没有Linux、没有Email、没有Game、没有Movie，很久都没有经历这种生活了。为了填补夜晚的空虚，开始学习日语。用的是英文教材，难度好像增加了不少！ :-)

今天把本本切换到 Windows 下用了一会儿，差点儿快疯了。

刚进入 Windows，一个程序都还没打开，只点了一点开始菜单，机器就僵住了，cpu 100%。过了大概三分钟才恢复。

然后发现，Windows 自动更新不工作了，长期停在 13% 左右的位置，cpu 又 100% 了，问题出在 svchost.exe 上。

执行 "net stop winmgmt" 关掉了 ICS，cpu 恢复正常。接下来，开 IE 进行手动更新，那个进度条刚跑了五六圈，再次僵死。杀掉那个 svchost.exe 进程，cpu 倒是降下来了，这会儿无论自动还是手动都不能更新。

机器很干净，没病毒，没木马。在网上搜了一堆解决办法，没一个管用的。

我火了，回 Linux！

Writely coming

刚刚从 Solidot 看到消息说 Writely 重新开放注册了，赶快登上去试了一下这个闻名已久的在线文档编辑器，第一印象相当好，使用感觉跟本地安装的 M$ Word 或 OpenOffice.org 非常类似。现在 Google 旗下已经有了邮件、日历、记事本、试算表、地图等应用，再加上这个文字处理器，一个在线 Office 环境就已经初具规模了。

Wirtely 可以直接在网上建立文档，也可以通过 Email 或上传方式接受本地现有的文档。它还可以将文档转成其它格式，其生成的 PDF 文件也能够正确的支持中文，可惜格式丑了一点。作为一个基于 Internet 的应用，当然也有一般本地字处理器所不具备的特色，比较文件发布、共享、共同编辑等。Writely 虽然是 Internet Application，但速度相当快，使用起来感觉比 gmail 要更流畅。

在 Writely 里写的文档还可以直接发布个人的 blog 上，支持各种主流的 blog 服务商，也能支持通用的 blog API。本来是想通过 Writely 往 livejournal 上发一篇试试，结果却出现了错误。上个月就有人在 Google Groups 里报告了同样的问题，但好像一直没有修复。

Debian 系统的国际化支持是越来越好了，今天 debian-devel 上又发布了新玩意--翻译 Debian 软件包的简介。这个好呀，对英文有困难的同志以后也能知道每个软件是干什么的了。

如何参与翻译呢？

打开您最熟悉的邮件客户端，Mutt、Evolution、Outlook 都行，连 gmail 之类的 web 界面也行；

给 pdesc@ddtp.debian.net 发一封信，标题是“GET 3 zh_CN.UTF-8”。意思是申请 3 个软件包的简体中文翻译，编码是 UTF-8，服务器就会在尚未翻译的列表中挑三个寄给你；

过一会儿，就会收到一封邮件，把里面带的附件保存下来；

用文本编辑器打开附件，就可以开始翻译了。未翻译的项目是这样：

把翻译好的文件保存下来，然后以附件的形式发回给 pdesc@ddtp.debian.net 就好了。过一会儿就能收到确认信，如果提交失败，信中会指出哪里出了错。如果您是直接回复前面收到的那封信，由于标题还是包含了“GET 3 zh_CN.UTF-8”的内容，您又会得到另外三个未翻译项。

Note:

一次不要申请太多的条目，有空闲时间翻个三五条就行；

简介内容都比较紧凑，翻译起来有一定难度。如果拿不定主意，发信到 debian-chinese-gb@lists.debian.org 问一下；

翻译好的成果可以在 http://ddtp.debian.net 上看到；

目前 sid 里的 apt 还看不到翻译好的内容，好像要 experimental 版的才行，过一段时间估计就会有了。如果您着急的话，也可以安装 experimental 中的 apt, python-apt, synaptic 试试；

如果是在 windows 下翻译，保存文件时请注意一下编码是 UTF-8，不要存成 bom 格式了(er. 如果您明白我在说什么的话...)；

最好不要修改除 <trans> 以外的内容，以免出现格式错误；

以“#”开头的行是注释，
以“Description: ”开始的行是原始信息，
以“Description-xx: ”开头的行需要翻译，
注意，多行介绍的翻译在行首要留一个英文空格，段落之间的“ .”要保留。
请多参考前面的例子。

