‘They hate Nigerians’ – Daniel Bwala slams Atiku, Peter Obi

President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has knocked the presidential candidates of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, and the Nigerian Democratic Congress, NDC, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, respectively, accusing them of hating Nigerians.

Bwala was reacting to the alleged violation of airport parking regulations by Peter Obi and Atiku’s silence since the abducted Oyo State pupils and teachers were rescued by the security operatives.

In a post on X, Bwala wondered why Obi and Atiku are called “themselves opposition that want to collect power and better Nigeria, but they hate Nigerians and Nigeria by their conduct”.

“One violated airport traffic control rules, his car was clamped, and he lied that they wanted to kill him (toddler ranting shit);

“The other is quick to tweet about Nigeria is doomed, but when our pupils and their teachers were rescued, he pretended like he is quarantined in a place where there is no access to information; No show of empathy and solidarity”.

According to Bwala, the two politicians “love to use misfortunes of people for politics, but they hate the very idea of human dignity and freedom”.

“Desperate people do desperate things,” he added.

Makinde Reveals Troops Were Killed During Rescue of Abducted Oyo Pupils

Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo state, says all 39 pupils abducted in Oriire LGA have regained their freedom, alongside five of the seven teachers kidnapped with them, but some security personnel lost their lives during the rescue operation.

Speaking on Saturday after visiting the rescued pupils and teachers, who are receiving medical care following their release from captivity, Makinde said that although the victims were relieved to regain their freedom, many were still battling the psychological effects of their ordeal.

On Friday, the Nigerian Army announced that the victims were rescued after a month-long intelligence-led operation involving troops and other security agencies.

The army said multiple arrests disrupted the kidnappers’ network and forced the group to release the victims.

‘WE LOST SOME OFFICERS’

Makinde expressed gratitude to the military and other security agencies for securing the victims’ release.

“I’m very happy the children are back, all of them, 39 of them,” he said.

“Also, five of the seven teachers, so we give glory to God and we say thank you to our troops, the officers and men. We lost some officers and part of our troops as well.

“So all the families that have lost loved ones in this whole process, we want to assure them that their loved ones will not have died in vain. So I’m extremely, extremely happy.

“First, I can say that they were happy to be out of captivity, just like any of us.

“When your freedom is taken away, it’s a different state of mind. But they are glad to be back. Some of them are still very afraid.

“They have to do quite a bit of medical intervention, post-traumatic issues to be addressed. But we have the team ready to do that.”

Makinde said the pupils and teachers would remain under medical observation for another 48 hours before being formally handed over to the Oyo state government.

“With the plan right now, we’ll watch them over the next 48 hours,” he said.

“So by Monday, we think an assessment will be done. And maybe there will be a formal transfer from the military to the state.

“And then we can manage the process from that point forward.”

He said arrangements were being made to enable family members visit the rescued victims.

“But also today, we are putting logistics together to at least bring the family members to come and see them,” he said.

“There’s a small girl in there that basically has been asking, ‘Where’s my mom? Where’s my mom?’

“So at least we want the mom to be able to come and then see her.”

‘NIGERIA’S CHALLENGES REQUIRE UNITY’

Makinde urged Nigerians to unite in confronting the country’s security challenges.

“My final message is that it’s our country,” he said.

“All countries around the world, they do have challenges.

“So when we’re challenged, it’s not usually the best time for us to sow seeds of division.

“It’s the best time for us to come together and confront our challenges.

“So that’s really what, at this moment, I want to say to the people.”

The governor added that he would officially brief Oyo residents and Nigerians later in the week on the circumstances surrounding the abduction and the rescue operation.

Vice-President Kashim Shettima says procurement reforms introduced by the federal government saved more than N1.1 trillion in 2025.

Shettima spoke on Friday at the 2026 retreat for federal permanent secretaries in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom state.

The retreat was organised by the office of the head of the civil service of the Federation and the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP).

The vice-president, represented by Tunji Olaopa, chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission, said the reforms are part of the Tinubu administration’s efforts to strengthen transparency, accountability and fiscal discipline in public spending.

“So far, 23 strategic initiatives and reforms aimed at improving transparency, accountability and fiscal discipline in Nigeria have been introduced,” he said.

“As at the last count, some of the reforms saved the federal government over N1.1 trillion in 2025 alone.”

Shettima said one of the reforms involved raising procurement approval thresholds, allowing contracts below N5 billion for goods and services and N10 billion for works to be handled by ministerial tender boards instead of the federal executive council (FEC).

