Europe Adventures: Part 1

I promised you I would share picture of my trip to Europe, so here is the first batch. Most of these are from our first destination, the beautiful, but tiny, country of Slovenia. We have a friend who lives there as a missionary, and we got to stay with her for 2 nights. I have been to Slovenia before, so it was exciting to reconnect with a few friends and experience some of the same places again with my mom.

Please Pass the Mustard!

Not my best selfies in today's post, but I wanted to show you a skirt I recently acquired from the sale rack at Fred Meyer. It's a basic black skirt, with a pink waistband. Black skirts are always classic choices, and this one is really light weight and I think it will be great for traveling. It doesn't seem like it will wrinkle too bad. I'll get to test it really soon, because my mom and I have a wonderful opportunity to take a business/pleasure trip to Europe! Sooooooooo excited! I'll bring back many, many pictures, I promise!

Anyway, for this outfit I paired the skirt with a striped shirt, mustard scarf, tights, boots and my denim jacket. I made the scarf all by myself, but I think I need to get another skein of yarn and add a few more rows. Chunky scarves are always fun. And it's mustard yellow! Believe it or not, it's the only mustard color item in my wardrobe. :)

Green and Clean

Let's talk about hair care. More specifically, let's talk about shampoo or the lack thereof. I have a confession to make. I haven't used shampoo in a few weeks. And no, that's not why I was wearing a hat in my last outfit post. ;) My hair is just as clean as any normal person's and here's why. Baking soda and vinegar. That's right folks, just like that volcano you made in your first science class. Except without the exploding fizz.

I first heard about this from the same place I come across most great ideas: Pinterest. A link took me to a very interesting article about "No-Pooing" which just means washing your hair without shampoo. I was intrigued. More research lead me to the conclusion that it couldn't hurt to give it a try, especially since it boasted frizz-reducing qualities. I decided to take pictures of the before and after of my hair for "scientific documentation." Mostly because I thought you might be curious if this actually works.

I'm showing off my greasy hair for the world to see. This is what blogging does to you...

These are the before pictures. Not as bad as it looked in real life. This was the 3rd day after I had washed my hair with shampoo. I usually wash it every other day.

Now let's talk about how you actually clean your hair with volcano ingredients. The baking soda washes your hair. Mix 1 Tbsp with 1 cup of water and pour this over your head at the scalp. Scrub with your fingers. You won't get any lather, but it does feel kind of slippery. Don't scrub down the length of your hair, just at the scalp where it gets greasy. You can let it set for a minute, or rinse it out right away.

The vinegar acts as conditioner, smoothing the hair. Again, mix 1 Tbsp in a cup of water. Pour this over your hair from the base of your head down. Don't pour this part over your scalp, unless you have really dry hair. What I've been doing is dipping the tips of my hair in the vinegar solution for a little while, then letting that sit for a while. Then I dump the rest of the vinegar water over my head, because my hair needs the extra conditioning. I let it sit for a couple seconds, then rinse.

And yes, it does work.

Here's the after pictures.

All clean! Puffy, but clean. And surprisingly, your hair doesn't hold the vinegar smell. You may be able to detect it while it's wet, but once it's dry, the smell is gone.

So far, this process has worked just like regular shampoo and conditioner for me. No noticeable difference in frizz or grease level. I'm trying to go further in between washes and let my scalp get used to not having to produce as much oil. I think it's working. I'll keep you posted.

Are you intrigued by this method? I was! I couldn't believe I actually wanted to try it. It seems so crunchy and green. But hey, baking soda and vinegar are cheap, they don't contain artificial ingredients, and they work, so why not? Let me know if you decide to give it a try!

The Long and Short of It...

Recognize this maxi skirt? I've worn it for a few other outfit posts. But this time, I did something different. I made it shorter because I wanted to be able to wear my purple boots. How, you ask? I pulled it up under my arms as if I was going to wear it as a dress, and then wore a tighter-fitting tank top over the top of the whole thing. Ta-dah! A shorter skirt. I was proud of myself, and shocked that it didn't even look bunchy and bulgy. Of course, scarves cover a multitude of issues. :)

I'm a Softie for Softies!