多行简介的翻译中，包括开头的空格，每行文字不要超过80个字符宽（中文按照两个字符算）。，或者跟英文的内容对齐也行。

[旧闻] 奥克兰大停电

事情发生在周一上午，当时天气恶劣，强风时速高达 80-130km/h，市郊一处变电站发生电力供应故障导致奥克兰市中心及周边地区大范围停电 4 小时。极度依赖电力的都市完全瘫痪。

没有电脑和刷卡机，几乎所有的商店公司都关门歇业，手里有现金也用不出去。:-)

奥大正值期末考试期间，当天的考试也全部推迟到半个月以后(6月27日)。惨！看到电视里报道，有几位学生在闹市区架起炉子卖起了烤香肠，解决了很多人的午饭问题，我想他们当天一定赚了不少吧。

在所有路灯都停止工作，且无人指挥交通的情况下，居然没有出现混乱，市民们驾车时都表现出了良好的素质，礼让慢行。想想看，要是在国内会变成什么样吧。

Disappointed with Lenovo

Lenovo will not install or support the Linux operating system on any of its PCs, including ThinkPads and a series of new notebooks, the company said this week.

Yes, I knew that almost no major computer makers offer pre-installed Linux in their PC. But I also knew that none of them make such an exclusive announcement.

Lenovo, you maybe get some benefits form M$ by this kind of statement, but you lose my love.

Grand Challenge 2007

Maybe, many of you already heard about Grand Challenge in last few months. The Grand Challenge 2005 required the autonomous grand vehicle drive hundreds miles within 10 hours. The driving environment is pretty simple, in desert. In 2004, with the same rule, none of teams can finished the task. Even worse, all of them stopped within 10 miles, some of them even can't go out the park. But people are smart, one year later, 5 teams achieve the goal, the Stanford Racing Team finished in 6:53 and get the price.

How about the next challenge in 2007? Oh, the environment become critical, it's held in urban area with normal traffic. Vehicles need to not only understand traffic signals and lights, but also know how to avoid the coming vehicles and keep the safe distance. What we can do with it? Sonar and Radar aren't suitable in such a noisy environment, common GPS devices couldn't provide enough precision. Probably, the only solution is binocular computer vision system

Here are a list of problems that we can imaging with this technique:

Implement an algorithm of recognize signal in ground, such as central line. We need keep the car in the correct line.

Calculate the velocity of coming vehicle (up to 60km/h), and make a decision (stop or change direction) in half second.

Calibrate cameras on the fly, because the vibration of vehicles are huge.

Electrical system must be highly stabilized, just like Hi-Fi audio system

High performance of the stereo imaging system (in both algorithm and software) with enough precision.

and so on...

It would be wonderful, if I can join the GC NZ team, but that's probably impossible because of time issue. :-(

Sun Java in Debian make me very curious until I read this and this news. Apparently, Ubuntu is the wire-puller behind the curtain. I was also noticed the new DLJ license for Java by Rich Burridge's Blog.

Although I'm not a fan of Java or Sun, I do like this movement toward OpenSource. Go ahead!

Pain and secret of Cygwin

Strange enough, MinGW's gcc is OK on my Windows XP, but sh.exe always crash when I run "configure" script. Cygwin is dog slow with "configure", but gcc always report "can't allocate heap". I tried to use MinGW's compiler in Cygwin environment, but some program (such as, ar) couldn't recognize the unix-like path and caused some linking errors. So, I gave up with this method and search the solution of "heap error" for Cygwin.

Finally, I found the answer in here, a hidden registry entry called heap_chunk_in_mb. Cygwin User's Guide said that "By default no Cygwin program can allocate more than 384 MB of memory (program+data)". To avoid this limit, I should set heap_chunk_in_mb to a bigger value. Err... 1024MB isn't enough, I must use 2048MB to get things down. I'm totally lost... Anyway, my Cygwin is working now.
