The BALANCE-UNBALANCE conference will seek to bring artists together with scientists, economists, philosophers, politicians, sociologists, engineers, management and policy experts with the intent of engendering a deeper awareness and creating lasting intellectual working partnerships in solving our global environmental crisis.

Using art as a catalyst, BALANCE-UNBALANCE 2011 will explore intersections between NATURE, ART, SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY and SOCIETY as we move into an era of both unprecedented ecological threats and transdisciplinary possibilities.

BALANCE-UNBALANCE will call for two days of reflection, debate, and the promotion of projects and actions regarding the environment and our human responsibility at this defining moment in our history. The conference will be held at Concordia University during November 4th and 5th of 2011.

One of the main goals of this conference is to develop the role of the arts and artists in dealing with environmental challenges.

La performance, je transporte et porte un plastique transparent usé, contenant un peu d'eau, et ma valise de terre. En dessous du plastique, je porte pantalon roulé et t-shirt, me rappelant mon enfance quand je prenais des marches sur les plages d'Antigua dans les Antilles, où mes grands-parents habitaient (le pays de mes grands-parents et leurs parents). Une valise qui contient la terre, un grand plastic conteneur d'eau, transformé en robe, transformé en sacs conteneur de corps et eau. Le sensuelle, la terre, l'eau, les contradictions et intersections du personnel, corps humain, naissances, changements, morts, et extases en relation avec les changements sur la planète. Je chante quelques parties / melodies des chansons de Lionel Richie de 1974, que je renomme « Not Easy » et de Bob Marley, que je renomme « Yes Woman, Yes Cry ». J'ai changé les mots et pour les miennes. Sac d'eau, contenant d'eau, habit d'eau, Terre habiller de valise, la mer e dans le plastique, le corps mer e..... Les gestes, de toucher la terre, bouger dans l'eau, seront improvisés avec ces moments de chanter, pauses et moments de mouvements et actions

“Eau Terre Mer e”, just cant translate in english the same meaning as with the french words. It is because the sound of the word Mer (Ocean or sea) is the same as Mère (“Mer e”) (mother in english), so through the sound of the word, you get both meanings in the word of ocean-mother. So to translate the concept of the performance from the title “Eau Terre Mer e”, I refer to Water Earth Ocean-Mother, as connecting to being a mother, having a mother, and the acts or non acts of mothering-caring, or not caring, whether you are man or woman. And, well, here is my random rant of expression, when I looked at the video documentation of “Eau Terre Mer e”,

I just felt like writing what came to mind, not order it, correct, censor, arrange, fix, make into correct grammar, structure.... a steam of thoughts, that come from my experience of imagining, conceiving and performing this artwork-performance, visually, voice, touch, matter, heart, soul, fragments, imperfections, and other. It is the process of writing, here, what I have written, or just is maybe to be corrected, or just nice to just let loose. Some may call it bla bla, or non-sensical. Maybe you wont get anything out of it, well, there you go.....

Yep I like to sing and move to the sound of R&B soul pop icon Lionel Richie and reggae, ska, rocksteady icon Bob Marley, with my untrained, non-singer voice, I sing and perform, focused on the actions I intent to do, but also improvise within that intention. Flows, crack, squeaks, soul, fragment, people might say, ya it not singing, I did not say I was a singer, but I like to sing, a bit, sometimes, and get into the soul of the music, but then I get shy, inhibited, it is part of it too, and I change things, the lyric, to make them mine, and look at other ways of « seeing », being, that are not common or « mainstream », but it was once not mainstream, until it became popular, and then we say poo poo, cause it gets so popular it takes over and dominates, out of balance. But still the soul remains in the music, and Bob Marley’s meaning to address the social issues in Jamaica, the root of the music. Its just when sometimes it gets too popular, it gets superficial, and fluff and ya you want some, need some fluff at times. But I can’t help it, it gets too glossy and it hurts my eyes the red lipstick is like bubble gum, it is too sweet, overload. But then sometimes I want to eat it up and it can’t be red enough. But hey, maybe we all like a little overload sometimes, maybe, maybe not, maybe at one point it is simply too much. It is for the youth, overload, but you can be old at 20 too, or young at 65, maybe.... Cell phone seduction, being seduced by, you name it, depends where you are at. Seductively accepted, like how we are all so hooked on our cell phones, the new way to « always » feel connected. Like the plastic invasion, now a remnant, used, still around, being made to biodegrade, soon plastic will be a collector’s item, maybe we should be saving it. The big, dirty, used plastic contains a little bit of water, just enough, not enough. I carry it, it is enough, awkward. I look absurd. For most, performance art is absurd, weird, what the hell was that about, a disruption, an abstraction, an action that disturbs, disrupts, “dérange”. Yep that is what it wants to do, thwart how you see reality, a provoquer, but who is listening, who is looking, how does it affect and who, so marginal, even elitist. It makes people angry sometimes because they don’t understand. Or they might even get something out of it, hmmm I am simply ranting, rambling, intentionally, selfishly enjoying this freedom, to not make clear sentences and worry about grammar. Call it poetry, prose, or simply terrible writing, unclear, confusion, rant. ... to be continued or not.....

