The actor addressed the issue during an interview with Broadway TV, where he discussed what he believes could be one of the reasons some industry executives are reluctant to support upcoming talents from the Igbo community.

According to Michael, the hesitation is sometimes driven by fear that a person who receives mentorship could eventually become more successful than the individual who trained them.

He argued that Igbo people are often quick to learn new skills and can use limited resources to establish themselves, which he believes makes some executives cautious about investing in their development.

‘They Are Scared Of Creating Competition’

Michael explained that some executives may worry that mentoring a talented individual could eventually create a rival within the same industry.

He said an aspiring creative could learn in a relatively short period what took an established professional many years to master.

“Igbo people are fast learners and they are capable of making it big with just a little. You might decide to mentor an Igbo person and what took you 10 years to learn, he will learn it in one year and six months,” he said.

The actor suggested that the situation could become problematic when the mentee eventually leaves to establish an independent career.

“And if you don’t treat him well, he will leave you and start doing the same business you taught him and become your competition. So, people are scared of that,” he added.

Michael’s comments point to the competitive nature of the entertainment industry, where established professionals may have concerns about developing individuals who could eventually compete for similar opportunities, audiences and business relationships.

Says Concern Exists Among Igbos

The actor also stressed that he did not believe the alleged reluctance was exclusively associated with executives from other ethnic groups.

Here's a breakdown of what businesses need to understand about the upcoming changes.

First, not all WhatsApp Business users will be charged. A common misunderstanding is that this update applies universally, but WhatsApp actually operates two separate business products.

The free WhatsApp Business app caters to smaller operations, letting owners set up profiles, showcase products, and manage customer interactions directly.

The Business Platform, previously known as the WhatsApp Business API, serves larger organisations that require automated systems and CRM integrations to manage higher volumes of customer engagement. It's this platform that will be subject to the new fees.

Second, pricing will depend on message type. WhatsApp's model charges businesses according to three categories: marketing messages, which cover promotions and advertising campaigns; utility messages, tied to transactional updates like order and payment confirmations; and authentication messages, which include OTPs and login verification. Costs will vary depending on both the category and the recipient's country.

Third, customer-initiated chats are treated differently. If a customer reaches out to a business first, replies within the designated service window won't attract the same charges.

However, if a company initiates contact with a customer who hasn't recently engaged with them, that message could incur a fee based on its category, pushing businesses to be more deliberate about outreach timing.

Fourth, larger companies stand to feel the impact most. Sectors such as banking, fintech, e-commerce, and telecoms, all of which depend heavily on automated WhatsApp messaging, are expected to see the most significant cost increases given their message volumes.

Finally, businesses may need to rethink their WhatsApp strategy altogether, focusing on more targeted outreach, proper customer opt-ins, and reduced marketing spam to manage costs effectively.

For Nigerian businesses, the immediate priority is identifying whether they use the free app or the paid platform, and if the latter applies, reviewing Meta's updated pricing framework to adjust their communication approach accordingly.

Two Killed In Machete Attack At Filmhouse Cinemas IMAX, Lekki

Two people lost their lives in a violent attack that unfolded at the car park of Filmhouse Cinemas IMAX in Lekki, Lagos, in the early hours of Saturday.

Filmhouse Group addressed the incident in a statement released later that day, clarifying that the attack took place outside the cinema's premises and had no connection to its day-to-day business.

Confirming the fatalities, the Lagos State Police Command corroborated the death toll, a development first reported by Vanguard.

Police spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi explained that a man wielding a cutlass launched an assault on security staff stationed at the facility.

One officer was killed in the attack, while another sustained injuries. Adebisi further disclosed that the attacker, believed to be homeless, was later set upon by a mob and did not survive the encounter.

"Two people have been confirmed dead," she stated, though she noted that investigators had yet to establish the full identities of those involved or piece together exactly how the events unfolded.

According to the police spokesperson, efforts are underway to retrieve and analyse CCTV recordings from the scene, a step authorities hope will clarify the circumstances surrounding the attack and reveal whether additional individuals played any part in it.

In its response, Filmhouse Group affirmed that it was fully cooperating with law enforcement and had since ramped up security measures across all its branches nationwide.

