The Independent Electoral Commission, INEC, has removed the names of Ahmed Yayari and Daniel Woyengikuro from its portal as Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, National Treasurer and National Financial Secretary, respectively.

A check by DAILY POST shows that both names have also been replaced with Odeyemi Mackson Oladiran and Eyim Donatus Henry as the new executives.

Yayari and Woyengikuro who are part of the Makinde-backed Turaki faction while Odeyemi and Eyim are members of the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike’s faction, which is also the recognised faction of the PDP.

INEC had earlier recognised Wike’s faction by putting the names of Abdulrahman Mohammed as the National Chairman and Samuel Anyanwu as the National Secretary, but had left the names of Yayari and Woyengikuro as part of the executives.

With the recent update on its portal, all executives of the PDP on INEC’s portal are now aligned with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

The Super Eagles have also lost once in regulation time in 24 matches since Chelle took charge of the team in January 2025.

World Cup-bound Portugal are expected to be a tough nut to crack for the three-time African champions but Ndidi insisted that they are ready for the challenge.

“It will be a very good test for us, we faced the first test against Poland, and Portugal is a great team with great players as well,” Ndidi told a press conference in Leiria on Tuesday.

“It will be a massive test for us as a group, to our vision, to our aim as a team, to our growth. It will definitely be a good test for us .

“We don’t know care who are playing, even we are playing against the biggest countries in the world, the most important thing is that as players we are ready to win. We look forward to taking our philosophy, and strategy to the game.”

Portugal thrashed the Super Eagles 4-0 in the first meeting between both countries four years ago.

A commercial bus driver lost his life on Tuesday following a fatal multiple-vehicle accident at Cele inward Oshodi area of Lagos.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, confirmed the incident in a statement issued by the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment of the agency, Adebayo Taofiq.

According to the statement, the crash involved a commercial mini bus popularly known as “Korokpe” and a Toyota Tundra pickup truck with registration number EPE 554 YC.

Initial findings by security operatives at the scene showed that the driver of the commercial bus suffered severe injuries from the impact of the collision and died instantly.

LASTMA officials who were on routine traffic monitoring along the corridor were said to have quickly moved to the scene to coordinate emergency response efforts, control traffic movement and prevent further obstruction on the busy route.

The agency explained that its officers worked together with personnel of the Nigeria Police Force from the Cele-Ijesha Division to recover the remains of the deceased driver.

The body was later released to members of his family within the area.

The statement added that the damaged vehicles involved in the accident were promptly evacuated from the road by LASTMA officials to restore normal traffic flow and ensure public safety.

The vehicles were later handed over to the police for detailed investigation to determine both the immediate and remote causes of the accident as well as possible legal responsibilities.

“The vehicles were thereafter handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for exhaustive investigation into both the immediate and remote causes of the crash, with a view to determining liability and facilitating any necessary legal proceedings,” the statement said.

Despite the disruption caused by the crash, traffic movement was restored along the corridor following swift intervention and traffic management measures put in place by LASTMA personnel.

Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, sympathised with the family of the deceased and urged motorists, especially commercial drivers, to always drive responsibly and obey traffic regulations.

Health stakeholders and experts have raised concerns over the deployment and consumption of Genetically Modified Organism, GMO, foods in Nigeria, alleging that they could contribute to the spread of cancer and other terminal illnesses in Africa’s most populous country.

The concerns were expressed on Tuesday during a one-day media training on biosafety and agroecology in Nigeria attended by journalists, including DAILY POST.

The training focused on Nigeria’s food future, biosafety regulations, and the perceived negative impacts of GMO crops on health, biodiversity, and food security.

Recall that in March 2026, the National Committee on Naming, Registration, and Release of Crop Varieties, Livestock Breeds, and Fisheries approved and registered four new transgenic cotton varieties without requisite clearance from the National Biosafety Management Agency, NBMA.

The development came amid growing national debate over the deployment of GMO crops in Nigeria. The House of Representatives had also conducted an investigative hearing on the introduction of GMOs into the country’s agricultural system.

DAILY POST reports that the adoption of GMO crops has continued to generate mixed reactions among scientists, policymakers, farmers, and civil society groups.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Ifeanyi Casmir, a health expert, cautioned Nigerians against embracing GMO foods, warning that the country’s major staple crops could become controlled by proprietary interests.