« Eau Terre Mer e - man mother, woman mother » est une performance solo, où je suis vêtue de plastique transparent contenant de l’eau. En dessous du plastique, je porte pantalon roulé et t-shirt, me rappelant mon enfance quand je prenais des marches sur les plages d’Antigua dans les Antilles, où mes grand-parents habitaient (le pays de mon grand-père et son père). « Eau Terre Mer e - man mother, woman mother » is a solo performance, where i am dressed with a transparent plastic containing water. I am dressed in rolled-up pants and t-shirt, remembering my childhood, when I would walk on the beaches in Antigua in the West-Indies, where my grand-parents lived (the country of my grand-father and great-grand father). The water moves between me and the the plastic. I carry a suitcase containing earth. I will sing fragments of a song I remixed of Lionel Richie’s from 1974, I call « Not Easy » and a song by Bob Marley, which I call « Yes Woman, Yes Cry », I have changed some words but kept the melodies. The suitcase of earth is open. The gestures of touching the earth and moving in the water in the plastic will be improvised with the moments of singing, with pauses and moments of mouvements and actions.

Le Kiwi-Box est un jardin mobile ingénieux, un concept de Issiaka Sanou (Chargé de projet Quartier 21), qui a été réalisé à partir de matériaux recyclés, permettant l’occupation temporaire et participative d’espaces minéralisés sous aménagés. Le Kiwi Box a été conçu dans le cadre du projet Quartier 21 « Cultivons notre quartier! », et du projet « Aménager des quartiers durables »,

Nicole Fournier et Issiaka Sanou ont travaillé ensemble pour incorporer les plantes sauvages comestibles, et de célébrer l’événement inauguration avec le fameux concept de «Live Dining», qui permetta aux invités d’apprendre à reconnaitre et à cuisiner des plantes sauvages. «Live Dining» vient valoriser le projet du Kiwi-box de Place Benoit, et faire connaître les liens entres les plantes cultivées et sauvages, la nourriture, cuisiner et manger ensembles en communauté.

Autrement! 2010 - sous le thème de « Faire du chemin vers l’égalité », tenues à l’Université Laval à Sainte-Foy, suivies d’une manifestation devant l’Assemblée nationale à Québec. Pharmaceutical remedies have their secrets in plants, of which we are excluded from knowing about. Let’s reconnect to the secrets of plants medicinal properties, not inside a doctor’s office or laboratory, but outside in the environment of a yard, wildlife habitat, where the plant lives. We will prepare and learn about the origins of medicine and the secrets of plant healing from what is growing live.

Imaginary interconnected organisms drawing series is about what we don’t know, in what is still invisible to us, in our understanding of the biodiversity of life on earth.

Drawing imaginary interconnected organisms is about attempting to represent the invisibility in the interconnectedness in biodiversity, and the endless possibilities of life forms or elements of life that we are dependent upon and many of which we cannot know, nor define. Biodiversity being a word used for the biodiversity of species that make up life on the planet earth, and the diversity that exist within each specie itself and the elements, matter, environments and habitats that envelop or surround interconnected organisms, and the diversity of cultures, origins, races, ages, genders, individuals and communities.