Is there an age where you become to old to love plush toys? If there is, I haven't hit it yet. I still adore all things soft and huggable. Cute animals, sweet dolls...They just can be so darn cute! Especially the handmade ones. If it's handmade, that totally takes it to the next level of cool! Fortunately for softie lovers like me, plush toys can be very easy to make! Here's a few patterns and tutorials that I've been drooling over.

First up is this cute, and super simple bunny. Wouldn't this be perfect to stick in a kid's Easter basket? Find the pattern and instructions here.

For those of you wanting a more unique project, may I present Plattie the Platypus? Here's the pattern and tutorial.

How cute are these foxes and raccoons from Ruffles and Stuff? Her adorable pattern can be found here.

I'm slightly obsessed with Russian matryoshka dolls, so I cannot wait to make some of these babushka dolls. They look super easy, so I'll probably end up making a whole set in different sizes, nesting doll style. You can find the instructions here. (Note: there is a link to a paid pattern.)

Handmade softies make great gifts as they are very customizable, not to mention they can be a great way to use up fabric scraps! Make some up for your favorite young people, or just make some for you. You're never to old to enjoy a homemade softie. (In my opinion!)

The Cat Sweater, and Other Thrifted Things

I've been thrifting. Big surprise there, huh? You know it's bad when you visit the same thrift shop two days in a row because they had to close the first time before you were done looking around. I had no idea they were closing or I would have left sooner...or not grabbed so many things to try on...heh heh heh... I wanted to wear a disguise when I went back the next day. Fortunately, I don't think they recognized me as the crazy thrifting girl.

Anyway, here are a few of my finds from the last few weeks:

Awesome purple boots that were the tag color of the day at Goodwill. Score! I've worn them quite a bit already. I'm sure they'll surface in an outfit post soon.

You can never have too many pieces of classic literature on your shelves. I've already finished Lord of the Flies (it was weird...) and I'm working on Kidnapped. These were 99 cents each at Goodwill.

Fabric remnants for 50 cents each. I'm a fabric hoarder...

A big men's shirt, ready to be remade into something cute and girly.

A scarf. I probably have too many already, but I don't have a blue and yellow one!

This is a cat sweater. In all its jingle bell glory. Yes, it has a real jingle bell sewn to one of the cat's necks. It's a little noisy. This was a weird purchase, because I don't know if I'd ever wear it out of the house, but it's so funny! I took a picture of it on my first thrifting trip, showed it to my brother, and he said it was awesome and that I should have gotten it, so I did when I went back the next day. Thus is the saga of the cat sweater.

A Little Bit 90s

I knew I wanted to wear this skirt to church on Sunday, because it's been sitting in my closet for a while without being worn. It's a super fun reversible wrap skirt, but sometimes I can't figure out what to wear with it. I decided black was a safe choice for shirt color, but it still needed something. On a whim, I tried my denim vest over the top with a belt. The result was a little unusual, but I liked it! The oversized denim seems a little 90s, but hey, I am a 90's kid after all! ;)

The Swing of Things

So...maybe the whole blogging break thing wasn't the best thing for my posting habits. I've been having a hard time posting consistently, mainly because I have a hard time thinking of things to post about. Fortunately, I went thrifting yesterday, and got a couple things that will surface as a post soon. I think perhaps I need to take a look at my "projects to be done" box and remind myself what is inside. I need a creative project to get me going. And to share with my loyal followers. For now, this outfit will have to do. Sorry I look really tired (or something) in these pictures. It was the end of the day.

This outfit was pretty basic, but I liked the colors and felt cute and comfortable for work. Yes, cute and comfortable can go together! :)

Who's Who: Key Edition

A few weeks after I got my job, I was handed a set of keys. These keys looked exactly the same, but they went to different doors. For the first day or so, I had to look at the little tiny words stamped on the keys to be able to tell them apart. So I took them home and painted them different colors. It worked great, but the paint (or nail polish, rather) has chipped so I had to repaint them today. So, like any good blogger, I took pictures of the process to show the world and help out any who may be having the "Help, my keys are identical twins!" problem. :)

Step 1: Gather supplies. You'll need your keys, nail polish (a different color for each key, obviously), topcoat and something to protect your work surface from clumsiness. Oh, you'll also want a movie to watch, book to read, or some other project to work on while things are drying.

