United States President Donald Trump has ordered Nigerians and other nationals applying for green cards to return to their home countries and apply for the process except in extraordinary circumstances.

The president disclosed this new immigration directives on Friday.

A statement by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services, said the policy was aimed at restoring what it described as the original intent of US immigration law.

According to the statement, foreigners aliens seeking adjustment of status would now be required to process their residency applications through US consular offices abroad under the supervision of the United States Department of State.

“We’re returning to the original intent of the law to ensure aliens navigate our nation’s immigration system properly.

“From now on, an alien who is in the US temporarily and wants a Green Card must return to their home country to apply, except in extraordinary circumstances,” the statement said.

ADC decries restricted access to el-Rufai in detention, alleges heavy police deployment at ICPC facility

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has decried restricted access to Nasir el-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna, at the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) detention facility in Abuja.

El-Rufai has been in the custody of the ICPC since February 19 over alleged financial impropriety during his tenure as governor of Kaduna between 2015 and 2023.

On March 28, the former governor was granted temporary leave to attend his mother’s funeral.

In 2024, the Kaduna state house of assembly indicted el-Rufai over the alleged diversion of N423 billion in public funds and money laundering and demanded that he be investigated by anti-graft agencies.

On April 13, 2026, the ICPC arraigned el-Rufai at the Kaduna high court on an amended nine-count charge bordering on alleged fraud and abuse of office.

On May 16, Mohammed Bello, el-Rufai’s son, alleged that ICPC operatives denied his father access to medical and family care at its detention facility.

However, Okor Odey, ICPC spokesperson, described the claim as “false and misleading”.

‘ADC’S DELEGATION DENIED ACCESS TO EL-RUFAI WITHOUT REASONABLE EXPLANATION’

In a statement, Bolaji Abdullahi, national publicity secretary of the ADC, said a delegation of the party led by Rauf Aregbesola, national secretary, and Salihu Lukman, secretary of the policy and manifesto committee, was also prevented from seeing el-Rufai on Friday.

“Despite prior communication and formal requests, we were denied access without any reasonable explanation,” the statement reads.

“While we were at the premises awaiting a response to our request, the atmosphere suddenly became noticeably tense after no fewer than three truckloads of armed police officers arrived at the facility.”

Abdullahi noted that the “heavy deployment of policemen”, created the false impression that opposition leaders’ presence at the commission could trigger public outrage.

He expressed deep concerns that “a simple request by senior party officials to visit a detained colleague was met, not with professionalism, but with a show of force more suited to the suppression of civil unrest.”

“At no point did members of our delegation threaten disorder, incite confrontation, or mobilise supporters to the premises,” Abdullahi said.

“Yet the response of the state suggested panic, fear, and an attempt to intimidate not only our party leaders, but also any Nigerian who may dare to question the treatment being meted out to opposition figures.”

He added that “such actions only reinforce growing public concern that state institutions are increasingly being used, not merely for law enforcement, but as instruments of political pressure and psychological intimidation against dissenting voices”.

Abdullahi said the ADC had previously written officially to Musa Aliyu, ICPC chairman, requesting visitation rights to el-Rufai, in light of growing public concerns regarding his wellbeing and reports of repeated restrictions on access to family members and medical personnel.

“Let it be clear: Mallam Nasir El-Rufai is not a fugitive. He voluntarily submitted himself to the authorities,” the ADC publicity secretary said.

“Under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, he is entitled to dignity, medical care, family access, and fair treatment under the law.

“What we are witnessing increasingly appears to be punishment by process, intimidation through isolation, and an attempt to break the spirit of a leading opposition figure.”

He said the party would not stand by and watch one of its leaders subjected to “this pattern of harassment and calculated humiliation”.

“The international community is watching. The world is watching,” he said.

“We therefore demand that the ICPC immediately grant unrestricted access to Mallam El-Rufai by his family, doctors, lawyers, and leaders of his political party.”

He added that anything short of granting the request would only reinforce public perception that state institutions are being weaponised against opposition voices.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan says the “no victor, no vanquished” declaration by Yakubu Gowon after the Nigerian civil war laid the foundation for healing across the country.

Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday at the public presentation of Gowon’s autobiography, “My Life of Duty and Allegiance”, Jonathan praised the former military leader for his contributions to national unity, reconciliation and youth development.