I use color drawings to express these imaginary interconnected organisms, in an abstract, doodle, graffiti-like style, where the process of making the drawings is freestyle, chaotic and likened to doodling. I don’t pay attention to order, but then eventually make forms and connections randomly and orderly, within the chaos, going back and forth between chaos and order, in this freestyle of drawing.

Durant l'évènement de L'Érablière urbaine de Mario Bonenfant (un projet de InTerreArt)
Jeu Banquet d'érablière «Live Dining» de l'artiste Nicole Fournier, mettant en valeur les arbres sur le site, l'érable et l'épinette, source de nourriture et lien à nos cultures multiples, avec Dégustations de breuvages Marco: bouleau, érable et épinette et beurre d'érable sur bagette!

La bière d'épinette vient de la culture autochtone; c'est une recette transmise par les autochtones aux européens, qui est devenu une tradition Québécoise. Les familles fesaient leur biere d'épinette chez eux, avec l'arbre épinette sur le terrain. Je parlais avec un monsieur d'environ 70 ans à l'érablière urbaine le 16 mars, l'après-midi de l'ouverture, et il me racontait comment son père fesait de la bière d'épinette dans leur cours à Saint-Laurent. Il s'en rappelait. À l'érablière urbaine, il a un arbre épinette, qui sera un des deux lieux du Jeu Banquet d'érablière Live Dining. Voici ci-haut une image de l'installation, relation avec bière d'épinette avec le seul arbre épinette au parc Beaudet à Saint-Laurent.

Nicole Fournier presents the concept, of a a conceptual collective performance with sand, rabbits, kids and parents/artists/musicians, bringing new meaning to the beach party.

Sand, rabbits, kids, parents/artists – play, drums, sandbox, beach party

The performers include : Joanna Peters and Max Sansalone, professional Musicians/percussionist, their kids Amelia (4 yrs) and Giacomo (18months) Sansalone; Marie-Suzanne Désilets, Artist and her child/rabbit Charbon Désilets, and Nicole Fournier, Artist and her teenage sons Wes and Smith Fournier-Bourgeois, and their children rabbits Snif and Lily Fournier.

4 adults/parents, 2 children, 2 teenagers and 3 rabbits will interact all together, responding to the moment, to the emotions that arise, in a context of drumming, performance, playing with each other in the sand. All represent different complexities in the parent-child relationship, which include the patterns we learn in our relationships with our mother’s and father’s and how these play out in intimate relationships. Running after kids or kids running free without parental controls, the continuity and concentration of actions are interrupted by the children’s and rabbit’s unpredictable behaviors, and how the adults respond to being interrupted in the pursuit of concentrated work or play. Art interdisciplinary performance theory and personal experience are mixed, merging new definitions of performance artists and the concrete emotional challenges of relationships, self and parenting

The human body performs invisible daily work, as a collective of cellular communities, in maintaining the human body that we call an individual. Microorganisms invade or do not invade, depending on the integrity of the cellular walls, of different cellular communities. The integrity of cell walls is affected by internal and external factors, in particular environmental factors, that strenghthen or weaken the walls, from pollutants and what the body injests - food that comes from the environment, the soil and plants, how the food is grown, that nourish us or do not nourish us (depending on the food and the way it is transformed). Psychological states related to personal and social relationships, affect human health and therefore the ability to maintain healthy cell walls........such are some of the interconnections described in InTerconnected Performers thematic. text by Nicole Fournier

Ideas of Interconnected Performers thematic include example of human feet touching soil in plate in Couvert sur Place concept - an adaptive performance for individual and collective performances, and the performance of plant seeding itself in the cedar root - Performance plant action: finding soil within a decomposing root; decomposing root action (microorganisms working together to decompose the root, forming soil inside, to nourrish the seed that allowed the cosmos to grow).

from backyard live dining 2009, Catherine and Anne-Marie Lanza and Nicole Fournier dug up Rudbeckia triloba or brown eyed susan flower, for her roots (used like echinacea), read more on the live dining blog

Monica Giacomin joined them, bringing nettle from her backyard, Catherine Lanza had also harvested nettle from Mont Royal. Catherine made tincture with the nettle and kept some of the fresh nettle to dry for infusion (herbal tea). Nettle is good for the endocrine system, and more.

