The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega,
has rescheduled the 2015 elections to March 28 and April 11, following advice from security chiefs in the country.
Jega said the electoral body is ready to go ahead with the polls but the boko haram insurgency in the country neccessiated the postponement. He said, the Presidential and National Assembly elections billed for February 14 will now hold on March 28 while governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will hold on April 11.

A Canadian university is offering fans of Cristiano Ronaldo the opportunity to take a course in the Real Madrid star.

The University of British Columbia Okanagan is enrolling for a fourth-year sociology module on Ronaldo due to his popularity and influence on Portuguese and global society.

Luis LM Aguiar, associate professor of sociology in UBC Okanagan’s Irving K. Barber School of Arts and Sciences, said: "Sociology is nothing if not the delving into the processes of structuring identities and experiences and exposing the social forces that push these processes.

"In this case, I'm interested in how Ronaldo has been used to construct several discourses about who he is, what makes him distinct as a footballer, what is his relationship to Portugal, Madeira (his hometown) and indeed Portuguese identity."

During the semester-long course, students will examine the stereotypical image of Ronaldo and the Portuguese diaspora.

"Ronaldo is said to embody features and characteristics of speed, strength, competetiveness, dogged work ethic, discipline, and adaptability," added Aguiar on news.ok.ubc.ca.

"These features are also in a sense 'very Portuguese' since the Portuguese outside the homeland are nothing if not constructed as hard workers, disciplined and determined. Even as a global athlete transcending geographical boundaries, Ronaldo cannot escape the stereotypical constructions of 'the Portuguese'.

"My two greatest passions are football and critical sociology. A course on Cristiano Ronaldo gives me the opportunity to combine the two.

"While I’m an admirer of Ronaldo, I’m also a sociologist interested in understanding the social and economic forces driving the various constructions of this athlete and what this says about our contemporary values and culture."

Ronaldo is not the first Madrid name to become the subject of higher education. Staffordshire University offered students the chance to take a module in 'David Beckham studies' prior to the former England captain's move from Manchester United to Spain.
The only Al-Qaeda plotter convicted over the 9/11 attacks has told American lawyers that members of the Saudi royal family donated millions to the terror group in the 1990s.

French citizen Zacarias Moussaoui, dubbed the “20th hijacker,” made the revelations in court papers filed in a New York federal court by lawyers for victims of the attacks who accuse Saudi Arabia of supporting Al-Qaeda.

He said he created a digital database of Al-Qaeda donors, including members of the royal family such as former intelligence chief Prince Turki al Faisal and Prince Bandar bin Sultan, who was Saudi ambassador to United States for 22 years until 2005.

Moussaoui said he met in Afghanistan an official from the Saudi embassy in Washington DC to discuss Al-Qaeda’s plots to attack the United States, and that he was supposed to meet the same man again in Washington for help on a plot to shoot down Air Force One.

He also claimed there were direct dealings between senior Saudi officials and bin Laden, saying he traveled to Saudi Arabia twice to deliver handwritten letters between the Al-Qaeda mastermind and senior Saudis, including Prince Turki.

The Saudi embassy in Washington DC denied the allegations.

“The September 11 attack has been the most intensely investigated crime in history and the findings show no involvement by the Saudi government or Saudi officials,” it said in a statement.

The embassy called Moussaoui “a deranged criminal whose own lawyers presented evidence that he was mentally incompetent,” and said his words had no credibility.

Moussaoui, who was found criminally responsible at his trial in 2006, pled guilty to plotting the deadliest terror attacks in US history and is incarcerated at a supermax prison in Colorado.

Across 127 pages of transcript, Moussaoui said the money from wealthy Saudi donors was “crucial” to Al-Qaeda in the late 1990s.

He talked about donations of two to three million dollars and said top-ranking officials were close to bin Laden through social connections.
matriculation ceremony of 2014/2015 admitted students revealed that the National Universities Commission (NUC) has abolished the pass degree in all Nigerian universities with effect from the 2013/2014 academic session.

According to him, this implies that the minimum pass mark for courses in the universities will now be 45 per cent, that is, D-grade instead of the previous 40 per cent which was E-grade while the minimum class of grade to be earned by the students will be now be Third Class,”

He, therefore, enjoined the students to work hard to earn their stay in the university.

Method of Application

All applicationsmustbe made through theuniversity at which you wish to study. You must check with them in the first instance for specific advice on eligibility and how to make an application, and for their own closing date.

To apply for a Commonwealth Shared Scholarship, you must use one of two methods (as instructed by the university you are applying to):

1.Via university: Applying to the university in the first instance using the university’s own application form. If selected, candidates will then be asked to submit an application to the CSC using the EAS. Any applications made via the EAS only and not directly to the university first will not be considered.