(See? I told you they were hard to tell apart.)

Step 2: Paint the keys like you would paint your nails! Let one side dry, then flip it over and do the other side. You may want to do multiple coats, it's up to you. Personally, I added a layer of glitter nail polish to one of mine for some extra bling. This step is when you'll need another source of entertainment, because waiting for all those coats to dry gets boring.

Step 3 is optional. I just added a topcoat to my keys to hopefully extend the life of the nail polish. This project is really just like doing your nails.

This is a super basic project, and I'm sure y'all are smart enough to think of it, and figure out how to do it without my help, but I thought I'd post anyway. Because I'm a blogger, and it's what we do. ;)

I have returned!

Hello friends! December is over and life can resume again. Yikes. It was a crazy month, and I feel like it's finally my Christmas break, even though Christmas is over. My work schedule is much less busy and I should be able to get back into sewing, crafting, blogging and thinking up cute outfits. Yay!

So, you've all probably seen posts where someone takes an outfit they've found on Pinterest or somewhere else, and tries to recreate it with their own clothes. It's such fun! And that's what I did when I came up with this outfit a couple weeks ago. I saw this picture on Pinterest, (original source) and liked the idea of the denim vest over the comfy cozy sweater. I didn't immediately recreate the look, but I remembered it, and tried it out a couple days later. I think my version turned out pretty cute! That's always a good feeling.

If you were looking closely, you might have noticed the little camera shutter trigger in my hand. I finally got one, and I must say, it makes self portraits/outfit photos so much easier! I don't have to keep running back and forth to the camera! I haven't gotten the knack of hiding it in my hand yet, but that'll come. ;)

Dear lovely friends and followers,

I regret to inform you that this blog will most likely not be updated until after Christmas. I hate to have to abandon blogging for that long, but I'm just too busy this month to come up with any decent posts. Christmas is rushing towards us faster and faster, and I had this idea that I would make all of my Christmas gifts. Maybe that wasn't a good idea, because I have quite a large immediate family. I'm also working around 40 hours a week for the first time in my life, and adjusting to that is hard. I come home tired, and then have to remind myself to work on all those Christmas presents. Needless to say, I'm starting to feel a little stressed out, which is horrible, because normally Christmas is my favorite time of year. And unfortunately, I just don't have any spare time for blogging these days. I really, really wish I did, because I have all these projects I want to make and share with you, but I don't even have time for making things except Christmas presents, and then I don't have time to post them. My creativity is feeling a little stifled. Not good when you're a person who really, really needs to do creative things frequently. So anyway, sorry for the rant, and sorry that I will be absent for a while. I will return as soon as possible.

Lazy Days

Hey y'all! I hope you all had a marvelous Thanksgiving. Mine was nice. My grandparents are up here from California, so we've had both sets of grandparents to celebrate with. I've had more time off this week, so I've been really lazy, just hanging out with my family. I'm in holiday mode I guess. Hence the lack of blog posts. Heh heh heh. But I went to Fabric Depot today and got some cute stuff, so that may inspire some creativity for posts. I'm planning on DIYing some Christmas décor for my room, so that may show up soon as well. I'll have to do something creative soon or I'll go crazy. ;)

Pattern Mixing like a Boss

This is what I wore to church and work today. It was a fun new way to wear my plaid shirt. I think the pattern mixing works because the dress is a neutral color that goes well with the plaid. One of the girls at work told me that she really liked this outfit and that she didn't think many people could pull it off, but that I did. That was nice to hear. I was hoping the combo was a good kind of different. :)

I think I'm getting better at this whole "pattern mixing" thing. How about you? Have you ever tried getting a little crazy with different patterns?