Each drawing pinned to the dress and train is a visualization of the invisibility of the interconnectedness in biodiversity (wordy complicated, yes, on purpose). The idea of interconnectedness between all of life is pretty big to grasp, these drawings are an atempt to takle its invisible interconnectedness.

"Couvert sur Place - Parc de l’Esplanade" est un concept et performance par Nicole Fournier, produit et réalisé par Nicole Fournier, le 14 mai, 2009 à Québec.

"Couvert sur Place - Parc de l’Esplanade" est une action symbolique artistique, avec invitation de participer. Nicole Fournier a créé une installation en demi-cercle d'une diversité de 20 couverts (napperons, assiettes, ustensiles, verres de vin), à côté des chapiteaux dans le Parc de l'Esplanade, de l'édifice de l'Assemblé Nationale de notre gouvernement du Québec provincial.

L'action Couvert sur Place s'est déroulée en collectivité, avec 20 personnes qui ont participé, par intérêt spontané. La sollicitation par téléphone de Nicole Fournier a été fait quelques jours avant le 14 mai (il y avait un intérêt généré, mais pas de confirmation de participantEs). Nicole Fournier avait sollicité les personnes de Montréal sur l'autobus, allant à Québec pour le Dépôt et manifestation du 14 mai, et il a eu des confirmations de ces personnes sur l'autobus (transport organisé par le Collectif pour un Québec sans pauvreté). Les participantEs étaient celles et ceux, qui ont confirméE leurs participations sur l'autobus de Montréal et celles et ceux qui étaient sur place, sur les lieux, après le Dépôt de la pétition au gouvernement, pour un Québec sans pauvreté, organisé par Le Collectif pour un Québec sans pauvreté.

DE NOTRE VIVANT - Cette appellation désigne l’ensemble des activités actuelles de LEVIER axées sur les liens entre art et lutte à la pauvreté (ou plutôt saine interdépendance). Afin d’encourager la création artistique confrontant les causes systémiques de la pauvreté.

Le 14 mai marquera l'aboutissement de cette longue campagne visant à recueillir le plus de signatures possible pour une pétition à trois volets qui a circulé depuis un an et demi et qui portait sur les points suivants :
> - l’accès à des services publics universels de qualité ;
> - le relèvement du salaire minimum de façon à permettre aux travailleurs et aux travailleuses de sortir de la pauvreté ;
> - la hausse des protections publiques pour assurer des conditions de santé et de dignité à toute personne qui n’a pas un revenu suffisant.

À l'intérieur de l'installation de 20 couverts en demi-cercle, un sac en tissue de matières recyclés contient de la terre et une grande cuillère. Devant le sac est un verre de vin qui contient des semences de 12 plantes sauvages avec floraison qui attirent les pollinisateurs. Les polllinisateurs* assurent la reproduction (la vie) à ces plantes qui sont essentielles pour la santé de l'environnement et donc pou les humains et les espèces interconnectés. 20 plantes médicinales et comestibles (10 plantes de mélisses et 10 plantes de monarda) font parties de l'action. Une plante est placée devant chaque couvert. 20 personnes du public ont participé. Après leur participation dans l'action, qui est devenue une action collective, chaque participantEs est partie avec une plante ensemencée des 12 variétés de plantes sauvages, pour ensuite quand elles et ils retourneront dans leurs régions du Québec, planteront leur plante chez eux, symboliques d'une continuation à l'action collective pour un Québec sans pauvreté. (Les participantEs et le public spectateur et spectatrice ont aussi été offertE un couvert, ou un objet des couverts, pour emporter chez eux, comme souvenir symbolique d'une continuité de la démonstration de la journée. Presque tous les couverts ont été donnés.

*Les semences de plantes sauvages de l'action Couvert sur Place sont un don de InTerreArt, partenaire avec la Fédération Canadienne de la Faune, pour leur programme Défi Habitat-Pollinisateur.Les pollinisateurs sont essentiels non seulement pour le maintien d’écosystèmes en santé, mais aussi parce qu’ils assurent notre approvisionnement en nourriture et autres biens. Leur avenir est pourtant en péril, et c’est pour cette raison que la Fédération canadienne de la faune a décidé de lancer l’initiative Défi Habitat-Pollinisateurs.