He said every “road constructed, hospital equipped, school rehabilitated, agricultural intervention implemented and every digital platform deployed passed through the procurement process”.

The vice-president said the administration remains committed to reforming Nigeria’s procurement system in line with global best practices to improve governance, budget implementation, and service delivery.

On her part, Esther Walson-Jack, the head of the civil service of the federation, said procurement sits at the centre of governance because it links policy, budgeting, and service delivery.

“When procurement works well, government delivers. When procurement is delayed, weak or poorly managed, citizens feel the consequences,” she said.

Walson-Jack said permanent secretaries, as accounting officers and managers of procurement, have a serious responsibility for good governance and service delivery as they are expected to ensure that procurement processes are transparent, competitive, efficient and consistent with the Public Procurement Act and extant regulations.

Adebowale Adedokun, director-general of the BPP, described procurement as a key instrument of governance, saying it serves as the link between budget approval and service delivery.

He said the quality of procurement determines the quality of governance, as roads, hospitals, schools and security infrastructure are delivered through the procurement process.

One dead, seven injured as section of Gombe assembly complex collapses

One person has died, and seven others sustained injuries following the collapse of a section of the new Gombe state house of assembly complex.

The Gombe state government said the incident occurred on Friday when a section of the cantilevered entrance canopy being constructed gave way at the project site.

The new Gombe state house of assembly complex is one of the major public infrastructure projects being executed by the administration of Inuwa Yahaya.

The state government said it has commenced an investigation to determine the cause of the collapse and prevent a recurrence.

In a statement signed by Danladi Adamu, permanent secretary of the ministry of works, housing and transportation, the government said eight workers were involved in the incident.

The statement said seven injured workers were immediately evacuated for medical attention, while one person died.

The government added that five of the injured are receiving treatment at the Gombe State Specialist Hospital, while two others are being treated at the Federal Teaching Hospital (FTH), Gombe.

The statement said Yahaya had been briefed on the incident and expressed condolences to the family of the deceased.

The governor also directed that all injured workers receive comprehensive medical treatment at the government’s expense.

He ordered the ministry of works, housing and transportation, alongside relevant emergency, regulatory and technical agencies, to immediately commence established safety and accountability procedures.

The government said the contractor and project consultant have been directed to submit a formal incident report within 24 hours.

It added that the report would be followed by a preliminary investigation report and a comprehensive technical report containing findings and recommendations.

‘FACTS WILL GUIDE GOVERNMENT’S ACTIONS’

The government said decisions on the incident would be guided by the outcome of the investigation.

“As the investigation is underway, the Government will allow the established facts to guide all necessary decisions and actions,” the statement reads.

“Appropriate measures will be taken in line with the outcome of the investigation and applicable standards.”

The state government reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring strict compliance with safety, quality and engineering standards in the execution of public infrastructure projects.

Four relatives linked to insurgents have surrendered to troops of Operation HADIN KAI after escaping from a terrorist enclave in the Mandara Mountains, Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama confirmed that the group, two women, a teenager, and an infant turned themselves in at about 8:30 a.m. on July 10 to soldiers of C Company, 192 Battalion (Mechanised) stationed in Gwoza.

The surrendered individuals were identified as Hauwa Muhammadu (40), Aisha Muhammadu (22), Adamu Muhammadu (15), and 10‑month‑old Muhammad Mustapha.

They fled the Kunde enclave, one of the last hideouts of Boko Haram/ISWAP fighters in the Mandara Mountains.Preliminary investigations revealed that the family left due to sustained military offensives and worsening humanitarian conditions inside the camp.

“Continuous operations by troops, coupled with severe shortages of food and basic necessities, made survival increasingly difficult, forcing them to flee,” Makama explained.

During screening, troops recovered ₦32,100 from the family. They have since been documented in line with military procedures and remain in the custody of the 192 Battalion for further profiling and administrative action.

US lawmaker reveals those responsible for christian genocide in Nigeria

ExxonMobil commits $1bn to Nigeria’s Usan oil field

ExxonMobil and its partners have committed $1 billion to the on-block activities for the Usan Infill project in oil mining lease (OML) 138.

According to a statement by Eniola Akinkuotu, NUPRC spokesperson, Jagir Baxir, managing director (MD) of ExxonMobil affiliates in Nigeria, announced the investment commitment at the ongoing 2026 NOG Energy Week Conference on Tuesday.

In his remarks, Baxir commended the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and other government agencies for their role in facilitating the project.

Addressing the investment commitment, Akinkuotu said it is expected to add 40,000 barrels per day.

