Katsina-bound Max Air flight returns to Abuja after ‘crew detects engine anomaly’

A Max Air aircraft en route from Abuja to Katsina on Monday made an emergency return to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, after experiencing an “engine anomaly” mid-air.

According to a video shared on X, passengers were seen waiting on the tarmac after the aircraft landed safely in Abuja.

Narrating the incident, a passenger said the aircraft developed the fault about 10 minutes after takeoff, suddenly losing altitude.

“We are currently at the airport following a distressing incident involving a Max Air flight from Abuja to Katsina,” the passenger narrated in the video.

“Approximately 10 minutes into the flight, the aircraft experienced a sudden technical failure, causing it to lose altitude rapidly as if it were falling.

“The pilots managed to regain control and immediately performed an emergency return to Abuja for our safety. We have since landed safely, but we are currently stranded on the tarmac.”

The passenger said several high-profile individuals were onboard the flight, including Abba, son of Dahiru Mangal; the senior special assistant on digital media to the Katsina governor, the governor’s media assistant, and other government officials.

“At this moment, our fate remains uncertain. We are waiting for a decision from Max Air officials on whether they will repair the aircraft for us to re-board or provide an alternative plane,” she said.

“We are still standing outside and feel completely stranded. Please keep us in your prayers as we wait for a resolution.”

‘OUR TEAM HAS COMMENCED ASSESSMENT ON AIRCRAFT’

In a statement on Tuesday, Max Air said the incident involved flight VM1620 operating the Abuja-Katsina route.

The airline said about 15 minutes after departure, the flight crew of aircraft 5N-DAB, a Boeing 737-300, identified “an indication of an engine anomaly”.

“In keeping with our standard operating procedures and the highest principles of aviation safety, the Crew decided to return the aircraft to Abuja immediately. The aircraft landed safely, and all passengers and crew disembarked without incident,” the statement reads.

“Following the air return, Max Air immediately coordinated the deployment of a second aircraft, 5N-DMK, from Kano to Abuja. The Abuja–Katsina route and other routes were subsequently operated.”

The airline added that its engineering and technical teams had commenced a full assessment of the aircraft in line with regulatory requirements.

“We remain in close contact with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and will cooperate fully with any review process,” Max Air said.

In January 2025, a Max Air aircraft crash-landed at the Mallam Aminu International Airport, Kano.

A video seen online showed that the aircraft, which arrived from Lagos, lost its landing gear tyre during landing, leading to the incident.

Peace Ibiyeomie, the wife of David Ibiyeomie, the presiding pastor of Salvation Ministries in Rivers state, has advised women against keeping close relationships with divorcees who are unwilling to reconcile or remarry.

Speaking during their Mother’s Day celebration service, Peace argued that some divorced women often discourage others from marriage while still maintaining relationships with men privately.

The clergywoman pointed out that if men are not important as some divorced women claim, they would not keep sexual relationships with them.

Peace also called on women to encourage divorced relatives or friends to either reconcile with their former spouses or remarry, instead of embracing bitterness toward men.

“Do not follow a divorcee as your friend even if she is your sister. Teach her, either she reconciles with her husband or she remarries. She will tell you that men are not important but meanwhile she goes at the back,” she said.

“I have seen so many examples of single ladies, some of them told me the truth that that it is a lie, that even as they are in church, they follow men. One opened up so much to me, that is why she wants to remarry.

2027: Shettima meets Ganduje, Kano ex-deputy gov in closed-door

Vice President Kashim Shettima on Tuesday held a closed-door meeting with a former Kano State Deputy Governor and immediate past Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Abdullahi Tijjani Gwarzo.

The meeting, which was held in Abuja, also had the member representing Bichi Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Abba Abubakar Kabir Bichi, in attendance.

In a post on Gwarzo’s verified Facebook page shortly after the meeting, the politicians discussed political developments and affairs in Kano North ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“Today, together with the former Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, and the member representing Bichi Federal Constituency, Abba Abubakar Kabir Bichi, we met with the Vice President of Nigeria, His Excellency Kashim Shettima,” the post stated.

According to the post, discussions centred on politics in Kano North and broader party affairs.

