Thank you. The president's full speech when you continue...

Presidential Address On The Implementation Of The Deregulation Policy In The Downstream Sector Of The Petroleum Industry, Sunday, January 15, 2012

Dear Compatriots,

1. This is the second time in two weeks I will address you on the deregulation of the downstream petroleum sector. In the last seven days, the nation has witnessed a disruption of economic activities. Although, the economic imperatives for the policy have been well articulated by government, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) went ahead to declare a nationwide strike.

2. There was also near-breakdown of law and order in certain parts of the country as a result of the activities of some persons or groups of persons who took advantage of the situation to further their narrow interests by engaging in acts of intimidation, harassment and outright subversion of the Nigerian state. I express my sympathy to those who were adversely affected by the protests.
3. At the inception of the deregulation policy, Government had set up the Justice Alfa Belgore Committee to liaise with Labour and other stakeholders to address likely grey areas in the policy, but despite all our efforts, Labour refused the option of dialogue and also disobeyed a restraining order of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria.

4. However, following the intervention of the Leadership of the National Assembly, and other well-meaning Nigerians, Labour accepted to meet with government, but this yielded no tangible result.

5. It has become clear to government and all well-meaning Nigerians that other interests beyond the implementation of the deregulation policy have hijacked the protest. This has prevented an objective assessment and consideration of all the contending issues for which dialogue was initiated by government. These same interests seek to promote discord, anarchy, and insecurity to the detriment of public peace.

6. Government appreciates that the implementation of the deregulation policy would cause initial hardships and commends Nigerians who have put forth suggestions and credible alternatives in this regard. Government also salutes Nigerians who by and large, conducted themselves peacefully while expressing their grievances. Let me assure you that government will continue to respect the people's right to express themselves within the confines of the law and in accordance with the dictates of our democratic space.

7. Government will continue to pursue full deregulation of the downstream petroleum sector. However, given the hardships being suffered by Nigerians, and after due consideration and consultations with state governors and the leadership of the National Assembly, government has approved the reduction of the pump price of petrol to N97 per litre. The Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) has been directed to ensure compliance with this new pump price.

8. Government is working hard to reduce recurrent expenditure in line with current realities and to cut down on the cost of governance. In the meantime, government has commenced the implementation of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment projects: including the Federal Government- assisted mass transit programme which is already in place, and job creation for the youth.

9. Furthermore, the legal and regulatory regime for the petroleum industry will be reviewed to address accountability issues and current lapses in the Industry. In this regard, the Petroleum Industry Bill will be given accelerated attention. The report of the forensic audit carried out on the NNPC is being studied with a view to implementing the recommendations and sanctioning proven acts of corruption in the industry.

10. Let me assure Nigerians that this administration is irrevocably committed to tackling corruption in the petroleum industry as well as other sectors of the economy. Consequently, all those found to have contributed one way or the other to the economic adversity of the country will be dealt with in accordance with the law.

11. My dear compatriots, I urge you to show understanding for the imperatives of the adjustment in the pump price of petrol and give government your full support to ensure its successful implementation. I further appeal to Nigerians to go back to work and go about their normal duties as government has made adequate arrangements for the protection of life and property throughout the federation.

12. Government will not condone brazen acts of criminality and subversion. As President, I have sworn to uphold the unity, peace and order of the Nigerian State and by the grace of God, I intend to fully and effectively discharge that responsibility. Let me add that we are desirous of further engagements with Labour. I urge our Labour leaders to call off their strike, and go back to work.

13. Nigeria belongs to all of us and we must collectively safeguard its unity.

14. Thank you. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
GOODLUCK EBELE JONATHAN, GCFR
President,
Federal Republic of Nigeria

Truckload Of Weapons Heading For Nigeria Seized In Ghana

National President, NAAPE, Mr. Isaac Balami; and Acting General Secretary, NUATE, Mr. Abdul-Kareem Motajo.

The domestic wing of the MMA was empty and deserted with only a handful of aviation security men seen manning some strategic places.

Policemen had a difficult time preventing protesters from carrying out their mission.

Apart from Arik, which carried out its early morning flight, no other airline ventured to do any flight.

Some international passengers, who arrived aboard early morning flights from London and other foreign destinations, were stranded at the airport.

They could not get connecting flights out of Lagos to other cities within the country.