“Now, the worry we have is the quest to take our staple foods, cassava, maize, beans, and cowpea, which Nigeria is one of the leading producers of globally, and to now modify them and make them proprietary. And our farmers, smallholder farmers, which globally is being agreed upon by the FAO and other agencies, are the feeders—those who produce the food that feeds the world.

“Over 80 percent of GMO crops in Nigeria and in other parts of Africa and the world depend on the use of herbicides and pesticides.

“Are you aware that 7 out of every 13 herbicides used currently in our country, including with the ban on it, have been known to cause cancer and are considered highly hazardous pesticides?” he said.

Also speaking, Programme Director at Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF), Nnimmo Bassey, said concerns over biodiversity loss and food security continue to drive opposition to GMO crops.

“So key issues, key reasons why we are still on this campaign, are the fact that GMOs can contaminate Nigeria’s genetic resources and can bring about loss of biodiversity, which will then critically impact Nigeria’s food security, right?

“And we’ve had the Cotton Farmers Association of Nigeria come out to say that the GMOs do not have a substantial or significant advantage over the conventional varieties. But at the same time, these GMOs are causing soil degradation, right? So after planting the crops, farmers have reported that the soils are no longer supporting the local varieties. So this is a situation that we don’t want to become mainstream in Nigeria,” Bassey stated.

Similarly, the executive director of Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA), Akinbode Oluwafemi, urged the federal government to exercise caution in its approach to GMO adoption.

“There are global concerns over the health implications of GMOs. And so many countries have taken precautionary principles against GMOs.

“We don’t want the Nigerian government to open again our food system to an unproven science. There is an attempt to takeover our food environment by big corporations outside our chores,” he said.

According to available data, cancer cases have continued to rise in Nigeria, with about 128,000 new cases reported annually.

The stakeholders collectively urged the Nigerian government to urgently review its GMOs policy and stronger support for biodiversity, agroecology, and indigenous seed systems as better alternatives to GMOs.

The Kwankwasiyya Movement has dismissed reports of the exclusion of of its members as candidates for the 2027 election by the Kano State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC.

Spokesperson for the group, Habibu Mohammed, made this rebuttal on Tuesday in an interview on Trust TV.

Mohammed said no candidates, including those from the Kwankwasiyya Movement and other groups, complained of exclusion.

“When there is contestation, naturally there are going to be a lot of issues with certain people that might not actually find their ways, but I believe that a process was built where consensus candidate emerged across the state, and within that particular process, there were never a candidate from anywhere that have complained of any kind of exclusion.

“All candidates, including those from the Kwankwasiyya Movement, and those who recently come from other political parties, partook into that process.

“We are seeing how other candidates that recently joined the party were part of the consensus, and the real aim is to actually ensure that candidates that have the capacity to win election, bring in votes and help the party develop are the ones that have emerged through that particular process.

“Until the end of the process, there were never any complaint from anybody, and to us, we believe that we have complied both with the party guidelines and at the same time with that of the INEC,” he said.

He said: “Your Excellency I have come to this road inspection At least not less than 10 times to see if they will keep to the promise that they have made and they have kept to the promise.

“I want to sincerely thank CGC, this means that nothing is impossible if we are determined , committed to achieve results.

“Your Excellency, it may interest you to know that this is where we have Apo mechanics village, so many governments have made promises to the informal sector that they would move them out to a more comfortable area in order to decongest this road.

“All those have been empty promises and I’m sure that those who carry out business in that village will today confirm that the promise Mr President made to them when he started inaugurating projects in his first tenure, if we want to be conservative, at least 80% of projects that we have completed are projects initiated by various administrations. That is leadership.

“Some people would have said there is no need for that, let us start our own but Mr President understands that these projects.”

Veteran Nigerian actor, Abdul Salam Taofeek, professionally known as Tioruju Mondusi, has shared his most painful experience in life.

The actor made the sad experience public during in an interview on African A-List podcast.

When asked if there’s anyone who had offended him and he hasn’t forgiven because of the pain, he said, “The only person that did the most painful thing to me in life is my wife. The incident brought tears from my eyes. She’s late now, may God forgive her.

“I went to a location about five years ago and I didn’t meet her at home when I returned. As at the time, she was nine months pregnant with our fifth child. I was unable to reach her on the phone to know her whereabouts until two days later when her number went through. After getting in touch with her she refused to tell me her whereabouts.