Cyber Threat: National Assembly Moves to Review Data Protection Act

The National Assembly has commenced moves to review the National Data Protection Act 2023 in response to emerging cyber threats and rapid technological advancements, particularly in Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Chairman of the Senate Committee on ICT and Cyber Security, Afolabi Salisu, disclosed this on Tuesday in Abuja during the opening of a three-day Data Protection Awareness Promotion workshop organised for the Joint National Assembly Committee on ICT by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) and Ampersand Development Partners.

Salisu said recent developments, including the rise of AI and the United Nations Convention on Cyber Crimes, had made it necessary to reassess the existing law to strengthen Nigeria’s cyber security and data governance framework.

According to him, there is a strong connection between data governance and cybercrime, stressing the need to reinforce areas of the Act where necessary to safeguard the country’s digital space.

“We need to ensure the security of our country, particularly in cyberspace, while also strengthening our data governance framework in line with technological advancements such as AI,” he said.

The senator noted that lawmakers must fully understand issues surrounding data privacy and protection to effectively legislate on them.

“You cannot legislate effectively in an area where you lack sufficient knowledge. This workshop provides an opportunity for legislators to build capacity, understand modern principles of data protection and position ourselves to review the National Data Protection Act,” he stated.

He added that after three years of implementation, the National Assembly would assess how well the law had addressed Nigeria’s data protection needs and compare it with global best practices.

“At the end of this exercise, we expect to develop a roadmap and timeline for the review of the National Data Protection Act,” he added.

Salisu also urged Nigerians to take responsibility for protecting their personal data, warning that many supposedly free public WiFi networks and mobile applications often harvest users’ data without their knowledge.

Also speaking, Chairman of the House Committee on ICT and Cyber Security, Stanley Olajide, described data as Nigeria’s “next prosperity resource,” saying the country’s future wealth would depend more on data than oil.

Olajide said strong data protection laws were essential to attracting foreign investment, noting that investors would only commit capital where adequate legal safeguards existed.

“Whatever data we have is our sovereign wealth and belongs to us. We must ensure the right legal frameworks are in place so that organisations or entities that breach data protection laws can be held accountable,” he said.

Drawing comparisons with the United States, he stressed the importance of ensuring that data generated within Nigeria remains protected under Nigerian laws and within the country’s jurisdiction.

ADC Notifies Public of Fraudulent Nomination Form Sales

The African Democratic Congress, ADC, has called on the public to beware of fraudulent activities relating to the sale of its nomination forms for the 2027 general elections.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said only official channels are valid, stressing that any official communication from the National Chairman or the National Working Committee, NWC, must be issued through the National Publicity Secretary.

It also stated that any other message claiming to represent the position of the National Chairman or NWC is false, unauthorized, and a blatant lie being spread on social media without shame.

The statement also said that the sale of nomination forms for the offices of President, Governor, Senate, and House of Representatives is constitutionally vested in the office of the National Organising Secretary, adding that the sale of nomination forms for State House of Assembly is handled at the State Party Headquarters.

According to the ADC, any sale, collection, or purported authorization outside these offices is a direct violation of the party constitution and the Electoral Act process.

It added that the National Chairman and the National Working Committee conduct all party activities and affairs in the states strictly through the recognized State Party Headquarters, noting that no individual or unauthorized group has the mandate to act outside this structure.

The party warned members and the public to disregard any fraudulent messages, unauthorized agents, and fake directives circulating online, stressing that those engaging in impersonation and misinformation will be dealt with in line with the party constitution and the law.

“The attention of the African Democratic Congress National Headquarters has been drawn to a viral video circulating on social media alleging that the National Chairman, David Mark, passed a message through a fraudulent stakeholder authorizing the sale of nomination forms.

“We urge all genuine members to remain focused, law-abiding, and committed to building a united ADC ahead of 2027,” the statement said.

Tinubu approves Nigeria’s bid to host 2026 CAF Awards ceremony

President Bola Tinubu has approved Nigeria’s proposed bid to host the 2026 CAF Awards ceremony.

According to a statement by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Tinubu also endorsed Nigeria’s proposal to host the CAF’s 48th Ordinary General Assembly later this year.

Tinubu announced the approvals at the ongoing Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, Kenya, following a meeting with Patrice Motsepe, CAF president.

