boring administration and sales stuff as you have fun making cool things online.

Rather than traditional marketing with boring brochures and long videos of CEOs extolling the virtues of GoodBarry: Brett Welch has followed in the lead of the Windows Home Server team: write a story book.

Not any story book: this one is filled with internet memes and mega epic lulz4all.

In contrast, the Windows Home Server team took a more motherhood and apple pie approach in "Mommy, Why is there a Server in the House?"
