Ogbeide Associates, Solicitors and Counsel, holding brief for the factional Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, requesting an investigation into the party’s Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, and factional National Chairman, Hon. Abdulrahman Mohammed, over a letter dated November 3, 2025, addressed to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

The petition alleges that the letter falsely claimed the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) had suspended Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum as Acting National Chairman and appointed Mohammed in his place.

According to the petition, the NWC’s 608th Emergency Meeting of November 1, 2025, held barely 48 hours before the letter was written, resolved to suspend Anyanwu himself, along with three other officers, over allegations of anti-party activities.

The petition stated that no NWC resolution, minutes, or attendance record has been produced showing that the committee ever resolved to suspend Ambassador Damagum or appoint Mohammed.

The petition further noted that the official attendance record of the 608th meeting shows that Anyanwu was absent, while Mohammed was present at the meeting.

It noted that Mohammed had direct, firsthand knowledge of the meeting’s actual outcome before the disputed letter was sent.

The petition also draws attention to a subsisting Federal High Court judgment of October 10, 2024 (Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/579/2024), which recognised Ambassador Damagum as Acting National Chairman and restrained INEC from acting on any document not bearing his signature—a judgment Senator Anyanwu himself had forwarded to INEC for compliance in November 2024.

The petition notes that the Court of Appeal, on March 9, 2026, affirmed the NWC’s suspension of Senator Anyanwu.

In addition to seeking an investigation of the two named individuals, the petition asks the Inspector-General to examine how INEC handled the November 3 letter, given that the commission was already in possession of both the subsisting court judgment and the NWC’s suspension resolution at the time.

“This petition is not about personalities. It is about whether public institutions can be misled with documents that do not reflect the true position of internal party processes, and whether such conduct will be investigated as the law requires,” counsel for the petitioner said.

The lawyers called on the Nigeria Police Force to treat the matter with urgency, while indicating that the petitioner stands ready to provide all supporting documentation, including the relevant court judgments and internal party records, to assist in the investigation.

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Olanipekun Olukoyede, has disclosed that investigations into 200 companies referred to the commission by the Corporate Affairs Commission, CAC, have uncovered significant findings.

Olukoyede made the disclosure on Thursday while receiving the CAC Board, led by its Chairman, Ibrahim M. Ida, during a courtesy visit to the EFCC headquarters in Abuja.

During the visit, Senator Ida expressed concern that only about 20 per cent of Point of Sale, POS, operators across the country are registered with the CAC, contrary to the provisions of the Companies and Allied Matters Act, CAMA, 2020 and the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Agent Banking Regulations, 2026.

He said emerging evidence indicates that proceeds of criminal activities, including ransom payments from kidnapping cases, are sometimes routed through unregistered POS terminals.

According to him, the situation underscores the need for stronger collaboration between the two agencies to safeguard Nigeria’s financial system.

The CAC chairman proposed three key areas of partnership with the EFCC, including data and intelligence sharing on suspicious companies, joint public sensitisation on corporate governance and financial crime risks, and capacity-building programmes for staff to address emerging threats linked to company law and economic crimes.

Responding, Olukoyede said more than 80 per cent of financial crimes in Nigeria are perpetrated through procurement fraud and the activities of registered companies.

He described the regulation of POS operators as a major challenge that requires urgent attention to protect the country’s financial ecosystem.

The EFCC chairman also called for a review of the existing Memorandum of Understanding between the commission and the CAC to strengthen cooperation and support broader reforms aimed at tackling financial crimes.

The Israeli military operations targeting Iran, Hamas, and Hezbollah are not winding down soon, according to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Speaking on Thursday at the IDF Combat Officers’ Graduation Ceremony at Training Base, Netanyahu told the new officers that there are more missions to complete.

“There are more things to do against Iran…against Hamas…against Hezbollah, and against drones,” he said. “We are working on this with full force, with full vigor.”

Netanyahu cited the elimination of Hamas commander, Izz al-Din al-Haddad, whom he called “one of the architects” of the October 7 attack, assessing Hamas’s capability is now low.

