Omotola makes Time’s world most influential list

Nollywood actress, Omotola Jolade-Ekeinde, has been named amongst the 100 most influential people in the world. Explaining how Omotola made the list, TIME’s movie critic, Richard Corliss, on the TIME’s website, described her as the Queen of Nollywood. Called OmoSexy by her fans, she has made 300 or so features, from the 1996 Mortal Inheritance to the 2010 super production Ijé, shot partly on location in Los Angeles. She brings a juggler’s grace to her roles as actress, singer, reality-show star. Success hasn’t spoilt Africa’s most renowned leading lady. Rather than going Hollywood, Omotola wants to stay Nollywood, he notes.

Before the election, I knocked at 6,000 doors to present our party manifesto and campaign my candidature. This went on every day till I was able to achieve meeting everyone one on one. My campaign cut across all races and tribes living in my ward. I was able to convince them that I was competent for the job and that they could count on me. Some slammed the door at me when they saw I’m black while others threatened to pour water on me. I won my first election in 2002 and had a repeat of this victory in 2006 and 2010. Towards the end of my tenure as a Councillor in 2010, I gave the post of mayor a trial. The biggest hurdle was winning 37 colleagues to my side for endorsement. At the end of the day, I had more than the required number for the endorsement. I eventually won the seat of deputy mayor. This was to nurture and put me under observation to see how I would perform if I later became the mayor. This was quite necessary because the mayor is the first citizen of a borough. Enfield is the fourth largest borough out of the 32 boroughs in London.

Diabetes

Diabetes is a growing problem in this country. With our
population at an all time high in weight gain and a low in
health care, the problem is only growing.

Diabetes is a disease of the metabolism. Our metabolism is
what the way our bodies use digested food for energy and
growth.

Most food that is processed through our bodies is broken
down by digestive juices into a sugar called glucose.
Glucose is the fuel our bodies run on.

When we eat, and our food is processed, the pancreas is
supposed to produce the right amount of glucose from our
blood automatically and release the right amount of insulin
into our blood.

In people with diabetes, little to no insulin is produced
or the body’s cells don’t respond correctly to the insulin
that is produced. Therefore the glucose builds up and
overflows into the urine and passes out of the body.

This is how the body loses its main source of fuel even
though the bloodstream contains good amounts of the natural
glucose.

There are three types of diabetes, type 1, type 2 and
gestational diabetes. People who have type 1 are known as
insulin-dependent.

This is an autoimmune disease where the body’s natural
system is fighting against another part of the body. In the
case of type 1 diabetes, the system attacks the insulin
producing cells and destroys them.

Therefore the pancreas can produce little to no insulin.
These people are in need of daily injections of insulin to
live.