He described Gowon as a “living testimony” of leadership during one of Nigeria’s most defining periods.

According to the former president, Gowon’s autobiography provides deep insight into the challenges of nationhood, peace building, reconciliation and statesmanship, especially during and after the Nigerian civil war between 1967 and 1970.

“Today’s event is not merely the unveiling of a book. It is the presentation of a living testimony,” Jonathan said.

“It reflects a leader who stood at the centre of some of the defining moments in our national journey.”

He also commended Gowon for introducing policies that transformed the country, particularly the establishment of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Jonathan noted that the NYSC scheme was created to foster unity among young Nigerians and bridge ethnic divisions across the country.

Recalling his personal experience, Jonathan said NYSC teachers posted to his secondary school in 1973 contributed significantly to his education at a time graduate teachers were scarce in many rural schools.

“The vision of the NYSC was great and it will continue to remain great. The youth corps scheme was meant to unite our nation and help us live as one Nigeria,” he said.

Jonathan also praised Alex Ekwueme for working alongside Gowon on reforms that shaped the nation.

He noted the importance of preserving historical records through memoirs, saying younger generations must hear directly from leaders who witnessed critical moments in Nigeria’s history.

He said Gowon has continued to distinguish himself through peace-building efforts and advocacy for national unity long after leaving office.

Jonathan added that initiatives championed by the former military ruler demonstrates that true leadership extended beyond political power into service to humanity.

He described the autobiography as timely, especially at a period when many nations across the world are grappling with insecurity, division and political polarisation.

Jonathan urged contemporary leaders and younger Nigerians to learn from the values of courage, vision, reconciliation and patriotism highlighted in the book.

He further commended Gowon for documenting his experiences for future generations and preserving an important part of Nigeria’s historical record.

Lanre Adesuyi, group chief executive of Havilah Group, publisher of the book, said Gowon has chosen to tell his story openly and truthfully, without bitterness or judgement.

Adesuyi stressed the importance of telling one’s own truth as in the case of Gowon in the book.

“While working on this book, one principle stood out clearly: the importance of telling one’s own truth. And as we all know, truth remains a defence,” Adesuyi said.

“Too often, history is left in the hands of outsiders or shaped by incomplete recollections.

“There is an African proverb which says that until the lion learns to write, every story will glorify the hunter.

“ For too long, many of our national stories have been told from only one perspective. That is why we must tell our own stories and preserve our own memories.

Residents torch Ebola isolation tents after hospital blocks removal of victim’s body

Residents have set part of a hospital isolation tent ablaze amid rising tensions over the Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

According to the BBC, the incident occurred after relatives and supporters of a young man believed to have died from Ebola attempted to take his body from Rwampara General Hospital near Bunia in Ituri province — the epicentre of the outbreak where most cases have been recorded — for burial but were denied access.

Police reportedly fired warning shots to disperse the crowd as violence escalated.

Health authorities insist on controlled burials for Ebola victims because bodies remain highly infectious and can contribute to further transmission.

Following the incident, medical workers at the hospital were placed under military protection while security operatives moved to restore order.

Jean Claude Mukendi, coordinator of the Ebola security response in Ituri, said the deceased was a well-known figure in the community and many residents struggling to accept his death failed to understand the severity of the disease.

The victim was said to be a footballer who had played for several local teams. His mother reportedly insisted that he died of typhoid fever and not Ebola.

Luc Malembe Malembe, a local politician, blamed misinformation and poor awareness for the violence.

“People are not properly informed or sensitised about what is happening. For a certain segment of the population, especially in remote areas, Ebola is an invention by outsiders — it does not exist,” BBC quoted him as saying.

“They believe NGOs and hospitals created this to make money, and this is tragic.”

He added that two isolation tents were destroyed in the fire, including a body that had been awaiting burial.

Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner, DR Congo’s foreign minister, described the incident as a “very frightening situation” for affected communities.

She said authorities were intensifying response efforts in outbreak areas to ensure residents feel “safe, understood and heard”.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends “safe and dignified burials” for Ebola victims, with specially trained teams handling bodies using protective equipment.

On Friday, WHO upgraded the risk of Ebola outbreak in DRC as very high.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO director-general, said there has been abiut 750 suspected cases in the DR Congo and 177 suspected deaths.

“We are now revising our risk assessment to very high at the national level, high at the regional level, and low at the global level, the WHO chief said.