Quelques participantEs ont enlevé leurs chaussures et bas, avec Nicole Fournier, pour se mettre pieds nus
D'autres participantEs ont continué a touché la terre avec leurs mains
Nous prenons notre plante médicinale et comestible et notre verre de vin de semences diversifiés
Nous sommes nu-pied ou nu-main dans notre assiette,
Nous mettons notre plante dans la terre dans notre assiette
Nous ensemençons avec des semences de biodiversité de notre verre de vin, dans notre plante dans la terre dans l’assiette
Nous rajoutons la terre dans l'assiette par-dessus les semences dans le pot de la plante
Nous partons avec notre plante ensemencée et notre couvert ou un objet de notre couvert (si voulu), pour le ramener chez nous, pour continuer à prendre soin et de faire pousser l'idée et la réalité d'un Québec sans pauvreté.

Concept de Couvert sur Place, fait en collectivité

Surtout pertinent pour l'action collective à Québec le 14 mai

‘Couvert sur Place’ est une performance, action artistique, poétique, affirmation, manifestation performative visuelle, concept qui contient un questionnement. Car, très important est le sens du concept Couvert sur Place. Le sens est guidé par une réflexion et un questionnement sur la complexité du réel: Pointer les pieds à terre pour regarder notre position sur le sol, avec ce qui concerne nos liens avec les autres : être humain, races, cultures, espèces, plantes, écosystèmes, biodiversité, les racines de la civilisation, ce qui est sauvage et civilisé, inutile ou utile pour les humains, les cultures de nos ancêtres indigènes et non indigènes, qui font partie de nos histoires et mémoires de l’environnement, la nourriture, les normes (incluant les normes et étiquettes de table), la pauvreté et la continuation de la réalité de la disparité entre riches et pauvres, à l’intérieur du Québec, du Canada et dans le monde entier.

Le sens du mot ‘Couvert’ et du mot ‘Place’ est intégral dans le concept ‘Couvert sur Place’.

‘Couvert’ peut être défini comme couvert de table : ustensiles et assiettes, etc., et aussi comme abri ou logement ou place à habiter. Aussi peut-on le définir comme dans le sens d’être voilé ou climat nuageux. Nous avons besoin de pluie pour la croissance des plantes et des forêts.

Le sens de ‘Place’ peut être défini comme faire sa place, remplir un rôle ou une fonction, un espace occupé, une ville, une esplanade.

Le 14 mai à Québec, devant l’Assemblée nationale, organisé par Le Collectif pour un Québec sans pauvreté,

Campagne Mission Collective" Bâtir un Québec sans pauvreté

MISSION COLLECTIVE : bâtir un Québec sans pauvreté est une nouvelle campagne de mobilisation pour démontrer à l’Assemblée nationale notre volonté commune de faire du Québec une société sans pauvreté et l’engager, au nom des droits humains, à combattre la pauvreté, ici, dès maintenant.

En 2002, l’Assemblée nationale du Québec a voté à l’unanimité la Loi visant à lutter contre la pauvreté et l’exclusion sociale. C’est la mobilisation populaire qui a obtenu cette loi, après quatre années d’un travail gigantesque pour rédiger une proposition de loi avec les réflexions et suggestions de milliers de personnes, et recueillir l’appui de plus de 215 307 personnes et 1600 organisations.

Nous avons un but : éliminer la pauvreté, qui fait obstacle à la réalisation des droits humains et entraîne privations et souffrance pour les personnes qui la vivent. Nous avons fait du chemin en obtenant la Loi, mais la situation ne s’est pas vraiment améliorée. La pauvreté est toujours présente au Québec. Les écarts s’agrandissent entre les plus pauvres et les plus riches. Cette situation est inacceptable et appelle à l’action.

Il faut se donner un nouveau pacte social et fiscal, une nouvelle façon de redistribuer la richesse par le moyen de la fiscalité et des programmes sociaux. Cela relève de la responsabilité de l’État.

Devant l’enthousiasme démontré pour MISSION COLLECTIVE, à l’automne 2008, les membres du Collectif ont décidé de prolonger LA CAMPAGNE DE SIGNATURES JUSQU’AU 31 MARS 2009.