“It was when I visited her mother’s house to complain that I realized she had done an introduction with another man who is already married with four kids. After seeing the photo frame, I called to abuse her. That was when she returned to the house to abuse me and asked who told me that I’m the owner of the pregnancy.

“She gave birth a few days later and requested to do the naming ceremony in my house after she had openly said the baby is not mine. That was when I got angry and arrested her alongside the man and his friend that came to beg me.

“Following my refusal to allow the naming to take place at my compound, she took me to court for the dissolution of our marriage. It was in the court that she confessed that the third and the last child were not mine. She has been going out with the man for many years. She died last year from depression after the man she left me for later abandoned her to face his family because he is already married with four children before the incident. He is from Ijebu in Ogun State.”

President Bola Tinubu has expressed confidence that the newly commissioned Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Zonal Directorate Office in Ekiti State will strengthen Nigeria’s fight against corruption, economic crimes and illicit financial activities.

Tinubu stated this on Tuesday in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State capital, during the commissioning of the Ekiti Zonal Directorate Office Complex of the EFCC.

Tinubu, represented by the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, said the establishment of the zonal office will strengthen the country’s anti-corruption institutions in ensuring that economic and financial crimes are effectively tackled at the grassroots.

He stressed that no nation could attain sustainable development if corruption was allowed to undermine public institutions and public trust.

Shettima commended EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, and the management of the Commission for their commitment and determination in prosecuting the anti-corruption war.

The Vice President described the new facility as a state-of-the-art complex that would further motivate EFCC personnel to intensify efforts against economic and financial crimes, which he identified as major impediments to national development.

He equally commended the government and people of Ekiti State for supporting the establishment of the facility and urged officers deployed to the new office to discharge their duties with professionalism and integrity.

He said, “The institutions we build and the pace at which we invest in them matter greatly. No nation can rise above the integrity of its public systems because development is defeated when corruption is allowed to stand between citizens and the promises of the state.

“The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was created to defend that promise, to protect our economy from criminal enterprise, and to remind every citizen that public trust is sacred.

“It therefore gives me great pleasure, on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, to be part of the commissioning of the Ekiti Zonal Directorate Office Complex, marking a new chapter in the history of the agency. I commend the Executive Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Ola Olukoyede and his team for their steadfastness, commitment and vigor in the aggressive pursuit of the anti-corruption war.

“Their work affirms our conviction that the fight against corruption must be organized, sustained, and supported by the right institutions, the right tools, and the right working environment. The present administration considers it important that law enforcement agencies, which are critical to our collective safety, security, prosperity, and general well-being, have the necessary facilities to enhance their efficiency.

“I am confident that this state-of-the-art facility will further motivate the staff of the EFCC to rededicate themselves to combating economic and financial crimes, which remain major obstacles to our nation’s progress.

“Investing in the capacity and welfare of officers of anti-corruption agencies, particularly the EFCC, is a strategic national imperative. The Commission occupies a central position in both our economic reform agenda and our national security architecture.

“Through aggressive asset tracing and recovery, the Commission has made resources available for critical social investment programmes such as the Student Loan Scheme, NELFUND and CREDICORP, the consumer credit scheme.

“The prosecution of several high-profile corruption cases, including the conviction of a former minister and a former Managing Director of a national investment bank, sends a clear message that there are no hiding places for the corrupt. These measures demonstrate that Nigeria will not tolerate corruption and that offenders will be punished under our laws.

“I encourage the EFCC and sister agencies, including the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), to sustain the present tempo until corruption is reduced to the barest minimum in our national life.

“We will continue to invest in strengthening anti-corruption agencies through conducive working environments, competitive welfare packages, operational independence, and adequate training opportunities. The sacrifices made in defence of our nation’s well-being will not be taken for granted”.

Earlier, EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, described the commissioning of the office complex as a major milestone in the Commission’s institutional development and anti-corruption mandate.

Olukoyede said the office was established to close operational gaps in the coverage of Ekiti and Ondo states, which were previously supervised by distant EFCC zones.

He expressed gratitude to President Tinubu, the National Assembly, the Ekiti State Government and Nigerians for supporting the project, assuring residents that the Commission’s presence in the zone should not be viewed as a source of fear.

Olukoyede pledged that fraudsters, cybercriminals and perpetrators of illegal mining activities would find no safe haven within the zone.