He recalled saying Israel “will change the face of the Middle East” a day after the incursion, adding that the IDF is doing so through the heroism of commanders, pilots, and soldiers.

Netanyahu described October 7 as the opening shot in the malicious plan of the enemies of Israel to destroy Israel, suffocate the nation, and cause it to collapse.

“We are in the midst of a prolonged multi-arena war,” the premier declared. “Its importance is no less than the importance of the War of Independence.”

Netanyahu further justified the removal of “an immediate existential threat,” saying if Israel had not acted, “Iran would have atomic bombs to destroy Israel today.”

Netanyahu added that “with an agreement or without an agreement, Iran will not have nuclear weapons,” as long as he remains the Prime Minister of Israel.

The Kwara State Government has expressed concern over the increasing number of unidentified commercial motorcycle riders entering the state, warning that the situation could worsen security challenges in some communities.

Speaking at an emergency security stakeholders’ meeting in Ilorin on Thursday, the Commissioner for Transportation, Aliyu Korasabi, urged transport union leaders to support the ongoing residents’ registration exercise.

Korasabi said, “We are witnessing an increasing influx of unidentified motorcycle operators into Kwara at a time when some communities are grappling with security challenges. This development requires urgent attention from all stakeholders.”

According to him, registering commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators will help security agencies identify genuine transport workers and expose criminals who may be posing as riders.

Activist Aisha Yesufu has explained why she turned down an offer to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking at a public lecture on citizens’ participation in governance at Veritas University in Abuja on Thursday, Yesufu said she rejected the ticket because about 20 people had already purchased nomination forms and were contesting for the position.

“About 20 people had picked up forms for the ticket and I was not going to be part of irregularities. I was not going to be part of that system even though it was going to benefit me,” she said.

She explained that accepting the ticket would have unfairly affected other aspirants who had spent money and effort pursuing the position.

“The reason I didn’t take it was because of the process. There were about 20 competent people from whom money had been collected during the process who would be shortchanged,” she stated.

Describing the arrangement as unfair, Yesufu said: “The process was unjust; in my view, it was criminal. If we claim to be guided by the law, then why should we do something unjust?”

She added that she would rather lose than benefit from an unfair political process.

“I have no problem with losing. I would rather stand with ordinary people than pursue titles and honours through an unfair process. That is how I have always lived my life,” she said.

She also urged young Nigerians to become more involved in politics, stressing that political participation should go beyond voting during elections.

He was speaking on the recent passage of the contentious State Police Bill by the Nigerian Senate to address insecurity in the country.

“I don’t think we should criminalize politicians, and I don’t want to engage in any conspiracy theory.

“The debates has been on since we started the campaign for restructuring in the country and set out a new phenomenon.

“How do we have more police stations? How do we employ more policemen and women without considering social security? Why are we not talking of creating employment for young people? Why are we not giving assistance to Nigerians that are vulnerable, extremely poor?

“An unless you address this problem holistically, creating a state police or local government police will not address the crisis of insecurity in the country,” he said.

The Plateau State House of Assembly has said it is ready to support the creation of state police, pledging to give the bill priority consideration whenever it is presented before lawmakers.

Speaker Naanlong Daniel gave the assurance on Thursday in Jos during a visit by the Plateau State Advisory Committee on State Police, led by retired Deputy Inspector General of Police Habila Joshak.

Daniel said the Assembly believes state policing would help address the insecurity affecting Plateau and other parts of Nigeria.

“The Assembly believes state policing will contribute significantly to ending the prolonged insecurity affecting parts of Plateau State and other regions of the country,” he said.

The Speaker noted that lawmakers have consistently backed the idea and would not hesitate to pass the bill when it reaches the House. He also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for efforts aimed at improving security across the country.

Daniel further assured the committee of the legislature’s full cooperation and readiness to provide the necessary legislative backing to ensure the success of the initiative.

Earlier, committee chairman Habila Joshak said Plateau’s long-standing security challenges make state police “a vital step toward strengthening security management, improving intelligence gathering, and restoring public confidence in law enforcement.”

