Breakthrough in Blue Lasers Yields 10X Write Times

The highest capacity optical storage devices and DVD recorders all use blue lasers -- and offer only poky write times in the range of 2X to 4X. New high-powered blue lasers could change that in a hurry

Nichia Corp. of Japan has broken the speed record for writing Blu-ray discs.
The company has announced a new blue-violet laser that can fill up a 54GB double-layer disc at more than 10X record speed. Currently shipping Blu-ray and HD-DVD format disc recorders are mostly of the 2X variety, though a few can boast 4X speed.

The difference from today’s 2X record times to 10X, based on future availability of the high-speed lasers, will be remarkable, according to blue laser expert Steven DenBaars, professor of materials and co-director of the Solid-State Lighting Center at the University of California Santa Barbara. As an example, today’s 2X blue-laser-based DVD recorders require about 50 minutes to write a disc containing a full-length DVD movie, DenBaars said, while a 10X laser could accomplish the task in about 10 minutes.view site

Sharp ships HD recorder with 1TB of storage

Sharp Corp. today announced five new models of its AQUOS HD recorders, including a model with a 1,000GB (1TB) hard drive. Three of the new models come with a built-in high-speed infrared system that allows the fast transfer of photographs from mobile phones and digital cameras to be displayed on large-screen AQUOS LCD TVs.

The high-definition recorders also allow users to simultaneously record two programs in full-spec HD from an AQUOS LCD TV. All models also have a quick activation function that allows users to activate a recorder from the standby mode in only .08 seconds, which Sharp claims is an industry first.

64 DVDs on a disc: holographic storage to ship

InPhase Technologies Inc. announced today it will start bulk shipments of the industry's first holographic disc drive this July in a format able to store 300GB of uncompressed data on a single platter. That capacity will expand to 1.6TB per disc within three years, the company said. The initial Tapestry HDS-300R holographic disc drives shipped in December to beta users.

he Tapestry HDS-300R, which is the first rev of the product, will use a write-once format suited to regulatory agencies and is aimed strictly at the archival market for industries such as IT, health sciences, government agencies and professional video recording. InPhase plans to come to market with a re-writable format disc by the end of 2008.view

All Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD Encryption Defeated by Single Key

One key to decrypt them all

Last December, a hacker named “Muslix64” circumvented HD DVD copy protection, resulting in the release of pirated copies on the Internet. Less than one month later, the same hacker, with the help of another hacker, was able to crack the encryption on Blu-ray Discs.

On Sunday, another Doom9 forum poster named “arnezami” presented the next great breakthrough in HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc decryption. Previously, every HD movie needed its own unique key in order to be decrypted; but with arnezami’s discovery, there is now one key to rule them all -- at least for now, until the Advanced Access Content System Licensing Administrator gets on it.

Motorola luncurkan seri ROKR baru? Ya, Motorola ROKR E6 adalah keluaran baru dari Motorola dan merupakan smartphone versi Linux dengan dukungan multimedia. Walau pengembangan ROKR E6 tak didukung dengan iTunes, seperti halnya ROKR E2 yang juga merupakan handset berbasis Linux tanpa dukungan iTunes pula, namun ROKR E6 benar-benar berbeda.

Tak ada kesamaan desain dengan seri RAZR pada Motorola ROKR E6. Walaupun seri ini telah diprediksikan sebelumnya oleh Motorola, penampilannya kali ini terlihat sangat fresh dengan style PDA. Dengan ketebalan hanya 14 mm, Motorola ROKR E6 tampak lebih 'manis'.

Fitur utama dari Motorola ROKR E6 adalah layar 2,4" touch-sensitive berdimensi 240x320 piksel dan kedalaman warna 262 ribu warna. Tak seperti produk Motorola pada umumnya, Motorola ROKR E6 memiliki memori tambahan jenis SD cards dan memori internal 2Gb. Selain memiliki fitur Bluetooth, Motorola ROKR E6 juga dilengkapi dengan FM radio.

Dan untuk fitur multimedia memiliki banyak sekali pengembangan, Motorola ROKR E6 mendukung format MP3, AAC, WMA, RealMedia, WMR, WAV, MPEG4, H.263 dan lainnya. Fasilitas audionya bisa dihubungkan dengan koneksi socket 3,5 mm headphone Bluetooth . Selain itu, media bisa juga ditransfer ke headset melalui kabel USB 2.0 atau dengan memory card reader.

