Data on our climate and natural resources – such as forests and ocean – can be captured and analyzed. Accurately analyzing and utilizing that data will play an important role in designing and building resilient infrastructure, networks and systems.

Solutions could range from ensuring reliable power generation and effective emergency responses in the midst of a fierce storm, to advancing sustainable agriculture and protecting biodiversity. It could include improving access to clean and safe drinking water – and much, much more.

Solutions submitted in this challenge do not need to be commercialized and will be treated by our review team as confidential.

Why is this challenge important?

The world as we know it is rapidly changing and Lagos, projected to become the world’s largest megacity by 2100, already faces significant challenges despite its position as a regional economic hub. These challenges present significant opportunities for entrepreneurs who leverage innovative approaches to build solutions that solve critical issues that impact residents within the city.

NNPC National Quiz Competition 2017

The NNPC (Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation) quiz competition was inaugurated in 2000 and limited to the Niger Delta level, but went national in 2001 Till date, it has run 15 national editions. The 2017 edition is, therefore, the 16 (excluding a year it was not held).

Title: NNPC National Quiz Competition 2017

Background
The NNPC quiz competition is designed mainly for students in the nations secondary schools, the competition has impacted positively on the intellectual attainment of young Nigerians. It has provided financial succour to successful contestants who have been placed on bursary throughout their university education. Many of the awardees had moved on to achieve academic laurels in tertiary institutions, locally and internationally.

Fulfilling aspects of its slant, records show many of the past awardees ended up studying Science and Technology related courses in the university. In 2010, a past winner of the competition emerged second in a contest involving others from the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) Member Countries, and Austria to commemorate the 50 Anniversary of OPEC.

Several years after its inauguration, the horizon of the competition soars.

To implement a core element of NNPC Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) package.
To promote Science education in the country.
To encourage students in the study of Science and Technology related subjects,

The winning paper will be published as a background paper for a high level conference on “Health Policy and Systems Research: 20 years on” that will take place in Stockholm Sweden, in April 2017.

About the Award: Much has changed in the 20 years since the WHO Ad-Hoc Committee on Health Research highlighted the need to strengthen Health Policy and Systems Research which was followed by an international consultation in Lejondal, Sweden in 1997 that led to the establishment of the Alliance for Health Policy and Systems Research (AHPSR).

Today as the world transitions from the MDGs to the SDGs, and in light of recent crises resulting from outbreaks, disasters, and conflicts, the need for health policy and systems research in ensuring resilient health systems and improving health is increasingly recognized. How the field can continue to evolve to respond to these and other needs, as well as the role that international entities can play in shaping this evolution, is the topic to be addressed by this essay.

In no more than 5000 words, essays – written in English, should:

reflect on the role and contributions of Health Policy and Systems Research in strengthening health systems and future challenges in the context of Agenda 2030;

identify strategies and innovative approaches to ensure the greater use of health policy and systems research by relevant actors and stakeholders; and

explore opportunities to further strengthen the position and role of the Alliance for Health Policy & Systems Research in advancing the field.

Type: Essay contest

Eligibility: Teams of 3-5 persons from different disciplinary backgrounds are encouraged to contribute to this essay.

In order to be eligible, teams must be made up of:

At least two different disciplinary backgrounds

A mix of genders

The lead author must not be more than 35 years of age at the date of submission and must be a national (citizen) of a low- or middle-income country.

Teams led by women are strongly encouraged to apply

Selection Criteria: Submissions will be reviewed by a panel comprising independent researchers, decision-makers, as well as members of the Alliance HPSR Board, Scientific & Technical Advisory Committee (STAC) and Secretariat. Essays will be judged based on:

Quality and coherence of argument made

Novelty of approach proposed

Clarity in depicting the role of health policy and systems research

Evidence used to support proposals, positions, and perspectives presented in paper

About the Award: The Tana Forum 2017 theme, “Natural Resource Governance in Africa” is intended to stimulate a debate on the reasons why Africa’s security challenges are attracting substantial global attention whereas the continent’s own experience and articulation of its issues has yet to obtain commensurate global recognition, acceptance and significance. It is evident today – more than any time in the past – that Africa needs to rally a unified and amplified voice and agency if it is to assert its own interests in international security debates and agendas. The 2017 Tana Forum Essay Competition forms part of this consultative debate that is envisioned to contribute to policy building and development.

Africa is the arena for some of modern world’s intractable security challenges. Eighty years ago, when powerful nations breached multilateral decision-making and international law, Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia stood before the League of Nations and declared the imminent catastrophe facing the world, should the principles of common security be abandoned. Since then, Africa has not only been the testing ground of international peace and security, but its governments and institutions have been the champion and custodian of common security.

