January spruce

In these days I styled a smaller spruce. It's a yamadori spruce I collected last spring. Since it showd nice grovth I decided it is OK to already work on it.
For the beginning I had to remove all the dead an unwanted branches.

This is it for now.
Unfortunately some branches were too week to work on because they did not get enough sunlight due to the dead branches and therefore had to be removed. Plus some branches were too long, and the branches that were left on the tree had a lack of remification. Therefore a detailed styling could not be done. So I only wired the main branches and put them in place.
Bare in mind that the first branch will be bent more to the front in the future and will come more to the trunk.

Today we had really good weater, so I went outside, took a piece of wood, my makita and dremel and began to carve.

After about two hours it looked like this.

Then it was time for some paint.
This is how it looks right now with a bonsai on it. In spring I will have to paint it with varnish.

The road to Belgium

NTC juniper

Yesterday I took the time to take care of my juniper which I styled at Vienna for the EBA New talent contest in 2008. The juniper was in these few years a bit neglected and was in need of a second styling. The material itself doesn't promise much, so I decided to meke something special out of it and give it some interest.
The new shape of the crown isn't much different from the original one, but the whole design is quite different. If nothing else this tree has some emotional and memmorial value for me.

Today was time for some late-autumn work. My shohin yew was in need of some rewiring and styling. The first photo shows the yew as I got it in 2009.

Japanese day

Today Jože (Joseph), a good buddy of mine gave me an interesting invite. He decided to participate on a contest and so he created something out of sushi. I brought along some bonsai and together we created an interesting composition of Japanese culture.

After more then two weeks of fog we finally had a sunny day yesterday. So I used the oppurtunity to make a few good photos of my hornbeam.

Burrs - sightseeing

On Monday we were trevelling the UK a little. First stop was to David Barlow's garden. I think a lot of you know the tree on the photos below. It wan a prize at the last Ginkgo awards.

Next, Tony took us to a wanderfull place where he takes only special people he says.

On Friday, the minute I flew in, we took off to find some yamadori. We found some nice hawthorns.

I hope you didn't think I was just hanging around doing nothing those two days. On Saturday Tony brought be a pine of his. The tree became quite international. It was dug up in Czech by Pavel who gave it to Mirek who gave it to Tony. And then Toni gave it to me to work on. Anyhow... The pine turned out to be a challange. It had a bad base/nebari, inverse tapper and the best part of the trunk was dead already.
After a few moments of thinking what to do I decided to make a quick sketch of the future design and begun to work.

This is the finished tree. Not much far of the original design, huh?

The second day I worked on a yew, which I brought home in the end in my suitcase.

Burrs - workshop

The workshop was held on Saturday and Sunday in a comunity center of some sorts. Four artists were invited to give the participants help and guidence: Carlos van der Vaart, Will Baddley, Pavel Slovak and Terry Foster. There were a LOT of trees to work on and each and every one of them made a step foreward.

Burrs 2011

This past weekend I have visited the the past years very nutorious event Burrs where I had been invited by Tony Tickle. People from menny corners attended the event: Czech, Germany, The Netherlands, Slovenia and the most from Great Britain. Alltogether there was 30 people. The atmosphere was superb and I met a lot of new people, some of them I knew just from the internet before. And I hope to see them again soon.
Below are just a few photos for starters, but there will be more in the next days.

Hear we are again. Another year of the italian Progetto futuro with E. Savini is here. Today passed peacefully while everyone was working. The main topic of this session are pines. To be continoued tomorow.

Another weekend, another exhibition. This time in Manzano, Italy. This exhibition called autumn leaves represents somehow the end of the season. This year next to the exhibit' the 17th Italian instructor congress took place (IBS).

Over ten clubs from Italy, Austria and Slovenia participated at the event.

Some minor demos took place too.

At the end I got an award by the IBS for the best bonsai/most artistic display at the exhibition.

A succesfull weekend in Austria

We all had a very succesfull weekend in lower Austria at the 8th exhibition of the local bonsai club. The atmosphere was just great. And the Slovenian trees got most of the prizes: Roland Petek recived a prize for the most interessting tree of the exhibition, Tomaž Kovšca got first prize in the category of the big bonsai and I got the first prize in the category of the mittle-sized bonsai and the award for the best tree declered by the public/visitors.

Hans van Meer Demo

At the workshop with Hans we saw a new approach to bonsai. Hans was thrilled abouth the quality of the trees and the knawlage we posess.
I worked on my half-cascading larix.

It just needs some final touches now.