He added that the committee could become “a reference point for other states across the federation” as discussions on state policing continue nationwide.

Joshak urged lawmakers to support the process, stressing that state police would help address security concerns at the community level and strengthen existing security structures.

The European Union Council on Thursday renewed the EU restrictive measures against Russia, citing its continuing “destabilizing actions” in Ukraine.

The extension for a further 12 months, until 31 July 2027, follows last week’s decision of the Council, where EU leaders agreed to lengthen the sanctions.

The economic measures, first introduced in 2014, were expanded in February 2022 after Russia commenced its “special military operation” in Ukraine.

The sanctions cover key sectors, including trade, finance, energy, dual-use technology, import or transfer of seaborne crude oil and certain petroleum products from Russia to the EU.

They also affect several financial institutions and crypto service providers in Russia and in third states, as well as broadcasting activities and licenses of Kremlin-backed media outlets.

The EU has vowed to sustain the measures as long as Russia “continues its illegal actions and violations of the fundamental rules of international law, including the prohibition on the use of force.”

The Council, meanwhile, reaffirmed its firm and unwavering support for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.

The EU said it will continue to provide, alongside partners and allies, comprehensive political, financial, economic, humanitarian, military and diplomatic support to Ukraine and its people.

Since February 2022, the 27-member bloc has adopted 20 “unprecedented and hard-hitting” packages of sanctions in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Information and Communication Technology and supervising DIG for the South-West Zone, DIG Fayoade Mustapha Adegoke, has reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to maintaining peace, strengthening public confidence and ensuring effective policing across Osun State.

Speaking during an official duty tour of the Osun State Police Command in Osogbo on Thursday, Adegoke conveyed the goodwill of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and commended the command for its efforts in sustaining a relatively peaceful environment in the state.

Addressing officers, stakeholders and members of the media, the DIG described the visit as both official and personally significant, noting his connection to Osun State while stressing that the safety and security of residents remained his primary responsibility.

Adegoke acknowledged recent security concerns, particularly cult-related incidents recorded during the ongoing electioneering period, but expressed confidence in the command’s proactive operations aimed at curbing criminal activities and maintaining public order.

He said the command had recorded successes through the recovery of arms and ammunition, as well as other security measures designed to prevent crime and enhance public safety.

The DIG commended the Commissioner of Police in Osun State, Ibrahim Gotan, for his purposeful leadership and notable operational achievements, while also praising officers and personnel for their professionalism and dedication to duty.

Reiterating the position of the Nigeria Police Force during the democratic process, Adegoke stressed that the institution would remain professional and apolitical in carrying out its constitutional responsibilities.

“Our allegiance is to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and not to any political interest. Officers must remain impartial, disciplined and professional in the discharge of their responsibilities.”

The DIG also appreciated the support provided by the Osun State Government through the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Osun State chapter, including the provision of operational vehicles and other interventions that have enhanced policing capacity across the state.

He commended the National Association of Retired Police Officers of Nigeria, the Police Community Relations Committee and other stakeholders for supporting community policing initiatives, intelligence gathering and efforts to strengthen public trust in the police.

Calling for sustained collaboration, Adegoke urged traditional rulers, community leaders, youth groups, religious organisations, civil society groups and residents to continue supporting security agencies through the provision of timely and credible information.

As part of the visit, the DIG paid a courtesy call on the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji Olanipekun, Larooye II, through whom he expressed appreciation to traditional rulers across the state for their cooperation with security agencies.

He disclosed that additional police personnel had been deployed to Osun to address security challenges, offered condolences to the families of victims of recent incidents and assured residents that political activities would not be allowed to disrupt the peace being enjoyed in the state.

The Abia State Government has appealed to the people of Abia State and other South-East states to do everything possible to save the Igbo language, culture and history from dying.
The state government made the appeal on Thursday in Umuahia during the Canvas and Culture Festival organised by the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy.

The Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, Matthew Ekwuribe, while addressing secondary school students and other participants at the workshop and exhibition, said the Abia State Government was doing everything possible to ensure that the Igbo language, culture and history do not die but are preserved and strengthened.