Eligibility:

Applicants must be an African residing in an African country;
Applicants must be Master’s or PhD students from the Social Science/Humanities/Political Science/ International Relations field in one of the under-listed universities

Selection Criteria:

Entries must be typed, double-spaced, in 12-point Times New Roman or an equivalent font with a one-inch margin on all sides of the page;
Essays must be between 5-10 pages in length;
Submissions must be the original work of applicants with a comprehensive list of sources consulted. Essays on other topics will not be accepted. Please use the topic as the title of your essay;
Submissions should be either in English or French;
A bibliography must be included. AT LEAST three of the sources you cite must be primary sources, i.e. books, periodicals or newspapers that you have researched. (A primary source is a document, speech, or other sort of evidence written, created or otherwise produced during the time under study. Primary sources offer an inside view of a particular event. They may be accessed online.) Other sources may be online, provided they are cited correctly as such. Any submissions lacking three primary sources will be disqualified.
Any essay using crowd-sourced and publicly editable sources such as Wikipedia will be disqualified! Please make sure to also separate your primary source list from your Internet source list.
Essays MUST be submitted in Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) format and any essay. submitted in any other format will not be considered.
Your essay will be disqualified if it does not meet the requirements or is submitted after the submission date of 11:59 pm EST on Tuesday 31 January, 2017.

JAMB Totally Cancels Use of Scratch Cards

– JAMB has cancelled the use of scratch cards for any transaction
– The board described the use of cards as archaic and old-fashioned
– The decision is also as a result of fraudulent practices associated with scratch cards

Professor Ishaq Oloyede, the registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has revealed that they have scrapped the use of scratch cards for any transactions and services.

The reason given for the scrapping was that it was archaic and subject to fraud.

On another note, the registrar, also demanded that the federal government should revert to the former system where serving vice chancellors of universities were made chairmen of the governing board of JAMB.

Dr Fabian Benjamin the spokesperson for JAMB, said, the decision to scrap the use of scratch cards was announced by the registrar in Abuja in a paper he delivered during a meeting of the association of vice chancellors of Nigerian universities.

In lieu of the scratch cards, the platform of pin vending will be used, in order to check all forms of fraudulent practices which was prevalent with the use of scratch cards.
“The decision is as a result of its consistent subjection to fraudulent practices, the use of scratch cards is archaic and it is the drive by JAMB to also promote accountability in line with government’s zero tolerance for corruption.

“This new system will be accessible through the options of web payment, ATM issued cards (Visa, verve and Mastercard), online quick teller, ATM payment, quick teller mobile application and Bank Branch case/card,” he said.

Speaking about the practice of using university vice chancellors as the chairmen of the governing board of JAMB, Oloyede appealed to the government that since the agency is a creation of the committee of vice chancellors, it would only be proper for them to be clearly recognised as active stakeholders to avoid any acrimony between tertiary institutions and JAMB.

He said he believed that this would “engender good synergies and harmonious relationship with a view to effectively delivering on its mandates.”

He concluded saying: “This practice which promoted harmony and quality inputs on the Board’s matriculation activities have since been forgotten or neglected.

“The appointment of the chairman of the Board could be restricted to only heads of tertiary institutions in Nigeria perhaps in rotational basis among the vice chancellors of universities, rectors of polytechnics, monotechnics and provosts of colleges of education.”

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Senate on Thursday, October 13, extended the validity period of the JAMB Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) to three years against the present one year.

About the Award: The Trust for Sustainable Living is pleased to invite schoolchildren around the world to write open letters to the soon-to-be-elected new UN Secretary General, outlining their ideas for practical climate action. The annual essay competition and debate are aimed at primary students (ages 7-11) and secondary students (ages 11-17), supported by Teacher Champions in formal and home schools.

Eligibility: Students are invited to write an essay outlining their thoughts on climate action, in English, as follows:

Primary students (ages 7-11): ‘My Plan for Climate Action’ (max. 400 words)

Theme: The theme for 2017 Queen’s Commonwealth essay competition is ‘A Commonwealth for Peace’. We are asking young writers to explore peace at every level, from the personal to the political to the pan-Commonwealth.

For some, movement is an overwhelming ordeal. Not all of us choose to move. Some are forced from their homes against their will. There are more refugees now than at any point in human history. According to the United Nations refugee agency there are more than 65 million people who have had to leave their homes – either as refugees, asylum seekers, or to be displaced in their own countries.

Immigration, whether for a career change or to flee a conflict, is an enormous challenge for both the immigrant and the host country. Both are faced with questions of assimilation, integration, xenophobia, employment, security, education, etc. There are no simple answers to these questions, and both immigrant and host have legitimate concerns.

Selection Criteria: The winners will be determined by the Fountain essay contest board who will decide according to the literary effectiveness of the essay in reflecting the philosophy behind the motto, richness in content, and authenticity.

Innovation & creativity (30 points)
Writing style and structure (30 points)

Essay question:

In the next 40 years, it is projected that the world population will grow from 7 to almost 10 billion. However, 1 billion people today still do not have enough safe and nutritious food to eat. Demand is rising while resources are dwindling. Solutions are strongly debated across rural, urban and international communities.