The National Working Committee, NWC of Professor Abubakar Sadiq Gombe led Social Democratic Party, SDP has declared victory following Friday’s Supreme Court judgment, insisting the ruling has stripped all legal backing from attempts to challenge the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and disciplinary decisions.

Speaking with Journalists on Friday, Gombe streseed that the apex court had effectively reaffirmed the authority of the SDP leadership under his faction while dismissing contrary interpretations circulating online.

Flanked by the National Secretary, Olu Agunloye, Senator Ugochukwu Uba, others, the SDP chairman explained that the judgment demolished earlier Court of Appeal pronouncements touching on the party’s internal affairs and leadership structure, particularly issues linked to Shehu Musa Gabam.

Gombe said, “We represented the party physically at the Supreme Court. We have already applied for the Certified True Copy of the judgment. Journalists can independently verify what transpired.”

Warning rival forces within the party, he insisted no individual could override the authority of party institutions, Gombe said, “We are talking about an institution, not individuals. One person cannot override the structure of the party.”

The Gombe camp also intensified pressure on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC demanding immediate recognition of the party’s decisions concerning Gabam’s suspension and eventual expulsion.

Gombe who noted that the party followed due constitutional process before removing Gabam, including suspension, investigation and an opportunity for defence which he allegedly ignored, said, “The NEC, which is the highest organ of the party after convention, ratified his expulsion. He refused to appear before the disciplinary committee and never appealed within the constitutional timeframe.”

Stressing that the Supreme Court ruling reinforced the long-standing legal principle that internal party disputes remain matters for political parties themselves, Gombe said, “The Supreme Court has again made it clear that issues concerning internal party affairs are within the jurisdiction of the party.”

On his part, Agunloye who accused the electoral body of sidelining official correspondence sent by the SDP regarding the disciplinary measures against Gabam, said, “The chairman of INEC admitted no correspondence on Gabam’s suspension or expulsion was brought before him, yet we have acknowledged copies showing those documents were submitted.”

The National Secretary who noted that the crisis was being falsely portrayed as a struggle for control of the party rather than a disciplinary matter, said, “What we are having in SDP is not a leadership tussle. A member committed infractions, the party disciplined him, and that action was ratified by party organs!”

Also speaking, Senator Ugochukwu Uba who hailed the verdict, describing it as a victory for institutional democracy within political parties, said, “Political parties must be allowed to enforce discipline within their structures without interference.”

Friday’s ruling stemmed from six appeals heard by the Supreme Court on May 12, 2026, including Fayemi Tosin Babatunde vs INEC & 4 Ors (SC/CV/229/2026).

The apex court ruled that the plaintiffs lacked locus standi, thereby nullifying earlier pronouncements made by the Court of Appeal on SDP leadership and the Ekiti governorship primary dispute.

DELSUTH Doctors Threaten Indefinite Strike Over Poor Facilities, Allowances

The industrial crisis rocking the Delta State University Teaching Hospital, DELSUTH, on Friday deepened as doctors under the aegis of the Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria, MDCAN, warned of an impending indefinite strike over what they described as deteriorating hospital conditions, unpaid professional allowances and alleged intimidation of union leaders.

The association, which commenced a one-week warning strike on May 18, said the industrial action was aimed at compelling the Delta State Government to implement the Revised Professional Allowances currently enjoyed by doctors in federal health institutions and urgently address the “poor state” of the hospital.

But beyond the welfare dispute, the doctors also accused hospital authorities of attempting to suppress growing concerns over the condition of the institution through intimidation and media management tactics rather than addressing the underlying problems.

In a press statement jointly signed by the Chairmen, Dr. Abolodje Efe and Secretary, Dr. Nwajei Anita after an Emergency General Meeting, EGM, MDCAN said the response of the Ministry and hospital management to the doctors’ demands had included what it described as coercive measures targeted at the union leadership.

According to the association, its chairman was subjected to “a Facebook blackmail attempt,” issued a query letter and dragged before an investigative panel over an unsigned and unattributed Facebook post.

The association described the actions as victimisation and warned that continued intimidation of its leadership could worsen the already tense situation within the hospital.

“MDCAN DELSUTH reiterates its call for an immediate end to the victimisation of the Chairman,” they stated.

The association warned that failure to urgently address the issues raised could trigger a total and indefinite strike capable of paralysing healthcare delivery within the institution.