I have a quick outfit post for you today. I bought this dress at Old Navy yesterday (in the clearance section!) and wanted to wear it right away. It's super comfy, and it's striped, and you know I love stripes! I love gray too. Sometimes it's just fun to get something new. It helps get you interested in your closet again. I'm already thinking of ways to remix this dress into other outfits.

The Earth is a Sphere, and I Haven't Fallen Off...

I've had a lot of hours at work, and then when I get home, I just want to sit down and read a book or something. So nothing's really been getting done...But I shall try to post something of substance soon! In order for that to happen, I first need to get off the computer and actually do something worth posting. DIY Smashbook Tutorial

Have you heard of "smashbooking"? The idea is you just "smash" whatever you like into a "Smashbook", which you can buy at a craft store/online, ect. The official product/brand name is actually "Smashbook" but it's sort of turned into an adjective. "Smashbooking" is like scrapbooking, without all the fancy shmancy stuff. It's an art journal/scrapbook/diary/ect. I stumbled across the idea a few days ago (ok, it was yesterday) and it looked fun. I wanted to start my own book, but being the ~~cheap~~ crafty person I am, I decided to make my own.

Here's what you'll need to follow my method:

A spiral bound notebook
Paper (more on that later)
Scissors
A single hole punch
Your creativity

Remove the metal binding piece from the notebook.

Use one of the notebook's original pages as a template to cut out a bunch of fun pages in the right size. I used old sheet music, scrapbook paper, coloring sheets and some envelopes. I just remembered that I was going to use old book pages too. Use whatever you want to make your smashbook unique and fun for you! Have fun with it! That's the whole point. For reals. Just have fun.

By the way, his project is a great way to use up some of that pretty paper you've been ~~hoarding~~ saving. I had a bunch of paper left in the notebook, so I only cut out paper for accent type pages. If your notebook was all used up, you could replace all the pages with "pretty" ones. :)

Now it's time to get out the hole puncher. Put one of the original notebook pages on top of the pages you want to punch and use the holes as a guide. This way your pages will line up right. Keep in mind, if you have two pages you want to face each other, punch them accordingly. It's kind of like sewing. Put the right sides together and then punch them at the same time. The holes will end up on opposite sides. I don't know if that makes sense, but you're smart. You'll figure it out. ;)

Reassemble your notebook! I spaced my "pretty" pages with the plain ones that came in the notebook, but I tried to keep it as random and unplanned as possible. One of my quirks is that I have a hard time doing anything randomly, like laying out a quilt or a scrapbook page. It may look random when it's done, but you can bet I made sure that two of the same colors weren't together, ect. I almost use a formula when doing something "randomly." Ha!

After I put everything back together, I went through and added a few little embellishments to some of the pages to act as journal prompts, ect. Again, I tried to not think about where I was putting things too much.

Here's a shot of the finished notebook. It's ready to be "smashed!" I'm looking forward to filling it with all the little things that I have a hard time throwing away. Tickets, cards, pretty magazine clippings, ect. Hopefully it'll be a good way to get back into journaling as well.

And can I just say, I love making things? It was so therapeutic to cut and glue and make hole punch confetti this afternoon/evening. I needed to do something like that after being crazy busy this weekend. I think "smashbooking" will be a great way to unwind after work.

Operation Christmas Child

Are you familiar with Operation Christmas Child? If not, let me tell you about it. It's a wonderful organization that works to send shoeboxes full of Christmas gifts to impoverished children around the world. These boxes are typically filled with things like toothbrushes, socks, candy, small toys, soap, pencils, ect. While it may not seem like much to us, it means the world to the kids who recieve them. I've read stories of how the specific needs or wants of a specific child have been met by one of these boxes. And not only to the kids recieve a box full of much-needed items, but they also recieve the Gospel message, the greatest gift of all.

Personally, I've packed a few of these gift boxes in my life, working with my youth group to send out a bunch of shoe boxes. (One of the girls wrote a letter to put in her box, and recieved a reply back from the child who recieved it!) It was a lot of fun working together to bless children with Christmas gifts. Well, I can't go to my high school youth group anymore, but I still want to participate this year. So I'll be going out and buying gifts to fill a box or two this next week. And I had an idea! I decided that I am going to handmake some of the things that I will fill my box with. It's always special to recieve something that's been made just for you, so I want to do that for the child who will get my shoebox.