A business venture that was meant to improve his financial situation has reportedly ended in tragedy for a 40-year-old Delta State businessman identified as Ogbeni Goggo.

Goggo reportedly borrowed ₦1.8 million to finance the business, but the venture did not produce the outcome he had expected. As the financial pressure mounted, those close to him became concerned about his state of mind.

According to reports, Goggo sent messages to some friends and family members on Wednesday, August 26. In the messages, he reportedly said he was tired of life and wanted to end it.

That was the last time some of his loved ones heard from him.

When Goggo did not come home later that day, his wife became worried. She reached out to members of the family, and attempts were made to contact him by phone. Despite their efforts, they could not establish where he was.

The family continued searching for him on Thursday, hoping that he would eventually return or make contact.

By Friday morning, however, the situation had become serious enough for his wife to visit the Ebrumede Police Station in Uvwie Local Government Area and report him missing.

At the police station, officers reportedly showed her a photograph of an unidentified deceased man who had been found around the Ebrumede Flyover/DSC Roundabout area.

She reportedly recognised the man in the photograph as her husband.

Details surrounding his final moments later emerged. Reports said some people saw Goggo after he allegedly ingested Sniper and immediately raised an alarm, apparently hoping that he could still be helped.

He had reportedly collapsed and was jerking by the time people tried to assist him. The police were subsequently contacted.

His remains were later evacuated to a morgue in Agbaro.

Goggo had been married for three years, and the couple reportedly had no child. His sudden de.ath has left his wife and other members of his family dealing with the loss.

For those who knew him, the tragedy reportedly came after a difficult period involving the failed business and the ₦1.8 million loan attached to it. What began as an attempt to build a source of income ultimately became a burden he was unable to cope with.

The circumstances surrounding his de.ath have also drawn attention to the personal toll that financial difficulties and failed business ventures can have on people. While money problems can feel overwhelming, situations involving thoughts of suicide require immediate support from trusted people and emergency or professional help.

Jaiyeola Kuti has opened up about a favour Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, did for her years ago, saying she only fully understood the value of his intervention after it began to benefit her career.

The actress shared the story while remembering the late Yoruba actor, describing him as someone who genuinely wanted the people around him to succeed.

Kuti said the incident happened when she, Ogogo and actor Yinka Quadri were together at a movie location. At the time, Ogogo and Quadri were discussing a possible trip to Canada with someone Kuti referred to as Starboy.

According to her, Ogogo noticed that she was not showing any interest in the conversation and asked why she had no plans to travel to Canada. Kuti said she initially brushed off the idea because she did not have any particular interest in going.

Ogogo, however, did not leave it at that.

She recalled that the actor encouraged her to reconsider and went a step further by contacting Starboy in Canada to help arrange an invitation letter for her.

Kuti said the process moved surprisingly quickly. Within 10 days of submitting her application, she said it had been approved, with a 10-year visa eventually stamped on her passport.

Looking back, the actress admitted that she did not immediately appreciate what Ogogo had done for her. It was only after she began travelling to Canada with her movies and earning money there that she realised just how significant his encouragement had been.

“Truly Alhaji Taiwo Hassan Ogogo was a Prophet, l could remember that year we all met at Location, Actor Yinka Quadri was with us and they were busy discussing about Visiting Canada with Starboy. Ogogo looked at me and asked me why l wasn't interested in Visiting Canada, l reluctantly replied him that l don't have intrest jare

He had to convince me and even spoke with starboy in Canada to send me invite letter. Within 10days l submitted my application, it was approved and l was given and 10yrs was stamped on my passport.

I never appreciated it then not until l started taking my movies to Canada and making money. I am planning going next week again. thank God l listened to Ogogo the other day.”

For Kuti, the memory has taken on a different meaning following Ogogo’s death. She said she has continued to remember his smiling face and believes it reflects the kind of person he was while alive.

She described him as a warm and supportive person who was always willing to lend a hand when he believed someone could benefit from it.

“Ever since Ogogo kpai, l have been seeing his smiling faces, it shows his in a pleasant place because when he was alive he was such a pleasant soul to be with.

His always ready to support and just want everyone around him to succeed.”

Kuti also used the opportunity to encourage people to show more kindness to one another, stressing that life is ultimately temporary.

