2nd- seed Kim Clijsters will play against 5th-seed Samantha Stosur for a spot in the 2010 US Open Women’s semifinals. The match will be played tonight 7:00 pm ET Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Flushing Meadows, New York.

Clijsters has a clear advantage over her Australian rival in their head-to-head matchup. The Belgian Clijsters has won all the three matches played between the two, in the past.

Defending champion Clijsters has yet to drop a set at the ongoing 2010 US Open. Contrastingly, Stosur had to battle hard for 2 hours and 40 minutes against Dementieva to reach the quarter-finals. In fact, Dementieva took the second set of that match at 6-0, and that is all the more curious given Stosur’s powerful serve. However, Stosur did well to rally from that point onwards, to take the final set and a place in the quaretr-finals.

The US Open has not been Stosur’s favorite surface as she appeared six times at this tournament and never got past the second round, before this year. On the other hand, Clijsters has had an 18 match winning streak at the US Open.

This quarterfinal match will take place at 19:00 Eastern Daylight Time, immediately ahead of the Mens’ 4th-round match between Rafael Nadal and Feliciano Lopez.

Round 1 – Referee Herb Dean in the cage for the evening’s main event. Penn stoic in his corner, while Edgar bounces and paces on his side of the cage. Edgar bobs and weaves early, but Penn is on the prowl. Edgar ducks in and immediately takes Penn to the back. Penn tries to scramble for an arm underneath, but he settles back into guard. Penn overhooks the left arm and keeps Edgar tight, and his feet are on the hips. Penn tries to sweep, but Edgar scampers away. Edgar circling two minutes in. Edgar pawing jabs. Penn trying to counter. Edgar presses in against the cage. Quick takedown. Penn pops back up, and Edgar delivers a more decisive slam to the canvas. Doesn’t stay there, and they reset. Penn blocks a kick. He;s still in the center. Edgar jabbing away and moving. Low kick for Edgar. Edgar to the body and the up top. Penn leads with a hook. Edgar fires off four punches, but they mostly miss. Penn lands a crisp left at the end, but it’s not enough.

Round 2 – Edgar with a 1-2 in the early seconds. Penn kicks high but misses. Penn lands a low kick. Edgar bouncing and moving. Penn lands a left, then a right. Edgar looks for shot but delivers a knee to the chest. Penn still stalking, but Edgar scampering away. Quick clinch and away. Penn still having trouble keeping Edgar in range. Edgar shoots, but Penn stands him up. Two minutes in. Edgar kicks the body. Penn works his jab well three rimes. Penn to the body. Edgar shoots in and pushes forward after it´s initially defended. Edgar on top. Penn scrambles back to his feet. Edgar lands a left. Edgar chases with his jab. Penn retreats well. Edgar circling, dancing, jabbing. One minute. Penn throws a three-punch combo, but it’s short. Very familiar feel to this fight. MMAjunkie.com again sees it for Edgar, 10-9.

Round 3 – Edgar jabbing again. He shoots in, but Penn defends. Edgar does kick to the body as he leaves. Edgar still bust, still moving. Penn can’t catch him. Penn does land a left hand. Knee inside from Penn, and Edgar just misses a high kick. Edgar kicks to the leg. Edgar moving left, then right. Traded shots for both. Penn lands again, but Edgar bounces back with a rapid-fire combo. Halfway in. Edgar kicks the legs. Edgar lands a left hand. Penn does land, but Edgar lands several more. They’re not concussive blows, but Edgar is scoring. Edgar shoots, but Penn stays upright. Edgar clinches up again with a minute left. Penn backs up to the cage and stays upright. Edgar still busy at the end. Penn has landed a few shots here and there, but he’s getting outworked once again.

Round 4 – Penn ducks under and gets the takedown early. Edgar tries to scramble up, but Penn pushes down and keeps him pinned. Edgar works in a butterfly guard.Edgar shrimps out and slips away. Penn gives chase, but it’s a little slow in response. Edgar still doing his thing. He kicks the leg, and it drops Penn. Edgar immediately jumps on top. Penn pulls guard. He pulls the left leg up the back in rubber guard. Edgar stays tight, and Penn lets it go. Edgar delivers a blow from the top. He stands, and he tries to catch Penn as he does the same. Edgar with another combo that lands. Penn getting in one punch every now and then, but Edgar answers with three. Low kicks from Edgar. The champ circles, darts and weaves. High kick blocked. Left hand at the end scores for Penn.

Round 5 – Penn takes the center, and he’s going to need a finish. He ducks under and gets a hard-fouhgt takedown. Edgar scrambles back to his feet, but Penn stays attached to his back. Penn drags him back down, but Edgar alertly spins in and sweeps to top position. Edgar on top. Penn rolling a bit, but he’s not looking for much. Edgar lands a few elbows from the top, but he’s pretty content to just ride the top. Penn does scramble up, and they reset. Edgar still lively as he dances around. Penn tries a kick, but it’s pushed away. Straight for Penn, but Edgar fires a combo. Penn soots, but Edgar just pulls away. Kick to the leg for Edgar, and that’s it. Final round for Edgar, 10-9.

Juan Martin del Potro and Kim Clijsters are the defending champions. Del Potro, due to a wrist injury has opted not to defend his title. Former champions Justine Henin, as well as World No. 1 Serena Williams have also withdrawn due to an elbow injury and foot injury, respectively.