2.EAS only: Applying to both the university and the CSC at the same time using the Electronic Application System(EAS).Each university has its own arrangements for obtaining references and it is your responsibility to find out how you should submit your references to your chosen university.

It is not possible to submit an EAS application after the deadline that you will see when you open an application. If you are applying to more than one university and/or more than one Master’s course, you may submit as many EAS applications as you require.

Before you start your application, you should read the ‘How to Apply Guide’ (a step-by-step guide on applications) and refer to the ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ for information. Both are found on the official website.

It is important to read carefully the ” Commonwealth Shared Scholarships 2015 Prospectus”(PDF) and also to visit the official website (link to it is below).

DEADLINES:

The specific deadlines set by the participating institutions varies each year (see ‘CSS prospectus’ for exact deadlines). Each university has its own closing date for applications. Any applications received after this date will be deemed ineligible.

Traditionally, deadline for application to participating universities will vary between December of preceding year and April of year of award. The EAS will close to applicants on 16 April 2015 and no further applications can be submitted after that date. Candidates should note that most university closing dates fall before 16 April and you must submit your application by the date advised by the university to which you are applying.

Candidates must complete their application via the EAS by 16 April 2015 at the latest, in order to be nominated to the CSC by their host university.

PLEASE NOTE:

Candidates should note that institutions are asked to forward their nominations to the CSC no later than 30 April each year; where institutions have not specified a closing date, candidates should contact the institution to ascertain the latest date the institution is willing to accept applications.

Applications should be made directly to the institutions at which candidates wish to study. The sponsoring institutions will be the judges of academic calibre and will forward their nominations to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission for its agreement. Institutions will normally advise candidates of the result not later than July.

Candidates should note that although they may apply to more than one institution, only one offer of award may be accepted.

All universities are asked to forward their nominations to the CSC no later than 30 April 2015 using the EAS.The CSC will not accept any applications which are not submitted via the EAS to a university.

Contact

All enquiries about making an application and eligibility should be addressed to the university at which you wish to study and through which you should therefore apply for a ‘Commonwealth Shared Scholarship’, not to the CSC. The university will advise you on eligibility issues and how to make an application (contact details are given in the ‘CSS prospectus’).

Application Deadline:16 April 2015

Open to International students: Yes

The Federal Government had said it will soon commence the distribution of one million smart meters to consumers across the country.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Power, Dr Godknows Boladei Igali, made this known at a forum to proffer solutions to effective billing System in Lagos.

Dr Godknows said at the forum that the Federal Government was also seeking other ways at reducing technical and commercial losses in a view to satisfy the electricity needs of its people and boosting power supply.

Prior to this, the Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, had said that the private sector owners of the electricity distribution companies inherited a lot of customers who had no meters.

This was in response to the complaints of power consumers across the country.

Prof. Chinedu said, “The private sector inherited a customer base in which 50 per cent do not have meters. Nigeria has the highest per capital electricity theft in the world.

“That is why we are now doing smart meters and we are moving to a place where the meters will be mounted on poles, because something has got to be done fast.

“As a result of the burden on the DISCOs due to meter issues, the President has provided funding to give over one million meters to Nigerians to reduce the gap and then allow the DISCOs ensure that all customers are given meters.”

On when Nigerians would start getting the meters, Nebo said, “The fact is that the funding has been approved by Mr. President and the funds would be released very soon.

“These meters are being procured and I do think that in the next couple of months, you will begin to see them because the mechanism still needs to be developed on how they would be shared to the Distribution Companies.

“They (DISCOs) will distribute and install these meters and these are all being worked out. Some people may not be happy to give you meters, but we think we should continue to insist that every consumer must be given a meter because the only way to stop estimated billing is to provide these meters.”
It was learnt that Federal University of Technology, Akure, will soon establish a medical school as well as a teaching hospital to complement its School of Basic Sciences.

This was made known by the Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Technology, Akure, Prof. Adebiyi Daramola, on Monday following the National Universities Commission’s approval granted to the university to establish a School of Health and Health Technology.
According to him, the new departments will take off next academic session with courses, such as Physiology, Anatomy, Dental Technology and Optometry.

In his words, “We’ve received the nod to set up departments of Anatomy and Physiology having previously established a Department of Biochemistry.

So, we are starting with degrees in the basic medical sciences and ultimately to end up with a teaching hospital. These two new departments are precursors of a medical school because we already have Biochemistry in the School of Sciences.

‘‘Besides, we cannot have health-related courses without having the core, which is medicine. You cannot have optometry and other ancillary courses without a Teaching Hospital, which is at the core. Some of the courses we are starting with are basic medical sciences.

If you are familiar with the training of medical doctors, they start with what is called basic medical sciences. It is when they are well-grounded in these, that they go to the clinical,” he said.