The doctors also alleged attempts to prevent independent assessment of the hospital’s condition after Channels Television was invited by the association for what it described as a fact-finding mission to the hospital but was allegedly denied access by the management.

According to MDCAN, shortly after the failed visit, the hospital management reportedly invited another media organisation while hurried clean-up and repair activities allegedly commenced across parts of the facility.

The association claimed that on May 22, observers noticed ongoing work from the hospital gate to wards and corridors, allegedly aimed at presenting a more favourable image of the hospital ahead of a planned media visit.

“A staff member informed the Chairman that a media house was expected to visit, while the Acting Chief Medical Director also acknowledged that a media crew was coming,” the statement said.

“Rather than addressing the concerns raised by MDCAN, there appears to be an attempt to suppress the truth and mislead the public about the actual state of the hospital.”

At the centre of the dispute are allegations of worsening infrastructure decay, non-functional equipment and deteriorating welfare conditions, which doctors say are fueling an exodus of specialists from the institution.

MDCAN alleged that several doctors have continued to leave DELSUTH for neighbouring federal institutions including the National Orthopaedic Hospital and the Federal Medical Centre due to the failure to implement the Revised Professional Allowances approved by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, NSIWC.

According to the association, the growing brain drain is placing enormous pressure on the few doctors left within the system and threatening healthcare delivery.

“Doctors are leaving in droves because welfare conditions are no longer sustainable,” the association stated.

The doctors warned that if urgent intervention is not made by the Delta State Government, the looming indefinite strike could cripple clinical services, disrupt residency training programmes and destabilise the medical school programme linked to the teaching hospital.

“There is an anticipated total and indefinite strike that could paralyse clinical activities, residency training and medical school programmes if these issues are not addressed urgently,” MDCAN warned.

The association urged the Delta State Government to immediately intervene to prevent what it described as a looming healthcare crisis at the state-owned tertiary hospital.

They stressed that the warning strike, which began on May 18, is expected to continue through the week as uncertainty grows over possible negotiations between the doctors, hospital management, and state authorities.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced the partnership during the signing ceremony on the sidelines of the Education World Forum in London.

According to the Minister, the initiative aims to equip young Nigerians with globally relevant competencies in high-demand areas such as artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, cloud computing, and software engineering.

“Digital competency is now essential for success in today’s world,” Dr. Alausa said, adding that the programme reflects the Renewed Hope Agenda’s focus on youth empowerment, innovation, and human capital development.

Participants will receive training and earn internationally recognised certifications that are valued by employers worldwide, enhancing their chances of securing opportunities in the global digital economy.

The programme will be implemented in collaboration with the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH).

Troops of Operation Whirl Stroke have foiled an attempt by armed militia members to disrupt the ongoing All Progressives Congress primary elections in Benue State, arresting one suspect and recovering weapons and ammunition during the operation.

The incident occurred on May 16, 2026, in Aliade, Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State, where troops swiftly responded to the activities of the armed group.

“Troops of Operation SAVANNAH SHIELD targeted the underground networks facilitating communication, armaments, and medical/ drug logistics for active terrorist cells. On 14 May 2026, troops at FOB Kaiama arrested a terrorist operative who masterminded an earlier attack on police personnel at Tenebu village, following a communication intercept where the suspect explicitly described his role in the assault, ” Onoja said.

Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command have arrested two suspects for alleged involvement in the peddling of illicit drugs in Nkanu East Local Government Area of the state.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed the arrests in a statement made available on Friday.

The police spokesperson stated that operatives attached to the Surveillance Team of the Agbani Area Command raided a notorious hideout at Umuiba Nara in Nkanu East LGA on May 21, 2026, at about 6:25 a.m., leading to the arrest of one Ani James, 35.

Ndukwe said, “Upon interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to engaging in the illicit buying and selling of ‘Loud’, ‘Colos’ and other variants of Cannabis sativa. Several sachets and wraps containing the suspected illicit substances were recovered from him.”

In a related development, the operatives, on May 16, 2026, at about 7:30 a.m., acting on actionable intelligence, apprehended a 50-year-old man, Edeh Ikechukwu, at Isigwe Ugbawka, also in Nkanu East LGA.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it will study the court ruling voiding the general election timetable.

On Wednesday, a federal high court in Abuja nullified the timelines of INEC for the conduct of party primaries and the nomination of candidates.