According to him, proceeds from recovered assets have been channelled into national development programmes, including the student loan scheme, consumer credit initiatives and the establishment of public institutions

He charged officers posted to the Ekiti Zonal Directorate to justify the investment by demonstrating professionalism, dedication and measurable performance.

“The chink is now permanently covered with this modern office complex, which has statutory responsibility to take the crusade against corruption to the people of Ekiti and Ondo States.

“If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear. When the EFCC knocks on your door, it may simply be to seek your support in the fight against corruption.

“Success in the fight against corruption is impossible without the support of the people. This is your zone; own it and run with it,” he added.

Also speaking, the Governor of Ekiti State, Biodun Oyebanji, hailed President Bola Tinubu for his commitment towards the development of Ekiti, saying the establishment of EFCC office in the state will reduce economic crimes and boost the economy.

The National Examinations Council, NECO, has alerted the public to the activities of fraudsters operating fake online recruitment portals for the engagement of examination supervisors.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Azeez Sani, the Council said the fraudulent platforms are requesting applicants to submit details of their academic credentials and make payments before being considered for recruitment.

NECO clarified that it does not demand any payment from teachers seeking to serve as supervisors during the forthcoming 2026 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) Internal.

The Council also explained that, in line with recommendations of the Ministerial Committee on the Improvement of Quality of Examination in Nigeria, it has migrated from the traditional analogue method of recruiting supervisors and assistant supervisors to a fully electronic process.

According to the statement, qualified pensionable teachers on Grade Level 12 and above, who are at least 30 years old and interested in serving as supervisors for the 2026 SSCE Internal examination, are required to apply directly through the official NECO recruitment portal.

NECO emphasized that the recruitment process is fully automated and does not require the involvement of any third party.

The Council noted that the new digital recruitment system is designed to curb fraud, strengthen examination supervision, reduce examination malpractice, and promote fairness, transparency, and credibility in the selection process.

NECO further disclosed that more than 22,000 supervisors will be recruited for the 2026 SSCE Internal examination, which is scheduled to commence on June 15, 2026.

The examination body then urged members of the public to disregard unofficial recruitment portals and avoid making payments to individuals or groups claiming to facilitate the recruitment process.

Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, says nobody has what it takes to prevent him from visiting Oyo State or any part of Nigeria.

Gumi said this on Tuesday in a post on his Facebook page, noting that his visit to Ibadan had been wrongly linked to what he described as “dirty local politics” in the South-West.

The cleric has faced criticism amid allegations that his visit was part of an attempt to promote northern Islamic ideologies and Islamise Oyo State.

Responding, Gumi stated that he was not invited to Ibadan by any Muslim individual or group in the South-West.

According to the Islamic cleric, he attended an event in the city as a representative of northern Islamic scholars.

He said, “I quite understand now how Islamophobia is shaping politics in (South-West) and why I was unnecessarily dragged into their dirty local politics.

“I was in Ibadan, not by the invitation of any South-West Muslim individual or group, but as a representative of the Coalition of Northern Muslim Ulama.

“Can anybody stop me from going anywhere in Nigeria?”

His reaction followed controversy over claims that abductors of some victims in the Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State demanded the introduction of Sharia law in the state as part of the conditions for their release.

For Our Future’, held in Abeokuta on Tuesday, Dr Iniobong Abiola-Awe, Director, Department of Climate Change, Federal Ministry of Environment, said globally, climate change remains a serious concern, arguing that traditional cooking methods cause indoor air pollution, health risks, deforestation and climate change.

Abiola-Awe who was represented by Mrs Dolapo John-Akhigbe, a principal officer in the ministry, added that the Federal Executive Council approved the National Clean Cooking Policy on March 25, 2024, and launched it at the 17th National Council on Environment, with the aim to give all Nigerian households and institutions access to clean cooking energy by 2030.

In her welcome address, the First Lady of Ogun State, Mrs Bamidele Abiodun, described the initiative as a practical demonstration of climate resilience, public health improvement and women’s empowerment.

Mrs Abiodun noted that millions of Nigerians still depend on firewood, charcoal and other traditional biomass fuels for cooking, stressing that while they serve many families, they also come with significant consequences.

The First Lady also applauded the state government for embracing the RDF, stressing that as the state continues to industrialize, innovations as such will help achieve effective waste management and cleaner energy generation while supporting sustainable economic growth.

“Instead of allowing large volumes of combustible waste to accumulate in dumpsites where they contribute to environmental pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, such waste can be processed into alternative fuel for industrial and energy applications,” she stated.