“Esso Exploration and Production is the operator of OML 138, which contains the Usan field. The block is operated under a Production Sharing Contract with NNPC Limited,” he said.

“Co-venture partners in OML 138 include Chevron, TotalEnergies, and Nexen, a wholly owned subsidiary of CNOOC.

“As a short-cycle investment, the project is expected to sustain and increase production from the Usan field, with first production within 18 months after the seismic data identified the investment opportunity.”

Also, Oritsemyiwa Eyesan, NUPRC chief executive officer (CEO), said the announcement was particularly important because Esso Exploration and Production Nigeria – ExxonMobil’s affiliate – had not undertaken any drilling operation since 2016.

“With Esso’s last drilling operation dating back to 2016, the resumption of drilling signals renewed potential and value in our deep water acreage,” she said.

Eyesan said the NUPRC remains steadfast in advancing Nigeria’s portfolio of deep water projects.

She noted that the projects are critical to meeting the country’s production targets, boosting oil and gas reserves, sustaining government revenue, and strengthening investor confidence.

NUPRC PRESENTS PPLs TO AWARDEES

According to the statement, the NUPRC presented petroleum prospecting licences (PPLs) from the successful conclusion of the 2022/2023 mini bid round and the Nigeria 2024 licensing round.

“Some of the companies that were presented with their awards at the venue include: Broron Energy Limited (PPL 2009), Petroli Energy Marketing and Supply Limited (PPL 269), Sahara Deepwater Resources Limited (PPL 270 and PPL 271) and Tulcan Energy E&P Co (PPL 2008),” NUPRC said.

The commission said execution ceremonies for companies whose representatives were absent would be held at later dates agreed upon by both parties.

According to the NUPRC, the exercise covers 12 successful awardees across 19 PPLs, spanning a balanced mix of deep offshore, shallow water and continental shelf acreages.

The commission said the portfolio reflects the wide range of investment opportunities offered through the licensing rounds.

NUPRC described the awards as another major milestone in Nigeria’s ongoing drive to attract investment into the upstream petroleum sector.

The commission added that the awards would help accelerate exploration activities, expand the country’s hydrocarbon reserves, and generate long-term value for the Nigerian economy.

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have arrested a suspected logistics supplier to the Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP, while attempting to transport a large consignment of pharmaceutical drugs towards Damboa in Borno State.

This is contained in a post on X by a security expert, Zagazola Makama on Saturday.

Zagazola said the suspect was intercepted at about 11:00 a.m. on July 10 during routine security screening by intelligence personnel of the 18 Battalion deployed at the Molai Main Entrance Gate on the outskirts of Maiduguri.

He identified the suspect as Mohammed Goni, 31, who was travelling in a vehicle heading towards Damboa when troops subjected the vehicle to a routine search.

Zagazola added that the search led to the discovery of a large quantity of assorted pharmaceutical drugs in the suspect’s possession.

He was unable to produce any valid clearance or documentation authorising the movement of the medical supplies to the conflict-prone area.

“The circumstances surrounding the movement of the drugs raised suspicion, prompting the troops to immediately detain the suspect for further interrogation,” he said.

According to him, the suspect has since been handed over to the Military Intelligence Brigade for detailed investigation to determine the source of the drugs, their intended destination and any possible links to ISWAP’s logistics network operating within the North-East.

The arrest, he said, forms part of ongoing intelligence-led efforts by Operation HADIN KAI to dismantle terrorist logistics networks by intercepting critical supplies before they reach insurgent enclaves. Investigations are ongoing.

According to The New York Times, the findings stem from research by Antonia Juelich of the University of Cambridge, who interviewed former Boko Haram members in Nigeria over the past year.

One former commander explained: “We used AI to learn how to do this. While analysts caution that AI is unlikely to radically transform terrorism in the short term, they warn that it could accelerate knowledge-sharing among extremist groups and improve the capabilities of lower-level operatives.

Tech companies such as OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic reiterated that using their products for terrorism violates policies, stressing that safeguards are continually being strengthened to block dangerous queries.

Mohammed Dewji, the Tanzanian billionaire and president of MeTL Group, says he is willing to invest $100 million in Aliko Dangote’s proposed oil refinery in Kenya as the Nigerian industrialist seeks to expand his refining business into East Africa.

According to a Bloomberg report on Friday, Dewji said he had discussed the project with Dangote and would participate in the investment even though he would have preferred the refinery to be built in Tanzania.

The development comes days after reports that Dangote Group is planning to build a $17 billion refinery on Kenya’s coast, a project expected to take about five years to complete if it proceeds.

