Benchmark indices closed firm, riding a late surge, but finished roughly 3 percent lower week-on-week. Brokers say the mood is cautious after the global sell-off on Thursday, and back home, a mixed bag of quarterly earnings. The Sensex closed at 19704, up 30 points over the previous close, after touching a low of 19568.49 earlier in the day.

The Nifty ended 16.50 points higher at 5983.55. Tata Power, Tata Steel, Larsen, Sterlite Industries and ICICI Bank were among the key gainers in the Sensex, rising 2-4 percent. Healthcare and realty were among the worst performing sectors, while buyers queued up to buy shares of metal, banking and capital goods companies. Wockhardt led losers in the pharma sector, finishing around 6.5 percent down, after coming close to touching the lower end of the 20 percent intra-day circuit filter.

The stock has been under pressure since yesterday after the US FDA red flagged its export-oriented unit at Aurangabad. Sun Pharma shares fell around 4 percent after operating margins of its Israeli subsidiary, Taro Pharma, fell below analyst estimates.

Equity benchmarks plunged Thursday, as ripples of the crash in Japanese shares were felt across globe, with India being no exception. The mood was further soured by the weakness in the rupee and disappointing fourth quarter numbers from State Bank of India, the country’s biggest lender.

Benchmark indices drifted lower Wednesday, as buyers chose to await cues from the US Federal Reserve before deciding on the next course of action. Renewed weakness in the rupee and tepid fourth quarter earnings from engineering major Larsen & Toubro weighed on sentiment.

The BSE Sensex closed at 20062.24 , down 49.37 points over the previous close. The Nifty shed 19.60 points to close at 6094.50.

Equity investors across the globe are keen waiting for US Federal Reserve chief Ben Bernanke’s speech tonight to see if he will signal a reversal of the monetary easing policy. If the Fed starts raising interest rates, it is expected that investors will start cutting exposure to commodities, especially gold, and plough a part of that money into equities.

Larsen & Toubro’s fourth quarter net profit declined 7 percent year-on-year, weighed down by higher interest cost, and was way below analyst estimates. A one-share-for-two-held bonus issue failed to pacify the market, and the stock fell 6 percent percent to close at Rs 1517.10.

Realty and capital goods shares were the worst performers today, while FMCG, healthcare and IT shares gained as investors sought refuge in defensive sectors.

The rupee fell to a near 6-month low today, and this has raised concerns that foreign investors may be tempted to book profits, fearing further weakness in the currency.

The Nifty picked momentum in the afternoon and closed near day's high on Monday after banking stocks moved in the positive territory even as the online portal Cobrapost's sting operation alleged 23 public and private sector banks were involved in money laundering activities.

The 50-share index ended at 5,975.10, up 31.10 points or 0.52 per cent. It touched a high of 5,976.50 and a low of 5,928.45 in trade today.

The Bank Nifty closed at 12,435.65, up 42.05 points or 0.34 per cent. It touched a high of 12,436 and a low of 12,188.30 in trade today. The S&P BSE Sensex closed at 19,666.87, up 91.23 points or 0.47 per cent. It touched a high of 19,694.29 and a low of 19,554.31 in trade today. The S&P BSE Midcap Index rallied 1.15 per cent and the S&P BSE Smallcap Index was 0.98 per cent higher.

Among the sectoral indices, the S&P BSE Metal Index was up 1.96 per cent, the S&P BSE IT Index was 1.95 per cent higher and the S&P BSE Auto Index gained 1.40 per cent.

The S&P BSE FMCG Index declined 0.84 per cent. Hindalco IndustriesBSE 3.52 % (3.72 per cent), Tata SteelBSE 3.58 % (3.63 per cent), Asian Paints (3.30 per cent), TCS (3.28 per cent) and NMDC (2.77 per cent) were among the top Nifty gainers. Shares of Hindalco extended gains after copper prices gained momentum on London Metal Exchange following a rate cut by the European Central Bank. Investors seem to be on selling mode today as the Nifty slipped closer to 5950 led by rate sensitives. The Reserve Bank of India delivered its policy in line with street estimates. It has slashed the repo rate by 25 basis points to 7.25 percent and left cash reserve ratio (CRR) unchanged at 4 percent.