Also, some government officials and journalists, who arrived from the African National Congress convention in South Africa, were stranded at the Presidential lounge of the MMIA.

At about 4pm, they were, however, airlifted by a Gulf Stream Presidential aircraft with registration number 5N-GS.

Banks, filling stations shut down operations till after Strike

activities in most parts of the country were paralysed on Monday as majority of banks and filling stations did not open for business following the general strike called by organised labour in protest against the removal of subsidy on petrol.

Although, some banks and filling stations opened for business in some parts of the country, activities were largely limited as most of them closed their doors to customers.

Bank branches visited by our correspondents in Lagos and Abuja included those of United Bank for Africa Plc, Unity Bank Plc, Zenith Bank Plc, First Bank of Nigeria Plc, First City Monument Bank Plc and Oceanic Bank International Plc.

Others are Intercontinental Bank Plc, Keystone Bank Limited, Skye Bank Plc, Fidelity Bank Plc, Aso Savings and Loans Plc and some microfinance banks.

Also visited were filling stations belonging to Oando, Capital Oil, Mobil, Total and Conoil.

In Lagos, all the banks and filling stations were under lock and key as the strike recorded total compliance, though some senior officials were seen at the various bank headquarters, especially those on Lagos Island.

Some of the officials told one of our correspondents that they were at work for strategic reasons.

Desperate bank customers resorted to making cash withdrawals from Automated Teller Machines.

However, at some ATM points, customers were stranded as the machines did not dispense cash, while the functioning ATMs recorded large influx of bank customers.

In Abuja, some of the banks, which dared to open, incurred the wrath of officials of the National Union of Banks, Insurance and other Financial Institution Employees, who had earlier endorsed the strike action.

The NUBUFIE team, led by a man simply identified as Comrade Aliyu of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, made sure that all the banks complied with the strike directive.

For instance, the enforcement team stormed the Abuja Regional Office of Fidelity Bank Plc at about 12pm to picket it because banking operations were ongoing.

The team had demanded total compliance with the strike action by asking all the bank workers to either close and go home or join the protest.

Labour officials, who were prevented from gaining access into the premises of the bank, were, however, pacified by an unidentified senior official of the bank.

Moments later, some of the bank workers were seen driving out of the premises.

The same scenario played out at Aso Savings and Loans Plc.

However, the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation shunned the strike action as they carried on with their normal operations.

A top official of the apex bank, who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, said that it would not be in the best interest of the country for the apex bank to shut down its operations as a result of the
<img width='1' height='1' They carried placards with inscriptions such as ‘We don’t want Badluck,’ ‘This is not the Nigeria of our dream,’ ‘Jonathan, you have failed the people’ etc.

There were, however, disagreements between the protesters and the police at Mokola and the state secretariat. Some of the protesters vandalised the state Secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ibadan.

At Amuloko area and Akanran, Ona Ara Local Government Council of the state, vehicular movement was prevented by angry residents who made bonfire as early as 7am. Major markets were closed down, while some youths were seen playing football on the streets.

In Ogbomoso, the situation was similar as bonfire was made on major roads. At the popular Takie Square, people gathered to sing anti Federal Government songs.

At Mapo Hall, Ibadan, some union leaders addressed the protesters on the need to press on with the struggle until their demand was met.

A former Chairman of the University of Ibadan chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Dr. Ademola Aremu, recalled that between 1999 and 2007, former President Olusegun Obasanjo increased the pump price of fuel five times.

He said, “They told us that they would use the money to improve on infrastructure but we don’t trust them anymore. They should shut illegal refineries and hire the boys engaging in illegal refining to work on the refineries. Jonathan, David Mark and the governors have failed us. It is either they reverse the price of petrol, resign or reverse the so-called subsidy.”

Chairman of Trade Union Congress in the state, Mr. Bayo Ajayi, said, “We have started the protest and there is no going back until the price is reversed. Nigerians will not give up the fight until the price is reversed.”

Chairman, Nigeria Medical Association, Prof. M. Obajinmi, said, “We contend with infrastructural deficit such as bad road network, poorly maintained hospitals, ill equipped schools and more. Everything is at the detriment of the Nigerian masses. Painfully, our legislature and the executive continue to milk the nation dry with high cost of governance.”

Former President, Nigeria Bar Association, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu, said, “We must call the bluff of this government. President Jonathan is not a man of integrity. We want the government to do our bidding not us doing their bidding.”