Speaking on the planned investment, Dewji said the project aligns with efforts to solve Africa’s industrialisation challenges by refining the continent’s resources locally.

“I have spoken to Aliko, what he has done is unbelievable in Nigeria, and I got to spend some time with him,” the billionaire said.

“What he’s trying to do in East Africa is also fantastic and, as a matter of fact, I will also reach out to him that putting a refinery in East Africa, I will co-invest with him.

“These are the vision of solving African problems. We cannot be dependent on imports. We need to use resources and value-add and refine and manufacture to be sovereigns.”

Dewji said while he would have preferred Tanzania as the location for the refinery, he remains willing to invest if the project is eventually sited in Kenya.

The proposed refinery would mark Dangote Group’s first major refining investment outside Nigeria.

The conglomerate already operates the 650,000 barrels-per-day Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Lagos, the largest single-train refinery in Africa, which began commercial production in 2024.

If completed, the Kenyan refinery is expected to strengthen fuel supply in East Africa, reduce dependence on imported refined petroleum products and deepen regional energy integration.

In April, Aliko Dangote, chairman of Dangote Group, vowed to replicate his Nigerian refinery in East Africa with support from governments in the region.

Atiku Abubakar, former vice-president and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), says President Bola Tinubu should have addressed Nigerians after the release of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo state.

Atiku said while the successful operation deserves commendation, the president missed an opportunity to demonstrate leadership by publicly briefing the nation on what transpired.

On Friday, the Nigerian Army said a month-long intelligence-led operation involving the military, intelligence agencies, the police and local security outfits led to the rescue of 44 pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire LGA of Oyo state in May.

The army said multiple arrests disrupted the kidnappers’ network and forced the group to release the victims unconditionally.

In a statement issued on Saturday by Phrank Shaibu, his senior special assistant on public communication, Atiku welcomed the operation and commended the military and other security agencies for the mission.

“The rescue of innocent schoolchildren from the hands of terrorists is a victory for our gallant troops and a source of hope for every Nigerian family. They deserve the gratitude of the nation,” he said.

‘LEAD FROM THE FRONT’

Atiku said the military rose to the occasion, but the presidency failed to match the moment with visible leadership.

“Terrorism is unfortunately a global challenge. What distinguishes serious governments from indifferent ones is not whether attacks occur, but how political leaders respond when brave men and women in uniform deliver success against those who seek to terrorise their country,” he said.

“What Nigerians expected yesterday was to see a Commander-in-Chief leading from the front.

“Following the successful rescue operation, the President ought to have immediately addressed the nation alongside his defence chiefs — not merely to announce the good news, but to brief Nigerians on the operation, acknowledge the bravery of the troops, highlight the lessons learned, reassure families that no effort would be spared to rescue those still in captivity, and send an unmistakable message to bandits and terrorists that the Nigerian state remains resolute.

“Such moments are not ordinary press events; they are defining demonstrations of leadership that strengthen public confidence, boost military morale, and remind criminal elements that they are confronting a government that neither sleeps nor surrenders.”

Atiku said the responsibility for announcing the rescue was left to the president’s spokesman while Tinubu publicly engaged in political activities.

“The Commander-in-Chief is more than a constitutional title; it is a moral responsibility. In moments of national triumph and national grief, Nigerians expect to see their President embody that office,” he said.

“Leadership is not exercised only behind closed doors; it must also be seen, heard and felt by both the citizens and those who threaten them.”

‘ONE RESCUE SHOULD NOT END THE FIGHT’

The former vice-president said the successful operation should not overshadow the plight of other Nigerians still being held by kidnappers.

“One successful rescue must not become an excuse for self-congratulation. A nation cannot celebrate while other parents still go to bed not knowing whether their children are alive or dead,” he said.

“Our work is not done until every abducted Nigerian is safely reunited with his or her family.”

He urged the federal government to sustain pressure on terrorists, bandits and kidnappers until every abducted Nigerian is rescued.

“There is an old African proverb that says, ‘When the drum of danger beats, the village chief does not send a messenger to dance in his place,’” he added.

“Yesterday belonged to our brave soldiers, and they acquitted themselves with honour. But it should also have been the moment for the Commander-in-Chief to stand before the nation, salute their courage, comfort anxious families and send a chilling message to every bandit and terrorist that the Nigerian state will pursue them without rest until every captive is free.

“Leadership is not only measured by victories won on the battlefield, but by the courage displayed from the highest office in moments that define a nation.”