However, the tone was hawkish and the central bank warned there is ‘little space’ for further monetary easing. The Nifty fell 55.35 points to close at 5944 while the Sensex was down 160 points to end at 19575.64. The Bank Nifty lost 2.5 percent while BSE Bankex was down 2.4 percent. Other rate sensitives like BSE Realty index (down 1.4 percent), BSE Auto (down 1.5 percent) too lost investors’ confidence. However, metals, technology and capital goods stocks were on buyers’ radar.

The midcap index (down 0.3 percent) saw smaller cuts as Canara Bank, Allahabad Bank And Karnataka Bank were down 3-4% each. GMR Infra fell 2.1 percent while HDIL was down 1.2 percent. Tata Motors (down 3.8 percent), SBI (down 3.6 percent), ICICI Bank, GAIL and Bajaj Auto were the major losers in the Sensex.

Market Closing : Trend For Tomorrow 3 May 2013

Sensex & Nifty rose on Thursday to mark their highest close since February, as interest rate-sensitive stocks gained on expectations that the Reserve Bank of India(RBI) will cut interest rates on Friday, while technology shares such as TCS rose on value buying.

Analysts are expecting the central bank to cut interest rate by 25 basis points following which the Nifty is likely to consolidate with negative bias. A 50 bps point rate cut may push the index to 6,100 level and no rate cut may lead to a correction of over 100 points.

The 50-share index ended at 6,002.45, up 72.25 points or 1.22 per cent. It touched a high of 6,019.45 and a low of 5,910.95 in trade today.

The Sensex was at 19,733.76, up 229.58 points or 1.18 per cent. It touched a high of 19,792 and a low of 19,451.26 in trade today.

The S&P BSE Midcap Index was up 0.77 per cent and the S&P BSE Smallcap Index was 0.62 per cent higher.

Among the sectoral indices, the S&P BSE IT Index gained 2.47 per cent, the S&P BSE Capital Goods Index was 1.72 per cent higher, the S&P BSE Realty Index gained 1.42 per cent and the S&P BSE Oil & Gas Index was up 1.10 per cent.

Reliance Infrastructure (3.52 per cent), HCL Tech (3.41 per cent), TCS (3.38 per cent), Jaiprakash Associates (3.06 per cent) and M&M (3.02 per cent) were among the top Nifty gainers.

Shares of M&M gained after the company's total sales for the month of April increased to at 41,432, up 2 per cent, as compared to 40,715 units, year-on-year (y-o-y).

Cairn India (1.97 per cent), Hindustan Unilever (1.95 per cent), Hero MotoCorp (1.79 per cent), Hindalco (1.49 per cent) and Tata Motors (1.17 per cent) were among the top losers.

Market breadth was positive on the NSE with 774 gainers against 530 losers.

Foreign institutional investors bought shares worth Rs 876.93 crore while domestic institutional investors sold equities worth Rs 347.17 crore on Tuesday as per the provisional data from the National Stock Exchange.

Key equity benchmarks ended flat ahead of Thursday's derivatives expiry. Also, investors chose to stay out as the market will remain shut tomorrow on account of Mahavir Jayanti.

But traders maintain their cautious stance primarily due to the F&O expiry and RBI’s monetary policy scheduled on May 3.

The Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council (PMEAC) projected the economy to grow at 6.4 percent in FY14. He also said FY14 current account deficit (CAD) is expected to narrow down to 4.7 percent (from 5.1 percent in FY13) when the pace of exports pick up.

Equity benchmarks rallied Monday, with theSensex now having risen close to 1000 points from the low seen the Friday before last. Dealers said hopes of increased money flows into equities because of the recent weakness in commodity prices, as well an improvement in India’s macroeconomic fundamentals, were driving the uptrend, brokers said.

Brokerage house Nomura has listed India, Korea, Thailand and Philippines as the biggest likely winners in terms of higher growth, lower inflation and/or better economic fundamentals, if the fall in commodity prices sustained.

Equity benchmarks surged Thursday led by strengths in shares from the banking, capital goods and auto sectors, with the Sensex closing above the psychological 19000-mark.

Brokers said the narrowing of March trade deficit to a two-year low of USD 10.3 billion helped sustain the positive sentiment created by a decline in gold and crude oil prices.