Motorola memang menerapkan fitur entertainment pada Motorola ROKR E6, namun juga melengkapinya dengan fitur seperti pada PDA, yakni web browser, email client, Microsoft Office viewer dan juga fungsi lengkap Personal Information Management (PIM).

Motorola ROKR E6 adalah handset berjaringan GSM, walaupun mungkin ia dilengkapi pula dengan dukungan koneksi data EDGE, sebagai tambahan untuk fasilitas GPRS (untuk fitur EDGE hingga saat ini masih belum bisa dipastikan).

Namun demikian, tak dapat dipungkiri bahwa penampilan Motorola ROKR E6 benar-benar luar biasa, sesuai dengan fitur yang dimilikinya. Dan untuk saat ini Motorola ROKR E6 masih ditujukan bagi pasar China, untuk kawasan Asia, dan akan tersedia pada bulan ini.

iPhone, Inovasi Baru dari Apple

Kini kita tak perlu ribet lagi mendengarkan musik, menerima telepon, koneksi internet secara terpisah, setelah Apple mengusung produk baru mereka, iPhone, tepat pada event Macworld Conference & Expo 9 Januari 2007. Dengan iPhone, Apple tampaknya melebihi perkiraan banyak orang bahkan para penggemar Apple yang memiliki banyak tuntutan. Alat berlayar lebar dari Apple ini berbentuk cantik dan merupakan perpaduan iPod, telepon genggam, dan komputer, bahkan menjelajah dunia maya. iPhone ini dilengkapi fitur layar sentuh saat kita menelpon dan mendengarkan musik.

Namun kehadiran iPhone ini juga dibarengi berbagai keraguan yang mempertanyakan apakah telepon ini berdampak besar di pasaran. Mengingat harga jual iPhone (sekitar US$499) terlalu mahal bagi banyak konsumen.

iPhone ini juga disambut baik para penggemar Mac karena Apple menyempurnakan fitur iPhone untuk memenuhi kebutuhan konsumen yang berpengalaman dalam teknologi dan mempertahakan desain khas Apple yang terkenal.

Sebenarnya jika kita lihat di balik rancangan Apple ini, tak banyak teknologi yang berbeda dari yang ditawarkan perusahaan-perusahaan lain, yang membedakan hanya Apple yang mengeluarkan iPhone dan merekalah yang menjual produk ini, jelas Ben Wood dari perusahaan peneliti CCS Insight.

Namun harga iPhone yang lumayan membuat kantong ludes ini sepertinya tak begitu bermasalah bagi editor majalah MacFormat, Graham Barlow, yang memutuskan akan membeli dua iPhone, berapapun harganya.

Seperti halnya banyak orang lainnya, Barlow sangat terkesan dengan teknologi layar sentuh (multi-touch) yang ditawarkan iPhone, dan telah dipatenkan Apple.

Layar sentuh lahir dari kekesalan Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, dengan pemakaian telepon genggam saat ini. Dengan rancangan yang ditawarkan iPhone, pengguna tinggal menyentuh layar iPhone yang berukuran 3,5 inci untuk menyambungkan telepon. Jika ada telepon yang masuk, pengguna tinggal menyentuh logo kedua. Logo ketiga disentuh untuk menggabungkan kedua sambungan telepon menjadi pembicaraan tiga orang.Dengan gebrakan layar sentuh yang ditawarkan iPhone, teknologi layar sentuh ini kelihatannya akan berdampak sama pada pasar telepon selular seperti halnya pengaruh mesin Nintendo Wii yang dapat mendeteksi gerakan pada pasar game.

Sebelum mengenalkan iPhone, Apple pernah bereksperimen dengan teknologi layar sentuh. Apple pertama kali mencoba dengan PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) jenis Newton. Perusahaan lainnya seperti SonyEricsson dan Nokia juga pernah memiliki alat dengan layar sentuh namun sayang banyak yang tak berhasil.

Yang membuat iPhone ini istimewa dibanding gadget sejenis adalah inovasi kecil pada iPhone seperti sensor gerakan yang secara otomatis mendeteksi ketika pemakai memutar alat dari posisi berdiri menjadi tidur dan mengubah tampilan sesuai dengan posisi layar telepon.