He observed that some young people of Igbo extraction are unable to express themselves in the Igbo language or demonstrate knowledge of the culture, but said the state government had taken steps to prevent such a trend from taking root in Abia.

The commissioner said bold steps had been taken by Governor Alex Otti’s administration to rehabilitate the Civil War heritage sites, including the Ojukwu Bunker, the National War Museum and other cultural and historical sites in the state.

Ekwuribe also said the Arts and Culture Festival was designed to discover future artistic talents in the state, adding that it would help tackle unemployment among young people and boost the state’s economy.

Speaking at the event, Abia State Governor Alex Otti charged secondary school students and other young people in the state to embrace opportunities in the arts industry.

Otti, who was represented by his deputy, Ikechukwu Emetu, promised to sustain his administration’s support for the arts, culture and creative economy sectors in the state.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria has announced the restoration of electricity in parts of Lagos and its environs hours after the outage.

The spokesperson of TCN, Ndidi Mbah, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, announcing that Benin-Egbin 330 kilovolt transmission has been restored.

According to TCN, an electricity supply disruption had occurred around 8:19 am on 25th June 2026 in Lagos.

TCN explained that the national grid experienced voltage instability, which rapidly spread across the Lagos corridor, leading to the loss of some generating stations, causing transmission line outages, and the subsequent interruption of electricity supply to Lagos and its environs.

However, the interventions of the minister of power, Joseph Tegbe, and other agencies in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry resulted in the quick resolution of the fault.

“We are pleased to report that one of the affected lines, the Benin–Egbin 330kV transmission line, which was opened during the incident, has already been restored and is currently transmitting bulk electricity. A combined team of TCN engineers from the Benin and Omotoso subregions are, however, working assiduously to rectify the remaining faults on the 330kV Benin-Omotoso transmission line to ensure full restoration of bulk power supply to the Lagos complex as quickly as possible.

TCN added that it is working to restore the Benin-Omotoso transmission 330 kV line, which affected bulk power supply to customers of Eko Electricity Distribution Company and the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company.

“We urge all affected consumers to please exercise patience as we work to restore bulk power supply through the Benin – Omotoso transmission line. Updates will be provided as restoration progresses,” TCN stated.

Real Madrid manager, Jose Mourinho, has said he wants the players in his squad to get eliminated from the 2026 World Cup, so he could work with them in preseason.

Mourinho was speaking on the BeastModeOn podcast.

Madrid have players like Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior, Aurelien Tchouameni, Antonio Rudiger, Marc Cucurella, amongst others at the tournament.

With most of them looking likely to go far in the competition, it might leave Mourinho with little time to prepare for the new season.

““What am I looking forward to in the World Cup? I want Real Madrid players to lose.

“Because I want them back for pre-season with me in July!”

The Benue State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has distanced itself from Dr. Emmanuel Agbo, describing him as an impostor and political con artist over claims that he is the party’s governorship candidate for the 2027 elections.

The party made the clarification following the circulation of what it described as a fake Certificate of Return allegedly paraded by Agbo on social media to support his claim of emerging as the PDP governorship flagbearer.

In a statement issued by the party’s State Secretary, Comrade Dan Nyikwagh, the PDP categorically stated that Agbo is neither its governorship candidate nor has he ever been recognized as such for the 2027 general elections.

The party said any publication, video, or statement presenting Agbo as its candidate amounts to impersonation and an attempt to mislead the public.

“Emmanuel Agbo is an imposter and a political con artist peddling and sponsoring fake news for selfish and mischievous reasons,” the statement said.

The PDP urged media organisations, social media users, and members of the public to disregard Agbo’s claims, insisting that they are false and fraudulent.

The party further stated that Chief Michael Kaase Aondoakaa (SAN) remains its duly affirmed governorship candidate for the 2027 election, having emerged through what it described as a transparent and unanimous consensus process endorsed by party leaders, stakeholders, and members and monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to the statement, Aondoakaa’s emergence reflects the collective decision of the party and enjoys widespread support across the state.