The Sensex closed at 19016.46, up 285.30 points over its previous close, and the Nifty gained 94.40 points to close at 5783.10.

HDFC, Bharti Airtel, Tata Motors, L&T, Axis Bank, and Oriental Bank of Commerce were the key gainers among frontline shares, rising between 3-5 percent.

IndusInd Bank shares gained 7 percent on better than expected. Shares of JSW Steel and Sesa Goa rose briefly after the Supreme Court lifted a one-and-a-half-year ban on mining in Karnataka. But the stocks gave up much of the gains, with JSW Steel closing in the red and Sesa Goa ending the day marginally higher.

Falling commodity prices are a big positive for India and this could even prompt many foreign investors to increase their weightage for the country in their portfolio, said Tirthankar Patnaik of Religare Capital in an interview to CNBC-TV18 earlier today.

The Nifty took a breather today after surging close to two percent yesterday. The rally which started on Monday post 40-month low inflation data came to halt today on profit booking. Gold, crude prices also stabilized after hitting multi-month lows yesterday.

The Sensex closed at 18731.16 down 14 points and the Nifty ended below 5700 at 5688. The Nifty closed above its 200 day moving average of 5656.

Analysts are of the view that the fall in gold, crude prices will take care of the current account deficit but the problems pertaining to country’s growth are still unaddressed. India Inc is still reeling under slowdown and a mere fall in commodities or a 25 basis points rate cut will not bring them out of the woods.

Among the sectoral indices, FMCG was the top gainer, up by 1.41%, with ITC touching its all-time high at Rs 314. Auto, healthcare, metal and realty stocks also gained more than a percent each.

Earthquake In Iran : Tremors Felt in North India 16 April 2013

Tremors were felt across North India shortly after 4 pm today as an earthquake of magnitude 7.8 struck Iran, where at least 40 people were reported dead at 5 pm and many more were feared killed, according to local media.

The epicentre was reportedly along the Iran-Pakistan border.

"The aftershocks felt were 6.3 (magnitude) and at 4.24pm. No damage as such occurred," said RS Dattatreya of the Meteorological Department in Delhi.

The quake also shook large parts of Pakistan including Islamabad, where buildings swayed, and the largest city Karachi, where tremors also prompted many to flee buildings in terror.

The earthquake was not felt in the Iranian capital Tehran, however.

It comes a week after a strong earthquake struck near Iran's Gulf port city of Bushehr, killing at least 30 people and injuring 800 but leaving Iran's only nuclear power plant intact.

Equity benchmarks rallied after a sedate start on Wednesday, led by demand for banks and IT shares. The Sensex gained 188 points to close at 18414.45, and the Nifty rose 64 points to 5558.70.

Key equity benchmarks ended a listless day of trade in the red. The BSE benchmark Sensex ended down 12.45 points at 18437.78, after touching an intraday high of 18,504.48. The NSE benchmark Nifty closed down 10.30 points at 5542.95.

Shares of Bharti Airtel ended up nearly 4 percent after the Supreme Court on Monday, allowed India’s largest telecom operator, along with Vodafone and Idea Celluar, to maintain pacts until April 11 allowing them to offer 3G services outside their licensed zones.

The telecommunications ministry had asked Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular to end the pacts, which the government says are illegal. It also imposed penalties on the companies. The court will hear the case again on April 11. The dispute over the 3G pacts is one of several regulatory challenges hurting carriers in the world's second-biggest mobile phone market.

TVS Motor ended up 9.93 percent on news of its tie-up with German automaker BMW AG's motorcycle division to jointly develop bikes that will give the Indian automaker access to BMW technology as it looks to stem its falling market share.

Equity benchmarks ended marginally higher Monday even as macro indicators showed that the economy is yet to turn. The Sensex rose 29 points to close at 18865 and the Nifty gained 22 points to close at 5704.

Mid and small cap shares were the star performers of the day. Stocks from the realty and capital goods sectors did well, while auto, metal and FMCG sectors struggled. DLF, Cairn India, Reliance Infra, Jaiprakash Associates and Dr Reddys Labs were top gainers on the Nifty. Sesa Goa, Jindal Steel, Bajaj Auto, TCS and NMDC were top losers.