The Babaloja of Oyo State Mr. S. Three peaceful protesters at the Pen Cinema area of Agege, Lagos, allegedly by one CSP Segun Fabunmi and Victor Okafor, the DPO of Pen Cinema police station driving a vehicle with registration number RS 101 LA. The police shot and killed after brutally torturing him on the street.
Pictures of the brutality meted out on Ademola Aderinlo have been widely circulated, the other two protesters killed in Lagos were shot when the policemen tried to disperse protesters.

In Kano, the police also killed two other peaceful protesters today at the protest rallies there. Many injuries have also been reported.
Helicopters gunships were seen hovering over the Gani Fawehinmi Park, Ojota, where over 150,000 gathered at the venue of the Save Nigeria Rally. All the protest rallies organised by the NLC and TUC terminated at the Gani Fawehinmi Park.

Happy New Year 2012

If it seems like Blackbery smartphones are getting less life out of their batteries... you're absolutely right. Blackberry Smartphones can help you get a lot done while traveling, but if you're doing a lot on one in a day, you're apt to see your screen go dark long before the sun goes down.
Watching out for a few small things during your day, however, can help extend your Blackberry battery life on your Blackberry smartphone and make sure you've got enough battery power to make it all day and well into the night.

Blackberry Mixed signals
It takes extra battery power for your Blackberry smartphone to search for a data connection. If you're somewhere where you won't get a signal, like an airplane or subway, putting your Blackberrry smartphone in airplane mode or turning it off altogether will prevent it from draining your battery. Turning your Blackberry smartphone on does require a bit of extra power, so it's best to save shutting it off for times when you plan to leave it off for a while, rather than something like a 20-minute subway ride to work in the morning. Thinking of it as car mode or subway mode instead of airplane mode might just be the mental trick you need!
Likewise, turn off wifi when you don't need it. When it's active, your Blackberry smartphone scans for available wifi connections constantly, which kills battery life. If you're using the wifi in a coffee shop or bookstore, remember to disable that connection when you're done to avoid draining your Blackberry battery while you're on the road.

NOTE: Your Blackberry battery drains faster when you're inattentive

Focus on the task at hand
Sure, you can have your email open, search for directions to a local restaurant, watch a video on Your Blackberry smartphone, and play music at the same time — but chances are you're really only focused on one of those tasks. Everything you have open on your Blackberry smartphone is using some amount of battery power. Try to focus on doing just one thing at a time on your Blackberry smartphone, and close unnecessary applications to keep them from draining your battery.
Things like your GPS and the bluetooth connection you use to connect to your hands-free device in the car gobble up a ton of battery power and are of no use to you unless you're doing a few specific tasks.

Bright future
Bright screens look great but are a huge drain on your Blackberry smartphone's battery. To stretch your Blackberry smartphone's battery life, go into the controls or settings and dim the backlight or brightness of your screen. While the dimmest setting might be difficult to read (especially if you're somewhere brightly lit), something toward the middle will extend your Blackberry smartphone battery life without putting too much strain on your eyes. If your phone has an auto-brightness option, using that can be a one-step solution to balancing Blackberry smartphone battery life and ease of reading.
Along those same lines, try to avoid using animated backgrounds on your Blackberry smartphone. Remember, the less you ask of your Blackberry smartphone, the less it draws on your battery.

Bad vibrations
It takes more battery power for your Blackberry smartphone to vibrate than it does to ring. While you absolutely want to have your Blackberry smartphone on vibrate (or turned off) when you're at a movie or in a meeting, keeping your ringer on at other times can help extend battery life.

Mandatory nap time
Just as you would with a toddler, the easiest way to make sure your Blackberry smartphone's battery lasts all night is to give it a nap at some point during the day. If you're headed into a meeting for a few hours, turn off your phone and leave it in your desk. Likewise, if you're out to dinner with close friends or on a date, turn off your Blackberry smartphone and focus on your companions. Not only will you look like a better employee and friend for focusing on the people around you in real life, you'll also save that much more juice for later.

Still having trouble?
If you still find yourself running out of battery life before the end of the day, plug into a charging bag or use an external battery pack such as Blackberry smartphone solar power to strap on some extra power for the road.

JTF Kill 59 Boko Haram Sect Members In Yobe State