The PDP also warned that it would not tolerate actions capable of creating confusion within its ranks, adding that legal and constitutional measures have already been initiated against Agbo and others allegedly involved in impersonation.

“Impersonating a party candidate is a serious offence, and the full weight of the law will be brought to bear on anyone engaging in such criminal conduct,” the party stated.

It called on security agencies, the media, and residents of Benue State to remain vigilant and dismiss any narrative portraying Emmanuel Agbo as the PDP governorship candidate.

The party reaffirmed its commitment to what it described as rebuilding Benue State under the leadership of Chief Michael Kaase Aondoakaa, SAN.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has constituted an administrative investigation committee to examine the circumstances surrounding the death of a student of St. Louis College, Kano.

The development was announced in a statement issued on Thursday by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

According to the statement, the committee will be chaired by the Commissioner for Education, Gwani Alhaji Ali Haruna Makoda.

Other members include Barrister Aminu Hussain, Special Adviser on Justice and Constitutional Matters; Barrister Hamza Dantani; Executive Secretary of the Private and Voluntary Institutions Management Board, Baba Abubakar Umar; Director-General, Media and Publicity, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa; private school proprietor, Imam Ahmed Zubairu; and the Chairman of the Parent-Teacher Association of St. Louis College.

Also appointed are Hafsat Aminu Adhama, Senior Special Assistant on Girl Child Education, who will serve as secretary, and Binta Abdullahi Mukhtar, Under Secretary/REPA, as assistant secretary.

The statement said the committee has been mandated to conduct a comprehensive and independent investigation into the incident.

“The committee has been tasked with conducting a thorough and independent investigation into the circumstances that led to the death of the student, establishing a clear timeline of events and identifying any lapses in supervision, welfare management or institutional procedures,” the statement said.

According to the government, the committee’s terms of reference include examining the events leading to the student’s death, reviewing relevant medical records and reports, investigating the social environment within the college, and assessing allegations of bullying, coercion or unauthorised disciplinary practices among students.

It will also evaluate existing complaint and reporting mechanisms, review staff compliance with student supervision guidelines, and recommend reforms to disciplinary and boarding school management systems.

“The committee will also review staff compliance with student supervision guidelines, recommend reforms to disciplinary and boarding school management systems, and propose measures to strengthen emergency medical response procedures and student safety standards across schools in the state,” the statement added.

“He directed members of the committee to discharge their responsibilities with fairness, diligence and utmost professionalism in the interest of justice and the safety of all students,” the statement said.

The mysterious death of Maimuna Sani (Nihal), a 14-year-old Junior Secondary School (JSS2) student at St. Louis Secondary School in Kano on Saturday, has prompted a police investigation after her family alleged conflicting accounts of the incident.

The committee is expected to submit its findings and recommendations to the state government within the stipulated timeframe.

The Nigerian government has reportedly ordered the vice chancellor of Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Professor Ikechukwu Dozie, to immediately withdraw his appointment of twenty-four aides.

This contained a leaked directive dated June 25th, 2026, allegedly signed by Kareem O. L., acting director of university education on behalf of the minister of education.

The government in the purported directive cited alleged breaches of due process as the reason for the directive.

Recall that Prof. Dozie assumed office on June 19th, 2026, as the 9th VC of FUTO Owerri.

Thereafter, a report emerged that the VC appointed 24 aides.

Reacting to the alleged leaked correspondence, the ministry faulted the appointments and directed the vice-chancellor to reverse them “forthwith” and provide evidence of compliance without delay.

The government reportedly described the appointments as irregular and inconsistent with regulations governing Nigeria’s federal universities.

“At variance with the extant regulations, established procedures, and the principles of due process governing appointments within the Federal University System.”

Beyond the order to cancel the appointments, the leaked letter also summoned the vice-chancellor to Abuja for an urgent meeting with officials of the Ministry on June 29.

A copy of the communication was also forwarded to the National Universities Commission (NUC), a move experts say underscores the seriousness of the matter and the potential implications for university governance.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the management of FUTO nor officials of the Federal Ministry of Education had publicly commented on the leaked directive.