In his keynote address, the Commissioner for Environment, Dr Ola Oresanya, argued that despite the progress made, challenges such as climate change, urbanization, industrial pollution, deforestation and ecosystem degradation still require stronger collaboration, innovation and sustained commitment.

Oresanya noted that the ministry is advancing initiatives to strengthen climate governance, expand environmental data systems, improve monitoring technologies, promote sustainable industrial practices, and deepen public-private partnerships.

He maintained that environmental sustainability cannot be achieved by government alone, and called for collaboration and collective responsibility.

“A major component of our climate strategy is the promotion of Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) as a sustainable waste-to-energy solution. RDF converts combustible municipal solid waste into alternative fuel for domestic and industrial use, thereby reducing landfill pressure, cutting greenhouse gas emissions, and reducing dependence on fossil fuels,” Oresanya added.

He, however, assured that the ministry would continue to equip young people with knowledge and skills in environmental stewardship, waste reduction, biodiversity conservation, and climate action, to ensure sustainability for future generations.

Also speaking, the Head of Service, Mr. Olanrewaju Saka, asserted that the year’s theme is a call for all to learn from nature and adopt sustainable practices that will secure a better future for generations yet unborn.

He charged staff of the Ogun State Ministry of Environment and its agencies to remain dedicated, innovative, and proactive in the discharge of their duties, stating that environmental future of the state depends significantly on their commitment, professionalism, and integrity.

The head of service also urged the beneficiaries of the clean cooking stoves to make effective use of the appliances and become advocates of cleaner and healthier cooking practices within their communities.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Tunji Disu, has charged senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force to remain proactive, intelligence-driven and adaptive in addressing the evolving security challenges confronting the nation.

The charge was given during the monthly conference with strategic senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force held at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Peacekeeping Centre, Force Headquarters, Abuja, on Tuesday, 9th June 2026.

The conference brought together Deputy Inspectors-General of Police, Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, Commissioners of Police, and other senior officers to review the nation’s security situation and assess ongoing policing strategies.

Addressing the officers, the Inspector-General of Police noted that the country continues to face security threats ranging from kidnapping, armed robbery, cult-related violence, terrorism, banditry, farmer-herder conflicts, and cyber-enabled crimes. He emphasized the need for stronger leadership, improved coordination, and effective operational responses to ensure the Force remains ahead of emerging criminal threats.

The IGP disclosed that since the last conference held in May 2026, the Force has recorded significant operational successes, including the arrest of eight suspected terrorists, 55 kidnapping suspects, 65 armed robbery suspects, 29 murder suspects and 42 suspected cultists.

He further revealed that 88 kidnapped victims were rescued, while 114 firearms, 843 rounds of ammunition, and 28 stolen vehicles were recovered through various operations across the country.

The Inspector-General also directed Commissioners of Police nationwide to strengthen intelligence gathering, deepen community policing initiatives, and institutionalize regular stakeholder engagements with traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups, market associations, transport unions, and other critical community stakeholders. He stressed that public trust and community partnership remain indispensable to effective policing and crime prevention.

Reaffirming the Force’s commitment to professionalism and accountability, the IGP urged senior officers to lead by example, maintain discipline within their Commands, prioritize personnel welfare, and ensure strict compliance with established operational procedures. He further emphasized the importance of effective engagement with the media to enhance public understanding of policing activities and counter misinformation.

The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has clarified that official results of the party’s recently concluded primary elections are yet to be released nationwide.

The party made the clarification in a statement issued on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, while reacting to reports of removal of some candidates from the list of winners in Kano State.

Reports had emerged on Monday purporting that some candidates loyal to the NDC vice presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, were removed.

Clearing the air, NDC said it has not “released any official results of primary elections in any state”, urging the public and party members to “disregard any such list in circulation”.

The statement also confirmed that a “delegation of the national leadership of the Kwankwasiya Movement last night met with the national leader, His Excellency Senator Henry Seriake Dickson and the leadership of the NDC.

“The close door meeting was aimed at resolving the issues between the Kwankwasiya Movement and the legacy officials of NDC in Kano State.

“Senator Dickson and the NDC leadership are mediating in the process in order to enhance inclusion and participation by every party member.

“The NDC leadership will not impose candidates in Kano State, and indeed across the nation as the party cherishes the virtues of internal democracy.