According to the revised timetable issued by INEC, all political parties were expected to submit their membership registers by May 10, conduct primaries to select candidates, and apply for withdrawals and submit replacements for the 2027 general election before the end of May.

But the court ruled that the commission lacks the statutory powers to abridge timelines provided under the Electoral Act, 2026.

The suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/517/2016, was filed by the Youth Party (YP) on March 11 with INEC as the sole defendant.

The plaintiff, through its counsel, J.O. Olotu, sought several reliefs, including a declaration that INEC’s powers to receive notices of party primaries and candidates’ particulars, as well as its duty to monitor the exercises under sections 29, 82 and 84(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, do not extend to fixing timelines for political parties to conduct primaries ahead of the 2027 general election.

In a judgement delivered by Mohammed Umar, presiding judge, said INEC cannot “fix or prescribe the timetable within which political parties may conduct their primary elections for the purpose of nominating candidates for the 2027 general elections”.

The judge ruled that the powers granted to INEC under sections 29, 82, and 84(1) of the Electoral Act do not extend to determining timelines for party primaries.

“A declaration is hereby made that upon a proper consideration and interpretation of the provisions of sections 29, 82 and 84(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, the powers of the defendant to receive notice of party primaries and the personal particulars of candidates, and its duty to attend, observe and monitor such primaries, does not extend to fixing or prescribing the timetable within which political parties may conduct their primary elections,” the judge ruled.

Umar also held that INEC cannot lawfully shorten the statutory period allowed for political parties to submit the particulars of candidates.

Speaking with TheCable on Friday, Victoria Eta-Messi, INEC’s director of voter education and publicity, said the commission would critically study the court verdict before taking any decision.

In a video clip shared on his official Facebook page on Friday, VDM recalled footage he earlier posted on social media pages in December 11, 2024.

In the video, the self-acclaimed online police accused Wike of forcefully collecting an estate in the Life Camp area of the FCT and allocating same to his kinsmen, including Chinda.

“Wike woke up one morning and said he had revoked it. One of those who has a big share in the whole of this thing is the Minority Leader in the House of Representatives in the name of Kingsley Chinda,” he said in the old video.

The National Working Committee, NWC, of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC has unveiled a 20-member National Selection Committee to oversee the screening and selection of aspirants ahead of its forthcoming governorship and National Assembly primaries.

The National Selection Committee will be formally inaugurated on Monday, 25th May, 2026, and thereafter, expected to hold its inaugural meeting immediately.

The party disclosed this in a statement signed on Friday by its National Secretary, Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, stating that the move was part of efforts to ensure transparency, internal democracy and credible candidate selection.

According to the statement, the decision was approved by the party’s National Leader following recommendations by the NWC as preparations intensify for the primaries.

The Committee is expected to review and scrutinise reports submitted by the National Screening Committee and take final decisions on the screening outcomes of all aspirants seeking to contest on the party’s platform.

AFCON Controversy will not change Senegal's Status as Champions, says Ndiaye

Everton and Senegal winger Iliman Ndiaye has insisted that Senegal national football team still consider themselves the rightful champions of Africa despite the ongoing dispute surrounding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title.

Senegal defeated Morocco national football team 1-0 after extra time in the AFCON final earlier this year, but controversy erupted after several Senegal players walked off the pitch in protest following a late penalty awarded to Morocco.

In March, an appeals board of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) ruled that Senegal had breached tournament regulations by leaving the field without the referee’s permission and subsequently awarded the title to Morocco.

Senegal’s football federation has since challenged the ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

As reported by BBC Sport on Friday, speaking about the situation, Ndiaye said the decision had not changed how the team viewed its achievement.

“Obviously, in our eyes and many other people’s eyes, we are the champions of Africa.

“Whatever their decisions will be, it doesn’t disturb us,” he told BBC World Service.

The Everton forward added that Senegal remained fully focused on the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 and would not allow the controversy to become a distraction.

“The same focus and hunger and determination that we had going into the AFCON, we’re going to do the same going into the World Cup.

“It’s another trophy on the line and nothing’s going to distract us,” he said.

Ndiaye also reflected on the dramatic scenes during the final in Rabat, where Senegal players protested after a late goal was ruled out before Morocco were awarded a stoppage-time penalty.

“It was just a bit of unfairness that happened for us.