Other dignitaries at the meeting include Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, the foreign minister; Samson Adamu, the acting CAF general secretary; Ibrahim Gusau, the NFF president; and Amaju Pinnick, the special adviser to the CAF president.

The CAF Ordinary General Assembly is scheduled for October and brings together leading figures in African football, including presidents of the confederation’s 54 member associations, representatives from the six zonal unions, and senior football officials from across the continent.

The CAF Awards is an annual showpiece event that rewards the continent’s best footballers and stakeholders.

New Tax act not just about raising revenue, says Oyedele

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, has said that the new Tax Act is not just about raising revenue but building trust among members of the Nigerian public.

He spoke virtually at the opening of the 2026 Annual Conference of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (COTN) in Abuja on Tuesday.

Mr. Oyedele said that while the government desired to generate more revenue, that objective could only be achieved through building trust among the people to see the importance of paying taxes for the good of all.

He said that the current tax regime had simplified tax payment, reduced the number of taxes and exempted low-income earners from payment of Personal Income Tax.

Oyedele charged the tax professionals to play the roles of advisors to the government, interpret the new tax laws to their clients and members of the public.

In his remarks, the Special Adviser to the President on Economic Matters in the Office of the Vice President, Dr. Tope Fashua, said fiscal policies need to constantly evolve.

His words, “Given recent events around the world, there is a need for government to be very prepared and for fiscal policies to continue to evolve.”

He noted that the fiscal reform was a process, adding, “It’s not going to be a walk in the park. It’s not going to be an easy affair; if it was, it would have been done a long time ago. So people will still complain about multiple taxation, levies from local government and all of that.

“I’m sure it still costs a lot to ship, to move a trailer from Kano to Lagos Port carrying commodities—many stoppages along the way.

“But the process has started to outlaw some of those collections. And of course, we also depend on Nigerians because again, those who are collecting this unnecessary money are also Nigerians. So we have to appeal to ourselves. We also have to be watchdogs.”

Fashua said there was a need to vigorously undertake a public awareness campaign around the new Tax Act, saying, “There’s an information lacuna, and in my own personal interactions in recent times, I was with a group of very young people who did not know that the tax reforms were good for them.

“So it takes time to be able to explain over and over again. In my other life as a marketer, we understand that it takes an average of five times to talk to somebody about an idea before it begins to sink in.”

The Special Adviser said the idea was to move Nigeria’s tax-to-GDP ratio from 10 per cent to 18 per cent, explaining that it used to be 6 per cent about three years ago.

Dr. Fashua disclosed that the government planned to reduce Company Income Tax from the current 30 per cent to 25 per cent.

In his address, the CITN President, Innocent Ohagwa, said this year’s conference theme was particularly significant because it directly focused on the most important tasks of “building a tax system that is globally relevant, economically competitive, socially equitable, and fiscally sustainable.”

His words, “I consider this conference to be one of the most strategic to Nigeria’s future. We are living in a period of profound economic transformation across the world. Economies are becoming increasingly digital.

“Capital is more mobile. Supply chains are changing. The government faces rising pressure to finance development sustainably.

“At the same time, citizens are rapidly demanding greater accountability, fairness, transparency, and better public services.

“In this environment, tax systems no longer remained static. Countries that fail to modernise their fiscal framework risk losing competitiveness, discouraging investment, widening inequality, and weakening economic resilience.

“These are risks Nigeria cannot afford to take and opportunities we cannot afford to lose. Nigeria must therefore position itself not only to respond to global changes but to compete effectively within them.”

Makinde to declare presidential ambition May 14

Akwa Ibom police denies involvement in alleged UUTH assault

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has denied reports circulating online alleging that police operatives invaded the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, UUTH, and assaulted medical personnel during an operation within the hospital premises.

The clarification was contained in a statement posted on the official page of the Public Relations Officer of the Command, DSP Timfon John, on May 12 2026.

According to the statement, the operation was carried out solely by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, during what the Command described as a lawful assignment.

The Police Command explained that the Chief Medical Director of UUTH had placed a distress call to the Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State after armed men were reportedly seen within the hospital premises and their identities could not immediately be confirmed.

The statement noted that the hospital management also directed the closure of the hospital gates as a precautionary measure.

Following the report, the Commissioner of Police was said to have deployed officers to the hospital to assess the situation and prevent any breakdown of law and order.