“The meeting which lasted several hours was productive,” the statement added.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has warned that recent court rulings affecting aspects of its timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general election could disrupt preparations for the polls if not urgently clarified by appellate courts.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, raised the concerns on Tuesday during the Commission’s second quarterly consultative meeting with leaders of political parties in Abuja.

Amupitan disclosed that the Commission had already filed appeals against two judgments of the Federal High Court which questioned certain timelines contained in INEC’s timetable for the 2027 elections.

According to him, while the Commission respects the decisions of the courts, the judgments raise significant legal questions regarding the extent of INEC’s constitutional and statutory powers to coordinate and regulate electoral activities.

The Federal High Court in Abuja had delivered two major rulings invalidating key compressed timelines in the 2027 general election timetable released by INEC.

The courts ruled that while INEC has the constitutional authority to issue and adjust election schedules, it cannot use administrative guidelines to shorten or override statutory windows guaranteed to political parties by the Electoral Act 2026

But Amupitan explained that in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/517/2026, Youth Party v. INEC, delivered on May 20, 2026, the court questioned some timelines contained in the Commission’s timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 General Election.

He added that in a subsequent judgment delivered on May 26, 2026, in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/720/2026, Social Democratic Party (SDP) v. INEC, the court affirmed the Commission’s authority to issue an electoral timetable but nullified certain timelines relating to the nomination and substitution of candidates.

“In view of the differing conclusions reached in the judgments and in order to ensure certainty and stability in preparations for the 2027 General Election, the Commission has filed appeals against the decisions and has taken the necessary legal steps to obtain authoritative pronouncements from the appellate courts,” Amupitan said.

The INEC chairman maintained that the activities contained in the Commission’s timetable are interrelated operational processes designed to guarantee the orderly, transparent and successful conduct of elections.

He noted that while the Electoral Act prescribes timelines for certain electoral activities, several other critical processes are not expressly provided for in the law but must be accommodated within the overall electoral calendar.

According to him, these include the submission and verification of party membership registers, monitoring of party primaries across the federation, uploading the names of winners of monitored primaries on the Commission’s designated portal, candidate nominations, printing of ballot papers and result sheets, training of election personnel, voter education programmes and the deployment of election materials.

“The absence of coordinated timelines for such activities would create uncertainty, disrupt election planning and undermine the Commission’s constitutional responsibility to organise, undertake and supervise elections in an efficient and credible manner,” he said.

Amupitan argued that environmental and logistical factors, including weather conditions, terrain, procurement of sensitive materials and configuration of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BVAS, require careful scheduling and coordination.

“The Commission therefore considers it imperative that all electoral activities be harmonised within a coherent and workable framework that promotes certainty, transparency, administrative efficiency and equal treatment of all political parties,” he added.

Despite the legal challenge, the INEC chairman assured political parties and the Nigerian public that the Commission remained committed to conducting the 2027 General Election in strict compliance with the Constitution, the Electoral Act and all lawful judicial pronouncements.

Speaking, National Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council, IPAC, Dr. Yusuf Mamman Dantalle, said the exclusion of indirect primaries from Nigeria’s electoral framework contributed significantly to disputes, tensions and administrative challenges experienced by political parties during their just-concluded primaries for the 2027 general election.

Dantalle said the implementation of Section 84(2) of the Electoral Act 2026, which limited political parties to consensus or direct primaries, created operational difficulties for parties and triggered avoidable internal conflicts.

According to him, the absence of indirect primaries removed a flexible option that previously allowed parties to manage internal competition and reduce tensions among aspirants.

“The experience of the just-concluded nomination exercise demonstrates that the removal of indirect primaries created considerable constraints for political parties,” he said.

He explained that many political parties were forced to adopt consensus arrangements despite having multiple aspirants who had already obtained nomination forms and expressed interest in contesting elections.

Dantalle noted that in several cases, aspirants were persuaded or in some instances pressured to step down after party leaders had already aligned behind preferred candidates, leading to dissatisfaction and subsequent legal disputes.

He said while some aspirants accepted the outcomes in the interest of party unity, others challenged their exclusion, arguing that genuine consensus must be voluntary and inclusive.

According to him, in some cases, parties limited access to nomination forms or failed to adequately publicise primary election schedules, steps he said were taken to avoid the complications associated with direct primaries.

Dantalle said these developments reflected unintended consequences of the current legal framework governing party nominations.