“That’s what we thought on the pitch with the goal being disallowed and then the penalty, which we don’t think was a penalty, in the space of a short time.”

“Emotions were really high and you do things straight away,” he added.

The 26-year-old admitted that the fallout from the final and the subsequent CAF ruling had not reflected well on African football.

“It wasn’t a great look so I just hope they put it right,” Ndiaye added.

Senegal are grouped alongside France, Norway and Iraq for the World Cup finals, which will be staged in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Nigerian billionaire businessman and socialite, Obi Cubana, has reportedly quietly deleted all posts connected to the City Boy Movement from his Instagram page.

Obi Cubana has been facing backlash from ordinary Nigerians for publicly backing the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

He was appointed as the South-East Coordinator of the pro-Tinubu organization. At the time of filing this report, there has not been any official statement from him concerning the development.

The City Boy Movement is a youth-driven political advocacy and civic engagement platform dedicated to promoting the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu.

It was formed to mobilize grassroots support, with the aim of empowering young Nigerians and bridging the gap between the government and local communities.

The group is said to have hosted campus tours, rallies and food drives to distribute cash grants and relief materials to vulnerable households across Nigeria.

Five injured as container vessel, oil tanker collide in Rivers

A collision has occurred between a container vessel and an oil tanker at the Bonny Inner Anchorage in Rivers state.

The accident, which occurred on May 20, 2026, led to an oil spill in the area.

A statement on Friday by Osagie Edward, spokesperson of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), said the deep blue forwarding base (FOB) mobilised 10 armed personnel to the affected area.

Edward said five crew members of the oil tanker known as MT Lady Martina sustained injuries and were taken to a medical facility.

The NIMASA spokesperson said the oil tanker drifted ashore and is currently aground along the Bonny channel, while the container vessel known as MV Valparaiso remains grounded at the Bonny Inner Anchorage.

“The Deep Blue Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Bonny received a distress call at approximately 1130 hours regarding the collision involving MV Valparaiso, a Singapore-flagged container vessel with IMO No. 9433054, and MT Lady Martina, a Nigerian-flagged oil products tanker with IMO No. 5104033,” the statement reads.

“In response, the Base immediately deployed 10 armed personnel onboard DB 214, one of the interceptor boats under the Deep Blue Project, to the scene of the incident.

“Five crew members onboard MT Lady Martina sustained varying degrees of injuries and were promptly evacuated to the FOB Bonny sickbay for medical attention.

“Following the collision, MT Lady Martina drifted ashore and is currently aground along the Bonny Channel, while MV Valparaiso remains grounded at the Bonny Inner Anchorage pending damage assessment and further investigation.

“The management of MAERSK has officially reported the incident to the Agency. Consequently, the Director General of NIMASA, Dayo Mobereola, has ordered a full investigation into the immediate and remote causes of the collision.

“In addition, NIMASA has established a Situation Monitoring Room to coordinate response efforts and monitor developments arising from the incident.”

College of Education Admissions to Reduce Pressure on Varsities - NCCE

The National Commission for Colleges of Education has said the new Dual Mandate Policy, which empowers Colleges of Education to award degrees, will help reduce pressure on university admissions across Nigeria.

The Executive Secretary of the NCCE, Angela Ajala, made this known on Friday during a media parley at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja themed ‘A New Dawn for Teacher Education in Nigeria.’

Under the new policy, qualified Federal Colleges of Education will be able to independently award both the Nigeria Certificate in Education and Bachelor’s Degrees in Education without affiliation to universities.

Previously, the institutions operated under affiliated universities for degree awards.

Ajala said the reform is designed to expand access to higher education, reduce overcrowding in universities, and strengthen teacher training in the country.

“The policy will expand access to higher education; reduce pressure on universities; strengthen teacher specialisation; improve institutional autonomy; and attract more candidates into teaching,” she stated.

The NCCE boss noted that the reform followed the enactment of the Federal Colleges of Education Act No. 132 of July 24, 2023, signed into law by President Bola Tinubu, and directed that full implementation would begin from the 2026/2027 academic session.

According to her, the commission is already working with the National Universities Commission to “work out the modalities for its seamless take-off as directed by the Federal Government.

“A draft curriculum that allows NCE to dovetail into the degree programmes has been drafted by the commission and forwarded to NUC for more inputs to ensure that the quality of the degrees to be awarded by Colleges of Education is at par with that of the universities.