According to the Command, it was later confirmed that the operatives involved were personnel of the EFCC carrying out an official operation.

The statement said the Chief Medical Director was informed accordingly and advised to reopen the hospital gates to allow the EFCC personnel leave the premises peacefully.

The statement further alleged that the advice was not complied with, leading to increased tension within the environment.

“The EFCC operatives, who were allegedly held within the premises and pelted with stones, eventually forced open the gate in order to exit the hospital premises,” the statement said.

The Command maintained that police personnel did not participate in the operation and were not involved in any assault, use of teargas, or brutality against hospital staff as alleged in online reports.

The Command described reports linking police personnel to the incident as false and misleading, adding that such narratives were capable of creating unnecessary tension and misleading members of the public.

Court admits statement of alleged coup plotters as exhibits

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday commenced a trial-within-trial in the ongoing prosecution of six persons accused of plotting to overthrow the government of President Bola Tinubu.

The trial-within-trial is aimed at determining whether statements allegedly made by the defendants to military investigators were obtained voluntarily or under duress, coercion, torture or inducement as alleged by the defence.

At the commencement of proceedings, the trial judge, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik cautioned parties to restrict themselves strictly to issues relating to voluntariness of the statements and avoid delving into substantive matters already pending in the main trial.

The prosecution led by the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation DPPF, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, informed the court that it had three witnesses to testify during the trial-within-trial .

He subsequently called its first witness, an officer of the Nigerian Army Corps of Military Police, who is the 4th prosecution witness in the main trial.

Led in evidence, the witness told the court that the defendants were calm, unagitated and fully aware of their constitutional rights before making their statements.

He maintained that the investigation process complied with standard operating procedures and best investigative practices as stipulated by the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015.

The prosecution thereafter tendered the statements of the six defendants allegedly obtained by the Special Investigative Panel, SIP and the Military Police.

Statements relating to the 1st to 5th defendants were admitted as Exhibits series A to series E, while that of the 6th defendant was admitted as Exhibit F.

The prosecution also tendered a black external hard drive and a flash drive said to contain video recordings of the defendants’ extra-judicial statements alongside certificates of identification.

Defence lawyers raised no objections to their admissibility during the trial-within-trial and the court admitted the devices as Exhibits G, G1, H and H1.

While being led in evidence, the witness repeatedly insisted that no defendant was denied access to legal representation and that all suspects were informed of their rights, including the right to remain silent and the right to engage counsel of their choice.

Speaking specifically on the 1st defendant, a retired Army General, the witness described him as a highly respected senior military officer who remained calm throughout the interrogation process.

According to him, the defendant was placed in a properly ventilated room, cautioned about his rights and informed that any statement made could later be tendered in court as his own side of the story.

The witness further told the court that the video recordings showed no sign of coercion, intimidation or inducement and argued that the similarity between the oral and written statements reinforced the claim that they were voluntarily made.

On allegations that the written statements did not correspond exactly with the recorded video interviews, the witness explained that written accounts could not be word-for-word reproductions of oral interviews because “human beings are not computers.”

He also maintained that the military investigation team employed modern investigative techniques and had no reason to force suspects into making statements.

The witness gave similar testimony regarding the 2nd defendant, identified as Captain Erasmus, stating that the senior military officer voluntarily elected to reduce his oral statement into writing after speaking in the recorded interview.

He denied allegations that the defendant was coerced into pleading for clemency and insisted that all statements were made freely in the interest of justice.

Regarding the 3rd defendant, identified as Inspector of the Nigeria Police Force, the witness dismissed claims of torture and coercion, stating that the video recordings showed the defendant in a calm and relaxed posture throughout the interview process.

He also rejected suggestions that the defendant may have been restrained outside the camera frame, arguing that the duration and nature of the video showed no signs of tension or force.

On the 4th defendant, identified as Umoru Zekeri, the witness expressed surprise over allegations of involuntariness and maintained that the defendant freely narrated events and locations allegedly known only to him.

The witness also testified that the 5th defendant, identified as Bukar Kashim Goni, willingly gave his account after being informed of his rights and choosing to tell his own side of the story.