EFCC appeals judgment awarding Olu Agunloye N10m over defamatory publication

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has appealed the judgement of a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) high court ordering it to pay Olu Agunloye, former minister of power, N10 million in damages over a defamatory publication.

In an 11-ground notice of appeal filed before the Abuja division of the court of appeal, the anti-graft agency asked the appellate court to set aside the entire judgement delivered by Peter Kekemeke, judge of the FCT high court, on July 8, 2026, describing the decision as erroneous in law and against the weight of evidence.

The commission also asked the appellate court to dismiss Agunloye’s suit in its entirety.

Kekemeke, in his judgement, had held that the EFCC’s publication titled “EFCC arraigns Agunloye over $6bn fraud” was false and defamatory, ruling that the former minister of power was not standing trial for fraud.

The judge subsequently ordered the commission to pay Agunloye N10 million in damages, publish an unreserved apology on its website and in two national newspapers, retract the publication, and refrain from making similar publications about him.

However, in its appeal, the EFCC argued that the trial court failed to properly evaluate the evidence before it and wrongly concluded that Agunloye had established a case of libel.

GROUNDS OF APPEAL

The commission contended that the lower court overlooked key documentary evidence and the testimony of its witness, Umar Hussain Babangida, an assistant commissioner of police (ACP), which, according to it, supported the publication.

“The totality of the credible oral and documentary evidence adduced before the lower court preponderated overwhelmingly in favour of the Appellant,” the EFCC said.

The anti-graft agency added that had the trial judge “properly evaluated the evidence on record, particularly Exhibits A, B, D and E and the testimony of DW1 (ACP Umar Hussain Babangida), it would have dismissed the Respondent’s claim in its entirety”.

The EFCC further argued that the trial judge failed to consider all the legal ingredients required to establish libel, particularly whether the publication was false and whether it was protected by lawful justification or privilege.

According to the commission, Agunloye failed to prove those essential elements.

The EFCC maintained that the publication substantially reflected the facts surrounding Agunloye’s arraignment over the Mambilla hydroelectric power project.

“The gist of the publication, namely that the Respondent was arraigned by the Appellant in connection with fraud surrounding the $6 billion Mambilla Project, was substantially true,” the commission argued.

It added that the court wrongly dismissed the publication as “a mere sensational headline” and placed undue emphasis on what it described as a semantic distinction between the value of the Mambilla project and the offences contained in the charge.

The commission also argued that its publication was protected by the defences of justification, qualified privilege and fair comment, insisting that informing Nigerians about corruption cases falls within its statutory responsibilities.

It said the publication “was a fair, accurate and contemporaneous report of the arraignment of the Respondent conducted in open court”, adding that the judge erred by holding otherwise simply because the EFCC is an investigative agency and not a news organisation.

The commission further challenged the finding that it acted with malice, arguing that there was no evidence of spite, ill will or improper motive.

It submitted that its investigating officer testified that the publication was based on official investigation records and court proceedings, while Agunloye failed to produce evidence capable of establishing express malice.

On the issue of damages, the EFCC argued that Agunloye did not prove that the publication diminished his reputation.

The commission noted that one of Agunloye’s witnesses admitted he continued to hold the former minister in high regard after reading the publication, while Agunloye himself remained the national secretary of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

It argued that any damage to his reputation stemmed from the pending criminal proceedings rather than its report of those proceedings.

The commission also described the N10 million damages awarded by the trial court as “arbitrary, excessive, punitive and unsupported by any evidence”.

“The award is manifestly excessive and out of all proportion to the circumstances of the case, such as to warrant appellate interference,” it said.

The EFCC further faulted the orders directing it to apologise, retract the publication and refrain from making future publications concerning Agunloye, arguing that the injunction was vague and unduly restricted its statutory duty to inform the public about its activities.

It also contended that compelling the commission to apologise amounted to compelling speech despite what it described as documentary evidence establishing the substantial truth of the publication.

The anti-graft agency equally argued that Agunloye’s civil action ought not to have been entertained while his criminal trial over the Mambilla project remains pending.

“The respondent’s civil action was premature, the criminal charge against him being yet to be concluded and judgement delivered thereon,” the commission said.

It added that the trial court’s findings effectively prejudged issues that are still before another high court handling the criminal case.

Among the reliefs sought, the EFCC urged the court of appeal to allow the appeal; set aside the entire judgement, including the declaration that the publication was defamatory, the orders for retraction and apology, the perpetual injunction and the N10 million damages; and dismiss Agunloye’s suit in its entirety.