Warm hats (crochet pattern here) are pretty much always a good gift. They're easy to crochet (or knit, if you knit) and can be customized for a girl or a boy of any age.

These fabric hair bows are adorable for little girls. And big girls too! They're super fast and easy. I actually made a few of these this afternoon, but my method was a tiny bit different. I may have a post for you about it sometime soon once I perfect my technique. :)

I may even whip up a quick skirt or two.

I hope I've inspired you to make a shoebox of your own. Even if you only fill it with store-bought items, some child somewhere will appreciate it more than you know. There are drop off locations all over the country that are open between the 12th and 19th of this month to collect the boxes. Please visit the Operation Christmas Child Website for more information about filling your boxes, drop off locations and more. Send Christmas to a child this year. You'll be glad you did. :)

The Modernizing Effect

Are you tired of seeing this denim jacket yet? I think it's been in almost all of my outfit pictures this fall. It's just so versatile! I feel like it modernizes outfits really well. For example, this outfit would have been really boring and mediocre on it's own. Just a t-shirt and knit skirt. It was a combo I only would have worn around the house. But once I added the denim jacket, flats and a cute hat, I actually really liked the way it looked! I wore this outfit all day on Monday, even to work. Moral of the story: if you don't own a denim jacket, think about getting one. At least, if your style is anything like mine.

Well, that's about it for this post. It's my day off, so I need to get off the computer and start working on some refashion projects that have been floating around in my head. If nothing fails too drastically, you can expect some new refashion posts fairly soon.

One Small Step

I just realized I look really tense in these pictures. Clenched fists and all. Hmm. That was unintentional. I think I was just too focused on telling my sister how to use my camera. :P

This is the outfit I wore to church today. The dress is from this refashion post and the tights are from my post my dyeing misadventures. I went outside my comfort zone with the pattern mixing today by wearing the floral patterned scarf with a floraly patterned dress. Part of me was saying "Don't do it!" but another part of me thought it looked fine, so I decided to just do it. It was a big step for me. Kidding. But it sorta was. ;)

October Verse a Day Challenge: Days 30 and 31

Wow! It's the end of October already! Wasn't it just October 1st? Well, here's the last 2 days of the October verse challenge.

Day 30 was "Clothes." I could think of lots of verses about clothes. Here's one.

This has been a really fun challenge for me, and I've enjoyed finding the verses each day. I'd love to do it again sometime. :)

October Verse a Day Challenge: Days 24, 25, 26, 27, 28 and 29.

Heh heh heh, let's not waste time on excuses. Day 24. "Weather." There's a lot of verse about weather in the Bible, but I can't find the exact one I was thinking of, since I don't know the reference. This one's close.

"He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. " - Matthew 5:45 (NIV)

Day 25 was "People."

"I will say to those called ‘Not my people,’ ‘You are my people’;
and they will say, ‘You are my God.’” - Hosea 2:23b (NIV)

Day 26's theme was "Listening to." I'm not sure if I actually ever settled on a verse for this one.

"Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me. " Revelation 3:20 (NIV)

The theme for day 27 was "Morning." I thought of this verse right away. It was very fitting, as it seems like a lot of people have been having bad stuff happening in their lives lately.

"For his anger lasts only a moment,

but his favor lasts a lifetime;

weeping may remain for a night,
but rejoicing comes in the morning. " - Psalm 30:5 (NIV)

Yesterday's theme was "Looking back." Well, I thought of the classic Bible story of Lot's wife.

"But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt. " - Genesis 19:26 (NIV)

And finally, today's theme. "Moon." And yes, I have used this verse before. It's a good verse!

"When I consider your heavens,

the work of your fingers,

the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him,
the son of man that you care for him? " - Psalm 8:3-4 (NIV)

Well, there you have it. 6 day's worth of verses. I have been finding the verses on their assigned days, I just haven't gotten around to posting them. :)