Concerning the 6th defendant, the witness explained that an interpreter was provided after the defendant indicated he could neither speak nor write English fluently. He said the suspect’s statements were translated between Hausa and English in line with fair hearing requirements before they were read back to him for confirmation.

During cross-examination by defence counsel, the witness admitted that he was not a member of the Special Investigative Panel but stated that he participated intermittently in the investigation process.

He also acknowledged that the video recordings shown in court related only to statements made before the Military Police and not those taken before the SIP.

Under questioning, the witness admitted that some video recordings and written statements were made on different dates but maintained that the sequence did not affect their voluntariness so long as they were freely made.

The witness further confirmed that none of the statements tendered before the court bore endorsements by legal practitioners and that no lawyers, civil society representatives or Justices of the Peace were present during the recordings.

However, he insisted that all defendants were informed of their rights to legal representation but did not request lawyers during the interrogation sessions.

He also admitted that some defendants were not shown physically writing their statements in the videos, explaining that oral accounts were later reduced into writing and endorsed by the suspects after being read back to them.

Counsel to several defendants confronted the witness with discrepancies relating to dates of recordings, the absence of lawyers during interrogations, lack of video footage showing actual writing of statements and the non-appearance of cautionary words in some exhibits.

The witness, however, maintained that the investigation process was transparent and conducted in line with military procedures and constitutional safeguards.

Ex-SDP chair arraigned over breach of trust

The Federal Capital Territory Chief Magistrate Court on Tuesday arraigned the former National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party, Shehu Gabam, over alleged misappropriation, breach of trust and forgery involving party funds.

Gabam was docked before Chief Magistrate Amauche Onyedium alongside the party’s former National Youth Leader, Chukwuma Uchechukwu, in suit No. DCC/10/2026.

The criminal complaint was instituted by the current SDP National Chairman, Sadiq Gombe, under relevant provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015.

At the hearing, Gabam pleaded not guilty to the allegations levelled against him before the court.

The court subsequently admitted the former SDP chairman to bail in the sum of N3m with two sureties who must possess landed property in Abuja.

Chief Magistrate Onyedium also ordered Gabam to deposit his international passport with the court registrar pending the determination of the case.

The matter was thereafter adjourned until May 25 for further hearing.

Speaking with journalists after the proceedings, Gombe described the court action as part of efforts to restore accountability and discipline within the opposition party, saying the leadership resorted to legal action after petitions submitted to relevant agencies allegedly yielded no response.

He said, “We are happy with the court decision as we have confidence in the ability of the judiciary to do justice to the millions of members of the SDP. This is not about us but the institution. The SDP is an institution governed by law through its constitution, the Electoral Act and the country’s constitution.

“What we are doing now is to cleanse the party and reset it. If we are present candidates who will be president, governors, senators, members of the House of Representatives, State Houses of Assembly, chairmen, and councillors, I think at the party level we are supposed to cleanse it to make it corruption-free.

“That is why we embarked on the cleansing procedure. In the process, an audit report was submitted to INEC, in which we disclosed that during the period under review, we met only N32m, of which N31m was squandered.”

The internal crisis within the SDP deepened in October 2025 after Gabam, Uchechukwu, and the party’s National Auditor, Clarkson Nnadi, were expelled over allegations of misconduct and financial impropriety.

Following the allegations, the party constituted an independent disciplinary committee to investigate the matter and submit recommendations to the leadership.

The SDP National Working Committee later adopted the committee’s white paper and formally announced the expulsion of Gabam and Uchechukwu over alleged gross misconduct and abuse of office.

The decision was subsequently endorsed by the party’s 36 state chairmen.

The current leadership of the party maintained that the court action was aimed at restoring transparency, accountability and discipline within the SDP.

The Nasarawa State Police Command said two suspected kidnappers linked to the abduction of students of the engineering faculty of the Nasarawa State University, Gudi campus, have been arrested. The suspects, identified as Abdullahi Yeyi Haro, alleged leader of the kidnapping syndicate, and Basiru Abdullahi, both males from Gudi.

In a statement signed by the command’s relations officer Rahman Nansel on Tuesday, he said they were apprehended after diligent investigation and sustained intelligence-coordinated tactical and strategic operations by the operatives aimed at dismantling the criminal network responsible for the abduction.

The command, however, confirms that the abducted students have been safely released and reunited with their families, as the victims are currently receiving medical attention and necessary support following their ordeal.

Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, presidential hopeful of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), says he will establish a terrorism court and reform intelligence coordination among security agencies if elected in 2027.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Hayatu-Deen said Nigeria’s security and economic crises are interconnected, noting that insecurity has worsened poverty, food inflation and unemployment across the country.

“When farmers cannot reach their fields, food prices rise. When traders cannot move goods, the cost of living rises. When young men cannot find work, criminal networks find recruits. Insecurity fuels poverty. Poverty fuels insecurity. To break the cycle, Nigeria must restore the authority of the state,” he said.

Hayatu-Deen said if elected president, he will start implementing his security plans on the first day in office, including designating violent groups as terrorist organisations.

“The Nigerian state must stop treating organised mass violence as ordinary crime,” he said.

The economist said he will prosecute every bandit, kidnapper, and collaborator under terrorism laws, with “accelerated procedures through designated terrorism courts”.

“Terrorism charges carry life imprisonment. The days of light sentences, quiet releases, and cases disappearing into endless judicial backlog are over,” Hayatu-Deen said.

The former managing director of the defunct FSB International Bank said he will dismantle the financial networks that keep terrorism alive by directing the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to identify, freeze, and seize the assets of financiers, ransom collectors, arms suppliers, and money launderers.

“A joint financial intelligence and telecom surveillance task force will track ransom flows, criminal communications, and interstate kidnapping networks using modern technology and real-time intelligence sharing. You cannot aim to kill the foot soldiers while leaving the treasury intact,” he said.

Hayatu-Deen said he will end “federal complicity in ransom payments and negotiated amnesties” and ensure that no federal funds go to proscribed groups.

“Where state governments seek federal security cooperation, that cooperation will be conditioned on compliance with this policy. The Federal Government will not legitimise criminal violence by rewarding it with public funds or political concessions,” he said.

The politician pledged to rebuild the multi-national joint task force (MNJTF), restore regional security cooperation and reform intelligence coordination across relevant agencies.

“Military, police, DSS, immigration, customs, and financial intelligence must stop operating in silos. Nigeria does not only need more force. Nigeria needs better intelligence, better shared, and faster acted upon,” he said.

Hayatu-Deen said he will strengthen policing capacity nationwide, equip them with modern technology and rapid-response systems, and ensure tighter coordination between federal and local security structures.

“The military cannot permanently police every community in Nigeria. That is not a sustainable security architecture, and we will end it,” the politician said.

The presidential aspirant promised to launch targeted economic recovery programmes in high-risk regions, with deliberate focus on young people vulnerable to recruitment by criminal and extremist networks.

“Enforcement alone will not hold. Lasting security requires both the rod and the opportunity. These are not long-term aspirations or second-term promises. They are immediate actions,” he said.

Fire destroys shops, goods at Kwara market

No fewer than 24 shops were destroyed in a devastating fire outbreak that swept through parts of the popular Mandate Ultra-Modern Market in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, in the early hours of Tuesday.

According to a statement issued by the spokesperson for the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, firefighters received a distress call at about 4:44 a.m. and immediately mobilised to the scene to contain the inferno.

Hassan said, “The magnitude of destruction was largely intensified due to the late call made to the Fire Service, as the fire had already spread significantly before firefighters arrived at the scene.”

He, however, noted that firefighters prevented the incident from escalating further across the market complex.

“Nevertheless, the gallant firefighters of the Kwara State Fire Service displayed exceptional courage and professionalism in combating the inferno and successfully averted further destruction across the market,” the spokesperson added.

According to him, preliminary findings revealed that the outbreak was triggered by a power surge.

“The fire reportedly started in a shop where phone accessories were sold alongside a phone charging business, before spreading to nearby shops used for storing foodstuffs and other commodities,” Hassan explained.

Some traders and market stakeholders praised the firefighters for their prompt intervention, saying their efforts saved a large portion of the market from destruction.

The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Alabi Muhammed, personally visited the scene to sympathise with the affected traders.

During the visit, he met with leaders of the market associations and assured them of the agency’s continued support.

The new digital regime, expected to take effect from July 2, 2026, is aimed at eliminating the long delays and bureaucratic bottlenecks that have for years frustrated aviation professionals seeking licences, renewals and certifications from the regulatory authority.