“May the soul of Sir T find rest and let's be kind to eachother too because at the end of the day everyone will kpai.”

For the actress, Ogogo’s legacy is therefore not only about the movies he made or the years he spent in the Yoruba entertainment industry. It is also about the personal support he offered to people around him, sometimes in ways whose importance only became clear much later.

One follower, identified as Mrs Lawal, reportedly narrated an experience involving bananas purchased in Lagos. She claimed that her palms became red and swollen after handling the fruit and that the banana subsequently turned black the following day.

Another follower, Miss Quinty Forever, reportedly said beans she purchased developed a kerosene-like smell after they were soaked. According to her account, her husband suspected that chemicals had been used on the beans.

Adekoya used the experiences to encourage Nigerians to pay closer attention to the quality of food they purchase and consume. She also criticised the practice of knowingly buying counterfeit or substandard products simply because they are cheaper.

According to the actress, the demand for cheaper products can encourage sellers and manufacturers who prioritise profit over safety.

“We don’t realise that we are killing ourselves. We are all the same. Everybody is greedy. Everybody is corrupt. Everybody wants fast money. So we don’t care about human lives,” she said.

Adekoya’s message also touched on the emotional burden faced by people living with serious illnesses. During the discussion, she responded to a cancer patient identified as Akande Alarape Abbas, who revealed in the comment section that he undergoes chemotherapy every three weeks.

The actress offered prayers for Abbas and others undergoing treatment, asking for strength and healing before ending her video with a rendition of the Christian hymn “It Is Well.”

"When I was starting out, I mean, I got a lot of noes. One thing is, it wasn't based off of a deficit of talent. It was just that I probably did not fit into the character," she recalled.

Veteran actor Francis Duru has weighed in on why Yoruba filmmakers now control much of Nollywood despite Igbo pioneers laying the industry's foundation.

Duru acknowledged that while Yoruba figures like Hubert Ogunde were early pioneers of Nigerian cinema dating back to the 1950s, it was Igbo entrepreneurs who truly launched what became known as Nollywood, introducing home videos into the Nigerian market during the 1990s and early 2000s.

According to him, the shift in dominance came down to organization and communal support, qualities he believes the Yoruba film community demonstrated far better than their Igbo counterparts.

"The Yorubas epitomise the saying, 'Charity begins at home.' We need to learn from them. If you don't protect and project your own, who will do it?" he said.

The actor didn't hold back in critiquing his own ethnic group, arguing that Igbo filmmakers have largely abandoned their cultural narratives on major platforms.

"We created Nollywood, but if you go to Netflix today, you hardly see one movie that speaks of Igbo heritage. But the Yorubas, on the other hand, created opportunities for themselves and utilised them," Duru stated.

He attributed this decline to what he described as a self-centered mindset among Igbo people in the industry, contrasting it with the collective approach he says defined Yoruba success.

"Igbos failed to learn because of their individualistic mentality. You think you are the big man, so you are self-centred. But you forget that a time will come when you need to be expansive," he added.

Duru insisted that many of Nollywood's earliest backers were simply traders who recognized a business opportunity, and once they did, they mobilized their communities to invest.

"You need to be proactive and ask yourself, 'There is a new market space; why am I not there?' Most of the persons who pioneered Nollywood were mere traders. So, you created something, and some people saw the gold in it, got together, called their people who have the 'do,' and they invested in it. The Yorubas protected their own," he explained.

Rather than resent Yoruba success, Duru urged Igbos to reflect on their own shortcomings.

"Don't get angry with them. These are people who saw their own and protected their own. What happened to you? Igbos have many great men in Nigeria," he said.

He further lamented the absence of cinematic tributes to prominent Igbo figures, pointing out that talented Igbo writers now lend their skills to Yoruba productions instead.

"When was the last time you saw the epic of one of these great men? We have great writers who are now writing for the Yorubas. You even see the Yorubas crossing over to write Igbo stories like 'Ahamefuna' and making a mess of who we are," Duru concluded.

I have built my name, my brand, and my businesses over many years through hard work, discipline, and dedication. Therefore, anyone who chooses to associate my name, my family, or my businesses with false allegations must be prepared to be held accountable according to the law.