In September 2015, the world’s leaders came together to agree on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all.

In the context of “Feeding a hungry planet” and using your own village, town, city or country as your point of reference, tell us on which SDGs youth can have the most impact in the next one to five years, both at a local and global level.

You should explain how working on these SDGs youth can bring real change to agricultural or food chain practices, or personal and community behaviors, that could help feed 10 billion and create a more sustainable local and global society.

About the Award: From October 9-13, 2017, young leaders from around the world will gather at the Youth Ag-Summit to discuss ideas, develop a vision and deliver action. If you’re 18-25 and care about our planet’s future, you should be part of this. Send us your thoughts and we might send you to Brussels, Belgium to share them with 100 other bright young minds and leaders.

By 2050, there will be almost 10 billion hungry people in the world and less farmland and resources than there’s ever been. The solutions are keenly debated both in rural and urban society. We believe there is a need for young leaders to be engaged in finding sustainable agricultural solutions to the growing global need for safe, nutritious food.

About the Award: Join the debate with 600 top global leaders and decision makers. Become a member of a truly unique and strong global community by sharing your thoughts, ideas and visions with the global elite. The St. Gallen Symposium presents small and intimate gatherings with world leaders, exclusively for the Leaders of Tomorrow. Young leaders from around the world get the chance to meet 200 of the world’s brightest young minds and participate in an exciting essay competition with broad media coverage. CHF 20,000 prize money will be shared by the three winners and expenses for travel, board and lodging covered, travel service to be provided for finalists.

Eligibility: To be eligible, candidate must fulfil all of the following criteria:

Enrolled in a graduate or postgraduate program (master level or higher) in any field of study at a regular university
Born in 1987 or later

Selection Criteria: All contributions will be evaluated according to specific criteria by an independent jury composed of professors, corporate executives and entrepreneurs. The authors of the best 100 contributions qualify as Leaders of Tomorrow and will be invited by the ISC to the next St. Gallen Symposium.

Selection Process:

If the jury selects your essay in the top 100, you qualify as a Leader of Tomorrow for an allexpenses-covered participation in the 47th St. Gallen Symposium (3–5 May 2017). The results will be announced via e-mail by mid-March 2017.
You qualify as a semi-finalist to compete for the prestigious St. Gallen Wings of Excellence Award 2017 if the jury selects your essay for the top 20. You will be asked mid-March to pitch the essence of your essay in a 3-minute video presentation.
The jury selects you as a finalist if your essay and your video presentation makes it in the top six. You will be invited to present and defend your idea on the big stage of the 47th St. Gallen Symposium.
The jury selects the three award winners based on both the quality of the essay and the performance on stage.

Value of Award: Expenses for travel, board and lodging covered, travel service provided. The award is endowed with a total prize money of CHF 20,000

Commonwealth Class Story Writing Competition 2016 for School Teachers and Students

All sorts of images might pop into your head – maybe of your family, friends, country, or perhaps even of your favourite sports team! It might not be an image at all, but a particular emotion, memory or sensation.

Capture what ‘Belonging’ means to you by putting pen to paper or fingertips to keyboard and submitting your story to our Commonwealth Class story writing competition.

Application Deadline: Monday 14th November 2016.

About the Award: The competition is open to teachers and students aged 7 to 14 from Commonwealth countries and is a wonderful opportunity for you to add your voice to the Commonwealth’s rich storytelling heritage through writing and illustration (and, of course, be in with the chance of winning some fantastic prizes!)

Information for Students:

Students will be split into two different age categories: 7 to 10 year olds and 11 to 14 year olds.

Students should write a story set in their own country and based around the theme of ‘Belonging’
The story must be written in English
The story should be illustrated. Take a look at the beautiful covers of the Commonwealth Education Trust’s River of Stories anthology (See Link below) as inspiration. Participants are free to choose the medium of their illustrations (for example, they can be hand-drawn, using a computer/tablet etc.)
The word limit of the story for the 7-10 year olds category is 300 words
The word limit of the story for the 11-14 year olds category is 500 words.

Information for Teachers:

Teachers should submit a fictional story for children on the theme of ‘Belonging’
The word limit for the story is 1500 words
The story must be written in English and set in the teacher’s home country.

Eligibility: The competition is open to teachers and students attending/working at a school recognised by the government of a Commonwealth country.

Selection Process: Entries will be shortlisted and judged by a panel of judges selected by British Council in the UK.

Value of Contest: The following prizes will be given to students awarded first, second and third place in the competition:

First prize: a River of Stories anthology published by the Commonwealth Education Trust for the school AND a £100 book token or equivalent for the student
Second prize: £50 book token or equivalent for the student
Third prize: £30 book token or equivalent for the student.

For the Teacher: The winner will receive the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of taking part in a writing master class delivered by Anne Fine herself and a River of Stories anthology published by the Commonwealth Education Trust for the School.