Speaking on Tuesday at the unveiling of the Modern Personnel Licensing and Certification, NCAA Digital Transformation Initiative PEL/MED Stakeholder Engagement held at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, the Director-General of Civil Aviation, Capt. Chris Najomo said the era of waiting endlessly for aviation licences would soon become history.

Najomo described the initiative as a major milestone in the authority’s ongoing reform programme, stressing that Nigeria’s aviation sector could no longer afford to rely on outdated systems in a rapidly evolving global industry.

The NCAA boss said, “Personnel licensing in America is key to airline operators. It is very important. This is what pertains everywhere in America and other advanced aviation systems.

“I am sure airline operators are asking, ‘When are we going to start? When are we going to stop waiting one week, two weeks, sometimes one month for licences to come out?’ But I tell you, it is going to be over soon. There will be no more waiting.”

The Najomo explained that the digital transformation initiative would provide transparent online application processes for the issuance, renewal and conversion of licences, while applicants would also be able to track the status of their applications in real time.

According to him, the platform would also introduce biometric-backed credentials and QR-code-based licence verification in line with international best practices, thereby strengthening security, transparency and data integrity within the industry.

Najomo noted that the aviation sector globally had moved beyond fragmented databases, semi-automated systems and paper-driven workflows, insisting that modern regulatory oversight now depends heavily on technology and real-time verification systems.

“The deployment of this digital licensing and medical certification platform represents the first phase of the NCAA’s wider digital transformation programme,” he stated.

He disclosed that subsequent phases of the programme would cover Air Operator Certificate, processing, Approved Training Organisations, Approved Maintenance Organisations, aerodrome certifications, air navigation service providers, ground handling organisations and dangerous goods approvals.

The DGCA also revealed that the authority had already made progress in reducing delays associated with the issuance of Air Operator Certificates for airlines.

He said, “Before now, obtaining an AOC could take between one and two years. We reduced that timeline to between six and eight months, and with this digital platform, we are looking at reducing it further to about 90 days.

Najomo further explained that the platform would extend to technical certification processes, including aircraft registration, airworthiness certification, aircraft maintenance programme approvals, export and import certification of airworthiness, supplemental type certificates and monitoring of airworthiness directives.

In his welcome address, the Director of Airworthiness Standards, Engr. Godwin Balang said the implementation of the MPLC project would finally bring an end to the era of paper-based aviation certification processes in Nigeria.

Balang stressed that effective aviation oversight could no longer be managed manually, especially in an industry driven by speed, accuracy, compliance and safety.

Balang said, “What we are going to find with my team is not something you can use paper files to do. You need systems. That is why we are gathered here today.

“The Director-General has picked this project, and within two years, he has moved it from where he met it to where it is today. What you are seeing on the screen is the landing page of the software we are talking about.”

According to him, the MPLC system has several integrated components, including a central module, personnel licensing module, technical records module and organisational approvals module designed to streamline regulatory oversight across multiple sectors of the industry.

He further disclosed that the NCAA had engaged international technical partners and experts to understudy global best practices in aviation digitalisation as part of efforts to ensure a seamless implementation of the project.

He added that a team from the authority recently travelled to South America for a five-day technical engagement focused on the deployment and operationalisation of the MPLC project.

UK Prime Minister defiant despite growing calls to quit

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer told his top team Tuesday that he was getting on with governing the country, defying mounting calls from ministers and MPs to step down.

The Labour premier dared any leadership hopefuls to challenge him, but his position looked precarious after two junior ministers resigned from his government, which could trigger a domino effect.

“The Labour Party has a process for challenging a leader and that has not been triggered,” Starmer told ministers during crunch talks over his future, as no one person has stepped forward to challenge him yet.

“The country expects us to get on with governing. That is what I am doing and what we must do as a cabinet,” he added, on what has become the most crucial day yet of his almost two-year-old premiership.

– ‘Do the right thing’ –

At least 80 of Labour’s 403 members of parliament have now called for Starmer to quit immediately, or to set out a timetable for his resignation.

Starmer’s vow on Monday to fight on and prove his doubters wrong did little to calm the clamour for his removal.