Ajala added that under the new structure, “NCE programme is to run for three years, while degree components will be for two years.”

Ajala said state and private CoE would also be allowed to implement the policy once they domesticate the reform framework.

The NCCE boss maintained that the reform was not intended to erase the identity of CoE but to strengthen it.

She explained, “Let no one misunderstand this reform. The Dual Mandate is not about making Colleges of Education lose their identity.

“It is about strengthening that identity. It is about saying that teacher education must no longer be treated as a lower pathway. It is a professional pathway. It is a national development pathway. It is a future-shaping pathway.

“It means a student who chooses a College of Education today is not choosing a lesser path.”

Ajala said the commission was also reviewing admission pathways into CoE to improve access while maintaining standards.

She said the commission was already engaging relevant agencies and stakeholders on a more flexible admission framework for teacher education.

The ES stated, “The commission is aware of concerns around access, enrolment, admission processes and the attractiveness of the NCE pathway.

“We are currently in active discussions with relevant agencies and stakeholders on a more flexible, professionally responsive admission framework for teacher education, especially for the NCE.

“The goal is simple: We want to remove administrative barriers, not professional standards.”

Ajala stressed that while access to teacher education must improve, standards would not be compromised.

According to her, the commission’s position was that young Nigerians interested in the teaching profession should not be discouraged by avoidable bottlenecks.

“What we are saying is that a young Nigerian who is passionate about teaching should not be discouraged by avoidable administrative obstacles,” she stated.

Ajala stressed that Nigeria needed “prepared teachers, professional teachers, competent teachers, ethical teachers, future-ready teachers.”

The NCCE boss also used the occasion to announce wider reforms in teacher education, saying the commission was shifting from being merely a compliance regulator to a development-focused agency.

“NCCE is not just a compliance agency. Yes, we regulate. Yes, we accredit. Yes, we monitor standards. Yes, we review institutional readiness.

“But under this administration, NCCE must become more than a commission that checks files, inspects facilities and submits reports.

“We are shifting from being seen only as a compliance regulator to becoming a development-focused agency,” she noted.

She said the commission would now pay more attention to learning outcomes and the quality of teachers produced by Colleges of Education.

Ajala added, “We will not only ask: What is in the accreditation report? We must also ask: What is happening to the child in the classroom?

“We must be concerned about whether the teacher produced can teach effectively, inspire learners, use technology, support children, solve classroom problems and improve learning.”

Ajala further revealed that the teacher education curriculum was being redesigned to align with global realities and emerging technologies.

She listed digital literacy, artificial intelligence awareness, entrepreneurship education, inclusive education, emotional intelligence, STEM education and competency-based learning among the major focus areas of the revised curriculum.

“We cannot prepare teachers for chalkboard-only classrooms when children are growing up in a digital world.

“We cannot prepare teachers for rote learning when the global economy now demands creativity, collaboration, communication, problem-solving and innovation,” ES stated.

Addressing journalists during the media parley, Ajala described the media as a key partner in the reform process and urged journalists to help change public perceptions about teaching.

“For too long, teaching has been portrayed as a last-resort profession. That narrative is inaccurate. That narrative is harmful. That narrative must change,” she said.

Ajala added that teacher education remained central to national development and called on stakeholders across the country to support the reform efforts.

The NCCE was established on 17 January 1989 as the regulatory body responsible for the orderly development, coordination and quality assurance of teacher education in Nigeria.

Ajala is the first female and seventh ES of NCCE, appointed by President Tinubu on March 10, 2026 and resumed on March 17, 2026.

2027: ADC Begins Governorship Primaries in Rivers State

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Rivers State has officially kicked off its governorship primary election across the state.

The exercise is taking place on Friday, May 22, 2026, in all 319 wards of Rivers State, using the Option A4 voting system.

Members of the party’s National Election Committee (NEC) are on ground to supervise the process.Prior to the commencement of the primaries, two of the seven governorship aspirants stepped down in support of Gabriel Pidomson, a former member of the Rivers State House of Assembly and one-time Secretary to the Rivers State Government.

One of the aspirants who withdrew is Henry Ugboma.The remaining candidates in the contest are Sokonte Davies, Farah Dagogo, Leloonu Nwibubasa, Allen Hart, and Gabriel Pidomson.
