Perceptualization vs. Visualization

Visualization is the art of seeing in your mind what it is you would like to create. The problem I have with the term is that it only incorporates one of our senses. Being creatures of perception, I feel it more appropriate to call it perceptualization which is the perception of what we want using one or all of our senses.

Our minds cannot tell the difference between what we are actually experiencing and what we are perceiving. A magician’s slight of hand is as efficient as it is because our eyes don’t always seethe trick. Virtual roller coasters work well, because of our sense of movement.

Not all people are visual. Some people create using their sense of hearing, others use their sense of touch or feeling. For this reason I feel that if one can perceive their goal in their mind using one or all of their senses, they can attain it.

My challenge is this; instead of using a vision board which uses one of your senses, Create a perception board which incorporates all of your senses. If you can, find ways to plug in things that involve your sight, hearing, taste, smell, touch and the often forgotten sixth sense; your extra sensory perception. This sixth sense can often be the “how to” of obtaining the goals you have in mind.

Don’t Confuse Feedback With Perspective

Feedback is merely information that comes about as a result of a process. Perception is the minds interpretation of that information. Oft times this perception is shared in the form of an opinion which is essentially a person’s judgment and usually lacks complete certainty; it is their personal view on that information. People have a tendency to think that their personal view is the actuality of a situation. Feedback is the accurate outcome; it is the data and is usually accurate as long as the information being used to create the data is correct.

When a person has no money in their bank account, they may create a story around that of all the reasons why it is the way it is. Perception and opinion allow them to create judgments or blame the results on something other than themselves. The outcome is an empty account, the story is the dot, dot, dot that follows. People present their perspectives and opinions as though they are fact when in actuality, those opinions are merely their version of fact. Feedback is not perception or opinion; it is only the data or outcome of one’s decision.

Are you presenting your opinion as feedback?

Do you feel that your perspective is that true data?

Ask yourself these questions. Find out what is actually happening. What choices are leading to the outcomes and if those results aren’t working for you, make new choices.

When coaching a person, I attempt in every case to remember that his or her change is entirely up to them as is mine. I cannot change people; they must do it for themselves. All I can do is live the best I can, teach what I’ve learned and done for myself and allow them to choose whether they will do the same.

I don’t have the power to change someone’s life; that power is within them. The power I hold is to inspire.