Miatta Fahnbulleh on Tuesday became the first junior minister to do resign, calling on Starmer “to do the right thing for the country and the party and set a timetable for an orderly transition”.

Jess Phillips then quit as safeguarding minister, telling Starmer in a letter that she was not seeing the change “I, and the country expect”.

Interior minister Shabana Mahmood, late Monday, became the most senior government figure to advise Starmer to consider his position, UK media reported.

Newspapers reported that other senior ministers, including deputy prime minister David Lammy and Yvette Cooper, had spoken to Starmer about his position.

– Growing pressure –

Pressure on Starmer has been soaring since Labour suffered disastrous local election results last week, losing hundreds of councillors to the hard-right Reform UK party and left-wing populist Greens.

Labour also lost its century-old dominance in Wales and were hammered by the Scottish National Party in the devolved parliament in Edinburgh.

The results added to a miserable few months for Starmer who has been engulfed in scandal over his decision to appoint — and then sack — Peter Mandelson as ambassador to Washington.

Mandelson was a former friend of US sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, and Starmer earlier this year fended off calls to quit over his decision to appoint him.

Starmer has also failed to spur promised economic growth to help British citizens suffering with the cost of living.

On Monday, Starmer pledged that Labour would be “better” and bolder to assuage disgruntled voters impatient for change.

But dozens of Labour MPS later urged him to step down, including four government aides who resigned their positions.

– ‘Steadfast’ –

Several cabinet ministers backed Starmer after the meeting, including Defence Secretary John Healey who warned that “more instability is not in Britain’s interest”.

Technology Secretary Liz Kendall said he had her “full support” while Business and Trade Secretary Peter Kyle said Starmer was “showing really steadfast leadership”.

Housing minister Steve Reed also noted that a leadership challenge had not been triggered, “so we all intend to get on with our jobs”.

Under party rules, any challenger would need the support of 81 Labour MPs — 20 percent of the party in parliament — to trigger a leadership contest.

Starmer has vowed to contest any challenge.

A contest would likely spark damaging infighting, with MPs from the left and right of the party battling to position their preferred candidate or shore up Starmer.

– Who could succeed? –

It has long been rumoured that Health Secretary Wes Streeting and former deputy prime minister Angela Rayner could try to oust Starmer.

But neither is universally popular within Labour.

Another much-touted contender, Andy Burnham, the mayor of Greater Manchester, is unable to stand as he does not have a seat in parliament.

Some of his supporters want Starmer to set a date for his departure that allows their man time to become an MP first.

‘At least 72 killed’ as military bombs Zamfara market

No fewer than 72 people were reportedly killed after a military air strike hit Tumfa market in Zurmi LGA of Zamfara state on Sunday, according to AFP.

Citing a community leader, AFP reports that some of the victims’ bodies were “blown beyond recognition”.

“The actual death toll is hard to establish at the moment. Everybody, residents and bandits, goes to the market. People are at the mercy of the bandits. There is nothing they can do,” Garba Ibrahim Mashema told AFP.

A local source told the news wire service that the Tumfa market is controlled by bandits and that some of those killed were “young girls selling millet porridge and tofu in the market”.

Amnesty International said the death toll has risen to more than 100 people. It added that dozens of injured victims were receiving treatment following the air strike.

The organisation said one of the affected villages buried 80 people in one fell swoop.

“The authorities must investigate these deadly strikes, and put an end to reckless attacks on civilians,” Amnesty International said.

“In parts of the north facing conflicts, civilians have borne the brunt of suffering far too often. These horrific deaths must not be overlooked. The devastated survivors and their families deserve truth, justice and reparations.

“Military aircrafts bombed the weekly market, at a point it was full of people and without warning. The scene was chaotic.

“There were screams, blood, and bodies all over the ground. Those who survived with injuries were evacuated to general hospitals in Zurmi and Shinkafa, while those severely injured are receiving treatment at Yariman Bakura Specialists Hospital Gusau.”

AFP said the Zamfara missile launch occurred on the same day another Nigerian Air Force (NAF) operation targeting bandits in Niger state killed 13 civilians.

Michael Onoja, defence headquarters spokesperson, told AFP that reports of civilian casualties in Zamfara were “not true”.

The military also denied reports that innocent civilians were killed in the Niger state air strike, although it said the incident would be investigated.