He urged the National Assembly to urgently review the Electoral Act 2026 to restore flexibility in the conduct of party primaries and strengthen internal democracy within political parties.

The IPAC chairman further expressed concern over the tight timeline given to parties to submit updated membership registers, including National Identification Number, NIN, saying some genuine members were excluded due to logistical challenges.

He said IPAC had earlier warned about the implications of certain provisions of the Electoral Act during its February 2026 General Assembly in Abuja, where it urged lawmakers to reconsider the ban on indirect primaries.

Dantalle said recent developments had validated those earlier concerns and called for urgent reforms to the electoral legal framework.

He claimed that in certain instances, parties restricted access to nomination forms or did not sufficiently publicize primary election schedules, actions he asserted were taken to circumvent the complications linked to direct primaries.

Dantalle indicated that these occurrences represented unintended outcomes of the existing legal structure governing party nominations.

He called upon the National Assembly to promptly reassess the Electoral Act 2026 to reinstate flexibility in the execution of party primaries and enhance internal democracy within political parties.

The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, NRC, Kayode Opeifa, says the death toll from the Warri–Itakpe train derailment has risen to five.

Opeifa, while confirming this on Tuesday, said emergency responders were swiftly deployed to the scene, with injured passengers evacuated to nearby medical facilities for treatment, while investigations into the cause of the derailment are ongoing.

He assured that safety assessments were being intensified across the rail network to prevent a recurrence.

According to him, relevant technical teams had been mobilised to determine the factors that led to the accident.

The NRC boss stressed that authorities were also working to support affected families, while efforts continue to restore normal operations along the corridor.

DAILY POST reports that the Warri–Itakpe rail line remains one of Nigeria’s major standard gauge routes, serving both passenger and freight movement across multiple states.

The derailment of the rail line occurred on Monday.

Young Nigerians on Tuesday staged a protest at the National Assembly in Abuja, calling for urgent action to tackle worsening insecurity across the country.

The march, which started from the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, was tagged “Nigerians Unite Against Terror”.

The convener, Isah Abubakar, said insecurity has become a nationwide problem affecting everyone.

“There are roads in Nigeria that, once it is 5 pm, you cannot pass through,” he said.

He added, “And those that are affected are not only members of the APC, ADC, PDP, NDC, and PRP, but they are also Nigerians.”

Abubakar also said, “The bandits are not selective. They don’t care about your religion, your tribe, your political party, or your tradition. It is something that affects us across religious and political lines.”

Calling for action, he said, “It is our responsibility as citizens to call the attention of those responsible for protecting lives and properties that enough is enough,” and added, “It is time to give us security; it is time to protect lives and properties; it is time to protect children; it is time to protect women from being raped.”

He also warned, “We can’t continue in a situation where our bush is being left for people who don’t know the value of life to take over it. Our demands are simple: end insecurity. It is time for proactiveness. It is time for sincerity of purpose by those who govern us.”

Another speaker, Austin Okhai, urged former security chiefs to step in.

“We call on former military leaders, former service chiefs, former directors of the DSS, former IGPs, and former NSCDC CGs to all collaborate in ensuring we have a country first,” he said.

He warned that insecurity is affecting politics and daily life, saying, “No political party can go on a rally when the people you mobilise cannot return to their homes.”

Okhai also claimed, “As I am talking to you now, the APC chairman in Kebbi is in the hands of bandits. The state is ruled by the APC. The bandits kidnap Muslims, Christians, and even traditional rulers. It is a crime that our former leaders are keeping quiet in the face of insecurity.”

He added, “The national assembly has the right to demand accountability; it is part of democracy. What we need now is the collaboration of all citizens,” and stressed, “If a soldier or a policeman comes to your house to apprehend a suspect and you hide the culprit, what magic will they perform?”

He further said, “The only power the bandits have over us is because they are armed with AK-47s. Even if we have state police and we do not arm them properly, it is still a waste of time” and referenced Kwara incidents involving forest guards.

Okhai concluded, “Our voices must be heard. We are here because insecurity persists. We urge Nigerians that if they see something, they say something and do something.”

The Red Dragons have been linked with Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson which could push Okonkwo down to second choice at the club.

According to an AllAboutLeagueOne, Leicester City are desparate to sign the former Arsenal shot stopper.

The Foxes were relegated to League One last season which could make them less attractive to the Nigerian.

Derby County, Bristol City, and Watford have all been linked with Okonkwo.
